2. Exploring a Pedagogy for Understanding and Developing Chinese EFL Students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence

- Abstract
This chapter explores how Byram’s (1997) intercultural communicative competence (ICC) framework can inform the development of an intercultural communication course delivered within English language education in a Chinese university. The theoretical concept of ICC represents a comprehensive set of criteria that provides a useful basis for designing intercultural language learning curricula and associated learning objectives in a systematic way. At the same time, the incorporation of such a theoretical concept into the language curriculum within the Chinese EFL context also presents a challenge to teachers, particularly given the exam-oriented education system and the traditional focus on grammatical knowledge and skills. In this chapter, we report on an exploratory action research study which aimed to investigate how the integration of intercultural dimensions into an English as Foreign Language (EFL) syllabus can provide Chinese university students with opportunities to develop their ICC. This involved the first author, Qin, in the development and implementation of a 6-week sequence of intercultural teaching for undergraduate English language students across multiple majors in a Chinese university. The study reveals the emergence of complementary themes to the five savoirs in Byram’s (1997) ICC framework, and recommends further development and implementation of contextualised intercultural pedagogies that integrate culturally appropriate teaching materials, and creative student-centred learning strategies. In the next sections, we first provide an overview of ICC in English language teaching in the Chinese context, and then present the details of the study and the Intercultural English Course (IEC).

Background To determine the frequency of, and factors associated with, death in hospital following ICU discharge to the ward. Methods The Large observational study to UNderstand the Global impact of Severe Acute respiratory FailurE study was an international, multicenter, prospective cohort study of patients with severe respiratory failure, conducted across 459 ICUs from 50 countries globally. This study aimed to understand the frequency and factors associated with death in hospital in patients who survived their ICU stay. We examined outcomes in the subpopulation discharged with no limitations of life sustaining treatments (‘treatment limitations’), and the subpopulations with treatment limitations. Results 2186 (94%) patients with no treatment limitations discharged from ICU survived, while 142 (6%) died in hospital. 118 (61%) of patients with treatment limitations survived while 77 (39%) patients died in hospital. Patients without treatment limitations that died in hospital after ICU discharge were older, more likely to have COPD, immunocompromise or chronic renal failure, less likely to have trauma as a risk factor for ARDS. Patients that died post ICU discharge were less likely to receive neuromuscular blockade, or to receive any adjunctive measure, and had a higher pre- ICU discharge non-pulmonary SOFA score. A similar pattern was seen in patients with treatment limitations that died in hospital following ICU discharge. Conclusions A significant proportion of patients die in hospital following discharge from ICU, with higher mortality in patients with limitations of life-sustaining treatments in place. Non-survivors had higher systemic illness severity scores at ICU discharge than survivors. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02010073.

International funding is increasingly important in supporting conservation in mega-biodiverse countries. However, it remains unclear which donors invest in which conservation objectives and where, making it difficult to identify gaps and key actors to influence. Here we identified 1947 foreign-aided conservation projects in South America's major deforestation frontiers and summarized their objectives and interventions over time and space. We found that conserving nature for its own sake and for ecosystem services remained key objectives, but the types of interventions varied considerably over time. Geographically, international conservation prioritized moist forests over drier biomes, despite equally high deforestation risk. Different donor groups emphasized specific objectives and interventions that reflected socioecological links (e.g., bird migration, colonial history) between donating and receiving regions, as well as the donors’ values (e.g., iconic/endangered species, human rights). These telecoupled patterns provide both opportunities and barriers for conservation and have implications for conservation prioritization strategies.

5. Inducible responses to antagonistic predation risks are not in a dilemma: Evidences from multi-traits and transcriptome of Ceriodaphnia

Inducible defenses of prey are evolved under diverse and variable predation risks. In the co-evolution of prey and multiple predators with antagonistic selection pressures, whether inducible defense responses of prey will fall into a dilemma and its underlying mechanism are still unclear. Based on the antagonistic predation pressure from invertebrate predator Chaoborus larvae and vertebrate predator fish, we studied multi-traits and transcriptome of the freshwater crustacean Ceriodaphnia cornuta under multiple predation risks. Our results showed that Chaoborus larvae predation risks altered the expression of genes encoding cuticle protein and changed the biosynthesis of steroid hormone, cutin, suberine, and wax, promoting Ceriodaphnia to express horns and grow larger at a late development stage, whereas fish predation risks mainly triggered responses in genes encoding ribosome and pathways of unsaturated fatty acids biosynthesis, cysteine and methionine metabolism, resulting in a smaller individual size and earlier reproduction. The inducible responses on transcription and individual traits both revealed that predator unique responses are dominant and the antagonistic responses are the least. Besides, Pearson correlations between different predator unique responses are extremely weak. Furthermore, the unique individual traits triggered by different predators can be expressed simultaneously. These results indicated that Ceriodaphnia can avoid the dilemma by performing predator unique responses and diverse inducible responses are favored in the co-evolution of zooplankton and multiple predators.

A reduced-order model for analyzing scattering problems with surface integral equation method is proposed in this letter. An equivalent surface (ES) is introduced to enclose the scatterer and the corresponding interaction matrix between the ES and the scatterer is generated. A series of eigenvectors is obtained by performing randomized singular-value decomposition to the matrix. According to the equivalence principle, the wave input–output relation of the scatterer is encapsulated by a limited number of eigenvectors with a given truncation error, which can be precomputed and reused when the location of radiator changes but the scatterer does not. In addition, discrete empirical interpolation method is applied to further accelerate the calculation of the interaction between the radiator and the background. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed scheme.

We propose a broadband multilevel fast multipole algorithm using hybridization of the plane wave and the multipole expansions of Green’s function in the analysis of 3-D electromagnetic problems. In the proposed method, the diagonal plane-wave expansion is used for low order harmonics, which captures most of the propagating spectrums, while the dense multipole expansion is used for high order harmonics, which captures most of the evanescent spectrums. By analyzing the errors and choosing the numbers of harmonics accordingly in the plane wave and the multipole expansions, the method is free of low-frequency breakdown and remains accurate at arbitrarily low frequencies, which is similar to the dense fast multipole algorithm (FMA). Meanwhile, the method reduces to the conventional diagonal FMA as the frequency increases. Therefore, it can be regarded as the generalization of the conventional dense and diagonal FMAs. Numerical studies in this paper show that very high accuracies can be achieved using the method.

8. Neoproterozoic and Early Paleozoic magmatism in the eastern Lhasa terrane: Implications for Andean-type orogeny along the northern margin of Rodinia and Gondwana

Precambrian and Early Paleozoic magmatic activities in the Lhasa terrane provides important context for distinguishing between the North and South Lhasa terranes, and deciphering the nature and geotectonic history of the northern margin of the Rodinia and Gondwana supercontinents. Here, we conducted a detailed petrological, geochemical, and geochronological study of mafic to granitic meta-intrusive rocks of the Bomi complex in the eastern segment of the Lhasa terrane. Zircon U–Pb dating indicates that these rocks record Neoproterozoic and Cambrian magmatic events, with protolith crystallization ages of ca. 805 Ma, ca. 505 Ma, and ca. 503 Ma for dioritic gneisses, amphibolites (meta-gabbros), and granitic gneisses, respectively. These rocks were later metamorphosed during the Late Jurassic, with zircon U–Pb ages of ca. 158 Ma obtained from the amphibolites. All rocks are enriched in Rb, U and LREEs, and depleted in Nb, Ta, Sr and HREEs, showing affinity with arc-related magmas. With positive zircon εHf(t) values of +1.4 to +6.9, the Neoproterozoic dioritic gneisses are interpreted to have formed by fractional crystallization of mantle-derived magmas. Cambrian amphibolites have εHf(t) values of –3.0 to +6.0, differing from those of coeval granitic gneisses (+0.3 to +3.2). These amphibolites are interpreted to have been derived from partial melting of enriched continental lithospheric mantle with contamination of subducted sediments, whereas the granitic gneisses probably originated from anatexis of lower crust that was induced by coeval emplacement of mantle-derived magma. These rocks are interpreted to be formed in a continental arc setting. When comparing these data with those of other Precambrian and Cambrian magmatic rocks in the Lhasa terrane and other blocks, we propose that the North Lhasa terrane and South Lhasa terrane have distinctive Precambrian basements. The North Lhasa terrane diachronically witnessed an Andean-type orogeny along the northwestern margin of Rodinia during the Neoproterozoic and the northeastern margin of Gondwana during the Early Paleozoic.

Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold rotation-symmetrical crystalline structure induces strong nonlinear spin-orbital coupling, which enables simultaneous control of spatial phase and polarization in second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear transition-metal dichalcogenide metasurface proposed is promising for on-chip integration of nonlinear generation of structured light.

Background: People’s satisfaction has been one important indicator to measure the health care quality in health systems. Medial resource allocation issues have also become an important concern affecting the equity and satisfaction of health service. This study aimed to study the factors affecting people's satisfaction with the services of public health management in China. Specifically, we examine the association between medical resource allocation and satisfaction with the services of public health management.Methods: To explore the associations between medical resource allocation and satisfaction with services of public health management in China, we derived data from the 2013 wave of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS). Models were estimated using multivariable logistic regression analysis.Results: Among factors of evaluation of medical resource allocation, adequacy of medical service resources, market-oriented and insufficiently public of public health services, and convenience of access to public health services were all significantly associated with satisfaction with services of public health management except the balance of medical service resources' distribution. Also, for different service projects and areas, the link between satisfaction with health service and residents’ characteristics also depends on specific service content.Conclusions: There is a link between medical resource allocation and satisfaction with the services of public health management. Medical resource allocation does affect satisfaction with services of public health management. It is necessary to improve the adequacy, publicity of medical services, and convenience of access to public health services in China.

In this paper, we propose a potential-based integral equation solver for low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) problems. In this formulation, the scalar potential ( $\Phi $ ) equation is solved in tandem with the vector potential ( $\textbf {A}$ ) equation. The resulting system is immune to low-frequency catastrophe and accurate in capturing the electrostatic and magnetostatic physics. The fast convergence of the new $\textbf {A}$ - $\Phi $ system, which is a typical symmetric saddle point problem, is made possible through the design of an appropriate left constraint preconditioner. Numerical examples validate the efficiency and stability of the novel formulation in solving both EM scattering and circuit problems over a wide frequency range up to very low frequencies.

We present a stabilized theory to address the breakdown or inaccuracy issue for low-frequency (LF) characteristic mode analysis (CMA). At LFs, to properly preserve the governing quasi-static circuit physics, the eigenvalue decomposition technique is leveraged to formulate a stabilized eigenvalue problem regarding low-order CMs, which dominate the scattering, radiation, and energy storage properties of arbitrarily shaped conducting bodies. Several efficient schemes are introduced for the computation of the low-order CMs in the LF regime, including the augmented electric-field integral equation, the potential ( $\mathbf {A}$ - $\Phi$ )-based integral equation, and the Calderon multiplicative preconditioner. The LF stabilized CMA enables one to understand and interpret the behaviors of complicated conducting objects with a reduced “modal” representation at LFs, which offers an insightful tool for reduced order modeling in circuit design and analysis.

Efficient eigenanalyses are proposed for cavities which are geometrically or materially perturbed. The method leverages the spectral representation of the numerical Green’s function (NGF) of the unperturbed cavity system. The convergence of the series formed by resonant solenoidal modes is accelerated by performing an NGF extraction at one low wavenumber. With spectral NGFs, this approach gives rise to small, linear matrix eigenvalue problems without the generation of spurious DC modes.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) impacts many veterans and active duty soldiers, but diagnosis can be problematic due to biases in self-disclosure of symptoms, stigma within military populations, and limitations identifying those at risk. Prior studies suggest that PTSD may be a systemic illness, affecting not just the brain, but the entire body. Therefore, disease signals likely span multiple biological domains, including genes, proteins, cells, tissues, and organism-level physiological changes. Identification of these signals could aid in diagnostics, treatment decision-making, and risk evaluation. In the search for PTSD diagnostic biomarkers, we ascertained over one million molecular, cellular, physiological, and clinical features from three cohorts of male veterans. In a discovery cohort of 83 warzone-related PTSD cases and 82 warzone-exposed controls, we identified a set of 343 candidate biomarkers. These candidate biomarkers were selected from an integrated approach using (1) data-driven methods, including Support Vector Machine with Recursive Feature Elimination and other standard or published methodologies, and (2) hypothesis-driven approaches, using previous genetic studies for polygenic risk, or other PTSD-related literature. After reassessment of ~30% of these participants, we refined this set of markers from 343 to 28, based on their performance and ability to track changes in phenotype over time. The final diagnostic panel of 28 features was validated in an independent cohort (26 cases, 26 controls) with good performance (AUC = 0.80, 81% accuracy, 85% sensitivity, and 77% specificity). The identification and validation of this diverse diagnostic panel represents a powerful and novel approach to improve accuracy and reduce bias in diagnosing combat-related PTSD.

Large-scale characteristic mode analysis (CMA) poses challenges in computational electromagnetics as it calls for efficient solutions of large dense generalized eigenvalue problems. In this paper, we consider two applications that involve large-scale CMA, and demonstrate that fast multipole algorithms (FMAs) can be easily incorporated into the implicitly restarted Arnoldi method (IRAM) for eigenanalysis after simple modifications. The first application performs CMA for large platforms made by closed perfectly conducting surfaces. Multilevel FMA (MLFMA) is embedded into a combined field integral equation-based theory of characteristic mode (TCM). The second application addresses multiscale modeling of small but geometrically complicated objects, which possess fine subwavelength structures. An augmented electric field integral equation-based TCM is formulated, and low-frequency (LF-)FMA is adopted to accelerate the required matrix–vector products.

Recent progress on the theory of potential-based A-ϕ formulationin the integral form and its electromagnetic applications are summarized and presented here. By using Lorenz gauge and solving the vector and scalar potential formulations in tandem, the A-ϕ formulationac-curately captures the correct physics of both electrostatics and magnetostatics. The wide-band stable, dense-discretization breakdown free and structure-independent solver provides an alternative solution to various electromagnetic scattering and circuital problems. Also, the A-ϕformulationis applied to solve the characteristic modes at low frequencies.

Computational investigations on the BPE-ligated Cu-catalysed enantioselective addition of enynes to ketones were performed with DFT method. Two BPE-CuMes catalysts, BPE-CuMes and (S,S)-Ph-BPE–CuMes, were employed to probe the reaction mechanism with the emphasis on stereoselectivity. The calculations on the BPE-CuMes system indicate that the actvie metallized enyne intermediate acts as the catalyst for the catalytic cycle. The catalytic cycle involves two steps: 1) the ketone addition to the alkene moiety of the metallized enyne; 2) the metallization of enyne followed by the release of product with the recovery of the active metallized enyne intermediate. The first step accounts for the distribution of the products, and therefore is the stereo-controlling step in chiral systems. In the chiral (S,S)-Ph-BPE–CuMes system, the steric hindrance is vital for the distribution of products and responsible for the stereoselectivity of this reaction. The steric hindrance between the phenyl ring of the two substrates and groups at the chiral centers in the ligand skeleton is identified as the original of the stereoselectivity for the titled reaction.

A broadband fast multipole algorithm (FMA) is proposed using a hybridization of the plane wave and multipole expansions of the Green's function. By representing the low order harmonics using the plane wave expansion and representing the high order harmonics using the multipole expansion, the proposed method is accurate at all frequencies. The error analysis is performed to achieve arbitrarily high accuracies. The method can be regarded as a unification of the conventional dense and diagonal FMAs. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the method.

An improved model-order reduction scheme for scattering problems is introduced. An equivalent surface is introduced into the scattering problems to enclose the background scatterers. By performing random singular-value decomposition (RSVD) to the matrix expression of the interaction between equivalent surface and scatterers, a set of orthonormal vectors are obtained. The matrix representation of the interaction between radiator and scatterer is approximated by a number of the orthonormal vectors with certain truncation error. In addition, the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) is used to select the most important vectors which minimizes the truncation error. The scheme is suitable for simplifying the scattering problems, especially when the location of radiator changes frequently.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent the largest class of cell surface proteins and thus constitute an important family of therapeutic targets. Therefore, significant effort has been put towards the identification of novel ligands that can modulate the activity of a GPCR target with high efficacy and selectivity. However, due to limitations inherent to the most common techniques for GPCR ligand discovery, there is a pressing need for more efficient and effective ligand screening methods especially for the identification of potential allosteric modulators. Here we present a high-throughput, label-free and unbiased screening approach for the identification of small molecule ligands towards GPCR targets based on affinity mass spectrometry. This new approach features the usage of target-expressing cell membranes rather than purified proteins for ligand screening and allows the detection of both orthosteric and allosteric ligands targeting specific GPCRs. Screening a small compound library with this approach led to the rapid discovery of an antagonist for the 5-HT receptor and four positive allosteric modulators for GLP-1 receptor that were not previously reported. © 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Conventional electric field integral equation based theory is susceptible to the spurious internal resonance problem when the characteristic modes of closed perfectly conducting objects are computed iteratively. In this paper, we present a combined field integral equation based theory to remove the difficulty of internal resonances in characteristic mode analysis. The electric and magnetic field integral operators are shown to share a common set of non-trivial characteristic pairs (values and modes), leading to a generalized eigenvalue problem which is immune to the internal resonance corruption. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed formulation. This work may offer efficient solutions to characteristic mode analysis which involves electrically large closed surfaces.

In this paper, the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) with randomized method is implemented to solve the singularity of the MFIE matrix at low frequency. By removing the nullspace of MFIE operator, the nearzero singular values can be effectively avoided, thus reducing the condition number of the impedance matrix. Numerical results validate the feasibility of the method.

The performance of the A-Φ formulation for dielectric scatterers is compared to the Calderon formulation for lossy dielectric media at low frequencies. The scatterers under consideration are homogeneous and can be solved using surface integral equations and method of moments. Both Calderon and A-Φ require the use of dual basis functions to achieve accurate testing. Performance at optical frequencies are examined for lossy material.

This paper addresses the convergence of the electric-field integral equation (EFIE)-based matrix systems with the right-hand-side effect. The role of the right-hand-side excitation in determining the convergence rate of the iterative solvers is found to be important or even crucial at low frequencies. The weighted contributions from different singular vectors are decided by not only the corresponding singular values but also the right-hand side. Based on this understanding, we investigate the low-frequency stabilized form of both EFIE and Calderon multiplicative preconditioner EFIE (CMP-EFIE) on capacitive problems. For the parallel-plate capacitor excited by the delta-gap source, the singular vectors with small singular values cannot be excited, and the charge currents on the capacitive surface dominate. Thus, the stability of the EFIE-based system can be achieved at low frequencies. Detailed spectral analysis and convergent results are carried out in order to capture the physical nature of the problems.

A study of the right-hand side effect for an iterative solver is presented. The right-hand side determines whether a mode can be excited under certain excitation. Based on the matrix equation system Ā · x = b, different formulations are discussed including the electric field integral equation (EFIE), Calderon preconditioned EFIE with electro-quasi-static problems, and the magnetic integral equation (MFIE) with magneto-quasi-static problems. Detailed spectral analysis shows the importance of the weighted right-hand side effect in both the convergence and accuracy of iterative system.

A numerical full wave solver is proposed to solve conductor problems in electromagnetics. This method is an extension of the dielectric augmented electric field integral equation (D-AEFIE). Using this method, conductors, from lowly lossy to highly lossy, can be rigorously modeled to capture the conductive losses. Broadband stability can be achieved, thanks to the introduction of the augmentation technique. This paper demonstrates the formulation of this method. A simple and effective preconditioner is introduced to accelerate the convergence. A novel integration scheme is adopted to accurately capture the losses inside the conductor. Finally some numerical examples are shown to support the capability of this method to solve real-world circuit problems.

As fossil fuels reserves deplete rapidly and the low-carbon economy develops expeditiously, especially in China, natural gas as a clean and alternative energy is underway to help meet increased energy needs and climate needs. Therefore, accurate forecasts of natural gas production and consumption have been a necessary task for policy making in the coming years. This paper presents a review of natural gas forecasting models. The multicycle Hubbert model is employed to forecast China's annual nature gas production and to determine the peak production, the peak year and the future production trends based on several different URR scenarios. Moreover, a small-sample effective rolling GM(1,1) model is proposed for the first time to forecast exponential natural gas consumption with different lengths of data sets. Then, the grey relationship analysis is used to select the best consumption curve in correspond with different URR scenarios. The empirical result shows that the supply-demand gap will be larger and larger in the future, with a minimum gap of 22 bcm in 2011 and 225 bcm in 2050, with a maximum gap of 31 bcm in 2011 and 807 bcm in 2050, which indicates that the natural gas production in China cannot meet the rising consumption. Therefore, policy measures must be taken to ameliorate the situation, including expanding natural gas imports, increasing unconventional natural gas production, complementing the gap with other energy resources and combining energy saving with emission reduction. Accurate forecasting of natural gas production and consumption can provide the basis for decision making and help the government generate new significant policies.

Modern organizations invest a lot of resources in recruiting, managing, and retaining people with high value and talent. In spite of several studies over the past fifty years, there is no silver bullet for talent management, since the area itself is constantly evolving due to the ever-changing nature of the enterprise in the knowledge economy. In this paper, we adopt an analytics-based approach to advancing talent management, particularly from the point of view of employee commitment. An individual employee's commitment is quantified using her propensity to leave the company, which is modeled using historical employee records and other organization-specific data. Furthermore, factors behind this predicted level of commitment are also identified using data mining approaches. The predictive modeling is made robust and actionable by paying special attention to the accuracy of the propensity scores, their stability over time, and the inter-pretability of the factors. The propensity scores and identified factors are used to infer meaningful recommendations that are helpful to an employee's career apart from being consistent with the business objectives of the organization. We have incorporated all of this in a talent management tool which is an integrated platform for all stakeholders — employees, managers, top-line management and human resource professionals. This tool has been deployed in a large, global, Fortune 500 organization for about 100,000 employees. The results of the deployment are very promising with significant tangible monetary benefits, as well as possible intangible benefits such as improved awareness of the management on factors behind employee commitment, increased communication of employees with the management, and improved employee engagement.

In this paper, we propose a new integral equation method based on the formulations for vector potential A and scalar potential Φ. The new formulation, which is immune from low-frequency breakdown problem, is proposed for both electromagnetic scattering and circuit problems. Since both vector and scalar potentials are important for capturing the low-frequency physics, the contribution from scalar potential is solved in tandem with the vector potential equation in our new formulation. The numerical examples validate the effectiveness, stability and accuracy of the proposed formulation.

In this paper, we present a reduced-order memoryless state observer for networked control system with long delays in the control vectors. Then we use z-transform to deal with the long delays. By computing the residual between the output of the practical system and the output of the observer, we detect the fault of the networked system. An illustrative example shows the effectiveness of the approach.

In this paper, a wideband Butler matrix based on the 3-dB cross-slotted patch hybrid couplers and interdigital coupled-line section is presented. After loading a tight-coupled- line section at each port of the coupler, the operating bandwidth is enhanced with one more transmission pole. The Butler matrix is first designed and implemented at 2.65 GHz, with about 36% - 10dB return loss bandwidth. Amplitude imbalance of ±1dB achieves about 38% bandwidth, while the 45o± 2o phase difference bandwidth is around 29.6%. In addition, its Ku-band version operating at 12.5 GHz is also designed and well investigated.

The accumulation of T cells and monocytes at sites of ongoing inflammation represents the earliest step in the series of events that lead to granuloma formation in sarcoidosis. In this study, we evaluated the pulmonary production of IFN-inducible protein 10 (IP-10), a CXC chemokine that stimulates the directional migration of activated T cells. Striking levels of IP-10 were demonstrated in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid of 24 patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis and lymphocytic alveolitis, as compared with patients with inactive disease or control subjects. A positive correlation was demonstrated between IP-10 levels and the number of sarcoid CD45R0+/CD4+ cells in the BAL. Immunochemistry, performed with an anti-human IP-10 polyclonal Ab in lymph nodes displaying prominent sarcoid granulomas, showed that cells bearing IP-10 were mainly epithelioid cells and CD68+ macrophages located inside granulomatous areas. Macrophages recovered from the BAL of sarcoid patients stained positive for IP-10 protein. Furthermore, alveolar macrophages isolated from sarcoid patients with T cell alveolitis and cultured for 24 h in presence of IFN-γ secreted definite levels of IP-10 capable of inducing T cell chemiotaxis. Interestingly, alveolar lymphocytes recovered from patients with active sarcoidosis were CD4+ T cells expressing Th1 cytokines (IL-2 and IFN-γ) and high levels of CXCR3. Taken together, these data suggest the potential role of IP-10 in regulating the migration and activation of T cells toward sites of sarcoid inflammatory process and the consequent granuloma formation.

This paper reviews our recently developed fast and efficient algorithms for multiscale structure modeling. Low-frequency electromagnetic analysis becomes indispensable for multi-scale structures because of the involved minute length-scale compared to wavelength and mid length-scale on the order of wavelength or larger, where wave physics meets circuit physics. We are currently investigating stable low-frequency solutions in solving integral equations without the need for loop-tree decomposition, including the augmented EFIE, equivalence principle based algorithms, and perturbation-based Calderon multiplicative preconditioning methods.

In this paper, a simplified form of electric field integral equation with Calderon multiplicative preconditioner (CMP-EFIE) is presented for solving capacitive problems in the low-frequency regime. The decomposed three-term CMP-EFIE, though very stable, cannot capture the current accurately for a capacitor at low frequencies. By omitting the part of the hypersingular preconditioned term, the electric currents solved from the remaining two terms are of the right frequency order for a capacitor. Hence, the resultant two-term formulation can guarantee the accuracy of results for capacitive problems, and also makes the iterative system more stable at low frequencies. Both theoretical analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the practicality of the proposed method.

In this paper, a miniaturised Butler matrix using 3-dB cross-slotted patch hybrids is presented. By asymmetrically loading the inductive cross-slotted slots on four patches, compact patch hybrid couplers can be achieved. After properly installing two quarter-wavelength short-circuited stubs as phase shifters, the overall size of the resultant Butler matrix is largely reduced. In comparison with traditional patch hybrids with half-wavelength side-length, the side-length of proposed one can be shorter than quarter-wavelength. It means that the over all circuit area achieves an area reduction of about 56%, while the comparable performance is maintained, where the -10dB return loss bandwidth is more than 14%, ±0.7 dB amplitude balance bandwidth is more than 10%, and the 45 ° ± 5 ° phase difference bandwidth is around 14%. Finally, a prototype of proposed Butler matrix is fabricated and verified experimentally.

However, it suffers from increased artifacts in brain regions such as the medial temporal lobe (MTL), challenging functional imaging of the hippocampus with the objective of high-spatial resolution, which is particularly useful for this region both from a clinical and cognitive neuroscience perspective. We set out to compare a BOLD sequence at 7 T versus 3 T to visualize the MTL activity during an associative memory-encoding task. Twenty-eight healthy volunteers underwent a blocked-design fMRI at either 3 T or 7 T while performing a face-profession associative memory encoding task. Qualitative analyses of overall image quality revealed that functional images at 7 T were of high quality, showing a good white/gray matter contrast, with reasonably acceptable signal dropouts and artifacts at the lower portion of the temporal lobe. Analyses of task-related fMRI data revealed robust activations in the bilateral MTL during associative memory encoding at both field strengths. Notably, we observed significantly stronger memory-related hippocampal activation at 7 T than at 3 T, suggesting higher BOLD sensitivity at 7 T. These results are discussed in the light of the feasibility of 7 T scanning protocols for the MTL. 7 p.

In this paper, a wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on two spiral magnetic-coupled resonators is studied and realized on the printed circuit board (PCB). For the mid-range energy transfer, the microwave filter design theory can be employed to explain the basic principle of magnetic induction in WPT system. Based on the filtering transfer function, the power transfer efficiency is defined by Scattering matrix. In particular, the transfer distance between two resonators can be easily optimized according to the filtering specifications. As an example, Chebyshev function is selected to synthesize the two-pole transmission peaks, which is so-called frequency splitting in power community. Then, the transfer distances can be determined from the required external Q-factor and coupling coefficient. Finally, a PCB-based WPT system fed by two loops is designed, implemented, and verified experimentally.

This paper addresses the low-frequency problems for open capacitive problems in the electric field integral equation using Calderon multiplicative preconditioner (CMP-EFIE). At low frequencies, the CMP-EFIE fails to extract accurate high-order current for a capacitor problem. By representing the electric current at different frequency orders as a power series, we successfully apply the perturbation method on the CMP-EFIE for capacitive structures with open surfaces. Numerical results show that the highly accurate current for a capacitor can be obtained with fast convergence at extremely low frequencies.

The energy injection model is usually proposed to interpret the shallow-decay phase in Swift GRB X-ray afterglows. However, very few GRBs have simultaneous signatures of energy injection in their optical and X-ray afterglows. Here, we report optical observations of GRB 090529A from 2000 sec to $\sim10^6$ sec after the burst, in which an achromatic decay is seen at both wavelengths. The optical light curve shows a decay from 0.37 to 0.99 with a break at $\sim10^5$ sec. In the same time interval, the decay indices of the X-ray light curve changed from 0.04 to 1.2. Comparing these values with the closure relations, the segment after 3$\times10^{4}$ sec is consistent with the prediction of the forward shock in an ISM medium without any energy injection. The shallow-decay phase between 2000 to 3$\times10^{4}$ sec could be due to the external shock in a wind-type-like medium with an energy injection under the condition of $��_o < ��_c < ��_x$. However, the constraint of the spectral region is not well consistent with the multi-band observations.
