Horn functions form a subclass of Boolean functions possessing interesting structural and computational properties. These functions play a fundamental role in algebra, artificial intelligence, combinatorics, computer science, database theory, and logic. In the present paper, we introduce the subclass of hypergraph Horn functions that generalizes matroids and equivalence relations. We provide multiple characterizations of hypergraph Horn functions in terms of implicate-duality and the closure operator, which are respectively regarded as generalizations of matroid duality and Mac Lane-Steinitz exchange property of matroid closure. We also study algorithmic issues on hypergraph Horn functions, and show that the recognition problem (i.e., deciding if a given definite Horn CNF represents a hypergraph Horn function) and key realization (i.e., deciding if a given hypergraph is realized as a key set by a hypergraph Horn function) can be done in polynomial time, while implicate sets can be generated with polynomial delay., Comment: 19 pages

Linear programming (LP) problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems have been intensively studied in economics and operations research, and include the feasibility problem of a class of Horn systems, which arises in, e.g., polyhedral combinatorics and logic. This subclass of LP problems admits a strongly polynomial time algorithm, where devising such an algorithm for general LP problems is one of the major theoretical open questions in mathematical optimization and computer science. Recently, much attention has been paid to devising certifying algorithms in software engineering, since those algorithms enable one to confirm the correctness of outputs of programs with simple computations. In this paper, we provide the first combinatorial (and strongly polynomial time) certifying algorithm for LP problems with gainfree Leontief substitution systems. As a by-product, we answer affirmatively an open question whether the feasibility problem of the class of Horn systems admits a combinatorial certifying algorithm.

In this paper, we study the proportional cost buyback problem. The input is a sequence of elements e 1 , e 2 , … , e n , each of which has a weight w ( e i ) . We assume that weights have an upper and a lower bound, i.e., l ≤ w ( e i ) ≤ u for any i. Given the ith element e i , we either accept e i or reject it with no cost, subject to some constraint on the set of accepted elements. During the iterations, we could cancel some previously accepted elements at a cost that is proportional to the total weight of them. Our goal is to maximize the profit, i.e., the sum of the weights of elements kept until the end minus the total cancellation cost occurred. We consider a matroid and the unweighted knapsack constraints. For either case, we construct optimal online algorithms and prove that they are the best possible.

Reallocation scheduling is one of the most fundamental problems in various areas such as supply chain management, logistics, and transportation science. In this paper, we introduce the reallocation problem that models the scheduling in which products are with fixed cost, non-fungible, and reallocated in parallel, and comprehensively study the complexity of the problem under various settings of the transition time, product size, and capacities. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time for a fundamental setting where the product size and transition time are both uniform. We also show that the feasibility of the problem is NP-complete even for little more general settings, which implies that no polynomial-time algorithm constructs a feasible schedule of the problem unless P$=$NP. We then consider the relaxation of the problem, which we call the capacity augmentation, and derive a reallocation schedule feasible with the augmentation such that the completion time is at most the optimal of the original problem. When the warehouse capacity is sufficiently large, we design constant-factor approximation algorithms under all the settings. In this paper, we consider differential approximability of the traveling salesman problem (TSP). We show that TSP is $3/4$-differential approximable, which improves the currently best known bound $3/4 -O(1/n)$ due to Escoffier and Monnot in 2008, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices in the given graph.

Each voter $i \in I$ has $\alpha_i$ cards that (s)he distributes among the candidates $a \in A$ as a measure of approval. One (or several) candidate(s) who received the maximum number of cards is (are) elected. We provide polynomial algorithms to recognize voting forms and voting correspondences generated by such voting schemes in cases when either the number of candidates or the number of voters is equal to $2$. We prove that for two voters, if $\alpha_2 \geq \alpha_1-2\geq 0$ then the unique voting correspondence has distinct rows. We also characterize voting forms with distinct rows., Comment: 16 pages

In this paper, we introduce online knapsack problems with a resource buffer. In the problems, we are given a knapsack with capacity $1$, a buffer with capacity $R\ge 1$, and items that arrive one by one. Each arriving item has to be taken into the buffer or discarded on its arrival irrevocably. When every item has arrived, we transfer a subset of items in the current buffer into the knapsack. Our goal is to maximize the total value of the items in the knapsack. We consider four variants depending on whether items in the buffer are removable (i.e., we can remove items in the buffer) or non-removable, and proportional (i.e., the value of each item is proportional to its size) or general. For the general&non-removable case, we observe that no constant competitive algorithm exists for any $R\ge 1$. For the proportional&non-removable case, we show that a simple greedy algorithm is optimal for every $R\ge 1$. For the general&removable and the proportional&removable cases, we present optimal algorithms for small $R$ and give asymptotically nearly optimal algorithms for general $R$., Accepted by ISAAC2019

Packing and covering semidefinite programs (SDPs) appear in natural relaxations of many combinatorial optimization problems as well as a number of other applications. Recently, several techniques were proposed, that utilize the particular structure of this class of problems, to obtain more efficient algorithms than those offered by general SDP solvers. For certain applications, such as those described in this paper, it may be desirable to obtain {\it sparse} dual solutions, i.e., those with support size (almost) independent of the number of primal constraints. In this paper, we give an algorithm that finds such solutions, which is an extension of a {\it logarithmic-potential} based algorithm of Grigoriadis, Khachiyan, Porkolab and Villavicencio (SIAM Journal of Optimization 41 (2001)) for packing/covering linear programs.

We give an incremental polynomial time algorithm for enumerating the vertices of any polyhedron $\mathcal{P}(A,\mathbf{1})=\{x\in\RR^n \mid Ax\geq \b1,~x\geq \b0\}$, when $A$ is a totally unimodular matrix. Our algorithm is based on decomposing the hypergraph transversal problem for unimodular hypergraphs using Seymour's decomposition of totally unimodular matrices, and may be of independent interest.

Given a hypergraph $\cH \subseteq 2^I \setminus \{\emptyset\}$ on the ground set $I = \{1, \ldots, n\}$, we assign to each $i \in I$ a nonnegative integer $x_i$, that is a pile of $x_i$ tokens, and consider the following generalization of the classical game of {\sc Nim}: Two players alternate turns. In a move a player chooses an arbitrary edge $H \in \cH$ and reduces all piles $i \in H$. The player who is out of moves loses. We call the obtained game hypergraph {\sc Nim}. Such a game is called proper {\sc Nim}, when $\cH=2^I \setminus\{I,\emptyset\}$ is the family of all proper subsets of $I$. Jenkyns and Mayberry \cite{JM80} described the Sprague-Grundy (or SG in short) function of these games. In this paper we introduce Tetris extensions of hypergraph {\sc Nim}, and obtain a closed formula for the SG functions of the extensions of proper {\sc Nim}, when $n\geq 3$. Surprisingly, the case of $n=2$ is much more complicated. For this case we only suggest several partial results and conjectures.

Given a posimodular function $f: 2^V \to \mathbb{R}$ on a finite set $V$, we consider the problem of finding a nonempty subset $X$ of $V$ that minimizes $f(X)$. Posimodular functions often arise in combinatorial optimization such as undirected cut functions. In this paper, we show that any algorithm for the problem requires $\Omega(2^{\frac{n}{7.54}})$ oracle calls to $f$, where $n=|V|$. It contrasts to the fact that the submodular function minimization, which is another generalization of cut functions, is polynomially solvable. When the range of a given posimodular function is restricted to be $D=\{0,1,...,d\}$ for some nonnegative integer $d$, we show that $\Omega(2^{\frac{d}{15.08}})$ oracle calls are necessary, while we propose an $O(n^dT_f+n^{2d+1})$-time algorithm for the problem. Here, $T_f$ denotes the time needed to evaluate the function value $f(X)$ for a given $X \subseteq V$. We also consider the problem of maximizing a given posimodular function. We show that $\Omega(2^{n-1})$ oracle calls are necessary for solving the problem, and that the problem has time complexity $\Theta(n^{d-1}T_f) $ when $D=\{0,1,..., d\}$ is the range of $f$ for some constant $d$., Comment: 18 pages

We consider Gillette's two-person zero-sum stochastic games with perfect information. For each $k \in \mathbb{Z}_+$ we introduce an effective reward function, called $k$-total. For $k = 0$ and $1$ this function is known as mean payoff and total reward, respectively. We restrict our attention to the deterministic case. For all $k$, we prove the existence of a saddle point which can be realized by uniformly optimal pure stationary strategies. In this paper, we consider two-player zero-sum stochastic mean payoff games with perfect information modeled by a digraph with black, white, and random vertices. These BWR-games games are polynomially equivalent with the classical Gillette games, which include many well-known subclasses, such as cyclic games, simple stochastic games, stochastic parity games, and Markov decision processes. They can also be used to model parlor games such as Chess or Backgammon. It is a long-standing open question if a polynomial algorithm exists that solves BWR-games. In fact, a pseudo-polynomial algorithm for these games with an arbitrary number of random nodes would already imply their polynomial solvability. Currently, only two classes are known to have such a pseudo-polynomial algorithm: BW-games (the case with no random nodes) and ergodic BWR-games (in which the game's value does not depend on the initial position) with constant number of random nodes. In this paper, we show that the existence of a pseudopolynomial algorithm for BWR-games with constant number of random vertices implies smoothed polynomial complexity and the existence of absolute and relative polynomial-time approximation schemes. In particular, we obtain smoothed polynomial complexity and derive absolute and relative approximation schemes for BW-games and ergodic BWR-games (assuming a technical requirement about the probabilities at the random nodes).

In this paper we consider four different definitions for an extension of a partially defined Boolean function in which the input contains some missing bits. We show that, for many general and reasonable families of function classes, three of these extensions are mathematically equivalent. However we also demonstrate that such an equivalence does not hold for all classes.
