In this chapter, we focus on what we see as an emergent practice of (neo-colonial) visual consumption: filmic representations by tourists and semi-professional travellers of their visits to 'primitive' places, which they subsequently post on social media. As case studies, we have selected two YouTubevideos on Ethiopia's Mursi that are, despite obvious differences, similar enough to allow for a systematic comparison. In choosing the Mursi, often presented as an extreme example of cultural alterity because of their characteristic lip plates, we continue where the provocative documentary Framing the Other (Kok & Timmers, 2011), which had its focus on Dutch tourists visiting the Mursi, left off. The authors' main goal is to understand the contemporary nature of cultural consumption and production and, in their wake, the power differentials underlying this growing virtual domain of representations. Using theory and analytical approaches from both cultural studies and anthropology, we look at historical tropes employed to frame self and other, and consider the possible consequences, ethical and otherwise, of this type of mediatization of tourist encounters.

We investigate the critical properties of the spin 1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8, both below and above the ordering temperature TN using neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation measurements. Our results characterize BaNi2V2O8 as a two dimensional 2D antiferromagnet across the entire temperature range, displaying a series of crossovers from 2D Ising like to 2D XY and then to 2D Heisenberg behavior with increasing temperature. In particular, the extracted critical exponent of the order parameter reveals a narrow temperature regime close to TN , in which the system behaves as a 2D XY antiferromagnet. Above TN , evidence for Berezinsky Kosterlitz Thouless behavior driven by vortex excitations is obtained from the scaling of the correlation length. Our experimental results are in accord with classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations performed for microscopic magnetic model Hamiltonians for BaNi2V2O8

The magnetic ground state in highly ordered double perovskites LaSr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$NiReO$_6$ ($x$ = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0) were studied in view of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules of superexchange interactions. In LaSrNiReO$_6$, Ni and Re sublattices are found to exhibit curious magnetic states, but do not show any long range magnetic ordering. The magnetic transition at $\sim$ 255 K is identified with the Re sublattic magnetic ordering. The sublattice interactions are tuned by modifying the Ni-O-Re bond angles via changing the lattice structure through Ca doping. Upon Ca doping, the Ni and Re sublattices start to display a ferrimagnetically ordered state at low temperature. The neutron powder diffraction reveals a canted alignment between the Ni and the Re sublattices, while the individual sublattice is ferromagnetic. The transition temperature of the ferrimagnetic phase increases monotonically with increasing Ca concentration., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ system. A comparative and quantitative line shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side ($x=0.20$), a normal state anti-nodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below ~ 80 K. In this process spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different lineshape is observed in the antinodal region of charge ordered Nd-LSCO $x=1/8$. Significant low-energy spectral weight appears to be lost. Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of the elusive $J$~=~0 state. However, we find that local Ir moments are spontaneously generated due to the comparable energy scales of the singlet-triplet splitting driven by SOC and the superexchange interaction mediated by strong intra-dimer hopping. While the Ir ions within the structural Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer prefers to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial interdimer exchange interactions from a frustrated lattice ensure quantum fluctuations till the lowest measured temperatures and stabilize a spin-orbital liquid phase., Comment: Main Text: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; Supplementary: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

We demonstrate the existence of the spin nematic interactions in an easy-plane type antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$CoGe$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by exploring the magnetic anisotropy and spin dynamics. Combination of neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that the origin of the in-plane anisotropy is an antiferro-type interaction of the spin nematic operator. The relation between the nematic operator and the electric polarization in the ligand symmetry of this compound is presented. The introduction of the spin nematic interaction is useful to understand the physics of spin and electric dipole in multiferroic compounds., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report the observation of a stepwise "melting" of the low-temperature Na-vacancy order in the layered transition metal oxide Na0.7CoO2. High-resolution neutron powder diffraction indicates the existence of two first-order structural transitions, one at T1 = 290 K, followed by a second at T2 = 400 K. Detailed analysis reveals that both transitions are linked to changes in the Na mobility. Our data are consistent with a two-step disappearance of Na-vacancy order through the successive opening of first quasi-1D (T1 > T > T2) and then 2D (T > T2) Na diffusion paths. These results shed new light on previous, seemingly incompatible, experimental interpretations regarding the relationship between Na-vacancy order and Na dynamics in this material. We present an angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy study of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta) films in situ grown by pulsed laser deposition. We have successfully produced underdoped surfaces with ordered oxygen vacancies within the CuO chains resulting in a clear ortho-II band folding of the Fermi surface. This indicates that order within the CuO chains affects the electronic properties of the CuO(2) planes. Our results highlight the importance of having not only the correct surface carrier concentration, but also a very well ordered and clean surface in order that photoemission data on this compound be representative of the bulk.

The Cr5+ ions in Sr3Cr2O8 constitute a strongly correlated spin-1/2 dimer system. Experiments show that the collective singlet-triplet excitations in this system are well defined in the zero-temperature limit, but, when heated, the inelastic neutron scattering peaks decrease rapidly in intensity and acquire a nonzero line width. When including the fluctuations to leading order in 1/z, where z is the coordination number, the diagrammatic high-density expansion is found to offer an accurate description of the singlet-triplet excitations. The theory explains not only the temperature dependencies of the intensities and line widths, but also that strong correlation causes the lineshapes to become asymmetric at temperatures comparable to the excitation energies.

We present angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy data probing the electronic structure of the Nd-substituted high-T-c cuprate La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4. Data have been acquired at low and high photon energies, h nu=55 and 500 eV, respectively. The two extracted Fermi surfaces show significant differences. The differences can be attributed to either the change in probing depth suggesting dissimilarity of the intrinsic electronic structure between surface and bulk regions, or a considerable c-axis dispersion signaling a strong interlayer coupling. At both photon energies, considerable spectral weight is observed at all points along the Fermi surface and the intensity distribution as well as Fermi-surface shape observed at low as well as high photon energy is markedly different from what has been previously reported for La1.28Nd0.6Sr0.12CuO4 by Zhou [Science 286, 268 (1999)].

The low-temperature microscopic magnetic properties of the quasi-2D heavy-fermion compound, CePt2In7 are investigated by using a positive muon-spin rotation and relaxation (mu+SR) technique. Clear evidence for the formation of a commensurate antiferromagnetic order below T-N approximate to 5.40 K is presented. The magnetic order parameter is shown to fit well to a modified BCS gap-energy function in a strong-coupling scenario.

electronic band structure of MgB2 involves a unique combination of two-and three-dimensional (3D) electrons derived from the boron sigma and pi states, respectively. We have mapped out the sigma and pi bands over the complete Brillouin zone, including the full disconnected Fermi surface, using high-resolution soft x-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The measured band structure, which is closely related to that of graphene, is in overall good agreement with the density functional theory-general gradient approximation (DFT-GGA), though differences in Fermi surface volume are seen. Surprisingly, the measured bands are wider than calculated, by similar to 8% for the s and similar to 10-15% for the p bands. This solves the long-standing challenge of establishing the full 3D electronic structure of the model compound MgB2, and it demonstrates the tendency of DFT-GGA to overestimate the band narrowing due to exchange correlations effects.

We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba_{3}ZnIr_{2}O_{9} is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba_{3}ZnIr_{2}O_{9} with Ir^{5+} (5d^{4}) ions and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) arrives very close to the elusive J=0 state but each Ir ion still possesses a weak moment. Ab initio density functional calculations indicate that this moment is developed due to superexchange, mediated by a strong intradimer hopping mechanism. While the Ir spins within the structural Ir_{2}O_{9} dimer are expected to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial frustration arising from interdimer exchange interactions induce quantum fluctuations in these possible SOS states favoring a spin-orbital liquid phase down to at least 100 mK.
