Abstract

We develop Generational Wealth Accounts (GWA): the first set of balance sheets, broken down by generations, to include all human capital, tangible wealth, financial wealth, and transfer wealth, and the uses to which these resources are put. We then use them to measure the size, nature (public or private; capital or current) and direction of inter-generational transfers and assess the sustainability of public and private consumption plans. We confirm that public sector consumption in the UK is unsustainable but show that the private sector is close to balance. Aggregate consumption plans are therefore unsustainable. Although public sector finances worsened significantly over the crisis, the private sector balance improved and capital transfers to the young increased, more than fully offsetting this deterioration. We find that increases in house prices redistributed resources away from the young and towards the old but had little effect on overall sustainability.

Abstract

We present a novel methodology for fast bottom-up creation of large-scale semantic similarity resources to support development and evaluation of NLP systems. Our work targets verb similarity, but the methodology is equally applicable to other parts of speech. Our approach circumvents the bottleneck of slow and expensive manual development of lexical resources by leveraging semantic intuitions of native speakers and adapting a spatial multi-arrangement approach from cognitive neuroscience, used before only with visual stimuli, to lexical stimuli. Our approach critically obtains judgments of word similarity in the context of a set of related words, rather than of word pairs in isolation. We also handle lexical ambiguity as a natural consequence of a two-phase process where verbs are placed in broad semantic classes prior to the fine-grained spatial similarity judgments. Our proposed design produces a large-scale verb resource comprising 17 relatedness-based classes and a verb similarity dataset containing similarity scores for 29,721 unique verb pairs and 825 target verbs, which we release with this paper.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the first analysis of bottom-up manual semantic clustering of verbs in three languages, English, Polish and Croatian. Verb classes including syntactic and semantic information have been shown to support many NLP tasks by allowing abstraction from individual words and thereby alleviating data sparseness. The availability of such classifications is however still non-existent or limited in most languages. While a range of automatic verb classification approaches have been proposed, high-quality resources and gold standards are needed for evaluation and to improve the performance of NLP systems. We investigate whether semantic verb classes in three different languages can be reliably obtained from native speakers without linguistics training. The analysis of inter-annotator agreement shows an encouraging degree of overlap in the classifications produced for each language individually, as well as across all three languages. Comparative examination of the resultant classifications provides interesting insights into cross-linguistic semantic commonalities and patterns of ambiguity.

Abstract

We present an analysis of the main systematic effects that could impact the measurement of CMB polarization with the proposed CORE space mission. We employ timeline-to-map simulations to verify that the CORE instrumental set-up and scanning strategy allow us to measure sky polarization to a level of accuracy adequate to the mission science goals. We also show how the CORE observations can be processed to mitigate the level of contamination by potentially worrying systematics, including intensity-to-polarization leakage due to bandpass mismatch, asymmetric main beams, pointing errors and correlated noise. We use analysis techniques that are well validated on data from current missions such as Planck to demonstrate how the residual contamination of the measurements by these effects can be brought to a level low enough not to hamper the scientific capability of the mission, nor significantly increase the overall error budget. We also present a prototype of the CORE photometric calibration pipeline, based on that used for Planck, and discuss its robustness to systematics, showing how CORE can achieve its calibration requirements. While a fine-grained assessment of the impact of systematics requires a level of knowledge of the system that can only be achieved in a future study phase, the analysis presented here strongly suggests that the main areas of concern for the CORE mission can be addressed using existing knowledge, techniques and algorithms.

Abstract

We discuss the potential of a next generation space-borne Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment for studies of extragalactic sources. Our analysis has particular bearing on the definition of the future space project, CORE, that has been submitted in response to ESA's call for a Medium-size mission opportunity as the successor of the Planck satellite. Even though the effective telescope size will be somewhat smaller than that of Planck, CORE will have a considerably better angular resolution at its highest frequencies, since, in contrast with Planck, it will be diffraction limited at all frequencies. The improved resolution implies a considerable decrease of the source confusion, i.e. substantially fainter detection limits. In particular, CORE will detect thousands of strongly lensed high-z galaxies distributed over the full sky. The extreme brightness of these galaxies will make it possible to study them, via follow-up observations, in extraordinary detail. Also, the CORE resolution matches the typical sizes of high-z galaxy proto-clusters much better than the Planck resolution, resulting in a much higher detection efficiency; these objects will be caught in an evolutionary phase beyond the reach of surveys in other wavebands. Furthermore, CORE will provide unique information on the evolution of the star formation in virialized groups and clusters of galaxies up to the highest possible redshifts. Finally, thanks to its very high sensitivity, CORE will detect the polarized emission of thousands of radio sources and, for the first time, of dusty galaxies, at mm and sub-mm wavelengths, respectively.

Abstract

Lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is now a well-developed probe of the clustering of the large-scale mass distribution over a broad range of redshifts. By exploiting the non-Gaussian imprints of lensing in the polarization of the CMB, the CORE mission will allow production of a clean map of the lensing deflections over nearly the full-sky. The number of high-S/N modes in this map will exceed current CMB lensing maps by a factor of 40, and the measurement will be sample-variance limited on all scales where linear theory is valid. Here, we summarise this mission product and discuss the science that will follow from its power spectrum and the cross-correlation with other clustering data. For example, the summed mass of neutrinos will be determined to an accuracy of 17 meV combining CORE lensing and CMB two-point information with contemporaneous measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillation feature in the clustering of galaxies, three times smaller than the minimum total mass allowed by neutrino oscillation measurements. Lensing has applications across many other science goals of CORE, including the search for B-mode polarization from primordial gravitational waves. Here, lens-induced B-modes will dominate over instrument noise, limiting constraints on the power spectrum amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. With lensing reconstructed by CORE, one can "delens" the observed polarization internally, reducing the lensing B-mode power by 60 %. This can be improved to 70 % by combining lensing and measurements of the cosmic infrared background from CORE, leading to an improvement of a factor of 2.5 in the error on the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves compared to no delensing (in the null hypothesis of no primordial B-modes). Lensing measurements from CORE will allow calibration of the halo masses of the tens of thousands of galaxy clusters that it will find, with constraints dominated by the clean polarization-based estimators. The 19 frequency channels proposed for CORE will allow accurate removal of Galactic emission from CMB maps. We present initial findings that show that residual Galactic foreground contamination will not be a significant source of bias for lensing power spectrum measurements with CORE.

Abstract

We describe a space-borne, multi-band, multi-beam polarimeter aiming at a precise and accurate measurement of the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The instrument is optimized to be compatible with the strict budget requirements of a medium-size space mission within the Cosmic Vision Programme of the European Space Agency. The instrument has no moving parts, and uses arrays of diffraction-limited Kinetic Inductance Detectors to cover the frequency range from 60 GHz to 600 GHz in 19 wide bands, in the focal plane of a 1.2 m aperture telescope cooled at 40 K, allowing for an accurate extraction of the CMB signal from polarized foreground emission. The projected CMB polarization survey sensitivity of this instrument, after foregrounds removal, is 1.7 μKċarcmin. The design is robust enough to allow, if needed, a downscoped version of the instrument covering the 100 GHz to 600 GHz range with a 0.8 m aperture telescope cooled at 85 K, with a projected CMB polarization survey sensitivity of 3.2 μKċarcmin.

Abstract

The WHO scheme for prothrombin time (PT) standardization has been limited in application, because of its difficulties in implementation, particularly the need for mandatory manual PT testing and for local provision of thromboplastin international reference preparations (IRP).The value of a new simpler procedure to derive international normalized ratio (INR), the PT/INR Line, based on only five European Concerted Action on Anticoagulation (ECAA) calibrant plasmas certified by experienced centres has been assessed in two independent exercises using a range of commercial thromboplastins and coagulometers. INRs were compared with manual certified values with thromboplastin IRP from expert centres and in the second study also with INRs from local ISI calibrations.In the first study with the PT/INR Line, 8.7% deviation from certified INRs was reduced to 1.1% with human reagents, and from 7.0% to 2.6% with rabbit reagents. In the second study, deviation was reduced from 11.2% to 0.4% with human reagents by both local ISI calibration and the PT/INR Line. With rabbit reagents, 10.4% deviation was reduced to 1.1% with both procedures; 4.9% deviation was reduced to 0.5% with bovine/combined reagents with local ISI calibrations and to 2.9% with the PT/INR Line. Mean INR dispersion was reduced with all thromboplastins and automated systems using the PT/INR Line.The procedure using the PT/INR Line provides reliable INR derivation without the need for WHO ISI calibration across the range of locally used commercial thromboplastins and automated PT systems included in two independent international studies.? 2010 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Abstract

Motivation: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is increasingly used to study gene expression at the level of individual cells. However, preparing raw sequence data for further analysis is not a straightforward process. Biases, artifacts and other sources of unwanted variation are present in the data, requiring substantial time and effort to be spent on pre-processing, quality control (QC) and normalization. Results: We have developed the R/Bioconductor package scater to facilitate rigorous pre-processing, quality control, normalization and visualization of scRNA-seq data. The package provides a convenient, flexible workflow to process raw sequencing reads into a high-quality expression dataset ready for downstream analysis. scater provides a rich suite of plotting tools for single-cell data and a flexible data structure that is compatible with existing tools and can be used as infrastructure for future software development. Abstract

Objective: To evaluate growth and tolerability of infants fed a formula supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from a new strain of Schizochytrium sp (DHASCO®-B) microalgae. Methods: Healthy term infants (n=159) with weights ≥2500 gram were randomized on or before 14th day of life (DOL) to receive either DHASCO®-B or reference formula (DHASCO®) obtained from Crypthecodinium cohnii until DOL 120. Both formulas also contained arachidonic acid (ARA). Assessments included weight, length, weight/length ratio, head circumference, red blood cell (RBC) DHA and other fatty acids, metabolic panel, safety, and tolerance. Results: The rate of mean daily weight gain (±SD) at DOL 120 was not significantly different between the formulas, 29.1 ± 5.92 grams/day versus 29.9 ± 7.40 grams/day for DHASCO® and DHASCO®-B, respectively and was equivalent (90% CI: -2.94 to 1.31; p=0.553). There was no significant difference between formulas in actual weight gain over time, i.e. DOL 30, 60, 90 and 120 (p=0.252), including by gender. Other anthropometric variables were also not different between the 2 groups. RBC DHA levels at DOL 120 were bioequivalent between the formulas (ratio of geometric means was 96.85%). There was no difference between formulas in any of the tolerance variables (watery stools, hard stools, gassiness, spitting up and fussiness), and no clinically meaningful difference in adverse events or laboratory values. Conclusions: There was no significant difference in daily weight gain of healthy term infants fed a formula supplemented with DHA from Crypthecodinium cohnii versus the new strain of Schizochytrium sp microalgae. Overall weight gains were equivalent between the two formula groups. Further, RBC DHA levels were bioequivalent, and there was no difference in infant tolerability or parent satisfaction. In summary, growth, tolerability and safety profiles for the formulas were similar and typical for this age group.

Abstract

We report the discovery of a wide co-moving substellar companion to the nearby ($D=67.5\pm1.1$ pc) A3V star $��$ Delphini based on imaging and follow-up spectroscopic observations obtained during the course of our Volume-limited A-Star (VAST) multiplicity survey. $��$ Del was observed over a five-year baseline with adaptive optics, revealing the presence of a previously-unresolved companion with a proper motion consistent with that of the A-type primary. The age of the $��$ Del system was estimated as $525\pm125$ Myr based on the position of the primary on the colour-magnitude and temperature-luminosity diagrams. Using intermediate-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy, the spectrum of $��$ Del B is shown to be consistent with a mid-L dwarf (L$5\pm2$), at a temperature of $1650\pm200$ K. Combining the measured near-infrared magnitude of $��$ Del B with the estimated temperature leads to a model-dependent mass estimate of $50\pm15$ M$_{\rm Jup}$, corresponding to a mass ratio of $q=0.019\pm0.006$. At a projected separation of $910\pm14$ au, $��$ Del B is among the most widely-separated and extreme-mass ratio substellar companions to a main-sequence star resolved to-date, providing a rare empirical constraint of the formation of low-mass ratio companions at extremely wide separations., 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2014 September 25. We apply scintillation theory to stellar signal fluctuations in the high-resolution, high signal/noise, dual-wavelength data from the MMT observation of the 2007 March 18 occultation of P445.3 by Pluto. A well-defined high wavenumber cutoff in the fluctuations is consistent with viscous-thermal dissipation of buoyancy waves (internal gravity waves) in Pluto’s high atmosphere, and provides strong evidence that the underlying density fluctuations are governed by the gravity-wave dispersion relation., United States. Abstract

We present results on addressee identification in four-participants face-to-face meetings using Bayesian Network and Naive Bayes classifiers. First, we investigate how well the addressee of a dialogue act can be predicted based on gaze, utterance and conversational context features. Then, we explore whether information about meeting context can aid classifiers’ performances. Both classifiers perform the best when conversational context and utterance features are combined with speaker’s gaze information. The classifiers show little gain from information about meeting context.

Abstract

Recent results indicate the stellar initial mass function is not a strong function of star-forming environment or ``initial conditions'' (e.g. Meyer et al. 2000). Some studies suggest that a universal IMF may extend to sub-stellar masses (see however Briceno et al. 2002). Yet most of this work is confined to star-forming environments within 1 kpc of the Sun. In order to probe the universality of the IMF over a wider range of parameter space (metalicity, ambient pressure, magnetic field strength) new techniques are required. We begin by summarizing our approach to deriving the sub-stellar IMF down to the opacity-limit for fragmentation using NGC 1333 as an example. Next, we describe results from simulations using the observed point-spread function of the new 6.5m MMT adaptive optics system and examine the confusion-limited sensitivity to low mass stars in rich star-forming clusters out to 0.5 Mpc. We also present preliminary results from observations with this system of the W51 star-forming complex. Finally, we outline a new technique to estimate the ratio of high to low mass stars in unresolved stellar populations, such as the massive star clusters observed in interacting galaxies (e.g. Mengel et al. 2002). Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: MR imaging and MR spectroscopy are increasingly being used to determine response to pharmacologic therapy. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is characterized by abnormal cerebral metabolites, yet the response to lactulose and other anti-HE measures is still primarily determined by using arbitrary categorical clinical rating scales, rather than MR spectroscopy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether MR spectroscopy could demonstrate relevant neurometabolic changes associated with lactulose therapy and thereby provide further support for the use of MR spectroscopy in clinical trials. METHODS: Ten control subjects and 23 patients with grades I to III HE were studied by proton MR spectroscopy with imaging parameters of 2000/26 (TR/TE). Metabolic ratios were calculated for myo-inositol (mI)/creatine (Cre), choline (Cho)/Cre, (glutamine + glutamate) (Glx)/Cre, N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/Cre, and (Cho + mI)/Glx. A time series design trial was used in which eight patients with HE were compared before and after lactulose therapy (60 mL by mouth three times per day). RESULTS: Relative to control subjects, HE was characterized by 43%, 64%, and 5% reductions, respectively, in mI/Cre, (Cho + mI)/Glx, and Cho/Cre. In comparison, Glx/Cre was increased by 75% and NAA/Cre was not changed. Therapy with lactulose was associated with increases of 29%, 37%, and 7%, respectively, in mI/Cre, (Cho + mI)/Glx, and Cho/Cre, as well as respective decreases of 15% and 42%, respectively, in Glx/Cre and HE grade. NAA/Cre did not change with lactulose therapy. CONCLUSION: MR spectroscopy detects neurometabolic changes associated with pharmacologic therapy for HE. The metabolic ratios ml/Cre and (Cho + mI)/Glx are the most sensitive measures of lactulose effect. These data support the expanded use of MR spectroscopy as an adjunctive technique in pharmaceutical development and clinical trials for HE.
