In this article, we will present the HEC BB bag, a simple but elegant model originally invented to help students imagine how air molecules move around in vacuum. The HEC BB bag is made by packing 20 to 30 BBs in a resealable plastic bag of several tens of square centimeters (see Fig. 1). When inflated fully via a straw, the volume of the bag is about 5 L in volume (see below for specifications).

Diese kumulative Dissertation befasst sich mit den Mechanismen der regulatorischen Konfliktentwicklung zwischen öffentlichen und privaten Organisationen in Regimekomplexen. Obwohl private Regulierungsorganisationen wie z.B. der Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) oder die Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle bei der Bereitstellung internationaler Regeln spielen, ist bisher wenig darüber bekannt, wann und wie es zu öffentlich-privaten Konflikten kommt. Diese Dissertation schließt diese Forschungslücke, indem sie unterschiedliche Kausalmechanismen der Konfliktentwicklung zwischen beiden Governance-Formen identifiziert und die Folgen öffentlich-privater Konflikte für internationale Kooperation untersucht. Es zeigt sich, dass private Organisationen häufig dazu neigen, sich von der institutionellen Umwelt zu isolieren. Daraus resultierend fokussieren sich private Organisationen ausschließlich auf ihr eigenes Ziel und blenden Sekundäreffekte auf andere Politikbereiche aus, wodurch es zu Konflikten und Konkurrenzsituationen mit öffentlichen Organisationen kommen kann. Gleichzeitig haben öffentliche Organisationen sowie Staaten oftmals die Möglichkeit, direkt oder indirekt auf private Organisationen und deren Politikinhalte einzuwirken, sodass langfristig institutionelle Anpassungen vorgenommen werden. Da private Organisationen damit zunehmend Einfluss auf die Effektivität internationaler Kooperation nehmen, plädiert die Dissertation dafür, sie als wichtige Bestandteile von Regimekomplexen zu erfassen.

Gaseous acetic acid is formed under conditions of storage of historic paper objects. Its presence not only promotes hydrolytic cleavage of cellulose, but also causes acetylation of the cellulosic material to very small degree. The acetylation reaction proceeds under ambient conditions and without catalyst. Different analytical methods were used to prove the presence of organic acetates on cellulosic paper matrices. DESI-MS in combination with 2H-isotopic labeling showed the presence of sugar fragments with different acetylation patterns. A method based on Zemplen saponification was applied and worked also in the presence of a large excess of acetic acid and/or inorganic acetates. The acetylation effect was quantified for model papers and original, naturally aged paper samples. While cellulose acetylation was clearly proven to be another general pathway of paper aging, further studies of this acetylation phenomenon are needed with regard to conservational aspects and suitable paper storage conditions.

Zusammenfassung Einleitung Stationäre Psychotherapien können u. a. aufgrund der kurzen, aber intensiven Behandlung Nebenwirkungen auslösen. In der vorliegenden Pilotstudie wurden daher bestimmte Nebenwirkungen eines multidisziplinären, stationären CBASP-Programms (Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy) für Patienten mit therapieresistenter chronischer Depression sowie deren Zusammenhang mit dem Therapieerfolg (Response-, Remissions- und Rückfallraten) untersucht. Material & Methoden 50 Patienten mit therapieresistenter chronischer Depression nahmen an einem strukturierten 12-wöchigen, stationären CBASP-Programm teil. Nebenwirkungen wurden erfasst durch 1) eine Verschlechterung der depressiven Symptomatik im Fremdbericht bei Entlassung (Wert auf der Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, HDRS24) und 2) einem Selbstbeurteilungsfragebogen zur Erfassung von Nebenwirkungen in der stationären Psychotherapie (NESTAP), welcher von Patienten 6–12 Monate nach Entlassung ausgefüllt wurde. Ergebnisse Nach der 12-wöchigen Behandlung konnten 84% der Patienten als Responder klassifiziert werden, von denen 44% das Remissionskriterium erfüllten. 16% waren Non-Responder, wobei kein Patient gemäß HDRS eine fremdbeurteilte Verschlechterung der depressiven Symptomatik zeigte. Sechs Monate nach Entlassung erlitten 40% der Responder einen Rückfall. Im NESTAP gaben 66% der Patienten an, dass sich während der Behandlung ihre Symptomatik vorübergehend verschlechtert habe. Bei diesen Patienten zeigte sich eine geringere Remissionsrate. Über 50% berichteten von interpersonellen Konflikten mit Teammitgliedern oder anderen Patienten, wobei kein Zusammenhang mit dem Therapieerfolg nachweisbar war. Schließlich berichteten über 50% der Patienten, nach Entlassung Veränderungen in sozialen Beziehungen erlebt zu haben. Diese Patienten hatten seltener einen Rückfall. Insgesamt gaben 94% aller Patienten an, mindestens eine der in dieser Studie erhobenen Nebenwirkungen erlebt zu haben. Schlussfolgerung Diese Pilotstudie gibt trotz einiger Limitationen erste Hinweise, dass das stationäre CBASP-Programm Nebenwirkungen verursacht, wobei nur eine subjektiv wahrgenommene vorübergehende Verschlechterung den individuellen Therapieerfolg kurzfristig negativ zu beeinflussen scheint. Die Ergebnisse sprechen dafür, Nebenwirkungen im Kontext des kurz- und langfristigen Therapieerfolges zu untersuchen, um herauszufinden, wie relevant Nebenwirkungen sind.

To determine the suitability of T2-weighted PROPELLER MRI for the assessment of pulmonary emphysema.60 participants in a lung cancer screening program (30 subjects with pulmonary emphysema, and 30 control subjects without emphysema) were included for this retrospective study. All subjects were examined with low-dose CT (LDCT) and MRI within the screening program. The use of a T2-weighted PROPELLER sequence for the assessment of emphysema was analyzed and correlated with the results of LDCT. The presence and the extent of pulmonary emphysema were first assessed qualitatively using a three-point score, and then quantitatively with a semi-automated software program to obtain emphysema indices.All 30 cases with pulmonary emphysema were accurately detected by MRI. There were 3 cases with emphysema according to MRI without emphysematous changes on LDCT (false-positive results). The qualitative scores as well as the emphysema indices were significantly higher in the emphysema group compared to the control group for MRI and LDCT (p 0.001). Danach wurden Emphysem-Indices mit Hilfe einer halbautomatischen Software quantitativ bestimmt.Das Vorliegen eines Lungenemphysems wurde in allen 30 Fällen korrekt von der MRT erkannt. Es gab 3 Fälle mit einem Emphysem laut MRT, die keine emphysematösen Veränderungen in der NDCT aufwiesen (falsch-positive Ergebnisse). Die Emphysem-Scores und die Emphysem-Indices waren sowohl in der NDCT als auch in der MRT signifikant höher in der Emphysemgruppe als in der Kontrollgruppe (p 0,001). The normal mapping technique is widely used in computer graphics to visualize three-dimensional (3D) objects displayed on a flat screen. Taking advantage of optical properties of metasurfaces, which provide a highly efficient approach for manipulation of incident light wavefront, we have designed a metasurface to implement diffuse reflection and used the concept of normal mapping to control its scattering properties. As a proof of principle, we have fabricated and characterized a flat diffuse metasurface imitating lighting and shading effects of a 3D cube. The 3D image is displayed directly on the illuminated metasurface and it is brighter than a standard white paper by up to 2.4 times. The designed structure performs equally well under coherent and incoherent illumination. The normal mapping approach based on metasurfaces can complement traditional optical engineering methods of surface profiling and gradient refractive index engineering in the design of 3D security features, high-performance planar optical diffusers, novel optical elements, and displays.

Abstract. The Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP) has been forwarded as one of the most promising alternatives to the Implicit Association Test and the evaluative-priming task for measuring attitudes such as prejudice indirectly. We investigated whether the AMP is indeed able to detect an evaluative out-group bias. In contrast to recent conclusions about the robustness of AMP effects, six out of seven pilot studies indicated that participants did not show any prejudice effects in the AMP. Yet, these pilot studies were not fully conclusive with regard to our research question because they investigated different domains of prejudice, used small sample sizes, and employed a modified AMP version. In a preregistered, high-powered AMP study, we therefore examined whether the standard AMP does reveal prejudice against Turks, the biggest minority in Germany, and found a significant, albeit very small prejudice effect. We discuss possible reasons for the AMP’s weak sensitivity to evaluations in socially sensitive domains.

Angesichts der grosen Krankheitslast psychischer Storungen liegt in der flachendeckenden, wohnortnahen und bedarfsgerechten Versorgung eine zentrale Aufgabe des Gesundheitssystems. Die Dichte ambulant tatiger Arzte und Psychotherapeuten variiert zwischen den Regionen Deutschlands allerdings erheblich. Inwiefern dies durch entsprechende Morbiditatsunterschiede gerechtfertigt ist, wird ublicherweise anhand von GKV-Routinedaten bewertet. Da administrative Statistiken jedoch auch Abbild lokaler Diagnosegewohnheiten sowie der Angebotsstrukturen selbst sind, sollten entsprechende Analysen durch epidemiologische Daten erweitert werden. Die darin erfassten Pravalenzen psychischer Storungen stellen eine wesentliche Informationsquelle fur eine evidenzbasierte Bedarfsplanung dar. Anhand der Studie zur Gesundheit Erwachsener in Deutschland (DEGS1-MH) und dem ZI-Versorgungsatlas wurde untersucht, inwiefern die Dichte der ambulanten Versorgung mit der von der Inanspruchnahme unabhangigen und standardisiert erhobenen Pravalenz psychischer Storungen zusammenhangt. Neben den nominellen Arztdichten wurden auch Mitversorgungsbeziehungen zwischen Regionen berucksichtigt. Die grosen regionalen Unterschiede in den Arztdichten korrespondieren – auch unter Einbezug von Mitversorgung – nicht mit den regionalen Pravalenzen psychischer Storungen bzw. besonders behandlungsbedurftiger Falle. Die regionale Verteilung von Arztsitzen kann nicht angemessen durch Bedarfsunterschiede erklart werden. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf Potenziale zur Morbiditatsadjustierung der Bedarfsplanung hin, wobei der Begriff des Behandlungsbedarfs von Menschen mit psychischen Storungen weiter reflektiert werden muss.

Der Ruf nach mehr Partizipation erweist sich in der offentlichen Debatte seit einigen Jahren als sehr popular. Was konnte besser zu einer aufgeklarten Wissensgesellschaft passen als die immer grosere Einbindung immer breiterer Gesellschaftsschichten in den politischen Prozess? Es sollte allerdings bereits skeptisch stimmen, dass der Ruf nach mehr politischer Partizipation sowohl in urban-akademischen Milieus als auch bei Rechts- und Linkspopulisten beliebt ist. Die vorliegenden Ausfuhrungen unterziehen die Partizipationsrhetorik der vergangenen Jahre einer kritischen Prufung – und dies unter Rekurs auf einen klassischen Text zur politischen Kulturforschung. Denn es sind durchaus Zweifel angebracht, ob burgerschaftliche Partizipation ein per se erstrebenswertes Gut darstellt.

Psychotherapeuten sind in ihrem Beruf besonderen ­Belastungen ­ausgesetzt. Welche Faktoren sind dabei spezifisch fur die Zeit der Ausbildung? Entsprechende Befunde werden fur die ­unterschiedlichen Ausbildungsteile getrennt diskutiert und mit der Risikoforschung in Zusammenhang gebracht. Daraus leiten wir ab, an welchen ­qualitatssichernden Elementen der Ausbildung unbedingt ­festgehalten werden sollte und wo Forschung bisher fehlt.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund: Der Zugang zum Versorgungssystem hängt für Menschen mit psychischen Störungen maßgeblich vom Wohnort ab, da die Dichte von Haus- und Fachärzten in Deutschland erheblich variiert. Ob die regionalen Unterschiede in den Angebotsstrukturen entsprechende Unterschiede auf der Nachfrageseite reflektieren, ist bisher nicht eindeutig zu beantworten. Ziel: Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die räumlichen Disparitäten in der ambulanten Arztdichte von Hausärzten, Nervenärzten und Psychotherapeuten in Deutschland dargestellt und hinsichtlich ihrer Bedarfsgerechtigkeit diskutiert. Dazu müssen Versorgungsunterschiede mit dem Krankheitsstatus und der Krankheitslast einer Region in Bezug gesetzt werden. Ergebnis: Die Nutzung von Diagnoseraten aus Routinedaten der gesetzlichen Krankenversicherungen zu diesem Zweck zeigt Zusammenhänge zwischen Angebotsstrukturen und Morbidität, die in ihrer Aussagekraft jedoch limitiert sind. Hier bieten Auswertungen epidemiologischer Studien, die die „wahren“ Prävalenzen von psychischen Störungen untersuchen, einen wesentlichen Beitrag für eine evidenzbasierte Bedarfsplanung.

In two experiments, the impact of faking on the affect misattribution procedure (AMP) was examined. Results revealed that faking influences both the overall means and the convergent validity of AMP effects in terms of correlations with self-report measures. Faking effects were very selective in that they affected fake-prime trials only, for which AMP effects were significant, but reversed in direction, while AMP effects for non-fake trials remained intact. Importantly, neither strategic advice nor prior task experience was a necessary prerequisite for successful faking. The discussion focuses on possible processes underlying successful faking in the AMP.

Extreme weather conditions with prolonged dry periods and high temperatures as well as heavy rain events can severely influence grapevine physiology and grape quality. The present study evaluates the effects of severe drought stress on selected primary metabolites, polyphenols and volatile metabolites in grapevine leaves. Among the 11 primary metabolites, 13 polyphenols and 95 volatiles which were analyzed, a significant discrimination between control and stressed plants of 7 primary metabolites, 11 polyphenols and 46 volatile metabolites was observed. As single parameters are usually not specific enough for the discrimination of control and stressed plants, an unsupervised (PCA) and a supervised (PLS-DA) multivariate approach were applied to combine results from different metabolic groups. In a first step a selection of five metabolites, namely citric acid, glyceric acid, ribose, phenylacetaldehyde and 2-methylbutanal were used to establish a calibration model using PLS regression to predict the leaf water potential. The model was strong enough to assign a high number of plants correctly with a correlation of 0.83. The PLS-DA provides an interesting approach to combine data sets and to provide tools for the specific evaluation of physiological plant stresses.

Fur den politischen Beobachter stellt es im Grunde eine Binsenweisheit dar, dass politische und wirtschaftliche Zusammenhange auf das Engste miteinander verflochten und verwoben sind. Ein kursorischer Blick auf wichtige politische Grosereignisse, Krisen und Kontroversen der vergangenen Jahre von der „Eurokrise“ uber die „Energiewende“ bis hin zur „Fluchtlingsherausforderung“ – um nur ein paar assoziationsreiche Schlagworte zu nennen – bestatigt diese Annahme.

A novel approach to measure the degree of acetylation in biopolymers applying a combination of Zemplen-deacetylation by sodium methanolate and GC-MS methodology is introduced. The development focuses on very low limits of detection to cover also samples with extremely low degrees of acetylation which hitherto eluded accurate determination. Free acetic acid or inorganic acetates, often present in biopolymer samples, do not disturb the quantification. Two techniques to measure the Zemplen-released methyl acetate were comparatively assessed, direct injection of the liquid phase and a SPME-based approach, the former being more straightforward, but being inferior to the latter in sensitivity. By applying isotopically labeled methyl acetate released from 4-O-(13C2-acetyl)-vanillin as the internal standard, influences, such as varying moisture contents, are corrected, improving the overall method reliability to a large extent. The combination of Zemplen-release of acetyl groups in biopolymers as methyl acetate, in connection with its accurate quantification by SPME-GC-MS, was found to be the method of choice for routine, yet very accurate analysis of a wide range of acetylation degrees of biopolymers, showing satisfying analytical parameters along with easy handling and widest applicability. Limit of detection for acetylated cellulose samples is 0.09nmol/mg, for hemicellulose samples 0.48nmol/mg.

The objective of this study is to estimate the energetic yields of a combined ethanol and biogas production from three different sorghum varieties, and to compare them to a similar estimate for maize in order to demonstrate the suitability of sorghum as an alternative biomass source. The sorghum varieties “SG1” (Sugargraze I) and “SG2” (Sugargraze II), which produce fermentable sugars, as well as the grain variety “C” (Chopper), which produces starch, were grown on experimental plots in eastern Austria. The harvested biomass was analysed for its contents of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, crude protein, crude fats, starch and sugar. For the calculation of the energy output, ethanol and biogas yields were calculated corresponding to accepted standard methods. The potential of sorghum for energy production has been demonstrated. The highest energy outputs were achieved by the SG1 and the C varieties, delivering approximately 150 GJ ha −1 and 156 GJ ha −1 . Compared to data obtained from different maize varieties in the same year and under similar conditions, this means an equal or even increased energy output per hectare. The SG2 variety only yielded 121 GJ ha −1 worth of ethanol and biogas. Bioethanol and biogas production were unequally distributed between sugar and starch varieties: SG1 provided 70% of its energy output as methane and the rest as bioethanol, whereas the grain variety C yielded 46% methane and 54% bioethanol.

Die Disziplin der Epidemiologie tragt nicht nur zum Erkenntnisgewinn hinsichtlich der Verteilung und Haufigkeit psychischer Storungen, sondern auch zum besseren Verstandnis von deren Ursachen und Folgen bei. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden Schwerpunkte auf die Pravalenz und die Krankheitslast psychischer Storungen gelegt. Epidemiologische Studien zeigen, dass psychische Storungen haufiger sind, als fruher angenommen, und dass sie mit einer besonders grosen gesellschaftlichen Krankheitslast verbunden sind. Monetare und nichtmonetare Krankheitskosten sind hoher als bei vielen korperlichen Volkskrankheiten; dies liegt neben der hohen Pravalenz u. a. an dem haufig chronischen Verlauf, dem meist jungen Ersterkrankungsalter und den speziellen Beeintrachtigungsprofilen. Das Ausmas der Arbeitsunfahigkeit aufgrund psychischer Storungen steigt kontinuierlich an, obwohl uber alle Krankheitsarten hinweg ein allgemeiner Ruckgang des Krankenstands festzustellen ist. Somit drangt sich die Frage auf, ob psychische Storungen in letzter Zeit zugenommen haben. Weiterhin wird das Konzept des Behandlungsbedarfs thematisiert, die Versorgungssituation umrissen und festgestellt, dass trotz des im internationalen Vergleich quantitativ gut ausgebauten Gesundheitssystems im Bereich der Psychotherapie nach wie vor Hinweise auf eine Unterversorgung bestehen.

We replicated and extended a study by Spruyt and Hermans (2008) in which picture primes engendered an evaluative-priming effect on the pronunciation of target words. As preliminary steps, we assessed data reproducibility of the original study, conducted Pilot Study I to identify highly semantically related prime-target pairs, reanalyzed the original data excluding such pairs, conducted Pilot Study II to demonstrate that we can replicate traditional associative priming effects in the pronunciation task, and conducted Pilot Study III to generate relatively unrelated sets of prime pictures and target words. The main study comprised three between-participants conditions: (1) a close replication of the original study, (2) the same condition excluding highly related prime-target pairs, and (3) a condition based on the relatively unrelated sets of prime pictures and target words developed in Pilot Study III. There was little evidence for an evaluative priming effect independent of semantic relatedness.

Pulp mill effluents contain potentially valuable compounds and will gain even greater importance than today in future biorefinery scenarios as possible resources. Analysis of effluents of process streams is not straightforward because of the vast variety of substances embedded in the complex inorganic matrix of high concentration. In the present comparative investigation, different combinations of gas chromatography (GC) and derivatisation techniques were tested and critically evaluated aiming at a comprehensive description of all major compound classes (low-molecular weight and long-chain carboxylic acids, lignin fragments, carbohydrates and aldehydes). As derivatisation techniques, trimethylsilylation, (trimethylsilyl)methylation and methylation were applied. In addition, the effluents were analysed by pyrolysis-GC/mass spectrometry (MS), either directly or with simultaneous methylation. The study provides comprehensive information on the composition of effluents, the suitability of the various combinations of derivatisation and GC/MS techniques. The discrimination effects of the different approaches are compared. The comprehensive analytical approach led to a coherent balance in terms of the contribution of the major portion of organic compounds to the total organic carbon (TOC) content in pulp mill effluents.

In a series of articles, Spruyt and colleagues have developed the Feature-Specific Attention Allocation framework, stating that the semantic analysis of task-irrelevant stimuli is critically dependent upon dimension-specific attention allocation. In an adversarial collaboration, we replicate one experiment supporting this theory (Spruyt, de Houwer, & Hermans, 2009; Exp. 3), in which semantic priming effects in the pronunciation task were found to be restricted to stimulus dimensions that were task-relevant on induction trials. Two pilot studies showed the capability of our laboratory to detect priming effects in the pronunciation task, but also suggested that the original effect may be difficult to replicate. In this study, we tried to replicate the original experiment while ensuring adequate statistical power. Results show little evidence for dimension-specific priming effects. The present results provide further insight into the malleability of early semantic encoding processes, but also show the need for further research on this topic.
