The small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) on HeLa nuclei demonstrates the bifractal nature of the chromatin structural organization. The border line between two fractal structures is detected as a crossover point at Q_{c}≈4×10^{-2}nm^{-1} in the momentum transfer dependence Q^{-D}. The use of contrast variation (D_{2}O-H_{2}O) in SANS measurements reveals clear similarity in the large scale structural organizations of nucleic acids (NA) and proteins. Both NA and protein structures have a mass fractal arrangement with the fractal dimension of D≈2.5 at scales smaller than 150 nm down to 20 nm. Both NA and proteins show a logarithmic fractal behavior with D≈3 at scales larger than 150 nm up to 6000 nm. The combined analysis of the SANS and atomic force microscopy data allows one to conclude that chromatin and its constitutes (DNA and proteins) are characterized as soft, densely packed, logarithmic fractals on the large scale and as rigid, loosely packed, mass fractals on the smaller scale. The comparison of the partial cross sections from NA and proteins with one from chromatin as a whole demonstrates spatial correlation of two chromatin's components in the range up to 900 nm. Thus chromatin in HeLa nuclei is built as the unified structure of the NA and proteins entwined through each other. Correlation between two components is lost upon scale increases toward 6000 nm. The structural features at the large scale, probably, provide nuclei with the flexibility and chromatin-free space to build supercorrelations on the distance of 10^{3} nm resembling cycle cell activity, such as an appearance of nucleoli and a DNA replication.

In the intermediate mixed state (IMS) of type-II/1 superconductors, vortex lattice (VL) and Meissner state domains coexist due to a partially attractive vortex interaction. Using a neutron-based multiscale approach combined with magnetization measurements, we study the continuous decomposition of a homogeneous VL into increasingly dense domains in the IMS in bulk niobium samples of varying purity. We find a universal temperature dependence of the vortex spacing, closely related to the London penetration depth and independent of the external magnetic field. The rearrangement of vortices occurs even in the presence of a flux freezing transition, i.e. pronounced pinning, indicating a breakdown of pinning at the onset of the vortex attraction.

Although the phase behavior of emulsions has been thoroughly investigated, the effect of flow on emulsion morphology, which is relevant for many applications, is far from being fully elucidated. Here, we investigate an emulsion based on two common nonionic surfactants in a range of water concentration where complex and diverse microstructures are found at rest, such as multilamellar and bicontinuous phases. In spite of such complexity, once subjected to shear flow, all the emulsions investigated are characterized by thinning filaments which eventually break up into a concentrated suspension of micro-sized water-based droplets dispersed in a continuous oil phase. The so-formed droplets tend to align in string-like structures. The emulsions exhibit a yield stress, whose value can be estimated by the plug-core velocity profiles in pressure-driven capillary flow, thus providing evidence of weakly attractive interdroplet interactions. The latter are consistent with droplet clustering and percolation observed at rest. These results can also be relevant to the flow behavior of other liquid–liquid systems, such as polymer blends, where the flow-induced microstructure is under debate as well.
