1. What do microplastics mean for aquatic food webs? Some insight from ongoing experimental work in a freshwater ecosystem laboratory

Abstract

Although research on microplastics (MPs) has evolved rapidly in recent years, researchers do not yet have a complete understanding of how MPs are impacting ecosystems. The effects of MP exposure are highly variable according to exposed species and MP traits. For example, aquatic zooplankton and smaller fishes that visually select their food might be more likely to ingest MPs due to resemblance to food items. Smaller-bodied animals also tend to contain higher concentrations of MPs by body weight in their digestive tracts and organs. In high enough concentrations, MPs might act to restrict energy flow through food webs by reducing the nutritional value of prey species, whether by food dilution, direct toxicity increasing homeostatic costs, or reductions in abundance. In this work, we used two in-lake, large mesocosm experiments to explore how exposure to microplastics affected the composition of essential food web nutrients – fatty acids – in yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and zooplankton. We found that MP concentration did not affect fatty acid composition in the fish and zooplankton when supplemental fish food was provided. However, preliminary findings from the second experiment suggest that body weight was lower in fish exposed to 29,240 particles L-1 MP concentrations when supplemental feeding was not provided. We will discuss how MPs might affect food webs by disrupting the flow of energy, how food webs might differ in resilience to these effects, our results so far from the experiments, and our future work on MPs and food webs. Abstract

Objective: This study sought to investigate clinical, systemic inflammatory and patient-reported outcomes comparing non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease using exclusively hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments or a combination approach. Cost implications of periodontal treatment within a UK NHS Dental Hospital are described. Methods: Fifty-five patients were treated between two studies (randomised controlled trial and cohort study) for generalised periodontitis using non-surgical periodontal therapy using hand instruments (HI), ultrasonic instruments (UI) or a combination approach (CI) with a 90 day follow up. Comparative analysis was carried out with respect to instrumentation technique at day 90. Success of treatment was objectively assessed against published criteria. Financial implications and patient reported outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy are explored by descriptive analyses. Given $n$ piles of tokens and a positive integer $k \leq n$, the game Nim$^1_{n, =k}$ of exact slow $k$-Nim is played as follows. Two players move alternately. In each move, a player chooses exactly $k$ non-empty piles and removes one token from each of them. A player whose turn it is to move but has no move loses (if the normal version of the game is played, and wins if it is the mis\'{e}re version). In Integers 20 (2020) 1-19, Gurvich et al gave an explicit formula for the Sprague-Grundy function of Nim$^1_{4, =2}$, for both its normal and mis\'{e}re version. 6. Kinship in the borderlands of praxis: A theological performance auto/ethnography

Abstract

This thesis explores the lives of those whose experience as ordained ministers, psychological therapists or adult educators leaves them feeling marginal within their respective professions. The Introduction recounts an epiphanic experience in the researcher’s praxis which made him question received professional wisdom. Chapter One traces the labyrinthine contours of qualitative research and expounds a model of contemplative inquiry derived from the account of the disciples at the Easter tomb (John 20) and introduces autoethnography and creative arts research as the key research methods. Chapter Two places border discourse in historical context and expounds Gloria Anzaldúa’s notion of ‘borderlands’ as the conceptual basis of the study. Five short autobiographical pieces form the basis of Chapter Three and serve to personally locate the author within the Borderlands. Chapter Four widens the exploration from ‘auto’ to ‘inter-ethnography’ and, in a series of eight ‘ink polaroids’, introduces those who participated in the study before presenting them in their own voice in a medium adapted from Carol Gilligan’s work on I-Poems. Chapter Five identifies the recurring themes of identity, spirituality, therapy, pedagogy and kinship and records what Borderland participants would like to say to their mainstream counterparts. The penultimate chapter playfully adopts Dwight Conquergood’s concept of the researcher as co-performative witness and presents data analysis in a musical composition for two pianos with narrative commentary. The final chapter outlines Anzaldúa’s neglected spiritual teaching and plots the coordinates of borderland grace. The study concludes that Borderlanders are not misfits but people who occupy a distinct vocational stance in the world. As a piece of creative art, this genre-challenging work transgresses conventional borders between academic analysis and lived experience, scholarly knowledge and embodied wisdom, audience as passive observer and as active participant. As a contribution to professional praxis, it traces the journey of nine practitioners from silence to speech, discouragement to empowerment, isolation to kinship. In fostering greater integration and wellbeing among the practitioners involved, it contributes to improved levels of spiritual, therapeutic and educational care for those with whom they work.
