Search

Task sharing improves access to mental health care in many countries, but little formative research has examined uptake in the United States. This Open Forum proposes the development of nonspecialist professional roles to deliver low-intensity behavioral interventions for common mental health conditions in U.S. settings such as primary care. Using data from a multilevel stakeholder assessment, the authors discuss findings and challenges associated with such a role. Key themes from stakeholder surveys concerned scope of practice, competencies, pragmatic concerns, and training needs. Although stakeholders generally found this role to be acceptable and feasible, the themes raised will be critical to developing and implementing such a role.

To explain the ethnic paradox of mental health in aging, we evaluated whether Black and Latinx older adults experience (1) fewer depressive symptoms (DepSx), but more physical problems, and (2) greater psychological resilience as a result of life stressors than White older adults.DepSx, physical health, and recent stress were obtained biennially from 25,893 older adults (77% White, 15% Black, 9% Latinx) in the U.S. Health and Retirement Study, across 16 years. Psychological resilience, lifetime stress, and discrimination experiences were available for 13,655 individuals. We conducted mixed-effects and linear regression analyses.For Blacks and Latinxs, experiencing more-than-usual stress events was associated with less increase in DepSx compared to Whites, although on average Blacks and Latinxs experience more DepSx. Black adults showed worse physical health than White adults and weaker effects of stress on psychological resilience despite experiencing more stress of all types. Findings were mixed for Latinxs.Studying effects of time-varying stress on changes in health and multiple stressors on psychological resilience by race/ethnicity elucidates mechanisms for later-age health disparities.Cross-sectional evaluations of stress and psychological health in a clinical setting may provide incomplete appraisals of health risks for Black and Latinx older Americans.

This study investigated the relationship between reappraisal and suppression with depression and mental well-being among university athletes. It was hypothesized reappraisal would associate with lower depression and greater mental well-being, whereas suppression would associate with greater depression and reduced mental well-being. Employing a cross-sectional design, 427 participants (Mage = 20.18, SD = 1.52; 188 males and 239 females) completed questionnaires assessing mental health and strategy use. Hierarchical multiple regressions revealed reappraisal was positively associated, and suppression negatively associated with mental well-being, ΔR2 = 4.8%, ΔF(2, 422) = 17.01, p p = .028; reappraisal, β = 0.21, p R2 = 0.4%, ΔF(2, 422) = 1.33, p = .267; suppression, β = 0.06, p = .114; reappraisal, β = 0.03, p = .525. Results highlight reappraisal as correlated with mental well-being in student-athletes, and therefore, reappraisal could be beneficial for managing stress in sport. Reappraisal may implicate how well-being is promoted through sport, but future experimental research is needed to confirm causal relationships.

Copyright © The Author(s), 2023. Background: There is increasing evidence for cognitive function to be negatively impacted by COVID-19. There is, however, limited research evaluating cognitive function pre- and post-COVID-19 using objective measures. Methods: We examined processing speed, attention, working memory, executive function and memory in adults (≤69 years) with a history of COVID-19 (n=129; assessed ≥20 days after diagnosis, none acutely unwell), compared to those with no known history of COVID-19 (n=93). We also examined cognitive changes in a sub-group of COVID (n=30) and non-COVID (n=33) participants, compared to their pre-COVID-19 pandemic level (data available through the MyCognition database). Results: Cross-sectionally, the COVID group showed significantly larger intra-individual variability in processing speed, compared to the non-COVID group. The COVID sub-group also showed significantly larger intra-individual variability in processing speed, compared to their pre-COVID level; no significant change occurred in non-COVID participants over the same time scale. Other cognitive indices were not significantly impacted in the cross-sectional or within subjects investigations, but participants (n=20) who had needed hospitalisation due to COVID-19 showed poor attention and executive function relative to those who had not required hospitalisation (n=109). Poor health and long-COVID symptoms correlated with poor cognitive function across domains in the COVID group. Conclusions: The findings indicate a limited cognitive impact of COVID-19 with only intraindividual variability in processing speed being significantly impacted in an adult UK sample. However, those who required hospitalisation due to COVID-19 severity and/or experience long-COVID symptoms display multifaceted cognitive impairment and may benefit from repeated cognitive assessments and remediation efforts. PurposeSchool social support is associated with improved adolescent wellbeing. However, positive school relationships were potentially disrupted when schools transitioned to distance learning in 2020 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This study investigated associations among perceived distance learning school support, mental health, social-emotional wellbeing, substance use, and delinquency among low-income, public high school students.MethodsWe analyzed longitudinal survey data, collected between June 2020 and June 2021, from 372 students attending five large urban public high schools. Mixed-effects regression models examined associations among changes in distance learning support and changes in mental health, social-emotional wellbeing, substance use, and delinquency, controlling for time, social-demographics, and baseline health.ResultsIn this predominantly Latinx (83%) sample, within-person increases in perceived distance learning support were associated with improved mental health, increased grit, increased self-efficacy, and decreased stress. Between-person differences in distance learning support indicated that students reporting greater support had improved mental and social-emotional outcomes. Although there were no within-person associations among distance learning support and hopelessness or delinquency, students with greater distance learning support (between-person) had lower levels of hopelessness and lower odds of engaging in any delinquent behavior. There were no associations between distance learning support and 30-day substance use.DiscussionSchool social support, even without students physically on campus, may be critical to adolescent health behaviors and social-emotional outcomes.

Background There is limited literature from India on effect of fathers' deployment on the mental health of children. This cross-sectional analytical study investigates the difference in anxiety levels of children whose fathers are deployed in a field location and compares it with children currently located with their fathers. Method Data were collected in an army school from 200 children aged 10–17 years with fathers deployed in field locations (n = 99) and fathers currently residing with the children (n = 105) via interviewer administered and self-completed Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders (SCARED) questionnaire. Results Anxiety scores were on an average, minimally raised above the cut-off level for children who had fathers deployed. In addition, panic disorder scores were also above the cut-off levels for these children. While scores were normal in all other domain, they were higher than that for children residing with their fathers, although the difference was not significant. Girls with fathers deployed had scores higher than cut-off scores for domains such as panic, separation anxiety and school avoidance, while boys had scores higher than cut-off scores only for panic disorders. However, the girls had significantly higher scores than boys in all domains. Girls in both groups (with and without father deployed) had higher scores than cut-off scores for panic disorders. Conclusion Anxiety levels in children were not found to be unduly affected by the deployment of fathers. But girls were found to have clinically relevant panic disorder, school avoidance and separation anxiety scores as compared with boys in the similar situation of parental separation.

Lockdown measures to control disease transmission were implemented at the start of the COVID-19 era, worsening the already existing sedentary lifestyle. Reduced physical activity (PA) and unhealthy eating habits have a negative impact on mental health in chronically ill patients, including diabetes patients. Mental illness, on the other hand, encourages a sedentary lifestyle, exacerbating all components of metabolic syndrome. While well-controlled diabetic patients with an HbA1c of less than 7% had a less severe clinical presentation and COVID-19 mortality rates, the favorable effect of PA on immunomodulation and immunoregulation should not be neglected. Given recent data indicating that a sedentary lifestyle is the third independent risk factor for COVID-19 complications and death (after advanced age and organ transplant), including regular PA has never been more vital. Since PA has a major impact on both glycemic control and mental health, implementing structured home-based activity programs could improve glycemic control and psychological well-being, hence positively impacting COVID-19 outcomes.

‘If I experience X, is it because of the illness, the medication, or is it ‘just me’?’ (Karp 2009) [Is it me or my Meds? Living with Antidepressants. Harvard University Press]. This issue is known as self-illness ambiguity (SIA) (Sadler 2007) ["The Psychiatric Significance of the Personal Self." Psychiatry: Interpersonal and Biological Processes 70 (2): 113–129]. In her paper Know Thyself: Bipolar Disorder and Self-concept, Carls-Diamante (2022) [“Know Thyself: Bipolar Disorder and Self-Concept.” Philosophical Explorations, 1–17] offers a taxonomy of different ways in which Bipolar Disorder can be related to one’s self and self-concept. In contrast to the essentialist model of mental disorders she seems to adopt, I propose a different outlook on SIA, following an enactive approach to psychiatric disorders as disorders of sense-making. One’s way of making sense of the world and/or oneself can become stuck in a rigid pattern that is stronger than oneself and at odds with how one would want to be. I argue that it is helpful to distinguish between the experiential SIA of specific experiences (Am I over/underreacting?) and the long term concerns of existential SIA (How to live my life in accordance with what matters to me despite/while having certain vulnerabilities?). I conclude that knowing oneself is not an intra-individual matter, nor primarily a matter of reflection: it is rather a relational and material practice of trying to live your life in accordance with what matters to you.

Changes in patterns of activity within the medial prefrontal cortex enable rodents, non-human primates and humans to update their behaviour to adapt to changes in the environment—for example, during cognitive tasks1–5. Parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex are important for learning new strategies during a rule-shift task6–8, but the circuit interactions that switch prefrontal network dynamics from maintaining to updating task-related patterns of activity remain unknown. Here we describe a mechanism that links parvalbumin-expressing neurons, a new callosal inhibitory connection, and changes in task representations. Whereas nonspecifically inhibiting all callosal projections does not prevent mice from learning rule shifts or disrupt the evolution of activity patterns, selectively inhibiting only callosal projections of parvalbumin-expressing neurons impairs rule-shift learning, desynchronizes the gamma-frequency activity that is necessary for learning8 and suppresses the reorganization of prefrontal activity patterns that normally accompanies rule-shift learning. This dissociation reveals how callosal parvalbumin-expressing projections switch the operating mode of prefrontal circuits from maintenance to updating by transmitting gamma synchrony and gating the ability of other callosal inputs to maintain previously established neural representations. Thus, callosal projections originating from parvalbumin-expressing neurons represent a key circuit locus for understanding and correcting the deficits in behavioural flexibility and gamma synchrony that have been implicated in schizophrenia and related conditions9,10.

The mental health of international students has become a concern, as they face high levels of psychological distress. We designed a five-week acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) workshop with two additional individual assessment meetings. The intervention aimed at helping international students attending a Finnish university to reduce their symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety, and enhance skills of psychological flexibility. The post-assessment was conducted seven weeks after the pre-measurement. Using data from 53 participants, an evaluation indicated that statistically and clinically significant reductions in symptoms were observed, and the workshop was well received. Regression analyses revealed that changes in psychological inflexibility, mindfulness, and value-based living acted as predictors of change in symptoms. Furthermore, changes in these psychological skills predicted changes in different kinds of distress. This study suggests that a brief group intervention might be a feasible alternative for enhancing the psychological well-being of international students. peerReviewed

AHEAD feasibility trial assessed the feasibility and acceptability of an 8-session group drumming programme aiming to improve executive function, depression and anxiety symptoms, and perceived social support in adolescents living with HIV in a rural low-income South African setting. Sixty-eight 12- to 19-year-old adolescents participated. They were individually randomised. The intervention arm (n = 34) received weekly hour-long group drumming sessions. Controls (n = 34) received no intervention. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed using rates of: enrolment; retention; attendance; logistical problems; adolescent-reported acceptability. Secondary measures included: five Oxford Cognitive Screen-Executive Function (OCS-EF) tasks; two Rapid Assessment of Cognitive and Emotional Regulation (RACER) tasks; the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) measuring depression and anxiety symptoms; the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). All feasibility criteria were within green progression limits. Enrolment, retention, and acceptability were high. There was a positive effect on adolescent depressed mood with signal for a working memory effect. There were no significant effects on executive function or socio-emotional scales. Qualitative findings suggested socio-emotional benefits including: group belonging; decreased internalised stigma; improved mood; decreased anxiety. Group drumming is a feasible and acceptable intervention amongst adolescents living with HIV in rural South Africa. A full-scale trial is recommended.

Objective During the COVID-19 pandemic, many research studies were adapted, including our longitudinal study examining cognitive impairment (CI) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Cognitive testing was switched from in-person to virtual. This analysis aimed to determine if the administration method (in-person vs. virtual) of the ACR-neuropsychological battery (ACR-NB) affected participant cognitive performance and classification. Methods Data from our multi-visit, SLE CI study included demographic, clinical, and psychiatric characteristics, and the modified ACR-NB. Three analyses were undertaken for cognitive performance: (1) all visits, (2) non-CI group visits only and (3) intra-individual comparisons. A retrospective preferences questionnaire was given to participants who completed the ACR-NB both in-person and virtually. Results We analysed 328 SLE participants who had 801 visits (696 in-person and 105 virtual). Demographic, clinical, and psychiatric characteristics were comparable except for ethnicity, anxiety and disease-related damage. Across all three comparisons, six tests were consistently statistically significantly different. CI classification changed in 11/71 (15%) participants. 45% of participants preferred the virtual administration method and 33% preferred in-person. Conclusions Of the 19 tests in the ACR-NB, we identified one or more problems with eight (42%) tests when moving from in-person to virtual administration. As the use of virtual cognitive testing will likely increase, these issues need to be addressed – potentially by validating a virtual version of the ACR-NB. Until then, caution must be taken when directly comparing virtual to in-person test results. If future studies use a mixed administration approach, this should be accounted for during analysis.

Recent global changes, including increased health risks and economic instability associated with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, highlight the need for mental health researchers to regularly and frequently monitor sociodemographic shifts. To minimise the risk of psychological complications arising from adverse events, we need to identify and understand the factors linked to psychological resilience in different populations. To this end, we collected data in Turkey during the third wave of the pandemic (June 2021). The aims were to identify how the level of perceived psychological resilience changed: (1) across sociodemographic groups (age, gender, perceived economic security, caregiver status, perceived socioeconomic status, education level, perceived social isolation, and presence of acquaintances who had contracted COVID-19); (2) across health groups (smoking status, psychological or chronic illness status, and having had COVID-19); and (3) in relation to changes in fear of COVID-19. Regression analyses showed that age, gender, economic security, socioeconomic status, and illness status were factors influencing resilience, and fear of COVID-19 was negatively correlated with resilience. Young adults, females, nonbinary individuals, a low socioeconomic status, and economically insecure groups as well as people with a psychological condition were identified as lower resilience groups. The results provide insights about the predictors of perceived psychological resilience during a global crisis and help identify vulnerable populations.

Twin and family studies have historically aimed to partition phenotypic variance into components corresponding to additive genetic effects (A), common environment (C), and unique environment (E). Here we present the ACE Model and several extensions in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ Study (ABCD Study®), employed using the new Fast Efficient Mixed Effects Analysis (FEMA) package. In the twin sub-sample (n = 924; 462 twin pairs), heritability estimates were similar to those reported by prior studies for height (twin heritability = 0.86) and cognition (twin heritability between 0.00 and 0.61), respectively. Incorporating SNP-derived genetic relatedness and using the full ABCD Study® sample (n = 9,742) led to narrower confidence intervals for all parameter estimates. By leveraging the sparse clustering method used by FEMA to handle genetic relatedness only for participants within families, we were able to take advantage of the diverse distribution of genetic relatedness within the ABCD Study® sample.

Background Many epidemiological studies have reported the association between various social factors and health status in mothers during and after pregnancy. However, little is known about their joint and longitudinal impact. We therefore examined the association of lack of social support and trust during pregnancy and at 2.5 years postpartum with health status in mothers. Methods To adequately address time-varying exposure, marginal structural models were fitted to a pseudopopulation constructed by inverse probability weighting. The model included records of 90,071 mothers participating in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Social support and trust were measured using a 9-item questionnaire (Q1-9). Mental and physical health were measured using Mental and Physical Component Summary scores from the 8-item Short-Form Health Survey. Results For the Mental Component Summary, the magnitude of the effect estimate was largest when participants lacked close friends/neighbors (Q4) at only 2.5 years postpartum (= -6.23), followed by a lack in emotional support (Q2) at the same time point (= -4.94). For the Physical Component Summary, effect estimates were negligible. The magnitude of the effect estimates of lack of social support and trust tended to be larger when there was a lack at only 2.5 years postpartum than at both time points. Conclusions These findings suggest that, after childbirth, a loss in social support, particularly in a concrete or instrumental aspect, carries high risk, especially for mental health. Our results highlight the importance of supporting mothers for more than a few years after pregnancy.

Purpose of Review The psychological aspects of musculoskeletal injury are often overlooked in the rehabilitation process. This review examines the effects of musculoskeletal injury on mental health in adult athletes and identifies themes to guide further research. Recent Findings Athletes are at risk for mental health struggles due to high athletic identity and identity foreclosure. Injured athletes have specifically been shown to have higher rates of anxiety and depression when compared to the general population. There is a lack of intervention-based research on the psychological well-being of athletes, and there are no systematic reviews synthesizing the impact of musculoskeletal injury on the mental health of adult athletes across a variety of sports. Summary Across professional, college-level, and amateur athletes, musculoskeletal injury is associated with worse mental health scores, including higher distress, higher anxiety and depression, lower social functioning, and lower health-related quality of life. For adults, involuntary retirement from sports due to musculoskeletal injury is a common theme associated with increased psychological distress, anxiety, and depression. In the reviewed literature, 22 unique mental health and 12 distinct physical health screening tools were used. Two articles studied interventions addressing mental health post-injury. Further research using an integrated physical and psychological approach to recovery is warranted and may improve mental and physical outcomes for injured athletes.

A high Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) morbidity and mortality have been reported among users and workers of long-term care facilities. The main objective of this work was to explore the prevalence and temporal pattern of COVID-19 in comprehensive network of long-term mental health facilities in Spain. Secondly, we aimed to estimate the effect of having a severe mental health diagnosis on prevalence and COVID-19 outcomes., We thank the patients and workers for participating in the study. This study evaluated the prevalence of positive screening for depression in Brazil and its associated factors. We used data from National Health Survey 2019 (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde - PNS), a population-based survey with 88,531 adults. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used with two scoring methods, the algorithm and the cutoff point≥10. The variables included sociodemographic characteristics. The prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated using Poisson regression. The positive screening for depression was 10.8% (95%CI: 10.4-11.0), at the cutoff point ≥10 and 5.7% (95%CI: 5.4-6.0) for algorithm. Significant differences were found in prevalence in some Brazilian states. Multivariable analyses showed that being female, black, under 70 years of age, having little education, being single, and living in an urban area were independently associated with a depressive symptoms. The highest association was found in the states of Sergipe, Goiás, Piauí, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Alagoas and lowest in Pará, Mato Grosso and Maranhão. The prevalence of positive screening for depression in Brazil has increased in recent years. More investment in mental health resources is necessary and surveys such as the PNS should be continued. Resumo Este estudo avaliou a prevalência de triagem positiva para depressão no Brasil e seus fatores associados. Utilizou-se dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde 2019 (PNS), um inquérito de base populacional com 88.531 adultos. Para avaliar os sintomas depressivos utilizou-se o Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) com dois métodos de pontuação: o algoritmo e o ponto de corte ≥10. As variáveis incluíram características sociodemográficas. Utilizou-se a regressão de Poisson para obter razões de prevalência, com intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%). A triagem positiva para depressão foi de 10,8% (IC95%: 10,4-11,0), no ponto de corte ≥10 e 5,7% (IC95%: 5,4-6,0) para o algoritmo. Houve diferenças significativas na prevalência entre alguns estados brasileiros. Análises multivariadas mostraram que ser do sexo feminino, negro, ter menos de 70 anos, ter baixa escolaridade, ser solteiro e residir em área urbana estiveram independentemente associados a sintomas depressivos. A maior associação foi encontrada nos estados de Sergipe, Goiás, Piauí, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Alagoas e a menor no Pará, Mato Grosso e Maranhão. A prevalência de triagem positiva para depressão no Brasil tem aumentado nos últimos anos. É necessário mais investimento em saúde mental e pesquisas como a PNS devem ser feitas continuamente.

The study goal is to determine factors related to sleep reactivity and to investigate whether sleep reactivity and related factors predict current and new incidents of insomnia in adolescents.Patients and Methods: At baseline, 11-to-17-year-olds (N = 185, Mage = 14.3 years, SD = 1.8, 54% female) answered an age-appropriate version of the Ford Insomnia Response to Stress Test, questionnaires about sleep, stress, psychological symptoms, and resources, filled out a sleep diary and used actigraphy. Insomnia diagnoses according to ISCD-3 criteria were assessed at baseline, after 9 months and after one and a half years.Results: Adolescents with high compared to low sleep reactivity had increased pre-sleep arousal, negative sleep-related cognitions, pre-sleep mobile phone use, stress experience, stress vulnerability, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, less social resources, and a later midpoint of bedtime. High sleep reactivity increased the likelihood for currently having insomnia, but not for the development of insomnia at subsequent assessments.Conclusion: The findings suggest that high sleep reactivity is related to poor sleep health and mental health but cast doubt on sleep reactivity as a pivotal predisposing factor for the development of insomnia in adolescence.Keywords: sleep vulnerability, sleep disorder, mental health, stress, resources, youth

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a prevalência de relação sexual forçada na vida e suas possíveis consequências na saúde mental e sexual em acadêmicos de cursos de graduação de uma universidade pública no Brasil. Estudo transversal quantitativo com 996 estudantes de graduação. A amostragem realizada de forma sistemática por conglomerados. Foi usado o modelo de Regressão de Poisson, e foram calculadas as frações etiológicas das consequências de relação sexual forçada. A prevalência de relação sexual forçada ao longo da vida foi de 12,1%. Sexo feminino, orientação sexual não heterossexual, primeira relação sexual antes de 14 anos de idade, insegurança alimentar e violência no contexto doméstico na infância foram associados à maior prevalência do desfecho. Indivíduos que sofreram relação sexual forçada foram mais propensos a apresentar diagnóstico de infecções sexualmente transmissíveis e de ter risco de suicídio. O estudo evidenciou a problemática da violência sexual no contexto universitário. Abstract The scope of this article is to investigate the prevalence of the experience of forced sexual intercourse on life and its possible consequences on mental and sexual health among undergraduate students at a public university in Brazil. It is a quantitative cross-sectional study with 996 undergraduate students. Sampling was carried out systematically by single-stage clusters. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using the Poisson Regression model, and the etiological fractions of the consequences of forced sexual intercourse were calculated. The lifetime prevalence of forced sexual intercourse was 12.1%. Female sex, non-heterosexual sexual orientation, first sexual intercourse before the age of 14, child food insecurity and domestic violence were associated with a higher prevalence of the outcome. Individuals who experienced forced sexual intercourse were more likely to be diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections and to represent a potential suicide risk. The study revealed the problems of sexual violence in the university context.

BackgroundIncreasing legalization of cannabis, in addition to longstanding rates of tobacco use, raises concerns for possible cognitive decrements from secondhand smoke or environmental exposure, although little research exists. We investigate the relation between cognition and secondhand and environmental cannabis and tobacco exposure in youth.MethodsThe Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study year 2 follow-up (N= 5580; 48% female) cognitive performance and secondhand or environmental cannabis or tobacco exposure data were used. Principal components analysis identified a global cognition factor. Linear mixed-effects models assessed global cognition and individual cognitive task performance by cannabis and/or tobacco environmental exposure. Sociodemographics and other potential confounds were examined. p values were adjusted using the false discovery rate method.ResultsGlobal cognition was not related to any exposure group after testing corrections and considering confounds. Beyond covariates and family- and site-level factors, secondhand tobacco was related to poorer visual memory (p= .02), and environmental tobacco was associated with poorer visuospatial (p= .02) and language (p= .008) skills. Secondhand cannabis was related to cognition, but not after controlling for potential confounders (p > .05). Environmental cannabis was related to better oral reading (p= .01). Including covariates attenuated effect sizes.ConclusionsSecondhand tobacco exposure was associated with poorer visual memory, while environmental tobacco exposure was related to poorer language and visuospatial skills. Secondhand cannabis was not related to cognition after controlling for sociodemographic factors, but environmental cannabis exposure was related to better reading. Because, to our knowledge, this is the first known study of its kind and thus preliminary, secondhand cannabis should continue to be investigated to confirm results.

Several GWAS reported Myocyte Enhancer Factor 2 C (MEF2C) gene associations with white matter microstructure and psychiatric disorders, and MEF2C involvement in pathways related to neuronal development suggests a common biological factor underlying these phenotypes. We aim to refine the MEF2C effects in the brain relying on an integrated analysis of white matter and psychiatric phenotypes in an extensively characterized sample. This study included 870 Brazilian adults (47% from an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder outpatient clinic) assessed through standardized psychiatric interviews, 139 of which underwent a magnetic resonance imaging scan. We evaluated variants in the MEF2C region using two approaches: 1) a gene-wide analysis, which uses the sum of polymorphism effects, and 2) SNP analyses, restricted to the independent variants within the gene. The outcomes included psychiatric phenotypes and fractional anisotropy for brain images. Results: The gene-wide analyses pointed to a nominal association between MEF2C and the Temporal Portion of the Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLFTEMP). The SNP analysis identified four independent variants significantly associated with SLFTEMP and one (rs4218438) with Substance Use Disorder. Our findings showing specific associations of MEF2C variants with temporal-frontal circuitry components may help to elucidate how the MEF2C gene underlies a broad range of psychiatric phenotypes since these regions are relevant to executive and cognitive functions.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the associations of perceived stress, stressors, and distress with sleep disturbance and duration among Asian immigrants.Design/setting/participantsThe sample included 400 Asian immigrants aged 50-75 years old recruited from primary care physicians' clinics.MethodsWe fit multivariable regression models to examine the associations of perceived stress, stressors, and distress with self-reported sleep disturbance and duration. We tested effect modifications by language proficiency, years in the United States, acculturative stress, and social support.ResultsA total of 73 (18.3%) participants reported any sleep disturbance, and the average time in bed was 7.25 hours (SD=1.17). Higher perceived stress (PR=1.15, 95% CI=1.06, 1.26), stressors (PR=1.32, 95% CI=1.13, 1.59), and distress (PR=1.36, 95% CI=1.21, 1.57) were associated with a higher prevalence of any sleep disturbance. These associations were not modified by language proficiency, years in the United States, acculturative stress, and social support. On the other hand, the associations of perceived stress and distress with time in bed were modified by years in the United States. Specifically, higher levels of distress were associated with shorter times in bed only among adults who have resided in the United States for less than 10 years.ConclusionPerceived stress, stressors, and distress were associated with a higher prevalence of sleep disturbance. Moreover, perceived stress and distress had stronger associations with times in bed among recent immigrants. Future sleep health research in Asian Americans should consider the important role of stress and distress, especially among recent immigrants.

Introduction Every 40seconds, one person in the world commits suicide. As such, suicide is considered a public health problem, and prior suicide attempt is one of the risk factors associated with completed suicide. Despite the strategies implemented and the studies carried out, in Colombia suicide figures are on the rise, more markedly in the economically active population. Objective To identify the sociodemographic, family, personal, economic and religious factors associated with suicide attempt in patients of productive age (18-62 years old) in a mental health institution in Bogota, Colombia. Methods An analytical prevalence study was conducted at the Nuestra Senora de la Paz mental health clinic in Bogota. To explore the relationship between the factors described and suicide attempt, a review of 350 medical records of the selected population was carried out. Results In total, 37.7% of the sample presented a suicide attempt. Associations were found between the suicide attempt and higher education than primary school (PR=0.47 [0.23-0.97]), no economic income (PR=1.72 [1.13-2.61]), no partner (PR=2.10 [1.33-3.32]), alcohol consumption (p=0.045), hallucinogen use (PR=2.39 [0.97-3.43]) and the presence of personality disorder (PR=1.93 [1.11-3.34]). Conclusions The results of the study are similar to those previously described in other studies around the world. There is a need to recognise and address various factors associated with suicide attempt in depressed patients in order to implement promotion and prevention actions, early identification and specific interventions that have an impact on the numbers of completed suicide in the country.

This paper examines factors associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) among newly married women in Nepal, and how IPV was affected by food insecurity and COVID-19. Given evidence that food insecurity is associated with IPV and COVID-19, we explored whether increased food insecurity during COVID-19 is associated with changes in IPV. We used data from a cohort study of 200 newly married women aged 18-25 years, interviewed five times over two years at 6-month intervals (02/2018-07/2020), including after COVID-19-associated lockdowns. Bivariate analysis and mixed-effects logistic regression models were used to examine the association between selected risk factors and recent IPV. IPV increased from 24.5% at baseline to 49.2% before COVID-19 and to 80.4% after COVID-19. After adjusting for covariates, we find that both COVID-19 (OR = 2.93, 95% CI 1.07-8.02) and food insecurity (OR = 7.12, 95% CI 4.04-12.56) are associated with increased odds of IPV, and IPV increased more for food-insecure women post COVID-19 (compared to non-food insecure), but this was not statistically significant (confidence interval 0.76-8.69, p-value = 0.131). Young, newly married women experience high rates of IPV that increase with time in marriage, and COVID-19 has exacerbated this, especially for food-insecure women in the present sample. Along with enforcement of laws against IPV, our results suggest that special attention needs to be paid to women during a crisis time like the current COVID-19 pandemic, especially those who experience other household stressors.

Objetivo: evaluar la asociación entre la calidad de vida y la presencia de síntomas de depresión, ansiedad y estrés en estudiantes universitarios del área de la salud. Método: estudio transversal que incluyó a 321 estudiantes de carreras del área de la salud. La calidad de vida se midió mediante la escala de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, versión abreviada, en los dominios físico, psicológico, relaciones sociales y ambiente, y los síntomas se evaluaron por la escala de depresión, ansiedad y estrés. Se realizó un análisis multivariante por medio de regresión lineal robusta para evaluar la asociación entre la calidad de vida y los síntomas presentados. Resultados: se observó una asociación negativa entre la calidad de vida y los síntomas de depresión en todos los dominios, mientras que los síntomas de ansiedad tuvieron una asociación negativa en el dominio ambiente, y los síntomas de estrés tuvieron una asociación negativa en el dominio psicológico. La gravedad de los síntomas se asoció desfavorablemente con la calidad de vida, es decir, cuanto mayor la gravedad de los síntomas, menores las puntuaciones medias en todos los dominios. Conclusión: los síntomas de depresión, ansiedad y estrés fueron prevalentes e impactaron negativamente en la calidad de vida de los estudiantes, especialmente en presencia de síntomas depresivos. Las puntuaciones disminuidas se asociaron significativamente con la gravedad de los síntomas. Objective: to evaluate the association between quality of life and presence of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in college students in the health area. Method: cross-sectional study that included 321 students from undergraduate courses in the health area. Quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization scale, abbreviated version, in the physical, psychological, social relations and environment domains, and symptoms were assessed by the depression, anxiety and stress scale. Multivariate analysis was performed using robust linear regression to evaluate the association between quality of life and symptoms. Results: a negative association was observed between the quality of life and depression symptoms in all domains, while anxiety symptoms showed a negative association in the environment domain, and stress symptoms had a negative association in the psychological domain. Symptom severity was unfavorably associated with quality of life, that is, the greater the symptom severity, the lower the mean scores in all domains. Conclusion: symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were prevalent and had a negative impact on students’ quality of life, especially in the presence of depressive symptoms. The decrease in scores was significantly associated with the severity of symptoms. Objetivo: avaliar a associação entre qualidade de vida e presença de sintomas de depressão, ansiedade e estresse em estudantes universitários da área da saúde. Método: estudo transversal que incluiu 321 estudantes de cursos de graduação da área da saúde. A qualidade de vida foi mensurada por meio da escala da Organização Mundial da Saúde, versão abreviada, nos domínios físico, psicológico, relações sociais e meio ambiente, e os sintomas avaliados pela escala de depressão, ansiedade e estresse. Foi realizada análise multivariada utilizando regressão linear robusta para avaliar a associação entre qualidade de vida e sintomas apresentados. Resultados: observou- se associação negativa entre qualidade de vida e sintomas de depressão em todos os domínios, enquanto os sintomas de ansiedade apresentaram associação negativa no domínio meio ambiente, e os sintomas de estresse tiveram associação negativa no domínio psicológico. A gravidade dos sintomas associou-se de forma desfavorável com a qualidade de vida, ou seja, quanto maior a gravidade dos sintomas, menor a média dos escores em todos os domínios. Conclusão: sintomas de depressão, ansiedade e estresse mostraram-se prevalentes e com impacto negativo na qualidade de vida dos estudantes, principalmente na presença de sintomas depressivos. A diminuição dos escores foi significativamente associada à gravidade dos sintomas.

IntroductionThe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had devastating consequences for persons with opioid use disorder (OUD). Yet, little is known about how people seeking treatment for OUD perceive the risks of COVID-19 and how their perception interplays with their health behaviours.MethodsIn-depth interviews were conducted from September 2021 to March 2022 with 32 patients seeking medication treatment for OUD (MOUD) in Southern California. All interviews were conducted virtually and lasted between one and two hours. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Two qualitative researchers independently conducted a content analysis of the transcripts to identify themes.ResultsThree primary themes were identified: (1) perceptions and beliefs about COVID-19 susceptibility and severity; (2) perceptions of COVID-19 risk compared to substance use behaviours; and (3) vaccine hesitancy. Participants were mixed in their beliefs of susceptibility to contracting COVID-19 and the severity of the disease if contracted. Some participants reported taking precautions to mitigate their chances of acquiring COVID-19, and other participants reported that COVID was not a big concern as substance use took priority. For many of the participants, COVID-19 concerns were overshadowed by the risk of overdosing on substances and other risky substance use behaviour. Most of the participants (n = 23; 72%) had received at least one COVID-19 vaccine by the time of the interview, but over half (n = 19; 59%) expressed vaccine hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy was driven by concerns about the unknown long-term side effects and potential interactions of the vaccine with MOUD.ConclusionsOur study provides insight into COVID-19 prevention measures as well as vaccination perceptions and hesitancy among people who received treatment for OUD.Key messagesParticipants expressed diverse perceptions of the seriousness of COVID-19, with some taking precautions to mitigate their chances of acquiring COVID-19 and others perceiving that the risk of contracting COVID-19 was less than the risk of overdosing.Substance use, social isolation, vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 risk behaviours should be studied as co-occurring phenomena that have potentially overlapping relationships that can influence behaviours that impact health and well-being.

Extant literature investigates the impact of COVID-19 on mental health outcomes, however there is a paucity of work examining mental health distress as a risk factor for COVID-19 outcomes. While systemic variables like income inequality relate to both mental health and COVID-19, more work is needed to test theoretically informed models including such variables. Using a social-ecological framework, we aimed to address these gaps in the literature by conducting a neighborhood-level analysis of potential mental health distress and systemic- (income inequality) level predictors of reported COVID-19 infection and mortality over time in Chicago. Neighborhood-level comparisons revealed differences in mental health distress, income inequality, and reported COVID-19 mortality, but not reported COVID-19 infection. Specifically, Westside and Southside neighborhoods generally reported higher levels of mental health distress and greater concentration of poverty. The Central neighborhood showed a decline in reported mortality rates over time. Multi-level negative binomial models established that Zip-codes with greater mental health distress were at increased reported COVID-19 infection risk, yet lower mortality risk; Zip-codes with more poverty were at increased reported COVID-19 infection risk, yet lower mortality risk; and Zip-codes with the highest percentage of People of Color were at decreased risk of reported COVID-19 mortality. Taken together, these findings substantiate Chicago neighborhood-level disparities in mental health distress, income inequality, and reported COVID-19 mortality; identify unique differential associations of mental health distress and income inequality to reported COVID-19 infection and reported mortality risk; and, offer an alternative lens towards understanding COVID-19 outcomes in terms of race/ethnicity.

This study sought to validate a combined assessment for major depression and generalized anxiety, administered by health providers in a primary care setting in Mozambique. Patients attending a primary care visit ( N = 502) were enrolled in the study and completed the Patient Health Questionniare–9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder–7, and six items identified in a global systematic qualitative review of depression that were not captured in existing measures (e.g., social isolation, “thinking too much,” and “heart problems”). A separate trained mental health provider conducted the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0, adapted for Mozambique, to establish clinical diagnoses. Item response theory, factor analysis, and receiver operating characteristics were all used to identify the best screening items. Eight items were identified for the final screener: four items from the Patient Health Questionniare–9, two from the Generalized Anxiety Disorder–7, and two from the global depression literature. A cut-score of 7 was found to consistently increase the diagnostic likelihood of having a particular disorder. Overall, findings indicate good clinical utility of the screener in primary care in Mozambique.

Serious mental illnesses (SMI) often occur during early adulthood, just as young people are developing important aspects of their identity that can affect their recovery. Positive ethnic identity development is associated with stress coping and psychological well-being in young people. But, there is limited research to indicate how individual experiences of belonging and attachment to one's ethnic group influence personal recovery processes among young adults living with SMI.Young adults living with SMI (95% identified as ethnic/racial minorities) were recruited from four outpatient psychiatric rehabilitation programs (A stronger, more developed ethnic identity and fewer depressive symptoms were associated with higher ratings of personal recovery. Increases in psychiatric symptoms predicted increased perceived stress. Post hoc analyses showed that Black, Latino/a, and multiracial study participants' ethnic identity ratings were similar to those of same ethnic/racial group of young adults without SMI.Ethnic identity development could be a significant psychosocial factor shaping mental health recovery among minority young people living with SMI. Several factors associated with psychological well-being among ethnic and racial minority youth may account for this, including adaptive coping, social support, and a buffering effect against racism. Our findings indicate that assessing and developing a young person's ethnic identity-related strengths and resources as a means for improving the personalization of recovery services and enhancing the quality of care. Older displaced persons often receive limited attention from aid organizations, policy-makers and service providers in countries of resettlement. The objective of this study is to identify the relationship between experiencing traumatic events and stressors prior to resettlement, current resettlement stressors, social support, and mental health of older Bhutanese with a refugee life experience.Study participants were 190 older Bhutanese with a refugee life experience living in a metropolitan area in New England (US) and Ontario (Canada). We used structural equation modeling to determine the association between traumatic and stressful events in Bhutan and Nepal, current resettlement stressors, and symptoms of anxiety and depression, as measured by the GAD-7 and PHQ-9. We assessed the role of social support as an effect modifier in the relationship between these variables.Surviving torture was associated with anxiety (Both past traumas and current resettlement stressors contribute to the current psychosocial functioning of older Bhutanese with a refugee life experience. Based on our findings, social support is critical in promoting mental health in this population.

Objectives:To test the hypothesis that higher level of purpose in life is associated with lower likelihood of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older Brazilians.Methods:As part of the Pathology, Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Study (PARDoS), informants of 1,514 older deceased Brazilians underwent a uniform structured interview. The informant interview included demographic data, the Clinical Dementia Rating scale to diagnose dementia and MCI, the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule for depression, and a 6-item measure of purpose in life, a component of well-being.Results:Purpose scores ranged from 1.5 to 5.0 with higher values indicating higher levels of purpose. On the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale, 940 persons (62.1%) had no cognitive impairment, 121 (8.0%) had MCI, and 453 (29.9%) had dementia. In logistic regression models adjusted for age at death, sex, education, and race, higher purpose was associated with lower likelihood of MCI (odds ratio = .58; 95% confidence interval [CI]: .43, .79) and dementia (odds ratio = .49, 95% CI: .41, .59). Results were comparable after adjusting for depression (identified in 161 [10.6%]). Neither race nor education modified the association of purpose with cognitive diagnoses.Conclusions:Higher purpose in life is associated with lower likelihood of MCI and dementia in older black and white Brazilians.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the prevalence of substance use as a coping mechanism and identified relationships between maternal mental health over time and use of substances to cope during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic among pregnant women in the U.S.A. METHODS: Self-reported repeated measures from 83 pregnant women were collected online in April 2020 and May 2020. Women retrospectively reported their mental/emotional health before the pandemic, as well as depression, stress, and substance use as a result of the pandemic at both time points. Linear regression measured cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between mental health and substance use. RESULTS: Pre-COVID-19 reports of poorer mental/emotional health (b = 0.46) were significantly (p < .05) associated with number of substances used to cope with the pandemic. Elevated stress (b = 0.35) and depressive symptoms (b = 0.27) and poorer mental/ emotional health (b = 0.14) in April were also significantly related to higher numbers of substances used in May (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Pregnant women’s psychological well-being may be a readily measured indicator of substance use risk during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Interventions addressing increased stress and depression may also mitigate the emergence of greater substance use among pregnant women.

Clinicians trained to assess and treat child psychopathology are facing an increasing need to expand their clinical expertise outside of traditional frameworks, which have historically focused largely on the child or the child-mother dyad. Clinicians treating children also need to be prepared to assess and address the systems of care that affect a child's mental health, starting with their family. There is a scarcity of Latino mental health providers and limited clinical opportunities or settings that serve this population by incorporating a developmental, cultural, and sociopolitical framework into high quality care of the whole family.

Rapid identification and management of students with COVID-19 symptoms, exposure, or disease are critical to halting disease spread and protecting public health. We describe the interdisciplinary isolation and quarantine program of a large, public university, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. The program provided students with wraparound services, including medical, mental health, academic, and other support services during their isolation or quarantine stay. The program successfully accommodated 844 cases during the fall 2020 semester, thereby decreasing exposure to the rest of the university and the local community. Measurement-based care (MBC) is an evidence-based practice that is rarely integrated into psychotherapy. The authors sought to determine whether tailored MBC implementation can improve clinician fidelity and depression outcomes compared with standardized implementation.This cluster-randomized trial enrolled 12 community behavioral health clinics to receive 5 months of implementation support. Clinics randomized to the standardized implementation received electronic health record data captured with the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a needs assessment, clinical training, guidelines, and group consultation in MBC fidelity. Tailored implementation support included these strategies, but the training content was tailored to clinics’ barriers to MBC, and group consultation centered on overcoming these barriers. Clinicians (N=83, tailored; N=71, standardized) delivering individual psychotherapy to 4,025 adults participated. Adult patients (N=87, tailored; N=141, standardized) contributed data for depression outcome analyses.The odds of PHQ-9 completion were lower in the tailored group at baseline (odds ratio [OR]=0.28, 95% CI=0.08–0.96) but greater at 5 months (OR=3.39, 95% CI=1.00–11.48). The two implementation groups did not differ in full MBC fidelity. PHQ-9 scores decreased significantly from baseline (mean±SD=17.6±4.4) to 12 weeks (mean=12.6±5.9) (p0.001), but neither implementation group nor MBC fidelity significantly predicted PHQ-9 scores at week 12.Tailored MBC implementation outperformed standardized implementation with respect to PHQ-9 completion, but discussion of PHQ-9 scores in clinician-patient sessions remained suboptimal. MBC fidelity did not predict week-12 depression severity. MBC can critically inform collaborative adjustments to session or treatment plans, but more strategic system-level implementation support or longer implementation periods may be needed.

The perspectives of professionals involved in behavioral health (BH) services with short-stay residents in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) are rarely captured in the literature. This study examines the real-world experiences of BH clinicians and administrators in post-acute/subacute care units in SNFs.This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with 18 clinicians (e.g., psychologists and social workers) and five administrators (e.g., directors of social services or BH company executives) involved in BH services with short-stay SNF residents. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by two independent coders using conventional thematic content analysis.Three themes emerged from the data: (1) BH needs are high among short-stay residents and families during post-acute care transitions; (2) BH services offer multiple unique opportunities to enhance post-acute/subacute care in SNFs; and (3) barriers to providing optimal BH care exist at multiple levels and require action from BH clinicians and stakeholders.Variability in clinician roles and barriers to optimized care suggest the need for future research targeting best practices and implementation strategies for BH services with short-stay SNF residents.Results identified multiple ways in which BH services may enhance resident, family, and staff outcomes, as well as the milieu in SNFs.

To report on multilevel strategies for addressing community mental health disparities among young Black/African American men, who are at increased risk for trauma exposure yet have a lower likelihood of receiving mental health care compared to other young adults.This was a secondary data analysis from a larger mixed-methods study that was conducted in two phases, using an exploratory sequential design. Participants in Phase 1 were 55 Black men aged 18-30 years old (M = 22.55, SD = 3.9), who had experienced one or more lifetime traumatic events. Relevant for the present study, participants completed focus groups that elicited community needs and recommended strategies for promoting community mental health. The social-ecological model (including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public policy levels) was used to guide interpretation of these qualitative findings.Focus groups recommended intervention strategies from individual/interpersonal levels (e.g., educational resources, fostering social support) to organizational and community approaches (e.g., resource fairs; tools for schools, churches, and broader community settings) and policy changes (e.g., increased funding to improve access).Qualitative findings have potential to provide the foundation for culturally relevant interventions to improve access to mental health care and engagement in services. What national, regional, or state-level initiatives could the reintroduction ofthe CHSIs be aligned with? IMPROVING COMMUNITY HEALTH In 2013, a pivotal report ofthe National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine), US Health in International Perspective: Shorter Lives, Poorer Health, comprehensively and clearly outlined the health differences and reasons for these differences between the United States and its peer high-income countries, including 16 democracies.6 Sadly, US health ranking was near the bottom as measured by life expectancy, which had improved but not as fast as in peer countries. The smaller gains in US life expectancy were actually reversed before the COVID-19 pandemic, from a peak of 78.84 years in 2014 to 78.54 years through 2018.7 And during the pandemic, the US media has shone a bright light on the US health disadvantage by highlighting greater COVID19-associated mortality in the United States than reported in peer countries.8 In the wake ofthe National Research Council and Institute of Medicine report, the American Public Health Association began an initiative to become the healthiest nation in a generation (by 2030), which included a strategy to promote the building of safe and healthy communities because the average life span across the nation is rooted in the health of communities.9 If data on community health outcomes and determinants are not widely accessible to communities, gaps in knowledge will remain about current community health and any health progress. Furthermore, the National Prevention Strategy also steers communities to implement evidence-based recommendations strategically to create healthy and safe community environments, integrate clinical and community preventive services locally, empower people, and eliminate health disparities in priority activities of tobacco-free living, preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use, healthy eating, active living, injury and violence-free living, and promotion of reproductive and sexual health and mental health and emotional wellbeing.14 Similarly, Healthy People 2020, and now Healthy People 2030, also calls for communities to use their goals and objectives to set local priorities.11 Setting effective community target objectives will depend on current knowledge of health outcomes and health determinants at the level of community action as well as accessible data for surveillance and monitoring ofthe targets. CONCLUSIONS Although national initiatives, such as the Federal Data Strategy and the National Committee on Vital Health Statistics, identify key health indicators to move the entire health status ofthe nation forward, local communities often need additional data, including smaller geographic areas of data for community health planning, interventions, programs, evaluation, and monitoring ultimately for advocacy and public health action.

OBJECTIVE Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic risk factor for many mental health disorders and develops in the context of early trauma exposure. Research suggests intergenerational risk associated with trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such that maternal trauma experiences and related symptoms can negatively impact child outcomes across development. The goals of the present study were to examine child and mother correlates of child PTSD symptoms and the unique roles of child and maternal emotion dysregulation in understanding child PTSD symptoms. METHOD Subjects included 105 African American mother-child dyads from an urban hospital serving primarily low-income minority individuals. RESULTS Correlational results showed that child trauma exposure, child emotion dysregulation, maternal depressive symptoms, maternal emotion dysregulation, and potential for maternal child abuse all were significantly associated with child PTSD symptoms (ps < 0.05). Hierarchical linear regression models revealed that child trauma exposure, maternal depression, and maternal abuse potential accounted for 29% of the variance in child PTSD symptoms (p < 0.001). Both child emotion dysregulation (Rchange² = 0.14, p < .001) and maternal emotion dysregulation (Rchange² = 0.04, p < .05) were significantly associated with child PTSD symptoms independent of other risk factors and potential for maternal abuse was no longer a significant predictor. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that maternal emotion dysregulation may be an important factor in influencing their child's PTSD symptoms above and beyond child-specific variables. Both maternal and child emotion dysregulation could be valuable treatment targets for improving maternal mental health and parenting behaviors and bolstering child health outcomes, thus reducing intergenerational transmission of risk associated with trauma. Covid-19 pandemisi hem süreç olarak hem de getirdiği kısıtlamalar dolayısıyla bireylerin ruh sağlığı üzerinde olumsuz etkiler yaratmıştır. Özellikle incinebilir gruplardan biri olan göçmenler hem göçün kendisinin getirdiği güçlükler hem de Covid-19’a uygun olmayan yaşam koşulları nedeniyle pandemiden daha da olumsuz etkilenmiştir. Tüm bu olumsuzluklar göçmenlerin psikososyal sorunlar yaşamalarına neden olmuş ve ruh sağlığı yönünden bir tehdit oluşturmuştur. Literatürde göçmenlerin yaşadıkları psikososyal sorunları ve ruh sağlıklarını ele alan sınırlı sayıda çalışmaya rastlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Covid-19 pandemisinde göçmenlerin yaşadığı psikososyal sorunların ve ruh sağlıklarının değerlendirilmesine yönelik çalışmaların gözden geçirilmesi ve bu çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçların sistematik bir şekilde incelenmesidir. Konu ile ilgili “PubMed”, “Web of Science”, “Scopus” “GoogleScholar” ve “ScienceDirect” elektronik veri tabanları taranmıştır. Tarama yapılırken her bir veri tabanı için de anahtar kelime ve kombinasyonları olarak “göçmen, psikososyal sorun, Covid-19 pandemisi, migrants, migrant workers, Covid-19 pandemic, mental health issues, psychosocial issues” kullanılmıştır. Dahil edilme kriterlerine uyan 17 çalışma incelenmiştir. Çalışmaların örneklem sayıları 10 ila 28.853 arasında değişmektedir. Elde edilen veriler sonucunda Covid-19 pandemisinde göçmenlerin en sık yaşadığı psikososyal sorunlar depresyon, anksiyete, distres, umutsuzluk, sosyoekonomik düzeyde azalma, sosyal izolasyon olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda göçmenlerin Covid-19 pandemisinde yaşadıkları birçok sorunun ruh sağlıklarını olumsuz etkilediği bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen kanıtların Covid-19 pandemisinde göçmenlerin psikososyal açıdan değerlendirilmesi için literatüre katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir., The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of individuals due to both the process and the restrictions it imposes. Migrants, especially one of the vulnerable groups, have been adversely affected by the pandemic due to both the difficulties brought by the migration itself and the living conditions unsuitable for Covid-19. All these negative situations caused the migrants to experience psychosocial problems and created a threat in terms of mental health. A limited number of studies have been found in the literature on the psychosocial problems and mental health of migrants. The aim of this study is to review the studies on the evaluation of psychosocial problems and mental health of immigrants during the Covid-19 pandemic and to systematically examine the results of these studies. Systematic searches were conducted in “PubMed”, “Web of Science”, “ScienceDirect” and “Scopus” database with using to ‘migrants, migrant workers, Covid-19 pandemic, mental health, psychosocial issues’ keywords and combinations. Seventeen studies were included in the systematic review. The sample size of the studies varies between 10 and 28.853. As a result of the data, it was determined that the most common psychosocial problems of migrants in the Covid-19 pandemic are depression, anxiety, distress, hopelessness, decrease in socioeconomic level, and social isolation. As a result of the study, it was found that many psychosocial problems that migrants experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected their mental health. The evidence determined in this study may guide the psychosocial evaluation of migrants in Covid-19 pandemic.
