The optimization of interfacial charge transfer is crucial to the design of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this paper we address the dynamics of the charge separation and recombination in liquid-electrolyte and solid-state cells employing a series of amphiphilic ruthenium dyes with varying hydrocarbon chain lengths, acting as an insulating barrier for electron−hole recombination. Dynamics of electron injection, monitored by time-resolved emission spectroscopy, and of charge recombination and regeneration, monitored by transient optical absorption spectroscopy, are correlated with device performance. We find that increasing dye alkyl chain length results in slower charge recombination dynamics to both the dye cation and the redox electrolyte or solid-state hole conductor (spiro-OMeTAD). These slower recombination dynamics are however paralleled by reduced rates for both electron injection into the TiO2 electrode and dye regeneration by the I-/I3- redox couple or spiro-OMeTAD. Kinetic competition between electron recombination with dye cations and dye ground state regeneration by the iodide electrolyte is found to be a key factor for liquid electrolyte cells, with optimum device performance being obtained when the dye regeneration is just fast enough to compete with electron−hole recombination. These results are discussed in terms of the minimization of kinetic redundancy in solid-state and liquid-electrolyte dye-sensitized photovoltaic devices.

A new ruthenium(II) complex, tetrabutylammonium [ruthenium (4-carboxylic acid-4'-carboxylate-2,2'-bipyridine)(4,4'-di(2-(3,6-dimethoxyphenyl)ethenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)(NCS)(2)] (N945H), was synthesized and characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The absorption spectrum of the N945H sensitizer is dominated by metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions in the visible region, with the lowest allowed MLCT bands appearing at 25 380 and 18 180 cm(-1). The molar extinction coefficients of these bands are 34 500 and 18 900 M(-1) cm(-1), respectively, and are significantly higher when compared to than those of the standard sensitizer cis-dithiocyanatobis(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II). An INDO/S and density functional theory study of the electronic and optical properties of N945H and of N945 adsorbed on TiO(2) was performed. The calculations point out that the top three frontier-filled orbitals have essentially ruthenium 4d (t(2g) in the octahedral group) character with sizable contribution coming from the NCS ligand orbitals. Most critically the calculations reveal that, in the TiO(2)-bound N945 sensitizer, excitation directs charge into the carboxylbipyridine ligand bound to the TiO(2) surface. The photovoltaic data of the N945 sensitizer using an electrolyte containing 0.60 M butylmethylimidazolium iodide, 0.03 M I(2), 0.10 M guanidinium thiocyanate, and 0.50 M tert-butylpyridine in a mixture of acetonitrile and valeronitrile (volume ratio = 85:15) exhibited a short-circuit photocurrent density of 16.50 +/- 0.2 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 790 +/- 30 mV, and a fill factor of 0.72 +/- 0.03, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 9.6% under standard AM (air mass) 1.5 sunlight, and demonstrated a stable performance under light and heat soaking at 80 degrees C.

A family of [Pt(II)(diimine)(dithiolate)] complexes of general formula [Pt{X,X'(CO(2)R)(2)-2,2'-bipyridyl}(maleonitriledithiolate)] (where X = 3, 4, or 5 and R = H or Et) have been synthesized, spectroscopically and electrochemically characterized, and attached to a TiO(2) substrate to be tested as solar cell sensitizers. A single-crystal X-ray structure showing a large torsion angle between the bipyridyl rings was determined for [Pt{3,3'(CO(2)Et)(2)-2,2'-bipyridyl}(maleonitriledithiolate)].MeCN. The effect of changing the position of the bipyridyl substituents from 3,3' to 4,4' and 5,5' is discussed with reference to structural and electronic changes seen within the different members of the family of molecules. The first UV/vis/NIR spectroelectrochemical study of complexes of this general formula is discussed. All three complexes (where R = H) were tested as solar cell sensitizers, with the 3,3'-disubstituted bipyridyl complex giving an intermediate dye loading value but superior photovoltaic performance to those of the other two. The performance of this sensitizer is then compared with that of a well-known Ru polypyridyl sensitizer, the ditetrabutylammonium salt of [RuL(2)(NCS)(2)] (L = 2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylato), commonly called N719.

The platinum diimine dithiolate complex, [Pt(2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dicarboxylicacid)(3,4-toluenedithiolate)] ([Pt(5,5′-dcbpy)(tdt)]) and its tetrabutylammonium salt [TBA]2[Pt(5,5′-dcbpy)(tdt)] have been prepared, spectroscopically and electrochemically characterised and attached on to TiO2 substrate to be used as solar cell sensitisers. A single-crystal X-ray structure was obtained for [TBA]2[Pt(5,5′-dcbpy)(tdt)]·EtOH·EtOAc. The effect of the position of the two carboxylic acid substituents on the electrochemistry of the 5,5′-disubstituted complexes is discussed in comparison with the previously reported [Pt(4,4′-dcbpy)(tdt)]. Electrochemical studies show no major change in the HOMO after movement of the carboxylic acid groups, consistent with assignment of the HOMO as largely dithiolate based. Movement of the carboxylic acid groups makes the diimine electronic character and hence the LUMO of the complexes different. Electrochemical studies show a change to lower energy of the LUMO represented by changes in reduction potential of the compound on moving the carboxylic acid substituents from the 4,4′ to the 5,5′ positions. Both [Pt(5,5′-dcbpy)(tdt)] and [TBA]2[Pt(5,5′-dcbpy)(tdt)] have been used as solar cell sensitisers, with the di-TBA salt giving lower dye loading but superior photovoltaic performance. The consequences of tuning the complex through the position of the carboxylic acid groups are discussed.

In this paper we focus upon the electron injection dynamics in complete dye-sensitized nanocrystalline metal oxide solar cells (DSSCs). Electron injection dynamics are studied by transient absorption and emission studies of DSSCs and correlated with device photovoltaic performance and charge recombination dynamics. We find that the electron injection dynamics are dependent upon the composition of the redox electrolyte employed in the device. In a device with an electrolyte composition yielding optimum photovoltaic device efficiency, electron injection kinetics exhibit a half time of 150 ps. This half time is 20 times slower than that for control dye-sensitized films covered in inert organic liquids. This retardation is shown to result from the influence of the electrolyte upon the conduction band energetics of the TiO2 electrode. We conclude that optimum DSSC device performance is obtained when the charge separation kinetics are just fast enough to compete successfully with the dye excited-state decay. These conditions allow a high injection yield while minimizing interfacial charge recombination losses, thereby minimizing "kinetic redundancy" in the device. We show furthermore that the nonexponential nature of the injection dynamics can be simulated by a simple inhomogeneous disorder model and discuss the relevance of our findings to the optimization of both dye-sensitized and polymer based photovoltaic devices.

A [Ru(dcbpy)(2)(NCS)(2)] dye has been chemically modified by the addition of a secondary electron donor moiety, N,N-(di-p-anisylamino)phenoxymethyl. Optical excitation of the modified dye adsorbed to nanocrystalline TiO(2) films shows a remarkably long-lived charge-separated state, with a decay half time of 0.7 s. Semiempirical calculations confirm that the HOMO of the modified dye molecule is localised on the electron donor group. The retardation of the recombination dynamics relative to the unmodified control dye is caused by the increase in the spatial separation of the HOMO orbital from the TiO(2) surface. The magnitude of the retardation is shown to be in agreement with that predicted from the non-adiabatic electron-tunnelling theory.

A novel ligand 4,4'-bis(carboxyvinyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L) and its ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(II)L(2)(NCS)(2)] (K8) were synthesized and characterized by analytical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The performance of the K8 complex as a charge transfer photosensitizer in nanocrystalline TiO(2) based solar cells was studied. When the K8 complex anchored onto a nanocrystalline TiO(2) film, we achieved very efficient sensitization yielding 77 +/-5% incident photon-to-current efficiencies (IPCE) in the visible region using an electrolyte consisting of 0.6 M methyl-N-butyl imidiazolium iodide, 0.05 M iodine, 0.05 M LiI, and 0.5 M 4-tert-butylpyridine in a 50/50 (v/v) mixture of valeronitrile and acetonitrile. Under standard AM 1.5 sunlight, the complex K8 gave a short circuit photocurrent density of 18 +/- 0.5 mA/cm(2), and the open circuit voltage was 640 +/- 50 mV with fill factor of 0.75 +/- 0.05, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 8.64 +/- 0.5%.
