Background: To our knowledge, no nationwide epidemiological study of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) has been conducted. Objective: We examined the epidemiology and clinical features of MOGAD in Japan. Methods: We distributed questionnaires on the clinical characteristics of patients with MOGAD to neurology, pediatric-neurology, and neuro-ophthalmology facilities throughout Japan. Results: In total, 887 patients were identified. The estimated number of total and newly diagnosed MOGAD patients was 1,695 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1483–1907] and 487 (95% CI: 414–560), respectively. The estimated prevalence and incidence were 1.34/100,000 (95% CI: 1.18–1.51) and 0.39/100,000 (95% CI: 0.32–0.44), respectively. The median age at onset was 28 years (range: 0–84 years). At onset, optic neuritis was present in approximately 40% of patients, irrespective of the onset age. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis was more frequent in younger patients, whereas brainstem encephalitis, encephalitis, and myelitis were more frequent in elderly patients. Immunotherapy was highly effective. Conclusion: The prevalence and incidence rates of MOGAD in Japan are similar to those in other countries. Notable characteristics such as the preferential occurrence of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in children exist; however, general characteristics including symptoms and treatment response are common irrespective of the onset age.

Wood is an important material used in decorating human living environment. Knots are prominent features found on wood surface. Moreover, they are commonly considered as undesirable surface defects, which reduce not only the mechanical properties but also the aesthetic qualities of lumber. The effects of visual stimulation using knotty wood on psychological responses among humans have been relatively well investigated. However, only few studies have assessed physiological responses. Hence, the present study aimed to assess whether knotty wood surface can reduce not only psychological but also physiological benefits for humans. Two full-sized knotty wooden-wall images and a clear wooden-wall image were used as visual stimuli using computer graphics techniques. Twenty-eight adult Japanese female university students viewed each image for 90 s in random order. During exposure to the visual stimuli, the oxyhemoglobin concentrations in the left and right prefrontal cortex and heart rate variability were consecutively measured and utilized as indicators of central and autonomic nervous system activities, respectively. In addition, the psychological effects of knotty images were examined using the modified semantic differential method and the Profile of Mood State 2nd Edition. There was no significant difference in the effects of the three images on physiological responses. All visual stimuli more or less promoted psychological comfort and relaxation. However, compared with the clear wooden-wall image, the wooden-wall image with several knots was associated with reduced psychological benefits, and the psychological responses in viewing the wooden-wall image with few knots did not remarkably differ.

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is a rare disorder that causes localized or diffuse inflammatory fibrosis and thickening of the dura mater. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV)-related HP is the most frequent form of HP. Otitis media with AAV (OMAAV) patients with HP are associated with higher rates of both ANCA-negative phenotypes and disease-related mortality. However, few studies have reported the imaging characteristics of HP due to AAV/OMAAV. Therefore, we investigated this issue in the present study.This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with HP between 2011 and 2020 at our hospital. Age, sex, causative disease, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and MRI data were collected from medical records. We compared the locations of MRI enhancement depending on the causative diseases.Of the 18 included patients with HP (mean age, 64.1 ± 2.6 years; range, 33-77 years), 10 (55.6%) were female, 12 (66.7%) were diagnosed with AAV/OMAAV, four (22.2%) were diagnosed as idiopathic, two (11.1%) were diagnosed with invasive Aspergillus mastoiditis. Eleven (61.1%) had cranial neuropathies. Facial nerve paralysis was common in AAV/OMAAV, while abducent nerve paralysis was common in idiopathic HP. Cranial fossa enhancement was most common presentation in patients with HP, whereas inner acoustic canal (IAC) enhancement was seen only in patients with AAV/OMAAV, while HP involving the cavernous sinus was seen only in patients with idiopathic and mastoiditis.HP involving the IAC may be a key factor in diagnosing AAV/OMAAV.

Background: Some patients with a wheat allergy have been reported to show clinical cross-reactivity to barley. However, it is not clear whether the development of barley allergy in patients with a wheat allergy is due to cross-antigenicity between wheat and barley. In our study, we aimed to determine the clinical cross-reactivity and immunological cross-antigenicity of wheat and barley. Methods: We compared the results of barley oral food challenges (OFCs) before oral immunotherapy (OIT) for wheat with those after OIT in nine patients with a wheat allergy to estimate the clinical cross-reactivity of wheat and barley. Moreover, we performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) inhibition and immunoblotting inhibition using serum from seven patients allergic to wheat and barley. Results: Nine patients who had positive barley-OFC results performed before OIT for wheat were all negative on barley-OFC performed after OIT. In ELISA inhibition, preincubation of serum from patients allergic to wheat and barley with a high barley extract concentration inhibited binding of IgE to wheat extract by less than 10%. On the other hand, wheat and barley extracts equally inhibited binding to barley sIgE at high concentrations. In the immunoblotting inhibition test, the spots of wheat were inhibited but weakly by barley extracts, and most of the spots of barley were inhibited even by low concentrations of the wheat and barley extract. Conclusion: We showed that barley allergy associated with wheat allergy is caused by cross-reactivity from wheat. The OIT for wheat was one of the promising options for barley allergy.

This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using an original analysis tool in the compartment model for detecting regional significant coronary artery disease (CAD).Methods and Results: This study analyzed 41 patients (median age, 76 years) with suspected or known CAD who underwent both dynamic SPECT usingA quantitative analysis of dynamic SPECT data facilitated detecting regional CAD. For the LAD artery, the MFR displayed a higher diagnostic performance than the qualitative assessment of conventional myocardial perfusion SPECT.

A knot shadow is a diagram without over/ under information at all crossings. Many knot types are obtained from a knot shadow by assigning over/ under information to each crossing. The purpose of the paper is to observe numbers of knot types obtained from closed 3-braid knot shadows. As a result, we discover that given an arbitary odd integer [Formula: see text], there exists a closed 3-braid knot shadow [Formula: see text] such that the number of [Formula: see text] torus knots is more than that of trivial knots in the knots obtained from [Formula: see text] by assigning over/ under information to each crossing.

Highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are essential to improve the efficiency of water electrolysis. The properties of OER active sites on single-crystal Pt electrodes were examined herein. The OER is markedly enhanced by repeated oxidative and reductive potential cycles on the Pt(111) surface. The OER activity on Pt(111) is nine times higher in the third cycle than that before the potential cycles. OER activation by potential cycling depends on the (111) terrace width, with wider (111) terraces significantly enhancing the OER. The oxidation/reduction of the Pt(111) surface produces atomic-sized vacancies on the terraces that activate the OER. Structural analysis using X-ray diffraction reveals that the active sites formed by potential cycling are defects in the second subsurface Pt layer. Potential cycling induces the bowl-shaped roughening of the electrode surface, wherein high-coordination number Pt atoms at the bottom of the cavities activate the OER.

In pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) after tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair, it is recommended that PVR be performed before the right ventricular end-diastolic volume index (RVEDVI) reaches 170 ml/m2 on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) to normalize the RV volume after PVR. We examined the utility of QRS duration, cardiothoracic ratio (CTR), and plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) as markers of an enlarged RV volume to perform PVR at the optimal timing. We assessed the correlation of QRS duration, CTR, and BNP with RVEDVI and RVESVI on cMRI in 26 patients after TOF repair. Fifteen patients underwent PVR (age, 45.2 ± 11.4 years). The RV volume changes from before to after PVR were investigated. Twelve patients underwent post-PVR cMRI. QRS duration, BNP, and CTR were positively correlated with RVEDVI and RVESVI after TOF repair. The post-PVR QRS duration was also positively correlated with post-PVR RVEDVI (p = 0.017) and RVESVI (p = 0.001). From before to after PVR, in cases with QRS duration ≤ 160 ms, the QRS duration decreased from 110.4 ± 28.9 to 101.8 ± 30.5 ms (p = 0.063). Both RVEDVI and RVESVI decreased to the normal range in 4 of 5 cases. In contrast, in cases with QRS duration > 160 ms, the QRS duration decreased from 183.0 ± 17.4 to 160.3 ± 23.8 ms (p = 0.013); however, RVESVI did not normalize in 6 of 7 cases. A prolonged QRS duration is a useful marker of RVEDVI and RVESVI enlargement after TOF repair. A QRS duration of 160 ms is a sensitive cutoff value for predicting RV volume normalization after PVR.

In alkaline solutions, interfacial cations affect the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of platinum electrodes. However, the effects of cations on the HER activity have not been previously investigated based on interfacial structures.

Herein, the structural effects on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were studied using the high-index planes of Pd in a 0.05 M KOH solution. The examined high-index planes comprised the (111) terraces (n(111) − (111), n(111) − (100) series) and the (100) terrace (n(100) − (111), n(100) − (110) series). The ORR activity increased with an increase in the terrace atomic rows, n, on the surfaces with the (111) terrace. On the surfaces of the (100) terrace, the activity was enhanced when the terrace width was increased 2 ≤ n ≤ 5; however, the activity reaches a plateau on the surfaces with 5 ≤ n. This result differs from that in a 0.1 M HClO4 solution, where the ORR activity is linearly enhanced with an increasing (100) terrace atom density. The ORR activities on the surfaces with the (111) terraces were higher than those with the (100) terraces at 5 ≤ n. The ORR is deactivated with increasing coverage of Pd oxides (θOH) on the surfaces with the same terrace structure, showing that Pd oxides are the blocking species of the ORR, as is the case with Pt electrodes. However, the values of θOH on the surfaces with the (111) terraces are as high as those with the (100) terraces at 5 ≤ n, despite the ORR activities on the surfaces with the (111) terrace being higher than those on the surfaces with (100) terraces.

Summary Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is a life-threatening food allergy triggered by wheat in combination with the second factor such as exercise. The identification of potential genetic risk factors for this allergy might help high-risk individuals before consuming wheat-containing food. We aimed to identify genetic variants associated with WDEIA. A genome-wide association study was conducted in a discovery set of 77 individuals with WDEIA and 924 control subjects via three genetic models. The associations were confirmed in a replication set of 91 affected individuals and 435 control individuals. Summary statistics from the combined set were analyzed by meta-analysis with a random-effect model. In the discovery set, a locus on chromosome 6, rs9277630, was associated with WDEIA in the dominant model (OR = 3.95 [95% CI, 2.31−6.73], p = 7.87 × 10−8). The HLA-DPB1∗02:01:02 allele displayed the most significant association with WDEIA (OR = 4.51 [95% CI, 2.66−7.63], p = 2.28 × 10−9), as determined via HLA imputation following targeted sequencing. The association of the allele with WDEIA was confirmed in replication samples (OR = 3.82 [95% CI, 2.33−6.26], p = 3.03 × 10−8). A meta-analysis performed in the combined set revealed that the HLA-DPB1∗02:01:02 allele was significantly associated with an increased risk of WDEIA (OR = 4.13 [95% CI, 2.89−5.93], p = 1.06 × 10−14). Individuals carrying the HLA-DPB1∗02:01:02 allele have a significantly increased risk of WDEIA. Further validation of these findings in independent multiethnic cohorts is needed.

Interfacial hydrophobic/hydrophilic reaction fields significantly affect various reactions at the electrode surface. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) have been investigated on single crystal Pt electrodes modified with hydrophobic/hydrophilic cations and anion-exchange copolymers in alkaline solutions. In alkali metal hydroxide solutions, Pt (110) exhibits the highest HER/HOR activity in the low-index planes of Pt. On the low-index planes of Pt, the hydrophilicity of the alkali metal cation in the supporting electrolyte activates the HER/HOR depending on its hydration energy. Hydrophilic cations at the interface facilitate the extraction of hydrogen from the hydrated water. The modification of anion-exchange copolymers with a hydrophobic skeleton on Pt (110) further enhanced the HER/HOR activity. The hydrogen bonding network formed around the hydrophobic species facilitated the mobility of water molecules and the OH− as the reactant/product of the HER/HOR. Appropriately forming hydrophilic and hydrophobic reaction fields at the interface improved the HER/HOR activity.

Pt3Fe(111), Pt3Fe(775) = 7(111)–(111), and Pt3Fe(544) = 9(111)–(100) electrodes show the highest activity in the low index planes, n(111)–(111), and n(111)–(100) series of Pt3Fe, respectively. The surfaces of these electrodes were modified with hydrophobic species such as THA+, melamine and ionic liquid ([MTBD][beti]), and the effects on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were studied. All the hydrophobic species improved the ORR activity on all the electrodes examined. The ORR activity of Pt3Fe(111) in 0.1 M HClO4 containing 0.1 µM melamine was 2.1 times higher than that of Pt3Fe(111) without melamine, giving 39 times higher activity than that of bare Pt(111). The durability was improved on all the electrodes examined in melamine containing solution.

Weakening of the poisoning by the specifically adsorbed anions assists in developing next-generation electrocatalysts for use in low-temperature fuel cells. In this study, we evaluated how hydrophobic cations with different alkyl chain lengths affect the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities on the single-crystal Pt surfaces in contact with sulfuric acid solution and Nafion ionomers. Interfacial tetraalkylammonium cations with longer alkyl chains activated the ORR on the Pt(111) surface. In a solution containing tetrahexylammonium cations (THA+), the ORR activities on Pt(111) in sulfuric acid solution and on Nafion-modified Pt(111) in perchloric acid solution were four and eight times higher than those in the solutions without THA+, respectively. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the reduction of the amount of (bi)sulfate anions and the sulfonate group of Nafion adsorbed on Pt(111) due to the presence of THA+. The hydrophobic cations weaken the noncovalent interactions between specifically adsorbed species and promote the ORR.

Purpose: This study aimed to use gadolinium-enhanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) scanning to examine the clinical feasibility of feature-tracking strain (FT-strain) analysis on compressed sensing (CS) cine cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging for detecting myocardial infarction (MI).Methods: We enrolled 37 patients who underwent conventional cine CMR, CS cine CMR, and LGE-CMR scanning to assess cardiovascular disease. FT-strain analysis was used to assess peak circumferential strain (p-CS) based on an 18-segment model in both cine CMR imaging modalities. Based on LGE-CMR imaging findings, myocardial segments were classified as remote, adjacent, subendocardial infarcted, and transmural infarcted. The diagnostic performance of p-CS for detecting MI was compared between CS cine CMR imaging and conventional cine CMR imaging using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.Results: A total of 440 remote, 85 adjacent, 76 subendocardial infarcted, and 65 transmural infarcted segments were diagnosed on LGE-CMR imaging. There were significant between-group differences in p-CS on both conventional and CS cine CMR (p p = 0.15).Conclusion: FT-strain analysis of CS cine CMR imaging may help identify MI; it may be used alongside or instead of conventional CMR imaging.

The oxidation of dopamine (DA) on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was investigated using in situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Voltammogram showed multiple anodic/cathodic peaks for the oxidation/reduction of DA and its oxidized derivatives on the BDD electrode. The oxidation/reduction species on the surface and in solution were assigned using ATR-IR and IRAS, respectively. The anodic oxidation of DA promoted polymerization, and the polymerized DA (PDA) was continuously deposited on BDD without being reduced by potential cycles, which resulted in the irreversible behavior of the voltammogram. A decrease in the oxidation current of DA by potential cycles was due to the deposition of PDA. Some intermediate quinone species, such as dopaminequinone and dopaminechrome, were reversibly reduced to hydroquinone.

Lysozyme chloride is a bactericidal substance that is included as an active ingredient in many medicines and quasi-drugs. We experienced a case of anaphylactic reaction caused by deodorant spray-containing lysozyme chloride.The patient was a 10-year-old girl who had an egg allergy. She visited an emergency department because of urticaria, wheezing, dyspnea, and pallor after she used deodorant spray that contained lysozyme chloride derived from hen's egg white. Results for deodorant spray and lysozyme chloride were positive in both skin prick tests and basophil activation tests. According to the medical history and the results, her condition was diagnosed as an anaphylactic reaction to lysozyme chloride in the deodorant spray.Although ingredient labelling is obligatory for lysozyme chloride in quasi-drugs, lysozyme chloride is not often described to be derived from egg white. It is important to alert patients with egg allergy to avoid lysozyme chloride-containing products.

We conducted measurements of the taking-off motion of a butterfly (Pieris rapae) and numerical simulations using a computational model reflecting its motion. The computational butterfly model is composed of a thorax, an abdomen, and four wings (left and right wings with fore and hind parts), i.e. a six-link, rigid-body system. The present model is more sophisticated than any models that have ever been constructed in existing studies. In the butterfly model, the body trajectory and thoracic pitching angle can be calculated from the equations of motion, whereas the abdominal angle and wings’ joint angles are prescribed by the measured data. We calculated the flow field, aerodynamic force and torque generated by the butterfly model using the immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method. As a result, the butterfly generates the horizontal vortex ring and aerodynamic lift force during the downstroke, while it generates the vertical vortex ring and aerodynamic thrust force during the upstroke. The leg impulsion is essential in the upward motion of the taking-off butterfly rather than the aerodynamic lift force by the flapping wings. The inertial forces of the abdomen and wings are comparable in magnitude with the aerodynamic forces, but the net influence of the inertial forces on the position of the butterfly is not significant due to the offsetting of the body and wing inertia. The net aerodynamic and gravitational torques raise the thorax of the butterfly, and the net inertial torques suppress the rise of the thorax.

Immediate allergy caused by natto, a popular Japanese food prepared by fermenting soybeans with Bacillus subtilis var. natto, has been reported. Polygamma glutamic acid (PGA) in the sticky substance around natto beans has been reported to be a causative allergen of natto allergy. However, some of our patients with natto allergy were negative for PGA in the skin prick test (SPT). The sticky substance of natto beans contains a subtilisin family serine protease, nattokinase, along with PGA. In this study, we aimed to examine the antigenicity of nattokinase in natto allergy.Eight patients, who developed symptoms after ingesting natto and positively reacted to natto (seven to the sticky substance in natto and one to the whole natto product) in their SPT, were enrolled in this study. To analyze IgE reactivity, we performed immunoblotting, ELISA, and SPT for natto (bean and sticky substance), and/or PGA, and/or nattokinase and/or cultured B. subtilis var. natto extract.In the SPT, four cases each were PGA-positive and PGA-negative. Immunoblotting of the sera from PGA-negative patients showed a protein band at 30 kDa, which was identified as nattokinase. Three PGA-negative cases, but not three PGA-positive cases, showed a positive reaction to nattokinase in the SPT and had a history of atopic dermatitis. The ELISA for nattokinase revealed a positive reaction of PGA-negative cases and negative reaction of PGA-positive cases in the SPT.We identified a subtilisin family serine protease, nattokinase, as a novel allergen in natto allergy patients unsensitized to PGA.

The structural dynamics of an iodide layer adsorbed on Au(111) were investigated using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and time-resolved X-ray diffraction. At the adsorption equilibrium of iodide at a constant electrode potential, the STM images captured at regular intervals show the migration of atomic vacancy sites in the ordered adsorbed iodide layer. The results indicate that reversible adsorption/desorption and site conversion continuously occur at the equilibrium state. Although the transitions occur at various time scales according to the STM images, the time decay of the autocorrelation function at the specular position is estimated to be 127 s according to the XPCS measurement. The dynamics observed using XPCS suggest that the vertical relaxation of the surface layers is associated with the adsorption of iodide.
