Researchers have found that student engagement has an impact on student learning, retention, motivation, and persistence in higher education. However, faculty often experience challenges in maintaining high levels of student engagement in their classes. Data collected in class during activities, through learner generated reports, and at various points in students' academic careers can provide valuable insight into student engagement. This datum can be used to enhance instructional approaches and curricula to improve student academic gains and interest. Further, universities can use student engagement data to better support vulnerable student populations and improve institutional effectiveness. Because student engagement can have a profound effect on student engagement, this literature review highlights how universities can collect and analyze data to provide targeted instructional practices to augment student performance.

Urban green areas can have a high impact on soil fauna due the environmental changes caused by human activities. This work aimed to assess earthworm populations in urban sites in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Earthworms were sampled in two urban sites: the Campus Ecoville of the Universidade Positivo and the Casa Verde space and in two land use systems (Grass Lawn and Native Vegetation), in the summer of 2018 and 2019 and winter of 2019. A total of 1052 individuals were found, belonging to five families and 12 species were identified, of which five are native: Glossoscolex sp.55, Fimoscolex sp.36, Fimoscolex sp.37 (Glossoscolecidae), Andiorrhinus duseni (Rhinodrilidae) and Ocnerodrilidae sp.43 (Ocnerodrilidae) and seven are exotic species: Amynthas corticis, Amynthas morrisi, Metaphire californica, Metaphire schmardae (Megascolecidae), Dendrodrilus rubidus (Lumbricidae) and Pontoscolex corethrurus (Rhinodrilidae). Of the five native species found, four are new species and will be described in the future and the specie A. duseni belongs to the group known as giant earthworms (minhocuçu) with specimens larger than 30cm. Despite the predominance of exotic species (n=932) compared to native species (n=114), the presence of new species may indicate that the managed environments can preserve native species. Moreover, the difference in the total number (native vs. exotic) can be attributed to the ability of the exotic species to survive human disturbances.

Phenolic acids are recognized as chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agents. Altered glucose and glutamine metabolism are recognized hallmarks of cancer cells. We aimed to test the influence of phenolic acids on glucose and glutamine cellular uptake by a breast (MCF-7) and a pancreatic (AsPC-1) cancer cell line. Several phenolic acids (caffeic, ferrulic, proctocatechuic, coumaric and gallic acid) affected 3H-glutamine and/or 3H-deoxy-d-glucose (3H-DG) uptake. Gallic acid (100 µM) caused a 3-fold increase in 3H-DG uptake by AsPC-1 cells, associated with a 3.7-fold increase in lactic acid production. Gallic acid stimulated GLUT1-mediated 3H-DG uptake and increased the affinity of this transporter for 3H-DG. We further verified that gallic acid does not change GLUT1 transcription rates and cellular redox state and that its effect does not involve PI3K, mTOR and MAP kinases and is not associated with a proproliferative effect. Gallic acid also increased 3H-DG uptake by MCF-7 cells, although less potently. Further investigation is necessary to elucidate the cellular pathways involved in this effect of gallic acid.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic drug used to treat a great variety of solid tumors. Its dose is commonly limited by its nephrotoxicity, manifested as acute kidney injury (AKI). Erythropoietin (Epo) is a glycoprotein hormone that regulates the production of red blood cells. This study was performed to evaluate the presence of endogenous Epo in male Wistar rat urine and to analyse changes in urinary Epo levels in response to cisplatin- induced AKI. Dose-dependent studies and time-dependent experiments were performed to evaluate changes in urea nitrogen and creatinine in plasma as well as Epo, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, creatinine and total proteins in urine at 2 days post-dosing. Rats received 2, 5 or 10 mg/kg b.w., i.p. of cisplatin. At 5 mg/kg b.w., i.p. cisplatin, significant increases in urinary Epo were detected. Significant increases in urea nitrogen and creatinine in plasma, NGAL, AP, proteins, and Epo were observed in urine from rats that received 10 mg/kg b.w., i.p. of cisplatin. In the time-dependent experiments, rats were injected with a dose of 5 mg/kg b.w., i.p. of cisplatin, and sampling occurred 2, 4, and 14 days post-dosing. In these animals, there were significant increases in urea nitrogen and creatinine in plasma and total proteins, AP activity, Epo, and NGAL in urine on day 4. Urinary Epo was also detected on day 2. Taken together, these findings provide weight of evidence for urinary Epo as a promising early biomarker of cisplatin-induced AKI in male rats.

Aims/hypothesis Genome-wide studies have uncovered multiple independent signals at the RREB1 locus associated with altered type 2 diabetes risk and related glycaemic traits. However, little is known about the function of the zinc finger transcription factor Ras-responsive element binding protein 1 (RREB1) in glucose homeostasis or how changes in its expression and/or function influence diabetes risk. Methods A zebrafish model lacking rreb1a and rreb1b was used to study the effect of RREB1 loss in vivo. Using transcriptomic and cellular phenotyping of a human beta cell model (EndoC-βH1) and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived beta-like cells, we investigated how loss of RREB1 expression and activity affects pancreatic endocrine cell development and function. Ex vivo measurements of human islet function were performed in donor islets from carriers of RREB1 type 2 diabetes risk alleles. Results CRISPR/Cas9-mediated loss of rreb1a and rreb1b function in zebrafish supports an in vivo role for the transcription factor in beta cell mass, beta cell insulin expression and glucose levels. Loss of RREB1 also reduced insulin gene expression and cellular insulin content in EndoC-βH1 cells and impaired insulin secretion under prolonged stimulation. Transcriptomic analysis of RREB1 knockdown and knockout EndoC-βH1 cells supports RREB1 as a novel regulator of genes involved in insulin secretion. In vitro differentiation of RREB1KO/KO hiPSCs revealed dysregulation of pro-endocrine cell genes, including RFX family members, suggesting that RREB1 also regulates genes involved in endocrine cell development. Human donor islets from carriers of type 2 diabetes risk alleles in RREB1 have altered glucose-stimulated insulin secretion ex vivo, consistent with a role for RREB1 in regulating islet cell function. Conclusions/interpretation Together, our results indicate that RREB1 regulates beta cell function by transcriptionally regulating the expression of genes involved in beta cell development and function. Newly generated immature B cells that bind self-antigen with high avidity arrest in differentiation and undergo central tolerance via receptor editing and clonal deletion. These autoreactive immature B cells also express low surface levels of the coreceptor CD19, a key activator of the PI3K pathway. Signals emanating from both CD19 and PI3K are known to be critical for attenuating receptor editing and selecting immature B cells into the periphery. However, the mechanisms that modulate CD19 expression at this stage of B cell development have not yet been resolved. Using in vivo and in vitro models, we demonstrate that Cd19 de novo gene transcription and translation do not significantly contribute to the differences in CD19 surface expression in mouse autoreactive and nonautoreactive immature B cells. Instead, CD19 downregulation is induced by BCR stimulation in proportion to BCR engagement, and the remaining surface IgM and CD19 molecules promote intracellular PI3K-AKT activity in proportion to their level of expression. The internalized CD19 is degraded with IgM by the lysosome, but inhibiting lysosome-mediated protein degradation only slightly improves surface CD19. In fact, CD19 is restored only upon Ag removal. Our data also reveal that the PI3K-AKT pathway positively modulates CD19 surface expression in immature B cells via a mechanism that is independent of inhibition of FOXO1 and its role on Cd19 gene transcription while is dependent on mTORC1.

A literatura, como outras produções culturais, não são facilmente encontradas na vida de quem vive na periferia, devido aos poucos equipamentos culturais e bibliotecas públicas, nos territórios periféricos. A colonização se faz presente nas regras da política, na segregação socioespacial e no direito à cidade. O racismo e o machismo se apresentam todos os dias na periferia. Mas os periféricos começaram a contar suas histórias, através das mulheres, dos jovens, nas músicas, nos slams, nas roda de rima e no texto literário. All larval instars of the burrowing water beetle species Hydrocanthus debilis Sharp, 1882 are described and illustrated, including morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphus. Larvae of this species have many small dark dorsal maculae on the body, which easily distinguishes it from other known species of the genus except H. socius Sahlberg, 1884. Larvae of H. debilis can easily be separated from those of H. socius by their smaller size, the length of parietal seta PA13 relative to seta PA14, and the relative distance between egg bursters.

Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is an anaesthetic agent that mimics natural deep sleep and produces minimal cardiorespiratory depression. As such, it is a very valuable option in the management of such a challenging population as paediatric patients. The main objective of this mini review was to evaluate the role of DEX as a perioperative analgesic in children receiving anaesthesia. We searched Google, Pubmed, Embase and the Cochrane Library for articles published between 2010 and 2021, and reviewed various of aspects of DEX, such as pharmacology, effectiveness, safety, and the most recent evidence on its clinical use as an analgesic in paediatric anaesthesia. We also include a cost estimate of perioperative analgesia with DEX.

There has been a decrease in sperm concentration in recent years. Concurrently, there were important dietary changes, including an increase in sugar-sweetened beverage intake (SSB). The relation between SSB and male reproduction functions in humans are barely described in the literature.Cross-sectional study with 209 participants (18-23 years old) recruited during one year in Murcia, Spain. All men provided semen and blood samples the same day. SSB consumption was evaluated using a 101-item validated food frequency questionnaire. Reproductive hormones were analysed from serum samples, obtaining levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, inhibin B, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, and testosterone. The evaluation of semen analysis followed the WHO guidelines and consisted of seminal volume, sperm concentration, total sperm count, percentage of morphologically normal sperm, and percentage of motile sperm. SSB intake association with semen parameters and hormone levels were examined using multiple linear regression.Men in the highest quartile of the SSB intake had a higher percentage of morphologically normal sperm, 37.4% [6.1, 68.3] (p, trend=0.047) and higher estradiol levels (9.5% [-3.5, 22.5] (p, trend=0.047) than those in the first quartile. SSB intake was unrelated to other semen quality parameters or reproductive hormone levels.Our results indicate that sperm morphology and estradiol levels may be associated with sugar-sweetened beverage intake. These findings might be explained by physiological metabolism homeostasis, though more studies are required to confirm these results and draw conclusions in other male populations.

En este trabajo se presenta la influencia de la potencia en el depósito por sputtering en la morfología de películas delgadasde óxidos de molibdeno. Las películas fueron depositadas variando la potencia de depósito en 10, 20, 30, 40 y 50 W, endonde los espesores de las películas fueron de 46, 72, 218, 222 y 226 nm respectivamente. Las películas de óxido demolibdeno tienen una contribución de diferentes fases de los óxidos de molibdeno como MoO2 (tetragonal yortorrómbica), MoO3 (ortorrómbica) y el Mo30 (cúbica). La variación en la potencia de depósito permite el crecimientopreferencial de ciertos planos cristalinos de los óxidos de molibdeno. Las películas a bajas potencias presentaron unasuperficie homogénea con la aparición de algunos precipitados. Mientras que las películas depositadas con una potenciamayor presentaron una morfología en forma de barras orientadas en diferentes direcciones. El índice de refracción de laspelículas con una morfología de barras es mayor que el índice de refracción de las películas depositadas a una menorpotencia. Lo que confirma que el paso de la luz a través de la superficie es mucho mas lento para las películas depositadasa potencias mayores de 30 W que para las películas depositadas a 10 y 20 W.

Contaminated shoes are a potential vector for dissemination of healthcare-associated pathogens. We demonstrated that healthcare personnel walking into patient rooms frequently transferred pathogens from their shoes to the floor. An 8-second treatment of shoes with a UV-C decontamination device significantly reduced the frequency of transfer of vegetative bacterial pathogens.

PurposeSmart tourist destinations (STDs) make use of new technologies to facilitate and improve the experience of tourists. So why not use these technologies to efficiently manage the destination? The aim of this work is to define and implement a methodology that provides value to STDs by defining their most important characteristics to monitor and quantify them automatically in real time.Design/methodology/approachThe authors developed a conceptual framework to the smart tourism approach presented in previous studies, the latest technologies and the application of the smart tourism system (STS). Based on the focus group method with stakeholders from the tourism industry of the Spanish tourist municipality of Puerto de la Cruz, they defined the main KPIs for a municipal STD. Likewise, the authors specified the necessary technologies to obtain, manage and represent the data, and the method for quantifying the quality of the STD by using the AHP method. Lastly, they implemented the framework for the aforementioned municipality.FindingsThe implementation in a real context of the STS proposed for Puerto de la Cruz demonstrates its validity and the possibility of adapting it to any other municipal destination. In addition, the authors corroborate how this STS improves on other versions.Originality/valueThis paper provides a theoretical methodology to improve STD management and implements it. Other studies have focused only on the theoretical aspect. Moreover, automated management tools are emerging for STDs, but they lack the quality provided by the scientific approach employed herein.

A growing body of research suggests that adult child educational attainment benefits older parents’ cognitive outcomes via financial (e.g., direct monetary transfers) and nonfinancial (e.g., psychosocial) mechanisms. Quasi-experimental studies are needed to circumvent confounding bias. No such quasi-experimental studies have been completed in higher-income countries, where financial transfers from adult children to aging parents are rare. Using data on 8,159 adults aged ≥50 years in the Survey for Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (2004/2005), we leveraged changes in compulsory schooling laws as quasi-experiments. Each year of increased schooling among respondents’ oldest children was associated with better verbal fluency (β = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.12) scores; overall associations with verbal memory scores were null, with mixed and imprecise evidence of association in models stratified by parent gender. We also evaluated associations with psychosocial outcomes as potentially important mechanisms. Increased schooling among respondents’ oldest children was associated with higher quality-of-life scores and fewer depressive symptoms. Our findings present modest albeit inconsistent evidence that increases in schooling may have an “upward” influence on older parents’ cognitive performance even in settings where financial transfers from adult children to their parents are uncommon. Associations with parents’ psychosocial outcomes were more robust.

En este escrito elaboramos una valoración crítica del conjunto de artículos vinculados a la Psicología del Trabajo y las Organizaciones (PTO), publicados en la Revista Puertorriqueña de Psicología (reps) durante sus 40 años de existencia. Esta valoración integra el análisis documental de 44 artículos con temáticas de la PTO, identificados de la lista provista por el equipo editor internacional de la reps. Para la valoración crítica realizamos un análisis de contenido con información cualitativa y cuantitativa de tres categorías generales y las subcategorías correspondientes. Mediante un análisis matricial evaluamos las categorías generales de: 1) caracterización de las autorías y de los artículos, 2) aproximaciones metodológicas y 3) aportaciones al campo de la PTO. Utilizamos el programado Atlas T.I V8, que permitió ilustrar un análisis de frecuencias y coocurrencias de las categorías y subcategorías. En el artículo integramos los resultados, la discusión y además presentamos conclusiones, limitaciones y recomendaciones. Incluimos recomendaciones para continuar el desarrollo de la PTO en la reps desde una diversidad de acercamientos teóricos y metodológicos.

Although human trafficking is recognized as a public health issue, research on the health effects of human trafficking and best intervention practices is limited. We describe 2 citywide collaborative victim services models, the THRIVE (Trafficking, Healthcare, Resources, and Interdisciplinary Victim Services and Education) Clinic at the University of Miami and Jackson Health System in Miami, Florida, and the Greater Houston Area Pathways for Advocacy-based, Trauma-Informed Healthcare (PATH) Collaborative at Baylor College of Medicine, CommonSpirit Health, and San Jose Clinic in Houston, Texas, funded in part by the Office for Victims of Crime, which focus on trauma-informed health care delivery for victims of human trafficking. From June 2015 through September 2021, the THRIVE Clinic served 214 patients with an average age of 28.7 years at the time of their first visit. From October 2017 through September 2021, the PATH Collaborative received 560 suspected trafficking referrals, 400 of which screened positive for labor or sex trafficking. These models serve as a framework for replication of interdisciplinary practices to provide health care for this unique population and preliminary information about the strategies put in place to assist victims during their recovery. Key lessons include the importance of a citywide needs assessment, patient navigators, interdisciplinary care, and building community partnerships to ensure safe housing, transportation, identification, health insurance, vocation services, input from survivors, peer-to-peer mentorship, and medical–legal services. Further research is needed to understand the detrimental health effects of trafficking and the health care needs of victims. In addition, a need exists to develop optimal models of care for recovery and reintegration for this patient population and to address public health, legal, and medical policies to ensure access to and sustainability of comprehensive, trauma-informed, interdisciplinary victim services.

Diagnostic and decision-making processes in the 2019 Coronavirus treatment have combined new standards using patient chest images, clinical and laboratory data. This work presents a systematic review aimed at studying the Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to the patients’ diagnosis or evolution with Coronavirus 2019. Five electronic databases were searched, from December 2019 to October 2020, considering the beginning of the pandemic when there was no vaccine influencing the exploration of Artificial Intelligence-based techniques. The first search collected 839 papers. Next, the abstracts were reviewed, and 138 remained after the inclusion/exclusion criteria was performed. After thorough reading and review by a second group of reviewers, 64 met the study objectives. These papers were carefully analyzed to identify the AI techniques used to interpret the images, clinical and laboratory data, considering a distribution regarding two variables: (i) diagnosis or outcome and (ii) the type of data: clinical, laboratory, or imaging (chest computed tomography, chest X-ray, or ultrasound). The data type most used was chest CT scans, followed by chest X-ray. The chest CT scan was the only data type that was used for diagnosis, outcome, or both. A few works combine Clinical and Laboratory data, and the most used laboratory tests were C-reactive protein. AI techniques have been increasingly explored in medical image annotation to overcome the need for specialized manual work. In this context, 25 machine learning (ML) techniques with a highest frequency of usage were identified, ranging from the most classic ones, such as Logistic Regression, to the most current ones, such as those that explore Deep Learning. Most imaging works explored convolutional neural networks (CNN), such as VGG and Resnet. Then transfer learning which stands out among the techniques related to deep learning has the second highest frequency of use. In general, classification tasks adopted two or three datasets. COVID-19 related data is present in all papers, while pneumonia is the most common non-COVID-19 class among them.

ObjectiveDespite some progress in recent years, colorectal cancer (CRC) screening adherence in the United States is still suboptimal, particularly among disadvantaged groups. In this study, we assessed the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and self-reported screening non-adherence (SNA) in a sample of racial/ethnic minorities living in San Francisco, California.Design/methodsA total of 376 participants of the San Francisco version of the Health Information National Trends Survey (SF-HINTS) with ages 50-75 years were included in this cross-sectional study. SNA was defined as not reporting blood stool test within the past year and not reporting sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy within the past 10 years. Poisson regression models with robust variance estimators were used to evaluate the relation of SES with SNA, adjusting for measured confounders. Results are reported as prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).ResultsOverall SNA was 40%. In multivariable models including all respondents, retired participants had significantly lower SNA prevalence than employed participants (PR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.26 0.83). In stratified analyses by race/ethnicity, Black respondents with less than high school (PR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.09, 3.43) and those with high school or equivalent (PR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.16, 3.04) had significantly higher SNA prevalence than those with at least some college. Among non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islanders, those disabled had significantly higher prevalence of SNA as compared to employed people (PR = 4.26, 95% CI = 2.11, 8.60). None of the SES indicators were significantly associated to SNA among Hispanics.ConclusionsParticipants with lower SES characteristics were less likely to adhere to CRC screening guidelines and being retired was a predictor of compliance. There was evidence of heterogeneity in associations between SES and CRC screening by race/ethnicity. Life circumstances of retired people could provide insights for designing interventions aimed to improve CRC screening uptake in these priority groups. Future efforts should consider mechanisms underlying differences by race/ethnicity.

The growing body of evidence linking intergenerational education and late-life cognitive decline is almost exclusively from high-income countries, despite rapid intergenerational changes in education in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We used data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (n = 8,822), a cohort of Mexican adults aged > 50 years (2001- 2018) to evaluate whether parental (none vs. any formal schooling), own (< primary school vs. primary completion), or adult child (< high school vs. high school completion) education was associated with verbal memory z-scores. We used linear mixed models with inverse probability of attrition weights. Educational attainment in all three generations was associated with baseline verbal memory scores, independent of the prior generation’s education. Lower parental (ß= -0.005; 95% CI: -0.009, -0.002) and respondents’ education (ß= -0.013; 95% CI: -0.017, -0.010) were associated with faster decline in delayed (not immediate) verbal memory z-scores. Associations between adult child education and respondent’s verbal memory decline varied by exposure specification. Educational attainment of parents and adult children may influence the cognitive aging of middle-aged and older adults in LMICs. These results have important implications given recent structural shifts in educational attainment in many LMICs.

BackgroundCardiovascular health optimization during middle age benefits brain health. The American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 recently added sleep duration as a key determinant of cardiovascular health becoming the Life’s Essential 8. We tested the hypothesis that suboptimal sleep duration is associated with poorer neuroimaging brain health profiles in asymptomatic middle-aged adults.MethodsWe conducted a prospective MRI neuroimaging study in middle-aged persons without stroke, dementia, or multiple sclerosis enrolled in the UK Biobank. Self-reported sleep duration was categorized as short (ResultsWe evaluated 39,502 middle-aged persons (mean age 55, 53% female). Of these, 28,712 (72.7%) had optimal, 8,422 (21.3%) short, and 2,368 (6%) long sleep. Compared to optimal sleep, short sleep was associated with higher risk (OR 1.11; 95% CI 1.05-1.17; P0.05) of white matter hyperintensities. Short (beta=0.03, SE=0.01; P=0.004) and long sleep (beta=0.07, SE=0.02; PConclusionsAmong middle-aged adults without clinically observed neurological disease, suboptimal sleep duration is associated with poorer neuroimaging brain health profiles. Because the evaluated neuroimaging markers precede stroke and dementia by several years, our findings support early interventions aimed at correcting this modifiable risk factor.

This study investigated the feathers’ composition of South polar skua (Stercorarius maccormicki) using WDXRF, evaluating the concentration of essential and non-essential elements in the feathers, and dividing it into rachis and barb parts. We collected South polar skuas feathers from Hennequin Point, King George Island, South Shetland, Antarctic Peninsula in January of 2013. Our results show that 18 elements were observed in the composition of the feathers, with a different concentration between the rachis and barbs, qualitatively and quantitatively. Only 3 elements observed were classified as non-essentials but still mostly elements do not have a function described in the literature to the feathers. According to our knowledge, this is the first study that uses this technique to evaluate the concentration of different elements in the feathers. The findings of this study highlight the use of alternative techniques to biomonitoring elements in the ecosystem and bring baseline information for future studies.
