The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) is high in communities within the Peruvian Amazon despite repeated mass-drug administration, demanding alternative strategies of control. Smartphone-attached microscopy (SAM) permits visualization of STH from a small portable microscope through a smartphone screen, potentially providing an inexpensive and rapid method of STH visualization in communities where diagnostic laboratories with microscopes are inaccessible. In this study, a total of 45 community health workers who work within the health systems of Loreto, Peru, attended a 1-day training session with lectures and practicums on STH and SAM. Participants received a pre- and post-intervention questionnaire. Post-intervention, participants were significantly more confident using SAM and identifying parasite images, symptoms, transmission, and treatment (P ≤ 0.0045). Post-intervention, participants correctly labeled a median of five of seven SAM apparatus components and five of eight steps of Kato–Katz technique, were less likely to choose taking medicine to prevent parasite infection (P = 0.0075), and were more likely to select Kato–Katz technique as a type of diagnostic test (P < 0.0001). Most participants felt ready to use SAM in their communities and stated that it could help rural communities far from health centers or laboratories (24%); provide faster identification, results, diagnosis (19%); permit at-home or on-the-spot visualization (14%); and save money (14%). Results show that community health workers show a high level of willingness and competency to learn about both STH and SAM and may be a yet-unexplored practical method of augmenting STH visualization, bringing healthcare to communities in Loreto with poor access to diagnostic laboratories and clinics.

Different interventions have shown effectiveness in modifying cognitive performance on cognitive control demanding tasks in children from poor homes. However, little is known about the influence of cognitive interventions on children’s brain functioning and how individual variability modulates the impact of those interventions. In the present study, we examined the impact of two individualized cognitive training interventions on cognitive performance and neural activity in preschoolers from poor homes. Participants were classified based on their basal performance (i.e., high and low performers) in an inhibitory control task and then separated into intervention and control groups within each performance level. The control groups completed an intervention with three activities without cognitive control demands. The intervention groups performed three training activities with increased cognitive demands adjusted according to their cognitive baseline performance. Children were trained weekly for 12 weeks and tested before and after the intervention, at kindergarten, using EEG recordings during a Go/NoGo task performance. Results revealed significant training effects on midfrontal neural activity associated with conflict processing in both intervention groups. Low performers exhibited changes on preresponse conflict processing (i.e., N2). However, the high-performing group had larger training effects on both conflict-related activity (i.e., N2, ERN, and theta power) and fluid intelligence. These results suggest that the consideration of individual differences in the design of interventions could contribute to the adaptation of training demands and that the use of mobile EEG technology could be useful to assess eventual neural markers in more ecological contexts.

Azotobacter is a type of bacterium nonpathogenic, Gram-negative with ability to synthesize simultaneously under aerobic conditions two biodegradable polymers extra and intracellular such as alginate and polyhydroxyalkanoates, respectively, whose physical, mechanical, and biodegradable properties have awoken the interest in the industry. Thus, this review compiles information on synthesis chemistry of these polymers and the genetic modification of this bacterium in order to produce a particular polymer and improve its yields. Additionally, we show that alginates obtained present a higher molecular weight, degree of acetylation and M/G ratio compared with other organic sources like seaweed; while polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers have better physical and mechanical characteristics (melting temperature, Young's modulus, elongation and glass transition temperature) compared with other synthetic polymers. These characteristics present in both polymers have allowed the development of several applications in the food, pharmaceutical, medical and agronomic industries. Finally, it is necessary to study new strategies to control the variability of the degree of acetylation and molecular weight for alginate polymers and improve the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates in order to propose new future applications in the industry.

Preschool children show neural responses and make behavioral adjustments immediately following an error. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding how neural responses to error predict subsequent behavioral adjustments during childhood. The aim of our study was to explore the neural dynamics of error processing and associated behavioral adjustments in preschool children from unsatisfied basic needs (UBN) homes. Using EEG recordings during a go/no-go task, we examined within-subject associations between the error-related negativity (ERN), frontal theta power, post-error slowing, and post-error accuracy. Post-error accuracy increased linearly with post-error slowing, and there was no association between the neural activity of error processing and post-error accuracy. However, during successful error recovery, the frontal theta power, but not the ERN amplitude, was associated positively with post-error slowing. These findings indicated that preschool children from UBN homes adjusted their behavior following an error in an adaptive form and that the error-related theta activity may be associated with the adaptive forms of post-error behavior. Furthermore, our data support the adaptive theory of post-error slowing and point to some degree of separation between the neural mechanisms represented by the ERN and theta.

Rapid rise of population migration is a defining feature of the 21st century due to the impact of climate change, political instability, and socioeconomic downturn. Over the last decade, an increasing number of migrant peoples travel across the Americas to reach the United States seeking asylum or cross the border undocumented in search of economic opportunities. In this journey, migrant people experience violations of their human rights, hunger, illness, violence and have limited access to medical care. In the ‘Divine Comedy’, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri depicts his allegorical pilgrimage across Hell and Purgatory to reach Paradise. More than 700 years after its publication, Dante's poem speaks to the present time and the perilious journey of migrant peoples to reach safehavens. By exploring the depths and heights of the human condition, Dante's struggles resonate with the multiple barriers and the unfathomable experiences faced by migrant peoples in transit across South, Central, and North America to reach the United States. Ensuring the safety of migrant peoples across the Americas and elsewhere, and attending to their health needs during their migratory paths represent modern priorities to reduce social injustices and achieving health equity. With the recent growth of all Blockchain-related technologies and the huge investments that companies such as Facebook and Microsoft are making to become part of the metaverse, what seemed like science fiction a few years ago is starting to materialize. The aim of this paper is to clarify the concept of the metaverse, explore the technologies required for its implementation and understand why Blockchain is a fundamental part of creating the metaverse. First, we will analyze the terminology related to virtual worlds and extended reality technologies to clarify the blurred line between the material and the virtual. Then, we will present the most promising metaverse projects and their distinctive features. Finally, we will demonstrate the code necessary to deploy a smart contract that facilitates the sale of an ERC20 token.

Contemporary evidence shows that different intervention approaches can be effective in improving executive cognitive performance in preschoolers from poor homes. However, several aspects about the role of individual and contextual differences in intervention effects remain to be elucidated. The present study aimed to explore the impact of a computerized executive cognitive intervention with lab-based tasks in preschoolers from Unsatisfied Basic Needs (UBN) homes. In the context of a randomized controlled design, different activities were administered to children according to their baseline performance in a variety of cognitive tasks tapping inhibitory control, working memory, and planning demands (i.e., high- and low-performance intervention and control groups). Results suggested that the impact of the intervention was shown preferentially by high-performers in Tower of London and K-Bit tasks, who increased their performances in the posttest assessment. This finding supports the importance of considering individual and contextual differences in the design of interventions aimed at changing the cognitive performance of children from poor homes.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) set a public health risk through disruption of normal physiological processes. The toxicoepigeneticmechanisms of developmental exposure to common EDCs, such as bisphenol A (BPA), are poorly known. The present study aimed to evaluate associations between perinatal maternal urinary concentrations of BPA, bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) and LINE-1 (long interspersed nuclear elements) and Alu (short interspersed nuclear elements, SINEs) DNA methylation levels in newborns, as surrogate markers of global DNA methylation. Data come from 318 mother-child pairs of the `Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma´ (NELA) birth cohort. Urinary bisphenol concentrationwas measured by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction and ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection. DNA methylation was quantitatively assessed by bisulphite pyrosequencing on 3 LINEs and 5 SINEs. Unadjusted linear regression analyses showed that higher concentration ofmaternal urinary BPA in 24th week's pregnancy was associated with an increase in LINE-1 methylation in all newborns (p = 0.01) and, particularly, in male newborns (p = 0.03). These associations remained in full adjusted models [beta = 0.09 (95 % CI = 0.03; 0.14) for all newborns; and beta= 0.10 (95 % CI = 0.03; 0.17) for males], including a non-linear association for female newborns as well (p-trend=0.003). No associations were found between maternal concentrations of bisphenol and Alu sequences. Our results suggest that exposure to environmental levels of BPA may be associated with a modest increase in LINE-1 methylation -as a relevant marker of epigenomic stability- during human fetal development. However, any effects on global DNA methylation are likely to be small, and of uncertain biological significance., Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Fondos FEDER MS14/00046 CP14/00046 PIE15/00051 PI16/00422 FI17/00086 PI19/00863, Fundacion Seneca, Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnologia Region de Murcia 20877/PI/18, Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain (MICINN), Spanish Government FPU18/01990, ISCIII, Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, and Fondos FEDER MS14/00046 CPII19/00019

This work has as study objects the cultural practices of mobilization of history of mathematics accomplished by authors of mathematics text books that wrote books for the high school. These practices are conceived here as symbolic forms and, like this, the study of these mobilization forms of the history was accomplished with base in an analysis of hermeneutic stamp. For this analysis, we accomplished the crossing among three types of documental sources: collections of text books present in PNLEM 2005; interviews accomplished with the authors of these collections and your analysis present in the PNLEM catalog about these collections. Through this crossing, we noticed that the cultural practices of mobilization of the history of mathematics happen more frequently at the present time, and one of the decisive factors for this was the interference of the Federal Government in relation to the purchases of text books for the high school. The didactic collections analyzed did not become necessarily homogeneous because of the criteria of the official evaluation, but the coming of the mobilization of the history constitutes a positive factor for the students' continuous formation and teachers of the high school Mestrado Educação Matemática Mestre em Educação

Background: Palliative care aims to improve life quality of patients and their families, preventing and relieving people's suffering in coping life-threatening diseases. Many challenges are linked to palliative care, such as the lack of specific disciplines in doctors training; the scarcity of services and specialized programs in palliative care in public and private health systems and the lack of training for resident doctors. Objective: To identify knowledge of resident doctors regarding palliative care. Method: A systematic review according to PRISMA (2009), with searches carried out in Cochrane Library, MEDLINE / PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science databases and gray literature of Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD), with the acceptance of articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish, without delimitation of publication date, geographic location and type of study. Only studies with resident doctors were included. Results: During the search, 931 articles were found. Of these, 363 were discarded because they were duplicated and 568 were discarded after reading titles and abstracts, leaving 24 articles for complete reading, which after reading and consensus of the three researchers, only 07 of these articles were included in the comparative synthesis. Three intervention studies, two cross-sectional and two qualitative studies were found. In the observed data, all the analyzed studies had a sample of less than 100 subjects, with a total of 442 subjects, of which 137 (30.99%) were women and 111 (25.12%) men, with average age ranging from 26.6 to 32.1. Conclusions: The studies analyzed in this review indicate that the knowledge of resident doctors was limited and insufficient related to palliative care, what indicates the need of greater investments in training, through teaching-learning methods based on rotation, simulation and others, thus improving not only knowledge, but also the practice in palliative care. The cemeteries have been present in the culture for many centuries. However, knowledge of the potential that is reported to contaminate the environment is more recent. Substances generated in the decomposition of human bodies may be potentially toxic, depending on their composition, however, the scientific study of the variables present in the cemetery is difficult because of the symbolic load it presents to society. Through a bibliographical survey, we tried to describe the possible contaminants generated by the putrefaction of bodies in cemeteries and the association that these cause. It was concluded that the ions adsorption capacity by soil is an important characteristic given by the clay fraction and qualification the soil as apt to receive cemetery activities.

- Abstract

Multiple disorders once jointly conceived as "nervous diseases" became segregated by the distinct institutional traditions forged in neurology and psychiatry. As a result, each field specialized in the study and treatment of a subset of such conditions. Here we propose new avenues for interdisciplinary interaction through a triangulation of both fields with social neuroscience. To this end, we review evidence from five relevant domains (facial emotion recognition, empathy, theory of mind, moral cognition, and social context assessment), highlighting their common disturbances across neurological and psychiatric conditions and discussing their multiple pathophysiological mechanisms. Our proposal is anchored in multidimensional evidence, including behavioral, neurocognitive, and genetic findings. From a clinical perspective, this work paves the way for dimensional and transdiagnostic approaches, new pharmacological treatments, and educational innovations rooted in a combined neuropsychiatric training. Research-wise, it fosters new models of the social brain and a novel platform to explore the interplay of cognitive and social functions. Finally, we identify new challenges for this synergistic framework.

After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, a new phenomenon, fear of terrorism, was found to affect many Americans. Almost 15 years later, with few exceptions, the US homeland has enjoyed an environment free of major terrorist attacks. However, fear of terrorism remains high among Americans. Using a sample of 524 undergraduate students from a major regional university in the Midwest region of the United States, researchers distributed a survey to investigate levels of fear of terrorism and perceptions about the likelihood of a terrorist attack happening on American soil. The findings of this study indicated that respondents were moderately fearful of terrorism and moderately certain than an attack would happen in the near future. Many of the measures previously identified in the research continue to influence fears and concerns about the risk and fear of an attack.

Exilio. Roma. Abstract: The present article aims to demonstrate and discuss how a writer / thinker makes of his own experience, as an exiled subject, a discursive practice with certain purposes, whether political, philosophical or moral. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional value of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) cv. Barjumbo and common ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) intercropped or not with oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) cv. IAPAR 61 under two post-grazing residue. The study was conducted at the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, Câmpus Dois Vizinhos, in the period April-September, 2012. The experimental design was a bifactorial 4x2, totaling eight treatments with three replicates, common and Barjumbo ryegrass single or intercropped with oat in two post-grazing residue: High: 50% of the input height; Low: 30% of the input height being evaluated. The variables evaluated were crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), total digestible nutrients (TDN) and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). The single Barjumbo had higher CP. NDF and ADF were lower for single cultivar or intercropped Barjumbo in comparison to the common cultivar and, consequently, the IVDMD and TDN were higher. Within the trial period, the grazing slightly increased the CP content, TDN and IVDMD until about 100 days after emergence. The NDF and ADF values have showed a linear increase from the beginning to the end of the trial period.

- Abstract

The influence of adverse environmental conditions on the organization and reorganization of the brain structure and function involves distinct neural systems at different levels of organization. Electroencephalographic (EEG) measures provide precise evidence on the temporal sequence in which relevant cognitive processes occur. Here, we offer a systematic review of EEG studies on the influence of childhood poverty on cognitive development. The paradigms used focused primarily on correlates of inhibitory control, selective attention, and unrelated task-event activity. Eighteen studies reported differences related to socioeconomic disparities, including (a) discrepancies in neural markers of interference control and early auditory sensory processing and (b) delays in the maturation of brain oscillations in frontal regions. Overall, EEG techniques appear to have predictive power over cognitive and academic performance of children. Therefore, EEG markers may be useful to evaluate the efficacy of interventions aimed to enhance cognitive development in children facing unfavorable social conditions.

Past research has demonstrated the utility of on-line support groups for individuals to form relationships and make connections. Additionally, some on-line communities have expanded to provide various types of support, particularly for deviant behavior. These virtual communities may be particularly indispensable to individuals who, out of fear of condemnation, are reluctant to seek traditional forms of social support. For purposes of this study, we examined how members of a substance abuse recovery on-line support group expressed feelings pertaining to their own substance abuse, as well as their processes of attempted or successful recovery. Using an inductive approach for our preliminary analysis, we first assessed which theories were most prevalent throughout the writers’ journals. We then used these theories, both Hirschi’s theory of social control and Braithwaite’s theory of reintegrative shaming, as frameworks to explore the differences between those who were in recovery and those who were still using.

General Medicine - Abstract
