IntroductionExisting caregiver assessment tools were long criticized for focusing on the needs and burden while neglecting the importance of the resources. The current study aimed to develop a multidimensional and time-effective assessment tool that measures both needs and resources of non-paid family caregivers of older adults for screening and service-matching purposes.MethodsItems of the Caregiver Needs and Resources Assessment (CNRA) were developed from extensive literature reviews and focus group interviews of family caregivers and social workers in the field. In addition, we collected 317 valid responses from family caregivers of older adults from local non-government organizations in examining the psychometric properties of the CNRA.ResultsThe results revealed a 12-factor structure that fitted nicely into the conceptual frame of needs and resources domains. Need factors were positively associated with mental health symptoms, while resource factors were positively associated with peace in mind, meaning-making, and personal gain measures. The 36-item CNRA revealed good internal reliability and convergent validity.DiscussionThe CNRA has the potential to be used as a compact yet balanced assessment tool for understanding both the needs and resources of caregivers for human service professionals.

Objectives: To examine sex differences in the associations between vascular risk factors and 6-year changes in the volume of white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and between changes in WMH volumes and changes in cognitive performance, in a cohort of non-demented older adults. Methods: WMH volumes at 3 time-points (baseline, and 2- and 6-year follow-up) were automatically quantified in participants of Sydney Memory and Ageing Study (N = 605; age range = 70-92 years; 54.78% female). Linear mixed models were applied to examine the effects of vascular risk factors and cognitive consequences of the progression of WMH, as well as the sex moderation effects in the associations. Results: Total (TWMH), periventricular (PVWMH), and deep (DWMH) WMH volumes increased by 9.47%, 7.70%, and 11.78% per year, respectively. No sex differences were found in WMH progression rates. After Bonferroni correction, increases in PVWMH volumes over time were associated with decline in global cognition, especially in visuospatial and memory domains. Men with more increases in PVWMH volumes over time had greater declines in visuospatial abilities. Moreover, higher average TWMH volumes across time-points were associated with poorer average performance in processing speed and executive function domains across time. Higher average PVWMH volumes across time-points were also associated with worse average performance in the executive function domain over time, among women but not men. Conclusion: The findings highlighted sex differences in the associations between WMH progression and cognition decline over time, suggesting sex-specific strategies in managing WMH accumulations in ageing. We search the archival Zwicky Transient Facility public survey for rapidly evolving transient (RET) candidates based on well-defined criteria between 2018 May and 2021 December. The search yielded 19 bona-fide RET candidates, corresponding to a discovery rate of $\sim 5.2$ events per year. Even with a Galactic latitude cut of $20^\circ$, 8 of the 19 events ($\sim 42$%) are Galactic, including one with a light-curve shape closely resembling that of the GW170817 kilonova (KN). An additional event is a nova in M31. Four out of the 19 events ($\sim 21$%) are confirmed extragalactic RETs (one confirmed here for the first time) and the origin of 6 additional events cannot be determined. We did not find any extragalactic events resembling the GW170817 KN, from which we obtain an upper limit on the volumetric rate of GW170817-like KNe of $R \le$ 2400 Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ (95% confidence). Recently, there has been an emphasis on collecting large datasets in the field of sports medicine. While there have been great advances in areas of sport performance and sport epidemiology, there have been fewer efforts dedicated to understanding the effectiveness and impact of athletic healthcare, including injury prevention programs and rehabilitation interventions provided at the point-of-care. In 2009, the Athletic Training Practice-Based Research Network (AT-PBRN) was launched to address this need, with the mission of improving the quality of care provided by athletic trainers. Unlike other research efforts in sports and medicine, such as sport epidemiology, there are fewer methodological best practices specifically related to clinical data in athletic healthcare. As a result, the AT-PBRN has encountered several methodological challenges during its tenure and has established guidelines based on various sources within the fields of sports and medicine to address these challenges. Therefore, the purpose of this perspective is to identify the challenges and describe strategies to address these challenges related to characterizing athletic healthcare using a large database. Specifically, challenges related to data entry (data quality and reliability) and data extraction and processing (data variability and missing data) will be discussed. Sharing challenges and perspectives on solutions for collecting and reporting on athletic healthcare data may facilitate a greater consistency in the approach used to collect, analyze, and report on clinical data in athletic healthcare, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and the quality of care provided by athletic trainers.

COVID‐19 emerged in Wuhan, China, and began its worldwide journey. As the severity of the virus became known, the Chinese National Government mobilized resources, and their centralized management was critical to the containment of the epidemic. Healthcare agencies and providers were overwhelmed with patients, many of whom were critically ill and died. Nurses adapted to the work using personal protective equipment, but its initial scarcity contributed to stressful working conditions. Nurses in the United States can take several lessons from the experiences of their Chinese nurse colleagues, including the benefit of centralized management of the epidemic, the need for specialized treatment facilities, and the importance of a national stockpile of critical equipment and supplies. A fully funded United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of Pandemics and Emerging Threats is necessary. A nursing department within the office and a national mobilization plan to send nurses to support local efforts during a pandemic or other threat are likewise essential. Continuous training for nurses, especially caring for patients with infectious diseases in intensive care units, stress management, and how to comfort the dying, are also useful lessons.

Blue Large Amplitude Pulsators (BLAPs) are hot, subluminous stars undergoing rapid variability with periods of under 60 mins. They have been linked with the early stages of pre-white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. They are a rare class of variable star due to their evolutionary history within interacting binary systems and the short timescales relative to their lifetime in which they are pulsationally unstable. All currently known BLAPs are relatively faint (15-19 mag) and are located in the Galactic plane. These stars have intrinsically blue colours but the large interstellar extinction in the Galactic plane prevents them from swift identification using colour-based selection criteria. In this paper, we correct the Gaia $G$-band apparent magnitude and $G_{\mathrm{BP}}-G_{\mathrm{RP}}$ colours of 89.6 million sources brighter than 19 mag in the Galactic plane with good quality photometry combined with supplementary all-sky data totalling 162.3 million sources. Selecting sources with colours consistent with the known population of BLAPs and performing a cross-match with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) DR3, we identify 98 short period candidate variables. Manual inspection of the period-folded light curves reveals 22 candidate BLAPs. Of these targets, 6 are consistent with the observed periods and light curves of the known BLAPs, 10 are within the theoretical period range of BLAPs and 6 are candidate high-gravity BLAPs. We provide a suite of publicly available spectral data reduction software to facilitate rapid scientific products from time-domain observations. The Automated SpectroPhotometric REDuction (ASPIRED) toolkit is aimed to be as general as possible with high flexibility such that it can work with different instruments. The default settings support typical low-resolution long-slit spectrometer configurations, whilst it also offers a flexible set of functions for users to refine and tailor-make automated pipelines to an instrument's individual characteristics. Automation can provide immediate data reduction to allow adaptive observing strategies, which is particularly important in Time Domain Astronomy. Air pollution has long been a serious environmental health challenge, especially in metropolitan cities, where air pollutant concentrations are exacerbated by the street canyon effect and high building density. Whilst accurately monitoring and forecasting air pollution are highly crucial, existing data-driven models fail to fully address the complex interaction between air pollution and urban dynamics. Our Deep-AIR, a novel hybrid deep learning framework that combines a convolutional neural network with a long short-term memory network, aims to address this gap to provide fine-grained city-wide air pollution estimation and station-wide forecast. Our proposed framework creates 1x1 convolution layers to strengthen the learning of cross-feature spatial interaction between air pollution and important urban dynamic features, particularly road density, building density/height, and street canyon effect. Using Hong Kong and Beijing as case studies, Deep-AIR achieves a higher accuracy than our baseline models. Our model attains an accuracy of 67.6%, 77.2%, and 66.1% in fine-grained hourly estimation, 1-hr, and 24-hr air pollution forecast for Hong Kong, and an accuracy of 65.0%, 75.3%, and 63.5% for Beijing. Our saliency analysis has revealed that for Hong Kong, street canyon and road density are the best estimators for NO2, while meteorology is the best estimator for PM2.5.

Background Poor disease understanding and gaps in expertise regarding hemophilia care have been identified at all levels in Asia Pacific. Continued education for involved healthcare professionals (HCPs) is crucial for improved delivery. Objectives To identify training and educational needs of hemophilia HCPs in Asia Pacific. Methods Clinicians working at hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs), identified from the World Federation of Hemophilia Directory, were contacted by the Asia Pacific Hemophilia Working Group (APHWG). An electronic survey was sent to 161 centers from 15 countries for which HTC identification was complete to assess HTC characteristics, educational status, and needs. Responses were stratified by national economic capacity. Results From March 23 to June 6, 2016, clinicians from 58 HTCs completed the survey. Most reported availability of specialists to serve core patient requirements, although availability of trained nurses and geneticists was low in lower‐middle income countries (LMICs). Although 98.3% of HTCs had laboratory facilities, 8.8% do not participate in any quality assessment schemes. The most common limitations of current initiatives were infrequency and lack of local language content. Education is currently mostly received via internet, particularly among LMICs and upper‐middle income countries (UMICs), though there is strong preference for meetings. Main barriers to receiving education were funding and time constraints. Unique priority topics were musculoskeletal management, quality of life and management by non‐hematologists (high‐income countries), inhibitor management and research (UMICs), and outcomes assessment (LMICs). Conclusion In Asia Pacific, training programs should be tailored according to unique needs of differing economic capacities and resource settings.

Rejection Sampling is a fundamental Monte-Carlo method. It is used to sample from distributions admitting a probability density function which can be evaluated exactly at any given point, albeit at a high computational cost. However, without proper tuning, this technique implies a high rejection rate. Several methods have been explored to cope with this problem, based on the principle of adaptively estimating the density by a simpler function, using the information of the previous samples. Most of them either rely on strong assumptions on the form of the density, or do not offer any theoretical performance guarantee. We give the first theoretical lower bound for the problem of adaptive rejection sampling and introduce a new algorithm which guarantees a near-optimal rejection rate in a minimax sense., Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures. Facial expressions play an important role in conveying the emotional states of human beings. Recently, deep learning approaches have been applied to image recognition field due to the discriminative power of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). In this paper, we first propose a novel Multi-Region Ensemble CNN (MRE-CNN) framework for facial expression recognition, which aims to enhance the learning power of CNN models by capturing both the global and the local features from multiple human face sub-regions. Second, the weighted prediction scores from each sub-network are aggregated to produce the final prediction of high accuracy. Third, we investigate the effects of different sub-regions of the whole face on facial expression recognition. A large sample of white dwarfs is selected by both proper motion and colours from the Pan-STARRS 1 3�� Steradian Survey Processing Version 2 to construct the White Dwarf Luminosity Functions of the discs and halo in the solar neighbourhood. Four-parameter astrometric solutions were recomputed from the epoch data. The generalised maximum volume method is then used to calculate the density of the populations. After removal of crowded areas near the Galactic plane and centre, the final sky area used by this work is 7.833 sr, which is 83% of the 3�� sky and 62% of the whole sky. By dividing the sky using Voronoi tessellation, photometric and astrometric uncertainties are recomputed at each step of the integration to improve the accuracy of the maximum volume. Interstellar reddening is considered throughout the work. In this paper, we propose an adaptive fast solver for a general class of symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices which include the well-known graph Laplacian. We achieve this by developing an adaptive operator compression scheme and a multiresolution matrix factorization algorithm which achieve nearly optimal performance on both complexity and well-posedness. To develop our adaptive operator compression and multiresolution matrix factorization methods, we first introduce a novel notion of energy decomposition for SPD matrix $A$ using the representation of energy elements. The interaction between these energy elements depicts the underlying topological structure of the operator. This concept of decomposition naturally reflects the hidden geometric structure of the operator which inherits the localities of the structure. By utilizing the intrinsic geometric information under this Energy framework, we propose a systematic operator compression scheme for the inverse operator $A^{-1}$. In particular, with an appropriate partition of the underlying geometric structure, we can construct localized basis by using the concept of interior and closed energy. Meanwhile, two important localized quantities are introduced, namely the error factor and the condition factor. Our error analysis results show that these two factors will be the guidelines for finding the appropriate partition of the basis functions such that prescribed compression error and acceptable condition number can be achieved. White dwarfs are among the most common objects in the stellar halo; however, due to their low luminosity and low number density compared to the stars in the discs of the Milky Way, they are scarce in the observable volume. Hence, they are still poorly understood one hundred years after their discovery as relatively few have been observed. They are crucial to the understanding of several fundamental properties of the Galaxy {\mdash} the geometry, kinematics and star formation history, as well as to the study of the end-stage of stellar evolution for low- and intermediate-mass stars. White dwarfs were traditionally identified by their ultraviolet (UV) excess, however, if they have cooled for a long time, they become so faint in that part of the spectrum that they cannot be seen by the most sensitive modern detectors. Proper motion was then used as a means to identify white dwarf candidates, due to their relatively large space motions compared to other objects with the same colour. The use of proper motion as a selection criterion has proven effective and has yielded large samples of candidates with the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Research information related to application of enzyme as pretreatment and subsequent functional finishing on wool blended textiles for imparting multi-functional properties is still scanty. Yarn-blended wool/cotton fabric was pretreated with both a cellulase (Bactosol-CA) or a protease (Savinase-16.0LEx) in individual, subsequently finished with Synthappret- BAP and β-cyclodextrin based combination to impart anti-shrink, anti-microbial, softening and anti-crease properties. The performance of the finished fabrics depended on type of finishing combinations applied rather than enzyme pretreatment. Savinase pretreatment followed by Synthappret+Ceraperm-MW combination finishing impart both anti-shrink property as well as softening, while Bactosol pretreatment followed by β-cyclodextrin and sanitize combination finishing impart antimicrobial activity as well as anti-shrink finish to the wool/cotton blend fabric.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate development of the non-invasive blood glucose measurement of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that NIR spectroscopy might obtain glucose concentration of up to 200% difference under a same environmental condition with two months apart due to time and machine drifts. These effects can restrict the development of the non-invasive blood glucose measurement. Partial least square (PLS) regression was used, which showed advantage over using simple absorbance for glucose concentration. Non-invasive blood glucose measurement of health subjects (non-diabetics) was also investigated. The results showed that R correlation coefficient of prediction (Rp) was 0.48 and root mean square of prediction (rmsep) was 1.34 mmol/l. The error was mainly due to the physiological effect of different subjects.

This thesis presents the development of ad-hoc experimental and integrated modelling techniques for springback compensation in creep-age forming (CAF). A test programme is presented which describes the material and workpiece information and the test plans for the experimental evaluation of the creep-ageing and springback behaviour of aluminium alloy 7B04-T651 under 115 oC. Experimental results from the creep-ageing and tensile tests were used to determine a CAF material model for the alloy. A flexible tool design has been proposed and a laboratory-scale prototype has been delivered and used to perform the CAF tests in this research. The determined CAF material model and geometry of the flexible tool design were treated as input and used to construct a CAF process model using finite element (FE) method. Comparisons between final deflections of FE-simulated and experimentally formed plates validated the springback predictive ability of the FE process model. The model was eventually employed to model springback-compensated tool shapes and using the modelled tool shapes to perform CAF tests have produced formed plates that have an average 0.81±0.14 mm of maximum absolute vertical difference from target shape. CAF can now be used to produce accurately shaped panel components in a laboratory environment using the equipment and techniques developed in this research. Open Access

The use of Reduced Proper Motion in identifying isolated white dwarfs has long been used as a proxy for the absolute magnitude in a population with known kinematics. This, however, introduces a proper motion detection limit on top of the existing photometric limit. How the survey volume is hampered by this extra parameter is discussed in Hambly et al. 2012. In this work, we discuss some robust outlier rejection methods in order to minimise the proper motion limit and hence maximise the survey volume. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la expresión de citoquinas proinflamatorias de leucocitos circulantes de alpaca al enfrentarlos a extracto total de Clostidium perfringens (componentes estructurales y toxinas). Se colectó sangre entera de la vena yugular de 5 alpacas hembras y 5 alpacas machos adultos. Los leucocitos fueron separados utilizando cloruro de amonio para lisar los eritrocitos, seguido de centrifugación y luego cultivados a una concentración de 500 000 leucocitos/ml de medio MEM (Medio Mínimo Esencial) en placas de cultivo de 12 pocillos. Simultáneamente, fueron enfrentados a extracto total de C. perfringens cultivados en caldo tioglicolato a concentraciones de 400, 80, 16, 0.8 y 0.2 μg/ml, para luego cuantificar, mediante la RTPCR, la expresiσn de las citoquinas TNFα, IL-1α, IL-1β e IL-6 a 1, 12 y 24 h de exposiciσn. Los resultados demostraron que dosis bajas de extractos clostridiales (0.2 a 0.8 μg/ml) son capaces de inducir expresiones de TNFα, IL-1α, e IL-1β a 1, 12 y 24 h de incubaciσn, a diferencia de dosis altas donde no sobrepasan la expresiσn de las citoquinas en leucocitos no estimulados (control). No se evidencia producción considerable de IL-6 hasta las 24 h post exposición a extracto completo de C. perfringens. Los resultados indican que el C. perfringens y sus toxinas a dosis bajas inducen la activación de los leucocitos circulantes de alpacas produciendo la secreción de citoquinas proinflamatorias. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines of alpaca circulating leukocytes when confronting total extract of Clostridum perfringens (structural components and toxins). Whole blood was collected from the jugular vein of 5 female and 5 male adult alpacas. The leukocytes were separated using ammonium chloride to lyse erythrocytes followed by centrifugation and then cultured at a concentration of 500 000 cells/ml of MEM (Minimal Essential Medium) in culture plates of 12 wells. Simultaneously were challenged with total extract of C. perfringens grown in thioglycolate broth at concentrations of 400, 80, 16, 0.8 and 0.2 μg/ml and then quantifying by RT-PCR the expression of cytokines TNFα, IL-1α, IL-6 and IL-1β at 1, 12 and 24 h of exposure. The results showed that low doses of clostridial extracts (0.2 to 0.8 mg/ml) are capable of inducing expression of TNF, IL-1α and IL-1β at 1, 12 and 24 h of incubation, whereas higher doses do not exceed the expression of cytokines in unstimulated (control) leukocytes. There was no significant production of IL-6 up to 24 h after exposure to whole extract of C. perfringens. These results indicate that C. perfringens and its toxins at low doses induce activation of circulatory leukocyte in alpacas producing proinflammatory cytokine secretion.

In large area micro hot embossing, the process temperature plays a critical role to both the local fidelity of microstructure formation and global uniformity. The significance of low temperature hot embossing is to improve global flatness of embossed devices. This paper reports on experimental studies of polymer deformation and relaxation in micro embossing when the process temperatures are below or near its glass transition temperature (Tg). In this investigation, an indentation system and a micro embosser were used to investigate the relationship of microstructure formation versus process temperature and load pressure. The depth of indentation was controlled and the load force at a certain indentation depth was measured. Experiments were carried out using 1 mm thick PMMA films with the process temperature ranging from Tg-55 degrees C to Tg +20 degrees C. The embossed structures included a single micro cavity and groups of micro cavity arrays. It was found that at temperature of Tg-55 degrees C, elastic deformation dominated the formation of microstructures and significant relaxation happened after embossing. From Tg-20 degrees C to Tg, plastic deformation dominated polymer deformation, and permanent cavities could be formed on PMMA substrates without obvious relaxation. However, the formation of protrusive structures as micro pillars was not complete since there was little polymer flow. With an increase in process temperature, microstructure could be formed under lower loading pressure. Mental disorders are highly prevalent conditions with immense disease burden. To inform health and social services policy formulation, local psychiatric epidemiological data are required. The Hong Kong Mental Morbidity Survey is a 3-year population-based study in which 5700 community-dwelling Chinese adults aged between 16 and 75 years were interviewed with the aim of evaluating the prevalence, co-morbidity, functional impairment, physical morbidity, and social determinants of significant mental disorders in the population. This paper describes the background and design of the survey, and is the first territory-wide psychiatric epidemiological study in Hong Kong.
