To understand the mechanisms by which Fe and Cr additions increase the corrosion rate of irradiated Zr alloys, a combination of experimental (atom probe tomography, x-ray diffraction and thermoelectric power measurements) and modelling (density functional theory) techniques are employed to investigate the non-equilibrium solubility and clustering of Fe and Cr in binary Zr alloys. Cr occupies both interstitial and substitutional sites in the -Zr lattice, Fe favours interstitial sites, and a low-symmetry site that was not previously modelled is found to be the most favourable for Fe. Lattice expansion as a function of alloying concentration (in the dilute regime) is strongly anisotropic for Fe additions, expanding the $c$-axis while contracting the $a$-axis. Defect clusters are observed at higher solution concentrations, which induce a smaller amount of lattice strain compared to the dilute defects. In the presence of a Zr vacancy, all two-atom clusters are more soluble than individual point defects and as many as four Fe or three Cr atoms could be accommodated in a single Zr vacancy. The Zr vacancy is critical for the increased solubility of defect clusters, the implications for irradiation induced microstructure changes in Zr alloys are discussed., 15 pages including figure, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory infrared observations of the recurrent nova T Pyx during its 2011 eruption, complemented by ground-base optical-infrared photometry. We find that the eruption has heated dust in the pre-existing nebulosity associated with T Pyx. This is most likely interstellar dust swept up by T Pyx - either during previous eruptions or by a wind - rather than the accumulation of dust produced during eruptions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present infrared spectra of the binary XX Oph obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The data show some evidence for the presence of solid C_60 - the first detection of C_60 in the solid phase - together with the well-known ``Unidentified Infrared'' emission features. We suggest that, in the case of XX Oph, the C_60 is located close to the hot component, and that in general it is preferentially excited by stars having effective temperatures in the range 15,000-30,000K. C_60 may be common in circumstellar environments, but un-noticed in the absence of a suitable exciting source., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the "peculiar variable" DZ Cru, identified by Rushton et al. (2008, MNRAS, 386, 289) as a classical nova. A dust shell, on which are superimposed a number of features, is prominent in the 5-35micron range some 4 years after eruption. We suggest that the dust in DZ Cru is primarily hydrogenated amorphous carbon in which aliphatic bands currently predominate, and which may either become predominantly aromatic as the dust is photo-processed by ultraviolet radiation from the stellar remnant, or more likely completely destroyed., Comment: MNRAS letters, accepted

We present the results of modelling the 0.45--1 micron spectral energy distribution of V838 Mon for 2002 November. Synthetic spectra were calculated using the NextGen model atmospheres of Hauschildt et al. (1999), which incorporate line lists for H2O, TiO, CrH, FeH, CO, and MgH, as well as the VALD atomic line list. Fits to the observed spectra show that, in 2002 November, the effective temperature of V838 Mon was approximately 2000 +/-100 K. Our theoretical spectra show a comparatively weak dependence on log g. Preliminary analysis of the hot star observed together with V838 Mon shows it to be a normal B3V dwarf., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figs, accepted by A&A

We describe the results of fitting simple spherically symmetric models to the first overtone CO and AlO A-X (2-0) bands in V838 Mon. We find that the temperature and column of both CO and AlO systematically decline over the period 2002 October - 2005 February and that an additional, hotter and denser, component is present from 2005 January. We also describe the results of an observation of the star and its light echo at 850micron. We do not detect the `infrared' echo at these wavelength, and place an upper limit of 3x10^7 cm^-2 on the column of grains., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, to appear in ASP Conf. VLT and SALT spectroscopy of U Sco were obtained $\sim$18 and $\sim$30 months after the 2010 outburst. From these spectra the accretion disc is shown to take at least 18 months to become fully reformed. The spectral class of the companion is constrained to be F8$^{+5}_{-6}$\,IV-V at the 95% confidence level when the irradiated face of the companion is visible.
