Biological control (BC) can occur naturally (without human intervention), or by being applied intentionally when it is the result of research and the scientific selection of antagonists. It consists of the reduction in the population density of one species through the action of another. Although the adoption of applied BC in Argentina started at the beginning of the 20th century, it is still a developing discipline. In this context, we designed an online questionnaire consisting of 15 questions to assess the current status of pest BC and the social, economic and demographic aspects of the discipline in the country. We found that 122 people are currently working on BC, of which 62% are women. Although the survey revealed people working on BC in 17 jurisdictions of the country, most of the work is carried out in Buenos Aires, and 82% work in the public sector. Biological control of arthropod pests accounts for 74% of BC projects, which are mainly conducted through classical BC. Despite the fact there is an increase in the number of people working in BC, we offer a series of recommendations aimed at further favoring the growth of the discipline in the country.

Hydrocotyle ranunculoides (Araliaceae) is an aquatic plant native to the Americas and invasive in Europe. This work reports laboratory and garden studies on the host range of its main natural enemy, the weevil Listronotus elongatus (Hustache) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The genus Hydrocotyle is in a disputed phylogenetic situation such that both Apiaceae and Araliaceae must be included in the test list, but lacking a clear criterion of phylogenetic proximity. For this reason three testing instances were applied: no-choice on excised leaves, no choice on functional plants, and a multiple choice garden experiment. A large initial test-plant list was reduced to a smaller list adjusted by a feeding intensity criterion, survival curves and oviposition levels. Feeding was observed on the excised leaves of 21 out of 36 test plants, but as tests progressed to whole plants L. elongatus showed it could only develop and thrive on its natural host, and possibly survive as adults on Hydrocotyle modesta. Results confirm that typical laboratory starvation tests can provide a dependable ranking of physiological acceptability of different plant species but severely overestimate the actual host range of a specialized herbivore. They also indicate that the phylogenetic criterion for test plant list construction must be approached cautiously if the phylogeny is uncertain or disputed.

Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) is an important weed in many waterways worldwide. The South American weevil Neohydronomus affinis Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and the planthopper Lepidelphax pistiae Remes Lenicov (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are specific herbivores of P. stratiotes. Both species, plus the oligophagous moth Samea multiplicalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), were released in a P. stratiotes-infested lake in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where previous sampling indicated that specific herbivores were absent. The weevil and the planthopper established and covered the whole lake in under two months. The moth may have also established but its numbers were very low and erratic. Plant cover, biomass per square metre, and individual plant size decreased markedly within a year after the release of the insects. Concomitantly, other floating macrophytes appeared in the lake. Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) is an important weed in many waterways around the world. The South American weevil Neohydronomus affinis Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a successful biocontrol agent for this weed but additional agents are needed for some areas. The planthopper Lepidelphax pistiae Remes Lenicov (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is a specific herbivore of P. stratiotes and is highly damaging in laboratory conditions. A field experiment was designed to evaluate the damage potential of L. pistiae compared to N. affinis and to assess the potential for competition between the two herbivores. Both herbivore species were reared inside floating cages on a P. stratiotes-infested lake. Plant growth indices assessed were clonation levels, biomass and plant diameter. The growth indices of plants exposed to the herbivores, individually and combined, were comparable, and significantly lower than in the control treatments. Population levels of N. affinis inside the cages were not significantly different when alone or together with L. pistae. Conversely, the density of L. pistiae was significantly lower in combination with the weevil. This suggests that L. pistiae is a damaging herbivore that will not reduce the biological control effectiveness of N. affinis.
