Abstract: Drug delivery systems based on nanotechnology exhibit a number of advantages over traditional pharmacological formulations. Polymeric nanoparticles are commonly used as delivery systems and consist of synthetic or natural polymers that protect drugs from degradation in physiological environments. In this context, indolamine melatonin has been associated with several biological functions, including antioxidant, antitumor, immunoregulatory, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective effects. However, its availability, half-life, and absorption depend upon the route of administration, and this can limit its therapeutic potential. An alternative is the use of polymeric nanoparticle formulations associated with melatonin to increase its bioavailability and therapeutic dose at sites of interest. Thus, the objective of this review is to provide a general and concise approach to the therapeutic association between melatonin and polymeric nanoparticles applied to different biological disorders and to also highlight its advantages and potential applications compared to those of the typical drug formulations that are available.

Background: Nanoparticle formulations development for anti-aging treatment is increasing due to their multifunctional properties. These nanotechnological strategies can target cellular/ molecular pathways of the skin affected by the aging process. However, a review of these strategies is required to discuss their efficacy/safety and establish the needs for further research. Objective: Innovative nanotechnological advances for skin anti-aging/rejuvenation are summarized and discussed in this work. Method: The information in this review was extracted from recent and relevant studies using nanotechnology for anti-aging treatment from scientific databases. Results and Discussion: Results show an enhanced skin anti-aging effect of actives-loaded nanoparticles of next generation (nanostructured lipid carriers, fullerenes, transfersomes, protransfersomes, niosomes, ethosomes, transethosomes, glycerosomes, phytosomes) compared with nanocarriers of first generation or conventional formulations. Anti-aging active ingredients such as, flavonoids (rutin, hesperidin, quercetagetine, quercetin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, myricetin, silibinin, curcuminoids, isoflavones); vitamins (E, D3, CoQ10); acids (hyaluronic, ascorbic, rosmarinic, gallic); extracts (Citrus sinensis, Tagetes erecta L., Achillea millefolium L., Citrus aurantium L., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Aloe vera, propolis earned by Apis mellifera); and other compounds (adenosine, beta-glucan, heptapetide DEETGEF, resveratrol, cycloastragenol, melatonin, botulinum toxin, grapeseed oil), have been successfully entrapped into nanoparticles for skin rejuvenation. This encapsulation has improved their solubility, bioavailability, stability, permeability, and effectivity for skin anti-aging, providing a controlled drug release with minimized side effects. Conclusion: Recent studies show a trend of anti-aging herbal active ingredients-loaded nanoparticles, enhancing the moisturizing, antioxidant, regenerating and photoprotective activity of the skin. Suitable safety/shelf-life stability of these novel formulations is key to a successful translation to the clinic/industry.

- Abstract

Rheumatology - Abstract
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and destruction. Objective: Establish the association between Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) infection, body mass index (BMI), joint involvement, and serum adipokines in first-degree relatives (FDR) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: The cross-sectional study evaluated 124 FDR and 124 healthy controls (HC). The clinical examination included joint and radiographic evaluation and calculation of BMI. Serum adipokine levels were measured (leptin, vaspin, adiponectin, resistin, and adipsin), as were the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies. Investigations were performed to detect P. gingivalis, and anti-P. gingivalis antibodies. Statistical analyses were per-formed to confirm associations. Results: Leptin levels in FDR were associated with BMI >25 (OR, 2.64; 95%CI, 1.17-5.97; P=0.019), radiographic damage (Simple Erosion Narrowing Score [SENS])/hands, total SENS, and joint space narrowing in feet (P=0.037, 0.026, 0.020, respectively). FDR had more tender joints (P=0.018); this finding was associated with high levels of leptin and resistin and low levels of adip-sin (P=0.040, 0.040, and 0.019, respectively). The presence of P. gingivalis was related to FDR, low levels of adipsin, resistin, adiponectin, and a trend toward higher levels of leptin (P=0.002, 0.001, 0.003, and 0.060, respectively), whereas anti-P. gingivalis antibodies were related to low levels of adipsin (P=0.001). Conclusion: In FDR, serum adipokine levels were associated with overweight and the presence of P. gingivalis. Adipokine levels were also associated with joint involvement. Hence, adipokines may be involved in the pathogenesis of RA in FDR and warrant further investigation.

Purpose: Uncertainties remain about the safety and efficacy of therapies for managing intracranial hypertension in acute brain injured (ABI) patients. This study aims to describe the therapeutical approaches used in ABI, with/without intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, among different pathologies and across different countries, and their association with sixmonths mortality and neurological outcome. Methods: A preplanned subanalysis of the SYNAPSE-ICU study, a multicentre, prospective, international, observational cohort study, describing the ICP treatment, graded according to Therapy Intensity Level (TIL) scale, in patients with ABI during the first week of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Results: 2320 patients were included in the analysis. The median age was 55 (I-III quartiles = 39-69) years, and 800 (34.5%) were female. During the first week from ICU admission, no-basic TIL was used in 382 (16.5%) patients, mild-moderate in 1643 (70.8%), and extreme in 295 cases (eTIL, 12.7%). Patients who received eTIL were younger (median age 49 (I-III quartiles = 35-62) vs 56 (40-69) years, p

It is of great importance to detect the presence of microorganisms in healthcare services. On this basis, strategies should be developed to maintain safety inside the hospital environment by preventing the transmission of microorganisms, thus preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAI). In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the precocious detection of infection and/or colonization by multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms is key. For this reason, the routine monitoring of patients that are infected or colonized by MDR microorganisms is mandatory. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of epidemiological surveillance swabs and microbiological cultures in ICU patients in a university public hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Medical records of patients admitted to the ICU from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2020, submitted to epidemiological surveillance cultures, and presenting factors correlated to the development of HAI were evaluated. This was a descriptive, retrospective and observational, non-interventional study. The study population was composed mainly of male patients (66.3%), with a mean age of 59 years, coming from the Medical Clinic department, and septicemia was the main cause of hospitalization in the ICU. The analyses showed that 9.5% of the patients were colonized by MDR microorganisms. The samples were collected at the ICU, and a higher frequency of gram-negative bacteria was observed, including A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. The most frequently prescribed antimicrobials were β-lactams and glycopeptides, and the same patient was treated using more than one class of antimicrobials. The surveillance culture is key to understanding the microbiological profile of the institution. The collection of swabs and microbiological cultures from different sites could be used to adopt routines and recommend measures aimed at controlling and reducing the HAI rates as well as the emergence of MDR outbreaks. These procedures could contribute to the creation and maintenance of a safe and effective healthcare service.

- Abstract

Education - Abstract
The experiences that the COVID-19 pandemic brought led educational institutions to use disruptive technologies that guaranteed continuity of learning in the face of any adverse scenario, ranging from the conceptual to the experiential. This article aims to describe how the metaverse contributed to university education, and through these factors the success of its application was evidenced. For which a systematic review of the literature was developed. The research is exploratory-descriptive level. A total of 738 documents from the Scopus, ERIC, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar databases were reviewed, from which 16 articles were finally extracted. The content analysis technique was used through the Atlas Ti software. With this, it was obtained as a result that the type of metaverse used to a greater extent was virtual reality. Likewise, the areas of study in which they were applied to a greater extent are in education: medicine, engineering and administration. In addition, the factors that evidenced the improvement in university education as an effect of the application of the metaverse are academic performance and interaction between students. It is concluded that, given the pandemic scenario and the need to continue the teaching-learning process considering the limitations offered by the virtual modality in which experiential learning is not developed, it led to the development of learning scenarios through the metaverse. However, it will be necessary to reduce the gaps in terms of teaching skills, create teaching scenarios in the virtual world, use and evaluate them permanently.

The sodium channel and clathrin linker 1 gene (SCLT1) has been involved in the pathogenesis of various ciliopathy disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome, orofaciodigital syndrome type IX, and Senior-Løken syndrome. Detailed exams are warranted to outline all clinical features. Here, we present a family with a milder phenotype of SCLT1-related disease. Comprehensive eye examination including fundus images, OCT, color vision, visual fields and electroretinography were performed. Affected individuals were assessed by a pediatrician and a medical geneticist for systemic features of ciliopathy. Investigations included echocardiography, abdominal ultrasonography, blood work-up for diabetes, liver and kidney function. Genetic testing included NGS retinal dystrophy panel, segregation analysis and transcriptome sequencing. Two male children, age 10 and 8 years, were affected with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obesity and mild photophobia. The ophthalmic exam revealed reduced best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), strabismus, hyperopia, astigmatism and moderate red-green defects. Milder changes suggesting photoreceptors disease were found on retinal imaging. Electroretinogram confirmed cone photoreceptors dysfunction. Genetic testing revealed a homozygous likely pathogenic, splice-site variant in SCLT1 gene NM_144643.3: c.1439 + 1del in the proband and in the affected brother. The unaffected parents were heterozygous for the SCLT1 variant. Transcriptome sequencing showed retention of intron 16 in the proband. In this report, we highlight the importance of further extensive diagnostics in patients with unexplained reduced vision, strabismus, refractive errors and ADHD spectrum disorders. SCLT1-related retinal degeneration is very rare and isolated reduced function of cone photoreceptors has not previously been observed.

Background. Stroke is a widespread and complex health issue, with many survivors requiring long-term rehabilitation due to upper-limb impairment. This study is aimed at comparing the perceived usability of two feedback-based stroke therapies: conventional mirror therapy (MT) and immersive virtual reality mirror therapy (VR). Methods. The study involved 45 participants, divided into three groups: the stroke survivors ( n = 15 ), stroke-free older adults ( n = 15 ), and young controls ( n = 15 ). Participants performed two tasks using both MT and VR in a semirandom sequence. Usability instruments (SUS and NASA-TLX) were applied at the end of the activities, along with two experience-related questions. Results. The results indicated that both MT and VR had similar levels of perceived usability, with MT being more adaptable and causing less overall discomfort. Conversely, VR increased the perception of task difficulty and prevented participants from diverting their attention from the mirror-based feedback. Conclusion. While VR was found to be less comfortable than MT, both systems exhibited similar perceived usability. The comfort levels of the goggles may play a crucial role in determining the usability of VR for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke.

OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of tibial compression on radiographic cranial tibial translation measurements in healthy dogs and those with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture and establish specific criteria for the radiographic diagnosis of CCL rupture. ANIMALS 60 dogs. PROCEDURES Dogs were divided into 3 groups with 20 dogs each: group 1, healthy adult dogs; group 2, adult dogs with CCL rupture; and group 3, healthy young dogs. For each dog, 2 images of the stifle joint in mediolateral projection were taken, of which 1 was conventional and 1 was under tibial compression. Variables were measured in each radiographic projection: the patellar ligament angle, the patellar ligament insertion angle, the angle of tibial translation measured by 2 different methods, and the linear distance between the points of CCL origin and insertion (DPOI). Additionally, a novel variable, DPOI ratio, was evaluated. RESULTS Regarding radiographic positioning, tibial compression significantly changed most of the variables in the within-group comparison. The variable DPOI were not different with and without tibial compression in the group of healthy adult dogs but were different for dogs with CCL rupture. Thus, these are important parameters in the diagnosis of CCL rupture. In the analysis of a novel variable, DPOI ratio, dogs with CCL rupture could be distinguished from healthy dogs at a high level of specificity and sensitivity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE DPOI ratio values above 1.18 were consistently indicative of CCL rupture, thus allowing for a precise radiographic diagnosis of the condition.

The increased complexity in the current business environment connected with the globalisation of economies and rapid technological developments makes firms depend on innovation and, in the process, develop dense networks of relationships, making collaboration an essential requisite for innovation. Thus, collaboration develops based on complex social networks from which innovation emerges. From this perspective, collaboration takes a systematic approach, where social relationships are crucial. This article describes the innovation behaviour of firms operating in India and introduces collaboration as a system drawing from the systems theory and triple helix innovation model. The results of the mixed methods study conducted pointed toward a fragile collaboration framework. Triangulation was employed to provide a deeper understanding. Furthermore, limited understanding of collaboration as a social system has constrained social interactions, leading to limited knowledge production, application, and knowledge sharing, with technological development and innovation delays. The article lists crucial factors from the perspectives of industry and academia to foster a collaboration framework.

- Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis L.) is a crucial crop in Ecuador, considerably affected by black palm weevil Rhynchophorus palmarum L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for several years. Despite its importance, the behavior of the black weevil in Ecuador is not well comprehended presently. Therefore, this study aimed to predict infestation patterns of the black palm weevil in Ecuador using a mathematical model based on monitoring data. Data on the number of insects per trap from a commercial oil palm farm in Quinindé, Ecuador, was collected every two weeks for five years (2016-2020) and analyzed using the Classical Fourier (CF) spectrum and the Dickey-Fuller test to determine seasonality. The trend component of the data dropped from 16.33 in January 2017 to 11.96 in January 2019, with a fluctuation ranging from -0.11 to 2.50 observed for the entire data set. The results obtained after fitting the model ranged from -0.11 to 3.19, with a maximum of 5.30. The augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test for the black weevil time series yielded a result of -5.60 (P
