Abstract

The effects of different crumb rubber (CR) contents and their interactions with high temperature ranges on the rheological behavior of asphalt binder were investigated in this study using the response surface methodology (RSM). A temperature sweep test was performed using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) on modified binders with 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15 crumb rubber content at temperatures ranging from 46 °C to 82 °C. RSM statistical analysis was conducted based on central composite design (CCD) and assuming the rheological parameters complex modulus (G*) and phase angle (I´Â°) as response variables. Results from analysis of variance (ANOVA) test indicated that temperature and rubber content affect rheological parameters significantly (p < 0.05). A value of p < 0.0001 indicated a good agreement between the predictions of quadratic models and experimental results with a mean error

Abstract

Background: Thyroid nodules are very common in clinical practice. Although most of thyroid nodules are benign, it is crucial to checkout which nodules are more likely to be malignant. Ultrasound is a major diagnostic tool for screening and evaluating thyroid diseases because it is safe, non-invasive, non-radioactive and effective.Objective: The aim is to identify the role of ultrasound in assessing thyroid nodules and to review various ultrasound criteria predicting malignancy.Patients and methods: A case series study conducted during the period from January 2015 to February 2016 at the First Surgical Unit, Department of Surgery, Baghdad Teaching Hospital by a team of surgeons. One hundred eighty Patients who underwent surgical intervention for nodular thyroid disease were included in the study. The ultrasound features of these patients were analyzed with respect to the number of nodules (solitary or multiple), size, echogenicity, consistency, the presence of calcification, border definition, vascular pattern and whether there was lymphadenopathy and / or local invasion to adjacent structures. The final diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination after surgery. The ultrasound features of thyroid nodules were studied for their correlation with benign and malignant lesions.Results: Among 180 patients with nodular thyroid disease, thyroid malignancy was found in 22 (12.2%) patients. Ultrasound features of thyroid nodules included significant echogenicity, consistency, calcification, border definition, vascular pattern and the presence of local invasion. Ultrasound features suggesting malignant nodules are solid and hypoechoic nodules, ill-defined borders, nodules with local invasion to adjacent structures, the presence of microcalcification and nodules that show increased vascularity on doppler study.Conclusion: Ultrasound is useful in evaluating nodular thyroid disease and is valuable for identifying many malignant and potentially malignant nodules. Despite that, no single ultrasound feature is reliable in making the diagnosis of thyroid malignancy, combining ultrasound suggestive criteria could aid in predicting malignant nature of a given nodule.

Abstract

The cross section of neutrino-induced neutral-current coherent $��^0$ production on a carbon-dominated target is measured in the NOvA near detector. This measurement uses a narrow-band neutrino beam with an average neutrino energy of 2.7\,GeV, which is of interest to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. The measured, flux-averaged cross section is $��= 13.8\pm0.9 (\text{stat})\pm2.3 (\text{syst}) \times 10^{-40}\,\text{cm}^2/\text{nucleus}$, consistent with model prediction. This result is the most precise measurement of neutral-current coherent $��^0$ production in the few-GeV neutrino energy region.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of polypropylene fiber (PPM-12) and nitinol (NiTi) superelastic Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires in concrete beams under flexural repeated loading. For this purpose, nine of simply supported beams with dimensions of (1000 mm length, 80 mm width and 125 mm depth) were considered. Test specimens were divided into three groups (G1, G2 and G3). Specimens in group G2 and G3 were reinforced with different ratios of PPM-12 fiber (0.5%and 0.75%) by volume of concrete and threaded (NiTi) superelastic SMA wires. Group G1 was reinforced with traditional steel rebar and SMA wires without PPM-12 fiber. The results revealed that the addition of PPM-12 fiber to concrete have a negative effect on the mechanical properties of concrete with respect to load carrying capacity in the other side the addition of fiber led to a controlled crack propagation in concrete and increased the fatigue life of concrete. The (NiTi) superelastic threaded wires were active in some specimens in which some displacement recovery was noticed. The importance of study is how to enhance concrete life and reducing crack propagation in concrete by using polypropylene fiber and NiTi wire as reinforcement in concrete.

Abstract

Results are reported from an improved measurement of ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to 6.05×10^{20} protons on target, 33 ν_{e} candidates are observed with a background of 8.2±0.8 (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA ν_{μ} disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on sin^{2}2θ_{13}, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with θ_{23} in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than 93% C.L. for all values of δ_{CP}.

6. Evaluating the Negative Impact of Traffic Congestion on Air Pollution at Signalized Intersection

Abstract

Traffic Congestion is considered as one of the largest contributors to the problem of air pollution at present. A major part of this pollution is due to emissions from vehicles. Intersections are considered as critical elements of road regarding the high level of air pollution which is due to the slow down and stop operations. Thus, the combustion of fuel is increased negatively as intersection compared with other types of road elements. The key focus of this paper is to estimate the negative impact of traffic congestion by calculating the quantities of gases emitted during the traffic congestion at the signaled intersection in Baghdad city. The traffic flow data was obtained by video recording of the study area. From these videos, data was analyzed by using Signalized and Un-signalized Intersection Design and Research Aid (SIDRA 8.0.) software. The selected emissions of HC, CO, NOX, and CO2 in (kg/hr) are based on delay and LOS computation at the signalized intersection. The results of this study will provide suggestions to the transportation and public health officials to reduce the risk of air pollutant by trying different approaches such as eco-routing and eco-signal timing.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract

Results are reported from an improved measurement of $��_��\rightarrow ��_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target 33 $��_e$ candidates were observed with a background of $8.2\pm0.8$ (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA $��_��$ disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on $\sin^22��_{13}$, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with $��_{23}$ in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than $93\%$ C.L. for all values of $��_{CP}$., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($��_{23} = ��/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $��m^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 ��_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $��$ significance., 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The cross section of neutrino-induced neutral-current coherent π0 production on a carbon-dominated target is measured in the NOvA near detector. This measurement uses a narrow-band neutrino beam with an average neutrino energy of 2.7 GeV, which is of interest to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. The measured, flux-averaged cross section is σ=13.8±0.9(stat)±2.3(syst)×10−40 cm2/nucleus, consistent with model prediction. This result is the most precise measurement of neutral-current coherent π0 production in the few-GeV neutrino energy region.
