Het is nog grotendeels onbekend hoe jongeren daarop reageren en welke gedragingen veranderen. We hebben een cohortvergelijking gemaakt van derdeklassers (N = 177, Mleeftijd = 15,00) van de middelbare school vóór de coronacrisis (voorjaar 2019) met een qua demografische kenmerken vergelijkbare groep derdeklassers (N = 188, Mleeftijd = 14,95) tijdens de eerste lockdown (voorjaar 2020). We vergeleken de domeinen eetgedrag, leefstijl en sociaal-emotionele gezondheid tussen beide cohorten en keken naar de samenhang binnen en tussen domeinen voor beide cohorten. De consumptie van zoete snacks thuis, alcoholgebruik en eenzaamheid waren in het coronacohort hoger dan vóór de coronacrisis (niet significant na correctie). De consumptie van fruit thuis, van suikerhoudende dranken en ongezonde snacks buitenshuis, en matige en zware fysieke activiteit kwamen minder voor tijdens de lockdown. Relatietevredenheid met ouders, geluksgevoel en stress door school waren lager vergeleken met het cohort vóór de lockdown. Roken, stress thuis en relatietevredenheid met beste vriend(in) waren in beide cohorten even hoog. Het patroon van samenhang binnen en tussen de domeinen verschilde. Verder onderzoek moet uitwijzen hoe veerkrachtig jongeren op de langere termijn zijn en welke jongeren ondersteuning nodig hebben om terug te veren. 9 p.

Contains fulltext : 292951.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) The current prospective study examined whether both self-esteem and negative affectivity mediate subsequent associations between interpersonal peer problems (i.e., peer victimization, peer rejection, lack of friendships) and disordered eating behaviors (i.e., loss of control while overeating, emotional eating, restrained eating) in adolescents using secondary data. The sample included 2051 adolescents (Mage baseline = 13.81, SDage baseline = 0.72; 48.5% female) who participated in a longitudinal project, which includes three annually collected waves of data. Participants completed self-report and peer-report measures describing interpersonal problems with peers, and self-report measures describing negative affectivity, self-esteem, and disordered eating behaviors. The results provided no support for either self-esteem or negative affectivity as mediators of the associations between interpersonal peer problems and disordered eating behaviors two years later. However, self-esteem was more robustly linked to all three types of subsequent disordered eating behaviors than negative affectivity. This highlights the importance of adolescent's self-evaluations in the development of disordered eating behaviors. 11 p.

Item does not contain fulltext Food parenting practices refer to food-specific, goal-oriented, discrete, and observable acts of parenting, which play an important role in the development of children's dietary behavior and Body Mass Index (BMI). During the past decade, experimental and intervention studies have improved our knowledge of the influence of food parenting practices on the development of children’s healthy dietary intake, including fruit and vegetable (F&V) intakes. However, less is known about whether and how food parenting practices influence the children’s intake of less healthy foods, including energy-dense foods and sugar-sweetened drinks and excessive weight gain and the risk of obesity. This chapter aims to summarize the recent advances in the studies of food parenting to create a clear picture of the potential targets for intervention research.

Junila Larsen, Universitair Docent aan de Radboud Universiteit, doet onderzoek naar eetgedrag en overgewicht. Haar onderzoek en publicaties gaan over hoe voedingspraktijken kunnen bijdragen aan een gezond eetgedrag van kinderen en hoe we kunnen voorkomen dat kinderen ongezond gaan eten. 'Eetgedrag in balans' gaat over het creëren van een gezonde eetomgeving. Hoe stimuleer je kinderen om groenten en fruit te eten? Hoe zorg je dat kinderen niet te veel eten? Hoe motiveer je ouders? Met aansprekende praktijkvoorbeelden en actuele kennis uit de wetenschap maakt de auteur duidelijk hoe een en ander aan te pakken is en wat de achterliggende theorie is. Ieder hoofdstuk eindigt met een samenvatting en reflectievragen waarmee de praktijk nog dichter bij komt. Item does not contain fulltext Inleiding: Verschillende studies hebben aangetoond dat mensen hun eetgedrag aanpassen aan dat van een ander; er wordt minder of meer gegeten als de tafelgenoot respectievelijk minder of meer eet. Een mogelijke verklaring voor dit imitatie-effect van eetgedrag is het synchroon verlopen van de inname van beide personen. Het belangrijkste doel van deze studie was onderzoeken of jonge vrouwen hun eetgedrag direct aanpassen aan dat van hun tafelgenoot en geneigd zijn een hap van hun maaltijd te nemen als de ander dit doet. Methoden: Om inzicht te krijgen in een mogelijk imitatie-effect, werden alle happen die beide tafelgenoten van hun warme maaltijd namen geanalyseerd (N = 3888). Aan dit onderzoek namen 70 vrouwelijke koppels deel (M leeftijd = 21,26, SD = 2,99) die elkaar niet kenden. Voor elk koppel werden het totale aantal happen en de tijd waarop ze genomen werden gecodeerd. Imitatie van eetgedrag werd gedefinieerd als het nemen van een hap binnen 5 seconden nadat de ander dit had gedaan. Happen die buiten dit tijdframe werden genomen, werden als niet-imitatiehappen gedefinieerd. Resultaten: Beide vrouwen pasten hun eetgedrag aan elkaar aan. De vrouwen waren eerder geneigd om een hap van de maaltijd te nemen als hun tafelgenoot dit deed dan dat ze hun eigen eettempo bepaalden. Dit imitatie-effect deed zich vaker voor aan het begin van de maaltijd dan aan het einde. Conclusie: Jonge vrouwen pasten hun eetgedrag nauwkeurig aan aan dat van een onbekende tafelgenoot. Het is belangrijk dat dergelijke beïnvloedingsprocessen meer aandacht krijgen in bijvoorbeeld interventies gericht op ‘gezond eten’ of in de preventie van overgewicht. 7 p.

No study, however, has tested the potential influences of both types of situational norms on intake during the same eating occasion. We experimentally tested the effects of manipulating portion size and the intake of others on young women's meal intake during a 20 min eating opportunity. An experimental design with a three (confederate's intake: small, standard, large) by two (portion size: small, standard) between-participants design was used. A total of eighty-five young women participated. Portion size and the confederate's intake both influenced young women's intake. Participants consumed more when offered a larger portion than when offered a smaller portion, and they also ate more when their eating companion ate more. The present results indicate that the effects of portion size and the intake of others were independent but additive. Thus, both types of situational norms might independently guide an individual's intake during a single eating occasion.

They eat more when the other eats more, and eat less when the other eats less. However, most of these studies have focused on snack situations. The present study assesses the degree to which young women model the breakfast intake of a same-sex peer in a semi-naturalistic setting. The study took place in a laboratory setting at the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, during the period January - April 2009. After completing three cover tasks, normal-weight participants (N=57) spent a 20-min break with a peer who ate a large amount or a small amount of breakfast or no breakfast at all. The participants' total amount of energy consumed (in kilocalories) during the break was measured. In this feature article, we discuss how authenticity operates in the context of emotion regulation (ER). In particular, we propose that individuals differ in the extent to which they engage in authentic emotion regulation and this individual difference predicts how effectively emotions will be regulated. First, we provide a broad overview of existing emotion regulationframeworks. Next, we define authentic emotion regulation. Finally, we discuss the implications that authentic emotion regulation has for emotional well-being and suggest some potential future directions. 4 p.

Item does not contain fulltext The Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) is a brief self-report measure for diagnosing anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Research has provided evidence of the reliability and validity of this scale in non-clinical populations. Our study is the first to examine the psychometric features of the EDDS in a clinical population of eating disordered patients. We identified a cut-off point that differentiates clinical patients from healthy controls. A clinical group of 59 Dutch female eating disordered patients and a control group of 45 Dutch students completed the EDDS, the Eating Disorder Examination Interview, the Body Attitude Test and the Beck Depression Inventory--II. The EDDS showed good test-retest reliability, internal consistency, criterion validity and convergent validity with other scales assessing eating and general pathology. An overall symptom composite cut-off score of 16.5 accurately distinguished clinical patients from healthy controls. The EDDS may be a useful instrument in clinical settings and in aetiologic, prevention and treatment research. 6 p.

We examined patients' explanations for unsuccessful weight loss and self-awareness regarding food intake. Methods: Interviews with 11 patients (10 female/1 male; mean age 46 years) with unsuccessful weight loss were transcribed and analyzed with the MAXqda2 program. Results: Interviewees were disappointed with the postoperative outcome. Some showed no awareness of their own role, while others were inefficacious to continue the actions needed to maintain weight loss, especially during times of stress. Typical statements that distinguished interviewees were: 'It didn’t work out', 'I don’t care anymore', 'I know I have to do it', 'I know I can do it'. Conclusion: Some patients with unsuccessful weight loss after LAGB are insufficiently aware that their own effort is needed to maintain weight loss. Others have self-awareness, but find it difficult to turn awareness into action. Practice implications: This group could perhaps be helped by tailoring postoperative guidance to the stage of change of an individual patient. Counseling could include increasing awareness of the need to self-control eating and offering assistance to turn intentions into action and to deal with stress, emotions and physical problems. 6 p.

This dissertation offers unique insights into this question by following adolescents themselves, their mothers, and their best friends over the first years of high school. It was revealed that the food intake of mothers, and less that of best friends, was associated with the development of adolescents’ (un)healthy food intake. For example, the results showed that when mothers snacked more unhealthily, adolescents themselves snacked more later on. The importance of mothers was also demonstrated during the coronacrisis. For instance, it was found that while, on average, adolescents' fruit and vegetable intake had permanently decreased after the first corona-lockdown, this decrease was not permanent for adolescents whose mothers consumed more fruits and vegetables.
