<>The sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is a novel intelligent optimization algorithm that simulates the foraging and anti-predation behavior of sparrows. The sparrow search algorithm (SSA) can optimize continuous problems, but in reality many problems are binary problems. In this paper, the binary sparrow search algorithm (BSSA) is proposed to solve binary optimization problems, such as feature selection. The transfer function is crucial to BSSA and it directly affects the performance of BSSA. This paper proposes three new transfer functions to improve the performance of BSSA. Mathematical analysis revealed that the original SSA scroungers position update equation is no longer adapted to BSSA. This paper improves the position update equation. We compared BSSA with BPSO, BGWO, and BBA algorithms, and tested on 23 benchmark functions. In addition, statistical analysis of the experimental results, Friedman test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test were performed to verify the effectiveness of BSSA. Finally, the algorithm was used to successfully implement feature selection and obtain satisfactory results in the UCI data set.<>

We study a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) problem where the agents interact over a given network. The goal of the agents is to cooperatively maximize the average of their entropy-regularized long-term rewards. To overcome the curse of dimensionality and to reduce communication, we propose a Localized Policy Iteration (LPI) algorithm that provably learns a near-globally-optimal policy using only local information. In particular, we show that, despite restricting each agent's attention to only its $\kappa$-hop neighborhood, the agents are able to learn a policy with an optimality gap that decays polynomially in $\kappa$. In addition, we show the finite-sample convergence of LPI to the global optimal policy, which explicitly captures the trade-off between optimality and computational complexity in choosing $\kappa$. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of LPI.

Zanthoxylum armatum and Zanthoxylum bungeanum, known as 'Chinese pepper', are distinguished by their extraordinary complex genomes, phenotypic innovation of adaptive evolution and species-special metabolites. Here, we report reference-grade genomes of Z. armatum and Z. bungeanum. Using high coverage sequence data and comprehensive assembly strategies, we derived 66 pseudochromosomes comprising 33 homologous phased groups of two subgenomes, including autotetraploid Z. armatum. The genomic rearrangements and two whole-genome duplications created large (~4.5 Gb) complex genomes with a high ratio of repetitive sequences (82%) and high chromosome number (2n = 4x = 132). Further analysis of the high-quality genomes shed lights on the genomic basis of involutional reproduction, allomones biosynthesis and adaptive evolution in Chinese pepper, revealing a high consistent relationship between genomic evolution, environmental factors and phenotypic innovation. Our study provides genomic resources and new insights for investigating diversification and phenotypic innovation in Chinese pepper, with broader implications for the protection of plants under severe environmental changes.

PurposeThis paper attributes the clustered occurrence of over-guarantee crises of Chinese listed firms to behavioural interactions among them when engaged in guarantee decisions, verifying the existence of the peer effect (PE) and its role in the formation mechanism of such crises.Design/methodology/approachReviewing the literature, the authors constructed a panel dataset of Chinese listed firms from 2011 to 2019 to empirically verify two types of PE by constructing industrial and regional PE indicators. The authors conduct grouped regressions according to firm heterogeneity and managers’ individual characteristics to explain the motives for the over-guaranteeing PE and also analysed the interaction between the financial market and the PE to reveal the external governance mechanism.FindingsThe authors find that the over-guarantee behaviour of Chinese listed firms exhibits strong industrial and regional correlations, which may lead to guarantee crises clustering. Firms with lower information quality, smaller asset size, and higher managerial overconfidence will be more likely to be influenced by other listed firms to over-guarantee. A favourable financial market environment can effectively inhibit listed firms from imitating the guaranteeing behaviour of peer firms.Research limitations/implicationsThis study’s results challenge the traditional theoretical perspective of independent financial decision-making, describe the interaction among listed firms in decision-making, and expand the existing theoretical literature on over-guaranteeing. The stickiness of guarantee behaviour may affect the accuracy of the authors’ estimations, and the differences between the industrial and regional PE require further research.Practical implicationsThe PE of over-guaranteeing shows that a single firm has a “spill-over effect” on the guarantee decisions of other firms in the same industry or region. Improving the information environment of listed firms financing decision-making and establishing a more demanding guarantee access mechanism may reduce this dependence on listed firms’ decisions. Firms should also appropriately strengthen decision-making constraints on managers to avoid istortions in financial decisions due to managers’ personal cognitive biases.Originality/valueUsing PE theory, the authors explain the influence mechanisms of financial distress of Chinese listed firms due to industrial and regional clustering of over-guarantee behaviour from the perspective of behavioural interaction.

The functions of oral mucosa include barrier, sensation, and secretion. The barrier protection function is particularly important, which includes physical barrier and immunological barrier. Few studies have revealed the function of oral mucosa by displaying the map of normal oral mucosal cells from the perspective of single cells. Here, single-cell transcriptome sequencing was used to bring a relatively comprehensive map of the normal oral mucosal cells. In total, 26,398 cells from three cases of normal oral mucosa were analyzed by single-cell RNA-sequencing and 14 distinct cell groups were defined, 7 of which were immune cells. We performed subgroup classification and heterogeneity analysis of epithelial cells, T cells, and macrophagocytes, which found a subpopulation of epithelial cells with high expression of major histocompatibility complex class II molecules, a subpopulation CD8

Policymakers must make management decisions despite incomplete knowledge and conflicting model projections. Little guidance exists for the rapid, representative, and unbiased collection of policy-relevant scientific input from independent modeling teams. Integrating approaches from decision analysis, expert judgment, and model aggregation, we convened multiple modeling teams to evaluate COVID-19 reopening strategies for a mid-sized United States county early in the pandemic. Projections from seventeen distinct models were inconsistent in magnitude but highly consistent in ranking interventions. The 6-mo-ahead aggregate projections were well in line with observed outbreaks in mid-sized US counties. The aggregate results showed that up to half the population could be infected with full workplace reopening, while workplace restrictions reduced median cumulative infections by 82%. Rankings of interventions were consistent across public health objectives, but there was a strong trade-off between public health outcomes and duration of workplace closures, and no win-win intermediate reopening strategies were identified. Between-model variation was high; the aggregate results thus provide valuable risk quantification for decision making. This approach can be applied to the evaluation of management interventions in any setting where models are used to inform decision making. This case study demonstrated the utility of our approach and was one of several multimodel efforts that laid the groundwork for the COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub, which has provided multiple rounds of real-time scenario projections for situational awareness and decision making to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since December 2020.

The FDA-approved oral multi-kinase inhibitor, sorafenib (BAY 43-9006, Nexavar), is the first approved systemic therapy for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although it has been shown to significantly improve the overall survival of patients with HCC, drug resistance limits the response rate to this therapeutic. Here, we report that acquired sorafenib resistance is associated with overexpression of the deacetylase, SIRT7, and a high level of ERK phosphorylation. Further, we identify that the hyperactivation of ERK is controlled by SIRT7-mediated deacetylation of DDX3X. The inhibition of SIRT7 combined with sorafenib resulted in a marked reduction of cell viability in vitro and of tumor growth in vivo. It seems plausible that SIRT7 is responsible for the acquired sorafenib resistance and its inhibition is most likely beneficial together in conjunction with sorafenib by suppressing ERK signaling.HighlightsSorafenib resistance in HCC is associated with SIRT7 and ERK hyperactivation.Suppression of SIRT7 combined with sorafenib restores sensitivity to sorafenib.SIRT7 controls sorafenib resistance through ERK activation by mediating DDX3X deacetylation.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory disease occurring in the oral mucosa. Bacteria are a key driver of mucosal immune responses and can induce changes in gene expression and function of epithelial keratinocytes. IL-36γ can induce the expression of antimicrobial peptides, cytokines, and chemokines, and is widely involved in many chronic inflammatory diseases. Our aim is to explore the role of IL-36γ in the pathological process of OLP when Prevotella melaninogenica (P. melaninogenica) invades the oral mucosa. The expression of IL-36γ in OLP lesions and mice was detected by immunohistochemistry. Recombinant human IL-36Gamma (rhIL-36γ) was used to treat oral keratinocytes and the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines were detected by qRT-PCR and ELISA. The expression of IL-36γ and TRPV1 was detected by western blotting following co-culturing P. melaninogenica with oral keratinocytes. The mRNA expression of IL-36γ was detected by qRT-PCR. From our results, IL-36γ was upregulated in OLP lesions. Exogenous rhIL-36γ promoted the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antibacterial peptides in oral keratinocytes. The expression of IL-36γ was significantly increased following the stimulation of P. melaninogenica in oral keratinocytes and mice. TRPV1 activation was induced by P. melaninogenica and its activation enhanced the expression of IL-36γ. IL-36Ra could reduce the inflammation in OLP in vitro. In summary, overexpression of IL-36γ in OLP lesions could promote its pathogenesis by inducing inflammation. P. melaninogenica invasion of oral keratinocytes could induce the expression of IL-36γ by the activation of TRPV1, thereby regulating the interaction between bacteria and oral epithelial cells.

It is important to know the safety and efficacy of vaccination in immunocompromised people living with HIV (PLWH), but currently, there is limited data on the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines’ safety and immune responses in PLWH. In this prospective observational study, 139 PLWH and 120 healthy controls were enrolled and monitored for 21–105 days after a two-dose vaccination. The safety, anti-receptor binding domain IgG (anti-RBD-IgG) and anti-spike-IgG responses, and RBD-specific memory B cell (MBC) responses were evaluated. The overall adverse events within seven days were reported in 12.9% (18/139) of PLWH and 13.3% (16/120) of healthy controls. No serious adverse events occurred in both groups. Overall, the seroprevalence of anti-RBD-IgG in PLWH was significantly decreased (87.1% vs. 99.2%; ppTrial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05043129..

Lead-free Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 piezoelectric ceramics were successfully prepared by reactive flash sintering of Bi2O3-NaCO3-TiO2 mixed powders, where phase transformation and densification occurred simultaneously. The influence of electric field strength, current density and holding time at constant current state on the phase transformation and densification were investigated. The current density had a significant influence on the extent of phase transformation and densification. The holding time had no influence on the phase transformation, but had an important effect on crystallinity of sample. The sintered bulks exhibited the maximum polarization Pm of 16.8 μC/cm2, remanent polarization Pr of 9.6 μC/cm2, coercive field Ec of 29 kV/cmm, maximum electric-field-induced strain of 0.053%, and piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 85 pC/N. The reactive flash sintering can prepare the dense and single-phase ceramics from multiphase precursor powders in one step of flash, providing a new way for rapid production of ceramic materials.

To conduct a comprehensive analysis of prospectively measuring the concentration of soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2) to predict left atrial (LA) low-voltage areas (LVAs) and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA).This was a prospective cohort study. A total of 84 patients, including 54 paroxysmal AF cases and 30 persistent AF cases who underwent RFA, were recruited. Electroanatomical voltage mapping determined the extent of LVAs. The serum level of sST2 was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients were followed for 12 months after the RFA procedure to verify AF recurrence.The concentration of sST2 measured in the sample was 17.90-198.77 pg/mL, and the range of LA LVAs was 0-85.6%. The sST2 level positively correlated with LVAs (r = 0.40; P = 0.005). When comparing the top and bottom quartile, sST2 is significantly associated with LA LVAs (OR = 1.833, 95% CI: 1.582-2.011, P = 0.004). When compared with the 1st quartile group, the multivariable adjusted hazard ratios for AF recurrence after RFA were 1.57 (95% CI: 1.182-1.795) for the 4th quartile group, 1.44 (95% CI: 1.085-1.598) for the 3rd quartile group, and 1.27 (95% CI: 0.954-1.318) for the 2nd quartile group. The AF-free survival rates of patients with 1st quartile and 4th quartile sST2 levels after ablation were 95% and 59.6%, respectively (Log Rank test, P = 0.027).Elevated sST2 levels of AF patients were associated with higher LA LVAs and a significantly increased risk of recurrence. The circulating sST2 concentration might be a pre-diagnostic marker of AF recurrence after RFA.

A mathematical model of the plate-fin heat exchanger filled with catalyst (CFPFHX) is established to investigate the continuous cooling process coupled with ortho-para hydrogen conversion at 42–70 K. The flow and heat transfer performance and the efficiency of ortho-para hydrogen conversion in the CFPFHX are quantitatively evaluated, and the effects of the structural parameters on the flow and heat transfer coupled with ortho-para hydrogen conversion are analyzed. The results show that the Elovich model is the best existing kinetic models of ortho-para hydrogen conversion with an average relative deviation of 1.8%. The Colburn heat transfer factor (j factor) of the hot side of the CFPFHX is 4.3 times that of the plate-fin heat exchanger (PFHX), and the thermal enhancement factor (TEF) of the hot side is 37.7% of that of the PFHX. Meanwhile, for the CFPFHX, the j factor and the TEF of the hot side under different structural parameters are always about 8–10 times and 68%–93% of that of the cold side respectively. Therefore, the CFPFHX can ensure the flow and heat transfer performance and realize the ortho-para hydrogen continuous conversion. And a fin with the larger flow area (high fin height, wide fin spacing and small fin thickness) has a better flow and heat transfer performance and ortho-para hydrogen conversion. The outlet para-hydrogen ratio youtp-H2 and the mass space velocity vm in the CFPFHX have an approximate linear trend. When mass space velocity vm ≤ 0.6589 kg/(m3·s), the outlet para-hydrogen ratio youtp-H2 can meet the requirement at 42–70 K. Above all, the mechanism of flow and heat transfer coupled with ortho-para hydrogen conversion is revealed for the first time in this study, which can provide a theoretical guidance for the application of the integrated technology in large scale hydrogen liquefaction process.

Advanced mRNA vaccines play vital roles against SARS-CoV-2. However, most current mRNA delivery platforms need to be stored at −20 °C or −70 °C due to their poor stability, which severely restricts their availability. Herein, we develop a lyophilization technique to prepare SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccines with long-term thermostability. The physiochemical properties and bioactivities of lyophilized vaccines showed no change at 25 °C over 6 months, and the lyophilized SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines could elicit potent humoral and cellular immunity whether in mice, rabbits, or rhesus macaques. Furthermore, in the human trial, administration of lyophilized Omicron mRNA vaccine as a booster shot also engendered strong immunity without severe adverse events, where the titers of neutralizing antibodies against Omicron BA.1/BA.2/BA.4 were increased by at least 253-fold after a booster shot following two doses of the commercial inactivated vaccine, CoronaVac. This lyophilization platform overcomes the instability of mRNA vaccines without affecting their bioactivity and significantly improves their accessibility, particularly in remote regions.

BackgroundThe neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) response after COVID-19 vaccination after liver dysfunction is unclear. In this study, we evaluated the NAbs response after COVID-19 vaccination in hospitalized patients suffering from liver dysfunction.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study with longitudinal follow-up, we enrolled eligible patients with liver dysfunction and healthy volunteers with full-course COVID-19 vaccination. Blood samples were collected for the NAbs testing at the time of admission and after treatment. Multiple regression analysis to assess independent risk factors affecting NAbs response.ResultsA total of 137 patients and 134 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. Both seropositivity (65.7% vs 80.6%, pvs 4.94 log2 AU/ml, pvs 84.6%, pvs 4.32 log2 AU/ml, pConclusionsNAbs response to COVID-19 inactivated or subunit recombinant vaccines was waning in patients with liver dysfunction. Moreover, patients with male sex, severe liver injury and chronic liver diseases have an increased risk of poor antibody responses.

TRPV1 channel is a sensitive ion channel activated by some noxious stimuli and has been reported to change many physiological functions after its activation. In this paper, we present a scientometric approach to explore the trends of the association between TRPV1 channel and inflammation and our goal is to provide creative directions for future research. The related literature was retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection and then analyzed by CiteSpace and VOSviewer. A total of 1533 documents were screened. The most productive country, institution, journal, author, cited journal, cited author, and references were the United States, University of California, San Francisco, Pain, Lu-yuan Lee, Nature, Michael J. Caterina, and Caterina MJ (Science, 2000), respectively. The most influential country and institution were Switzerland and University of California, San Francisco, respectively. The cooperation among countries or institutions was extensive. Amounts of documents were distributed in molecular, biology, genetics. TRPV1-associated neurons, neuropeptides, neuropathic pain, neuroinflammation, and neurogenic inflammation were mainly hotspots in this field. The research has presented valuable data about previous studies in the link of TRPV1 channel and inflammation.
