2. Data for 'Pattern Forming Systems Coupling Linear Bulk Diffusion to Dynamically Active Membranes or Cells'

Abstract

Some analytical and numerical results are presented for pattern formation properties associated with novel types of reaction–diffusion (RD) systems that involve the coupling of bulk diffusion in the interior of a multi-dimensional spatial domain to nonlinear processes that occur either on the domain boundary or within localized compartments that are confined within the domain. The class of bulk-membrane system considered herein is derived from an asymptotic analysis in the limit of small thickness of a thin domain that surrounds the bulk medium. When the bulk domain is a two-dimensional disk, a weakly nonlinear analysis is used to characterize Turing and Hopf bifurcations that can arise from the linearization around a radially symmetric, but spatially non-uniform, steady-state of the bulk-membrane system. In a singularly perturbed limit, the existence and linear stability of localized membrane-bound spike patterns is analysed for a Gierer–Meinhardt activator-inhibitor model that includes bulk coupling. Finally, the emergence of collective intracellular oscillations is studied for a class of PDE-ODE bulk-cell model in a bounded two-dimensional domain that contains spatially localized, but dynamically active, circular cells that are coupled through a linear bulk diffusion field. Applications of such coupled bulk-membrane or bulk-cell systems to some biological systems are outlined, and some open problems in this area are discussed.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Recent progress and open frontiers in Turing’s theory of morphogenesis’.

Abstract

Background and aims: The association between adiposity measures and dyslipidemia has seldom been assessed in a multipopulational setting. Methods and results: 27 populations from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (WHO MONICA project) using health surveys conducted between 1990 and 1997 in adults aged 35-64 years (n = 40,480). Dyslipidemia was defined as the total/HDL cholesterol ratio >6 (men) and >5 (women).Overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 25% in men and 23% in women. Logistic regression showed that dyslipidemia was strongly associated with body mass index (BMI) in men and with waist circumference (WC) in women, after adjusting for region, age and smoking. Among normal-weight men and women (BMI84.8 cm) in normal-weight men, menopause in women and regular smoking further defined subgroups at increased risk. Conclusion: standard categories of BMI and WC, or their combinations, do not lead to optimal risk stratification for dyslipidemia in middle-age adults. Sex-specific adaptations are necessary, in particular by taking into account abdominal obesity in normal-weight men, post-menopausal age in women and regular smoking in both sexes

Abstract

The absolute calibration of an air fluorescence detector (FD) is an important element in correctly determining the energy of detected cosmic rays. The absolute calibration relates the flux of photons of a given wavelength at the detector aperture to the electronic signal recorded by the FD data acquisition system. For the Auger FDs, the primary absolute calibration method uses a diffusive surface which is placed in front of a telescope aperture to uniformly illuminate the telescope field of view with a known light signal. This single-wavelength measurement (375 nm) will be made at intervals of several months until the stability of the telescopes is determined. The relative wavelength dependence of the calibration is determined through independent measurements. The error in absolute calibration at a single wavelength is estimated to be less than 10%. Two other absolute calibration methods are used to provide an independent verification of the primary measurement. The stability of the calibration with time is monitored nightly by a relative calibration system. In this paper we will provide descriptions of the absolute and relative calibration methods used by the Auger air fluorescence observatory. Abstract

Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire constituent une contribution à un domaine de la maintenance corrective des dispositifs techniques : le diagnostic et plus précisément la localisation des pannes. Ces travaux se sont basés sur la mise en ?uvre du diagnostic d'une application réelle, la TVM 430, c'est à dire le système d'espacement et de signalisation en cabine des TGV. Tout en restant proche des problèmes soulevés par cette application, nous avons essayé de proposer une démarche générique applicable à d'autres types de dispositifs techniques. Nous avons opté pour le choix du diagnostic à base de modèle car il est bien adapté aux systèmes sur lesquels peu d'expertise est disponible. De plus la connaissance propre au dispositif est concentrée dans des modèles qui peuvent être crées à partir des seuls documents de conception. Les trois modèles structurel, comportemental et fonctionnel que nous avons utilisés pour contenir la connaissance sur le dispositif ont été choisis en fonction de leur utilisation, le diagnostic, et en fonction des informations disponibles à partir des données de conception. Par conséquent, chaque modèle correspond à un niveau épistémologique et à fait ses preuves dans la littérature dédiée au diagnostic. La démarche utilisée pour créer les trois modèles est issue du génie logiciel (tests unitaires, tests d'intégration, non-régression des modifications) pour diminuer la difficulté de la phase de déverminage. Cette phase de déverminage des modèles est entreprise de manière originale en adaptant la théorie du diagnostic sur des scénarios de panne. Ceux-ci fournissent les candidats que l'on doit obtenir. On ne pose donc plus des hypothèses sur le bon fonctionnement de ces composants mais sur des hypothèses de correction/complétude des observations ou des hypothèses de correction/complétude sur les modèles.

Abstract

The surface detector (SD) array of the southern Pierre Auger Observatory will consist of a triangular grid of 1600 water Cherenkov tanks with 1.5 km spacing. For zenith angles less than 60deg the primary energy can be estimated from the signal S(1000) at a distance of about 1000m from the shower axis, solely on basis of SD data. A suitable lateral distribution function (LDF) S(r) is fitted to the signals recorded by the water tanks and used to quantify S(1000). Therefore, knowledge of the LDF is a fundamental requirement for determining the energy of the primary particle. The Engineering Array (EA), a prototype facility consisting of 32 tanks, has taken data continuously since late 2001. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to elucidate the origin and nature of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays using a hybrid detection technique. A first run of data taking with a prototype version of both detectors (the so called Engineering Array) took place in 2001-2002, allowing the Collaboration to evaluate the performance of the two detector systems and to approach an analysis strategy. In this contribution, after a brief description of the system, we will report some results on the behavior of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) Prototype. Performance studies, such as measurements of noise, sensitivity and duty cycle, will be presented. We will illustrate a preliminary analysis of selected air showers. Abstract

The eel population of the Camargue lagoon system can be divided into two subunits living in two distinct biotopes (freshwater and brackish water) and characterised by different population structures and especially growth patterns. The sub-population living in the Fumemorte canal (average salinity: 0.9 g/l) is a freshwater population type (81.6% females, maximum ages observed = 9 - 11 years, slow growth (annual gain 46 mm)) whereas that of the Vaccarès lagoon (average salinity: 9.7 g/l over the same period) is typical of a lagoon (45.6% females, maximum ages 5 – 6 years, fast growth (annual gain 90 mm)). In each sub-population, Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and OI (Ocular Index) were measured on female eels over a sampling period that started in January 1997 and ended in December 2000. In both types of habitat, and in agreement with previous studies, we observed a threshold value of GSI ≥ 1.4 % characterising the silver stage (MARCHELIDON et al., 1999). The increase in eye area was a progressive phenomenon, initiated in the yellow stage and was significantly correlated (p < 0.001) with the GSI. As with the GSI, OI increased in silver eels, the threshold value of ≥ 8.0 discriminating silver eels. We will show that silvering follows different patterns between the two habitats. Age at metamorphosis in female eels take place very early in the Vaccarès lagoon (83.3% of females metamorphose between 4 and 5 years) compared to those in the Fumemorte drainage canal (94% of females metamorphose between 7 and 9 years). We suggest that the growth potential provided by Vaccarès lagoon accounts for this difference in age at metamorphosis. Although, such a turnover cannot explain alone the different proportions of female silver eels observed in the Fumemorte drainage canal (23%) and Vaccarès lagoon (2.4%). Influence of population’s parameters like sex-ratio, population structure and abundance on silvering process, is discussed.

Abstract

The detectors of the surface array of the Pierre Auger Observatory are water Cherenkov tanks. The signals from each tank are read out using three photomultipliers. The energy of the primary particle is inferred from signal densities and requires good linearity of the PMTs and a large dynamic range. The absolute time of arrival of the shower front at each tank is obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS) with a resolution of about 10 ns, ensuring an accurate primary angular reconstruction. Additionally, it is intended to use the rise time and shape of the signals to constrain the nature of the primary particle: this sets further requirements on the signal processing. Abstract

With the increasing popularity of trail running comes the growing interest for related performance optimization and injury prevention as new fields ofresearch. Particularly, the relationship between stability and muscle forces is of interest, due to injury risks (Besier et al., 2009). Kinematics and kineticsanalysis combined with musculoskeletal modelling allows direct and indirect quantification of human locomotion. The aim of this laboratory study was toinvestigate changes in kinematics, kinetics, and muscle forces when running on uneven surface.

Abstract

In the past decade, high frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) has significantly developed as a reliable, effective and user-friendly method for post-weld fatigue strength improvement technique for welded structures. This paper presents a proposed fatigue design and assessment guideline for HFMI improved welded joints. Stress analysis methods based on nominal stress, structural hot spot stress and effective notch stress are discussed. The document especially considers the observed extra benefit that has been experimentally observed for HFMI treated high strength steels. The proposal is considered to apply to steel structures from plate thickness 5 to 50 mm and for yield strengths ranging from 235 MPa to 960 MPa. Several fatigue assessment examples are also provided. Lessons learned concerning appropriate HFMI procedures and quality assurance measures are presented. Due to differences in the HFMI tools and the wide variety of potential applications, certain details of a proper treatment procedures and quantitative quality control measures are presented generally. It is proposed that specific details should be documented in a HFMI Procedure Specification for each structure being treated. It is hoped that this guideline proposal will provide a stimulus to researchers working in the field. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
