When driven at a finite rate, close to a charge degeneracy point, the system behaves like a variable capacitor whose magnitude and line-shape varies with temperature. In this experiment, we demonstrate this type of thermometer using a quantum dot in a CMOS nanowire transistor. We drive cyclic electron tunneling by embedding the device in a radio-frequency resonator which in turn allows us to read the thermometer dispersively. We find that the full width at half maximum of the resonator phase response depends linearly with temperature via well known physical law by using the ratio $k_\text{B}/e$ between the Boltzmann constant and the electron charge. Overall, the thermometer shows potential for local probing of fast heat dynamics in nanoelectronic devices and for seamless integration with silicon-based quantum circuits.

We propose a theoretical model based on the paradigmatic central spin model which is in good agreement with experimental observations, and investigate the role of dissipation in the stabilisation of the DTC. Both experiment and theory indicate that the order in this system is primarily a dissipative effect, and which persists in the presence of spin-spin interactions. We present a theoretical phase diagram as a function of interactions and dissipation for the central spin model which is consistent with the experiments. We explore various decoherence mechanisms applicable to the donor electron spin, measuring coherence times up to 700 ms at 1.7 K at X-band, comparable with 28Si:P. Our calculations show that this hybrid structure has the potential to detect magnetic moments with a sensitivity and spatial resolution far beyond that of a simple NV centre, and indeed this may be the physical limit for sensors of this class.

The SIRCIM channel modeling tool is used to create channel profiles for an indoor mobile radio channel. Adaptive arrays and their similarities to linear equalizers are also studied in this thesis. The properties and performance of simple adaptive array systems using the LMS and RLS algorithms are examined through simulation.
