The traditional display of elements in the periodic table is convenient for the study of chemistry and physics. However, the atomic number alone is insufficient for training statistical machine learning models to describe and extract composition-structure-property relationships. Here, we assess the similarity and correlations contained within high-dimensional local and distributed representations of the chemical elements, as implemented in an open-source Python package ElementEmbeddings. These include element vectors of up to 200 dimensions derived from known physical properties, crystal structure analysis, natural language processing, and deep learning models. A range of distance measures are compared and a clustering of elements into familiar groups is found using dimensionality reduction techniques. The cosine similarity is used to assess the utility of these metrics for crystal structure prediction, showing that they can outperform the traditional radius ratio rules for the structural classification of AB binary solids., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

We compute the conserved charges associated with the asymptotic symmetries of massless particles by examining their free theory in Minkowski spacetime. We give a procedure to systematically deduce the fall off of the massless fields at spatial infinity and show that it has a universal behaviour when expressed in tangent space. We do this for generic massless particles. We do not impose gauge fixing conditions which allows us to uncover new nonzero charges for the graviton beyond the well-known supertranslation charges. We also compute conserved charges in the dual formulations of certain low spin particles and argue that this leads to an infinite number of new conserved charges., Comment: 25 pages. I describe the Schwarzian behavior of the gravitational field at null infinity under superrotations, to be understood as an \textit{unobservable} gauge artifact. To this end I review the induced geometry of null infinity and the construction of the gauge-invariant News tensor that characterizes gravitational radiation. Diabetes Technology Society hosted its annual Diabetes Technology Meeting on November 4 to November 6, 2021. This meeting brought together speakers to discuss various developments within the field of diabetes technology. Parkinsons disease (PD) is a movement disorder and the second most common neurodengerative disease but despite its relative abundance, there are no clinically accepted neuroimaging biomarkers to make prognostic predictions or differentiate between the similar atypical neurodegenerative diseases Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Abnormal connectivity in circuits including the motor circuit and basal ganglia have been previously shown as early markers of neurodegeneration. Therefore, we postulate the combination patterns of interregional dysconnectivity across the brain can be used to form a patient-specific predictive model of disease state and progression in PD. These models, which employ connectivity calculated from noninvasively measured functional MRI, differentially predict between PD and the atypical lookalikes, predict progression on a disease-specific scale, and predict cognitive decline. Further, we identify the connections most informative for progression and diagnosis. When predicting the one-year progression in the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) and Montreal Cognitive assessment (MoCA), mean absolute errors of 1.8 and 0.6 basis points in the prediction are achieved respectively. A balanced accuracy of 0.68 is attained when distinguishing idiopathic PD versus the lookalikes and healthy controls. We additionally find network components strongly associated with the prognostic and diagnostic tasks, particularly incorporating connections within deep nuclei, motor regions, and the Thalamus. These predictions, using an MRI modality readily available in most clinical settings, demonstrate the strong potential of fMRI connectivity as a prognostic biomarker in Parkinsons disease.

Background and purpose The role of copy number variation (CNV) variation in stroke susceptibility and outcome has yet to be explored. The Copy Number Variation and Stroke (CaNVAS) Risk and Outcome study addresses this knowledge gap. Methods Over 24,500 well-phenotyped IS cases, including IS subtypes, and over 43,500 controls have been identified, all with readily available genotyping on GWAS and exome arrays, with case measures of stroke outcome. To evaluate CNV-associated stroke risk and stroke outcome it is planned to: 1) perform Risk Discovery using several analytic approaches to identify CNVs that are associated with the risk of IS and its subtypes, across the age-, sex- and ethnicity-spectrums; 2) perform Risk Replication and Extension to determine whether the identified stroke-associated CNVs replicate in other ethnically diverse datasets and use biomarker data (e.g. methylation, proteomic, RNA, miRNA, etc.) to evaluate how the identified CNVs exert their effects on stroke risk, and lastly; 3) perform outcome-based Replication and Extension analyses of recent findings demonstrating an inverse relationship between CNV burden and stroke outcome at 3 months (mRS), and then determine the key CNV drivers responsible for these associations using existing biomarker data. Results The results of an initial CNV evaluation of 50 samples from each participating dataset are presented demonstrating that the existing GWAS and exome chip data are excellent for the planned CNV analyses. Further, some samples will require additional considerations for analysis, however such samples can readily be identified, as demonstrated by a sample demonstrating clonal mosaicism. Conclusion The CaNVAS study will cost-effectively leverage the numerous advantages of using existing case-control data sets, exploring the relationships between CNV and IS and its subtypes, and outcome at 3 months, in both men and women, in those of African and European-Caucasian descent, this, across the entire adult-age spectrum.

Category: Hindfoot Introduction/Purpose: Various techniques of surgical detachment for treatment of insertional Achilles tendinopathy have been described, including lateral release, medial release, central tendon splitting (CTS), and complete detachment. Methods: A systematic review of electronic databases was performed, encompassing 17 studies involving 703 patients and 746 feet, to compare outcomes associated with surgical takedown techniques. Results: Observed results include wound complication rates (CTS 2.8%; Lateral 0%; Medial 0.4%; Complete 1.3%), post-operative rupture rates (CTS 0.7%; Lateral 0.8%; Medial 0.7%; Complete 2.6%), rate of revision (CTS 0.4%; Lateral 0.9%; Medial 4.2%; Complete 2.6%), rate of infection (CTS 1.1%; Lateral 1.7%; Medial 3.7%; Complete 6.5%). Lateral takedown group was found to have a statistically significant lower rate of complications compared to the complete takedown group (p=0.0029). Conclusion: In light of these results, it is recommended that patient characteristics such as case specific tendon pathology and calcaneal morphology take precedent in determining the surgical approach to Achilles takedown.

Head motion during functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging acquisition can significantly contaminate the neural signal and introduce spurious, distance-dependent changes in signal correlations. This can heavily confound studies of development, aging, and disease. Previous approaches to suppress head motion artifacts have involved sequential regression of nuisance covariates, but this has been shown to reintroduce artifacts. We propose a new motion correction pipeline using an omnibus regression model that avoids this problem by simultaneously regressing out multiple artifacts using the best performing algorithms to estimate each artifact. We quantitatively evaluate its motion artifact suppression performance against sequential regression pipelines using a large heterogeneous dataset (n=151) which includes high-motion subjects and multiple disease phenotypes. The primary energy sources of mammalian cells are proteins, fats, and sugars that are processed by well-known biochemical mechanisms that have been discovered and studied in 1G (terrestrial gravity). Here we sought to determine how simulated microgravity (sim-µG) impacts both energy and lipid metabolism in oligodendrocytes (OLs), the myelin-forming cells in the central nervous system. We report increased mitochondrial respiration and increased glycolysis 24 hr after exposure to sim-µG. Moreover, examination of the secretome after 3 days' exposure of OLs to sim-µG increased the Krebs cycle (Krebs and Weitzman, ) flux in sim-µG. The secretome study also revealed a significant increase in the synthesis of fatty acids and complex lipids such as 1,2-dipalmitoyl-GPC (5.67); lysolipids like 1-oleoyl-GPE (4.48) were also increased by microgravity. Although longer-chain lipids were not observed in this study, it is possible that at longer time points OLs would have continued moving forward toward the synthesis of lipids that constitute myelin. For centuries, basic developmental biology research has been the pillar of an array of discoveries that have led to clinical applications; we believe that studies using microgravity will open new avenues to our understanding of the brain in health and disease-in particular, to the discovery of new molecules and mechanisms impossible to unveil while in 1G. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Purpose To identify factors associated with outcome after surgical management of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and examine the impact of lymph node (LN) assessment on survival. Patients and Methods From an international multi-institutional database, 449 patients who underwent surgery for ICC between 1973 and 2010 were identified. Clinical and pathologic data were evaluated using uni- and multivariate analyses. Results Median tumor size was 6.5 cm. Most patients had a solitary tumor (73%) and no vascular invasion (69%). Median survival was 27 months, and 5-year survival was 31%. Factors associated with adverse prognosis included positive margin status (hazard ratio [HR], 2.20; P < .001), multiple lesions (HR, 1.80; P = .001), and vascular invasion (HR, 1.59; P = .015). Tumor size was not a prognostic factor (HR, 1.03; P = .23). Patients were stratified using the American Joint Committee on Cancer/International Union Against Cancer T1, T2a, and T2b categories (seventh edition) in a discrete step-wise fashion (P < .001). Lymphadenectomy was performed in 248 patients (55%); 74 of these (30%) had LN metastasis. LN metastasis was associated with worse outcome (median survival: N0, 30 months v N1, 24 months; P = .03). Although patients with no LN metastasis were able to be stratified by tumor number and vascular invasion (N0; P < .001), among patients with N1 disease, multiple tumors and vascular invasion, either alone or together, failed to discriminate patients into discrete prognostic groups (P = .34). Conclusion Although tumor size provides no prognostic information, tumor number, vascular invasion, and LN metastasis were associated with survival. N1 status adversely affected overall survival and also influenced the relative effect of tumor number and vascular invasion on prognosis. Lymphadenectomy should be strongly considered for ICC, because up to 30% of patients will have LN metastasis.
