Collisionless magnetohydrodynamic shocks are ubiquitous in solar wind and in other space plasmas. They serve as natural sites where charged particles can be accelerated to supra-thermal energies via various Fermi acceleration mechanisms. Upstream and downstream fluctuations play a key role in these processes because they can act as scatter centers. Furthermore, the downstream turbulent plasma of strong shocks driven by coronal mass ejections can enhance the coupling of this plasma with the Earth’s magnetosphere. Understanding of how the fluctuations are transmitted across the shocks can provide an invaluable insight into many shock related studies.In this paper, we investigate the interaction of fast forward (FF) shocks with magnetic island/flux rope mode fluctuations. We employ a recently developed framework of the Zank et al. (2021) transmission model. We analyze 378 FF shocks observed by the Wind spacecraft with varying upstream conditions and Mach numbers. We estimate upstream and downstream power spectra within one-hour intervals adjacent to the shock front and we calculate theoretically predicted downstream power spectrum. We analyze closely the difference between the observed and theoretically predicted spectra. On average, the model predicts the spectra with very good accuracy. We argue that large statistical spread of this difference is given mainly by the statistical uncertainties in the shock compression ratio, upstream power spectrum and by the turbulent evolution of fluctuations in the downstream region. Finally, our findings also suggest that Zank et al. (2021) model may estimate the downstream levels of fluctuations accurately even for a wider range of shocks than it was originally meant for.

The transport of energetic particles in response to solar wind turbulence is important for space weather. To understand charged particle transport, it is usually assumed that the phase of the turbulence is randomly distributed (the random phase approximation) in quasi-linear theory and simulations. In this paper, we calculate the coherence index, $C_\phi$, of solar wind turbulence observed by the Helios 2 and Parker Solar Probe spacecraft using the surrogate data technique to check if the assumption is valid. Here, values of $C_\phi=0$ and $1$ indicate that the phase coherence is random and correlated, respectively. We estimate that the coherence index at the resonant scale of energetic ions ($10$ MeV protons) is $0.1$ at $0.87$ and $0.65$ au, $0.18$ at $0.29$ au, and $0.3$ ($0.35$) at $0.09$ au for super (sub)-Alfv\'enic intervals, respectively. Since the random phase approximation corresponds to $C_\phi=0$, this may indicate that the random phase approximation is not valid for the transport of energetic particles in the inner heliosphere, especially very close to the Sun ($\sim0.09$ au)., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

Parker Solar Probe provides a unique opportunity to study anisotropic turbulence in the inner heliosphere. We summarize our recent investigations of solar wind turbulence observed by Parker Solar Probe during its first seven orbits ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 AU. First, we analyzed turbulence anisotropy based on the 2D + slab model and determined the power ratio between the 2D and slab components. We find that the fraction of the 2D component increases with radial distance. Second, we developed a method to identify small-scale magnetic flux ropes and Alfvenic structures based on the reduced magnetic helicity. Alfvenic structures are prevalent in both slow and fast solar wind in PSP's measurements, while the small flux ropes are quasi-2D structures and are relatively abundant near the heliospheric current sheet and slow solar wind. Finally, we analyzed intervals with solar wind velocity strictly parallel to the mean magnetic field. We find a Kolmogorov-like power spectrum with a power-law index of -5/3. Wave activities in both MHD and kinetic scales are also analyzed in these field-aligned intervals. Fast magnetosonic waves and ion-scale waves are identified.

Although collisional electrostatic shock waves have been investigated extensively via theory, simulations, and experiments, there are comparatively few studies about collisional magnetized shock waves. We investigate collisional magnetized shocks by performing one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulations that incorporate ion-ion, electron-electron, and ion-electron Coulomb collisions, for perpendicular and quasiparallel shock waves. The effect of Coulomb collisions is to drive a shock wave into a more laminar state. For a perpendicular shock, the magnetic overshoot becomes small because the electron pressure perpendicular to the magnetic field is isotropized and decreases due to electron-electron collisions. For the quasiparallel case, we find that ion-electron collisions severely suppress the standing whistler wave, which is present in the form of large amplitude waves in a collisionless shock wave.

Switchbacks are sudden, large radial deflections of the solar wind magnetic field, widely revealed in interplanetary space by the Parker Solar Probe. The switchbacks' formation mechanism and sources are still unresolved, although candidate mechanisms include Alfvenic turbulence, shear-driven Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, interchange reconnection, and geometrical effects related to the Parker spiral. This Letter presents observations from the Metis coronagraph on board a Solar Orbiter of a single large propagating S-shaped vortex, interpreted as the first evidence of a switchback in the solar corona. It originated above an active region with the related loop system bounded by open-field regions to the east and west. Observations, modeling, and theory provide strong arguments in favor of the interchange reconnection origin of switchbacks. Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed predominately Alfvénic fluctuations in the solar wind near the Sun where the magnetic field tends to be radially aligned. In this paper, two magnetic-field-aligned solar wind flow intervals during PSP’s first two orbits are analyzed. Observations of these intervals indicate strong signatures of parallel/antiparallel-propagating waves. We utilize multiple analysis techniques to extract the properties of the observed waves in both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic scales. At the MHD scale, outward-propagating Alfvén waves dominate both intervals, and outward-propagating fast magnetosonic waves present the second-largest contribution in the spectral energy density. At kinetic scales, we identify the circularly polarized plasma waves propagating near the proton gyrofrequency in both intervals. However, the sense of magnetic polarization in the spacecraft frame is observed to be opposite in the two intervals, although they both possess a sunward background magnetic field. The ion-scale plasma wave observed in the first interval can be either an inward-propagating ion cyclotron wave (ICW) or an outward-propagating fast-mode/whistler wave in the plasma frame, while in the second interval it can be explained as an outward ICW or inward fast-mode/whistler wave. The identification of the exact kinetic wave mode is more difficult to confirm owing to the limited plasma data resolution. The presence of ion-scale waves near the Sun suggests that ion cyclotron resonance may be one of the ubiquitous kinetic physical processes associated with small-scale magnetic fluctuations and kinetic instabilities in the inner heliosphere.

The origin, structure, and propagation characteristics of a switchback are compelling questions posed by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations of velocity spikes and magnetic field reversals. By assuming interchange reconnection between coronal loop and open magnetic field, we show that this results in the generation of upward (into the heliosphere) and downward complex structures propagating at the fast magnetosonic speed (i.e., the Alfvén speed in the low plasma beta corona) that can have an arbitrary radial magnetic field deflection, including “S-shaped.” We derive the evolution equation for the switchback radial magnetic field as it propagates through the inhomogeneous supersonic solar corona. An analytic solution for arbitrary initial conditions is used to investigate the properties of a switchback propagating from launch ∼6 to ∼35 R ⊙ where PSP observed switchbacks during its first encounter. We provide a detailed comparison to an example event, showing that the magnetic field and plasma solutions are in accord with PSP observations. For a simple single switchback, the model predicts either a single or a double-humped structure; the former corresponding to PSP observing either the main body or the flanks of the switchback. The clustering of switchbacks and their sometimes complicated structure may be due to the formation of multiple closely spaced switchbacks created by interchange reconnection with numerous open and loop magnetic field lines over a short period. We show that their evolution yields a complex, aggregated group of switchbacks that includes “sheaths” with large-amplitude radial magnetic field and velocity fluctuations.

We investigate the interaction of a shock wave with multiple current sheets using a 2D hybrid simulation. We set the separation between current sheets at 25c/Wi and the thickness longer than the ion inertial length. While the current sheets are stable upstream, they become unstable to the tearing instability since the thickness becomes shorter than the ion inertial length after they interact with the shock wave. Magnetic islands produced by the instability evolve into larger islands through coalescence and the electromagnetic fields become turbulent far downstream. We also observe that the number of energetic particles increases with distance away from the shock wave and that the increase corresponds to the evolution of the current sheets.

A shock–shock interaction is investigated by using a one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulation. The simulation reproduces the collision of two symmetrical high Mach number quasi-perpendicular shocks. The basic structure of the shocks and ion dynamics is similar to that obtained by previous hybrid simulations. The new aspects obtained here are as follows. Electrons are already strongly accelerated before the two shocks collide through multiple reflection. The reflected electrons self-generate waves upstream between the two shocks before they collide. The waves far upstream are generated through the right-hand resonant instability with the anomalous Doppler effect. The waves generated near the shock are due to firehose instability and have much larger amplitudes than those due to the resonant instability. The high-energy electrons are efficiently scattered by the waves so that some of them gain large pitch angles. Those electrons can be easily reflected at the shock of the other side. The accelerated electrons form a power-law energy spectrum. Due to the accelerated electrons, the pressure of upstream electrons increases with time. This appears to cause the deceleration of the approaching shock speed. The accelerated electrons having sufficiently large Larmor radii are further accelerated through the similar mechanism working for ions when the two shocks are colliding.

We have performed one-dimensional full particle-in-cell simulations of two colliding shocks. Results of three simulation runs are examined in detail. In Run1 (Alfven Mach number MA~7.5, ion and electron beta βi,e=1, shock normal angle θBn=90), substantial acceleration of ions and modification of shock structure are observed when the two shocks collide. However, the electron acceleration is not evident. In Run2 (MA~7.5, βi,e=0.05, θBn=90), modification of the shock structure appears to be more drastic. In Run3 (MA~6.5, βi,e=0.05, θBn=60), electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies as they are repeatedly reflected by the two shocks.
