We investigate the (large-scale) bar fraction in a mass-complete sample of M > 10^10.5 Msun disk galaxies at 0.2 10^11 Msun), where the fraction of bars in early-type disks becomes significantly lower, at all redshifts, than that in late-type disks. The bar fractions for galaxies with low and high SSFRs closely follow those of the morphologically-selected early-type and late-type populations, respectively. This indicates a close correspondence between morphology and SSFR in disk galaxies at these earlier epochs. Interestingly, the total bar fraction in 10^10.5 10^11 Msun disks it remains roughly constant. This indicates that, already by z ~ 0.6, spectral and morphological transformations in the most massive disk galaxies have largely converged to the familiar Hubble sequence that we observe in the local Universe, while for intermediate mass disks this convergence is ongoing until at least z ~ 0.2. Moreover, these results highlight the importance of employing mass-limited samples for quantifying the evolution of barred galaxies. Finally, the evolution of the barred galaxy populations investigated does not depend on the large-scale environmental density (at least, on the scales which can be probed with the available photometric redshifts).

The largest galaxies, and in particular central galaxies in clusters, offer unique insight into understanding the mechanism for the growth of nuclear black holes. We present Hubble Space Telescope kinematics for NGC1399, the central galaxy in Fornax. We find the best-fit model contains a black hole of 5.1 +-0.7 x 10^8 Msun (at a distance of 21.1 Mpc), a factor of over 2 below the correlation of black hole mass and velocity dispersion. We also find a dramatic signature for central tangential anisotropy. The velocity profiles on adjacent sides 0.5" away from the nucleus show strong bimodality, and the central spectrum shows a large drop in the dispersion. Both of these observations point to an orbital distribution that is tangentially biased. The best-fit orbital model suggests a ratio of the tangential to radial internal velocity dispersions of three. This ratio is the largest seen in any galaxy to date and will provide an important measure for the mode by which the central black hole has grown., Comment: 9 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We combine the results from several HST investigations of the central structure of early-type galaxies to generate a large sample of parameterized surface photometry. The studies included were those that used the "Nuker law" to characterize the inner light distributions of the galaxies. The sample comprises WFPC1 and WFPC2 V band observations published earlier by our group, R band WFPC2 photometry of Rest et al., NICMOS H band photometry by Ravindranath et al. and Quillen et al., and the BCG WFPC2 I band photometry of Laine et al. The distribution of the logarithmic slopes of the central profiles strongly affirms that the central structure of elliptical galaxies with Mv < -19 is bimodal, based on both parametric and non-parametric analysis. At the HST resolution limit, most galaxies are either power-law systems, which have steep cusps in surface brightness, or core systems, which have shallow cusps interior to a steeper envelope brightness distribution. A rapid transition between the two forms occurs over the luminosity range -22 < Mv < -20, with cores dominating at the highest luminosities, and power-laws at the lowest. There are a few "intermediate" systems that have both cusp slopes and total luminosities that fall within the core/power-law transition, but they are rare and do not fill in the overall bimodal distribution of cusp slopes. These results are inconsistent with the Ferrarese et al. Virgo Cluster Survey (VCS) analysis. However, using galaxies common to the VCS samples, we demonstrate that the VCS models of the cusps are either a poor match to the observations or consist of forms fitted to the galaxy envelopes and extrapolated inward to the HST resolution limit.

We present observations of 77 early-type galaxies imaged with the PC1 CCD of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2. "Nuker-law" parametric fits to the surface brightness profiles are used to classify the central structure into "core" or "power-law" forms. Core galaxies are typically rounder than power-law galaxies. Nearly all power-law galaxies with central ellipticities ε ≥ 0.3 have stellar disks, implying that disks are present in power-law galaxies with ε < 0.3 but are not visible because of unfavorable geometry. A few low-luminosity flattened core galaxies also have disks; these may be transition forms from power-law galaxies to more luminous core galaxies, which lack disks. Several core galaxies have strong isophote twists interior to their break radii, although power-law galaxies have interior twists of similar physical significance when the photometric perturbations implied by the twists are evaluated. Central color gradients are typically consistent with the envelope gradients; core galaxies have somewhat weaker color gradients than power-law galaxies. Nuclei are found in 29% of the core galaxies and 60% of the power-law galaxies. Nuclei are typically bluer than the surrounding galaxy. While some nuclei are associated with active galactic nuclei (AGNs), just as many are not; conversely, not all galaxies known to have a low-level AGN exhibit detectable nuclei in the broadband filters. NGC 4073 and 4382 are found to have central minima in their intrinsic starlight distributions; NGC 4382 resembles the double nucleus of M31. In general, the peak brightness location is coincident with the photocenter of the core to a typical physical scale of < 1 pc. Five galaxies, however, have centers significantly displaced from their surrounding cores; these may be unresolved asymmetric double nuclei. Finally, as noted by previous authors, central dust is visible in about half of the galaxies. The presence and strength of dust correlates with nuclear emission; thus, dust may outline gas that is falling into the central black hole. The prevalence of dust and its morphology suggest that dust clouds form, settle to the center, and disappear repeatedly on ∼ 108 yr timescales. We discuss the hypothesis that cores are created by the decay of a massive black hole binary formed in a merger. Apart from their brightness profiles, there are no strong differences between core galaxies and power-law galaxies that demand this scenario; however, the rounder shapes of core, their lack of disks, and their reduced color gradients may be consistent with it. © 2005. Absorption lines in the spectra of distant quasars whose sightlines pass through foreground galaxies provide a valuable tool to probe the dust and gas compositions of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. The first evidence of silicate dust in a quasar absorption system (QAS) was provided through our detection of the 10 micron silicate feature in the z=0.52 absorber toward the quasar AO 0235+164. We present results from 2 follow-up programs using archival Spitzer Space Telescope infrared spectra to study the interstellar silicate dust grain properties in a total of 13 QASs at 0.1, 6 pages, 2 figures. A variety of host galaxy (bulge) parameters are examined in order to determine their predictive power in ascertaining the masses of the supermassive black holes (SMBH) at the centers of the galaxies. Based on a sample of 23 nearby galaxies, comprised of both elliptical galaxies and spiral/lenticular bulges, we identify a strong correlation between the bulge gravitational binding energy ($E_g$), as traced by the stellar light profile, and the SMBH mass ($M_{\bullet}$), such that $M_{\bullet} \propto E_g^{0.6}$. The scatter about the relationship indicates that this is as strong a predictor of $M_{\bullet}$ as the velocity dispersion ($\sigma$), for the elliptical galaxy subsample. Improved mass-to-light ratios, obtained with IFU spectroscopy and I-band photometry by the SAURON group, were used for those sample galaxies where available, resulting in an energy predictor with the same slope, but with reduced scatter. Alternative $M_{\bullet}$ predictors such as the gravitational potential and the bulge mass are also explored, but these are found to be inferior when compared with both the bulge gravitational binding energy and bulge velocity dispersion predictors, for the full galaxy sample., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Supermassive black holes are thought to be relics of quasars, and their numbers and masses are therefore related to the quasar luminosity function and its evolution with redshift. We have used the relationship between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion (the M_bullet - sigma relation) to make an improved estimate of the mass density and mass spectrum of supermassive black holes. Uncertainties in the M_bullet - sigma relation have little effect on the mass density. We find a mass density of (4.8 +/- 1.6) h^2 x 10^5 M_sun Mpc^-3. We report the detection of interstellar silicate dust in the z_abs=0.685 absorber along the sightline toward the gravitationally lensed blazar TXS 0218+357. Using Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph data we detect the 10 micron silicate absorption feature with a detection significance of 10.7-sigma. We fit laboratory-derived silicate dust profile templates obtained from literature to the observed 10 micron absorption feature, and find that the best single-mineral fit is obtained using an amorphous olivine template with a measured peak optical depth of tau_10=0.49+/-0.02, which rises to tau_10~0.67+/-0.04 if the covering factor is taken into account. We also detected the 18 micron silicate absorption feature in our data with a >3-sigma significance. Due to the proximity of the 18 micron absorption feature to the edge of our covered spectral range, and associated uncertainty about the shape of the quasar continuum normalization near 18 micron, we do not independently fit this feature. We find, however, that the shape and depth of the 18 micron silicate absorption are well-matched to the amorphous olivine template prediction, given the optical depth inferred for the 10 micron feature. The measured 10 micron peak optical depth in this absorber is significantly higher than those found in previously studied quasar absorption systems. The reddening, 21-cm absorption, and velocity spread of Mg II are not outliers relative to other studied absorption systems, however. This high optical depth may be evidence for variations in dust grain properties in the ISM between this and the previously studied high redshift galaxies., 40 pages with 9 figures. Results from a multiwaveband study of the γ-ray-bright compact radio source 3C 454.3 are presented.

This project was inspired by optical and IR imaging suggesting that, while most QSO hosts at high z are too faint to detect, radio-loud quasars are hosted by exceptionally luminous galaxies. Thus, a search was undertaken for HI absorption against the continuum emission of strong radio emitters whose redshifts (z ∼ 2.3) bring their HI line into the 430-MHz Arecibo passband2. The aim was to detect, or set useful limits, on the HI in the hosts, say in dust lanes, introduced by mergers, or situated in obscuring circumnuclear tori. At Arecibo there is a choice of, a) the 430-MHz line-feed system, or b) the new 430-MHz Gregorian-dome feed. In practice, most of the data were taken with the Gregorian system, although some line-feed data were also acquired. This represents the first Arecibo line spectroscopy using the 430-MHz Gregorian receiver.
