1. Along-strike seismotectonic segmentation reflecting megathrust seismogenic behavior

Abstract

Understanding the along-strike seismogenic behavior of megathrusts is crucial to anticipating seismic hazards in subduction zones. However, if and how spatiotemporal frictional heterogeneity (high and low kinematic coupling) at depth feeds back into the upper-plate deformation pattern and how the upper-plate elastic signals and permanent records may correlate have yet to be fully understood. Hence, we mimic subduction megathrust seismic cycles using an analog seismotectonic model of an elastoplastic wedge overlying a frictionally heterogeneous megathrust. Coseismically, the zone above the down-dip limit of the aseismic and seismogenic patches undergoes extension and contraction, respectively, while the strain state shows a switch in polarity from coseismic to interseismic. The down-dip limit of the creeping zone produces permanent along-strike extension or contraction, depending on the frictional barrier strength. Our experiments show that the frictional locking heterogeneity generates more segmented along-strike strain patterns elastically (short term) than permanently (long term). Moreover, our results suggest that along-strike upper-plate strain patterns could serve as a proxy for interpreting persistent lateral variations of seismogenic behavior in subduction megathrusts.

2. Operational forecasts of stratospheric chemistry and aerosols by the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System for the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS)

Abstract

The ECMWF’s Integrated Forecast System (IFS) is the global atmospheric model used by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) to provide analyses and forecasts on atmospheric composition. While the IFS configuration used operationally until June 2023 comprised a chemistry scheme and an aerosol module designed only for tropospheric composition, it has now been upgraded (cycle 48R1) to solve also for stratospheric chemistry and sulfate aerosols. We describe these two modules and their latest developments, evaluating hindcasts of stratospheric composition across eight winter-spring seasons above the polar regions and different aerosol case studies including quiescent and volcanic periods.The new stratospheric chemistry module, IFS(BASCOE), is evaluated against the BASCOE Reanalysis of Aura-MLS (BRAM) demonstrating its capacity to forecast the chemical composition of the polar lower stratosphere above both the Arctic and the Antarctic for five years with very different evolutions of the polar vortices. The current performance allows us to study the interannual variability of ozone hole episodes, including the exceptional Antarctic 2020 event.The stratospheric extension of the aerosol module has been coupled to IFS(BASCOE) through sulphuric acid, the radiation scheme, and the 4Dvar assimilation scheme. Intercomparisons with aerosol-related datasets (GloSSAC, GOMOS-AerGOM, AERONET, TROPOMI-SO2) and simulations by WACCM-CARMA show reasonable agreement for the post-Pinatubo event (1991-1995), a quiescent period (1997-1999), the early Envisat period (2002-2004) and the Raikoke eruption (June 2019). The Raikoke test shows that the chain from (volcanic) trace gas increments, impacting consecutively SO2, sulfate, radiation, and temperature, is functional and ready to be tested in data assimilation mode., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Research infrastructures play a key role in launching a new generation of integrated long-Term, geographically distributed observation programmes designed to monitor climate change, better understand its impacts on global ecosystems, and evaluate possible mitigation and adaptation strategies. The pan-European Integrated Carbon Observation System combines carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG; CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O, H 2 O) observations within the atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems and oceans. High-precision measurements are obtained using standardised methodologies, are centrally processed and openly available in a traceable and verifiable fashion in combination with detailed metadata. The Integrated Carbon Observation System ecosystem station network aims to sample climate and land-cover variability across Europe. In addition to GHG flux measurements, a large set of complementary data (including management practices, vegetation and soil characteristics) is collected to support the interpretation, spatial upscaling and modelling of observed ecosystem carbon and GHG dynamics. The applied sampling design was developed and formulated in protocols by the scientific community, representing a trade-off between an ideal dataset and practical feasibility. The use of open-Access, high-quality and multi-level data products by different user communities is crucial for the Integrated Carbon Observation System in order to achieve its scientific potential and societal value.

Abstract

The cause of Huntington disease (HD) is a polyglutamine repeat expansion of more than 36 units in the huntingtin protein, which is inversely correlated with the age at onset of the disease. However, additional genetic factors are believed to modify the course and the age at onset of HD. Recently, we identified the V471A polymorphism in the autophagy-related gene ATG7, a key component of the autophagy pathway that plays an important role in HD pathogenesis, to be associated with the age at onset in a large group of European Huntington disease patients. To confirm this association in a second independent patient cohort, we analysed the ATG7 V471A polymorphism in additional 1,464 European HD patients of the "REGISTRY" cohort from the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN). In the entire REGISTRY cohort we could not confirm a modifying effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism. However, analysing a modifying effect of ATG7 in these REGISTRY patients and in patients of our previous HD cohort according to their ethnic origin, we identified a significant effect of the ATG7 V471A polymorphism on the HD age at onset only in the Italian population (327 patients). In these Italian patients, the polymorphism is associated with a 6-years earlier disease onset and thus seems to have an aggravating effect. We could specify the role of ATG7 as a genetic modifier for HD particularly in the Italian population. This result affirms the modifying influence of the autophagic pathway on the course of HD, but also suggests population-specific modifying mechanisms in HD pathogenesis.

14. Overview of results from continuous GPS observations in Iceland from 1995 to 2010

Abstract

Iceland is a natural laboratory for a variety of processes associated with crustal deformation, such as earthquakes, magmatic events, tectonic plate motions, and glacial load changes. Continuous GPS (CGPS) measurements started in Iceland in 1995, and since then data from the network have helped to shed light on many different active deformation processes. The number of CGPS sites in Iceland tripled during 2006–2008, as a result of an international collaborative effort coordinated by Icelandic scientists. By early 2010 the number of CGPS stations in Iceland had reached 64, located primarily around and within the NorthAmerican–Eurasian plate boundary zone. Since its initiation, the CGPS network has played an important role in monitoring volcanoes and seismogenic areas, most notably during the 2009–2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcano unrest. Plate spreading of up to 2 cm per year usually dominates the horizontal motion observed at the CGPS sites, while uplift is observed at many of the stations due to recent retreat of the Icelandic ice caps. Co-seismic and post-seismic deformation of the largest earthquakes in 2000 and 2008 in the South Iceland Seismic Zone were captured by the network, and high-rate (1 Hz) CGPS observations helped to identify two magnitude 6 mainshocks in 2008 that were separated in time by only 2–3 seconds. The CGPS network has thus enabled us to monitor deformation occurring over days to months caused by migration of magma or fluids, post-seismic transients, rapid deformation caused by earthquakes and eruptions, as well as the long term plate spreading signal.

Abstract

Eddy-covariance and Sodar/RASS experimental measurement data of the COPS (Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study) field campaign 2007 are used to investigate the generation of near-ground free convection conditions (FCCs) in the Kinzig valley, Black Forest, Southwest Germany. The measured high-quality turbulent flux data revealed that FCCs are initiated near the ground in situations where moderate to high buoyancy fluxes and a simultaneously occurring drop of the wind speed were present. The minimum in wind speed – observable by the Sodar measurements through the whole vertical extension of the valley atmosphere – is the consequence of a thermally-induced valley wind system, which changes its wind direction from down to up-valley winds in the morning hours. Buoyancy then dominates over shear within the production of turbulence kinetic energy near the ground. These situations are detected by the stability parameter (ratio of the measurement height to the Obukhov length) when the level of free convection, which starts above the Obukhov length, drops below that of the sonic anemometer. An analysis of the scales of turbulent motions during FCCs using wavelet transform shows the occurrence of large-scale turbulence structures. Regarding the entire COPS measurement period, FCCs in the morning hours occur on about 50% of all days. Enhanced surface fluxes of latent and sensible heat are found on these days.

20. The resistant polymer of the walls of the hydrocarbon-rich alga Botryococcus braunii

Abstract

The outer walls of the green alga Botryococcus braunii (main sites of hydrocarbon production and accumulation) show a complex constitution. They comprise a biopolymer highly resistant to non-oxidative degradation. The resistant polymer accounts for ca 9% of the cell dry wt and appears, along with hydrocarbons, as one of the major constituents of the alga. In addition to chemical resistance, B. braunii polymer exhibits other properties: mode of deposition and fluorescence, often used to identify sporopollenins. (Class of wall components generally regarded as originating from polymerization of carotenoid derivatives.) Nevertheless further studies, using IR spectroscopy and high resolution 13 C NMR of solids, along with determination of elemental composition and unsaturation levels, indicate that the bulk of the resistant polymer from B. braunii outer walls does not derive from carotenoids; accordingly it cannot be considered, in this respect, as a sporopollenin. In fact the information obtained on the structure of this important constituent of the alga is consistent with its formation via oxidative polymerization of B. braunii dienic hydrocarbons.

Abstract

Nitrate aerosols are expected to become more important in the future atmosphere due to the expected increase in nitrate precursor emissions and the decline of ammonium-sulphate aerosols in wide regions of this planet. The GISS climate model is used in this study, including atmospheric gas- and aerosol phase chemistry to investigate current and future (2030, following the SRES A1B emission scenario) atmospheric compositions. A set of sensitivity experiments was carried out to quantify the individual impact of emission- and physical climate change on nitrate aerosol formation. We found that future nitrate aerosol loads depend most strongly on changes that may occur in the ammonia sources. Furthermore, microphysical processes that lead to aerosol mixing play a very important role in sulphate and nitrate aerosol formation. The role of nitrate aerosols as climate change driver is analyzed and set in perspective to other aerosol and ozone forcings under pre-industrial, present day and future conditions. In the near future, year 2030, ammonium nitrate radiative forcing is about −0.14 W/m² and contributes roughly 10% of the net aerosol and ozone forcing. The present day nitrate and pre-industrial nitrate forcings are −0.11 and −0.05 W/m², respectively. The steady increase of nitrate aerosols since industrialization increases its role as a non greenhouse gas forcing agent. However, this impact is still small compared to greenhouse gas forcings, therefore the main role nitrate will play in the future atmosphere is as an air pollutant, with annual mean near surface air concentrations, in the fine particle mode, rising above 3 μg/m³ in China and therefore reaching pollution levels, like sulphate aerosols.

Abstract

We introduce a framework to efficiently parameterise the aerosol water uptake for mixtures of semi-volatile and non-volatile compounds, based on the coefficient, vi. This solute-specific coefficient was introduced in Metzger et al. (2012) to accurately parameterise the single solution hygroscopic growth, considering the Kelvin effect - accounting for the water uptake of concentrated nanometer-sized particles up to dilute solutions, i.e. from the compounds relative humidity of deliquescence (RHD) up to supersaturation (Köhler theory). Here we extend the vi parameterisation from single to mixed solutions. We evaluate our framework at various levels of complexity, by considering the full gas-liquid-solid partitioning for a comprehensive comparison with reference calculations using the E-AIM, EQUISOLV II and ISORROPIA II models as well as textbook examples. We apply our parameterisation in the EQuilibrium Simplified Aerosol Model V4 (EQSAM4clim) for climate simulations, implemented in a box model and in the global chemistry-climate model EMAC. Our results show (i) that the vi approach enables one to analytically solve the entire gas-liquid-solid partitioning and the mixed solution water uptake with sufficient accuracy, (ii) that ammonium sulfate mixtures can be solved with a simple method, e.g. pure ammonium nitrate and mixed ammonium nitrate and (iii) that the aerosol optical depth (AOD) simulations are in close agreement with remote sensing observations for the year 2005. Western historians and philosophers of history have increasingly noted the changing relationship of people to the past and the emergence of a different historical consciousness. Studies of historical consciousness reveal the ubiquity of the past in contemporary culture and society. More than simply helping us to understand how people connect to history or how well they know it, such research also reveals history as fundamental to the way people perceive themselves. Historical consciousness is both intuitive and learned. The nexus between the past and the discipline of history raises several critical educational questions, such as: How can we operationalize historical consciousness? Can it be taught and in what ways? How does it function alongside historical thinking and reasoning in classroom engagement? This chapter canvasses and historicizes multiple definitions of historical consciousness as it relates to history education and explores some classroom applications.
