The $e$MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey ($e$MERGE) is an ambitious, multi-tiered extragalactic radio continuum survey being carried out with $e$MERLIN and the VLA at 1.4GHz and 6GHz. Exploiting the unique combination of high sensitivity and high angular resolution provided by radio interferometry, these observations will provide a powerful, obscuration-independent tool for tracing intense star-formation and AGN activity in galaxies out to $z\sim5$. In our first data release (DR1) we present $e$MERGE Tier 1, a 15-arcmin pointing centred on the GOODS-N field, imaged at 1.4GHz with the VLA and $e$MERLIN at $\sim 0.28''$ resolution down to an rms sensitivity of $\sim 1.2\,��$Jy beam$^{-1}$. This unique radio survey -- unrivaled at 1.4GHz in its combination of depth, areal coverage and angular resolution in the pre-SKA era -- allows us to localise and separate extended star-forming regions, nuclear starbursts and compact AGN core/jet systems in galaxies over the past two-thirds of cosmic history, a crucial step in tracing the apparently simultaneous growths of the stellar populations and central black holes in massive galaxies. Science with a Next Generation Very Large Array, ASP Conference Series, Vol. 517. ASP Monograph 7, Radio continuum observations have proven to be a workhorse in our understanding of the star formation process (i.e., stellar birth and death) from galaxies both in the nearby universe and out to the highest redshifts. In this article we focus on how the ngVLA will transform our understanding of star formation by enabling one to map and decompose the radio continuum emission from large, heterogeneous samples of nearby galaxies on greater than or similar to 10 pc scales to conduct a proper accounting of the energetic processes powering it. At the discussed sensitivity and angular resolution, the ngVLA will simultaneously be able to create maps of current star formation activity at similar to 100 pc scales, as well as detect and characterize (e.g., size, spectral shape, density, etc.) discrete Hn regions and supernova remnants on 10 pc scales in galaxies out to the distance of the Virgo cluster. Their properties can then be used to see how they relate to the local and global ISM and star formation conditions. We outline the prospects for performing pioneering radio weak gravitational lensing analyses using observations from a potential forthcoming JVLA Sky Survey program. A large-scale survey with the JVLA can offer interesting and unique opportunities for performing weak lensing studies in the radio band, a field which has until now been the preserve of optical telescopes. In particular, the JVLA has the capacity for large, deep radio surveys with relatively high angular resolution, which are the key characteristics required for a successful weak lensing study. We highlight the potential advantages and unique aspects of performing weak lensing in the radio band. In particular, the inclusion of continuum polarisation information can greatly reduce noise in weak lensing reconstructions and can also remove the effects of intrinsic galaxy alignments, the key astrophysical systematic effect that limits weak lensing at all wavelengths. We identify a VLASS "deep fields" program (total area ~10-20 square degs), to be conducted at L-band and with high-resolution (A-array configuration), as the optimal survey strategy from the point of view of weak lensing science. Such a survey will build on the unique strengths of the JVLA and will remain unsurpassed in terms of its combination of resolution and sensitivity until the advent of the Square Kilometre Array. We identify the best fields on the JVLA-accessible sky from the point of view of overlapping with existing deep optical and near infra-red data which will provide crucial redshift information and facilitate a host of additional compelling multi-wavelength science., Comment: Submitted in response to NRAO's recent call for community white papers on the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS)

We report the deepest radio interferometric observations of the closest Type Ia supernova in decades, SN 2014J, which exploded in the nearby galaxy M 82. These observations represent, together with radio observations of SNe 2011fe, the most sensitive radio studies of a Type Ia SN ever. We constrain the mass-loss rate from the progenitor system of SN 2014J to dot{M} ≲ 7.0EE{-10} msunyr (for a wind speed of 100 kms). Our deep upper limits favor a double-degenerate scenario-involving two WD stars-for the progenitor system of SN 2014J, as such systems have less circumstellar gas than our upper limits. By contrast, most single-degenerate scenarios, i.e., the wide family of progenitor systems where a red giant, main-sequence, or sub-giant star donates mass to a exploding white dwarf, are ruled out by our observations. The evidence from SNe 2011fe and 2014J points in the direction of a double-degenerate scenario for both.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of 99.02 GHz free-free and H40$��$ emission from the centre of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. We calculate electron temperatures of 3700-4500 K for the photoionized gas, which agrees with previous measurements. We measure a photoionizing photon production rate of $(3.2\pm0.2)\times10^{53}$ s$^{-1}$ and a star formation rate of $1.73\pm0.12$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ within the central 20$\times$10 arcsec, which fall within the broad range of measurements from previous millimetre and radio observations but which are better constrained. We also demonstrate that the dust opacities are ~3 dex higher than inferred from previous near-infrared data, which illustrates the benefits of using millimetre star formation tracers in very dusty sources., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The SKA will be a transformational instrument in the study of our local Universe. In particular, by virtue of its high sensitivity (both to point sources and diffuse low surface brightness emission), angular resolution and the frequency ranges covered, the SKA will undertake a very wide range of astrophysical research in the field of nearby galaxies. By surveying vast numbers of nearby galaxies of all types with $\mu$Jy sensitivity and sub-arcsecond angular resolutions at radio wavelengths, the SKA will provide the cornerstone of our understanding of star-formation and accretion activity in the local Universe. In this chapter we outline the key continuum and molecular line science areas where the SKA, both during phase-1 and when it becomes the full SKA, will have a significant scientific impact.

This paper presents the results of the 2009-2010 monitoring sessions of the starburst galaxy M82, obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at 5GHz and e-MERLIN at 6GHz. Combining several 5GHz MERLIN epochs to form a map with 33.0 uJy/bm noise level, 52 discrete sources, mostly supernova remnants and HII regions, are identified. These include three objects which were not detected in the 2002 5GHz MERLIN monitoring session: supernova SN2008iz, the transient source 43.78+59.3, and a new supernova remnant shell. Flux density variations, in the long (1981 to 2010), medium (2002 to 2010) and short (2009 to 2010) term, are investigated. We find that flux densities of SNRs in M82 stay constant in most of the sample (~95%). In addition, aside from SN2008iz and the well-known variable source 41.95+57.5, two sources display short and medium term variations over the period 2009-2010. These sources being among the most compact SNR in M82, these flux density variations could be due to changes in the circumstellar and interstellar medium in which the shocks travel., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

We present first results from the ongoing radio monitoring of SN 2008iz in M82. The VLBI images reveal a shell-like structure with circular symmetry, which expands in a self-similar way. There is strong evidence of a compact component with a steep spectrum at the center of the shell. The expansion curve obtained from our VLBI observations is marginally decelerated (m = 0.89) and can be modeled simultaneously with the available radio light curves. [abridged] We present interferometric CO observations of twelve z~2 submillimetre-faint, star-forming radio galaxies (SFRGs) which are thought to be ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) possibly dominated by warmer dust (T_dust ~> 40 K) than submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) of similar luminosities. Four other CO-observed SFRGs are included from the literature, and all observations are taken at the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) in the compact configuration. Ten of the sixteen SFRGs observed in CO (63%) are detected at >4sigma with a mean inferred molecular gas mass of ~2*10^10 M_sun. SFRGs trend slightly above the local ULIRG L_FIR-L'_CO relation. Since SFRGs are about two times fainter in radio luminosity but exhibit similar CO luminosities to SMGs, this suggests SFRGs are slightly more efficient star formers than SMGs at the same redshifts. SFRGs also have a narrow mean CO line width, 320+-80km/s. SFRGs bridge the gap between properties of very luminous >5*10^12 L_sun SMGs and those of local ULIRGs and are consistent with intermediate stage major mergers. We suspect that more moderate-luminosity SMGs, not yet surveyed in CO, would show similar molecular gas properties to SFRGs. The AGN fraction of SFRGs is consistent with SMGs and is estimated to be 0.3+-0.1, suggesting that SFRGs are observed near the peak phase of star formation activity and not in a later, post-SMG enhanced AGN phase. This CO survey of SFRGs serves as a pilot project for the much more extensive survey of Herschel and SCUBA-2 selected sources which only partially overlap with SMGs. Better constraints on CO properties of a diverse high-z ULIRG population are needed from ALMA to determine the evolutionary origin of extreme starbursts, and what role ULIRGs serve in catalyzing the formation of massive stellar systems in the early Universe., 23 pages, 9 figures; MNRAS accepted

Using extremely deep (rms 3.3 microJy/bm) 1.4GHz sub-arcsecond resolution MERLIN + VLA radio observations of a 8'.5 by 8'.5 field centred upon the Hubble Deep Field North, in conjunction with Spitzer 24 micron data we present an investigation of the radio-MIR correlation at very low flux densities. By stacking individual sources within these data we are able to extend the MIR-radio correlation to the extremely faint (~microJy and even sub-microJy) radio source population. Tentatively we demonstrate a small deviation from the correlation for the faintest MIR sources. We suggest that this small observed change in the gradient of the correlation is the result of a suppression of the MIR emission in faint star-forming galaxies. We have used the very large JVAS/CLASS 8.4-GHz surveys of flat-spectrum radio sources to test the hypothesis that there is a systematic alignment of polarization position angle vectors on cosmological scales of the type claimed by Hutsemekers et al (2005). The polarization position angles of 4290 sources with polarized flux density >=1 mJy have been examined. They do not reveal large-scale alignments either as a whole or when split in half into high-redshift (z >= 1.24) and low-redshift sub-samples. Nor do the radio sources which lie in the specific areas covered by Hutsemekers et al (2005). show any significant effect. We have also looked at the position angles of parsec-scale jets derived from VLBI observations and again find no evidence for systematic alignments. Finally, we have investigated the correlation between the polarization position angle and those of the parsec-scale jets. As expected, we find that there is a tendency for the polarization angles to be perpendicular to the jet angles. We use Virtual Observatory methods to investigate the association between radio and X-ray emission at high redshifts. Fifty-five of the 92 HDF(N) sources resolved by combining MERLIN+VLA data were detected by Chandra, of which 18 are hard enough and bright enough to be obscured AGN. We report the first observation of a transient relativistic jet from the canonical black hole candidate, Cygnus X-1, obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN). The jet was observed in only one of six epochs of MERLIN imaging of the source during a phase of repeated X-ray spectral transitions in 2004 Jan--Feb, and this epoch corresponded to the softest 1.5-12 keV X-ray spectrum. With only a single epoch revealing the jet, we cannot formally constrain its velocity. Nevertheless, several lines of reasoning suggest that the jet was probably launched 0.5-4.0 days before this brightening, corresponding to projected velocities of 0.2c < v_app < 1.6c, and an intrinsic velocity of > 0.3c. We also report the occurrence of a major radio flare from Cyg X-1, reaching a flux density of ~120 mJy at 15 GHz, and yet not associated with any resolvable radio emission, despite a concerted effort with MERLIN. We discuss the resolved jet in terms of the recently proposed 'unified model' for the disc-jet coupling in black hole X-ray binaries, and tentatively identify the 'jet line' for Cyg X-1. The source is consistent with the model in the sense that a steady jet appears to persist initially when the X-ray spectrum starts softening, and that once the spectral softening is complete the core radio emission is suppressed and transient ejecta / shock observed. However, there are some anomalies, and Cyg X-1 clearly does not behave like a normal black hole transient in progressing to the canonical soft / thermal state once the ejection event has happened., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Deep combination radio observations at 1.4GHz with the VLA and MERLIN have imaged a region 10 arcminutes square surrounding the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). Initial studies of the weak radio source population have shown that the proportion of starburst systems increases with decreasing radio flux density with more than 70% of radio sources being starburst in nature at flux densities less than S1.4GHz)~70microJy. We present the results of a second epoch of 18cm global Very Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations, taken on 23 February 2001, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations further investigate the structural and flux evolution of the most compact radio sources in the central region of M82. The two most compact radio objects in M82 have been investigated (41.95+575 and 43.31+592). Using this recent epoch of data in comparison with our previous global VLBI observations and two earlier epochs of European VLBI Network observations we measure expansion velocities in the range of 1500-2000km/s for 41.95+575, and 9000-11000km/s for 43.31+592 using various independent methods. In each case the measured remnant expansion velocities are significantly larger than the canonical expansion velocity (500km/s) of supernova remnants within M82 predicted from theoretical models. We present recent and ongoing results from extremely deep 18 day MERLIN + VLA 1.4GHz observations (rms: 3.3microJy/bm) of an 8.5-by-8.5 arcminute field centred upon the Hubble Deep Field North. This area of sky has been the subject of some of the deepest observations ever made over a wide range of frequencies, from X-rays to the radio. The results presented here use our deep, sub-arcsecond radio imaging of this field to characterise the radio structures of the several hundred GOODS Spitzer MIR sources in this field. These MIR sources primarily trace the luminous starburst sources. We present 5 GHz EVN+MERLIN observations of the nuclear region of the ultra luminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273. These observations confirms the detection, on the mas scale, of two resolved component labelled as N and SE in the literature. We use published VLBA observations at 1.4 GHz, at the same resolution, to derive spectral index information of component N and SE and discuss these findings in relation with different hypothesis (compact starburst or AGN) for the origin of the radio emission., Comment: 4 pages. 6 figures. Several new main line OH masers have been detected in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. Eight masers have been detected to 5 sigma, six of which are new detections. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. Following analysis of the data, another six objects below 5 sigma, but with velocities consistent with the distribution inferred from the more certain detections, have been detected. Despite extensive observational efforts, the brightest sub--mm source in the Hubble Deep Field, HDF850.1, has failed to yield a convincing optical/infrared identification almost 4 years after its discovery. This failure is all the more notable given the availability of supporting multi-frequency data of unparalleled depth, and sub-arcsec positional accuracy for the sub-mm/mm source. Consequently, HDF850.1 has become a test case of the possibility that the most violently star-forming objects in the universe are too red and/or distant to be seen in the deepest optical images. Here we report the discovery of the host galaxy of HDF850.1. This object has been revealed by careful analysis of a new, deep K-prime image of the HDF obtained with the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. Its reality is confirmed by a similar analysis of the HST NICMOS F160W image of the same region. This object is extremely faint (K=23.5), clumpy (on sub-arcsec scales) and very red (I-K > 5.2; H-K = 1.4 +- 0.35). The likelihood that it is the correct identification is strongly reinforced by a reanalysis of the combined MERLIN+VLA 1.4-GHz map of the field which yields a new radio detection of HDF850.1 only 0.1 arcsec from the new near-ir counterpart, and with sufficient positional accuracy to exclude all previously considered alternative optical candidates. We have calculated new confidence limits on the estimated redshift of HDF850.1 and find z = 4.1 +- 0.5. We also calculate that the flux density of HDF850.1 has been boosted by a factor of ~3 through lensing by the intervening elliptical 3-586.0, consistent with predictions that a small but significant fraction of blank-field sub-mm sources are lensed by foreground galaxies. We present a high-resolution 5-GHz radio continuum map of the starburst galaxy NGC 2146 made with MERLIN and the VLA, in a search of radio supernovae and supernova remnants expected to be already produced by the most massive stars in the starburst. At 5 GHz, about 20 point sources were detected earlier by Glendenning & Kronberg (1986) in the central 800 pc of NGC 2146. Our observations with higher sensitivity and resolution made with MERLIN and the VLA confirms the detection of 18 sources, and resolves 7 of them. Additional 1.6-GHz MERLIN observations disclose 9 sources coincident in position with those detected at 5 GHz, which allows us to derive their spectral indices. Only 3 sources have indices consistent with synchrotron emission from supernova remnants or radio supernovae, while the others have very steep inverted spectra. We suggest that the sources with positive spectral index are optically thick ultra-compact and/or ultra-dense HII regions with high electron densities and high emission measures (EM > 10^(7) cm^(-6) pc). Minimum energy requirements indicate that these regions may contain up to 1000 equivalent stars of type O6. When compared with M 82, the galaxy NGC 2146 lacks however a large number of supernova remnants. We suggest that NGC 2146 is experiencing a burst of star formation stronger than that in M 82, but being in a younger phase. We may, however, not exclude an alternative scenario in which strong free-free absorption at 1.6 GHz in foreground ionized gas with very high emission measures (EM > 10^(8) cm^(-6) pc) hides a certain number of supernova remnants, thus rendering for some sources the observed inverted spectra., 10 pages, including 2 figures. We present Space-VLBI observations of the quasar 3C395 which show evidence of the existence of a large bend in the inner parts of its jet, close to the core. This bend would explain why previous Earth-based cm-VLBI observations could not detect the ejection of new moving components, as expected from flux density variability in this source. We present red and blue images of the jet of the quasar 3C273 obtained with the WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope as well as a new radio map made with the MERLIN array. The images are of significantly better quality than that of previous data. The two maps are aligned to an accuracy of 0.020$''$; this accuracy is achieved because both the quasar and the jet are contained in both the radio and optical images. The start of the optical jet is marked by an elongated knot which appears identical at radio and optical wavelengths. Other knots in the optical jet correspond to narrow oblique features within the radio outline. The total width of the smooth emission in the optical jet is~$0.7''$; the FWHM of the optical knots is~$0.3''$. We investigate the nature of the compact, and possibly variable nuclear radio source in the centre of WISE J0716-19, the proposed host galaxy of fast radio burst, FRB 150418. We observed WISE J0716-19 at 5.0 GHz with the European VLBI Network four times between 2016 March 16 and June 2. At three epochs, we simultaneously observed the source with e-MERLIN at the same frequency. We detected a compact source in the EVN data in each epoch with a significance up to ~8sigma. The four epochs yielded consistent results within their uncertainties, for both peak surface intensity and positions. The mean values for these quantities are I_peak = (115+-9) ��Jy/beam and r.a. = 07:16:34.55496(7), dec. = -19:00:39.4754(8), respectively. The e-MERLIN data provided ~3-5sigma detections, at a position consistent with those of the EVN data. The presence of emission on angular scales intermediate between the EVN and e-MERLIN is consistent with being null. The brightness temperature of the EVN core is Tb~10^8.5K, close to the value required by Akiyama & Johnson (2016) to explain the radio properties of WISE J0716-19 in terms of interstellar induced short-term variability. Our observations provide direct, independent evidence of the existence of a nuclear compact source in WISE J0716-19, a physical scenario with no evident connection with FRB 150418.
