Current recruitment and retention issues within the armed forces draw links with breach of the psychological contract – the dynamics of the employee–employer relationship. Compared with civilian contexts, a military position is unique, however, there is a dearth of conceptual investigation regarding the lived experiences of military personnel, particularly with respect to how such contracts form. This paper combined a phenomenological approach with the critical decision method to investigate the lived experiences informing contract formation and contract trajectory of ex-military personnel. Lived experiences pointed to the formulation of ‘fuzzy’ contracts, impressions from defence force recruitment, specific tipping points around organisational commitment, and large differences between the fidelity of the idealised and actualised self/job. Seven superordinate themes are elicited that trace the formation and trajectory of the contract. A schematised account of findings is developed to provide avenues to investigate how beliefs form in a military contract context and their outcomes.

Nightwork is associated with fatigue, decreased sleep quality, and impairments in cognitive function. While attentional tasks have been widely investigated, there are limited data on more complex tasks, such as executive functioning during nightwork. Workers often need to rapidly shift between tasks, adapting to new and complex situations. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of nightwork on executive functioning. Healthy, non-shift working individuals (N=8; 5F, 24.8±5.0y) participated in a 7-day live-in laboratory study. Participants underwent an 8h TIB baseline sleep, followed by 4 consecutive simulated nightshifts with 7h TIB sleep during the day and an 8h TIB recovery sleep. Participants were assessed for executive function at 2000h, 2200h, 0100h and 0400h. Executive functioning was assessed with a mental flexibility switching task where a 3D rotation and math task were displayed simultaneously with an arrow indicating which task to complete in a random order. Resulting throughput data were analysed using linear mixed models. There was a main effect of time of night (F(3,77)=4.81,p=.004) on throughput such that there was a speed accuracy trade off over the night shift with slower switching ability later in the shift. There was also a main effect of nightshift (F(2,77)=54.33,p This study suggests executive functioning is impaired on nightshift with worse performance at 0400h. Task improvements over consecutive nightshifts may have been due to learning or acclimation to nightwork. Understanding complex task performance on nightshift is important for tailoring countermeasures.

Nightwork disrupts circadian rhythms and impairs glucose metabolism, increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes. We investigated eliminating or reducing the amount of food consumed during simulated nightwork as a countermeasure to reduce the impact of circadian disruption on glucose metabolism. N=52 healthy, non-shiftworking participants (24.4±4.9 years; 26 Females; BMI 23.8±2.5kg/m2) underwent a 7-day laboratory protocol with an 8h TIB baseline sleep, followed by 4 simulated nightshifts with 7h TIB daytime sleep and an 8h TIB recovery sleep in groups of 4 participants. Each group was randomly assigned to a meal-at-midnight (n=17, 30% energy requirements), snack-at-midnight (n=16, 10% energy requirements) or no-eating-at-midnight (n=19) condition. Total 24h energy and macronutrient intake were constant across conditions. Standard oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were conducted on day2 (baseline), and day7 (recovery). Objectives: This study examines the impacts of peak summer demand on operator workload and fatigue in a maritime environment. Methods: Participants (n = 12) were senior shipboard personnel who were working during the summer “double sailing” period for a roll-on roll-off ferry service. Wrist actigraphy was used to determine sleep opportunity and sleep duration, as well as prior sleep, total wake time, performance and alertness at the beginning and end of work periods. Results: Contrary to expectations, sleep was significantly greater, and both subjective estimates of fatigue and objective neurobehavioral performance were not impacted negatively by periods of increased work intensity. Conclusions: This study highlights a number of features of a fatigue-risk management system that appear to have been instrumental in ensuring adequate sleep and performance was maintained throughout periods of increased operational intensity. As a simple colloquial description of the fatigue-risk management system at play in this operation, it was fine to “work hard” if you were able to “sleep hard” as well. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

This study investigates the effect of passenger and phone conversations on sleep-restricted driving. Six volunteers (50% male, mean age 24.8 +/- 4.3years) had their sleep restricted to 4h in bed followed by a 20-min simulated drive on three separate occasions. Each drive included either a passenger conversation, a mobile phone conversation or a quiet passenger. The effect size of a phone conversation on lane deviation was large while passenger conversation was small. The main effect of conversation on lane deviation was non-significant (F(2,10)=2.57, p=0.126). Combining sleep-restricted driving with conversations warrants further investigation. Some shiftwokers in the long-haul transportation industries (i.e. road, rail, sea, air) have the opportunity to sleep in on-board rest facilities during duty periods. These rest facilities are typically fitted with a seat with a maximum back angle to the vertical of 20 degrees, 40 degrees, or 90 degrees. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of back angle on the quantity and quality of sleep obtained in a seat during a daytime nap. Six healthy adults (3 females aged 27.0 years and 3 males aged 22.7 years) each participated in three conditions. For each condition, participants had a 4-h sleep opportunity in a bed (02:00-06:00 h) followed by a 4-h sleep opportunity in a seat (13:00-17:00 h). The only difference between conditions was in the back angle of the seat to the vertical during the seat-based sleep periods: 20 degrees (upright), 40 degrees (reclined), and 90 degrees (flat). Polysomnographic data were collected during all sleep episodes. For the seat-based sleep episodes, there was a significant effect of back angle on three of four measures of sleep quantity, i.e. total sleep time, slow-wave sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and three of four measures of sleep quality, i.e. latency to REM sleep, arousals, and stage shifts. In general, the quantity and quality of sleep obtained in the reclined and flat seats were better than those obtained in the upright seat. In particular, compared to the flat seat, the reclined seat resulted in similar amounts of total sleep and slow-wave sleep, but 37% less REM sleep; and the upright seat resulted in 29% less total sleep, 30% less slow-wave sleep, and 79% less REM sleep. There are two main mechanisms that may explain the results. First, it is difficult to maintain the head in a comfortable position for sleep when sitting upright, and this is likely exacerbated during REM sleep, when muscle tone is very low. Second, an upright posture increases sympathetic activity and decreases parasympathetic activity, resulting in a heightened level of physiological arousal. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Shared responsibility for bushfire preparedness includes self-reliant communities with the skills, knowledge and ability to minimize the impacts of bushfires on their homes, properties and community. Community preparedness groups are a potentially effective way to achieve this self-reliance. Previous research shows that these groups increase people's knowledge and awareness of risk, their planning and preparations, and community cohesion and collaboration. However, these are not outcomes for all groups in all places. Groups face a perennial problem of low participation and 'buy in' from the local area due in part to individual differences in the desire to be part of a group, low levels of risk awareness, community turbidity, and low social capital. This paper proposes that the skills and characteristics of the group coordinator in responding to and overcoming these challenges are key to a group's longevity, collaboration and success. Using interviews and a survey with Community Fire Safe group coordinators and members affected by the 2015 Sampson Flat fire in South Australia, we found the key elements of successful coordination were active outreach to existing neighbourhood residents, newcomers and those 'not into groups' using face to face and personalized communication adapted for different people's needs. This active, determined persistence in communicating bushfire safety was motivated by an understanding that low interest can be overcome and that overcoming it is the key role of the group coordinator. Training for coordinators in the individual and group processes underpinning behavior change, in personalized communication, and adapting materials for diverse groups is likely to improve group outcomes. Although a nonlinear time-of-day and prior wake interaction on performance has been well documented, two recent studies have aimed to incorporate the influences of sleep restriction into this paradigm. Through the use of sleeprestricted forced desynchrony protocols, both studies reported a time-of-day × sleep restriction interaction, as well as a time-of-day × prior wake × sleep dose three-way interaction. The current study aimed to investigate these interactions on simulated driving performance, a more complex task with ecological validity for the problem of fatigued driving. The driving performance of 41 male participants (mean ± SD: 22.8 ±2.2 yrs) was assessed on a 10- min simulated driving task with the standard deviation of lateral position (SDLAT) measured. Using a between-group design, participants were subjected to either a control condition of 9.33 h of sleep/18.66 h of wake, a moderate sleep-restriction (SR) condition of 7 h of sleep/21 h of wake, or a severe SR condition of 4.66 h of sleep/23.33 h of wake. In each condition, participants were tested at 2.5-h intervals after waking across 7 × 28-h d of forced desynchrony. Driving sessions occurred at nine doses of prior wake, within six divisions of the circadian cycle based on core body temperature (CBT). Mixed-models analyses of variance (ANOVAs) revealed significant main effects of time-of-day, prior wake, sleep debt, and sleep dose on SDLAT. Additionally, significant two-way interactions of timeof- day × prior wake and time-of-day × sleep debt, as well as significant three-way interactions of time-of-day × prior wake × sleep debt and time-of-day × sleep debt × sleep dose were observed. Although limitations such as the presence of practice effects and large standard errors are noted, the study concludes with three findings. The main effects demonstrate that extending wake, reducing sleep, and driving at poor times of day all significantly impair driving performance at an individual level. In addition to this, combining either extended wake or a sleep debt with the early morning hours greatly decreases driving performance. Around a fifth of all road accidents can be attributed to fatigued drivers. Previous studies indicate that driving performance is influenced by time of day and decreases with sustained wakefulness. However, these influences occur naturally in unison, confounding their effects. Typically, when people drive at a poor time of day and with extended wake, their sleep is also restricted. Hence, the aim of the current study was to determine the independent effects of prior wake and time of day on driving performance under conditions of sleep restriction. The driving performance of fourteen male participants (21.8 ± 3.8 years, mean ±SD) was assessed during a 10 min simulated driving task with speed/lane mean, variability and violations (speeding and crashes) measured. Participants were tested at 2.5 h intervals after waking, across 7 × 28 h days with a sleep:wake ratio of 1:5. By forced desynchrony each driving session occurred at 9 doses of prior wake and within 6 divisions of the circadian cycle based on core body temperature. A mixed models ANOVA revealed significant main effects of circadian phase, prior wake and sleep debt on lane violations. In addition, three significant two-way interactions (circadian phase × prior wake, prior wake × sleep debt, sleep debt × circadian phase) and one three-way interaction (circadian × prior wake × sleep debt) were identified. The presence of the large interaction effects shows that the influence of each factor is largely dependent on the magnitude of the other factors. For example, the presence of the time of day influence on driving performance is dependent on the length of prior wake or the presence of sleep debt. The findings suggest that people are able to undertake a low-difficulty simulated drive safely, at least for a short period, during their circadian nadir provided that they have had sufficient sleep and have not been awake too long. Summary Subjective alertness may provide some insight into reduced performance capacity under conditions suboptimal to neurobehavioural functioning, yet the accuracy of this insight remains unclear. We therefore investigated whether subjective alertness reflects the full extent of neurobehavioural impairment during the biological night when sleep is restricted. Twenty-seven young healthy males were assigned to a standard forced desynchrony (FD) protocol (n = 13; 9.33 h in bed/28 h day) or a sleep-restricted FD protocol (n = 14; 4.67 h in bed/28 h day). For both protocols, subjective alertness and neurobehavioural performance were measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), respectively; both measures were given at various combinations of prior wake and circadian phase (biological night versus biological day). Scores on both measures were standardized within individuals against their respective baseline average and standard deviation. We found that PVT performance and VAS rating deviated from their respective baseline to a similar extent during the standard protocol, yet a greater deviation was observed for PVT performance than VAS rating during the sleep-restricted protocol. The discrepancy between the two measures during the sleep-restricted protocol was particularly prominent during the biological night compared with the biological day. Thus, subjective alertness did not reflect the full extent of performance impairment when sleep was restricted, particularly during the biological night. Given that subjective alertness is often the only available information upon which performance capacity is assessed, our results suggest that sleep-restricted individuals are likely to under-estimate neurobehavioural impairment, particularly during the biological night.

Conclusions: The performance consequence of sleep restriction in our study was prominent during the biological night, even when the prior wake duration was short, and this performance consequence was in forms of waking state instability. This result is likely due to acute homeostatic sleep pressure remaining high despite the sleep episode. Study Objectives: The homeostatic-circadian regulation of neurobehavioral functioning is not well understood in that the role of sleep dose in relation to prior wake and circadian phase remains largely unexplored. The aim of the present study was to examine the neurobehavioral impact of sleep dose at different combinations of prior wake and circadian phase. Design: A between-participant design involving 2 forced desynchrony protocols varying in sleep dose. Both protocols comprised 7 repetitions of a 28-h sleep/wake cycle. The sleep dose in a standard protocol was 9.33 h per 28-h day and 4.67 h in a sleep-restricted protocol. Setting: A time-isolation laboratory at the Centre for Sleep Research, the University of South Australia. Participants: A total of 27 young healthy males participated in the study with 13 in the standard protocol (age 22.5+- 2.2 y) and 14 in the sleep-restricted protocol (age 21.8 +-3.8 y). Interventions: Wake periods during both protocols were approximately 4 h delayed each 28-h day relative to the circadian system, allowing performance testing at different combinations of prior wake and circadian phase. The manipulation in sleep dose between the 2 protocols, therefore, allowed the impact of sleep dose on neurobehavioral performance to be examined at various combinations of prior wake and circadian phase. Measurements and Results: Neurobehavioral function was assessed using the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). There was a sleep dose x circadian phase interaction effect on PVT performance such that sleep restriction resulted in slower and more variable response times, predominantly during the biological night. Study Objectives: The state instability hypothesis posits that increasing sleep drive brings about escalating state instability in attention, making neurobehavioral performance increasingly variable. This hypothesis predicts that performance variability is a function of prior wake, circadian phase, and time on task. These predictions have been supported when wakefulness is beyond the habitual wake period. Our study aimed to test these predictions within the habitual wake period. Design: A 12-calendar-day 28-h forced desynchrony protocol consisting of 7 repetitions of a 28-h sleep/wake cycle, with two-thirds time awake and one-third time in bed. Each wake period included 7 equally spaced 1-h testing sessions. Setting: A time-isolation sleep laboratory. Participants: Thirteen young healthy males. Interventions: Wake periods during the protocol were 4 h delayed each 28-h "day" relative to the circadian system, such that they were distributed across the whole circadian cycle. This allowed performance testing at different combinations of prior wake of a habitual length (i.e., < 18 h) and circadian phase. Measurements and Results: Performance variability was indexed by standard deviation of response times within a 10-min psychomotor vigilance task. We found that response times became more variable with increasing wakefulness and towards circadian nadir, i.e., when sleep drive was increasing. These changes in response time variability were however not dependent on time on task, which is likely due to the modest level of sleep drive in our study. Conclusions: The state instability hypothesis, as an explanation for the responsiveness of neurobehavioral performance to increasing sleep drive, is supported during the habitual wake period. Shiftworkers are often required to sleep at inappropriate phases of their circadian timekeeping system, with implications for the dynamics of ultradian sleep stages. The independent effects of these changes on cognitive throughput performance are not well understood. This is because the effects of sleep on performance are usually confounded with circadian factors that cannot be controlled under normal day/night conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of prior wake, core body temperature, and sleep stages to cognitive throughput performance under conditions of forced desynchrony (FD). A total of 11 healthy young adult males resided in a sleep laboratory in which day/night zeitgebers were eliminated and ambient room temperature, lighting levels, and behavior were controlled. The protocol included 2 training days, a baseline day, and 7 × 28-h FD periods. Each FD period consisted of an 18.7-h wake period followed by a 9.3-h rest period. Sleep was assessed using standard polysomnography. Core body temperature and physical activity were assessed continuously in 1-min epochs. Cognitive throughput was measured by a 5-min serial addition and subtraction (SAS) task and a 90-s digit symbol substitution (DSS) task. These were administered in test sessions scheduled every 2.5 h across the wake periods of each FD period. On average, sleep periods had a mean (± standard deviation) duration of 8.5 (±1.2) h in which participants obtained 7.6 (±1.4) h of total sleep time. This included 4.2 (±1.2) h of stage 1 and stage 2 sleep (S1-S2 sleep), 1.6 (±0.6) h of slow-wave sleep (SWS), and 1.8 (±0.6) h of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. A mixed-model analysis with five covariates indicated significant fixed effects on cognitive throughput for circadian phase, prior wake time, and amount of REM sleep. Significant effects for S1-S2 sleep and SWS were not found. The results demonstrate that variations in core body temperature, time awake, and amount of REM sleep are associated with changes in cognitive throughput performance. The absence of significant effect for SWS may be attributable to the truncated range of sleep period durations sampled in this study. However, because the mean and variance for SWS were similar to REM sleep, these results suggest that cognitive throughput may be more sensitive to variations in REM sleep than SWS. Neurobehavioral function deteriorates with increasing homeostatic sleep pressure during wakefulness. It has been claimed that some individuals exhibit a quicker rate of such deterioration than others, thus being more vulnerable than others to the detrimental impact of increasing homeostatic sleep pressure. Evidence supporting the claim, however, has been limited by methodological issues. To overcome these limitations, the current study used a 12-calendar-day, 28-h forced desynchrony (FD) protocol (sleep:wake period = 1:2) to study individual differences in the rate of change in neurobehavioral performance with increasing homeostatic sleep pressure. Neurobehavioral performance was assessed with a psychomotor vigilance task and a serial addition subtraction task. A significant performance decline on both tasks was revealed within as short as 17 h of wakefulness. The rates of decline of individual performance trajectories were, however, not different from the group average rate. This suggests that individuals are not differentially vulnerable to the detrimental impact of increasing homeostatic sleep pressure.

The magnetic susceptibility of seven pyridine carboxylic acid complexes of silver(II) have been measured over the temperature range 300–80°K. All the complexes show Curie or Curie–Weiss behaviour but silver(II) nicotinate (θ= 52°) is believed to be antiferromagnetic. I.r. and electronic spectronic spectral data are also reported and correlated with the structures of the complexes. Silver(II) dipicolinate tetrahydrate (dipicolinic acid = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) probably has a pseudo-tetrahedral configuration. The spectral and magnetic properties of related copper(II) and silver(II) complexes with pyridine monocarboxylic acids are compared.

Crystals of silver(II) bis(pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate) monohydrate are orthorhombic, space group Pnna, with a= 7·874(5), b= 10·942(7), c= 17·734(12)A, and Z= 4. The intensities of 761 reflections above background were collected by counter methods and the structure has been refined to a conventional R of 0·09. The molecule has imposed two-fold symmetry. The silver atom is six-co-ordinate being bonded to the nitrogen and two oxygen atoms from each of the tridentate ligand molecules. The two ligands co-ordinate in a strikingly different manner, the co-ordination best being described as from anionic (A) and neutral (B) ligand molecules. For ligand (A), the silver atom forms single bonds to the nitrogen [2·09(2)A] and to the two negatively charged (and crystallographically equivalent) oxygen atoms [2·20(1)A]. For ligand (B), the silver atoms is bonded less strongly to the nitrogen [2·21 (2)A] and to the two ketonic oxygen atoms [2·53(1)A]. The electronic absorption spectra of the monohydrate and tetrahydrate are very similar and quite unlike those of silver(II) species in square-planar or tetragonally distorted octahedral environments.

Crystals of bis(pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylato)silver(II) dihydrate are monoclinic, space group P21/n, with a= 6·002(4), b= 10·682(7), c= 12·842(8)A, β= 90·83(10)°, and Z= 2. The intensities of 864 reflections above background were collected by counter methods and the structure has been refined to R 0·067. The structure consists of molecules of Ag (C7H4NO4)2 in which each ligand molecule is strongly bonded to the silver atom through the nitrogen atom [2·12(1)A] and an oxygen atom of the carboxy-group in the 2-position [2·13(1)A]. The stacking of the molecules in the a direction and the twist in the 3-carboxy-group leave the ketonic oxygen atoms O(4) in positions to form weak interactions (2·98 A) with the silver atoms in adjacent (in a) molecules. Consequently the environment of each silver atom is best considered as approximating to a tetragonally distorted octahedron.

The synthesis and characterization of the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (dpcH2) are reported. The 1 : 2 complexes are shown to have the structure M(dpcH)2,3H2O, containing monoanionic terdentate dpcH ligand molecules, with three molecules of ‘lattice’ water, whereas the 1 : 1 complexes M(dpc),3H2O are six-co-ordinate and contain co-ordinated water. Anhydrous polymeric [Co-(dpc)]n has been prepared and its chemical reactivity investigated. Rhodium(II) acetate reacts with dpcH2 to afford a rhodium(II) complex Rh(dpc),3H2O. The rhodium(III) complexes Na[Rh(dpc)2],2H2O and Ph4As-[Rh(dpc)2],xH2O have also been prepared. Characterization of the rhodium complexes has included a study of their X-ray photoelectron spectra and a measurement of the rhodium 3d3/2 and 3d5/2 binding energies.
