Current pest management techniques would benefit from understanding the behavioural rhythms of the target pest and its body temperature, a critical aspect not well studied and potentially limiting the effectiveness of biopesticides under natural conditions. This study aims 1) to understand under natural conditions the behavioural patterns of different stages of hoppers and adults of Locusta migratoria manilensis and 2) to identify the environmental factors modulating their body temperature through field observation. We carried out an intensive field sampling in two of the main locust breeding regions in China, recording the body temperature (day and night), morphological traits (stage, sex and size) and microhabitat of 953 individuals. The results revealed that locusts preferred the ground as their main activity subhabitat, particularly for hoppers. Adults tended to move upper in the reed canopy at two peaks (10-11 h and 14-15 h). Locusts body temperature during daytime increased with development stage and size, while the opposite pattern occurred during night time. Entompathogenic fungi are more effective if the body temperature of the target pest is in a proper range without too high or too low. Application of biopesticides should focus on younger locusts spraying in the morning or at dusk as the locusts have lower body temperatures.

AIM This study was primarily aimed at assessing the effect that specific periodontal phenotypic characteristics have on alveolar ridge remodeling after tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients in need of extraction of a non-molar maxillary tooth were enrolled. Baseline phenotypic characteristics (i.e., mid-facial and mid-palatal soft tissue and bone thickness, and supracrestal soft tissue height [STH]) were recorded upon extraction. A set of clinical, digital imaging (linear and volumetric), and patient-reported outcomes were assessed over a 14-week healing period. RESULTS A total of 78 subjects were screened. Forty-two subjects completed the study. Linear and volumetric bone changes, as well as, vertical linear soft tissue and alveolar ridge volume (soft tissue contour) variations, were indicative of a marked dimensional reduction of the alveolar ridge over time. Horizontal facial and palatal soft tissue thickness gain was observed. Accurate and timely detection of plant stress is essential for yield protection, allowing better-targeted intervention strategies. Recent advances in remote sensing and deep learning have shown great potential for rapid non-invasive detection of plant stress in a fully automated and reproducible manner. However, the existing models always face several challenges: 1) computational inefficiency and the misclassifications between the different stresses with similar symptoms; and 2) the poor interpretability of the host-stress interaction. In this work, we propose a novel fast Fourier Convolutional Neural Network (FFDNN) for accurate and explainable detection of two plant stresses with similar symptoms (i.e. Wheat Yellow Rust And Nitrogen Deficiency). Specifically, unlike the existing CNN models, the main components of the proposed model include: 1) a fast Fourier convolutional block, a newly fast Fourier transformation kernel as the basic perception unit, to substitute the traditional convolutional kernel to capture both local and global responses to plant stress in various time-scale and improve computing efficiency with reduced learning parameters in Fourier domain; 2) Capsule Feature Encoder to encapsulate the extracted features into a series of vector features to represent part-to-whole relationship with the hierarchical structure of the host-stress interactions of the specific stress. AIM To evaluate the healing outcomes in non-molar post-extraction sockets filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral with collagen (DBBM-C) as a function of time. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients in need of non-molar tooth extraction were randomly allocated into one of three groups according to the total healing time (A - 3 months; B - 6 months; C - 9 months). The effect of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) therapy via socket filling using DBBM-C and socket sealing with a porcine collagen matrix (CM) was assessed based on a panel of clinical, digital, histomorphometric, implant-related, and patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS A total of 42 patients completed the study (n=14 in each group). Histomorphometric analysis of bone core biopsies obtained at the time of implant placement showed a continuous increase in the proportion of mineralized tissue with respect to non-mineralized tissue, and a decrease in the proportion of remaining xenograft material over time. All volumetric bone and soft tissue contour assessments revealed a dimensional reduction of the alveolar ridge overtime affecting mainly the facial aspect. Linear regression analyses revealed that baseline buccal bone thickness is a strong predictor of bone and soft tissue modeling. Ancillary bone augmentation at the time of implant placement was needed in 16.7% of the sites (A:2; B:1; C:4). Patient-reported discomfort and wound healing index scores progressively decreased over time and was similar across groups. CONCLUSIONS Healing time influences the proportion of tissue compartments in non-molar post-extraction sites filled with DBBM-C and sealed with a CM. A variable degree of alveolar ridge atrophy, affecting mainly the facial aspect, occurs even after performing ARP therapy. Por ello, en este trabajo de fin de grado se explicará en qué consiste el organigrama la empresa, con la finalidad de comprender y explicar los cambios de estructura que sufre una empresa desde su constitución como empresario individual hasta su consolidación como multinacional. Como objetivos específicos destacan los siguientes: • Conocer en que consiste la estructura organizativa de la empresa y como esta establece un control y sistematiza el trabajo y la comunicación a través del ordenamiento jerárquico. • Analizar como se construye el organigrama en función de las necesidades de las compañías. • Estudiar los principales modelos organizativos que existen y su actualización hacia una sociedad globalizada. • Profundizar en los cambios en la estructura de la empresa a medida que va a aumentando de tamaño y volumen. Para cumplir con los objetivos propuestos se usará una metodología combinada. Comenzando por una revisión de la literatura sobre organización de empresas, así como la consulta de informes divulgativos y recursos online, como organigramas y artículos, a fin de conocer cómo funciona estructura de la empresa, su ordenamiento y los principales modelos que existen en la estructuración de sociedades. The inductive biases of trained neural networks are difficult to understand and, consequently, to adapt to new settings. We study the inductive biases of linearizations of neural networks, which we show to be surprisingly good summaries of the full network functions. Inspired by this finding, we propose a technique for embedding these inductive biases into Gaussian processes through a kernel designed from the Jacobian of the network. In this setting, domain adaptation takes the form of interpretable posterior inference, with accompanying uncertainty estimation. This inference is analytic and free of local optima issues found in standard techniques such as fine-tuning neural network weights to a new task. We develop significant computational speed-ups based on matrix multiplies, including a novel implementation for scalable Fisher vector products. Our experiments on both image classification and regression demonstrate the promise and convenience of this framework for transfer learning, compared to neural network fine-tuning. We propose a new probabilistic method for unsupervised recovery of corrupted data. Given a large ensemble of degraded samples, our method recovers accurate posteriors of clean values, allowing the exploration of the manifold of possible reconstructed data and hence characterising the underlying uncertainty. In this setting, direct application of classical variational methods often gives rise to collapsed densities that do not adequately explore the solution space. Instead, we derive our novel reduced entropy condition approximate inference method that results in rich posteriors. We test our model in a data recovery task under the common setting of missing values and noise, demonstrating superior performance to existing variational methods for imputation and de-noising with different real data sets. We further show higher classification accuracy after imputation, proving the advantage of propagating uncertainty to downstream tasks with our model., Comment: 8+12 pages

El Trabajo Fin de Máster que se propone a continuación tiene como objetivo la evaluación y comparativa de la gestión de Responsabilidad Social (RS) en el sector hotelero español a través del análisis de su alcance en algunas de las compañías más representativas del sector, para lo cual se hará uso de la Metodología IPSUM de evaluación, implementación y mejora continua de la RS, así como de la aplicación informática que permite su implementación. Sabiendo cuál es el objetivo del Trabajo, resulta necesario contestar a una serie de cuestiones que surgen con el planteamiento del mismo como por ejemplo por qué es interesante la RS, por qué ha optado por el sector hotelero para este estudio, qué es la plataforma IPSUM o en qué consiste la evaluación que se va a llevar a cabo. La RS es un concepto amplio y complejo que se puede definir como un proceso a través del cual las empresas asumen la responsabilidad por las consecuencias económicas, sociales y medioambientales de su actividad, con rendición de cuentas en estos tres ámbitos y ejerciendo diálogo con los grupos interés (stakeholders) afectados por dicha actividad. Es un ejercicio totalmente voluntario y que las organizaciones asumen por propia conformidad. El origen de este concepto se remonta a principios del siglo XIX y su evolución ha sido constante en el tiempo. Muchos han sido los hitos y organismos creados sobre las bases de la RS y han favorecido a que adquiera con el paso del tiempo una relevancia cada vez mayor. Entre ellos cabe destacar el Pacto Mundial de Naciones Unidas y la Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Respondiendo a la primera pregunta expuesta y apoyado en la opinión pública en relación con este concepto, la RS se ha convertido en un elemento fundamental a la hora de garantizar el éxito de las organizaciones en el medio y largo plazo. Su buena gestión puede suponer una enorme ventaja competitiva y por tanto resulta interesante el estudio de su aplicación y gestión en cualquier organización. El sector escogido para estudiar y analizar la gestión de la RS ha sido el sector hotelero español. El turismo es un sector estratégico de la economía a nivel mundial y es considerado como uno de los pilares fundamentales de la economía en nuestro país. Es por ello que el sector hotelero, estrechamente ligado a la actividad turística, adquiere una gran importancia para España. A escala global, el turismo representa el 10,4% de PIB mundial y es el tercer mayor sector de exportaciones en todo el planeta, por delante de la automoción y de los productos agroalimentarios. Este considerable peso sobre la economía mundial trae como consecuencia un importante incremento del empleo debido a que es un sector intensivo en mano de obra de tal forma que es capaz de generar uno de cada diez empleos en todo el mundo. En el año 2018, el peso de la actividad turística en España fue del 12,3% del PIB y el empleo relacionado con el ámbito turístico supuso el 12,7% del total. Además, nuestro país dispone de una privilegiada posición de liderazgo en el ámbito turístico, recibe alrededor de 80 millones de turistas internacionales cada año, es el segundo destino mundial por número de visitantes y el segundo país con mayores ingresos derivados del turismo. En cuanto el sector hotelero, es considerado como pieza clave dentro del turismo debido a que el alojamiento es uno de los factores que mayores ingresos aporta dentro de esta actividad, siendo el sector hotelero origen de una importante parte de ellos. En el año 2019, las pernoctaciones en establecimientos hoteleros llegaron a la cifra de 343,1 millones, un 0,9% más respecto a 2018. Además, el grado de ocupación fue del 60,2% con respecto al total de plazas hoteleras ofertadas, un porcentaje similar al del año anterior. Son muchas las iniciativas de RS dentro del sector hotelero tanto a nivel nacional e internacional debido a que delimitar y aplicar la RS se ha convertido para la mayoría de las empresas en una manera de generar valor, confianza inversora y excelencia empresarial. En nuestro país la implementación de los principios de Responsabilidad Social se encuentra fase de desarrollo pero, a pesar de ello, España es actualmente uno de los países donde más compromisos formales se están tomando por parte de las empresas hoteleras (adhesión a pactos y convenios internacionales como el Código Ético Mundial para el Turismo de la OMT, el Pacto Mundial o el Código ECPAT) y existe una creciente cantidad de compañías hoteleras que destaca por tener ya un largo camino recorrido en la puesta en práctica de políticas de RS. Todo ello afianza la elección del sector hotelero para realizar este TFM, ya que, además de ser un sector atractivo e interesante, resulta esencial en la economía española, existiendo un evidente un compromiso entre el sector y las acciones de responsabilidad social. IPSUM es una metodología de evaluación, implantación y mejora continua de la RS que, dada su flexibilidad, es aplicable a cualquier tipo de organización, independientemente de su tamaño o el sector en el que opere. Está basada en el concepto de la Triple Bottom Line, que sostiene que el desarrollo sostenible de cualquier organización se apoya en tres pilares fundamentales: el económico-estratégico, el social y el medioambiental. Además, se encuentra alineado con las pautas establecidas por las grandes iniciativas mundiales en este marco. Para el análisis del sector, se establece un criterio de selección de las compañías basado en la elección de las 4 cadenas hoteleras con mayor volumen de facturación en el año 2012, año en que se llevó a cabo la primera evaluación. Esto permite analizar la evolución en la gestión de la RS de las cuatro organizaciones desde el momento del primer estudio hasta el actual. Se ha considerado oportuno que la muestra a evaluar sea de cuatro compañías debido a que aumentar esa cantidad en más unidades excedería la planificación de tiempo y esfuerzo dedicados a la realización del Trabajo, no aportando un valor significativo en relación con dicho esfuerzo en la comparativa final. Tras la selección, se recopila todo el contenido asociado a la RS a nivel cualitativo que la empresa tiene publicado en abierto a través de las páginas web corporativas. Obtenida la documentación, se descompone toda la información encontrada de forma exhaustiva y detallada, elaborándose un listado cualitativo para facilitar su correspondencia con los niveles de los indicadores de IPSUM. Una vez se tiene toda la información de cada compañía segregada y organizada, se accede a la plataforma informática de IPSUM y se validan los niveles de cada uno de los indicadores, hasta un total de 54 indicadores con 4 niveles cada uno. Completando el proceso de evaluación, la herramienta genera un informe detallado del nivel de gestión y cumplimiento de RS de la compañía analizada. Finalmente, se analizan los resultados obtenidos y se realiza la comparativa entre las compañías. Además, se elabora un estudio de la evolución de la gestión de la RS comparando los resultados actuales con los obtenidos en la anterior evaluación. Con lo expuesto anteriormente se concluye que el objetivo del TFM está totalmente cumplido. Se ha estudiado en profundidad la RS, apreciando su necesaria implementación en a todos los niveles de cualquier organización, se ha analizado el sector hotelero español y se han documentado evidencias de la relación del sector con la RS. Finalmente se ha evaluado la gestión de la RS de las organizaciones más importantes del sector y se han establecido comparativas entre ellas y con sus resultados anteriores, comprendiendo cuales son los puntos fuertes y aquellos en los que se debe mejorar. Este TFM se ha desarrollado como una herramienta de consultoría y auditoría por lo que, una vez alcanzado su objetivo, el fin de este es evaluar cómo las compañías podrían incrementar su competitividad a través de la responsabilidad social.

We present a novel method for automated identification of putative cell types from single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data. By iteratively applying a machine learning approach to an initial clustering of gene expression profiles of a given set of cells, we simultaneously identify distinct cell groups and a weighted list of feature genes for each group. The feature genes, which are differentially expressed in the particular cell group, jointly discriminate the given cell group from other cells. Each such group of cells corresponds to a putative cell type or state, characterised by the feature genes as markers. To benchmark this approach, we use expert-annotated scRNA-seq datasets from a range of experiments, as well as comparing to existing cell annotation methods, which are all based on a pre-existing reference. We show that our method automatically identifies the 'ground truth' cell assignments with high accuracy. Moreover, our method, Single Cell Clustering Assessment Framework (SCCAF) predicts new putative biologically meaningful cell-states in published data on haematopoiesis and the human cortex. SCCAF is available as an open-source software package on GitHub (https://github.com/SCCAF/sccaf) and as a Python package index and has also been implemented as a Galaxy tool in the Human Cell Atlas.

We propose a meta-learning approach that learns from multiple tasks in a transductive setting, by leveraging the unlabeled query set in addition to the support set to generate a more powerful model for each task. To develop our framework, we revisit the empirical Bayes formulation for multi-task learning. The evidence lower bound of the marginal log-likelihood of empirical Bayes decomposes as a sum of local KL divergences between the variational posterior and the true posterior on the query set of each task. We derive a novel amortized variational inference that couples all the variational posteriors via a meta-model, which consists of a synthetic gradient network and an initialization network. Each variational posterior is derived from synthetic gradient descent to approximate the true posterior on the query set, although where we do not have access to the true gradient. Our results on the Mini-ImageNet and CIFAR-FS benchmarks for episodic few-shot classification outperform previous state-of-the-art methods. Anomaly detection at scale is an extremely challenging problem of great practicality. When data is large and high-dimensional, it can be difficult to detect which observations do not fit the expected behaviour. Recent work has coalesced on variations of (random) $k$\emph{d-trees} to summarise data for anomaly detection. However, these methods rely on ad-hoc score functions that are not easy to interpret, making it difficult to asses the severity of the detected anomalies or select a reasonable threshold in the absence of labelled anomalies. To solve these issues, we contextualise these methods in a probabilistic framework which we call the Mondrian \Polya{} Forest for estimating the underlying probability density function generating the data and enabling greater interpretability than prior work. In addition, we develop a memory efficient variant able to operate in the modern streaming environments. Our experiments show that these methods achieves state-of-the-art performance while providing statistically interpretable anomaly scores.

Objective. Attempts have been made to improve nerve conduits in peripheral nerve reconstruction. We investigated the potential therapeutic effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal cells (ASCs) and ghrelin (GHR), a neuropeptide with neuroprotective, trophic, and developmental regulatory actions, on peripheral nerve regeneration in a model of severe nerve injury repaired with nerve conduits. Material and methods. The right sciatic nerves of 24 male Wistar rats were 10-mm transected unilaterally and repaired with Dl-lactic-epsilon-caprolactone conduits. Rats were then treated locally with saline, ASCs, or GHR. At 12 weeks post-surgery, we assessed limb function by measuring ankle stance angle and percentage muscle mass reduction and evaluated the histopathology, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructure, and morphometry of myelinated fibers. Main Results. Rats receiving GHR or ASCs showed no significant increased functional recovery in ankle stance angle (p=0.372) but a higher nerve area (p=0.015), myelin area (p=0.046) and number of myelinated fibers (p=0.012) in the middle and distal segments of operated sciatic nerves in comparison to saline-treated control animals. Conclusion. We explain some key features of quantum computing via three heuristics and apply them to argue that a deep understanding of quantum computing is unlikely to be helpful to address current bottlenecks in Artificial Intelligence Alignment. Our argument relies on the claims that Quantum Computing leads to compute overhang instead of algorithmic overhang, and that the difficulties associated with the measurement of quantum states do not invalidate any major assumptions of current Artificial Intelligence Alignment research agendas. En el texto presente, se dan a conocer los planteamientos generales de una investigación, dedicada al estudio del Arte Rupestre Postpaleolítico y su relación iconográfica con el nacimiento de los primeros sistemas de escritura en la Península Ibérica. El Arte Prehistórico, no ha estado en el debate científico de los estudios lingüísticos, debido a la ausencia de una investigación multidisciplinar entre filólogos y prehistoriadores. El estudio revela que la simbología prehistórica desarrollada por los pueblos indígenas durante varios milenios, desde el Neolítico hasta la Edad del Hierro I, tuvo un papel muy importante en el origen de los signarios paleohispánicos de la sociedad tartesia y los pueblos prerromanos. En el contenido de este artículo, se exponen sus conexiones culturales, cronológicas, grafológicas e iconográficas relacionadas con la invención de la escritura fonética en la Hispania Antigua. In this text, a general approach of a research case dedicated to the study of Postpaleolithic Rock Art and its iconographic links with the birth of the first writing systems in the Iberian Peninsula is presented. Prehistoric art has not been considered by scientific discussion of linguistic studies, due to the absence of multidisciplinary research between philologists and prehistorians. This study reveals that the prehistoric symbolism developed by indigenous peoples for several millennia, from the Neolithic until the Iron Age I, played a very important role in the origin of the Paleohispanic signaries of the Tartessian society and the pre-Roman peoples. In this article, their cultural, chronological, graphological and iconographic connections related to the invention of phonetic writing in ancient Hispania are explained.

En el capítulo 1 se describe la formación de complejos de Ni(II) estabilizados por un ligando de tipo pinza bis(fosfino)borilo, o PBP, de entre los cuales un complejo de tipo hidruro es capaz de activar dióxido de carbono de forma instantánea a temperatura ambiente. Asimismo, se describe la hidrosililación selectiva de CO2 al nivel de formaldehído (bis(silil)acetal) en presencia del ácido de Lewis tris(pentafluorofenil)borano y silanos como agentes reductores. En el capítulo 2 de esta Tesis Doctoral se describe la síntesis y aislamiento de un complejo de Ni(II) que contiene dos ligandos de tipo borilo, los cuales se orientan en una posición mutuamente trans. La obtención de cristales de esta especie permitió llevar a cabo un detallado análisis estructural, y además se demuestra el papel de estos compuestos como intermedios reactivos en procesos catalíticos de borilación deshidrogenante de estirenos, obteniéndose derivados mono- y di-borilados como productos. En el capítulo 3 se utilizan ligandos del tipo carbeno N-heterocíclico para estabilizar complejos de Pt(II), los cuales se utilizan como ácidos de Lewis para activar silanos. Estudios exploratorios con derivados que contienen el carbeno ItBu condujeron a la utilización de derivados ligeramente menos voluminosos. Para ello se sintetizó el carbeno mixto ItBuiPr, el cual contiene grupos terc-butilo e iso-propilo. Tras evaluar la interacción entre los complejos resultantes de Pt(II) y diversos silanos, se consiguieron aislar varios complejos sigma-silano catiónicos de Pt(II), y su estructura cristalina pudo ser obtenida mediante difracción de rayos X. Además de un detallado análisis estructural, se demostró el papel de estas especies como intermedios reactivos en la formación de enlaces C−Si y/o Pt−Si. De manera adicional, se sintetizaron diferentes complejos de tipo mono y di-deuteruro utilizando diversos ligandos NHC para estudiar su comportamiento como rotores moleculares, en colaboración con los profesores Ulrich Fekl y Robert W. Schurko, de las Universidades de Toronto y Windsor, respectivamente. En el capítulo 4, se emplean algunos de los complejos de Pt(II) que contienen carbenos del tipo ItBu (descritos en el capítulo 3) como catalizadores en procesos de hidrosililación de dióxido de carbono y acoplamiento deshidrogenante de silanos y aminas. En el primer caso, la reducción de CO2 con silanos catalizada por Pt(II) dio como resultado la obtención selectiva de sililformiatos a temperatura ambiente, mientras que en el segundo caso se consiguió la síntesis selectiva de mono- y disilazanos a temperatura ambiente con cargas de catalizador extremadamente bajas, utilizando en varios casos cargas del orden de partes por millón. Deep neural networks have achieved remarkable success in various challenging tasks. However, the black-box nature of such networks is not acceptable to critical applications, such as healthcare. In particular, the existence of adversarial examples and their overgeneralization to irrelevant, out-of-distribution inputs with high confidence makes it difficult, if not impossible, to explain decisions by such networks. In this paper, we analyze the underlying mechanism of generalization of deep neural networks and propose an ($n$, $k$) consensus algorithm which is insensitive to adversarial examples and can reliably reject out-of-distribution samples. Furthermore, the consensus algorithm is able to improve classification accuracy by using multiple trained deep neural networks. To handle the complexity of deep neural networks, we cluster linear approximations of individual models and identify highly correlated clusters among different models to capture feature importance robustly, resulting in improved interpretability. Motivated by the importance of building accurate and interpretable prediction models for healthcare, our experimental results on an ICU dataset show the effectiveness of our algorithm in enhancing both the prediction accuracy and the interpretability of deep neural network models on one-year patient mortality prediction. The emerging literature has recently reported an alarming increase in peri-implantitis. This disease is typically described as the result of an imbalance between host response and bacterial load, supported by gram-negative anaerobic microflora. The current literature on the prevention and treatment of peri-implantitis does not allow for the extraction of applicable clinical information. In fact, the lack of efficacy of the current treatment methods may be a result of insufficient understanding of the biology. The aim of this position paper was to try to reevaluate the etiopathogenesis of peri-implantitis, highlighting the principal clinically induced triggering factors of the disease. The consensus conference provided strong evidence to suggest that a different microbiologic flora (slightly different from that collected around teeth affected by periodontitis) could support peri-implantitis. However, the evidence to support a consensus statement regarding clinically triggering factors (surgical, prosthetic, and biomechanical) for peri-implantitis is only of moderate strength (cohort studies or consistent results from long-term, well-populated case series). Expert opinion led the consensus group to support the following: rectifying the number of peri-implant inflammatory situations caused by surgical, restorative, or material complications may lower the number of infections to a more realistic figure and may suggest different and more appropriate treatment plans. At the same time, it can be stated that implant material, shape and surface characteristics, procedures and biomaterials used for bone augmentation, and incorrect prosthetic procedures and biomechanical plans could also be risk factors for the occurrence and progression of periimplantitis.

In complex transfer learning scenarios new tasks might not be tightly linked to previous tasks. Approaches that transfer information contained only in the final parameters of a source model will therefore struggle. Instead, transfer learning at a higher level of abstraction is needed. We propose Leap, a framework that achieves this by transferring knowledge across learning processes. We associate each task with a manifold on which the training process travels from initialization to final parameters and construct a meta-learning objective that minimizes the expected length of this path. Our framework leverages only information obtained during training and can be computed on the fly at negligible cost. We demonstrate that our framework outperforms competing methods, both in meta-learning and transfer learning, on a set of computer vision tasks. El territorio actual de Andalucía cuenta con un excelente conjunto de yacimientos rupestres prehistóricos de cuevas y abrigos naturales que contienen grafías paleolíticas y postpaleolíticas. Los estudios realizados en esta zona geográfica tienen una gran tradición historiográfica, desde que se puso en evidencia los primeros descubrimientos de arte rupestre realizados por Henri Breuil, Hugo Obermaier y W. Verner en la Cueva de la Pileta. Los trabajos científicos de numerosos equipos revisando las estaciones rupestres y descubriendo nuevos hallazgos, han ido desvelando el maravilloso legado cultural y patrimonial que nuestros ancestros fueron configurando en el territorio durante miles de años. La investigación de estos hallazgos y su puesta en valor han conseguido poner al arte rupestre del sur de la Península Ibérica en el mismo nivel de reconocimiento que las regiones clásicas del Paleolítico Superior Europeo. En el asunto que nos ocupa, exponemos un trabajo sobre el origen y el desarrollo de la imaginería prehistórica desde el estudio de las formaciones económico-sociales, que en el caso del Paleolítico Superior, son las sociedades pretribales compuestas en su organización social por cazadores, recolectores y pescadores. El arte, producto de sus modos de vida y de producción, lo entendemos como un medio de expresión ideológica de sus modos de vida humanos y de su conciencia social. Desde la propuesta teórica y metodológica de la Arqueología Social, en el trabajo realizamos una exposición de los procesos históricos que acontecieron en la Prehistoria en el sur de la Península Ibérica y que estuvieron vinculados con el nacimiento y desarrollo del arte, en las sociedades de bandas del Paleolítico Superior. Además se exponen los procesos de transformación estilística sucedidos en el Epipaleolítico que culminaron en el Neolítico, con el Arte Esquemático Típico, debido a los cambios en los modos de vida y de producción que dieron lugar a la formación económico-social tribal. En la investigación abordamos diferentes planos de estudio del Arte Prehistórico con la aplicación de varias disciplinas de las Ciencias Humanas: a través del ámbito filosófico con la Estética en el Arte y el ser humano como creador y productor, desde los procesos cognitivos con la Psicología del Arte y la creatividad, y con la Pedagogía con la Educación por el Arte, estudios que complementamos con la Sociología y la Lingüística. Además, profundizamos en diferentes aspectos sociales que apenas se han tratado en los estudios prehistóricos y que consideramos esenciales para la comprensión de las relaciones sociales humanas. Uno de los más interesantes es el asunto del arte infantil paleolítico, que está avalado por las evidencias arqueológicas que se están documentando en varios sitios rupestres de los territorios franceses y en numerosos puntos de la Península Ibérica. En el argumento, destacamos la cueva como un espacio social, cultural y cultual de estos grupos humanos, junto con el valor pedagógico y la influencia que debió de ejercer la imaginería prehistórica sobre los jóvenes en su formación personal y en sus conocimientos para estar preparados para la lucha ante la vida.

La agricultura es una de las principales potencias económicas, produciendo desarrollo y riqueza a nivel mundial. Este sector está afectado por diversos factores, tanto bióticos como abióticos, los cuales se traducen en elevadas pérdidas de rendimiento y costes en los cultivos. Los principales factores bióticos que afectan a la agricultura son las enfermedades, plagas y malas hierbas. Las malas hierbas son plantas que crecen de forma predominante en situaciones alteradas por el hombre, y que no resultan deseables para él en un lugar y momento determinado. Los herbicidas representan en la actualidad un papel imprescindible en el control de malas hierbas, siendo la herramienta más efectiva que se haya desarrollado, controlando alrededor del 99% de malas hierbas. Desafortunadamente, la era dorada de los herbicidas como única herramienta de control se ha visto truncada a causa de la aparición de malas hierbas resistentes a herbicidas por el uso abusivo de estos. El aumento exponencial de malas hierbas con resistencia se produce en una situación en la que durante los últimos 25 años no se han desarrollado nuevos modos de acción. La resistencia a herbicidas es el resultado de la adaptación evolutiva de las malas hierbas a las sucesivas aplicaciones herbicidas, y es sin duda, una de las principales preocupaciones en la agricultura moderna. Desafortunadamente, las malas hierbas pueden desarrollar no solo resistencia a un herbicida, sino que pueden desarrollar resistencia cruzada y/o múltiple. La comunidad centrada en la malherbologia presenta la preocupación de que los agricultores podrían enfrentarse a la perdida de los herbicidas como herramientas eficaces y económicas en las que se basa la agricultura productiva moderna. Este preocupante escenario comienza con la dependencia exclusiva del uso de un solo herbicida, ya sea por ejemplo glifosato en cultivos perennes, o diclofop en cultivos anuales. Ante esta situación, los agricultores cambian de herbicida, pero en muchas ocasiones no cambian de modo de acción, por lo que el problema no es solventado. En otras ocasiones, se cambia de modo de acción pero no es alternado con otros herbicidas en las sucesivas aplicaciones, apareciendo nuevamente la resistencia. Debido a la repercusión que ha ocasionado la resistencia de malas hierbas a herbicidas, así como la aparición de resistencia cruzada y/o múltiple, en este trabajo se han determinado los mecanismos de resistencia involucrados en poblaciones de Lolium rigidum resistente a glifosato en Francia [Capítulo II] y España, así como ofrecer alternativas químicas para obtener un control optimo, y poder controlar la resistencia [Capítulo III]. Además, se caracterizó la tolerancia natural de Avena sterilis a glifosato en el sur de España [Capítulo IV], sirviendo de ejemplo de que algunas malas hierbas no son controladas por glifosato, no por haber desarrollado resistencia sino por ser tolerantes. En el capítulo V se determinó la múltiple resistencia a herbicidas no selectivos en especies del genero Lolium spp. en la Península Ibérica, a causa de no alternar diferentes modos de acción en las sucesivas aplicaciones. Del mismo modo, en el Capítulo VI se caracterizó la resistencia cruzada a herbicidas pertenecientes a los inhibidores de la ACCasa (acetil- CoA carboxilasa) en Cynosurus echinatus procedente de Chile, a causa de utilizar herbicidas de diferentes familias químicas, pero todas ellas pertenecientes al mismo modo de acción. Se determinó el primer caso de resistencia francés en L. rigidum en el que se conocen los mecanismos implicados. Los resultados mostraron que la resistencia a glifosato en la población resistente francesa de L. rigidum se debe en parte a la reducción de absorción y translocación de glifosato en relación con la población susceptible, así como a una mutación en el gen que codifica la EPSPS. Por el contrario, la resistencia a glifosato en la población resistente española de L. rigidum se debe en parte a la reducción de absorción y translocación de glifosato, y no se encontró ninguna mutación en el gen que codifica la EPSPS. Los ensayos de campo determinaron que es posible obtener un control eficaz de L. rigidum utilizando diferentes modos de acción, así como la reducción del banco de semillas resistentes a glifosato. Las prospecciones realizadas mostró resultados homogéneos entre todas las accesiones de A. sterilis recogidas y, por lo tanto, todas ellas tienen el mismo nivel de tolerancia innata al glifosato, siendo los mecanismos fuera del sitio de acción los implicados en la tolerancia innata a glifosato en A. sterilis. Esto es probablemente debido en parte a una menor absorción / translocación del herbicida y metabolismo de glifosato. Estudios moleculares confirmaron que tres especies de malas hierbas de Lolium resistentes a glifosato (L. rigidum, L. perenne, y L. multiflorum) recogidas de cultivos perennes en la Península Ibérica también han desarrollado resistencia múltiple a los herbicidas glufosinato y oxifluorfen. Este estudio identificó el primer caso de resistencia a oxifluorfen en una gramínea. Los ensayos in vitro y de dosisrespuesta de ACCasa determinaron la resistencia cruzada a los herbicidas de las familias químicas APP, CHD y PPZ en C. echinatus. Los estudios de secuenciación de ADN confirmaron que la resistencia cruzada de C. echinatus a los inhibidores de ACCasa ha sido conferida por las mutaciones puntuales Ile-2041-Asn y Cys-2088-Arg. Agriculture is one of the main economic powers, producing development and wealth worldwide. This sector is affected by several factors, both biotic and abiotic, which have resulted in high yield and crop cost losses. The main biotic factors affecting agriculture are diseases, pests, and weeds. Weeds are plants that predominantly grow in situations altered by man, and are not desirable for at any time and given place. To date, herbicides play an essential role in weed control, being the most effective tool developed, controlling about 99% of weeds. Unfortunately, the golden era of herbicides as the only tool has been cut short by the herbicide-resistant weeds due to abusive use. The exponential increase of resistant weeds occurs in a situation where no new action modes have been developed during the last 25 years. Herbicide resistance is the result of the evolutionary adaption of weeds to successive herbicide applications, and it is undoubtedly one of the main concerns in modern agriculture. Unfortunately, weeds can develop not only resistance to one herbicide, but also they can develop cross- and multiple-resistance. The weed research community is concerned that farmers may be faced with the herbicide loss as an effective and economic tool on which modern productive agriculture is based. This worrying scenario begins with the exclusive use of a single herbicide, whether for example glyphosate in perennial crops, or diclofop in annual crops. In this situation, farmers change to another herbicide, but in many cases, they do not change the action mode, so the problem is not solved. At other times, they change the action mode, but it is not alternated with other action modes in the successive applications, exhibiting resistance again. Due to the herbicide-resistant weed impact, as well as the occurrence of cross- and multiple-resistance, this work has determined the mechanisms of resistance involved in glyphosate-resistant populations of Lolium rigidum from France [Chapter II], and Spain, as well as to offer chemical alternatives to control the resistance [Chapter III]. Also, the natural tolerance of Avena sterilis to glyphosate in southern Spain has been characterized [Chapter IV], offering as an example that some weeds are not controlled by glyphosate, not because of developed resistance, but because they are tolerant. In Chapter V, the multiple-resistance to non-selective herbicides in species of Lolium spp. genus from the Iberian Peninsula, due to not alternating different action modes in the successive applications has been reported. In the same way, cross-resistance to herbicides belonging to the ACCase (acetyl-CoA carboxylase)-inhibitors in Cynosurus echinatus from Chile has been characterized in Chapter VI, because of the use of herbicides of different chemical families, but all of them belonging to the same action mode. The first case of French resistance of L. rigidum has been determined in which the mechanisms involved are known. The results showed that glyphosate resistance in the French resistant population of L. rigidum was due in part to the reduction of glyphosate absorption and translocation in relation to the susceptible one, as well as to a mutation in the gene encoding EPSPS. In contrast, glyphosate resistance in the Spanish population of L. rigidum was due to reduced absorption and translocation, and no mutation was found in the gene encoding EPSPS. Field trials determined that it is possible to obtain an effective control of L. rigidum using different action modes, as well as the reduction of the glyphosate resistant seed bank. The surveys carried out showed homogenous results among all of the A. sterilis accessions collected; therefore, all of them have the same level of innate tolerance of glyphosate, being the non-target-site resistance the mechanism involved. This was due in part to a lower absorption and translocation, and glyphosate metabolism. Molecular studies confirmed that three species of glyphosate-resistant Lolium (L. rigidum, L. multiflorum, and L. perenne) collected from perennial crops have also developed multiple-resistance to glufosinate and oxyfluorfen. This study reported the first case of resistance to oxyfluorfen in grass. The in vivo and dose-response assays of ACCase determined the cross-resistance to the herbicides of the APP, CHD, and PPZ chemical families in C. echinatus. DNA sequencing studies confirmed that crossresistance to ACCase-inhibitors in C. echinatus has been conferred by Ile-2041-Asn and Cys-2088-Arg point mutations.

This leads to a modulation of the depth of the surface, resulting from an inhomogeneous intensity distribution, due to the interference between the incoming and the surface-scattered waves, reinforced with a positive feedback process. Such structures have a spatial period close to the laser wavelength, aligned parallel to the polarization of the laser beam

In the framework of the PhenoMeNal project and e-infrastructures (www.phenomenal-h2020.eu/home/), two workflows were prepared using previously developed programs for analysis of intracellular fluxes from isotopologue distributions. Isotopologue distributions will be available on data repositories in MetaboLights (www.ebi.ac.uk/metabolights). With this aim, programs were adapted to the workflows, docker container dockerfiles for each program were uploaded to GitHub repositories, added to Jenkins for building the docker images and galaxy wrappers were written for these tools. The resulting workflows included two of the following programs: 1) Midcor, an R-tool for primary 13C data correction for natural isotope enrichment; 2) Iso2flux, a Python-tool for steady state analysis of fluxes based on measured distributions of isotopologues; 3) Isodyn, a C-tool for dynamical analysis of fluxes based on time-series measured distributions of isotopologues.

This leads to the formation of structures with a spatial period close to the laser wavelength, aligned parallel to the polarization of the laser beam. Expanded Graphite (EG) is becoming a common reinforcement agent in polymers in order to improve substantially some of their properties, for instance, mechanical resistance or electrical conductivity. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a widely used polymer because of its excellent mechanical and chemical properties, and on the other hand, since it allows homogenous and simple dispersion of carbon based fillers

This work describes a thorough investigation of the mechanism of a highly selective hydrosilylation of CO2 to the formaldehyde level catalyzed by a bis(phosphino)boryl (PBP)Ni(II) complex in the presence of B(C6F5)3. CO2 activation by insertion into the Ni–H bond of the catalyst precursor 2 is shown to occur very easily, because of the trans influence exerted by the boryl ligand. During catalysis, the limiting step is B(C6F5)3 dissociation from the active species (PBP)Ni–OCHO·B(C5F6)3 (4), which controls the amount of free borane that can lead to over-reduction to methane. Free borane activates the silane by formation of [R3Si–H···B(C6F5)3], which can then transfer the silylium (R3Si+) fragment to the oxygen atoms of the Ni formate and Ni acetal intermediates. The ion pair [(PBP)Ni][HB(C6F5)3] (5) is the key species that activates CO2 in the catalytic cycle (and silylformate in a second step) with [HB(C6F5)3]− as the source of hydride. Hydride transfer to [(PBP)Ni–OCO]+ is virtually barrierless, whereas hydride transfer to [(PBP)Ni–OCHOSiR3]+ has the second-highest energy barrier of the process (25.2 kcal mol–1). Therefore, the (PBP)Ni framework is instrumental in both reduction steps of the catalysis and controls the selectivity of the reaction by sequestering B(C6F5)3

Analysing how species niches shift between native and introduced ranges is a powerful tool for understanding the determinants of species distributions and for anticipating range expansions by invasive species. Most studies only consider the climatic niche, by correlating widely available presence-only data with regional climate. However, habitat characteristics and disturbance also shape species niches, thereby potentially confounding shifts attributed only to differences in climate. Here we used presence and abundance data for Oxalis pes-caprae, a species native to South Africa and invading areas globally, to understand how niche shifts may be influenced by disturbance at habitat and landscape scales in addition to climate. Locality Mediterranean climate areas world-wide. Methods We used available presence-only data and also conducted extensive surveys of the abundance of Oxalis (c. 11,000 plots) across different habitats in South Africa and in the introduced range in the Mediterranean Basin. We extended principal component analysis methods for measuring niche shifts by using Bayesian generalized linear models to identify climatic and disturbance niche shifts. Results We found a large climatic niche expansion towards stronger seasonality and lower temperature in the introduced range, but this expansion was greatly reduced when considering only conditions available in both ranges. Oxalis occupied more natural landscapes in the native range that remained unoccupied in the introduced range (‘niche unfilling’). In contrast to the similar abundances in natural and disturbed habitats in its native range, Oxalis was more abundant in disturbed habitats in the introduced range. Conclusions The large climatic niche expansion most likely reflects significant plasticity of Oxalis rather than rapid evolution. Furthermore, the unfilling of its disturbance niche in the introduced range suggests high potential for further invasion of natural areas. Together, these findings suggest that the potential for future spread of invasive species may be underestimated by approaches that characterize species niches based only on climate or partial information about their distributions.

[ES] Introducción y objetivo: La discinesia ciliar primaria (DCP), también conocida como síndrome de inmotilidad ciliar (SIC), es un trastorno hereditario, que incluye un grupo de enfermedades en las que los cilios respiratorios son inmóviles, el movimiento ciliar es discinético e ineficaz o no hay cilios. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar la ultraestructura ciliar en pacientes con sospecha de DCP. Método: En 8 pacientes con sospecha de DCP se realizó una biopsia de mucosa nasal mediante endoscopia a nivel del cornete inferior en su tercio medio por el Servicio de ORL bajo anestesia local. Resultados: En 2 casos no se encontraron defectos ultraestructurales a nivel ciliar. En dos casos junto a anomalías en la ultraestructura ciliar hay presente un síndrome de Kartagener. En un caso no se observaron cilios en la mucosa nasal. Discusión: La DCP y el SIC son términos sinónimos desde el punto de vista clínico y patogénico. La inmovilidad y la discinesia conducen a una ausencia de transporte mucociliar, estasis de las secreciones respiratorias y sus consecuencias, infecciones crónicas de vías respiratorias altas y bajas desde el nacimiento. El defecto ultraestructural más frecuente es la ausencia total o parcial de dineína. Conclusiones: El estudio ultraestructural permite el diagnóstico de la DCP dada la dificultad para el diagnóstico genético y por tanto, conseguir un diagnóstico temprano de esta patología lo cual sirve para mejorar la morbimortalidad de estos pacientes. [EN] Introduction and objective: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), also known as ciliary immotility (SIC) syndrome is an inherited disorder that includes a group of diseases in which respiratory cilia are immobile, ciliary movement is dyskinetic and ineffective or no cilia . The aim of this study is to determine the ciliary ultrastructure in patients with suspected DCP. Method: In 8 patients with suspected DCP nasal mucosa biopsy is performed with endoscopy at the inferior turbinate in the middle third by the ENT service under local anesthesia. Results: Of the 8 cases studied in 2 cases no ciliary ultrastructural level defects were found. In two cases with abnormal ciliary ultrastructure is present Kartagener syndrome. In a case no cilia were observed in the nasal mucosa. Discussion: The DCP and SIC are synonymous terms from clinical and pathogenetic view: immobility and dyskinesia lead to an absence of mucociliary transport, stasis of respiratory secretions with their consequences: chronic infections of lower respiratory tract and from birth . The most common ultrastructural defect is the total or partial absence of dynein. Conclusions: The ultrastructural study allows the diagnosis of PCD because genetic diagnosis is complicated and therefore get an early diagnosis of this condition which serves to improve the morbidity and mortality of these patients.

La suspense può considerarsi un importante aspetto della fruizione narrativa e del coinvolgimento nella lettura. Per suspense si intende uno stato di incertezza cognitiva rispetto a un risultato atteso, accompagnato da ansietà o eccitazione (Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary). Le reazioni del lettore a questo aspetto dell’intrattenimento letterario sono positivamente collegate al piacere della lettura (Oliver, 1993) e all’immersione nella lettura (Hsu et al., 2014), e la suspense spiega sino al 34% della varianza nell’interesse situazionale per la lettura (Schraw et al., 2001). Tuttavia, molte persone sperimentano anche reazioni di forte disagio (stress fisico, paura, accelerazione del battito cardiaco o reazioni fobiche) a testi e film che evocano suspense (Robinson et al., 2014). Ad oggi, è difficile determinare con accuratezza l’effetto emotivo di un testo o film. Perciò, non esistono modelli computazionali capaci di misurare e modulare la suspense di una storia. Alcune eccezioni sono rappresentate da strumenti di storytelling automatico (Cheong et al., 2006; O'Neill, 2013), i quali si basano tuttavia esclusivamente sulla limitazione delle vie di fuga del protagonista rispetto a una minaccia. Il presente modello introduce un’importante novità nell’ambito della computer science: la modulazione della suspense sulla base della modificazione di valenza e arousal degli eventi chiave della storia. La letteratura suggerisce che siamo maggiormente coinvolti da una storia quando proviamo empatia per il suo protagonista (Komeda et al., 2013). L’empatia per il protagonista discende dalle caratteristiche di quest’ultimo e dalle informazioni che ci vengono date rispetto ai suoi stati emotivi, cognitivi e fisici (Altman et al., 2012). Due dimensioni che definiscono la percezione empatica sono la valenza (positiva o negativa) degli eventi per il protagonista e l’arousal (l’intensità della reazione) provocata dagli eventi. Il modello computazionale di suspense che presentiamo consente di aumentare o diminuire la suspense di un testo attraverso : a) l’astrazione automatica di misure di intensità e valenza emotiva (suspense) di una scena o evento; b) l’aumento o la diminuzione dell’arousal e valenza dell’informazione che provoca suspense. Il modello riceve informazioni circa il livello di suspense desiderato e un set di stati ed elementi di una sequenza di eventi che generano suspense (plot). Identifica i passaggi ad alta e bassa suspense nel testo, impiegando un database e un sistema di analisi automatica del testo per valutare la valenza e l’arousal di questi elementi. I risultati di tale analisi sono confrontati con lo stato di suspense desiderata. Il set di stati esaminati viene modificato sostituendo gli elementi estratti dalla storia con altri elementi (aggettivi, sostantivi, verbi) il cui arousal è più o meno alto e la cui valenza è più o meno negativa, al fine di ottenere lo stato di suspense desiderato.

Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) is one of the most widely used synthetic polymers for development of delivery systems for drugs and therapeutic biomolecules. Its properties and versatility make it a reference polymer in the manufacturing of nano and microparticles to encapsulate and deliver a wide variety of hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules, including biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids that must be released in a controlled way [1]. Delivery of growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins, and specially BMP-2, is an attractive therapeutic strategy for bone tissue engineering. However, their administration is problematic due to their short biological half-lives, localized action and rapid clearance. Consequently, its clinical use requires high doses far exceeding its physiological concentration which implies possible side effects and high costs. These barriers might be overcome by developing new delivery systems which allow a better control of the release rate in order to achieve the desired concentrations in specific site and time [2]. With this aim, in this preliminary study we have synthesized PLGA particles with different diameters, from nano (200 nm) to micro scale (12.5 μm) via double emulsion procedure, in order to study the influence of size in the release profile of lysozyme, which has been selected as an appropriate model for BMP2. A physico-chemical characterization of the particles was done, followed by a complete study on the encapsulation efficiency, cumulative protein release and bioactivity of the released enzyme with and without co-encapsulated bovine serum albumin, a protective biomolecule that can prevent protein instability during emulsification process. Supervised machine learning relies on a labeled training set, whose size is closely related to the achievable performance of any learning algorithm. Thanks to the progresses in ubiquitous computing, networks, and data acquisition and storage technologies, the availability of data is no longer a problem. Nowadays, we can easily gather massive unlabeled datasets in a short period of time. Traditionally, the labeling was performed by a small set of experts so as to control the quality and the consistency of the annotations. When dealing with large datasets this approach is no longer feasible and the labeling process becomes the bottleneck. Crowdsourcing has been proven to be an effective and efficient tool to annotate large datasets. By distributing the labeling process across a potentially unlimited pool of annotators, it allows building large labeled datasets in a short period of time at a low cost. However, this comes at the expenses of a variable quality of the annotations, i.e. we need to deal with a large set of annotators of possibly unknown and variable expertise. In this new setting, methods to combine the annotations to produce reliable estimates of the ground truth are necessary. In this thesis, we tackle the problem of aggregating the information coming from a set of different annotators in a multi-class classification setting. We assume that no information about the expertise of the annotators or the ground truth of the instances is available. In particular, we focus on the potential advantages of using Bayesian Nonparametric models to build interpretable solutions for crowdsourcing applications. Bayesian Nonparametric models are Bayesian models which set a prior probability on an infinite-dimensional parameter space. After seeing a finite training sample, the posterior probability ends up using a finite number of parameters. Therefore, the complexity of the model depends on the training set and we can infer it from the data, avoiding the use of expensive model selection algorithms. We focus our efforts on two specific problems. Firstly, we claim that considering the existence of clusters of annotators in this aggregation step can improve the overall performance of the system. This is especially important in early stages of crowdsourcing implementations, when the number of annotations is low. At this stage there is not enough information to accurately estimate the bias introduced by each annotator separately, so we have to resort to models that consider the statistical links among them. In addition, finding these clusters is interesting in itself, as knowing the behavior of the pool of annotators allows implementing efficient active learning strategies. Based on this, we propose in two new fully unsupervised models based on a Chinese Restaurant Process prior and a hierarchical structure that allows inferring these groups jointly with the ground truth and the properties of the annotators. The second problem is modeling inconsistent annotators. The performance of the annotators can be in-homogeneous across the instance space due to several factors like his past experience with similar cases. To capture this behavior, we proposed an algorithm that uses a Dirichlet Process Mixture model to divide the instance space in different areas across which the annotators are consistent. The algorithm allows us to infer the characteristics of each annotator in each of the identified areas, the ground truth of the training set, as well as building a classifier for test examples. In addition, it offers an interpretable solution allowing to better understanding the decision process undertaken by the annotators, and implement schemes to improve the overall performance of the system. We propose efficient approximate inference algorithms based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling and variational inference, using auxiliary variables to deal with non-conjugacies when needed. Finally, we perform experiments, both on synthetic and real databases, to show the advantages of our models over state-of-the-art algorithms., Todo aprendizaje máquina supervisado descansa sobre un conjunto de entrenamiento etiquetado cuyo tamaño muestral está directamente relacionado con el rendimiento final del algoritmo. Gracias a los avances en computación ubicua, redes y tecnologías de adquisición y almacenamiento de datos, la disponibilidad de datos con que entrenar estos algoritmos ha dejado de ser un problema. Actualmente, podemos fácilmente reunir enormes conjuntos de datos no etiquetados en cortos periodos de tiempo. Tradicionalmente, el etiquetado de estos datos, era realizado por un pequeño conjunto de expertos a fin de controlar la calidad final y la consistencia de las anotaciones. Cuando nos enfrentamos a grandes conjuntos de datos, esta forma de proceder deja de ser factible, convirtiéndose el etiquetado en un cuello de botella. Crowdsourcing ha probado ser una herramienta efectiva y eficiente para anotar grandes conjuntos de datos en aprendizaje máquina. Mediante la distribución del proceso de etiquetado a un, potencialmente ilimitado, conjunto de anotadores, permite construir grandes conjuntos de datos etiquetados en un corto periodo de tiempo y a un bajo coste. Sin embargo, todo esto tiene como precio una pérdida sobre el control de la calidad de las anotaciones. Nos enfrentamos ahora a un gran conjunto de anotadores cuya experiencia es variable y desconocida. En este nuevo escenario, métodos de combinación de las anotaciones para dar lugar a estimaciones fiables de la etiqueta verdadera son necesarios. En esta tesis, abordamos el problema de agregar la información procedente de diferentes anotadores en un problema de clasificación multi-clase. Asumimos que no existe información disponible acerca de la experiencia de los anotadores o la etiqueta verdadera de las muestras. En concreto, nos centramos en las ventajas potenciales de usar modelos bayesianos no paramétricos para construir soluciones interpretables para aplicaciones de crowdsourcing. Los modelos bayesianos no paramétricos son modelos Bayesianos que definen una probabilidad a priori sobre un espacio de parámetros con infinitas dimensiones. Tras observar una muestra de entrenamiento finita, la probabilidad a posteriori termina usando un número finito de parámetros. Por tanto, la complejidad del modelo depende del conjunto de entrenamiento usado que es inferida a partir de los datos, evitando el uso de costosos algoritmos para selección de modelos. Nos centramos en dos problemas específicos. En primer lugar, defendemos que tener en cuenta la existencia de grupos de anotadores en la etapa de agregación, puede mejorar el rendimiento global del sistema. Esto es especialmente importante en fases tempranas de la implementación del sistema de crowdsourcing, cuando el número de anotaciones en bajo. En esta fase no hay suficiente información para estimar con precisión el sesgo introducido por cada anotador por separado, por lo que tenemos que recurrir a modelos que tengan en cuenta las dependencias estadísticas entre los distintos anotadores. Además, encontrar estos grupos de anotadores es un problema interesante por sí mismo, pues el conocer el comportamiento de nuestros anotadores nos permite implementar estrategias eficientes de aprendizaje activo. Basándonos en esta hipótesis, proponemos dos nuevos modelos no supervisados haciendo uso de un prior Chinese Restaurant Process y una estructura jerárquica que nos permite inferir los grupos de anotadores así como sus propiedades y las etiquetas verdaderas. El segundo problema es el modelado de anotadores inconsistentes. El rendimiento de los anotadores puede ser no homogéneo en el espacio muestral debido a diferentes factores tales como sus experiencias pasadas con casos similares. Para capturar este comportamiento, proponemos un algoritmo que usa un modelo Dirichlet Process Mixture con el objetivo de dividir el espacio muestral en diferentes áreas en las cuales los anotadores son consistentes. El algoritmo nos permite inferir las características de cada anotador en cada una de las áreas identificadas, las etiquetas verdaderas de nuestras muestras de entrenamiento, así como construir un clasificador para futuras muestras. Además, ofrece una solución interpretable permitiendo una mejor comprensión del proceso de decisión adoptado por los anotadores, así como implementar estrategias para mejorar el rendimiento global del sistema. Proponemos algoritmos de inferencia aproximada eficientes basados en muestreo Markov Chain Monte Carlo e inferencia variacional, usando variables auxiliares para lidiar con modelos de observación no conjugados cuando así se requiera. [ES] Introducción y objetivo: Dentro de los tumores de glándulas salivales, los tumores benignos de la glándula parótida (GP) son los más frecuentes. En este estudio presentamos nuestros resultados en el tratamiento quirúrgico de la patología tumoral benigna de la GP. Material y Métodos: Se realiza un estudio retrospectivo de todos los pacientes diagnosticados de tumor de GP en un Hospital Comarcal, durante los años de 1993 a 2006, tratados mediante cirugía, así como su seguimiento postoperatorio durante 5 años. Resultados: Se han incluido en el estudio 104 pacientes, de los cuales 60 eran mujeres y 44 varones. El tumor más frecuente diagnosticado es el adenoma pleomorfo; la estancia hospitalaria media fue de 1,5 días. No se han observado recidivas en el periodo de estudio. Conclusiones: La parotidectomía parcial es una técnica segura en los tumores benignos de GP, tendiendo a ser cada vez más selectiva y económica en su aplicación, con muy escasa morbilidad y una estancia hospitalaria media reducida. [EN] Introduction and objective: Benign tumours of the parotid gland tumours represent the most common of the salivary glands. This study aims to report our experience for thirteen years in the management of benign tumour pathology of the parotid gland in the most controversial issues, such as diagnosis, type of surgery and perioperative management. Methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive study of all patients diagnosed with benign parotid tumours in our Comarcal Hospital during the years 1993-2006, inclusive, and who were treated by surgery. Results: The study included 104 patients, of whom 60 were female and 44 to male. The most common tumour is the pleomorphic adenoma and the average stay was 1.5 days. The partial parotidectomy are suprafacial and proper techniques for the treatment of these tumours, with few complications and no recurrence in our study. Conclusions:The partial parotidectomy is a suitable technique for benign parotid tumours, increasingly tending to be more selective in the removal, with very low morbidity and very short average stay.

determinados usos del suelo pueden actuar como fuente de propágulos de plantas exóticas o propiciar condiciones favorables para su establecimiento, derivando en procesos de invasión con grandes impactos en la biodiversidad. Nuestro objetivo ha sido entender los efectos de la antropización del paisaje litoral desde 1956 a 2007 en la riqueza de plantas exóticas. Identificamos todas las especies vegetales exóticas a lo largo de transectos recorriendo 381 Km de la costa del Sudoeste español. Estudiamos la asociación de la riqueza de exóticas con el clima, cubiertas de suelo en 1956, 1991 y 2007, intensidad de antropización entre 1956 y 2007 y área protegida. Encontramos una asociación positiva entre la riqueza de exóticas y el área antropizada. En cambio, la intensidad de antropización o área protegida no presentaron asociación. La asociación fue mayor considerando el paisaje de 1956, reflejando un posible crédito de invasión.
