Taking as starting point the contemporary educational disruptions due to pandemic outbreaks and similar social or natural disasters, this lemma is focusing on one of the most energetic protagonists of the emerging agenda for providing undisrupted learning via remote instruction. Interactive Educational TV takes also advantage of favorable technological advances that vastly increase network infrastructures globally and deploys learning tools originating from establishments offering immense learning resources to their users, like special education. The latter, being connected with medical treatment as well, provides insight on how affectionate teaching and learning methods should be deployed. Even further, the bonds established by governmental institutions, enterprises, and schools for the provision of such services are promulgated as the effective center for the delivery of educative multimedia.

The glymphatic system is responsible for the clearance of the potentially harmful metabolic waste of the central nervous system. The prevalent theory is that the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates in the perivascular space (PVS) and through the astrocytes’ aquaporin-4 channels (AQ-4), and it is then drained by the lymphatic vessels after mixing with interstitial fluid (ISF). However, there is little evidence supporting this hypothesis. A deeper understanding of the physiology of the glymphatic system could transform the way we understand neuropathology and our approach to treating neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this review, we introduce a new conceptual framework for the functionality of the glymphatic system, offering new directions for future research. We propose that CSF and ISF exchange flow depends on arterial pulsation, respiration, posture, and sleep. PVS changes due to disrupted cerebral autoregulation, alternations of intrathoracic pressure, venous flow, and body position can also influence the glymphatic flow. The role of respiration remains controversial due to the variety of parameters that interfere with glymphatic functionality. Slow-wave sleep is important for glymphatic clearance due to neuronal electromagnetic synchronization and expansion of the interstitial space. Therefore, sleep and vascular disorders, as well as aging, may hinder glymphatic flow and induce a noxious milieu of susceptibility to neurodegenerative disorders because of metabolic waste accumulation. We lastly introduce a new idea postulating that electromagnetic induction may constitute one of the propelling forces for the convectional current and mixing of CSF and ISF.

Collaboration between academia and society has become a key priority for many higher education institutions (HEIs). In Sweden, this is partly driven by political calls to secure the long-term provision of knowledge, innovation and competitiveness. At the system and institutional level, responses to this are reflected in governance structures and strategic documents. However, those strategic responses often fall short and attempts to organise for collaboration are often met with scepticism, and, in practice, micro-level changes are slow. This paper asks why that is the case by reflecting on the experiences gained from initiating and anchoring a course on societal collaboration at a Swedish HEI. We analyse the experiences from this bottom-up initiative by building on the notion of reflexivity. Our study contributes to research on managing and organising collaboration at HEIs by highlighting and illustrating the need to adopt a scientific approach – to use scientific knowledge – and engage (more) in reflexivity when organising to ensure societal collaboration. Efforts to produce collaboration cannot be expected to be solved by ‘someother’, but require strategy to be aligned with practice. We conclude our reflexive inquiry with implications for research and practice.

High-dimensional linear models with independent errors have been well-studied. However, statistical inference on a high-dimensional linear model with heteroskedastic, dependent (and possibly nonstationary) errors is still a novel topic. Under such complex assumptions, the paper at hand introduces a debiased and thresholded ridge regression estimator that is consistent, and is able to recover the model sparsity. Moreover, we derive a Gaussian approximation theorem for the estimator, and apply a dependent wild bootstrap algorithm to construct simultaneous confidence interval and hypothesis tests for linear combinations of parameters. Numerical experiments with both real and simulated data show that the proposed estimator has good finite sample performance. Of independent interest is the development of a new class of heteroscedastic, (weakly) dependent, and nonstationary random variables that can be used as a general model for regression errors.

Integral membrane proteins (IMPs) perform a range of diverse functions and their dysfunction underlies numerous pathological conditions. Consequently, IMPs constitute most drug targets, and the elucidation of their mechanism of action has become an intense field of research. Historically, IMP studies have relied on their extraction from membranes using detergents, which have the potential to perturbate their structure and dynamics. To circumnavigate this issue, an array of membrane mimetics has been developed that aim to reconstitute IMPs into native-like lipid environments that more accurately represent the biological membrane. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange-mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) has emerged as a versatile tool for probing protein dynamics in solution. The continued development of HDX-MS methodology has allowed practitioners to investigate IMPs using increasingly native-like membrane mimetics, and even pushing the study of IMPs into the in vivo cellular environment. Consequently, HDX-MS has come of age and is playing an ever-increasingly important role in the IMP structural biologist toolkit. In the present mini-review, we discuss the evolution of membrane mimetics in the HDX-MS context, focusing on seminal publications and recent innovations that have led to this point. We also discuss state-of-the-art methodological and instrumental advancements that are likely to play a significant role in the generation of high-quality HDX-MS data of IMPs in the future.

We present the atmospheric anomalies instigated through seismogenic sources by a multichannel observation using ground- and satellite-based systems. This study emphasizes the seismic event which happened on the east coast of Japan, near the Fukushima Prefecture on November 21, 2016 (in UTC), with a magnitude of 6.9 and a depth of 11.4 km. We mainly focus on the atmospheric and ionospheric irregularities via acoustic and electromagnetic channels originating from earthquakes in the process of the lithosphere, atmosphere, and ionospheric coupling (LAIC) mechanism. In the acoustic channel, we study the seismogenic atmospheric gravity wave (AGW) which perturbs the local lower atmosphere. The observation of nighttime fluctuations in the very low frequency (VLF) signals and total electron content (TEC) is used to investigate the atmospheric perturbation through the electromagnetic channel. For the ground-based observations, a VLF signal network consisting of 5 receivers in Japan is used to study by recording the VLF amplitude transmitted from the Japanese transmitter JJI (22.2 kHz). VLF nighttime fluctuation is used to check the unusualities due to the earthquake. Preseismic wavelike structures having periods of AGW are observed in the nighttime signal. Direct investigation of such AGWs is done by computing the potential energy related to AGW from the sounding of the atmosphere using broadband emission radiometry (SABER) temperature profiles mounted on the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. Ionospheric TEC inspection is done by using a ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver from the International GNSS Survey (IGS) station MIZU in Japan and observing anomalies in diurnal TEC around 6 and 10 days prior to the earthquake. We also obtain the wavelike structure of AGW from the small-scale fluctuation of TEC using wavelet analysis. All the parameters are found to be preseismic for this earthquake; the acoustics channel gives more consistent outcomes than the electromagnetic channel.

Since its emergence in the early 1990s, hemovigilance has gradually evolved from a blood safety concept focused on surveillance of adverse reactions and events in patients, to a well-defined system that monitors the entire transfusion chain and improves its safety. The importance of hemovigilance has been recognized globally in a relatively short time, but the level of its implementation varies significantly between countries. The cooperation of international organizations has significantly contributed to the promotion, implementation, and education in this field. Thanks to initiatives taken, the safety of transfusion practice has been improved in many segments, primarily related to the risks of adverse events in recipients of blood components. In parallel with changing transfusion practice, the hemovigilance process has also matured. In addition to the reduction of existing risks and the early detection of emerging risks, hemovigilance has also embraced the principles of patient blood management. Research in hemovigilance is more increasingly focused on specific categories of patients, specific blood components and methods of their preparation, rare reactions, and transfusion efficacy and efficiency. A proactive approach and use of big data can play an important role in achieving these goals. Additional and sustained efforts should be made to prevent underreporting of events and to improve data comparability through clear definitions and grading systems. This review provides a historical overview of hemovigilance and its achievements, current challenges, and future plans.

To report on zygomatic implant (ZI) survival rate and associated complications through a longitudinal retrospective cohort assessment.A total of 940 ZIs (rough: 781, machined: 159; immediate loading: 454, delayed loading: 486) and 451 standard implants (rough: 195, machined: 256; immediate loading: 58, delayed loading: 393) were placed in 302 adult patients with atrophic maxilla from December 1998 till September 2020. Following data collection reported complications were grouped based on their origin as infectious/ non-infectious biological and mechanical. Statistical analysis was performed to identify risk factors and preceding complications leading to implant loss (p0.05).The survival rate of ZI was found to be 89.9% and the average time between implant placement and an eventual loss was 4.8 years. The mean ZI follow-up period was 7.9±4.9 years. Amongst the infectious biological complications, sinusitis was the most reported (n=138) occurring at a mean follow-up time-point of 4.5 years, whereas infraorbital nerve hypoesthesia occurred more frequently in the non-infectious biological category (n=8, meantime: 0.3 years). The prosthetic screw fracture was the most reported complication of mechanical origin (n=29, meantime: 4 years). Furthermore, sinusitis, standard implant loss, zygomatic/peri-zygomatic region infection, and oroantral communication were significantly associated with ZI loss.ZI placement offered a high survival rate for the rehabilitation of severely atrophied maxilla with most losses occurring within the first five years at follow-up. The most frequently observed complication was sinusitis which tends to develop several years following implant placement.

The properties of non-parametric kernel estimators for probability density function from two special classes are investigated. Each class is parametrized with distribution smoothness parameter. One of the classes was introduced by Rosenblatt, another one is introduced in this paper. For the case of the known smoothness parameter, the rates of mean square convergence of optimal (on the bandwidth) density estimators are found. For the case of unknown smoothness parameter, the estimation procedure of the parameter is developed and almost surely convergency is proved. The convergence rates in the almost sure sense of these estimators are obtained. Adaptive estimators of densities from the given class on the basis of the constructed smoothness parameter estimators are presented. It is shown in examples how parameters of the adaptive density estimation procedures can be chosen. Non-asymptotic and asymptotic properties of these estimators are investigated. Specifically, the upper bounds for the mean square error of the adaptive density estimators for a fixed sample size are found and their strong consistency is proved. The convergence of these estimators in the almost sure sense is established. Simulation results illustrate the realization of the asymptotic behavior when the sample size grows large.

G-protein-coupled receptors signal through cognate G proteins. Despite the widespread importance of these receptors, their regulatory mechanisms for G-protein selectivity are not fully understood. Here we present a native mass spectrometry-based approach to interrogate both biased signalling and allosteric modulation of the β1-adrenergic receptor in response to various ligands. By simultaneously capturing the effects of ligand binding and receptor coupling to different G proteins, we probed the relative importance of specific interactions with the receptor through systematic changes in 14 ligands, including isoprenaline derivatives, full and partial agonists, and antagonists. We observed enhanced dynamics of the intracellular loop 3 in the presence of isoprenaline, which is capable of acting as a biased agonist. We also show here that endogenous zinc ions augment the binding in receptor–Gs complexes and propose a zinc ion-binding hotspot at the TM5/TM6 intracellular interface of the receptor–Gs complex. Further interrogation led us to propose a mechanism in which zinc ions facilitate a structural transition of the intermediate complex towards the stable state.

This systematic review was performed to assess the potential influence of orthognathic surgery on root resorption (RR).An electronic search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Central and Embase for articles published up to April 2022. Following inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of six articles were selected that reported on RR following orthognathic surgery. Risk of bias assessment was performed according to the ROBINS-1 and ROB-2 tools.The design of five studies was retrospective and one randomized clinical trial was included, with a follow-up period ranging between six months and ten years. The assessment methodologies mostly relied on two-dimensional imaging modalities where only one study used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for objective quantification via linear measurements. The percentage of teeth affected by RR varied between approximately 1 and 36%, where surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) and Le Fort I osteotomy showed the highest percentage of RR followed by bilateral sagittal split osteotomy.The present data tend to indicate that specific orthognathic procedures such as SARME and Le Fort I osteotomy may induce or reinforce RR. Yet, considering lack of evidence related to objective quantification of RR following orthodontic and/or orthognathic treatment, further CBCT-based prospective studies are required for an improved understanding of RR following different surgical procedures.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic that can lead to severe respiratory distress requiring hospitalization and can be fatal. Media have reported that various dietary supplements (DS) or their combination with different medications can prevent infection or decrease disease severity. Here, we analyzed data collected from 15,830 patient follow-up telephone interviews from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences COVID-19 testing sites from March 15 to August 1, 2020. Within the REDCap database, we recorded patient demographics and DS and medication use. In total, data on DS and medication use was available for 8,150 study participants, of whom 21.9% and 4.1% reported using DS or medications, respectively, to either prevent or treat COVID-19. The majority of respondents were female (64%) and non-Hispanic whites (44.5%). Most individuals (64.5%) who took DS were younger than 50 years of age. Products such as vitamin C (1,013, 33.2%), multivitamins (722, 23.6%), and vitamin D (294, 9.6%) were the most commonly used DS among the responders. Analysis of the DS use and symptom scores association did not provide a strong evidence of beneficial health effects of DS. The results of this study demonstrate that a significantly higher proportion of study participants considered usage of DS to mitigate or prevent COVID-19-related symptoms compared to those who preferred medications. However, lack of observable health benefits associated with ingestion of DS suggests that more rigorous research is needed to substantiate the label claims.

BACKGROUND: While sexuality and intimacy are suggested to contribute to quality of life (QoL), it is striking that the sexual problems of head and neck cancer patients have not been adequately studied. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to prospectively assess the impact of head and neck cancer and its treatment on sexuality and intimacy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire study with a 6-month follow-up period was conducted at the University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium, using the Maudsley marital questionnaire (MMQ), the sexual adjustment questionnaire (SAQ) and the short sexual functioning scale (SSFS) to prospectively assess the impact of head and neck cancer and its treatment on sexuality and intimacy. RESULTS: Twelve patients (67%) reported a negative impact on their sexuality and/or intimacy. There were significant declines in marital, sexual and general life satisfaction (p < 0.000) at the 6-month follow-up as compared to baseline. There was a significant increase in frustration after sexual activity (p = 0.031). Sexual desire was also impacted, with a near doubling of patients reporting a decline. The perceived importance of discussing sexual issues with one's physician significantly increased from 7 to 16 patients (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Sexual problems are common after head and neck cancer treatment. Using a screening instrument can help to identify patients that need intervention. Pulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasms comprise ~20% of all lung tumors. Typical carcinoid, atypical carcinoid, small cell carcinoma, and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma represent the 4 major distinct subtypes recognized on resections. This review provides a brief overview of the cytomorphologic features and the 2021 World Health Organization classification of these tumor types on small biopsy and cytology specimens. Also discussed are the role of immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis and molecular signatures of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors.

This study aims to explore the prevalence of Iatrogenic retroposition of the lips sequel (IRLS) after bicuspid extraction, associated dentofacial characteristics and the effectiveness of surgical treatment.and methods: Patients with bicuspid extraction as part of an orthodontic treatment plan were retrospectively included. IRLS was identified by clinical evaluation and cephalometric Legan and Burstone analysis. Association of demographic and cephalometric variables were assessed. The effectiveness of combined orthodontic-orthognathic correction of the retroposition of the lips was evaluated.Out of 144 patients with extracted bicuspids, eight Class I patients, nine Class II patients and five Class III patients were seeking treatment because their lips had retruded as a consequence of compensating orthodontic treatment. Lower jaw bicuspid extraction and a decreased vertical facial height in Class II patients correlated significantly more with IRLS development. Postoperative cephalometric analysis of orthodontic-orthognathic treated patients reported improvement in lip projection and naso-labial angle. Only two Class I patients reported postoperative normalization of the lip position according to Legan and Burstone.The consequence of bicuspid extractions on soft tissue profile differs according to skeletal jaw relation. The impact of orthognathic surgery on IRLS is beneficial, although insufficient to completely correct the facial profile when judged on cephalometric standards.

La memoria prospectiva (MP) consiste en la capacidad de recordar realizar acciones previstas en el futuro o de evocar intenciones demoradas. En la región latinoamericana, existen escasas medidas objetivas para su evaluación, siendo su investigación realizada principalmente mediante tareas de laboratorio y cuestionarios subjetivos autorreferenciales. El objetivo de este estudio es describir aquellas pruebas objetivas que han sido desarrolladas para la evaluación de la MP en la clínica. Para ello, se analizarán 5 dimensiones: cantidad y tipo de ítems contenidos en los instrumentos (basadas en tiempo y evento), tipos de tareas concurrentes empleadas, poblaciones en la que se han aplicado, análisis psicométricos reportados y países que disponen de normas de ejecución. Se realizó una revisión sistemática con dos revisores independientes. Al final se discute acerca del estado actual de la medición de la memoria prospectiva en la clínica.

The ground-based monitoring of the lower ionosphere by studying the perturbations of the subionospheric propagation of very-low-frequency/low-frequency (VLF/LF) signals is important in the research of a wide variety of geophysical and Sun/space extreme phenomena. Such perturbations are identified as anomalies in the signal received from the VLF/LF transmitters operating worldwide for military purposes, time code broadcasting, etc. Especially for the study of local ionosphere-influencing phenomena, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, typhoons, etc., the monitoring of several subionospheric propagation paths is necessary. However, it is very difficult to find in the market (or reproduce) hardware (HW) for wide-band VLF/LF receivers that could receive many different transmitters, while the involved software (SW) is mainly proprietary. Aiming to provide a low-cost and easy-to-build alternative for the scientists involved in this research field, we suggest a VLF/LF receiver setup based on amateur radio open-source HW and SW. Its key components are the so-called “mini-whip” active antenna and the freeware “SpectrumLab” and “GPS2Time”. The full HW schematics and all settings of the employed SW configuration for the proposed VLF/LF receiver setup are provided in the article. To check the reliability of the proposed receiver setup, two almost identical VLF/LF radio receivers were installed in the prefecture of Attica in Greece, in June and September of 2021, respectively. Examples of ionospheric perturbations due to different phenomena (solar flares, earthquakes, and a magnetic storm) are provided to show the ability of the proposed receiver setup to provide reliable data for ionosphere-related research.

The present aim was to estimate direct health care costs of patients suffering from post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy (PTTN) and to compare the use of health care services, medications, and costs between temporary and persistent (>3 months) PTTN cohorts. A pre-existing clinical dataset of PTTN patients visiting a tertiary orofacial pain clinic in Belgium was utilized, including symptoms and quality of life measurements. Cost and resource utilization data were obtained by Belgium's largest health insurance provider for a period of 5 years after onset. Data from 158 patients was analyzed. The average cost per patient in the first year after injury was €2353 (IQR 1426-4499) with an out-of-pocket expense of 25% of the total cost. Hospitalization and technical interventions were the main drivers of cumulative costs, followed by consultation costs. Purpose of Review Review work to create and evaluate educational materials that could serve as a primary prevention strategy to help both providers and patients in Panama, Colombia, and the USA reduce disease burden of Toxoplasma infections. Recent Findings Educational programs had not been evaluated for efficacy in Panama, USA, or Colombia. Summary Educational programs for high school students, pregnant women, medical students and professionals, scientists, and lay personnel were created. In most settings, short-term effects were evaluated. In Panama, Colombia, and USA, all materials showed short-term utility in transmitting information to learners. These educational materials can serve as a component of larger public health programs to lower disease burden from congenital toxoplasmosis. Future priorities include conducting robust longitudinal studies of whether education correlates with reduced adverse disease outcomes, modifying educational materials as new information regarding region-specific risk factors is discovered, and ensuring materials are widely accessible.

El puma (Puma concolor) es considerado como una especie en preocupación menor según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN); sin embargo, ha sido poco estudiado en algunas áreas de su distribución geográfica, por lo que la información sobre aspectos de interés de este mamífero carnívoro es escasa o nula en dichos territorios. En esta nota contribuimos a su conocimiento en Chile mediante resultados de fototrampeo, documentando el primer registro en la comuna de Putaendo. Se instalaron dos cámaras trampa en la zona de estudio, las cuales permanecieron activas durante ocho meses y mediante las que se pudo obtener el registro audiovisual de un individuo. Este registro abre nuevas interrogantes acerca de los motivos por los que un individuo se abre paso en zonas que no eran consideradas parte de su distribución. También nos permite plantearnos si este desplazamiento fue ocasional o si se trata de una expansión y colonización de nuevos hábitats, ya que al tratarse de un avistamiento cercano a poblaciones humanas y ganado doméstico, y tomando en consideración casos similares, existe la posibilidad de que se generen conflictos puma-humano, siendo de vital importancia aplicar técnicas de mitigación de conflicto preventivas.

Introduction Healthcare professionals, due to the nature of their work, have always experienced occupational stress, depression and low quality of life, which have been aggravated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim A large-scale cross-sectional descriptive correlational study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Greek healthcare professionals’ psychological status and quality of life. Material and Methods The study was conducted at “Attikon” General University Hospital and the 2nd Health Region in Athens, Greece. An assessment of anxiety and depression was carried out using the Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety and Depression Scale (SAS/SDS). To assess the participants’ Quality of Life (QoL) the Short Form Survey-36 (SF-36) was used. Results 147 healthcare professionals were enrolled in the study. 70.7% experienced normal stress levels, 23.8% mild, 4.8% moderate and 0.7% severe. Mild depression was experienced by 34.7%, moderate by 10.2% and severe by 1.4%, with a 53.7% showing no depressive symptoms. Women experienced higher levels of anxiety and depression (p=0.001 & 0.001 respectively), and were 5.4 times more at risk to develop anxiety [Odds Ratio (OR) 5.357, 95% Confidence Interval (CI), 1.95-14.72: p=0.001] and 3.4 depression (OR, 3.365, 95% CI, 1.59- 7.12: p=0.002). Nurses and other professionals experienced higher stress and depression levels (p=0.004 & 0.040 respectively) than doctors. Participants reporting more exhaustion exhibited higher anxiety and depression levels (p=0.001). Compared to the pre-COVID-19 era, women (p=0.001), other health professionals (p=0.001) and those experiencing more physical burnout during COVID-19 (p=0.005) reported worse physical health. Anxiety and depression were negatively correlated with most sub scales of SF-36 except social functioning and bodily pain (p=0.001). Conclusions Healthcare professionals’ QoL has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and they experience higher levels of anxiety and depression. There is a need to develop strategies to address the negative psychological impact of this pandemic on healthcare professionals.

Study Design: Retrospective study. Objective: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are common facial injuries with heterogeneity regarding aetiologies, fracture types, infraorbital nerve (ION) involvement, and treatment methods. The aim of this study was to identify associations between aetiologies, fracture types, and neurological complications. Additionally, treatment methods and recovery time were investigated. Methods: Medical files of 272 patients with unilateral and bilateral ZMC fractures were reviewed, whose cases were managed from January 2014 to January 2019 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University hospitals Leuven, Belgium. History of ION sensory dysfunction and facial nerve motoric dysfunction were noted during follow-up. Results: ION hypoaesthesia incidence was 37.3%, with the main causes being fall accidents, road traffic accidents, and interpersonal violence. Significant predictors of ION hypoaesthesia were Zingg type B fractures ( P = 0.003), fracture line course through the infraorbital canal ( P < .001), orbital floor fracture ( P < 0.001), and ZMC dislocation or mobility ( P = 0.001). Conclusion: Of all ZMC fractures, 37.3% exhibited ION hypoaesthesia. Only ZMC Zingg type B fractures (74.0%) were significantly more associated with ION hypoaesthesia. ION hypoesthesia was more likely (OR = 2.707) when the fracture line course ran through the infraorbital canal, and was less dependent on the degree of displacement. Neuropathic pain symptoms developed after ZMC fractures in 2.2% patients, posing a treatment challenge. Neuropathic pain symptoms were slightly more common among women, and were associated only with type B or C fractures. No other parameters were found to predict the outcome of this post-traumatic neuropathic pain condition.

Background/Introduction Few studies have examined the relationship between exercise and adherence to antihypertensive medication, examining all possible factors contributing to blood pressure control. Purpose The purpose of our study was to access the possible dependence relationship among hypertensive patients visiting the Behavioral Cardiology Unit in a Tertiary Hospital. Methods The study population consisted of patients reporting to the Behavioral Cardiology Unit in a Tertiary Hospital during a period of 6 months in 2021. In terms of holistic approach, all patients underwent a thorough clinical in-depth interview, using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS8), the Frail Questionnaire Screening Tool (Frailty Score) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). All patients also provided full history of exercise (at least 150 minutes of physical activity or 75 minutes of intense activity per week), while completing the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI). Results The population consisted of 42 hypertensive patients, 54.8% of them were females, with a mean age of all patients at 55.8±15.2 years. Body Mass Index was averaging at 27.6 kg/m2. Salt consumption above the daily suggested amount (>5gr/day) was reported by 60% of patients, binge drinking by 43% of them, while 43% had a history of active smoking. High adherence was reported by 17 patients (46%), medium adherence by 14 (37.8%) and low adherence by 6 (16.2%). Results indicate a relationship between exercise and adherence to medication. More specifically, Chi-Square test showed statistical significance between exercise and medium medication adherence in MMAS8 (MMAS8: 6-7, p=0.033). Moreover, statistical analysis showed significant relationship between exercise, frailty and PHQ-4 score. Particularly, patients with absence of exercise showed higher level of PHQ-4 score (F=7.07, p=0.011). Conclusions Our study highlights the possible dependency relationship of exercise and adherence to medication. Results indicate that patients with good adherence to medication have better behavioral activation. There is need for further research in this domain, to confirm the findings.

This paper proposes a multi-directional parametric architecture for transmitting and reproducing microphone array recordings using a reduced number of transport audio channels. The approach enables the maximum number of directional source signals to be adjusted and either configured to be restrictive, in order to reduce the number of transmission channels, or alternatively set higher, in order to improve the accuracy of the model. Ambient sounds, which remain once the directional sounds are subtracted from the input, are represented by a dedicated monophonic residual signal. After transmission, the source signals are spatialised over the playback system based upon the accompanying spatial metadata; whereas the monophonic residual signal is reproduced using a spatially incoherent source spreading algorithm. A binaural perceptual evaluation then followed. The results suggest that high spatial audio quality may be attained when reproducing four-channel array recordings using two audio transmission channels, and 25-channel and 32-channel recordings when transmitting four audio channels.

The ELSEM-Net (hELlenic Seismo-ElectroMagnetics Network, http://elsem-net.uniwa.gr) is a telemetric network of ground-based monitoring stations for the study of fracture-induced electromagnetic emissions. It comprises 11 telemetric stations, spanning all over Greece, and has continuously been operated for almost 30 years. In this paper we present the new, custom designed, instrumentation of the telemetric stations. Specifically, we present both the hardware and the firmware/software used, from antennae to data acquisition and data management. Finally, we present recent recordings prior to significant strong earthquakes (EQs) that have happened in Greece, as well as the obtained analysis results, using nonlinear time series analysis methods, indicating that the acquired signals embed important features associated with the impending EQ.

Purpose: Intraoperative stabilisation of bony fragments with maxillo-mandibular fixation (MMF) is an essential step in the surgical treatment of mandibular fractures that are treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The MMF can be performed with or without wire-based methods, rigid or manual MMF, respectively. The aim of this study was to compare the use of manual versus rigid MMF, in terms of occlusal outcomes and infective complications. Materials and methods: This multi-centric prospective study involved 12 European maxillofacial centres and included adult patients (age ≥16 years) with mandibular fractures treated with ORIF. The following data were collected: age, gender, pre-trauma dental status (dentate or partially dentate), cause of injury, fracture site, associated facial fractures, surgical approach, modality of intraoperative MMF (manual or rigid), outcome (minor/major malocclusions and infective complications) and revision surgeries. The main outcome was malocclusion at 6 weeks after surgery. Results: Between May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022, 319 patients-257 males and 62 females (median age, 28 years)-with mandibular fractures (185 single, 116 double and 18 triple fractures) were hospitalised and treated with ORIF. Intraoperative MMF was performed manually on 112 (35%) patients and with rigid MMF on 207 (65%) patients. The study variables did not differ significantly between the two groups, except for age. Minor occlusion disturbances were observed in 4 (3.6%) patients in the manual MMF group and in 10 (4.8%) patients in the rigid MMF group (p > .05). In the rigid MMF group, only one case of major malocclusion required a revision surgery. Infective complications involved 3.6% and 5.8% of patients in the manual and rigid MMF group, respectively (p > .05). Conclusion: Intraoperative MMF was performed manually in nearly one third of the patients, with wide variability among the centres and no difference observed in terms of number, site and displacement of fractures. No significant difference was found in terms of postoperative malocclusion among patients treated with manual or rigid MMF. This suggests that both techniques were equally effective in providing intraoperative MMF.

A 6-year-old girl presented with a grossly expansive lesion of the left lower jaw. Radiological investigations revealed a large mixed radiolucent/radio-opaque lesion of the left mandible extending into the ramus. Correlation of biopsy and imaging results lead to the diagnosis of an expansile form of focal cemento-osseous dysplasia. Surgical enucleation was performed, and the patient remained free of recurrence after 6 months of follow-up. When dealing with fibro-osseous lesions of the jaw, correlation of radiological and pathological results is mandatory to make a correct diagnosis and avoid unnecessarily extensive surgery.

This chapter discusses the preliminary results of the study of 18 archaeobotanical samples from Byzantine and Early to Middle Islamic occupation levels from the site of Khirbat ash-Sheikh 'Isa, located in Ghor as-Safi. Well-preserved pressed plant materials were also encountered and may aid in further reconstructing plant processing at the site. Sampling for archaeobotanical remains has been a part of the excavation protocol of the Ghor as-Safi Project since the beginning. Soil samples with macro-botanical remains were floated and later sieved both on site and at the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth at Safi, Jordan. It is common in archaeobotanical literature to refer to grass ‘seeds’; however, this is only a partially correct term as the seeds in grasses are fused to their fruits, and these parts are indistinguishable in charred archaeobotanical material.
