This study determined the instructional competencies of Mathematics teachers and their performance in the execution of tasks in Lopez East District. The study used the descriptive-evaluated-correlational method of research with documentary analysis in describing the effects of instructional competencies and performance of the teachers. Purposive sampling was used as the locale of the study. The statistical tools used were weighted mean, frequency count, percentage, rank order, Kendall Coefficient of Concordance, and its corresponding Chi-square test. The instructional competencies of the teachers were Very Much Evident. There is a significant agreement on the rank orders on the instructional competencies in terms of knowledge of subject matter, communication skills, instructional practices, evaluation, and professionalism and there is no significant agreement in terms of problem solving. The teachers’ performance in the execution of tasks was Outstanding. There is a significant agreement on the rank orders of the level of teacher’s performance. The result of this study was a great help to the learners and also to the teachers, as facilitators of learning, are encouraged to employ modern methodologies such as using computer-based resources in teaching. The researcher was motivated to assess the instructional competencies of Mathematics teachers and their teaching performance in Lopez East District.

Esta ponencia muestra una unidad didáctica diseñada dentro del Proyecto Iberoamericano sobre la Naturaleza de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (EANCYT) EDU2010-16553 financiado por Plan Nacional de I+D del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España), que busca promover en futuros profesores de ciencias y de enseñanza primaria mejor comprensión de la naturaleza de la ciencia y la tecnología. Pretende que evolucionen algunas actitudes/creencias reduccionistas detectadas en el anterior Proyecto Iberoamericano de Evaluación de Actitudes Relacionadas con la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Sociedad (PIEARCTS) respecto a las decisiones tecnológicas de un país. Plantea inicialmente la catástrofe de Fukushima, los cuestionamientos que surgen a las políticas energéticas globales relacionados con el uso de la energía nuclear versus energías mas limpias, para focalizarse finalmente en la complejidad y diversidad de condicionantes que se ponen en juego en tales decisiones. Propone actividades que desarrollan competencias cognitivo- linguísticas, metacognitivas, procedimientos y actitudes asociados a la sustentabilidad. Se evaluará el impacto de la unidad didáctica en distintos contextos/ géneros a través de un pre y post test a aplicar a dos muestras de alumnos de 18 y 22 años divididos en grupo experimental y grupo control, usando como instrumento el cuestionario estandarizado de opiniones sobre ciencia, tecnología y sociedad (COCTS).

Esta ponencia muestra una unidad didáctica diseñada dentro del Proyecto Iberoamericano sobre la Naturaleza de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (EANCYT) EDU2010-16553 financiado por Plan Nacional de I+D del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España). Busca promover en estudiantes la complejización de esas creencias reduccionistas respecto a la Tecnología detectadas en el anterior Proyecto Iberoamericano de Evaluación de Actitudes Relacionadas con la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Sociedad (PIEARCTS). Las actividadesparten de una situación problemática contextuada que resuelven en grupo a través de la creación de un objeto tecnológico. La finalidad última es llevarlos a reflexionar sobre la tarea confrontando la propia definición inicial de Tecnología con tres tópicos/creencias dados del sentido común sobre la misma, a fin de rectificarla y ampliarla tomando conciencia de su visión también humanística y de esa interacción dialéctica que establece con la Ciencia. Se evaluará el impacto de tal unidad didáctica a travésde la aplicación de un pre y post test a dos muestras dealumnos de 12 y 15 años de un grupo experimental y de otro control,usando como instrumento cuestiones del cuestionario estandarizado de opiniones sobre ciencia, tecnología y sociedad (COCTS).

En vastas regiones tropicales de México la ganadería se practica de forma extensiva, en suelos delgados y forrajes poco nutritivos, que incrementan las emisiones de gases con efecto invernadero (eGEI). En este sentido, las unidades ganaderas de esta región deben usar fuentes alternativas de forraje para enfrentar el desafío de reducir su eGEI. Los sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) con leguminosas nativas se han planteado como una alternativa viable. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar, a través de un modelo in silico (simulación del sistema), el impacto ambiental, el uso de la tierra y la productividad de SSP con leguminosas regionales en unidades de vaca-becerro en el este de Yucatán, México. Como estudio base, se llevó a cabo una análisis de ciclo de vida (LCA) para dos unidades vaca-becerro en la región. Luego, se calcularon y modelaron modificaciones relevantes para simular la operación con uno de los dos SSP: uno con L. leucocephala (SSP-leu) y el otro con B. allicastrum + G. ulmifolia (SPP-Ram) como forraje alternativo. Estos cambios en la fuente de forraje se centraron en la reducción de metano y el aumento de contenido de proteína de alimentación. El alcance del estudio fue de puerta a puerta de la unidad. La unidad funcional (UF) fue un kilogramo de peso vivo de bovino (ajustado a 18.5 % de proteína cruda) por hectárea y por año (KgPV-aj-1ha-1año-1). Las categorías de impacto ambiental evaluadas fueron: potencial de calentamiento global (PCG en KgCO2-eq KgPV-aj-1 ) y uso de suelo (US en m2 KgPV-aj-1), de acuerdo a las directrices del IPCC. En el presente estudio la productividad promedio fue de 126.9±21.8, 149±25.5 y 169.2±32.4 KgPV-aj-1 para monocultivo, SSP-Leu y SSP-Ram, respectivamente. Para el PCG los valores fueron de 34.9±2, 37.4±1.1 y 38.1±0.6 KgCO2-eq KgPV-aj-1 y el de US fue de 80±14.1, 68±11.3 y 60±11.3 m2 KgPV-aj-1 para Monocultivo, SSP-Leu y SSP-Ram, respectivamente. A pesar de la diferencia numérica, no hubo una diferencia estadística entre los sistemas para las variables evaluadas, ya sea para la implementación del SSP con Leuacaena (SPP-Leu) o con Ramón + Guácimo (SPP-RAM), en unidades vaca-becerro. Finalmente, dado que es posible que la mejora de la dieta funcione en mayor medida en sistemas más productivos, se recomienda hacer simulaciones de SSP en unidades de doble propósito para complementar nuestros hallazgos.

Background: Exogenous melatonin may effectively improve the sleep-wake cycle and sleep quality in subjects with age or disease related decrease in endogenous melatonin production or response. A controlled release melatonin-based medication, Circadin® has been developed and licensed for insomnia; in addition to several food supplements available on the market. However, the quality and release profile of these melatonin containing products may vary. Aims: The current study aimed to compare three melatonin containing products, all of them marketed in Spain: a licensed medicine prolonged release tablet, Circadin® 2 mg, and two food supplements, Aquilea® 1,95mg and Oniria® 1,98 mg. Materials and Methods: Three batches of each product were analyzed for melatonin content, inter-batch variability and dissolution profile. Results: Our results confirm a large gap in quality control of the two melatonin containing food supplements, where Aquilea® and Oniria® showed poorer quality control as demonstrated by high variability between batches in melatonin content compared to Circadin®. Moreover, the extended release characteristics of Circadin® were evident in its profile, which exhibited an initial release of 70% at the 4-hour mark, followed by a consistent and sustained release lasting up to 8 hours. Conclusion: In terms of the dissolution profile, only Circadin® provides the prolonged release profile as indicated in the specifications, with proven efficacy and safety for the improvement of sleep-onset, sleep maintenance and quality throughout the whole night.

La globalización ha eliminado brechas comerciales que limitaban las relaciones internacionales, uno de los fundamentos de la economía moderna que impulso el desarrollo de miles de negocios; el problema, la saturación del mercado donde se ofrecen los mismos servicios o bienes, dejando a la deriva empresas que no pueden adaptarse a la variabilidad en la demanda u ofrecer ese valor añadido o singular que marca la diferencia de la competencia. El presente proyecto se desarrolla en una empresa comercializadora de productos para riego en la zona noroeste del estado de Sonora. La problemática es la presencia de problemas de organización en almacén, lo que se traduce en tiempos excesivos en atención y servicio al cliente, agotamiento, sobre inventario, perdida de productos y registros conflictivos. Mediante la implementación de varios elementos de control y gestión, se desarrolla un sistema de control de inventario, capaz de mejorar el flujo de materiales en almacén y llevar registros precisos y confiables al enlazar herramientas físicas y digitales, la implementación de estas acciones de mejora, se expresan en el incremento significativo de la satisfacción del cliente al proveer el producto correcto en tiempo y forma. La metodología e implementación presentan la importancia de cada elemento dentro del sistema, la dependencia entre estos y la capacidad de adaptarse a las necesidades y limitantes de la empresa. Estos métodos, técnicas u herramientas utilizadas son de uso común en el campo de la ingeniería industrial, lo cual habilita una sencilla integración y entendimiento en empresas con poca experiencia en el tema.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous electrolysis for the treatment of patients with tendinopathies. Data sources A systematic search of publications was conducted in Pubmed, Cinahl, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science. Methods The Oxford 2011 Levels of Evidence and the Jadad scale were used to assess the quality of studies. The mean and standard deviation were obtained for each study group and used to calculate the effect size. The DerSimonian and Laird method was used to develop a random-effects model. Results Of the 14 articles, four applied percutaneous electrolysis to the knee, three to the shoulder, three to the elbow, two to the hip and two to the ankle and foot. A meta-analysis on intensity of pain (evaluated with algometer and the Visual Analogue Scale) was performed on studies comparing percutaneous electrolysis with a control group, indicating that the groups treated with percutaneous electrolysis had better results ( p = 0.01). Although percutaneous electrolysis did not overcome the analgesic effect achieved by corticosteroid injections. Conclusions The percutaneous electrolysis is effective for the treatment of tendinopathies. The combination of this technique with eccentric training has proven to be one of the most effective treatments to date for improving pain. PROSPERO Registration: CRD42021230005.

La trilogía de Pinedo nos presenta diferentes escenarios postapocalípticos en los que, sin embargo, persiste alguna forma de cultura. Esta aparece representada de forma predominantemente negativa: como represión (principalmente de instintos sexuales); fuente de deberes y culpas que agobian a los sujetos y los hacen infelices; dispositivo ideológico que, por una parte, produce sujetos obedientes y, por otra, un enemigo considerado “bárbaro” o “indecente”. Frente “al malestar en la cultura”, los personajes protagónicos de la trilogía asumen distintas salidas: la transgresión, la fuga hacia la locura y la asunción total de la ley.

The acoustic adaptation hypothesis (AAH) and ecological character displacement (ECD) are two potential mechanisms shaping call evolution that can predict opposite trends for the differentiation of signals. Under AAH, signals evolve to minimize environmental degradation and maximize detection against background noise, predicting call homogenization in similar habitats due to environmental constraints on signals. In contrast, ECD predicts greater differences in call traits of closely related taxa in sympatry because of selection against acoustic interference. We used comparative phylogenetic analyses to test the strength of these two selective mechanisms on the evolution of advertisement calls in glassfrogs, a highly diverse family of neotropical anurans. We found that, overall, acoustic adaptation to the environment may outweigh effects of species interactions. As expected under the AAH, temporal call parameters are correlated with vegetation density, but spectral call parameters had an unexpected inverse correlation with vegetation density, as well as an unexpected correlation with temperature. We detected call convergence among co-occurring species and also across multiple populations from the same species in different glassfrogs communities. Our results indicate that call convergence is common in glassfrogs, likely due to habitat filtering, while character displacement is relatively rare, suggesting that costs of signal similarity among related species may not drive divergent selection in all systems.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic that emerged in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019, spread rapidly around the world with almost 600 million cases and 6.3 million deaths today. The most affected were health workers with at least three times the risk of contracting the disease than the general community. Most studies on seroprevalence in health workers focus on hospital care establishments and what happens in Primary Health Care (PHC) has not been investigated with the same intensity.Objectivesto determine the prevalence and know the variation of antibody titers for SARS-CoV-2 in serial samples of primary healthcare personnel from the commune of La Pintana.Methodan analytical observational study with a cross-sectional and a longitudinal component, carried out from November 2020 to June 2021. The first component consisted of an IgG antibody seroprevalence study performed at baseline (time 0) in volunteer of a universe of 900 workers. The longitudinal component considered the monitoring of IgG antibodies in those who presented a positive result at baseline and the analysis of neutralizing antibodies in a random sub-sample of 50% of them. Additionally, sociodemographic and clinical information was collected via a questionnaire. Univariate, bivariate, and longitudinal analyses were performed to evaluate differences in antibodies. The study was approved by the Universidad del Desarrollo’s Scientific Ethics Committee.Results463 primary healthcare workers participated, mostly women and with a median of 38 years; doctors and nurses represented 9.5% each and 14.7% had a history of COVID-19. The seroprevalence at baseline was 22.3% and was associated with younger age, being a doctor and having been in close contact of a case. IgG titers increased with the vaccine, but decreased over time. At the 6-month follow-up, 76% had neutralizing antibodies. Those belonging to indigenous peoples had higher IgG levels and higher rates of neutralizing antibodies.ConclusionHealthcare workers were highly affected by COVID-19, and the medical profession and younger age were factors associated with increased risk. Antibodies decrease over time, highlighting the importance of follow-up studies, as well as the importance of vaccination boosters in healthcare workers, especially those in PHC.FinancingThis project was funded by the Universidad del Desarrollo, COVID19-UDD 2020-21 Funds.

This retrospective observational study compared severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA load in nasopharyngeal specimens (NPs) from patients with breakthrough coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the Omicron BA.1 or BA.2 sublineages. The convenience sample was composed of 277 outpatients (176 female/112 male; median age, 48 years; range, 12–97) with breakthrough COVID-19 (n = 130 due to BA.1 and n = 147 due to BA.2). All participants had completed a full vaccination schedule and 56% had received a booster vaccine dose at the time of COVID-19 breakthrough microbiological diagnosis. NPs were collected within 7 days (median 2 days) after symptom onset. The TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific) was used to estimate viral loads in NPs. Overall, viral RNA loads in NPs were comparable (p = 0.31) for BA.1 (median, 7.1 log10 copies/ml; range, 2.7–10.6) and BA.2 (median, 7.5 log10 copies/ml; range, 2.7–10.6), yet peak viral load appeared to be reached sooner for BA.2 than for BA.1 (Day 1 vs. Days 3–5; p = 0.002). Time elapsed since last vaccine dose had no significant impact on SARS-CoV-2 RNA loads in the upper respiratory tract (URT) for either BA.1 or BA.2. La sobrecarga de métodos en Java, es un tema muy importante en programación ya que permite crear métodos dentro de una clase con el mismo nombre, siempre que cada uno de ellos tenga una firma distinta. Se realizó esta práctica de sobrecarga de métodos, ya que es una de las primeras materias de programación que el alumno cursa y al no poseer los conocimientos básicos de la programación, hacen que la materia se les dificulte y por ende existan altos índices de reprobación. Con la implementación de esta práctica se observó que al alumno adquiere los conocimientos de una forma más práctica y además le sirve como guía para la comprensión de los diversos temas que comprende la asignatura y, de igual manera, otras materias que se relacionan.

Se diseñó un Sistema de Seguimiento de Egresados y empleadores acorde al programa del Tecnológico Desarrollo Nacional de México, con el objetivo de contar con información sobre el desempeño profesional y personal de los exalumnos, así como de los requerimientos del sector laboral. Dicha información, permitirá evaluar e implementar mejoras en el Proceso Educativo. El problema se deriva de la dificultad de acceder a esta información de manera personal por cuestiones de tiempo y/o distancia. Se consideraron diferentes tecnologías en 4 etapas desde el diseño hasta su implementación: Windows, XAMPP, Visual Studio Code, Bootstrap, HTML5, CSS 3, PHP 7, Responsive Web Design. El resultado es el primer módulo del sistema terminado que permite obtener información precisa, concentrándola en un solo sitio donde es posible visualizarla en cualquier momento, con graficación automática, disponible en internet lo que permite el acceso a un mayor número de encuestados.

Hypophysiotropic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) neurons function as metabolic sensors that regulate the thyroid axis and energy homeostasis. Less is known about the role of other hypothalamic TRH neurons. As central administration of TRH decreases food intake and increases histamine in the tuberomammillary nuclei (TMN), and TMN histamine neurons are densely innervated by TRH fibers from an unknown origin, we mapped the location of TRH neurons that project to the TMN. The retrograde tracer, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), was injected into the TMN E1–E2, E4–E5 subdivisions of adult Sprague–Dawley male rats. TMN projecting neurons were observed in the septum, preoptic area, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), perifornical area, anterior paraventricular nucleus, peduncular and tuberal lateral hypothalamus (TuLH), suprachiasmatic nucleus and medial amygdala. However, CTB/pro-TRH178-199 double-labeled cells were only found in the TuLH. The specificity of the retrograde tract-tracing result was confirmed by administering the anterograde tracer, Phaseolus vulgaris leuco-agglutinin (PHAL) into the TuLH. Double-labeled PHAL-pro-TRH boutons were identified in all subdivisions of the TMN. TMN neurons double-labeled for histidine decarboxylase (Hdc)/PHAL, Hdc/Trh receptor (Trhr), and Hdc/Trh. Further confirmation of a TuLH-TRH neuronal projection to the TMN was established in a transgenic mouse that expresses Cre recombinase in TRH-producing cells following microinjection of a Cre recombinase-dependent AAV that expresses mCherry into the TuLH. We conclude that, in rodents, the TRH innervation of TMN originates in part from TRH neurons in the TuLH, and that this TRH population may contribute to regulate energy homeostasis through histamine Trhr-positive neurons of the TMN.

After a time away from the classrooms and laboratories due to the global pandemic, the return to the teaching activities during the semester represented a challenge to both teachers and students. Our particular situation in a Microbial Physiology course was the necessity of imparting in a shorter time, laboratory practices that usually take longer. This article describes a two-week long laboratory exercise that covers several concepts in an interrelated way: conjugation as a gene transfer mechanism, regulation of microbial physiology, production of secondary metabolites, degradation of macromolecules and biofilm formation. Utilizing a Quorum Quenching (QQ) strategy, the Quorum Sensing (QS) system of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is first attenuated. Then, phenotypes regulated by QS are evidenced. QS is a regulatory mechanism of the microbial physiology that relays on signal molecules. QS is related in P. aeruginosa to several virulence factors, some of which are exploited in the laboratory practices presented in this work. QQ is phenomenon by which QS is interrupted or attenuated. We utilized a QQ approach based on the enzymatic degradation of the P. aeruginosa QS signals in order to put in evidence QS-regulated traits that are relevant for our Microbial Physiology course.

Knowledge of body composition is essential for athletes for their sport performance. It has yet to be determined whether differences in body composition are present between international and non-international players playing in the same elite professional club competition. Similarly, it is not yet clear whether differences in body composition according to ethnic origin exist in the elite professional game, where relative homogeneity is to be expected among soccer players. There is no single anthropometric profile that guarantees sporting success, as the somatotype of football players differs according to their individual characteristics. The aim of this study was to assess the description and comparison of the body composition profile of latin american professional football players playing in european leagues. The sample was composed of 238 subjects football players from European professional football leagues. Differences were found in all variables measured. The present study shows that in Latin American professional football players playing in Europe, there are significant differences in different body composition variables such as weight, height, WC, skinfold and fat values. This means that the treatment of these data and the possible classifications of sporting performance carried out in football clubs should be different to other European or African-American football players.

La Color es una reflexión de varios encuentros de cocina que permiten impulsar espacios de intercambios culinarios y de exploración de los territorios de Llico, en la costa de Arauco y Poduco Alto en Santa Juana. Este proyecto vincula las prácticas y saberes de un grupo de siete cocineras y un buzo mariscador, que visibilizan un modo de hacer y pensar la experiencia culinaria heredada y localizada, validando y reconociendo el rol de las cocineras dentro de su medio local, así como los contextos sociales y culturales que las determinan, buscando establecer procesos de producción local como la relación entre los recursos de cada territorio y su consecuente equilibrio medio ambiental, nos evidencian matices que atienden de manera transversal a esta identidad territorial.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions may have affected children and adolescent’s mental health adversely. We cast light on this question using primary and specialist consultations data for the entire population of children of age 6–19 years in Norway (N = 908 272). Our outcomes are the monthly likelihood of having a consultation or hospitalization related to mental health problems and common mental health diagnoses. We compared a pandemic (2019–2021) to a pre-pandemic (2017–2019) cohort using event study and difference-in-difference designs that separate the shock of the pandemic from linear period trends and seasonal variation. We found temporary reductions in all mental health consultations during lockdown in spring 2020. In fall 2020 and winter 2021, consultation volumes in primary care increased, stabilizing at a higher level in 2021. Consultations in specialist care increased from spring 2021. Our findings could suggest a worsening of mental health among adolescents.

Microalgae offer a very good basis for use as a sustainable source of raw materials for technical applications, since a large number of suitable chemical compounds can be obtained from them. In the research project ALBINA (German acronym for: Algae-based – Biological – Renewable), components of micro-algae have been processed in order to test them as additives for lubricant applications. The obtained results of the technical tests in machining and forming show a great potential of the algae extracts with regard to their use as EP/AW additives. Under the premise of certain process parameters, in metal cutting it is possible to achieve an equivalent tool life time compared to conventional additives, when algae substances are used. In metal forming, positive results have been obtained by using algae extracts in the ring compression test and deep drawing process. Part 1 of the publication describes the technical parameters and chemical analyses from the investigations, while Part 2 focuses on the results obtained from the technical tests.

El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la eficacia de la intervención psicológica en línea ofrecida a los usuarios por el Servicio de Psicología Aplicada durante el período de alerta sanitaria decretado por la COVID-19. Adicionalmente, se cuantificó la satisfacción y eficacia percibida por el usuario, después de dicha intervención. Se incluyeron 60 adultos (70.4%, mujeres) con una edad promedio de 41.49 años. Los instrumentos que se utilizaron pre y post-intervención fueron las versiones abreviadas del Listado de Síntomas (SA-45), la medida de resultados clínicos (CORE-OM), el Inventario de Afrontamiento (COPE-28) y la Escala de Resiliencia de Connor-Davidson (CD-RISK). El Cuestionario de Satisfacción del Cliente (CSQ-8) y la Percepción percibida de la eficacia de la intervención fueron cumplimentados después de finalizada la intervención. Este dispositivo fue diseñado con los objetivos de disminuir la sintomatología inicial mediante psicoeducación y ejercicios breves de regulación para potenciar las estrategias positivas de afrontamiento y resiliencia. Los resultados mostraron una disminución significativa (p < .05) de la sintomatología inicial, en todas las dimensiones analizadas y una mejoría de las estrategias de afrontamiento y resiliencia. Además, se observaron puntuaciones globales elevadas en la satisfacción y eficacia percibida por el usuario. En conclusión, nuestros resultados apuntan hacia una elevada eficacia de la intervención breve en línea en situaciones de confinamiento.

El objetivo primordial de este estudio fue describir los beneficios de la cultura organizacional en la gestión educativa. El trabajo se realizó bajo el enfoque cuantitativo, considerando una metodología descriptiva y un diseño documental-bibliográfico. Para ello, se recolectó toda la información a partir de la revisión de los artículos arbitrados, trabajos de grado, libros, entre otros, empleando la técnica de análisis de contenido escrito y sintético. De esta forma, se conformaron las concepciones que convergieron con los temas tratados y se realizó un constructo teórico, el cual dio lugar al entramado argumentativo de los ejes centrales abordados para la investigación. Para concluir, vale resaltar que la cultura organizacional dentro del contexto gerencial en el entorno educativo, permite un buen manejo del proceso educativo desde una perspectiva horizontal donde todos los miembros del mismo se tratan por igual y trabajan cooperativamente para el alcance de un desarrollo óptimo intelectual, institucional, comunitario y global desde la escuela.

This article highlights the emergence of intentional communities known as ecovillages (ecoaldeas) in Mexico, exploring how humans seek to design sustainable futures in part by re-making rural livelihoods. Ecovillages are inherently speculative ventures, or as Burke and Arjona (2013) note, laboratories for alternative political ecologies, inviting—and indeed, necessitating—the reimagination of human lives with greater consideration for the natural world. In this sense, such communities might be understood as “exilic spaces” (O’Hearn and Grubačić 2016), in that they seek to build autonomous and self-sustaining agricultural, social, and economic systems while also reflecting a stance of resistance to neoliberal capitalist structures. At the same time, communities may also remain dependent on connections to broader regional or global markets in diverse and interconnected ways. Understanding ecovillages as diverse and emergent “worldings” (de la Cadena and Blaser 2018), I ask how these experimental social ventures reckon with their connections to the very systems they are positioned against. To trace out how communities negotiate this fragile space, this article is concerned with how ecovillagers spend their time at work—particularly when it comes to managing relationships with and between more-than-human beings. Drawing on participant observation with ecovillagers and more-than-human others they work with, I explore how the concept of “rentabilidad” (profitability) is differently constructed. To this end, I highlight ethnographic examples where rentabilidad is purposefully reconceptualized with more-than-human lives in mind; such a shift, I suggest, hinges on ecovillagers’ individualized relations with the beings they (imagine themselves) to care for.

The GPN-loop GTPase Npa3 is encoded by an essential gene in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Npa3 plays a critical role in the assembly and nuclear accumulation of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII), a function that may explain its essentiality. Genetic interactions describe the extent to which a mutation in a particular gene affects a specific phenotype when co-occurring with an alteration in a second gene. Discovering synthetic negative genetic interactions has long been used as a tool to delineate the functional relatedness between pairs of genes participating in common or compensatory biological pathways. Previously, our group showed that nuclear targeting and transcriptional activity of RNAPII were unaffected in cells expressing exclusively a C-terminal truncated mutant version of Npa3 (npa3∆C) lacking the last 106 residues naturally absent from the single GPN protein in Archaea, but universally conserved in all Npa3 orthologs of eukaryotes. To gain insight into novel cellular functions for Npa3, we performed here a genome-wide Synthetic Genetic Array (SGA) study coupled to bulk fluorescence monitoring to identify negative genetic interactions of NPA3 by crossing an npa3∆C strain with a 4,389 nonessential gene-deletion collection. This genetic screen revealed previously unknown synthetic negative interactions between NPA3 and 15 genes. Our results revealed that the Npa3 C-terminal tail extension regulates the participation of this essential GTPase in previously unknown biological processes related to mitochondrial homeostasis and ribosome biogenesis.

El presente artículo tiene como principal objetivo analizar la transformación que vivió el Estado mexicano durante la década de 1980 y derivada de la crisis de 1982. Partiendo del hecho de que para entender la situación actual de transformación y cambio es necesario crear una narrativa histórica que nos permite vincular dicho fenómeno con el comienzo de lo que se ha denominado repliegue, retirada o transformación del Estado de bienestar, el texto pretende mostrar cómo se suscitaron los eventos que promovieron, en primera instancia, dicho cambio para poder, con estos insumos, poder pensar el periodo actual. Así pues, para realizar lo anterior, se echa mano de la visión transformacionalista del Estado, ejemplificada en los trabajos de Bob Jessop y Phillip G. Cerny, complementándose con la construcción narrativa de las crisis de Colin Hay, para demostrar como la crisis de la deuda permitió la creación de una narrativa dominante que legitimó las acciones tomadas para modificar la trayectoria del Estado mexicano.

International audience; Drought severity has pervasive impacts on honey production via direct impacts on water resources and nectar availability. The current mega-drought in Chile has impacts on water resources and forest vigor, particularly in the Mediterranean and Temperate regions where honey production is concentrated. While honey production plays an important role in the local rural economy and providing pollination services to other agricultural activities, studies of the long-term impacts of the mega-drought on honey production are scarce. Here, we evaluate the impact of climate variability on historical changes in honey production in the Mediterranean (32°S–37°S) and Temperate (37°S–41°S) regions of Chile, using annual honey production records of beekeepers together with national records of honey exports. We also used questionnaires and interviews to evaluate beekeeper perceptions regarding the effects of climate change on honey production and adaptation practices in both regions. Results indicated a declining trend in honey production and exports in the last decade, largely related to changes in precipitation and temperature in both regions. Declines in honey production affected 82% of beekeepers, 80% of whom had employed adaptive measures, and 74% considered that these measures were effective. The drier, warmer Mediterranean region showed more severe declines in precipitation and honey production, which beekeepers reported as a main contributing factor to transhumance from the Mediterranean to the Temperate region. This is the first study to show the effects of drought on honey production in Chile, providing a foundation for future climate change adaptation strategies within apiculture.

Este trabajo de investigación pretende relatar los sucesos que evolucionaron la educación a distancia durante la pandemia por el virus SARVS-COV2, y en el cual se tuvo la necesidad de adaptar contenidos hacia un enfoque intercultural, puesto que gracias a la apertura escolar que originó la modalidad a distancia, permitió ofertar el ingreso a nivel medio superior a jóvenes que se encontraban en puntos geográficos alejados, concursando por un espacio a nivel nacional para pertenecer a la comunidad estudiantil de preferencia. La pandemia mostro áreas de oportunidad donde unificó a que los alumnos trabajaran en línea con el apoyo gubernamental con el fin de evitar el rezago académico y la deserción escolar en México. Se incluye una propuesta para integrar a los estudiantes de diversas culturas mediante el enfoque intercultural, esto crea pertenencia e integración en una comunidad escolar, además los docentes deberán actualizarse constantemente y estar preparados para enfrentar tanto problemas sencillos de un alumno de su localidad como para aquellos de diferentes lugares, ideologías, tipos de habilidades y conocimientos. Se debe concientizar a la comunidad educativa sobre la necesidad de participación y la influencia que tiene la familia en él, integrando estrategias didácticas que avoquen a la interculturalidad.

Considerando costos de transacción, este artículo evalúa el desempeño de dos estrategias activas de portafolio, utilizando técnicas de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios (MCO) y de regresiones aparentemente no relacionadas (SUR), para los mercados accionarios de Brasil, Chile, México y Perú. La primera estrategia contempla portafolios de empresas con buen uso del endeudamiento, y la segunda, lo opuesto. Ambas están basadas en los estados financieros emitidos bajo las Normas Internacionales de Información Financiera (NIIF). Los resultados indican que, por un lado, las estrategias no exhiben un desempeño superior a su respectivo mercado accionario y, por otro, solo en Chile, la primera estrategia supera en desempeño a la segunda.

Two recent strands of the structural vector autoregression literature use higher moments for identification, exploiting either non-Gaussianity or heteroskedasticity. These approaches achieve point identification without exclusion or sign restrictions. We review this work critically and contrast its goals with the separate research program that has pushed for macroeconometrics to rely more heavily on credible economic restrictions. Identification from higher moments imposes stronger assumptions on the shock process than second-order methods do. We recommend that these assumptions be tested. Since inference from higher moments places high demands on a finite sample, weak identification issues should be given priority by applied users.

Patterns of variation in the size of vulture foraging groups, and their ecological causes and consequences, remain little explored despite strong links with the carrion recycling service that this key functional group provides. We documented the group size-frequency pattern of Andean condors Vultur gryphus gathered to feed on 42 equine carcasses experimentally placed in Bolivia, between 2012 and 2019, along an elevation range of 1,300–4,500 m asl. Based on the location (altitude and latitude) of the foraging groups, we examined the relationship between their size and species’ population parameters (size and trend), habitat conditions, and livestock carcass availability and predictability. Condors utilized a high frequency (93%) of carcasses forming groups that ranged from 1 to 80 individuals (mean = 25, median = 18) and shaped a “lazy-J curve” typical pattern of size-frequency distribution whereby few groups (5, 12%) were large (> 55 individuals) and most (21, 50%) were relatively small (

Background: There is a concern that exposure to psychosocial stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic may have led to a higher incidence of mental disorders. Thus, this study aimed to compare trends in incidence rates of depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders in primary- and specialist health care before (2015-2019) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). Methods: We used aggregated population registry data to calculate incidence rates of mental disorders from primary (The Norwegian Control and Payment of Health Reimbursement Registry (KUHR)) and specialist (The Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR)) health care. The analyses included all Norwegian residents aged 18-65 during the study period. Incident cases were defined as having no previous registration with the same mental disorder in KUHR (from 2006) or NPR (from 2008). We used linear prediction models and mean models to compare incidence rates and test trends before and during the pandemic. Results: During the pandemic, the incidence rates among women were higher or as predicted for OCD in specialist care and for eating disorders in both primary and specialist care. Incidence rates for depression and phobia/OCD among both genders in primary care and phobic anxiety disorders among both genders in specialist care were lower or as predicted. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic may have led to more women needing treatment for OCD and eating disorders in the Norwegian population. The decreased incidence rates for some disorders might indicate that some individuals either avoided seeking help or had improved mental health during the pandemic.

Observations of debris disks have significantly improved over the past decades, both in terms of sensitivity and spatial resolution. At near-infrared wavelengths, new observing strategies and post-processing algorithms allow us to drastically improve the final images, revealing faint structures in the disks. These structures inform us about the properties and spatial distribution of the small dust particles. We present new $H$-band observations of the disk around HD 129590, which display an intriguing arc-like structure in total intensity but not in polarimetry, and propose an explanation for the origin of this arc. Assuming geometric parameters for the birth ring of planetesimals, our model provides the positions of millions of particles of different sizes to compute scattered light images. We demonstrate that if the grain size distribution is truncated or strongly peaks at a size larger than the radiation pressure blow-out size we are able to produce an arc quite similar to the observed one. If the birth ring is radially narrow, given that particles of a given size have similar eccentricities, they will have their apocenters at the same distance from the star. Since this is where the particles will spend most of their time, this results in a "apocenter pile-up" that can look like a ring. Due to more efficient forward scattering this arc only appears in total intensity observations and remains undetected in polarimetric data. This scenario requires sharp variations either in the grain size distribution or for the scattering efficiencies $Q_\mathrm{sca}$. Alternative possibilities such as a wavy size distribution and a size-dependent phase function are interesting candidates to strengthen the apocenter pile-up. The composition and diversity of animal-associated microbial communities are shaped by multiple ecological and evolutionary processes acting at different spatial and temporal scales. Skin microbiomes are thought to be strongly influenced by the environment due to the direct interaction of the host’s skin with the external media. As expected, the diversity of amphibian skin microbiomes is shaped by climate and host habitats, whereas phylogenetic effects appear to be weak. However, the relative strength of phylogenetic and environmental effects on amphibian skin microbiomes remains poorly understood. Here, we analysed sequence data from 1,091 adult salamanders in 41 species to characterise and compare the diversity and composition of skin bacteria. We assessed the relative contribution of climate, host habitat, and host phylogeny to the observed patterns of bacterial diversity. We found that microbial alpha was mainly associated with host habitat and climate, but that microbial beta diversity was more strongly associated with host taxonomy and phylogeny. This phylogeny effect predominantly occurred at intermediate levels of host divergence (0–50 Mya). Our results support the importance of environmental factors shaping the diversity of amphibian skin microbiomes, but also support host phylogenetic history as a major factor shaping these microbial communities.
