Three species previously thought to be Chinese endemics from the easternmost Himalayas are reported from Bhutan: Shevockia inunctocarpa Enroth & M.C. Ji and Taiwanobryum yunnanense (Enroth) Enroth comb. nov. of the Neckeraceae, and Calyptothecium acostatum J.X. Luo of the Pterobryaceae. The latter, originally described from Xizang, is also reported from Yunnan, China. Additionally, Noguchiodendron sphaerocarpum (Nog.) Ninh & Pócs is reported for the second time (since 1971) from Bhutan.

Molecular phylogenetic analysis supports the position on the species known as Neckera konoi in the genus Forsstroemia, therefore it is transferred to this genus with a new combination, F. konoi (Broth.) Enroth, Fedosov & Ignatov. Molecular data also confirm the position of F. stricta Laz. described from the Russian Far East in F. producta, a pantropical species. Forstroemia neckeroides is reported from Russia, Primorsky Territory, for the first time.

Recent collections of Heterocladium flaccidum (Schimp.) A.J.E.Sm. in Tunisia and in Georgia (Caucasus) represent the first records of this species both in Africa and Asia. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of samples from France, Great Britain, Tunisia and Georgia placed the species in a maximally supported clade sister to or nested in other species of Heterocladium s.str., i.e., excluding recently segregated Heterocladiella species. This genetic distinction of H. flaccidum from H. heteropterum (Brid.) Schimp., found in separate analyses of ITS and trnS-F markers, strongly supports the specific recognition of H. flaccidum. Representative African and Asian specimens are illustrated and described. Ecological and chorological details are provided.

Four Hypnales mosses from three pleurocarpous families are recorded in Borneo for the first time. They are Neonoguchia auriculata (Copp. ex Thér.) S.H. Lin (Meteoriaceae), Oxyrrhynchium bergmaniae (E.B. Bartram) Huttunen & Ignatov (Brachytheciaceae), Thamnobryum latifolium (Bosch & Sande Lac.) Nieuwl. (Neckeraceae), and Trachycladiella sparsa (Mitt.) M. Menzel (Meteoriaceae). The specimens were collected from Nuluhon Trusmadi Forest Reserve in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Descriptions and illustrations of the four species as well as notes on their distribution and distinguishing characteristics are provided.

Background Many natural compounds have been identified and synthesized by the advancement of bryophytes phytochemistry studies. This work aimed to report the composition of Neckeropsis undulata (Hedw.) Reichardt moss volatiles, sampled in the Combú Island, Belém city, Pará state, Brazil. The volatile concentrate of N. undulata was obtained by a simultaneous distillation-extraction micro-system, analyzed by GC and GC-MS, and reported for the first time. Results Ten compounds were identified in the volatile concentrate, corresponding to 91.6% of the total, being 1-octen-3-ol (35.7%), α-muurolol (21.4%), naphthalene (11.3%), and n-hexanal (10.0 %) the main constituents. Most of the constituents of the N. undulata volatile concentrate have been previously identified in other mosses, and liverworts spread wide in the world. Conclusions 1-Octen-3-ol, n-hexanal, 2-ethylhexanol, isoamyl propionate, and octan-3-one are already known metabolic products obtained from enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, belonging to the large family of minor oxygenated compounds known as oxylipins. The knowledge of the composition of volatiles from moss N. undulata could contribute to the Neckeraceae species’ chemotaxonomy.

This rare moss species is known from three localities in the Silesian Beskid and the Central Pieniny ranges of the Western Carpathians situated in the lower forest belt at an altitude 660–700 m. Recent changes in the moss flora of Poland are briefly discussed and considering all new additions and exclusions it consists of 706 species.

Taiwanobryum undulatifolium (Tixier) W.Z.Ma, Enroth & Shevock is proposed as a new combination, based on the morphological characters of the newly discovered capsules. Lack of cross-striolate ornamentation at the exostome base, long-exserted capsules and mammillose setae are the most important sporophytic characters that support the generic transfer from Neckera. A detailed description and photomicrographs are provided for the sporophyte and perichaetial leaves.

Alleniella besseri, eine schwerpunktmasig europaisch verbreitete Art konnte in Ost-Brandenburg, inmitten der Mittelstadt Frankfurt (Oder) an einem Sekundarstandort (auf Beton einer Eisenbahnunterfuhrung) und damit erstmals im pleistozanen Tiefland Mitteleuropas nachgewiesen werden. Die Art besiedelt in Mitteleuropa ublicher Weise primare Felshabitate auf kalkhaltigem oder intermediarem Gestein (z. B. Kalke, Diabas), tritt kaum sekundar auf und war deshalb — aus edaphischen Grunden — kaum in diesem Gebiet zu erwarten. Der Fundort wird kurz vorgestellt und die Begleitarten am Fundort werden aufgefuhrt. Die Moospflanzen weisen zahlreiche, am Hauptstammchen sitzende, knospenformige Antheridienstande auf.

Anomodon perlingulatus Broth. ex P.C. Wu & Y. Jia and Curvicladium kurzii (Kindberg) Enroth are reported as rheophytic mosses for the first time in China. They were so rarely collected that their habitat preferences remained unknown. The newly obtained specimens have expanded our understanding on their morphological variability and ecological preferences. After re-examining the type specimen held in H, the large size of median cells in A. perlingulatus is confirmed to be a measurement error made in the original description. An updated description is provided. Both A. perlingulatus and C. kurzii can be categorized as facultative rheophytes because of the limited number of specimens collected so far. We anticipate that with a better understanding of potential habitats of both species, that more occurrences in the neighboring provinces are likely to be discovered.

Pioli, A. (2015). Contribution to the inventory of Corsican bryophytes: new data on the presence of some new, rare or uncommon species. Candollea 70: 101–107. In French, English and French abstracts. A bryological study on Corsican wetlands near the Col de Verde, and several surveys of the bryoflora in different regions conducted between 2008 and 2014, allowed to collect rare, uncommon and new species for the island. We report about Barbilophozia attenuate (Mart.) Loeske, Jamesoniella autumnalis (DC.) Steph. (hepatics), Hygroamblystegium tenax (Hedw.) Jenn. and Thamnobryum alopecurum var. gracillimum (Bot.) Dull (mosses), all new for the island. In addition, new localities are added for 5 hepatics and 20 mosses that are rare or uncommon in Corsica. Including these new discoveries, the island's bryoflora now comprises 3 hornworts, 156 liverworts and 419 mosses, for a total of 578 species.

In this work, the essential Oils obtained by hydrodistillation from Neckera complanata (Hedw.) Huebener and Neckera crispa Hedw I (Neckeraceae) were analyzed by GC-FIDTID and GC-MS. Twenty-one compounds in the oil of N. complanata, representing 71.61 % and 1 forty-two compounds in the Oil of N. crispa, representing 82.12 %, were identified. The essential oil of N. crispa was rich in terpenes (58.68 %) with beta-phellandrene (20.00 %), cataphene (10.36 %), gamma-bisabolene-E (5.51 %) and alpha-pinene (3.49 %) as the major components, respectively. 3-Octanone (22.26 :%) and limonene (2.97 %) were the major constituents of the essential oil of N. complanata. The antimicrobial activities of the isolated: essential oils of the mosses Were also investigated. The essential oil of N. complanata showed Only moderate antibacterial-activities against. Staphylococcus aureus,.Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus cereus with 576 mu g/ml, (each): But all the oils showed good antimycotic activity against Candida,albicans with in the range of 573-5761. mu g/mL, respectively. The aim of this work was to characterize the variation in the essential oil: composition of N. complanata and N. crispa grown in Turkey and to identify environmental factors associated With differences in essential oil composition as well as to,evaluate their antimicrobial activity.

Taxiphyllum arcuatum (Bosch & Sande Lac.) S.He is transferred to Isodrepanium based on morphological and molecular data. The systematic position of Isodrepanium is discussed in the present paper. Isodrepanium may not be placed into Neckeraceae; however, its exact systematic position has not been resolved and requires further study.

In English, English and French abstracts.We present a contribution to the knowledge of the Malagasy bryoflora that results from a BRYOTAN workshop organized in September 2018 at the Antananarivo Herbarium (TAN) housed at the Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza, Antananarivo, Madagascar, within the framework of the BRYOTAN project (Bryophytes of TAN). Seven taxa reported here as new for Madagascar were found among the specimens stored in TAN. These findings illustrate the interest of this sort of initiative, the potential richness of the unstudied material in herbaria, and the necessity of exploring regions that are bryologically poorly known within Madagascar.

Some species of Neckeropsis have leaf-like structures that develop on the perichaetia after fertilization of the archegonia. It has been suggested that these structures are either ligulate perichaetial leaves or multiseriate paraphyses. Using light microscopy, a detailed morphological and ontogenetic description was done for the paraphyses in the reproductive branches of N. disticha. Important developmental stages were also described for nine other species of Neckeropsis (N. exserta, N. lepineana, N. nitidula, N. obtusata, N. nano-disticha, N. crinita, N. undulata, N. fimbriata and N. andamana) to document the development of the different types of paraphyses. Transitions between uniseriate and multiseriate paraphyses were documented at different stages in the development of the fertilized branch. Neckera hymenodonta Mull. Hal. is reinstated from the synonymy of N. pennata Hedw. and treated as a distinct species. The morphological differences between the two are elaborated and N. hymenodonta is illustrated in line drawings. It is known from New Zealand and Australia. Neckera pennata var. tasmanica Hampe, N. aurescens Hampe and N. leptotheca Mitt. are synonymized with N. hymenodonta. Neckera pennata is excluded from the New Zealand flora.

Orthostichella Mull. Hal. is a genus of nine species (O. capillicaulis, O. hexasticha, O. longinervis, O. muelleri, O. pachygastrella, O. pandurifolia, O. rigida, O. versicolor and O. welwitschii) found only in tropical and subtropical regions of the New World and Africa. One species (O. hexasticha) is restricted to the Caribbean, one (O. pachygastrella) is found only in the continental regions of the New World, two (O. capillicaulis and O. pandurifolia) are restricted to continental Africa, and one (O. longinervis) is found only in Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. Thamnobryum neckeroides (Hook.) E. Lawton (Neckeraceae) is newly reported from the Czech Republic, Germany, and Italy in Europe, from China, India, and South Korea in Asia, from several states of Eastern North America and from New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere. Description, illustrations, and diagnostic characters of the species, with notes on the habitat and a list of new country or state records, are presented. Thamnium laevinerve Broth. is newly synonymized with Thamnobryum neckeroides; both taxa and Porotrichum obtusatum Lindb. & Arnell are lectotypified.

A new species in the moss family Neckeraceae, Neckera enrothiana M.C. Ji is described and illustrated from the Sichuan Province, China. It is characterized by the combination of relatively small plants, entirely non-undulate and non-decurrent leaves, and by its lacking or very short costa. It is compared with the somewhat similar and widely distributed N. complanata (Hedw.) Hueb. and N. besseri (Lob.) Jur., as well as with the Asian N. goughiana Mitt.

The systematic affinities of three mono typic genera, Kleioweisiopsis Dixon, Pleurozygodontopsis Dixon, and Trigonodietyon Dixon & P. de la Yarde, as well as of the monotypic family Microtheciellaceae (Orthotrichales) are investigated. Examination of morphological characters suggests that Kleioweisiopsis should be transferred to the Ditrichaceae, Pleurozygodontopsis synonymized with Zygodon, and Trigonodietyon transferred to the Grimmiaceae. A key to the genera of the Ditrichaceae with immersed capsules is presented. Mierotheeiella kerrei Dixon, recently placed in its own family, is excluded from the Orthotrichales on the basis of its pleurocarpy, and placed close to the Neckeraceae in the Leucodontales.

Neckera tjibodensis M.Fleisch. from Indonesia (Java) is transferred to Horikawaea Nog. in the Pterobryaceae and the combination H. tjibodensis (M. Fleisch.) M.C. Ji & Enroth is made. Horikawaea redfearnii B.C. Tan & P.-J. Lin is recognized as its taxonomic synonym. The species is illustrated with line drawings and compared with H. nitida Nog. The geographic distributions of both species are presented on a map.

Seven members of the Neckeraceae are recorded from Mulanje Mountain, Malawi, of which four, Homaliodendron piniforme (Brid.) Enroth, Neckera remota Bruch & Schimp. ex C. Mull., Pinnatella minuta (Mitt.) Broth. and Porothamnium variifolioides De Sloover, are first records for Malawi. Porotrichum dentatum Gepp is reinstated as a species distinct from P. madagassum Kiaer ex Besch. and P. molliculum Broth. is synonymised with P. usagarum Mitt. A key is provided to Malawian taxa of the family.

Porothamnium frahmii Enroth sp. nov. (Neckeraceae, Musci), known from Colombia and Peru, is described and illustrated. It is compared with Porotrichum substriatum (Hampe) Mitt., P. longirostre (Hook.) Mitt., Porothamnium filiferum (Mitt.) Fleisch., and P. expansum (Tayl.) Fleisch., with which it might be confused. The sporophyte of Porotrichum substriatum is described for the first time. Porothamnium stipitatum (Mitt.) Touw ex De Sloover, previously known only from Africa, is reported from French Guiana.

A taxonomic study of Pterobryaceae in Brazil indicates the need to lectotypify Orthostichopsis subtenuis, and to consider this taxon under synonymy with Orthostichella pachygastrella (Neckeraceae). Both names are clearly conspecific on the basis of various morphological characters.

Female sexual organs and sporophytes of Taiwanobryum guangdongense (Neckeraceae) are reported for the first time. The relatively short and mammillose setae in the upper part and the ovoid to shortly cylindric capsules resemble those of T. mucronatum .

Taxonomic Results of the BRYOTROP Expedition

Pinnatella mariei (Besch.) Broth. (Neckera mariei Besch.) is transferred from the Neckeraceae to the Leptodontaceae and recognized as the single species of its genus: Caduciella mariei (Besch.) Enroth, gen. et comb. nov. The transfer and recognition of a new genus are based on vegetative characters since the gametoecia and sporophytes are unknown. The Leptodontaceae is tentatively recognized as being composed of the genera Leptodon Mohr, Caduciella Enroth, Cryptoleptodon Ren. & Card., and Forrstroemia Lindb. Lectotypes are selected for Neckera mariei and Pinnatella microptera Fleisch. Caduciella mariei is recorded for the first time for China and Australia.

Neckera praetermissa Enroth & Touw spec. nov. (Neckeraceae) is described from northern Vietnam. It is morphologically closest to the SE Asian N. undulatifolia (Tix.) Enroth, with which it shares the similar, ovate-ligulate and symmetric leaves with coarsely dentate apices, and strongly incrassate and porose leaf cell walls. However, N. undulatifolia has the stems up to 10 cm long and a distinct costa reaching to 5/6 of leaf length, while the stems of N. praetermissa are to c. 3 cm long and the leaves are ecostate or with a weak costa reaching to 1/6 of leaf length at most.

Complutensis 25: 213-219. There are three species of Homalia Brid. in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands: H. trichomanoides, H. lusitanica and H. webbiana. Previous studies on these species have emphasized the leaf dentation and the length of the costa. For this project we carried out a biometric study of the leaves in order to pinpoint their differences. Leaf dentation is the most useful character to separate the species. CUBERO J. En este trabajo se ha realizado un estudio biométrico de los filidios de estas especies para cuantificar sus diferencias. Se ha comprobado que la dentición del filidio es el mejor caracter para su determinación.

An overview about new and previously known records of Pinnatella limbata is given, and a description and drawings of plants collected 2012 in Kodagu (Coorg) District, State of Karnataka, India are provided. Due to the new information of its distribution range it is recommended to remove P. limbata from the IUCN World Red List of Bryophytes.

Porotrichum saotomense Enroth & Shevock (Neckeraceae) is described as a new species from the Republic of Sao Tome & Principe. It is morphologically closest to P. quintasii Broth., differing primarily in the non-complanate and nearly symmetric leaves, much stronger, spinose costa, longer seta and longer exostome teeth and endostome processes. Other additions to the moss flora of Sao Tome & Principe are Homaliodendron piniforme (Brid.) Enroth, Calyptothecium acutifolium (Brid.) Broth. var. breviusculum (Mull. Hal.) Argent, and Symphyodon pygmaeus (Broth.) S. He & Snider. Neckeropsis disticha (Hedw.) Kindb. is new to the island of Sao Tome.

Neckera xizangensis Enroth & M.C. Ji sp. nov . (Neckeraceae, Bryophyta) is described from Xizang (China) and illustrated in line drawings. It morphologically resembles N. denigricans Enroth from Vietnam and Yunnan, but differs especially by the much shorter costa, longer and narrower leaf cells, and the lack of an endostome.

The previously invalidly published combination Homaliodendron fruticosum S. Olsson, Enroth & D. Quandt (Neckeraceae, Bryophyta) is here validated by citing the basionym.

Based on the gametophyte characters, Porothamnium ceylonense Fleisch. is transferred to Thamnobryum Nieuwl. and the combination T. ceylonense (Fleisch.) Enroth is made. The species is lectotypified and line drawings of it are provided.

Porotrichum perplexans Dix. from Central China is reduced to synonymy with Homaliodendron papillosum Broth.

Neckeropsis pocsii Enroth & Magill sp. nov. (Neckeraceae, Musci) from Mayotte, Comoro Islands, is described and illustrated. It resembles N. disticha (Hedw.) Kindb. in habit but differs in the generally wider leaf bases, more strongly serrulate to crenate leaf apices, slightly longer setae rendering the capsules fully exserted, and filiform post-fertilization paraphyses.
