We present a new set of synthesis models for stellar populations obtained with Starburst99 which are based on new stellar evolutionary tracks with rotation. We discuss models with zero rotation velocity and with velocities of 40 of the break up velocity on the zero age main sequence. These values are expected to bracket realistic rotation velocity distributions in stellar populations. The new rotating models for massive stars are more luminous and hotter due to a larger convective core and enhanced surface abundances. This results in pronounced changes in the integrated spectral energy distribution of a population containing massive stars. The changes are most significant at the shortest wavelengths where an increase of the ionizing luminosity by up to a factor of 5 is predicted. We also show that high equivalent widths of recombination lines may not necessarily indicate a very young age but can be achieved at ages as late as 10 Myr. Comparison of these two boundary cases (0 and 40 of the break up velocity) will allow users to evaluate the effects of rotation and provide guidance for calibrating the stellar evolution models. We also introduce a new theoretical ultraviolet spectral library built from the Potsdam Wolf Rayet (PoWR) atmospheres. Its purpose is to help identify signatures of Wolf Rayet stars in the ultraviolet whose strength is sensitive to the particulars of the evolution models. The new models are available for solar and 1/7th solar metallicities. A complete suite of models can be generated on the Starburst99 website (www.stsci.edu/science/starburst99/). The updated Starburst99 package can be retrieved from this website as well.

We present initial results and source lists of variable sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for which we detect thermal infrared variability from the SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey, which had 2 epochs of photometry separated by three months. The SAGE survey mapped a 7 degree by 7 degree region of the LMC using the IRAC and the MIPS instruments on board Spitzer. Variable sources are identified using a combination of the IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 \micron bands and the MIPS 24 \micron bands. An error-weighted flux difference between the two epochs is used to assess the variability. Of the ~ 3 million sources detected at both epochs we find ~ 2,000 variable sources for which we provide electronic catalogs. Most of the variable sources can be classified as asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. A large fraction (> 66%) of the extreme AGB stars are variable and only smaller fractions of carbon-rich (6.1%) and oxygen-rich (2.0%) stars are detected as variable. We review the history and the current status of the understanding of the processes that regulate Lyman alpha emission from star-forming galaxies. We present some of the most recent results of our study to image local starburst galaxies in the Lyman alpha emission line using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Particular attention is dedicated to our study of the low-metallicity, dust-poor Blue Compact Galaxy ESO338-IG04. The determination of the metal abundances in the neutral interstellar medium of dwarf star-forming galaxies is a key step in understanding their physical and chemical evolution. This type of investigation has been possible in the last 5 years thanks to FUSE. We will give a flavor of the issues involved by presenting the work that we are performing in this astrophysical field., Comment: 3 pages. We review the imaging and spectroscopic properties of the Lyman alpha emission in starburst galaxies. The Lyman alpha photons escape is largely driven by kinematical and orientation effects related to the presence of large scale expanding shells of neutral hydrogen. The various Lyman alpha profiles can be linked to the evolutionary state of the starburst. Our recent Lyman alpha imaging study using the HST-ACS is presented here: it highlights the presence of diffuse extended emission of low intensity leaking out the diffuse HI components. We present high resolution VLT spectra of 2 submm-detected galaxies. Diagnostic stellar absorption lines (Starburst99) are used to analyse their stellar population. SMM J14011+0252 (z=2.565) shows signs of starburst and SMM J02399-0136 (z=2.808) shows signs of starburst and AGN. A MgII line at z~0.94 is identified in the latter galaxy and could account for an extra magnification factor in this SCUBA source., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, in "The Evolution of Galaxies.II. We report the results of a spectroscopic investigation of a sample of 20 of the brightest type 2 Seyfert nuclei. Our goal is to search for the direct spectroscopic signature of massive stars, and thereby probe the role of circumnuclear starbursts in the Seyfert phenomenon. The method used is based on the detection of the higher order Balmer lines and HeI lines in absorption and the Wolf-Rayet feature at $\sim$4680 \AA in emission. These lines are strong indicators of the presence of young (a few Myrs) and intermediate-age (a few 100 Myrs) stellar populations. In over half the sample, we have detected HeI and/or strong stellar absorption features in the high-order (near-UV) Balmer series together with relatively weak lines from an old stellar population. In three others we detect a broad emission feature near 4680 \AA that is most plausibly ascribed to a population of Wolf-Rayet stars (the evolved descendants of the most massive stars). We therefore conclude that the blue and near-UV light of over half of the sample is dominated by young and/or intermediate age stars. The ``young'' Seyfert 2's have have larger far-IR luminosities, cooler mid/far-IR colors, and smaller [OIII]/H$\beta$ flux ratios than the ``old'' ones. These differences are consistent with a starburst playing a significant energetic role in the former class. We consider the possibility that there may be two distinct sub-classes of Seyfert 2 nuclei (``starbursts'' and ``hidden BLR''). However, the fact that hidden BLRs have been found in three of the ``young'' nuclei argues against this, and suggests that nuclear starbursts may be a more general part of the Seyfert phenomenon., Comment: To be published in ApJ, 546, Jan 10, 2001

The interplay between the ISM and the massive stars formed in clusters and, more generally, in recent events of star formation is reviewed via the global effects each has on the other. The pre-existing environment affects the properties of the massive stars, the duration of the star-forming event and could potentially affect the IMF. The collective effect of massive-star winds and supernova explosions creates a structured ISM by forming bubbles, supershells and, in more extreme cases, by inducing large-scale gas outflows. Gas/dust removal may quench star formation in young stellar clusters. Conversely, supernova-driven shocks may trigger star formation in molecular clouds surrounding the stellar clusters. Metal ejection from the massive stars is responsible for the pollution of the ISM and, if the metal-rich gas can escape the galaxy's gravitational potential, of the IGM. The environment where stellar clusters form is populated by a diffuse stellar population which contributes between 50% and 80% of the total UV light. Thanks to their proximity, local starbursts are perfectly suited for high-resolution and sensitivity multiwavelength observations aimed to test our ideas about star formation, evolution of massive stars, physics and chemical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). High-resolution UV spectroscopy with FUSE and STIS has recently given the possibility to characterize in great detail the neutral ISM in local starbursts thanks to the presence in this spectral range of many absorption lines from ions of the most common heavy elements. Here we present the results for two nearby starburst galaxies, I Zw 18 and NGC 1705, and show how these results relate to the star-formation history and evolutionary state of these stellar systems., Comment: 4 pages; to appear in the Proceedings of the Conference "Starbursts - From 30 Doradus to Lyman Break Galaxies", eds.
