The United Nations treaty bodies were established to monitor the implementation of human rights by states parties. Through ‘General Comments’ – legally non-binding clarifications of treaty obligations – they have also influenced the development of international human rights law – for example, on the right to life and climate impacts. We address this phenomenon by establishing a twofold argument. First, we argue that General Comments are used by the committees to informally shape international law. They deliberately act as human rights law-makers, knowing that international institutions, organizations and professionals in their network will subsequently refer to such instruments. Second, we argue that treaty bodies not only rely on their network once they have adopted their outcome, but the experts’ personal networks also shape the drafting process of General Comments. We develop and illustrate an analytical framework with two case studies of General Comments on the human right to water and the torture prohibition. The analysis demonstrates the need for external knowledge of both technical and legal aspects of the norms being interpreted. By addressing pressing human rights challenges, expert committees can shape the law in times of stagnation and resist contestation even from powerful states.

Lead isotope ratios have been determined in multiple feldspar grains from hand samples of impact melt rock at the Manicouagan and Sudbury impact structures in Canada. The results reveal an extreme range of isotope values. This indicates that melt sheets are not homogeneous with respect to Pb at the millimeter scale. Such heterogeneity is significantly larger than that seen in non-impact-generated igneous rocks. Individual Pb isotope ratios of feldspars from Martian shergottites show a large range in 206Pb/204Pb values within one sample, more similar to the terrestrial impact melt sheets than to nonimpact igneous rocks. We suggest crystallization from impact melt sheets rather than volcanic sources as a petrogenetic model for some of the Martian shergottites.

We sought to obtain detailed information on the procedures and appraisal of screening for and diagnosing diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN) in clinical practice.This cross-sectional survey included 574 physicians from 13 federal states across Germany who responded to a tripartite questionnaire.The vast majority of the respondents reported to screen for DSPN at least once a year (87 %), while 65 % reported to examine the feet of DSPN patients at least twice a year. However, only 28 % and 20 % of the respondents used questionnaires and scores to assess the severity of neuropathic symptoms and signs, respectively. The rates of participants reporting that they do not use a standardized testing procedure were 58 % for pressure sensation, 62 % for pain sensation, and 54 % for thermal sensation. The rates of respondents reporting that they do not deploy a standardized assessment were 41 % for vibration sensation, 73 % for pressure sensation, 77 % for pain sensation, and 66 % for thermal sensation. Half of the physicians oriented themselves towards clinical guidelines when diagnosing DSPN.Despite relatively high screening rates, the willingness to implement both standardized testing procedures and assessment and to follow guidelines is low among physicians when screening for and clinically diagnosing DSPN.

Deep incised glacial valleys surrounded by high peaks form the modern topography of the Southern Patagonian Andes. Two Miocene plutonic complexes in the Andean retroarc, the cores of the Fitz Roy (49°S) and Torres del Paine (51°S) massifs, were emplaced at 16.7±0.3 Ma and 12.5±0.1 Ma, respectively. Subduction of ocean ridge segments initiated at 54°S, generating northward opening of an asthenospheric window with associated mantle upwelling and orogenic shortening since 16 Ma. Subsequently, the onset of major glaciations at 7 Ma caused drastic changes in the regional topographic evolution. To constrain the respective contributions of tectonic convergence, mantle upwelling and fluvio-glacial erosion to rock exhumation, we present inverse thermal modeling of a new dataset of zircon and apatite (U-Th)/He from the two massifs, complemented by apatite 4He/3He data for Torres del Paine. Our results show rapid rock exhumation recorded in the Fitz Roy massif between 10.5 and 9 Ma, which we ascribe to mantle upwelling and/or crustal shortening due to ridge subduction at 49°S. Both massifs record a pulse of rock exhumation between 6.5 and 4.5 Ma, which we interpret as the result of the onset of Patagonian glaciations. After a period of erosional quiescence during the Miocene/Pliocene transition, increased rock exhumation since 3-2 Ma to present day is interpreted as the result of alpine glacial valley carving promoted by reinforced glacial-interglacial cycles. This study demonstrates that along-strike thermochronological studies provide us with the means to assess the spatio-temporal variations in tectonic, mantle, and surface processes forcing on rock exhumation.

The European Union is increasingly resorting to a decentralised enforcement strategy in which it relies less on the Commission-initiated infringement procedure, and more on domestic litigation by particularly NGOs. In order to better understand whether this is a suitable strategy to tackle the compliance deficit, we need more insight into NGOs as decentralised enforcers of EU law. What do NGOs do to stimulate domestic compliance, and is this a potentially effective alternative to the centralised enforcement strategies? Analysing the actions by the German NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe in relation to the Ambient Air Quality Directive, reveals high potential for the role to be played by NGOs. This exploratory case illustrates that particularly the strategy of flooding the country with a wave of legal proceedings was effective in increasing the salience of the topic, thereby indirectly releasing those capacities that the authorities had still lacked to comply.

A Incontinência Urinária (IU) é uma das síndromes geriátricas mais importantes, pois afeta significativamente a vida dos idosos, influenciando sua qualidade de vida. Realizado estudo descritivo com abordagem qualitativa com 41 idosos residentes na zona urbana. Objetivou analisar as interferências e repercussões da IU na vida dos idosos. Coleta dos dados através de entrevista, realizada entre março a maio de 2014. Análise dos dados por meio da Análise Temática de Conteúdo. IU ocasiona interferências nas atividades diárias, de trabalho, na vida sexual e social dos idosos. Além de gerar repercussões emocionais, relacionais e financeiras em suas vidas. Essas interferências e repercussões comprometem sua qualidade vida e de saúde, bem como a sua interação social. É necessário que os profissionais de saúde, se familiarizem sobre esses problemas vivenciados pelos idosos incontinentes por meio de um acompanhamento efetivo e junto a eles elabore estratégias para lidar com essa condição.

In recent years, operations research in agriculture has improved the harvested yield, reduced the cost and time required for field operations, and maintained economic and environmental sustainability. The heuristics method, named Evolutionary neighborhood discovery algorithm (ENDA), is applied to minimize the inter-field and intra-field distance of the routing planning of machines in multiple agricultural fields. The problem is an extended version of the Agricultural Routing Planning (ARP) that takes into consideration the different capacity of the machines and multiple agricultural fields. This research also describes the mathematical model to represent the proposed problem formulated as an integer program. The experimental results show that ENDA successfully solves ARP instances, giving the best results and the fastest running time compared to those obtained by Genetic Algorithms and Tabu Search. The results also show that ENDA can save an average of 11.72% of the distance traveled by the machines outside the working path (when making maneuvers, going to or from the entrances and going from and returning to the Depot).

The (U-Th)/He dating technique is an essential tool in Earth science research with diverse thermochronologic, geochronologic, and detrital applications. It is now used in a wide range of tectonic, structural, petrological, sedimentary, geomorphic, volcanological, and planetary studies. While in some circumstances the interpretation of (U-Th)/He data is relatively straightforward, in other cases it is less so. In some geologic contexts, individual analyses of the same mineral from a single sample are expected to yield dates that differ well beyond their analytical uncertainty owing to variable He diffusion kinetics. Although much potential exists to exploit this phenomenon to decipher more detailed thermal history information, distinguishing interpretable intra-sample data variation caused by kinetic differences between crystals from uninterpretable overdispersion caused by other factors can be challenging. Nor is it always simple to determine under what circumstances it is appropriate to integrate multiple individual analyses using a summary statistic such as a mean sample date or to decide on the best approach for incorporating data into the interpretive process of thermal history modeling. Here we offer some suggestions for evaluating data, attempt to summarize the current state of thinking on the statistical characterization of data sets, and describe the practical choices (e.g., model structure, path complexity, data input, weighting of different geologic and chronologic information) that must be made when setting up thermal history models. We emphasize that there are no hard and fast rules in any of these realms, which continue to be an important focus of improvement and community discussion, and no single interpretational and modeling philosophy should be forced on data sets. The guiding principle behind all suggestions made here is for transparency in reporting the steps and assumptions associated with evaluating, integrating, and interpreting data, which will promote the continued development of (U-Th)/He chronology.

BackgroundRegular consumption of the soluble dietary fiber β-glucan is associated with decreased total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and blood glucose. Barley and oat flakes as natural sources of β-glucan were roasted to improve sensory quality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether roasting of barley and oat flakes changes the physiological impact of the β-glucan-rich flakes on glucose and lipid metabolism.MethodA five-armed randomized crossover trial design was used. The intervention study was conducted from May 2018 to May 2019 and included 32 healthy subjects with moderately increased LDL cholesterol (≥2.5 mmol/L). During the 3-week intervention periods, 80 g of roasted or traditional barley or oat flakes, or four slices of white toast bread per day were consumed for breakfast. At the start and the end of each intervention, fasting and postprandial blood was taken. The intervention periods were separated by 3-week wash-out periods.ResultsDuring the interventions with the cereal flakes, TC and LDL cholesterol concentrations were significantly reduced compared to baseline values by mean differences of 0.27–0.33 mmol/L and 0.21–0.30 mmol/L, respectively (p < 0.05), while high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was only reduced after the intervention with barley flakes (p < 0.05). After the intervention period with toast, TC and HDL cholesterol increased (p < 0.05). The fasting levels of triglycerides, fasting blood glucose and insulin did not change in any group. The effects of traditional and roasted varieties on blood lipids did not differ between the groups.ConclusionThe regular consumption of traditional or roasted barley and oat flakes contributes to the management of cardiovascular diseases by improving TC and LDL cholesterol.Clinical trial registrationhttps://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03648112, identifier NCT03648112.

The CARMENES instrument was conceived to deliver high-accuracy radial velocity (RV) measurements with long-term stability to search for temperate rocky planets around a sample of nearby cool stars. The broad wavelength coverage was designed to provide a range of stellar activity indicators to assess the nature of potential RV signals and to provide valuable spectral information to help characterise the stellar targets. The CARMENES Data Release 1 (DR1) makes public all observations obtained during the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, which ran from 2016 to 2020 and collected 19,633 spectra for a sample of 362 targets. The CARMENES survey target selection was aimed at minimising biases, and about 70% of all known M dwarfs within 10 pc and accessible from Calar Alto were included. The data were pipeline-processed, and high-level data products, including 18,642 precise RVs for 345 targets, were derived. Time series data of spectroscopic activity indicators were also obtained. We discuss the characteristics of the CARMENES data, the statistical properties of the stellar sample, and the spectroscopic measurements. We show examples of the use of CARMENES data and provide a contextual view of the exoplanet population revealed by the survey, including 33 new planets, 17 re-analysed planets, and 26 confirmed planets from transiting candidate follow-up. A subsample of 238 targets was used to derive updated planet occurrence rates, yielding an overall average of 1.44+/-0.20 planets with 1 M_Earth < M sin i < 1000 M_Earth and 1 d < P_orb < 1000 d per star, and indicating that nearly every M dwarf hosts at least one planet. ZusammenfassungIn seinem jetzigen Zustand wird das deutsche Gesundheitssystem nicht in der Lage sein, eine ansteigende Zahl alter Menschen in der Bevölkerung mit einer verminderten Zahl qualifizierter Erwerbspersonen zu versorgen. Diese Problematik betrifft besonders die postakute Versorgung von Schwerkranken, wie in einem ersten von zwei Beitragsteilen unter Situationsbeschreibung dargelegt wurde. Hier diskutieren wir Perspektiven und Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Eine führende Schlussfolgerung ist, dass akut- und rehabilitativmedizinische Maßnahmen deutlich wirksamer als bisher auf einander abgestimmt werden könnten und sollten.

Detecting a planetary companion in a short-period orbit through radio emission from the interaction with its host star is a new prospect in exoplanet science. Recently, a tantalising signal was found close to the low-mass stellar system GJ 1151 using LOFAR observations. Aims. We studied spectroscopic time-series data of GJ 1151 in order to search for planetary companions, investigate possible signatures of stellar magnetic activity, and to find possible explanations for the radio signal. Methods. We used the combined radial velocities measured from spectra acquired with the CARMENES, HARPS-N, and HPF instruments, extracted activity indices from those spectra in order to mitigate the impact of stellar magnetic activity on the data, and performed a detailed analysis of Gaia astrometry and all available photometric time series coming from the MEarth and ASAS-SN surveys. Results. We found a M > 10.6 M⊕ companion to GJ 1151 in a 390d orbit at a separation of 0.57 au. Evidence for a second modulation is also present; this could be due to long-term magnetic variability or a second (substellar) companion. The star shows episodes of elevated magnetic activity, one of which could be linked to the observed LOFAR radio emission. We show that it is highly unlikely that the detected GJ 1151 c, or any additional outer companion is the source of the detected signal. We introduce ECCOplanets, an open-source Python code that simulates condensation in the protoplanetary disk. Our aim is to analyse how well a simplistic model can reproduce the main characteristics of rocky planet formation. For this purpose, we revisited condensation temperatures ($T_c$) as a means to study disk chemistry, and explored their sensitivity to variations in pressure (p) and elemental abundance pattern. We also examined the bulk compositions of rocky planets around chemically diverse stars. Our T-p-dependent chemical equilibrium model is based on a Gibbs free energy minimisation. We derived condensation temperatures for Solar System parameters with a simulation limited to the most common chemical species. We assessed their change ($\Delta T_c$) as a result of p-variation between $10^{-6}$ and 0.1 bar. To analyse the influence of the abundance pattern, key element ratios were varied, and the results were validated using solar neighbourhood stars. To derive the bulk compositions of planets, we explored three different planetary feeding-zone (FZ) models and compared their output to an external n-body simulation. Our model reproduces the external results well in all tests. For common planet-building elements, we derive a Tc that is within $\pm5$ K of literature values, taking a wider spectrum of components into account. The Tc is sensitive to variations in p and the abundance pattern. For most elements, it rises with p and metallicity. The tested pressure range ($10^{-6} - 0.1$ bar) corresponds to $\Delta T_c \approx +350$ K, and for -0.3 $\leq$ [M/H] $\leq$ 0.4 we find $\Delta T_c \approx +100$ K. An increase in C/O from 0.1 to 0.7 results in a decrease of $\Delta T_c \approx -100$ K. Other element ratios are less influential. Dynamic planetary accretion can be emulated well with any FZ model. Their width can be adapted to reproduce gradual changes in planetary composition.

The main scientific goal of TESS is to find planets smaller than Neptune around stars bright enough to allow further characterization studies. Given our current instrumentation and detection biases, M dwarfs are prime targets to search for small planets that are in (or nearby) the habitable zone of their host star. Here we use photometric observations and CARMENES radial velocity measurements to validate a pair of transiting planet candidates found by TESS. The data was fitted simultaneously using a Bayesian MCMC procedure taking into account the stellar variability present in the photometric and spectroscopic time series. We confirm the planetary origin of the two transiting candidates orbiting around TOI-2095 (TIC 235678745). The star is a nearby M dwarf ($d = 41.90 \pm 0.03$ pc, $T_{\rm eff} = 3759 \pm 87$ K, $V = 12.6$ mag) with a stellar mass and radius of $M_\star = 0.44 \pm 0.02 \; M_\odot$ and $R_\star = 0.44 \pm 0.02 \; R_\odot$, respectively. The planetary system is composed of two transiting planets: TOI-2095b with an orbital period of $P_b = 17.66484 \pm (7\times 10^{-5})$ days and TOI-2095c with $P_c = 28.17232 \pm (14\times 10^{-5})$ days. Both planets have similar sizes with $R_b = 1.25 \pm 0.07 \; R_\oplus$ and $R_c = 1.33 \pm 0.08 \; R_\oplus$ for planet b and c, respectively. We put upper limits on the masses of these objects with $M_b < 4.1 \; M_\oplus$ for the inner and $M_c < 7.4 \; M_\oplus$ for the outer planet (95\% confidence level). These two planets present equilibrium temperatures in the range of 300 - 350 K and are close to the inner edge of the habitable zone of their star., Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Context. Solar surface magneto-convection appears as granulation pattern that impacts spectral lines in terms of both shape and wavelength. Such induced effects also tend to vary over the observed solar disc because of the changing observation angle and, thus, the changing observation height as well. Centre-to-limb observations of the resolved Sun offer an insight into the variable spectral behaviour across different heliocentric observing positions, providing crucial information about limb darkening, convective velocities, and line profile variability relevant to radial velocity (RV) calculations. Thus, RV measurements and exoplanet transit spectroscopy depend on precise reference templates. Aims. We want to provide a spectroscopic centre-to-limb solar atlas at high spectral resolution and high-frequency accuracy. The atlas shall help improve the understanding of the solar atmosphere and convection processes. Methods. We performed high-resolution observations of the resolved quiet Sun with a Fourier transform spectrograph at the Institut für Astrophysik und Geophysik in Göttingen. Our dataset contains a wavelength range from 4200 Å to 8000 Å. We obtained 165 spectra in total, with a spectral resolution of Δν = 0.024 cm−1, corresponding to a resolving power R of 700 000 at ∼6000 Å. Results. We present a centre-to-limb solar atlas containing 14 heliocentric positions. To check for consistency, we investigated the Fe I 6175 Å absorption line and compared our line profiles with previous centre-to-limb observations and also with simulations. The line profile and also the bisector profiles are generally consistent with previous observations, but we have identified differences to model line profiles, especially close to the solar limb.

Radial velocities (RVs) measured from high-resolution stellar spectra are routinely used to detect and characterise orbiting exoplanet companions. The different lines present in stellar spectra are created by several species, which are non-uniformly affected by stellar variability features such as spots or faculae. Stellar variability distorts the shape of the spectral absorption lines from which precise RVs are measured, posing one of the main problems in the study of exoplanets. In this work we aim to study how the spectral lines present in M dwarfs are independently impacted by stellar activity. We used CARMENES optical spectra of six active early- and mid-type M dwarfs to compute line-by-line RVs and study their correlation with several well-studied proxies of stellar activity. We are able to classify spectral lines based on their sensitivity to activity in five M dwarfs displaying high levels of stellar activity. We further used this line classification to compute RVs with activity-sensitive lines and less sensitive lines, enhancing or mitigating stellar activity effects in the RV time series. For specific sets of the least activity-sensitive lines, the RV scatter decreases by ~ 2 to 5 times the initial one, depending on the star. Finally, we compare these lines in the different stars analysed, finding the sensitivity to activity to vary from star to star. Despite the high density of lines and blends present in M dwarf stellar spectra, we find that a line-by-line approach is able to deliver precise RVs. Line-by-line RVs are also sensitive to stellar activity effects, and they allow for an accurate selection of activity-insensitive lines to mitigate activity effects in RV. We present the discovery of an Earth-mass planet ($M_b\sin i = 1.26\pm0.21M_\oplus$) on a 15.6d orbit of a relatively nearby ($d\sim$9.6pc) and low-mass ($0.167\pm0.011 M_\odot$) M5.0V star, Wolf 1069. Sitting at a separation of $0.0672\pm0.0014$au away from the host star puts Wolf 1069b in the habitable zone (HZ), receiving an incident flux of $S=0.652\pm0.029S_\oplus$. The planetary signal was detected using telluric-corrected radial-velocity (RV) data from the CARMENES spectrograph, amounting to a total of 262 spectroscopic observations covering almost four years. There are additional long-period signals in the RVs, one of which we attribute to the stellar rotation period. This is possible thanks to our photometric analysis including new, well-sampled monitoring campaigns undergone with the OSN and TJO facilities that supplement archival photometry (i.e., from MEarth and SuperWASP), and this yielded an updated rotational period range of $P_{rot}=150-170$d, with a likely value at $169.3^{+3.7}_{-3.6}$d. The stellar activity indicators provided by the CARMENES spectra likewise demonstrate evidence for the slow rotation period, though not as accurately due to possible factors such as signal aliasing or spot evolution. Our detectability limits indicate that additional planets more massive than one Earth mass with orbital periods of less than 10 days can be ruled out, suggesting that perhaps Wolf 1069 b had a violent formation history. This planet is also the 6th closest Earth-mass planet situated in the conservative HZ, after Proxima Centauri b, GJ 1061d, Teegarden's Star c, and GJ 1002 b and c. Despite not transiting, Wolf 1069b is nonetheless a very promising target for future three-dimensional climate models to investigate various habitability cases as well as for sub-ms$^{-1}$ RV campaigns to search for potential inner sub-Earth-mass planets in order to test planet formation theories., 26 pages, 15 figures

The large amounts of astrophysical data being provided by existing and future instrumentation require efficient and fast analysis tools. Transfer learning is a new technique promising higher accuracy in the derived data products, with information from one domain being transferred to improve the accuracy of a neural network model in another domain. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of applying the deep transfer learning (DTL) approach to high-resolution spectra in the framework of photospheric stellar parameter determination. To this end, we used 14 stars of the CARMENES survey sample with interferometric angular diameters to calculate the effective temperature, as well as six M dwarfs that are common proper motion companions to FGK-type primaries with known metallicity. After training a deep learning (DL) neural network model on synthetic PHOENIX-ACES spectra, we used the internal feature representations together with those 14+6 stars with independent parameter measurements as a new input for the transfer process. We compare the derived stellar parameters of a small sample of M dwarfs kept out of the training phase with results from other methods in the literature. Assuming that temperatures from bolometric luminosities and interferometric radii and metallicities from FGK+M binaries are sufficiently accurate, DTL provides a higher accuracy than our previous state-of-the-art DL method (mean absolute differences improve by 20 K for temperature and 0.2 dex for metallicity from DL to DTL when compared with reference values from interferometry and FGK+M binaries). Furthermore, the machine learning (internal) precision of DTL also improves as uncertainties are five times smaller on average. These results indicate that DTL is a robust tool for obtaining M-dwarf stellar parameters comparable to those obtained from independent estimations for well-known stars.

The CRyogenic InfraRed Echelle Spectrograph (CRIRES) Upgrade project CRIRES$^{+}$ extended the capabilities of CRIRES. It transformed this VLT instrument into a cross-dispersed spectrograph to increase the wavelength range that is covered simultaneously by up to a factor of ten. In addition, a new detector focal plane array of three Hawaii 2RG detectors with a 5.3 $\mu$m cutoff wavelength replaced the existing detectors. Amongst many other improvements, a new spectropolarimetric unit was added and the calibration system has been enhanced. The instrument was installed at the VLT on Unit Telescope 3 at the beginning of 2020 and successfully commissioned and verified for science operations during 2021, partly remotely from Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The instrument was subsequently offered to the community from October 2021 onwards. We aim to characterise the small-scale magnetic fields for a sample of 16 Sun-like stars and investigate the capabilities of the newly upgraded near-infrared (NIR) instrument CRIRES$^+$ at the VLT in the context of small-scale magnetic field studies. Our targets also had their magnetic fields studied in the optical, which allows us to compare magnetic field properties at different spatial scales on the stellar surface and to contrast small-scale magnetic field measurements at different wavelengths. We analyse the Zeeman broadening signature for six magnetically sensitive and insensitive \ion{Fe}{I} lines in the H-band to measure small-scale magnetic fields on the stellar surface. We use polarised radiative transfer modelling and NLTE departure coefficients in combination with MCMC to determine magnetic field characteristics together with non-magnetic stellar parameters. We use two different approaches to describe small-scale magnetic fields. The first is a two-component model with a single magnetic region and a free magnetic field strength. The second model contains multiple magnetic components with fixed magnetic field strengths. We find average magnetic field strengths ranging from $\sim 0.4$ kG down to $, 28 pages, 23 figures, accepted by A&A

The Paradox Basin in the Colorado Plateau (USA) has some of the most iconic records of paleofluid flow, including sandstone bleaching and ore mineralization, and hydrocarbon, CO2, and He reservoirs, yet the sources of fluids responsible for these extensive fluid-rock reactions are highly debated. This study, for the first time, characterizes fluids within the basin to constrain the sources and emergent behavior of paleofluid flow resulting in the iconic rock records. Major ion and isotopic (δ18Owater; δDwater; δ18OSO4; δ34SSO4; δ34SH2S; 87Sr/86Sr) signatures of formation waters were used to evaluate the distribution and sources of fluids and water-rock interactions by comparison with the rock record. There are two sources of salinity in basinal fluids: (1) diagenetically altered highly evaporated paleo-seawater-derived brines associated with the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation evaporites; and (2) dissolution of evaporites by topographically driven meteoric circulation. Fresh to brackish groundwater in the shallow Cretaceous Burro Canyon Formation contains low Cu and high SO4 concentrations and shows oxidation of sulfides by meteoric water, while U concentrations are higher than within other formation waters. Deeper brines in the Pennsylvanian Honaker Trail Formation were derived from evaporated paleo-seawater mixed with meteoric water that oxidized sulfides and dissolved gypsum and have high 87Sr/86Sr indicating interaction with radiogenic siliciclastic minerals. Upward migration of reduced (hydrocarbon- and H2S-bearing) saline fluids from the Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation along faults likely bleached sandstones in shallower sediments and provided a reduced trap for later Cu and U deposition. The distribution of existing fluids in the Paradox Basin provides important constraints to understand the rock record over geological time.

A consensus statement about indications for post-surgical radioiodine therapy (RIT) in differentiated thyroid cancer patients (DTC) was recently published by the European Thyroid Association (ETA) 1. This publication discusses indications for RIT on the basis of an individual risk assessment. Many of the conclusions of this consensus statement are well founded and accepted across the disciplines involved. However, especially from the perspective of nuclear medicine, as the discipline responsible for indicating and executing RIT, some of the recommendations may require further clarification with regard to their compatibility with established best practice and national standards of care. Assessment of the indications for RIT is strongly dependent on the weighing up of benefits and risks. On the basis of longstanding clinical experience in nuclear medicine, RIT represents a highly specific precision medicine procedure of proven efficacy with a favorable side-effect profile. This distinguishes RIT significantly from other adjuvant oncological therapies and has resulted in the establishment of this procedure as a usually well-tolerated, standard safety measure. With regard to its favorable risk/benefit ratio, this procedure should not be unnecessarily restricted, in the interest of offering reassurance to the patients. Both patients' interests and regional/national differences need to be taken into account. We would therefore like to comment on the recent consensus from the perspective of authors and to provide recommendations based on the respective published data.Die European Thyroid Association (ETA) hat vor Kurzem eine Konsenserklärung zu den Indikationen für die postoperative Radiojodtherapie (RIT) bei Patienten mit differenziertem Schilddrüsenkrebs veröffentlicht 1. In dieser Veröffentlichung werden die Indikationen für eine RIT auf der Grundlage einer individuellen Risikobewertung erörtert. Viele der Schlussfolgerungen dieser Konsenserklärung sind gut begründet und werden von allen beteiligten Disziplinen akzeptiert. Insbesondere aus der Sicht der Nuklearmedizin, die für die Indikationsstellung und Durchführung der RIT verantwortlich ist, bedürfen einige der Empfehlungen jedoch einer weiteren Klärung im Hinblick auf ihre Vereinbarkeit mit bewährten Verfahren und nationalen Versorgungsstandards. Die Beurteilung der Indikationen für eine RIT ist stark von der Abwägung von Nutzen und Risiken abhängig. Auf der Grundlage der langjährigen klinischen Erfahrung in der Nuklearmedizin stellt die RIT ein hochspezifisches Verfahren der Präzisionsmedizin mit nachgewiesener Wirksamkeit und günstigem Nebenwirkungsprofil dar. Dies unterscheidet die RIT deutlich von anderen adjuvanten onkologischen Therapien und hat dazu geführt, dass sich dieses Verfahren als eine in der Regel gut verträgliche, sichere Standardmaßnahme etabliert hat. In Anbetracht des günstigen Nutzen-Risiko-Verhältnisses sollte dieses Verfahren nicht unnötig eingeschränkt werden, um den Patienten Sicherheit zu geben. Dabei müssen sowohl die Interessen der Patienten als auch regionale/nationale Unterschiede berücksichtigt werden. Wir möchten daher den aktuellen Konsens aus Sicht der Autoren kommentieren und Empfehlungen auf der Basis der jeweils veröffentlichten Daten geben.

Previous research indicates that user comments serve as exemplars and thus have an effect on perceived public opinion. Moreover, they also shape the attitudes of their readers. However, studies almost exclusively focus on controversial issues if they explore the consequences of user comments for attitudes and perceived public opinion. The current study wants to find out if hate speech attacking social groups due to characteristics such as religion or sexual orientation also has an effect on the way people think about these groups and how they think society perceives them. Moreover, we also investigated the effects of hate speech on prejudiced attitudes. To explore the hypotheses and research questions, we preregistered and conducted a 3 × 2 experimental study varying the amount of hate speech (none/few/many hateful comments) and the group that was attacked (Muslims/homosexuals). Results show no effects of the amount of hate speech on perceived public opinion for both groups. However, if homosexuals are attacked, hate speech negatively affects perceived social cohesion. Moreover, for both groups, we find interaction effects between preexisting attitudes and hate speech for discriminating demands. This indicates that hate speech can increase polarization in society.

Current theories of planetary evolution predict that infant giant planets have large radii and very low densities before they slowly contract to reach their final size after about several hundred million years1,2. These theoretical expectations remain untested so far as the detection and characterization of very young planets is extremely challenging due to the intense stellar activity of their host stars3,4. Only the recent discoveries of young planetary transiting systems allow initial constraints to be placed on evolutionary models5,6,7. With an estimated age of 20 million years, V1298 Tau is one of the youngest solar-type stars known to host transiting planets; it harbours a system composed of four planets, two Neptune-sized, one Saturn-sized and one Jupiter-sized8,9. Here we report a multi-instrument radial velocity campaign of V1298 Tau, which allowed us to determine the masses of two of the planets in the system. We find that the two outermost giant planets, V1298 Tau b and e (0.64 ± 0.19 and 1.16 ± 0.30 Jupiter masses, respectively), seem to contradict our knowledge of early-stages planetary evolution. According to models, they should reach their mass–radius combination only hundreds of millions of years after formation. Analisar a prevalência de práticas de prevenção de quedas de cuidadores informais de idosos e os fatores associados. Estudo transversal, com 97 cuidadores informais de idosos de cinco unidades de Estratégia Saúde da Família. A coleta de dados ocorreu de junho e agosto de 2017, usando questionário validado. Na análise multivariada utilizou-se a regressão múltipla de Poisson. A prevalência das práticas de prevenção de quedas dos cuidadores foi de 26,8%. As medidas preventivas de quedas mais adotadas e referidas pelos cuidadores foram principalmente vigiar o idoso (57,7%), evitar tapetes soltos na casa (28,9%) e piso molhado (23,7%), orientar o idoso a caminhar com cautela (18,6%) e restringir as atividades do idoso (12,4%). As práticas de prevenção foram associadas às variáveis anos de estudo (p=0,027), estado civil (p=0,047) e atitudes dos cuidadores (p=0,037). A prevalência de práticas preventivas de quedas realizadas pelos cuidadores é baixa e necessitam ser estimuladas pelos profissionais.

Sedimentary rocks of the Paradox Basin of the Colorado Plateau (southwestern USA) record widespread manifestations of paleo–fluid flow and fluid-rock reactions including Cu, U-V, and Fe-Mn mineral deposits, Si and Ca metasomatism, hydrocarbon accumulations, and bleached sandstones. Many of these are spatially associated with faults. Here we show evidence for a widespread phase of fault-related fluid migration and mineralization at 41–48 Ma in the Paradox Basin. We measured K-Ar dates of multiple size fractions of clay-rich fault gouge, yielding statistically overlapping dates of authigenic (1Md) illite for the Salt Valley (47.0 ± 3.0 Ma), Kane Springs (47.7 ± 3.8 Ma), Cliffdweller (43.4 ± 4.6 Ma), Courthouse (41.9 ± 2.3 Ma), Lisbon Valley (45.3 ± 0.9 Ma), and GTO (48.1 ± 2.6 Ma) faults. The latter two have an illite Rb-Sr isochron age of 50.9 ± 3.5 Ma, and fault-adjacent bornite has a Re-Os isochron age of 47.5 ± 1.5 Ma. Authigenic illite from a paleo–oil reservoir near the Courthouse fault formed from the interaction of reduced fluids with oxidized red-bed sandstones at 41.1 ± 2.5 Ma. The Moab and Keystone faults have older authigenic illite ages of 59.1 ± 5.7 Ma and 65.2 ± 1.0 Ma, respectively. Our results show a close temporal relationship between fault gouge formation, red-bed bleaching, and Cu mineralization during an enigmatic time interval, raising questions about drivers of Eocene fluid flow.

Guanylate binding proteins (GBPs) are interferon-γ-activated large GTPases, effective against intracellular pathogens likeToxoplasma gondii. Their host-protective functions require oligomerization, however, the oligomer structures have not been completely resolved yet. Here, we provide dimer models for hGBP1 and the murine GBPs 2 and 7 (mGBP2 and mGBP7) based on integrative modeling that involves the crystal structure of the G domain dimer of hGBP1, cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), protein-protein docking, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of hGBP1, mGBP2 and mGBP7. We first compare the sequences and protein dynamics of the monomeric hGBP1, mGBP2, and mGBP7, finding that the M/E domain of all three proteins is highly mobile featuring a hinge movement, yet this motion is less pronounced in mGBP7 while its GTPase (G) domain is more flexible. These differences can be explained by the variations in the sequences between mGBP7 and hGBP1/mGBP2 and extend to their dimers. While hGBP1 and its close orthologue mGBP2 dimerize via their G domains, mGBP7 shows a variety of possible dimer structures, among them parallel and crossed-stalk conformations. The G domain is only partly involved in mGBP7 dimerization, which provides a rational why mGBP7, unlike hGBP1 and mGBP2, can dimerize in the absence of GTP. The different GBP dimer structures, which still exhibit hinge movements to certain degrees, are expected to encode diverging functions, such as a destabilization of pathogenic membranes or fusion of the parasitophorous vacuole membrane with the autophagic machinery.

ZusammenfassungIn den nächsten zwei Jahrzehnten werden in Deutschland die Babyboomer aus dem Erwerbsleben ausscheiden. Erwerbsarbeit muss dann von der zahlenschwachen „Pillenknick“-Generation geleistet werden. Mehr ältere Personen in der Gesellschaft bedeuten trotz und teilweise wegen verbesserter medizinischer Möglichkeiten eine höhere Belastung durch Gesundheits- und Pflegeversorgung, die finanziert und personell getragen werden muss. Um mit weniger Erwerbstätigen mehr Bedürftige zu versorgen, muss das Gesundheitssystem umgebaut werden. Weil allerdings die Entwicklungen schleichend verlaufen, ist das Problembewusstsein vielerorts noch gering. Hier fokussieren wir auf den Bereich in unserem Gesundheitssystem, welcher mit am stärksten wächst und zusätzlich den größten Personalbedarf pro Betroffenem hat: die Versorgung schwerkranker und selbsthilfeeingeschränkter Menschen. Das Nebeneinander von Krankenhaus, Rehabilitationsklinik und Pflegeinstitution ist historisch bedingt und unzureichend koordiniert. Es fördert die Tendenz, selbsthilfeeingeschränkte Patient*innen in Pflegeeinrichtungen ohne Chance auf Wiederbefähigung zu entlassen, statt sie zu rehabilitieren. Mit dem weiteren demografischen Wandel droht sich diese Tendenz zu verstärken. Hier versuchen wir in einem ersten von zwei Teilen eine Beschreibung der aktuellen Situation.
