Analysing preliminary results of percutaneous radiotherapy on 79 patients with localized prostatic carcinoma, the uncorrected five-year survival rate of all patients was 67.3%, that in stage O, A and B 89.5% and that of patients in stage C and D 64.5%. The tumour-free five-year survival rate of all patients was 50.2%. In three patients there was a recurrence (4%), in four others severe side-effects (5%). There were no fatal complications. Radiotherapy can be considered to be an alternative to operation even when the tumour is limited to the prostate.

66 cases of pectoralis-hand defect are analyzed and the literature is reviewed. There is a high degree of variability of hand and arm malformations ranging from minor brachydactyly to peromelia. Genetic causes do not appear to be important for the majority of cases.

An epidemiological analysis of Staphylococcus aureus was conducted in a study group of 157 cystic fibrosis patients cultured over a 30-month period. The resulting S. aureus isolates were categorized by bacteriophage type, plasmid profile, and (in some instances) chromosomal restriction fragment pattern of the culture-positive patients with S. aureus (34 of 157) 44% only were sporadically infected while 68% shared identical strains with one or more other patients. Six patients exhibited persistent infection (for up to ten months) which, in three individuals, occurred as cycles of carriage and reappearance. By contributing toward our understanding of the persistence and spread of S. aureus in cystic fibrosis patients these data should aid in clarifying the role this organism may play in the course of the disease.

This article deals with the use of 56 silastic-catheters in the intensive care of premature and new-born with mean weights of 1550 g according to the Shaw-method. The clinical use with regard to early and late complications was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy of 11 catheters. The results were compared with the complications associated with PVC-catheters. The silastic-catheters has the following advantages: over a longer period it does not lose its mechanical properties, it is athrombogenic and has only few complications regarding infection and thrombosis. Local reactions cannot, however be eliminated. We can extend the use of silastic-catheters by giving blood, drugs and by taking blood samples, by this way intensive care of the new-born is less stressful.

Mesomelic dwarfism of the Langer type is described. This is characterised by shortening and bending of the middle portions of the extremities. This is compared with three cases of "mesomelic" changes in the forearm. The classification of this condition is discussed.

In the examinations presented the gastric wall blood-flow of the dog was measured scintigraphically by using the gamma camera and quantitatively by making use of the microsphere method under different functional conditions. In doing so it became apparent that not only the individual functional stomach regions (corpus-antrum) but as well the individual stomach wall layers (mucosa-muscularis) can show a counter blood flow procedure. The two methods mentioned above have proved to be suitable both for the determination of the gastric wall blood flow in the individual layers and the optical reproduction of the regional blood-flow procedure.

Campomelia is a clearcut syndrome showing angulation of femora and tibiae, hypoplastic fibulae, short distal phalanges of the fingers, and cleft palate. The cause is unknown. Familial occurrence has been observed but less often than expected on the basis of autosomal recessive inheritance. There is an apparent excess of cases in females, but female patients may have a male 46, XY caryotype. HY-antigen is lacking in these cases.
