We present a new high-precision, JWST-based, strong lensing model for the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at $z=0.3072$. By combining the deep, high-resolution JWST imaging from the GLASS-JWST and UNCOVER programs and a Director's Discretionary Time program, with newly obtained VLT/MUSE data, we identify 32 multiple images from 11 background sources lensed by two external sub-clusters at distances of ~160" from the main cluster. The new MUSE observations enable the first spectroscopic confirmation of a multiple image system in the external clumps. Moreover, the re-analysis of the spectro-photometric archival and JWST data yields 27 additional multiple images in the main cluster. The new lens model is constrained by 149 multiple images ($\sim66\%$ more than in our previous Bergamini et al. 2023 model) covering an extended redshift range between 1.03 and 9.76. The subhalo mass component of the cluster includes 177 member galaxies down to $m_{\rm F160W}=21$, 163 of which are spectroscopically confirmed. Internal velocity dispersions are measured for 85 members. The new lens model is characterized by a remarkably low scatter between predicted and observed positions of the multiple images (0.43"). This precision is unprecedented given the large multiple image sample, the complexity of the cluster mass distribution, and the large modeled area. The improved accuracy and resolution of the cluster total mass distribution provides a robust magnification map over a $\sim\!45$ arcmin$^2$ area, which is critical for inferring the intrinsic physical properties of the highly magnified, high-$z$ sources. We use hydrodynamical cosmological simulations to test the differences between cold and self-interacting dark matter models (CDM and SIDM) in the mass range of massive galaxies ($10^{12}M_{\odot}h^{-1}10^{13}M_{\odot}h^{-1}$) show cored profiles, while the least massive ones ($M10^{11}M_{\odot}$, a distinctive signature of SIDM. At the same time, the distribution of Einstein radii, derived from both CDM and SIDM hydro runs, is comparable to observed samples of strong lenses with $M>10^{13}M_{\odot}h^{-1}$. We conclude that the interplay between self-interaction and baryons can greatly reduce the expected differences between CDM and SIDM models at this mass scale, and that techniques able to separate the dark and luminous mass in the inner regions of galaxies are needed to constrain self-interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

The combination and cross-correlation of the upcoming $Euclid$ data with cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements is a source of great expectation since it will provide the largest lever arm of epochs, ranging from recombination to structure formation across the entire past light cone. In this work, we present forecasts for the joint analysis of $Euclid$ and CMB data on the cosmological parameters of the standard cosmological model and some of its extensions. This work expands and complements the recently published forecasts based on $Euclid$-specific probes, namely galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and their cross-correlation. With some assumptions on the specifications of current and future CMB experiments, the predicted constraints are obtained from both a standard Fisher formalism and a posterior-fitting approach based on actual CMB data. Compared to a $Euclid$-only analysis, the addition of CMB data leads to a substantial impact on constraints for all cosmological parameters of the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter model, with improvements reaching up to a factor of ten. For the parameters of extended models, which include a redshift-dependent dark energy equation of state, non-zero curvature, and a phenomenological modification of gravity, improvements can be of the order of two to three, reaching higher than ten in some cases. We report the detection of a high density of redshift $z\approx 10$ galaxies behind the foreground cluster Abell 2744, selected from imaging data obtained recently with NIRCam onboard {\it JWST} by three programs -- GLASS-JWST, UNCOVER, and DDT\#2756. To ensure robust estimates of the lensing magnification $μ$, we use an improved version of our model that exploits the first epoch of NIRCam images and newly obtained MUSE spectra, and avoids regions with $μ>5$ where the uncertainty may be higher. We detect seven bright $z\approx 10$ galaxies with demagnified rest-frame $-22 \lesssim M_{\rm UV}\lesssim -19$ mag, over an area of $\sim37$ sq. arcmin. Taking into account photometric incompleteness and the effects of lensing on luminosity and cosmological volume, we find that the density of $z\approx 10$ galaxies in the field is about $10\times$ ($3\times$) larger than the average at $M_{UV}\approx -21~ (-20)$ mag reported so far. The density is even higher when considering only the GLASS-JWST data, which are the deepest and the least affected by magnification and incompleteness. The GLASS-JWST field contains 5 out of 7 galaxies, distributed along an apparent filamentary structure of 2 Mpc in projected length, and includes a close pair of candidates with $M_{\rm UV}< -20$ mag having a projected separation of only 16 kpc. These findings suggest the presence of a $z\approx 10$ overdensity in the field. In addition to providing excellent targets for efficient spectroscopic follow-up observations, our study confirms the high density of bright galaxies observed in early {\it JWST} observations, but calls for multiple surveys along independent lines of sight to achieve an unbiased estimate of their average density and a first estimate of their clustering., Accepted for publication in ApJL, 13 pages, 4 figures

We present a new high-precision parametric strong lensing model of the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403, at z=0.396, which takes advantage of the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF), with 17.1h integration in the northeast region of the cluster, and Hubble Frontier Fields data. The $��$CDM model of structure formation makes strong predictions on concentration and shape of DM (dark matter) halos, which are determined by mass accretion processes. Comparison between predicted shapes and observations provides a geometric test of the $��$CDM model. Accurate and precise measurements needs a full three-dimensional analysis of the cluster mass distribution. We accomplish this with a multi-probe 3D analysis of the X-ray regular CLASH (Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble) clusters combining strong and weak lensing, X-ray photometry and spectroscopy, and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The cluster shapes and concentrations are consistent with $��$CDM predictions. The CLASH clusters are randomly oriented, as expected given the sample selection criteria. Shapes agree with numerical results for DM-only halos, which hints at baryonic physics being not so effective in making halos rounder., v2: 8 pages, in press on ApJL. The next generation of large sky photometric surveys will finally be able to use arc statistics as a cosmological probe. Here we present the first of a series of papers on this topic. In particular, we study how arc counts are sensitive to the variation of two cosmological parameters: the (total) matter density parameter, $��_m$, and the normalisation of the primordial power spectrum, expressed in terms of $��_8$. Both these parameters influence the abundances of collapsed structures and their internal structure. We compute the expected number of gravitational arcs with various length-to-width ratios in mock light cones, by varying these cosmological parameters in the ranges $0.1\leq��_m\leq0.5$ and $0.6\leq��_8\leq 1$. We find that the arc counts dependence on $��_m$ and $��_8$ is similar, but not identical, to that of the halo counts. We investigate how the precision of the constraints on the cosmological parameters based on arc counts depends on the survey area. We find that the constraining power of arc statistics degrades critically only for surveys covering an area smaller than $10\%$ of the whole sky. Finally, we consider the case in which the search for arcs is done only in frames where galaxy clusters have been previously identified. Adopting the selection function for galaxy clusters expected to be detected from photometric data in future wide surveys, we find that less than $10\%$ of the arcs will be missed, with only a small degradation of the corresponding cosmological constraints., 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The aim of this work is to perform a systematic study of the measures of the mass and concentration estimated by fitting the convergence profile of a large sample of mock galaxy cluster size lenses, created with the publicly available code MOKA. We found that the main contribution to the bias in mass and in concentration is due to the halo triaxiality and second to the presence of substructures within the host halo virial radius. We show that knowing the cluster elongation along the line of sight helps in correcting the mass bias, but still keeps a small negative bias for the concentration. If these mass and concentration biases will characterize the galaxy cluster sample of a wide field survey it will be difficult to well recover within one sigma the cosmological parameters that mainly influence the c - M relation, using as reference a 3D c - M relation measured in cosmological N-body simulation. In this work we propose how to correct the c - M relation for projection effects and for adiabatic contraction and suggest to use these as reference for real observed data. Photometric redshifts are a key tool to extract as much information as possible from planned cosmic shear experiments. In this work we aim to test the performances that can be achieved with observations in the near-infrared from space and in the optical from the ground. This is done by performing realistic simulations of multi-band observations of a patch of the sky, and submitting these mock images to software usually applied to real images to extract the photometry and then a redshift estimate for each galaxy. In this way we mimic the most relevant sources of uncertainty present in real data analysis, including blending and light pollution between galaxies. As an example we adopt the infrared setup of the ESA-proposed Euclid mission, while we simulate different observations in the optical, modifying filters, exposure times and seeing values. Finally, we consider directly some future ground-based experiments, such as LSST, Pan-Starrs and DES. The results highlight the importance of u-band observations, especially to discriminate between low (z < 0.5) and high (z ~ 3) redshifts, and the need for good observing sites, with seeing FWHM < 1. arcsec. The former of these indications clearly favours the LSST experiment as a counterpart for space observations, while for the other experiments we need to exclude at least 15 % of the galaxies to reach a precision in the photo-zs equal to $$ < 0.05., Comment: 11 pages, to be published in MNRAS. We show the effectiveness of strong lensing in the characterisation of Lyman continuum emission from faint L~ 3. Past observations of L>~L* galaxies at redshift >~3 have provided upper limits of the average escape fraction of ionising radiation of fesc~5%. Galaxies with relatively high fesc (>10%) seem to be particularly rare at these luminosities, there is therefore the need to explore fainter limits. Before the advent of giant ground based telescopes, one viable way to probe fesc down to 0.05-0.15L* is to exploit strong lensing magnification. This is investigated with Monte Carlo simulations that take into account the current observational capabilities. Adopting a lensing cross-section of 10 arcmin^2 within which the magnification is higher than 1 (achievable with about 4-5 galaxy clusters), with a U-band survey depth of 30(30.5) (AB, 1-sigma), it is possible to constrain fesc for z~3 star-forming galaxies down to 15(10)% at 3-sigma for L, 5 pages, 2 figures, letter accepted for publication in MNRAS

The early Universe at redshift z\sim6-11 marks the reionization of the intergalactic medium, following the formation of the first generation of stars. However, those young galaxies at a cosmic age of \lesssim 500 million years (Myr, at z \gtrsim 10) remain largely unexplored as they are at or beyond the sensitivity limits of current large telescopes. Gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters enables the detection of high-redshift galaxies that are fainter than what otherwise could be found in the deepest images of the sky. We report the discovery of an object found in the multi-band observations of the cluster MACS1149+22 that has a high probability of being a gravitationally magnified object from the early universe. The object is firmly detected (12 sigma) in the two reddest bands of HST/WFC3, and not detected below 1.2 {\mu}m, matching the characteristics of z\sim9 objects. We derive a robust photometric redshift of z = 9.6 \pm 0.2, corresponding to a cosmic age of 490 \pm 15Myr (i.e., 3.6% of the age of the Universe). The large number of bands used to derive the redshift estimate make it one of the most accurate estimates ever obtained for such a distant object. The significant magnification by cluster lensing (a factor of \sim15) allows us to analyze the object's ultra-violet and optical luminosity in its rest-frame, thus enabling us to constrain on its stellar mass, star-formation rate and age. If the galaxy is indeed at such a large redshift, then its age is less than 200 Myr (at the 95% confidence level), implying a formation redshift of zf \lesssim 14. The object is the first z>9 candidate that is bright enough for detailed spectroscopic studies with JWST, demonstrating the unique potential of galaxy cluster fields for finding highly magnified, intrinsically faint galaxies at the highest redshifts., Comment: Submitted to the Nature Journal. 39 Pages, 13 figures

The Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) is a 524-orbit multi-cycle treasury program to use the gravitational lensing properties of 25 galaxy clusters to accurately constrain their mass distributions. The survey, described in detail in this paper, will definitively establish the degree of concentration of dark matter in the cluster cores, a key prediction of CDM. The CLASH cluster sample is larger and less biased than current samples of space-based imaging studies of clusters to similar depth, as we have minimized lensing-based selection that favors systems with overly dense cores. Specifically, twenty CLASH clusters are solely X-ray selected. The X-ray selected clusters are massive (kT > 5 keV; 5 - 30 x 10^14 M_solar) and, in most cases, dynamically relaxed. Five additional clusters are included for their lensing strength (Einstein radii > 35 arcsec at z_source = 2) to further quantify the lensing bias on concentration, to yield high resolution dark matter maps, and to optimize the likelihood of finding highly magnified high-redshift (z > 7) galaxies. The high magnification, in some cases, provides angular resolutions unobtainable with any current UVOIR facility and can yield z > 7 candidates bright enough for spectroscopic follow-up. A total of 16 broadband filters, spanning the near-UV to near-IR, are employed for each 20-orbit campaign on each cluster. These data are used to measure precise (sigma_phz < 0.02(1+z)) photometric redshifts for dozens of newly discovered multiply-lensed images per cluster. Observations of each cluster are spread over 8 epochs to enable a search, primarily in the parallel fields, for Type Ia supernovae at z > 1 to improve constraints on the time dependence of the dark energy equation of state and the evolution of such supernovae in an epoch when the universe is matter dominated., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements, 22 pages, 16 figures. We make an exploratory study of how well dark energy models can be constrained using lensed arcs at different redshifts behind cluster lenses. Arcs trace the critical curves of clusters, and the growth of critical curves with source redshift is sensitive to the dark-energy equation of state. Using analytical models and numerically simulated clusters, we explore the key factors involved in using cluster arcs as a probe of dark energy. We quantify the sensitivity to lens mass, concentration and ellipticity with analytical models that include the effects of dark energy on halo structure. We show with simple examples how degeneracies between mass models and cosmography may be broken using arcs at multiple redshifts or additional constraints on the lens density profile. However we conclude that the requirements on the data are so stringent that it is very unlikely that robust constraints can be obtained from individual clusters. We argue that surveys of clusters, analyzed in conjunction with numerical simulations, are a more promising prospect for arc-cosmography. We use such numerically simulated clusters to estimate how large a sample of clusters/arcs could provide interesting constraints on dark energy models. We focus on the scatter produced by differences in the mass distribution of individual clusters. We find from our sample of simulated clusters that at least 1000 pairs of arcs are needed to obtain constraints if the mass distribution of individual clusters is taken to be undetermined. On May 27th 2010, the Italian astronomical community learned with concern that the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) was going to be suppressed, and that its employees were going to be transferred to the National Research Council (CNR). It was not clear if this applied to all employees (i.e. also to researchers hired on short-term contracts), and how this was going to happen in practice. In this letter, we give a brief historical overview of INAF and present a short chronicle of the few eventful days that followed. Meneghetti et al. (2020) recently reported an excess of galaxy-galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) in galaxy clusters compared to expectations from the LCDM cosmological model. Theoretical estimates of the GGSL probability are based on the analysis of numerical hydrodynamical simulations in the LCDM cosmology. We quantify the impact of the numerical resolution and AGN feedback scheme adopted in cosmological simulations on the predicted GGSL probability and determine if varying these simulation properties can alleviate the gap with observations. We repeat the analysis of Meneghetti et al. (2020) on cluster-size halos simulated with different mass and force resolutions and implementing several independent AGN feedback schemes. We find that improving the mass resolution by a factor of ten and twenty-five, while using the same galaxy formation model that includes AGN feedback, does not affect the GGSL probability. We find similar results regarding the choice of gravitational softening. On the contrary, adopting an AGN feedback scheme that is less efficient at suppressing gas cooling and star formation leads to an increase in the GGSL probability by a factor between three and six. However, we notice that such simulations form overly massive subhalos whose contribution to the lensing cross-section would be significant while their Einstein radii are too large to be consistent with the observations. The primary contributors to the observed GGSL cross-sections are subhalos with smaller masses, that are compact enough to become critical for lensing.
