We report on observations of several optical emission lines toward a variety of newly revealed faint, large-scale H-alpha-emitting structures in the warm ionized medium (WIM) of the Galaxy. The lines include [N II] 6583, [N II] 5755, [S II] 6716, [O III] 5007, and He I 5876 and were obtained with the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) toward sightlines that probe both large filamentary features and the more diffuse WIM, from the outer Perseus spiral arm to the inner Galaxy. These emission lines allow us to explore the temperature and ionization conditions within the emitting gas and their variations between the different emission regions. We compare the relative intensities of the emission lines toward these faint H II structures to brighter, classical O star H II regions. We find that the line ratios of [N II]/H-alpha and [S II]/H-alpha are generally high, while [O III]/H-alpha and He I/H-alpha are generally low in the diffuse WIM and in the faint filamentary structures. This suggests that the gas is warmer, in a lower ionization state, and ionized by a softer spectrum than the gas in classical H II regions surrounding O stars, the presumed ionization source for the WIM. In addition, we find differences in the physical conditions between the large filamentary structures and the more diffuse WIM, suggesting that the filaments are regions of higher density, not geometrical projections of folds in large sheet-like or shell-like structures., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) has surveyed the distribution and kinematics of ionized gas in the Galaxy above declination -30 degrees. The WHAM Northern Sky Survey (WHAM-NSS) has an angular resolution of one degree and provides the first absolutely-calibrated, kinematically-resolved map of the H-Alpha emission from the Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) within ~ +/-100 km/s of the Local Standard of Rest. Leveraging WHAM's 12 km/s spectral resolution, we have modeled and removed atmospheric emission and zodiacal absorption features from each of the 37,565 spectra. The resulting H-Alpha profiles reveal ionized gas detected in nearly every direction on the sky with a sensitivity of 0.15 R (3 sigma). Complex distributions of ionized gas are revealed in the nearby spiral arms up to 1-2 kpc away from the Galactic plane. Toward the inner Galaxy, the WHAM-NSS provides information about the WIM out to the tangent point down to a few degrees from the plane. Ionized gas is also detected toward many intermediate velocity clouds at high latitudes. Several new H II regions are revealed around early B-stars and evolved stellar cores (sdB/O). This work presents the details of the instrument, the survey, and the data reduction techniques. The WHAM-NSS is also presented and analyzed for its gross properties. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) has completed a velocity-resolved map of diffuse H-alpha emission of the entire northern sky, providing the first comprehensive picture of both the distribution and kinematics of diffuse ionized gas in the Galaxy. WHAM continues to advance our understanding of the physical conditions of the warm ionized medium through observations of other optical emission lines throughout the Galactic disk and halo. We discuss some highlights from the survey, including an optical window into the inner Galaxy and the relationship between HI and HII in the diffuse ISM., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) has completed a one-degree resolution, velocity-resolved northern sky survey of H-alpha emission from our Galaxy. The unprecedented sensitivity of the instrument and accurate spectral subtraction of atmospheric features allow us to detect Galactic features as faint as 0.1 Rayleighs (EM ~ 0.25 cm^{-6} pc). This survey allows a direct comparison of the ionized and neutral components of the ISM on a global scale for the first time. All-sky maps of H-alpha emission in select velocity bands highlight the rich kinematic structure of the Galaxy's ionized gas. Isolated preparations from the circular muscle layer of the human oesophago-gastric junction were mounted in organ baths and isometric tension recorded. During an equilibration period, active resting tension developed suggesting that the preparations were representing the lower oesophageal sphincter. Active tension was abolished by exposing the preparations to Ca(++)-free medium. The two xanthines theophylline and enprofylline almost equipotently relaxed the preparations in a concentration-dependent manner (10(-7)-10(-3) M). Within therapeutic concentrations, theophylline inhibited active resting tension by 30-60%, while enprofylline lowered tension by less than 20%. Inhibitory actions of adenosine were demonstrated, and this suggests that adenosine antagonism is not the mechanism of action for xanthines in the oesophagus. Non-selective beta-receptor stimulation with isoprenaline inhibited active tension by 70% (10(-7) M), while beta 2-receptor stimulation with terbutaline inhibited tension by 47% (10(-5) M). Dobutamine, believed to preferentially stimulate beta 1-receptors, inhibited active tension in a concentration-dependent manner (10(-7)-10(-4) M). Metoprolol (10(-6) M), a selective beta 1-receptor antagonist, shifted the concentration-response curve for isoprenaline to the right, but left the maximal response unchanged. It is concluded that xanthines and beta-receptor agonists have inhibitory actions on circular muscle from the human oesophagogastric junction. The experimental data suggest the presence of beta 1- as well as beta 2-receptors, both mediating inhibition of active resting tension.
