We present a number of new physical systems that may be addressed using methods of time dependent transformation. A recap of results available for two-state systems is given, with particular emphasis on the AC stark effect. We give some results that are not well known, including the full solution for a two state system in a static electric field with arbitrary direction. Connection with established theorems in time optimal quantum control is given, and a full discussion outlines some advanced results in matrix calculus. In particular, we derive a set of matrix gates relevant to quantum information theory and computation using time optimal unitary operators, and define the hyperbolic equivalent of the quantum brachistochrone problem., Comment: 11 pages

An analysis of the motion of a relativistic electron under a linear constraint in four dimensions is presented. Interesting results are given that show that the state of the electron is well defined under the formalism of time optimal quantum state control. We establish compact mechanisms for achieving time dependent unitary evolution, and present new calculation methods for time-ordered exponential operators. A powerful modification of the brachistochrone technique is presented that allows solution of a class of problems via matrix decomposition of the Hamiltonian. These techniques allow us to arrive at a series of solutions for quantum systems that have readily accessible physical realisations. We contrast the output of the theory when constrained to a relativistic space-time to that of other physical systems of lower dimensionality. This study examined the effectiveness of Introductory Flight Screening (IFS) for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps student pilots. It compared a non-IFS group to an IFS-complete group to determine if IFS had any effect on Primary drop-on-request (DOR) and flight-failure (FF) attrition. It then examined the return on investment (ROI) of the IFS program utilizing T-34 flying-hour costs, active-duty costs, and opportunity cost-savings of IFS-screened students who did not enter undergraduate pilot training. Results suggest that IFS did not have an effect on the DOR rate and may have produced the undesired effect of delaying the DOR-student's decision until later in the syllabus. IFS had a desirable effect on the FF attrition rate with no significant change in T-34 flight hours per FF. The combined Primary DOR and FF rate, although significantly lower, did not achieve expectations. The ROI analysis was completed with both composite-pay costs and Individual Account costs. In both cases, the IFS-investment costs significantly outweighed the IFS savings resulting in a net loss and an undesirable ROI. Benzoquinoid ansamycins, such as herbimycin A (HA) and geldanamycin (GA), are antibiotics that exhibit anti-tumor effects. These compounds have been shown to result in the intracellular depletion of important growth signaling molecules. Recently, GA has been shown to bind tightly to Hsp90, thereby implicating Hsp90 as a possible chaperone for those signaling molecules adversely affected by the benzoquinoid ansamycins. Here we have investigated the effects of HA and GA on the synthesis, maturation and stability of different protein tyrosine kinases. Exposing cells to either compound blocked normal maturation of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor, and pp60(v-src). We show that only the nascent forms of the EGF and PDGF receptors are degraded under these conditions. Once the newly synthesized receptors had been translocated into the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, addition of the drugs no longer affected their stability. For the cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase, pp60(v-src), both the nascent as well as the mature forms of the protein were degraded in cells treated with the drugs. We discuss these observations as they pertain to the possible role of Hsp90 as a substrate-specific molecular chaperone, perhaps involved in the maturation and/or stability of proteins important for growth control.
