Under the U.S. High Luminosity LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (HL-LHC AUP), the 150 mm bore, high-field Nb3Sn low-\b{eta} MQXFA quadrupole magnets are being fabricated, assembled and tested, in the context of the CERN Hi-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade. These magnets have 4.2 m magnetic length and 4.56 m long iron yoke. To date, eight MQXFA magnets have been tested. One of the magnets additionally underwent a successful endurance test with 40 triggered quenches, and two magnets did not perform as expected. This work summarizes for the first time the available strain gauge data from eight identical Nb3Sn MQXFA tested magnets, focusing on the endurance test, and on a possible cause of underperformance of the two magnets that did not pass the vertical test. We applied methods to prevent this from happening in future MQXFA magnets, which shown to be effective for last two tested magnets.

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation., 270 pages, 58 figures. Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) measured the cooling of a muon beam traversing a liquid hydrogen or lithium hydride (LiH) energy absorber as part of a programme to develop muon accelerator facilities, such as a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider. The energy loss and MCS that occur in the absorber material are competing effects that alter the performance of the cooling channel. Therefore measurements of MCS are required in order to validate the simulations used to predict the cooling performance in future accelerator facilities. We report measurements made in the MICE apparatus of MCS using a LiH absorber and muons within the momentum range 160 to 245 MeV/c. The measured RMS scattering width is about 9% smaller than that predicted by the approximate formula proposed by the Particle Data Group. Data at 172, 200 and 240 MeV/c are compared to the GEANT4 (v9.6) default scattering model. These measurements show agreement with this more recent GEANT4 (v9.6) version over the range of incident muon momenta., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, journal

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) will require large aperture quadrupole magnets for the Hadron beam in the insertion region. Key requirements include high field, compact size, and tight control of the fringe fields. A 120 mm aperture, 308.4 mm outer diameter actively shielded Nb3Sn quadrupole model is under development to support these goals. This work is being carried out by a collaboration of BNL, JLAB and LBNL. A compact shell-based structure preloaded with a bladder and key system was developed for this project. In this paper, the effect of the compact structure on the mechanical behavior was investigated. In particular, the impact of the assembly tolerances and coil size variations on the actual coil stresses and bladder pressures was computed and compared with results from larger bladder and key structures developed for the LHC IR. The longitudinal preload is provided by stainless steel rods. Differently from other bladder and key magnets, the rods are first preloaded axially before coil axial load is applied. This new design aims to increase the overall stiffness of the system and reduce the longitudinal coil displacement during powering. Based on the results of a 3D mechanical analysis, the preliminary pre-load targets for the EIC quadrupole assembly will be reviewed and discussed.

Numerous experiments have shown that the loads applied to Nb3Sn strands and cables can reduce their critical current. Experiments, performed on uniaxially loaded strands, allowed to define clear laws to describe the evolution of the critical surface as a function of the applied current, field, temperature and strain. It is, however, still unclear how these laws can be applied to superconducting magnets. The present paper proposes a methodology to estimate the critical current and temperature margin reduction on superconducting magnets due to stress on the superconducting material. The methodology is tested on the MQXF magnets, a quadrupole developed for the High Luminosity LHC project, and successfully validated by comparing computed strain with data from strain gauge measurements. Results suggested that, because of the stresses arising in winding during assembly, cool-down and powering, the current limit of the magnet is lower than the expected short sample limit, and that the most critical region does not coincide with the peak field location.

The Nb3Sn quadrupole MQXF is being developed as a part of the large hadron collide (LHC) High Luminosity upgrade. The magnet design was tested on 1.5-m-long short models, sharing the same cross section with the full-length magnets. Various azimuthal and longitudinal preloads were applied, studying the impact on the magnet training and on its mechanical performances. The experiments demonstrated the possibility to control the magnet prestress. However, various factors, coil size among the others, may affect the stress variation between and within each winding. This variation could prevent the magnets from reaching the magnet performances, as for example as a result of the critical current reduction of the Nb3Sn strands. This paper analyzes the mechanical performances of the short models, studying in particular the stress variation on different coils. The measured coil size was used as input in the numerical simulations, and the results were then compared with the strain gauge measurements. Finally, the short model experience was used to evaluate the feasibility of a loading operation that does not rely on the strain measurements.

Accelerator magnets made with Nb3Sn superconducting coils are currently the most viable candidate technology for increasing the luminosity and energy of particle accelerators like the LHC. Today, the most developed Nb3Sn wire technology is the restacked rod process (RRP) wire manufactured by Bruker. RRP wires normally undergo a reaction heat treatment after coil winding which consists of three stages, one at 210 °C, one at 400 °C, and one at ∼660 °C spending roughly 48 h at each stage. The last stage of this heat treatment activates the solid-state diffusion which forms the Nb3Sn, whereas the first two stages have been historically used to 'mix' the Cu and Sn in order to avoid liquefaction of the low melting temperature phases. Recently, the second stage was studied and optimized to improve critical current density in RRP wires by controlling the kinetics triggered when the Cu-Nb-Sn ternary phase ('Nausite') forms; the first stage however, has a negligible impact on the critical current density of RRP wires, and instead focuses on reducing the probability of Sn leaking from the wires. These instances of Sn leaks are often referred to as 'Sn bursts.' In this paper, we explore Sn bursting on Rutherford cables made with RRP wires in an attempt to better understand the threat of Sn bursts for future accelerator magnets using modern RRP wires. It was found that the Sn burst prevention mechanism, facilitated by the 210 °C stage, can be achieved in a fraction of the time, and that the modern RRP wires are less likely to observe Sn bursting. This new knowledge has enabled us to further understand and optimize the heat treatment of RRP wires for future accelerator magnets.

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) Project has entered the phase of beam commissioning starting from the room-temperature front end and the superconducting linac segment of first 15 cryomodules. With the newly commissioned helium refrigeration system supplying 4.5K liquid helium to the quarter-wave resonators and solenoids, the FRIB accelerator team achieved the sectional key performance parameters as designed ahead of schedule accelerating heavy ion beams above 20MeV/u energy. Thus, FRIB accelerator becomes world's highest-energy heavy ion linear accelerator. We also validated machine protection and personnel protection systems that will be crucial to the next phase of commissioning. FRIB is on track towards a national user facility at the power frontier with a beam power two orders of magnitude higher than operating heavy-ion facilities. This paper summarizes the status of accelerator design, technology development, construction, commissioning as well as path to operations and upgrades.

The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to cool the muon beam at a future neutrino factory or muon collider. The emittance is measured from an ensemble of muons assembled from those that pass through the experiment. A pure muon ensemble is selected using a particle-identification system that can reject efficiently both pions and electrons. The position and momentum of each muon are measured using a high-precision scintillating-fibre tracker in a 4T solenoidal magnetic field. This paper presents the techniques used to reconstruct the phase-space distributions in the upstream tracking detector and reports the first particle-by-particle measurement of the emittance of the MICE Muon Beam as a function of muon-beam momentum.

The Nb 3 Sn low-β quadrupole MQXF is being developed as a part of the High-Luminosity large hadron collider (LHC) upgrade project. The magnet will be produced in two different configurations, sharing the same cross section but with different lengths. A 7.2-m mechanical model of MQXFB was recently assembled at european organization for nuclear research (CERN) with one copper coil, two low-grade coils, and one rejected coil. Coil dimensions were measured with a portable coordinate measurement machine. The coil pack shimming was designed in order to optimize the field quality and the contacts between the coils and the collars. The azimuthal preload target was defined using the short models experience. The mechanical behavior during loading was monitored by means of strain gauges. The results demonstrated that the structure can provide the required prestress to the coils.

Muon beams of low emittance provide the basis for the intense, well-characterized neutrino beams necessary to elucidate the physics of flavor at a neutrino factory and to provide lepton-antilepton collisions at energies of up to several TeV at a muon collider. The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) aims to demonstrate ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to reduce the phase-space volume occupied by the muon beam at such facilities. In an ionization-cooling channel, the muon beam passes through a material in which it loses energy. The energy lost is then replaced using rf cavities. The combined effect of energy loss and reacceleration is to reduce the transverse emittance of the beam (transverse cooling). A major revision of the scope of the project was carried out over the summer of 2014. The revised experiment can deliver a demonstration of ionization cooling. The design of the cooling demonstration experiment will be described together with its predicted cooling performance. As part of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Project, a set of Nb3Snquadrupoles are being developed, aiming to enhance the performance of the inner triplets. The new magnets, identified as MQXFA and MQXFB, will share the same cross section with two different lengths, 4.2 and 7.2 m, respectively. During the magnet development, three short models were tested, along with a number of mechanical models, demonstrating the capability of the magnet cross section to achieve the specified performances. The same performances are now required for the full-length magnets. To ensure this, the authors studied the impact of the magnet length on the capability of the structure to provide an adequate support to the coils. Finite element and simplified analytical models were used to evaluate the impact of the magnet length on the stresses in the magnet ends and coil elongation during powering. The models were calibrated using the results from the short model tests, and used to provide an indication on the required prestress and its foreseen impact on the magnet performance.

During the development of MQXF, the new Nb3Sn quadrupole to be used in the large hadron collider (LHC) inner triplets for the High Luminosity upgrade, three short models were tested: MQXFS1, MQXFS3, and MQXFS5. These models differ in the use of thin or thick laminations for the iron components, in the coil design, and in the superconductive strands, rod restack process (RRP) or powder in tube (PIT). In the MQXF design, the azimuthal prestress is provided at room temperature by means of the bladder-key technology, and it is further increased during the cooldown by the differential thermal contraction of the various components. Four aluminum rods provide the longitudinal prestress. Both systems allow for a flexible control of the amount of prestress applied. As a consequence, it was possible to test the models exploring different azimuthal and longitudinal prestress conditions, in an attempt to understand their impact on the magnet performances. This paper studies the mechanical behavior of these short models, also providing the strain and stresses measured by means of strain gauges installed on the aluminum shell, on the winding poles and on the rods. Finally, the paper compares the measures with the results from finite element (FE) models.

This report presents the fabrication and QC data of MQXFS1, the first short model of the low-beta quadrupoles (MQXF) for the LHC High Luminosity Upgrade. It describes the conductor, the coils, and the structure that make the MQXFS1 magnet. Qualification tests and non-conformities are also presented and discussed. The fabrication of MQXFS1 was started before the finalization of conductor and coil design for MQXF magnets. Two strand design were used (RRP 108/127 and RRP 132/169). Cable and coil cross-sections were “first generation”.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has been engaged in an internal laboratory directed research and development project to define a suitable accelerator physics lattice to support the diffraction limited upgrade of the Advanced Light Source (ALS). [1] Diffraction limited lattices require strong focusing elements throughout. Magnetics design is challenging in that the high gradient magnetic structures are required to operate in close proximity. Lattice development requires a coordinated engineering design effort to ensure the lattice design feasibility. We will present a review of the results of our magnet scoping studies as well as conceptual design specifications for the ALS-U lattice dipole, quadrupole, and sextupole magnet systems.

The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment aims to demonstrate the transverse cooling of a muon beam by ionization interaction with absorbers and re-acceleration in RF cavities. The final MICE cooling channel configuration has two RF modules, each housing a 201 MHz RF cavity to compensate the longitudinal energy loss in the absorbers. The RF modules will be assembled and tested at LBNL before being shipped to and installed at RAL. This paper reports the recent progress on the manufacturing and testing of the RF module components, as well as the preparation for the final module assembly.

A multilayer high field dipole magnet has been designed for future particle accelerators. The magnet has eight layers of a Nb3Sn outsert coil and four layers of a Bi-2212 insert coil (see Figs. 1 and 2). The layers are graded, delivering a short-sample field of 17.7 T in a 40-mm bore. The coil layers are of a canted cosine-theta design - with ribs and spars that guide and support the coil windings, shape the field, intercept Lorentz forces, and minimize conductor prestress. We present a general overview of the concept and report on the magnetic and mechanical design including an initial cost estimate and construction plan.

The US LARP collaboration has been pursuing the development of Nb3Sn technology for the interaction region low-beta quadrupole magnets for the future LHC luminosity upgrade. A key component for safe operation of these high-field magnets is the quench protection system. Due to the high stored energy density and the low stabilizer fraction in the conductor, quench propagation in the windings needs to be accelerated to limit the hot spot temperature and coil internal voltages during a quench. For this purpose, quench protection heaters are used to introduce multiple quenches across the windings. Heater delay, i.e. the time delay between heater activation and normal zone initiation under the heater, is a critical design parameter. We present an analysis of the heater delays characteristics for Nb3Sn coil windings based on our recently developed Code for Heater Delay Analysis (CoHDA), and compare with experimental results for various operational currents and temperatures in the LARP HQ and LQ magnets. We demonstrate applicability of our simulation model for heater design optimization of the LHC type low-beta quadrupole coils.

Computational heater delays are compared with experimental data from the U.S. Large Hadron Collider Accelerator Research Program Nb3S High-Gradient Quadrupole magnet with good agreement. The Canted-Cosine-Theta (CCT) magnet design offer significant reductions in conductor stress by using mandrels t prevent the accumulation of operating Lorentz forces. Each mandre consists of a cylindrical spar with ribs guiding the conductor These ribs intercept the turn-To-Turn accumulation of forces b transferring them to the spar. Design studies of a layered CC coil pack coupled to a shell-based structure are shown. The us of a 3-D periodic symmetry region to reduce the problem size fo finite element modeling is detailed along with a discussion of axia boundary conditions. ANSYS calculation results for a two laye NbTi dipole being constructed at LBNL (CCT1) are presented ANSYS calculations show the Lorentz force induced stress i CCT1 at the single turn level, demonstrating interception an suggesting investigation of CCT design with minimal structur external to the coil pack.

Canted-Cosine-Theta (CCT) magnet is an accelerator magnet that superposes fields of nested and tilted solenoids that are oppositely canted. The current distribution of any canted layer generates a pure harmonic field as well as a solenoid field that can be cancelled with a similar but oppositely canted layer. The concept places windings within mandrel's ribs and spars that simultaneously intercept and guide Lorentz forces of each turn to prevent stress accumulation. With respect to other designs, the need for pre-stress in this concept is reduced by an order of magnitude making it highly compatible with the use of strain sensitive superconductors such as Nb3Sn or HTS. Intercepting large Lorentz forces is of particular interest in magnets with large bores and high field accelerator magnets like the one foreseen in the future high energy upgrade of the LHC. This paper describes the CCT concept and reports on the construction of CCT1 a "proof of principle" dipole.

Undulators serve as the primary source of radiation for modern storage rings, and more recently for the advent of Free-Electron Lasers (FELs). The performance of future FELs can be greatly enhanced using the much higher magnetic fields of superconducting undulators (SCU) [1]. For example, the LCLS-II hard x-ray undulator can be shortened by up to 70 m using an SCU in place of a PMU (permanent magnet undulator), or its spectral performance can be critically improved when using a similar length. In addition, SCUs are expected to be orders of magnitude less sensitive to radiation dose; a major issue at LCLS-II with its 1-MHz electron bunch rate. We present a funded R&D collaboration between SLAC, ANL, and LBNL, which aims to demonstrate the viability of superconducting undulators for FELs by building, testing, measuring, and tuning two 1.5-m long planar SCU prototypes using two different technologies: NbTi at ANL and Nb3Sn at LBNL. Our goal is to review and reassess the LCLS-II HXR baseline plans (PMU) in July of 2015, after the development and evaluation of both prototypes, possibly in favor of an SCU for LCLS-II.

The Superconducting Magnet Group, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), has been developing a canted cosine-theta (CCT) superconducting dipole coil as well as the coil's supporting magnet structure. This contribution reports on the progress in the development of the coil's winding mandrel and its fabrication options. A comprehensive study of the coil's Lorentz forces was performed to validate the winding mandrel's "stress interception" attributes. The design of the external structure and the application of the "Bladder & Key" technology is also discussed. Additionally, the application of these studies to a curved ion-therapy CCT dipole magnet is reported.

We report test results for the one meter long dipol HD3b, a block-Type accelerator quality Nb3Sn magnet built a LBNL with operational bore fields in the range of 13-15 T. Th magnet is an upgrade of the previously reported HD2 and HD3 versions, with several modifications implemented to improve conducto positioning, reduce cable "hard-way" bending radius, an strengthen electrical insulation between cables and coil parts The magnet exhibited long training behavior, but showed a goo "memory" of the trained state upon thermal cycling. Ramp-rat dependence of the quench current, field quality performance characteristics and protection heater studies were conducted. Quenc propagation velocity and quench locations were determined base on the voltage signals; quench localization was further improve using inductive quench antenna and acoustic emission sensors Short-And long-Term acoustic precursors to quenching wer observed.

As part of the development of very high field dipole magnets for particle accelerators, the Superconducting Magnet Program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is developing block-type dipole magnets. One of the main challenges of this geometry is to provide support to the coil in the aperture while maintaining an adequate clear bore. Through finite element method analysis, strain-gauge measurements, and test results, this paper reviews the design of HD3, a 1-m-long, 43-mm-bore Nb3Sn dipole magnet, presents the findings in terms of strain gauges monitoring, and summarizes their implications. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

The size and weight of ion-beam cancer therapy gantries are frequently determined by a large aperture, curved, ninety degree, dipole magnet. The higher fields achievable with superconducting technology promise to greatly reduce the size and weight of this magnet and therefore also the gantry as a whole. This paper reports advances in the design of winding mandrels for curved, canted cosine-theta (CCT) magnets in the context of a preliminary magnet design for a proton gantry. The winding mandrel is integral to the CCT design and significantly affects the construction cost, stress management, winding feasibility, eddy current power losses, and field quality of the magnet. A laminated mandrel design using a minimum symmetry in the winding path is introduced and its feasibility demonstrated by a rapid prototype model. Piecewise construction of the mandrel using this laminated approach allows for increased manufacturing techniques and material choices. Sectioning the mandrel also reduces eddy currents produced during field changes accommodating the scan of beam energies during treatment. This symmetry concept can also greatly reduce the computational resources needed for 3D finite element calculations. It is shown that the small region of symmetry forming the laminations combined with periodic boundary conditions can model the entire magnet geometry disregarding the ends. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

For the last several years, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has been engaged in the development of Nb3Sn block-type accelerator quality dipoles with operational bore fields in the range of 13-15 T. The magnet design features two coil modules wound around a titanium-alloy pole with a clear aperture of 43 mm. The latest model, HD3, incorporates several new features to overcome the limitations observed in previous tests. Among the key objectives are improved conductor positioning at critical transitions between straight section and end regions, and a more robust fabrication process. To date, several coils have been fabricated and we describe their performance with respect to these design and process changes. Additionally, we present our experience in design and fabrication of a new generation of magnet coils that introduce a two-piece pole design that allows for cable growth during reaction. These experiences are intended to form the basis for scale-up to longer lengths and larger aperture magnets. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

The pulsed wire technique is an attractive option for the measurement of undulators where the measurement access is restricted due to, for example, narrow undulator gaps or cryogenic environments in the case of superconducting undulators. Using the pulsed wire technique, direct measurements of the first and second integrals of the magnetic field can be obtained. However, one of the main limitations of this technique is the error introduced by dispersive wave motion, due to the finite flexural rigidity of the wire. For the measurement of the first integral of the magnetic field, an error is also introduced by the use of a current pulse with finite pulse width. In this paper, a general solution is presented for dispersive wave motion in pulsed wire measurements. A method for the measurement of the dispersive wave speed is presented and demonstrated through experimental examples. An algorithm is derived which corrects the dispersion and finite pulse-width errors in the measurement of first magnetic field integrals and the dispersion error in the measurement of second magnetic field integrals. The effectiveness of the correction algorithms is demonstrated through experimental measurements, and the results are compared with Hall probe measurements on a short undulator. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

With the first test of LQS03, the long quadrupole (LQ) R&D by LARP (the US LHC Accelerator Research Program, a collaboration of BNL, FNAL, LBNL, and SLAC) is approaching conclusion. LQS03 is the third 3.7-m-long quadrupole, with 90 mm aperture, using a full new set of Nb3Sn coils. The LQS03 coils were made using 108/127 RRP strand (with 108 Nb3Sn subelements) produced by Oxford Superconducting Technology, whereas both previous models used 54/61 RRP strand (with 54 larger Nb3Sn subelements). In this paper, LQS03 test results are presented and discussed. The test results are also compared with the performances of the previous models. Observations are made for the future use of Nb3Sn in accelerator magnets. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

After the successful test of the first long Nb 3Sn quadrupole (LQS01) the US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP, a collaboration of BNL, FNAL, LBNL and SLAC) is assessing training memory, reproducibility, and other accelerator quality features of long Nb 3Sn quadrupole magnets. LQS01b (a reassembly of LQS01 with more uniform and higher pre-stress) was subjected to a full thermal cycle and reached the previous plateau of 222 T/m at 4.5 K in two quenches. A new set of four coils, made of the same type of conductor used in LQS01 (RRP 54/61 by Oxford Superconducting Technology), was assembled in the LQS01 structure and tested at 4.5 K and lower temperatures. The new magnet (LQS02) reached the target gradient (200 T/m) only at 2.6 K and lower temperatures, at intermediate ramp rates. The preliminary test analysis, here reported, showed a higher instability in the limiting coil than in the other coils of LQS01 and LQS02. © 2011 IEEE.

The development of undulator technologies capable of generating sub-cm undulator periods is assuming an increasing importance in X-ray free electron laser (FEL) applications. Indeed, such devices jointly with the high brightness electron beams already demonstrated at operating facilities would allow for lower energy, more compact electron linacs with a beneficial impact on the size and cost of X-ray FEL facilities. A novel design super-conducting undulator is being developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) with the potential of sub-cm periods with reasonably large undulator parameter and gap. The potential and capability of such undulator technology need to be experimentally demonstrated. In this paper, the possibility of constructing an infrared FEL by combining the new undulator with the high brightness beam from the APEX injector facility at LBNL is investigated. Calculations show that the resulting FEL, when operated in self-amplified-spontaneous-emission mode, is expected to deliver a saturated power of almost a MW within a ∼4m undulator length, in a single-spike of coherent radiation at ∼2μm wavelength. It will be also shown that the small-period of the undulator associated with the relatively low energy of the APEX beam, forces the FEL to operate in a regime with unusual and interesting characteristics. The alternative option of laser seeding the FEL is also briefly examined, showing the potential to reduce the saturation length even further. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

We report on the possibility of constructing an infrared FEL by combining a novel design super-conducting undu-lator developed at LBNL with the high brightness beam from the APEX injector facility. Calculations show that the resulting FEL is expected to deliver a saturated power of over a MW within a ∼4 m undulator length when operating in Self-Amplified-Spontaneus-Emission mode, with a single-spike of coherent radiation at ∼ 2 μm wavelength. The sub-cm undulator periods, associated with the relatively low energy of the APEX beam (20-25 MeV), forces the FEL to operate in a regime with unusual and interesting characteristics. The alternative option of laser seeding the FEL is also briefly examined, showing the potential to reduce the saturation length even further.

In this paper we describe the technical design of an ongoing proof-of-principle echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) experiment at the Next Linear Collider Test Accelerator (NLCTA) at SLAC. We present the design considerations and the technical details of the experiment.

The concepts and technical challenges related to developing a fourth generation electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source with a rf frequency greater than 40 GHz and magnetic confinement fields greater than twice B(ECR) will be explored in this article. Based on the semiempirical frequency scaling of ECR plasma density with the square of operating frequency, there should be significant gains in performance over current third generation ECR ion sources, which operate at rf frequencies between 20 and 30 GHz. While the third generation ECR ion sources use NbTi superconducting solenoid and sextupole coils, the new sources will need to use different superconducting materials, such as Nb(3)Sn, to reach the required magnetic confinement, which scales linearly with rf frequency. Additional technical challenges include increased bremsstrahlung production, which may increase faster than the plasma density, bremsstrahlung heating of the cold mass, and the availability of high power continuous wave microwave sources at these frequencies. With each generation of ECR ion sources, there are new challenges to be mastered, but the potential for higher performance and reduced cost of the associated accelerator continues to make this a promising avenue for development.

Elliptically Polarizing Undulators [1] that provide full photon polarization control also have fast, intrinsic transverse roll-off of the magnetic field. The roll-off is especially fast for vertical polarization settings, and can have big detrimental effects on the nonlinear single particle dynamics. Particularly low and medium energy light sources and long period EPUs are prone to those effects. The three existing 50 mm period EPUs at the ALS have been retrofitted with shims to correct for these dynamic multipole effects and a new 90 mm period device which otherwise would have caused a huge reduction in dynamic aperture has been shimmed before installation. Beam dynamics measurements on all devices show that the shimming works very well and user operation with the long period EPU has begun.

CHATS-AS workshop has been organized to discuss applied superconductivity at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Berkeley, USA, on September 5-7, 2006. The workshop provided an ongoing opportunity to discuss and advance the science of simulations and modeling specifically applied to superconducting magnets. CHATS-AS 2006 has contributed to the development and refinement of models used to study the stability of superconductors, simulate quench propagation, and perform structural analysis of superconducting magnets. A number of presentations provided significant advances in measuring and modeling current sharing and contact resistances between superconducting strands in CHATS-AS workshops. The workshop included both LTS and HTS applications, extending the LTS experience in modeling superconducting devices to the realm of HTS applications.

The Advanced Light Source is currently being upgraded for top-off operation. This major facility upgrade will provide an improvement in brightness from soft x-ray undulators of about one order of magnitude and keep the ALS competitive with the newest intermediate energy light sources. Major components of the upgrade include making the booster synchrotron capable of full energy operation, radiation safety studies, improvements to interlocks and collimation systems, diagnostics upgrades as well as emittance improvements in the main storage ring. Most hardware necessary as part of the upgrade has been installed and commissioned. The radiation safety studies are making good progress and have passed a first outside peer review succesfully. ©2007 IEEE.

An ultra-high resolution beamline is being constructed at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) for the study of low energy excitations in strongly correlated systems with the use of high-resolution inelastic scattering and angle-resolved photoemission. This new beamline, given the acronym Merlin (for meV resolution line), will cover the energy range 10-150 eV. The monochromator has fixed entrance and exit slits and a plane mirror that can illuminate a spherical grating at the required angle of incidence (as in the SX-700 mechanism). The monochromator can be operated in two different modes. In the highest resolution mode, the energy scanning requires translating the monochromator chamber (total travel 1.1 m) as well as rotating the grating and the plane mirror in front of the grating. The resolution in this mode is practically determined by the slits width. In the second mode, the scanning requires rotating the grating and the plane mirror. This mode can be used to scan a few eV without a significant resolution loss. The source for the beamline is a 1.9 m long, 90 mm period quasi periodic EPU. The expected flux at the sample is higher than 1011 photons/s at a resolving power of 5 × 104 in the energy range 16-130 eV. A second set of gratings can be used to obtain higher flux at the expense of resolution. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Elliptically Polarizing Undulators (EPUs) have become more and more popular at synchrotron radiation sources, providing full polarization control of the photon beam. The fields of the most commonly used APPLE-II type EPUs have a very fast, intrinsic field roll-off, creating significant non-linearities of the beam motion with in some cases large impact on the dynamic (momentum) aperture. In general, the nonlinear effects get stronger with longer periods and higher undulator magnetic fields. One of the planned future beamlines at the ALS (MERLIN) will use a quasiperiodic EPU with 9 cm period and maximum B fields of about 1.3 T. We will present simulation studies for the proposed shimming schemes for this future device to reduce the nonlinear effects to acceptable values, as well as experimental studies for the existing 5 cm period EPUs already installed in the ALS.

Stray field from an eddy current septum magnet adversely affects the circulating beam and can be reduced using several techniques. The stray field time history typically has a fast rise section followed by a long exponential decay section when pulsed with a half sine drive current. Changing the drive current pulse to a full sine has the effect of both reducing peak stray field magnitude by ∼ 3x and producing a quick decay from this peak to a lower field level which then has a similar long decay time constant as that from the half sine drive current pulse. A method for tuning the second half-sine (reverse) current pulse to eliminate the long exponential decay section is given. A method for halving the remaining brief peak is also given. © 2005 IEEE.

The design of a class of short period superconducting undulators is presented. We begin with a parameter-based analysis that provides insight into potential device performance as a function of the properties of superconducting materials. We present data on candidate low-temperature superconducting materials and the motivation to consider low-copper fraction, high Jc materials. Measured data on recent Nb3Sn conductors is provided, together with wire and cable design issues that are tailored for undulator applications. Key design concerns are then addressed, in particular the quench protection system limitations and the system performance. Progress on the construction and testing of a prototype 30mm period device is described.

A commercial Finite-Element-Analysis program, ANSYS®, is widely used in structural and thermal analysis. With the program's ability to include nonlinear material properties and import complex CAD files, one can generate coil geometries and simulate quench propagation in superconducting magnets. A "proof-of-principle" finite element model was developed assuming a resistivity that increases linearly from zero to its normal value at a temperature consistent with the assumed B magnetic field. More sophisticated models could easily include finer-grained coil, cable, structural, and circuit details. A quench is provoked by raising the temperature of an arbitrary superconducting element above its Tc. The time response to this perturbation is calculated using small time-steps to allow convergence between steps. Snapshots of the temperature and voltage distributions allow examination of longitudinal and turn-to-turn quench propagation, quench-front annihilation, and cryo-stability. Modeling details are discussed, and a computed voltage history was compared with measurements from a recent magnet test.

The fabrication and installation at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of a high-brightness high-repetition rate photo-gun, based on a normal conducting 187 MHz (VHF) RF cavity operating in CW mode, is in an advanced phase. The cavity will generate an electric field at the cathode plane of ∼ 20 MV/m to accelerate the electron bunches up to ∼ 750 keV, with peak current, energy spread and transverse emittance suitable for FEL and ERL applications. The gun vacuum system has been designed for achieving pressures compatible with the use of "delicate" high quantum efficiency semiconductor cathodes to generate up to a nC bunches at MHz repetition rate with present laser technology. Several photo-cathode/laser systems are under consideration, and in particular photo-cathodes based on K2CsSb are being developed for the gun and have already achieved a QE of 8% at 532 nm wavelength, or close to 20% including the Schottky barrier lowering. The cathode will be operated by a μJ fiber laser in conjunction with refractive transverse beam shaping to create a flat top transverse profile, as well as a birefringent pulse stacker to create a flat top temporal profile. The present status and the plan for future activities are presented.
