Diabetic Foot ulcerations have devastating complications including amputations, poor quality of life, and serious infections. Diabetic wounds can be protracted, take significant time to heal, and can recur after healing. They are costly and consume healthcare resources. These consequences have serious public health and clinical implications. Debridement is often used as a standard of care. Debridement consists of both non-mechanical (autolytic, enzymatic) and mechanical methods (sharp/surgical, wet to dry debridement, aqueous high-pressure lavage, ultrasound, and biosurgery/maggot debridement therapy). Debridement is used to remove nonviable tissue, to facilitate wound healing, and help prevent these serious outcomes. What are the various forms, rationale, and evidence pertaining to debridement? This article comprehensively reviews the science of diabetic foot ulcers, and the science and methods behind the debridement of diabetic foot ulcers.

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is a fly that can produce a maggot or larvae that are useful for human life, like a decomposer waste in the form of composting, animal feed, animal oil production, source of chitin, and for the economic incomes of the society. This study aims to develop a device that can be used to control the maggot cage temperature and humidity using the ESP8266 microcontroller based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The benefit of this study is the utilization of nozzle-based water spraying that can be used to maintain the maggot cage temperature and humidity to improve the quality of maggot cultivation results. In this study, the sensor used to read the temperature and humidity on the maggot cage is DHT11, then used a water spraying method to handle the temperature and humidity controlled by using the ESP8266 and online based on the Blynk IoT platform. This study result shows that the device built in this study can maintain the maggot cage temperature between 28 to 30oC and humidity over 60%.

The common green bottle blow fly Lucilia sericata (family, Calliphoridae) is widely used for maggot debridement therapy, which involves the application of sterile maggots to wounds. The larval excretions and secretions are important for consuming necrotic tissue and inhibiting bacterial growth in wounds of patients. Lucilia sericata is also of importance as a pest of sheep and in forensic studies to estimate a postmortem interval. Here we report the assembly of a 565.3 Mb genome from long read PacBio DNA sequencing of genomic DNA. The genome contains 14,704 predicted protein coding genes and 1709 non-coding genes. Targeted annotation and transcriptional analyses identified genes that are highly expressed in the larval salivary glands (secretions) and Malpighian tubules (excretions) under normal growth conditions and following heat stress. The genomic resources will underpin future genetic studies and in development of engineered strains for genetic control of L. sericata and for biotechnology-enhanced maggot therapy.

Wounds management takes a high interest in the medical field and the addition of antimicrobial agents in an assortment of wound dressings leads to delay the wound healing. This study aimed at preparing natural combination between excretion/secretion (ES) and water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (from Lucilia cuprina maggots) and investigating its antibacterial and wound healing activities. ES of maggots was collected, and the water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (WSCNPs) were prepared and characterized. Antibacterial activities of combinations were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Proteus vulgaris. ES-WSC-2 combination that contains 50% ES and 1% WSCNPs showed highest antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria compared to the other combinations. In vitro, the ES-WSC-2 combination was used to study the wound healing activity by scratch assay. The synergism between ES and WSCNPs (in ES-WSC-2 combination) accelerated the wound healing rate which suggests the use of this combination as an effective natural antibacterial and wound healing agent.

The establishment of low-cost, effective, safe and practical methods is necessary to increase the use of larval therapy in wound care. Although studies on external disinfection of calliphorid eggs have been reported, many studies lack data on the effect of disinfection on egg viability and the microorganisms found before disinfection. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to compare three antiseptic solutions, that is, chlorhexidine (5%), Dakin's solution (0.5% NaOCl) and povidone-iodine (10%), in terms of their ability to disinfect Lucilia sericata eggs. Egg viability after disinfection and microorganisms present on the eggs and larvae before and after treatment were also examined. None of the antiseptics had a significant effect on egg viability. Disinfection of L. sericata eggs with 0.5% NaOCl was the best method, as sterility tests showed no contamination. Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Proteus mirabilis were present in all cultures isolated from the non-disinfected eggs and larvae, while Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, Morganella morganii, Corynebacterium spp. and Providencia stuartii were isolated from more than half of the same cultures. Sterility testing of medicinal maggots after disinfection is crucial to prevent secondary infections and achieve a positive therapeutic outcome.

Organic waste is the largest composition of waste generated by the people of Indonesia, which is around 50-60%. This type of waste, especially food waste, is easy to smell if it is stored for too long so that it has the potential to pollute the environment. On the other hand, organic waste has good nutrients that can be generated, including through BSF (Black Soldier Fly) maggot bioconversion treatment. The BSF maggot bioconversion method is a method of processing organic waste which is carried out by converting organic matter into other products that are useful and have added value by utilizing biological processes from microorganisms and enzymes. Organic waste treatment with this method is generally carried out on a community-based basis and is integrated with the development of agriculture, fisheries and animal husbandry, because maggot cultivation produces commodities of economic value such as compost and maggot larvae. Compost contains very good nutrients so that it can be used for organic farming and maggot contains high protein that can be used for animal feed and fisheries. The implementation of this program was piloted in the boarding school community, namely the Az-Zakaria Islamic Boarding School which is managed by the Az-Zakaria Islamic Education Foundation (YPI) in Sindangbarang Village, Jalaksana District, Kuningan Regency. The result of this implementation is the formation of a new group of entrepreneurs engaged in the cultivation and utilization of BSF maggots.

Somongari Village residents are currently promoting the cultivation of catfish and chicken to make up for their daily side dishes during the pandemic. An alternative feed for these animals that is both high in protein and easy to cultivate is the maggot. The purpose of this training is to teach the residents of Somongari Village how to independently breed BSF maggots and save on feed expenditure. This training is carried out in three stages namely: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The methods used in delivering the material are lectures, demonstrations, and direct practice. Meanwhile, leaflets serve as the media. The results showed that as many as 85.71% of the training participants experienced an increased understanding of maggot cultivation. This activity increased the knowledge and skills of Somongari Village residents in cultivating BSF maggots for daily animal feed purposes.

Chronic wounds caused by underlying physiological causes such as diabetic wounds, pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers and infected wounds affect a significant portion of the population. In order to treat chronic wounds, a strong debridement, removal of necrotic tissue, elimination of infection and stimulation of granulation tissue are required. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT), which is an alternative treatment method based on history, has been used quite widely. MDT is an efficient, simple, cost-effective and reliable biosurgery method using mostly larvae of Lucilia sericata fly species. Larvae can both physically remove necrotic tissue from the wound site and stimulate wound healing by activating molecular processes in the wound area through the enzymes they secrete. The larvae can stimulate wound healing by activating molecular processes in the wound area through enzymes in their excretions/secretions (ES). Studies have shown that ES has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, proliferative, hemostatic and tissue-regenerating effects both in vivo and in vitro. It is suggested that these effects stimulate wound healing and accelerate wound healing by initiating a direct signal cascade with cells in the wound area. However, the enzymes and peptides in ES are mostly still undefined. Examining the molecular content of ES and the biological effects of these ingredients is quite important to illuminate the molecular mechanism underlying MDT. More importantly, ES has the potential to have positive effects on wound healing and to be used more as a therapeutic agent in the future, so it can be applied as an alternative to MDT in wound healing. Commercial feed produced by the factory has a guaranteed quality and quantity. However, the problem is the price of commercial feed produced by factories that are getting more and more expensive and troubling to fish breeders, thus making fish breeders have to look for other alternatives to reduce the cost of feed. Cultivation of maggots or larvae of black soldier fly flies (Hermetia illicens) the right solution to overcome the problem in lieu of high-protein fish feed. Maggot cultivation training activities as an alternative to fish feed are carried out in Carawali Village. The implementation method is done by means of lectures, discussions and practices. The result of this community service activity is the amount of enthusiasm of participants to the training activities by evidenced that the active participants follow the activity from start to finish. In addition, many participants are active in discussion and question and answer sessions. So it can be concluded that the maggot cultivation training in Carawali Village went successfully and smoothly. The continuation of this PKM activity is to train the understanding and attitude of the trainees on the importance of organic waste management for maggot cultivation as an alternative to fish feed.

Summary Background Myiasis is an infestation of neglected open wounds by fly larvae. Global warming, related climate changes, and increased traveling in tropical countries may contribute to the worldwide diffusion of new fly species. Common risk factors for myiasis are advanced age, poor hygiene, malnourishment, social isolation, diabetes, cancer, and peripheral artery disease. The aim of this study was to review the characteristics of cases of myiasis reported in Europe. Methods A narrative review of cutaneous myiasis was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science database, and the search terms “human,” “myiasis,” “cutaneous myiasis,” “maggot,” “Europe,” “wound,” with the combination of “AND” and “OR.” In addition, hospital charts were reviewed to add personal experience to the literature review. Results Overall, 52 articles, both single case reports and case series reporting cutaneous myiasis, were found in the medical literature of the past two decades. A total of 64 patients living in Europe were identified, of whom 36% had wound myiasis. In addition to the literature review, we report the case of a male patient who presented with myiasis within a deep scalp ulcer occurring after radiotherapy for basal cell carcinoma. Conclusion Myasis is rare and possibly under-reported in Europe. The epidemiology of this infestation may be changing in the future due to climate variability, a rise in travel to tropical areas, and the migration of fly species.

The city of Padang produces approximately 600 tons of waste daily, which includes the categories of recyclable and non-recyclable waste. However, the percentage of waste that can be recycled is only about 17% and the rest must be heaped into end landfill every day. The category of recycled waste is counted as much as 65% is organic waste that is made into compost and 35% is both plastic and paper waste that is processed into other products. Maggot, which is the larva of the Black Soldier Fly, is an organic matter-decomposing agent that has better decomposition capabilities than other organisms. Maggot has biomass with high protein and fat content. Maggot farming is the most appropriate effort needed by the community today, because in addition to processing daily organic waste, it will also produce feed for livestock such as chicken, duck, fish, and bird. The farming process only requires simple technology and low cost, but is able to reduce the earth's waste load. The Andalas University community service team provided training on maggot farming to process organic waste from community households. The training was carried out using the Hybrid method, which is a combination of offline and online techniques with the same goal. The activity began with counseling on theoretical explanations, followed by both the farming practices and further program assisting. It hopes that the activity will be improved by other trainings such as Maggot’s processing into more valuable products, so that it can be packaged in such a way as to be marketed to the target purchasers.

Forensic entomology offers insects as physical evidence during legal procedures. Forensic entomologists have determined succession of arthropods on dead animals, but few published studies are available on necrophagous larvae collected on carcasses around the world. This study evaluated the diversity of arthropods associated with rat carcasses to identify species of forensic relevance. Larvae hatched from arthropod eggs were reared until the emergence of adult flies under ambient laboratory conditions. Adult flies were identified to species level. Overall, 6319 individuals belonging to 6 families, 13 genera and 21 species of Diptera emerged.

This study aimed to evaluate the in sacco nutrient degradability of total mixed ration (TMR) silage containing intact and defatted black soldier fly (BSF) larvae. The study evaluated four dietary treatments and six replications. The treatments consisted of control TMR silage without BSF larvae (R1), 20% intact BSF larvae + 80% TMR silage (R2), 20% chemically defatted BSF larvae + 80% TMR silage (R3), and 20% mechanically defatted BSF larvae + 80% TMR silage (R4). Samples were placed in polyester bags and incubated in the rumen in sacco up to 72 h. Nutrient degradability was evaluated for each time point interval. Results revealed that the lowest dry matter degradability (DMD) was found in R1 compared to all treatments (p < 0.05), while the highest DMD was found in R2 (p < 0.05). The highest organic matter degradability was found in R2 compared to R1, R3 and R4 (p < 0.05). Addition of BSF larvae to TMR silage increased the crude protein degradability (p < 0.05). In conclusion, inclusion of both intact and defatted BSF larvae into TMR silage did not have any adverse effects on nutrient profiles and showed a good nutrient degradation values in the rumen.

Good quality animal feed was a determining factor for the success of livestock industry. Maggot BSF had the potential as a promising protein source feed. The aimed of this researceh was to investigate digestibility of crude protein, dry matter, organic matter of BSF maggot flour. The maggot was kept in media of fermented palm oil coir (FPOC) with dose of fermenter 1, 3, 5%. The maggot processed into flour and fed to kampong chickens. The reseach was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The purpose of this study is to determine the differences of chemical quality of fresh maggot flour processed by using sangrai method. Currently maggot flour is popular among breeders because it contents high enough protein and has potential as a substitution of fish meal which has been imported at in very costly price. This research is conducted experimental methods on April 2021. The research consists of making maggot flour and continued to chemical analysis (proximate). Maggot which is processed into flour is obtained from maggot breeders in Blitar district. Maggot is processed by using sangrai method is carried out in Dayu Village, Nglegok District, Blitar Regency. Proximate analysis is carried out at the Nutrition and Animal Feed Laboratory of the Fisheries and Livestock Service Office of Blitar Regency. The sangrai method processing produces lower moisture content (5.69%) so that it is predicted to have a better shelf life. The rough protein is 28.73%, the rough fat content is 15.79%, and the rough fiber content is 10.60%. The results are considering higher. The maggot processed by using sangrai method can be applied, but it needs to be accompanied by further researches to reduce the higher rough fat and rough fiber content, one of them is fermentation.

Unhygienic conditions attract organisms into the pathological lesion and worsen the condition, here is a case wherein the patient with psoriatic skin lesions took treatment from an unqualified person and in addition his unhygienic habit attracted maggots into the foot eating away a major chunk of his normal tissues. The case was diagnosed and treated in lines with fundamental principles of Sushruta. The case is a best example of maggots destructive and repair effect on the tissue, the wound with maggots presence healed faster than with wound without maggots.

This study aimed to determine the production of BSF maggots as feed cultivated with different media. The research material was 6 grams of BSF larvae eggs. The method used in this study was an experiment with a completely randomized design (CRD) where there were four treatments three times repetition so that 12 experimental units were obtained. The experiment consisted of P0 = rice bran, P1 = market waste, P2 = household waste, and P3 = Restaurant Waste. The results showed that BSF maggot production used different media against rice bran, market waste, household waste, and restaurant waste had a significant effect (P> 0.05) on the maggot production. The best treatment is in the P3 treatment, and the lowest treatment is in the P0 treatment, where the P3 treatment uses a comparison of the restaurant's organic waste media with the same amount, namely 7.3 kg to 21 days of age from 0.50 grams of BSF maggot eggs and is able to produce 2816.66 adult maggot gram

Bacteremia induced by wound myiasis is uncommon and therefore rarely suspected by clinicians when treating patients with neglected wounds. We present a case of Ignatzschineria larvae bacteremia as a complication of Lucilia sp. maggot wound myiasis in a young male migrant. This is the first reported human case of Ignatzschineria bacteremia in Slovenia and one of the 2 described in the literature where the fly larvae infesting the wounds of the patient with Ignatzschineria bacteremia were not only suspected to be Lucilia sp. but also entomologically identified.

Self-inflicting injuries are common among special children. One of the complications is Oral Myiasis. 11 yr old spastic female reported with pain and swelling in palatal region due to trauma from wooden stick. Oral examination revealed, an ulcerated lesion measuring about 2 cm × 1 cm in relation to 11 and 12. 4 live maggots were removed from the ulcerated wound which after entomological examination was reported as Chrysomya Bezziana. Uniqueness of the case This case describes a non-invasive management of Oral myiasis in a special child with poor socioeconomic condition which demanded out-patient care which was clinically effective and affordable.

The development of the digestive tract organs is closely related to the increased body weight growth in chickens. The present study aimed to determine the effect of using maggot meal as an antibacterial and protein source of fish meal substitution in diets on the relative length of the digestive tract organs, small intestine histomorphology,and the percentage of the native chicken carcass. A total of 140 one-day-old chickens were randomly assigned to one of the five treatments according to a completely randomized design with four replications for each treatment. The treatments included P0 (basal diet + 15% fish meal + 0% maggot meal), P1(basal diet + 11.25% fish meal + 3.75% maggot meal), P2 (basal diet + 7.5% fish meal + 7.5% maggot meal), P3(basal diet + 3.75% fish meal + 11.25% maggot meal), and P4 (basal diet + 0% fish meal + 15% maggot meal). The results showed that the use of maggot meal in P3 had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the relative length, villi height, depth of duodenal crypt, jejunum and ileum, villi surface area, the density of jejunum and ileum villi, and percentage of thigh and wing weight. Besides, the treatment tended to increase the relative length of the caecum and colon, surface area of the duodenal villi, and chest weight percentage. However, the treatment did not affect the duodenal villi density and percentage of back weight in native chickens. The use of maggot meal up to 11.25% in diets can improve the relative length of intestinal, histomorphology of small intestine’s villi, and the percentage of carcass parts of native chickens.

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of maggot media that can produce the highest survival, growth, feed efficiency and lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) to Striped catfish fingerling. This research was conducted during July 2020 – January 2021 at the Laboratory of Building 4, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran. The research method was carried out experimentally using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method and four treatments. The treatment given is a combination of commercial feed and maggot with different media consisting of A (50% commercial feed + maggot with 50% mixed media), B (50% commercial feed + maggot with 50% fruit media), C (50% commercial feed + maggot with 50% layer media) and D (50% commercial feed + maggot with 50% bran media). The parameters observed were survival, daily weight growth rate, length, feed efficiency, food conversion ratio and water quality. . Giving a combination of 50% commercial feed and cultured maggot with mixed media of 50% gave the best daily growth rate, length growth and feed efficiency results, namely 1.23%, 0.99% and 62.79% and the lowest feed conversion ratio value. that is 1.67.

Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) has been used for years in the treatment of chronic wounds and necrotic tissues. We report a case of subtotally amputated third toe that was treated with MDT after reattachment and developing complete necrosis. The necrotic toe was replaced with viable tissue and the wound healed completely after 2 weeks of MDT application. This case points out the regenerative effects of MDT besides its mechanical debridement effect on the necrotic tissue.

Forensic entomotoxicology has grown to impact judicial systems in developed countries. Where the use of insects and maggots as samples in death investigations as an alternative technique, especially following degradation or loss of the conventionally used samples. Carrion flies feed on dead bodies and may ingest toxic substances found in the dead body, especially when the body was poisoned before death. The knowledge of how the chemicals interact with the insect following ingestion is crucial to forensic entomotoxicologists. The study investigated the impact of dimethoate on the life cycle of four species of Calliphoridae flies, namely Chrysomya megacephala, Chrysomya saffranea, Chrysomya rufifacies and Chrysomya indiana. Various concentrations of dimethoate (1 ppm, 2 ppm, 3 ppm and 4 ppm) were utilized in the study. The rate of development of the carrion flies showed a negative correlation with the concentration of the chemical. This paper glares at the impact of the chemicals may pose to the insects, and how analysis of such impacts can guide forensic investigations of poisoning and help the investigators to solve the crime puzzle.

This study aims to assess BSF maggot flour’s quality using water hyacinth growing media and fermentedfruit waste using EM-4 and molasses. Held a total of 70 g of baby maggot was in the temple for 15 days.Eldest the feed used using fermented water hyacinth and fermented fruit waste with four treatmentsconsist of P0= 0% fermented water hyacinth+ 100% fermented fruit waste, P1= 25% fermented waterhyacinth+ 75% fermented fruit waste, P2= 50% fermented water hyacinth+ 50% fermented fruit waste,and 75% fermented water hyacinth+ 25% fermented fruit waste. The design of the experiment uses acompletely randomized design (CRD). The results showed that substitution of feeding 25% fermentedwater hyacinth+ 75% fermented fruit waste influenced the yield of BSF maggot flour (P 0.05). The best results’ (substitution of feeding25% fermented water hyacinth+ 75% fermented fruit waste) has proximate content of dry matter89%, ash 11%, crude protein 35.5%, crude fat 12%, calcium 7%, nitrogen-free extract material 7%,metabolist energy 2939.64 kcal/ 100 g.

Lucilia sericata, one of the most common species of the Calliphoridae family, is found in large numbers around droppings, garbage and carcasses. This fly species is important in medicine, forensics and veterinary medicine. The larvae of the parasite are important both in veterinary medicine and in combating of the animal diseases, as they cause significant losses in animal production. Since they are one of the first fly colonies to settle on corpses, they can also be used in determining the time of death in the field of forensic medicine. L.sericata larvae used in Maggot debridement treatment (MDT) which is a treatment method with fly larvae, help wound healing by destroying necrotic tissues and infectious agents in wounds. While the larvae protect themselves from polymicrobial flora with the proteins they secrete; at the same time, they make an interesting contribution to wound healing with these molecules secreted. One of the most important molecules discovered in recent years is lucimycin which has an antifungal effect. In addition, lucifensin and chymotrypsin secretions have gained importance in recent years due to their antibacterial effects and especially their effects on resistant gram-negative and positive bacteria. There is a need for the discovery of the molecules that can be alternative in the treatment of non-healing wounds or that can be applied together with existing antibiotics. It is necessary to investigate the antimicrobial characterization of the compounds involved in maggot therapy and their mechanisms. The aim of this study was to clone, molecular characterization and analysis of the antigenic structures of lucifensin and chymotrypsin genes, which are important defensin molecules secreted by L.sericata larvae used in MDT. Primarily, the cultivation of L.sericata colonies to be used in molecular studies were performed. Later, RNA isolation and cDNA synthesis from larvae were carried out. Lucifensin and chymotrypsin genes were individually inserted into the pJet1.2 plasmid by cloning reactions. The presence of the recombinant plasmid was confirmed by PCR screening and DNA sequence analysis methods in all steps. Nucleotide and amino acid based molecular characterizations of these two genes, which are important larval components in wound treatment, have been made. Antigenic regions and three-dimensional structures of the proteins were obtained. The isolate numbered MT495795 of the L.sericata lucifensin gene and the isolate numbered MT495794 of the chymotrypsin gene were registered to GenBank. This data reported for the first time in the Republic of Turkey will contribute to the literature. From the beginning of the 20th century until the discovery of the antibiotics, MDT was applied especially on soldiers but did not find much application area after the discovery of the antibiotics. Drug resistance, which is the most important problem encountered in the treatment of the wounds today, has led to the recall of MDT and its mechanism of action. In this study the data, obtained will constitute a source for the multidisciplinary studies of the scientists from different fields on the discovery and applicability of the important molecules in the treatment of the wounds.

Blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) species Lucilia sericata (Meigen) and related species Lucilia cuprina (Wiedmann) are important agricultural pests, assist in forensic fields and also have a therapeutic role in medicine. Both species (though predominantly L. sericata) are utilised in a clinical setting for maggot debridement therapy (MDT) where the larvae ingest necrotic tissue and bacteria from non-healing wounds. Conversely, larvae of L. cuprina feed invasively, as major initiators of sheep myiasis in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, among other regions. Both species exhibit larval and adult interactions with bacterially rich environments, but the significance of this in the composition of their microbiome has yet to be considered. This study utilised dissected samples of digestive and reproductive organs from both disinfected and non-disinfected adults and larvae of both species for bacterial DNA extraction, followed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Sequencing data indicated unsurprisingly that digestive tracts of both genders and female salivary glands from all non-disinfected samples carry the most concentrated amounts of bacteria. Genera Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium were also highly represented within all organs and species analysed. Comparison of bait lures to sample sequence read output of insect specimens showed no correlation with genera such as Pseudomonas present in insects, while absent from wild bait, and in reduced amounts from fleece bait profiles. With this information, future work can focus on key organs such as the spermathecae and salivary glands, while also providing the potential to identify the role these bacteria may play in the blowfly life cycle. KEY POINTS: Genera Pseudomonas appears consistently in the microbiome of Lucilia species. Female spermathecae and salivary glands show the highest microbial diversity. Bacterial profiles of L. sericata and L. cuprina have similar composition.

Laying hens (53 weeks old) were fed a basal diet with 9% fish meal and diets in which housefly maggots (Musca domestica, Linn) replaced 33.3, 66.7 and 100% of the fish meal in the basal diet during a 6-week trial period. Average daily feed intake were 125.1, 115.1, 109.1 and 105.7g respectively (P0.05). There was also no significant effects of the treatments on protein or fat retention by laying hens. It is concluded that housefly maggots could replace fish meal (9%) in layer's diet without detrimental effects on their performance. Maggots is a cheap alternative to fishmeal in laying hen diets, the cost of its production being only 15% of the equivalent weight of fishmeal.

The effects of replacing O, 33.3, 66.7 or 100% of dietary fish meal (9%) with housefly maggots ( Musca domestica. Linn ) was investigated using broilers from day old to 5 weeks of age. Increasing the dietary level of maggots reduced feed intake and weight gain while increasing the feed; gain ratio (P>0.05). There was however no significant effect of dietary maggots on mortality rate (P>0.05). Replacement of dietary fish meal with maggots caused significant reduction in niti·ogen retention (P 0.05). There was no significant effect of replacing dietary fish meal with maggots on the metabolizable energy value of the diets (P>0.05). It is concluded that maggots could replace only 33% of dietary fish meal (9%) without compromising performance and nutrient retention in broiler chicks. The cost of harvesting and processing maggots is about 15% of equivalent weight of fish meal, making even partial replacement of fishmeal with maggots economical. The economics of production of broiler chickens considered for 0-35 days, 35-56 days, and 0-56 days was compared for fishmeal (FM) and maggot meal (MM) diets. The maggot meal diet had a replacement of the fish meal at 75%> on protein basis. Replacing FM at 75% with MM resulted in reduced cost of feed as well as cost /kilogramme weight gain of broiler chicken at starter, finisher and the overall production period. Consequently, net returns was raised by 15.79%, 12.28% and 13.63% respectively at the starter, finisher and during the overall production period. The increase in net returns are encouraging as the least cost diet had no negative effect on the performance of the birds. Therefore the profit-maximising objective of commercial broiler enterprises is achieveably by MM utilization in broiler feed as replacement for FM under this condition of reduced cost of production. Biology, incidence and morphometrics of the ber fruit fly Carpomyia vesuviana Costa were studied onIndian jujube Ziziphus mauritiana Lamark. The observations revealed that the female laid its eggs in thecavities made by the ovipositor, just beneath the skin of the fruit. The eggs were small, elongate, spindleshaped and creamy white. The duration of lifestages (in days) were- egg 1.90, maggot 8.75, prepupal 4.43(hr), pupal 8.40, adult longevity 13.85; with a total lifecycle of 29.95 days. The length, width and wingexpanse of female measured up to 4.82, 1.33 and 3.91 mm, respectively; and that of male 4.44, 1.21 and3.83 mm, respectively. The incidence was maximum in October followed by December, with the least beingin January. Correlation coefficients of incidence with weather factors revealed a significant and positiveone with maximum RH (0.70) and negative with maximum temperature (-0.54).&nbsp

Bioconversion is one of the ways to treat organic waste (market abundance) which is a problem today, namely by utilizing microorganisms such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae as biodegradation agents. This study aims to study the life cycle of BSF in market waste media and to determine the potential of BSF larvae to break down market waste. This research was conducted for 8 months starting from the pre-study until the implementation of the study. The observation phases carried out in this study included 1) the life cycle of BSF in the chopped and non-chopped organic market waste media. 2) the potential of BSF larva / maggot in breaking down chopped and not chopped organic market waste. The results showed that the hatching process from eggs to larvae took three to four days. The larval phase which is still yellowish white lasts approximately 12 days, in this phase the larvae will need a lot of food. The prepupa phase occurs from the 19th day and the pupal phase is 100% achieved on the 24-26th day. This study was conducted to evaluate the reproductive potential of native chickens by examining the correlation between body weight and spermatozoa motility. The correlation analysis results obtained a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.475. The results in this research was a significant value of 0.196>0.05 means that statistically, there is a relationship between body weight and spermatozoa motility. Still, the correlation between body weight and spermatozoa is weak. Bodyweight gain is one parameter that can be used as a production standard. Based on the results studied, it can be concluded that there is a relationship with the correlation value between body weight and spermatozoa motility of male cocks with BSF Magot feeding.

The maggots of the drone fly Eristalis tenax (Diptera) have survived in habitats with extreme microbial contamination. Despite this polluted environment, they avoid infection by microorganisms. We have investigated the first physical barrier, the cuticle surface of E. tenax maggots collected from Alakrasha dain, Egypt, using scanning electron microscopy which revealed an array of high density and dimensions of nano and microstructures that narrow to sharp points appear to make it difficult for bacteria to colonize its surface which interferes with the formation of biofilms and potentially acts as a defense against bacterial infection. This investigation leading us to more examine the antibacterial properties of the whole maggot extract naturally without any previous simulation, the results were promising against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Staphylococcus mutans ATCC 25175, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella enterica Serotype Typhimurium ATCC 14028 bacteria compared to Nitrofurantoin antibiotic. Such antibacterial properties of both the maggot cuticle surface and the whole maggot extract have applications in many different fields, including antibacterial surfaces and biofilms besides the future isolating and developing of antimicrobial peptides from the maggot crude extract which could be a breakthrough against antibiotic resistance.

In this study, the effect of three different sources of maggot meals was conducted to evaluate the performance and slaughter characteristics of broiler chickens. Five diets were formulated to include Diet 1 (control) which contained 3.5 % fish meal, while Diets 2, 3 and 4 contained 3.5% maggot meal from broiler droppings (BMM),maggot meal from layers droppings (LMM) and maggot meal from rabbit faeces (RMM) respectively. Searching for least cost feed component should be extended to unconventional feedstuffs that are locally available and cheaper to come by. Therefore, an eight-week experiment was carried out to determine the effect of different protein sources (maggot, termite, grasshopper and lizard meal) on performance of broiler chickens. A total of one hundred and fifty (150), one day-old broiler chicks of Marshall Breed were used for the experiment. An eight-weekstudy was conducted to evaluate the performance of broiler chickens fed the four different sources of animal protein. Diet I contained 5% fish meal while Diets 2, 3, 4 and 5 contained 5% maggot meal, termite meal, grasshopper meal and lizard meal, respectively at the starter phase. The finisher phase contained 2.5kg each of the protein sources respectively. The chicks were allotted to five dietary treatments each replicated thrice with ten birds perreplicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). Objective: In critical limb ischaemia (CLI), first-line therapy is revascularisation, but alternative treatment options are needed in certain cases. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is historically considered to be contraindicated in ischaemic ulcers. Wound care in patients with CLI is becoming increasingly diverse with the development of novel revascularisation strategies; therefore, CLI now needs to be reconsidered as an indication for MDT. Method: We retrospectively reviewed five legs with CLI (five male, one female) treated with MDT between January 2013 and December 2017. Changes in skin perfusion pressure (SPP) around the ulcer before and after MDT were evaluated. One or two cycles of MDT were performed (eight in total). We also evaluated the proportion of necrotic tissue in the ulcer and the presence of exposed necrotic bone. The proportion of necrotic tissue in the ulcer was classified as NT 1+ (75%). Results: When the proportion of necrotic tissue was >50%, with no exposed necrotic bone in the wound, an increase in SPP was observed after five (62.5%) of eight cycles of MDT. And with a proportion of necrotic tissue of Conclusion: Effective MDT with increased SPP requires an ulcerative state of necrotic tissue grade > NT 3+, with no exposed necrotic bone.

The utilization of maggot as larvae from black soldier fly is an alternative substitution of fish meal as the primary protein source in fish feed. Maggot is cultivated in 3 different cultivation, the medium used is organic waste, tofu waste, and wheat pollard. The method that used in this research is Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 3 replication. This study aims to determine the effect of various types of maggot growth media, 1) with maggot biomass parameters, containers, and growing media conditions maggot, 2) then, exact proximate composition, total amino acids content of the prepupae samples were determined. Based on the results of the analysis, each dose of treatment (media) has an influence on the different maggot biomass. The best media treatment results are pollard flour. The proximate analysis showed that BSF larvae had a protein content of 50,88% and also fat content of 15%.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the skin by fly larvae, which usually occurs in adults. We present a case of cutaneous myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephalain a 3-month-old infant with psoriasis vulgaris. In this case report, we highlight the clinical, histopathologic, taxonomic identification, and treatment of cutaneous myiasis occurring in psoriatic skin.

The purpose of this research was to determine the appropriate combination of commercial feed and maggot to produce optimum growth, feed efficiency and food conversion ratio for catfish. This research used experimental method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments and four replications. The study was conducted in the Ciparanje Land Fisheries Area, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Padjadjaran University. The research was carried out between January - July 2019. The treatments are combination of commercial feed and maggots consisting of A (control, 100% commercial feed), B (75% commercial feed + 25% maggot), C (50% commercial feed + 50% maggot) and D (25% commercial feed + 75% maggot). The parameters observed were survival rate, daily growth rate, length ratio, feed efficiency, food conversion ratio and water quality. The combination of commercial feed and maggots affected the daily growth rate, length ratio, feed efficiency and food conversion ratio of catfish. The survival rate of each treatment was 88.75, 92.50%. Treatment C showed the value of highest daily growth rate, length ratio, feed efficiency namely 1.86%, 1.40%, 65.09% respectively and the lowest feed conversion ratio 1.54%.

The aim of the study to find out low cast herbal preparation to control myiasis in pig. The pigs were examined for the presence of myiasis and Tamarind seed coat powder was prepared to control myiasis in pigs. A total 56 pigs (White Yorkshire and crossbred pigs) were examined for the presence of maggot infestation at Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. Overall prevalence of myiasis in pig was 48.21%. The efficacy of Tamarind seed coat (TSC) powder was carried out in 27 pigs which were naturally infested with maggot wound at Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam, Tamil Nadu. In all the pigs, no maggots observed after 4-5th day after treatment with Tamarind seed coat powder and complete healing of the wound was noticed after 7-8th day, indicating the application of Tamarind seed coat was effective in treating maggot wound on pigs.

The objective of this study was to compare maggots’ production in different substrates following an experimental design of six treatments (S1, 1000 g of brewery wet grains - BWG; S2, 900 g of BWG and 100 g of blood; S3, 1000 g of dung; S4, 900 g of dung and 100 g of blood; S5, 1000 g of rumen content; and S6, 900 g of rumen content and 100 g of blood) repeated trice. 121 flies were collected and identified and 5 days after putting in place the experimental set up, larvae were collected. 6 families of flies, namely Calliphoridae (50.41%), Muscidae (18.18%), Sacrophagidae (12.40%), Strationomiydae (8.26%), Piophilidae (5.79%) and Syrphidae (4.96%) were identified. The highest fresh biomass (41.67±3.51 g) was obtained with S6 and S2 (21.33±15.63 g). The mean highest length (2.62±1.01 cm) was obtained with S3. The highest dry matter (DM) (23.89±2.90%) was obtained with S2 and the lowest DM with S6 (13.56±2.90%). The lowest values of crude proteins (CP) were obtained in S4 (32.82±10.05%) and S6 (33.82±0.18%). Highest fats contents were obtained in S2 (43.93±1.46%) and S4 (26.99±1.12%). This study investigated the relationships between numbers of Delia species (Delia spp. Rob.-Desv., Diptera: Anthomyiidae) flies or eggs and root injury levels of Brassica napus L. and Brassica rapa L. (Brassicaceae) canola (oilseed rape), and between root injury levels and canola seed yields. Wild-collected Delia species adult flies or laboratory-obtained Delia radicum (L.) eggs were introduced into laboratory or field cages containing B. napus or B. rapa plants. The degree of root injury was strongly associated with infestation level using both flies and eggs. Linear response curves between numbers of Delia flies and root injury levels and quadrilinear response curves between numbers of D. radicum eggs and root injury levels showed that root damage increased with increasing levels of infestation; at high egg infestation levels, root damage levelled off in both Brassica species. Seed yield was not clearly related to fly or egg infestation rate, nor to ensuing root damage. No consistent yield relationship in B. napus ‘AC Excel’ was found with levels of root damage seen in the investigation. Conversely, B. rapa cultivar ‘AC Boreal’ seed yields tended to increase above uninfested controls when feeding damage was light but decreased with increased root injury. Despite procedures used to prevent infestation in Delia-free control cages, some root maggot damage was found in control cages in all 4 yr of the field study. Changes in climate, land use patterns, and cropping systems could influence the economic impact of this pest complex on canola in the future.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the hematology, serum biochemistry, immune responses and oxidative damage of growing beagles fed a diet supplemented with housefly (Musca domestica) maggot meal (MM). Weanling beagles (initial body weight 2.69 ± 0.17 kg) were fed a control diet (0% MM) or experimental diet (5% MM) for 42 days. The results indicated that the diet supplemented with 5% MM had no significant effects on the hematology and serum biochemistry of growing beagles (P>0.05). Meanwhile, neither the serum concentrations of lysozyme and C-reactive protein nor the serum antibody responses to canine distemper virus and canine parvovirus were influenced by dietary MM supplementation (P>0.05). Introduction: Myiasis is common in tropical regions, but now increasing incidence is seen in the west due to international travel. Otorhinolaryngological myiasis is uncommon and is seen in diabetics, alcoholics or patients unable in self-care.Objectives: To study presentations of otorhinolaryngological myiasis, identify associated risk factors and species of flies causing myiasis.Methods: Clinical findings and co-morbidities of 67 myiasis cases were noted. Maggots were identified, manually removed, and patients were managed with topical treatment, systemic ivermectin and antibiotics.Findings: Thirty-three nasal myiasis, 13 aural myiasis and 5 patients with oral myiasis were noted. Seven patients with head neck wounds myiasis and nine patients of tracheostome myiasis were recorded.Discussion: Warm humid climate of tropical regions is a major concern along with co-existing conditions like poor sanitation, alcoholism, psychiatric diseases and neuropathies. Hesitancy is seen in attendants and health care professionals to deal with myiasis.Conclusion: Awareness about risk factors is important in avoiding myiasis along with prompt treatment which reduces morbidity. The maximization of organic substrates production for land sustainable management is a major challenge for agricultural production in countries like Burkina Faso. The objective of this study was to assess the quantity and the quality of organic substrates produced by poultry activity on station. Therefore, 54 local chickens at eighteen months old were allocated to 3 batches (boxes), with 18 chickens per batch. Rice husk was spread on the floor of the 3 boxes as litter for the chickens. The chickens were reared on the litter for 6 months in semi-confinement. Then, the poultry litter (PL) was used as substrate for maggots’ production. The quantities and the chemical characteristics of the raw PL as well as the residues of the litter after maggots’ production (RMP) were determined, and, simulations were done to estimate the quantities of organic substrates and the chemical nutrients that poultry farms can produce. The results show a production of 226.06 kg DM of PL after 6 months of semi- confinement, with a decrease of 30.33% when the PL was used to produce maggots. Carbon and nitrogen contents also registered a decreased of 8.83 and 8.39% respectively when PL was used to produce maggots. However, with phosphorus and potassium contents, an increase of 49.12 and 34.21% were noted, respectively. It was concluded that small poultry farmers with 30 to 100 adult chickens, could produce the equivalence of 100 to 300 kg of fertilizer (NPK (15-15-15)) in semi-confinement condition.Keywords: local poultry, litter, organics substrates, maggot production, fertilizer, small farm.

The concentrations of lead (Pb), barium (Ba), and antimony (Sb), characteristic of GSR, were determined in soil sediments and immature (larvae) of cadaveric flies of the family Calliphoridae, by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This research refers to a case study from two real crime scenes in which the corpses were in an advanced state of decomposition. In case 1, the victim had holes similar to gunshot wounds, and in case 2, there was no evidence of perforations in the corpse. Soil sediment collection was performed at three different points of the terrain, at a minimum distance of 10 m from the corpse, for cases 1 and 2. In relation to the collection of immatures, larvae were collected in regions of the mouth, nose, and orifices similar to the entry of firearms projectile into the body, for case 1, and collection of larvae and pupae, located on the body and underneath it, for case 2. It was possible to detect and quantify the three elements of interest (Pb, Ba, and Sb) by ICP-MS in both sediment and cadaveric larvae. Concentrations of 4.44, 8.74, and 0.08 μg/g were obtained for Pb, Ba, and Sb, respectively, in the soil for case 1. For the case 2, the concentrations in Pb, Ba, and Sb were from 16.34 to 26.02 μg/g; from 32.64 to 57.97 μg/g and from 0.042 to 0.30 μg/g, respectively.
