The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

A detailed investigation on the relative isotopic distributions has been carried out for the first time in case of even-even correlated fission fragments for the $^{235}$U($n_{th}$,$f$) fission reaction. High-statistics data were obtained in a prompt $��$ ray spectroscopy measurement during the EXILL campaign at ILL, Grenoble, France. The extensive off-line analysis of the coincidence data have been carried out using four different coincidence methods. Combining the results from 2-dimensional $��-��$ and 3-dimensional $��-��-��$ coincidence analysis, a comprehensive picture of the relative isotopic yield distributions of the even-even neutron-rich fission fragments has emerged. The experimentally observed results have been substantiated by the theoretical calculations based on a novel approach of isospin conservation, and a reasonable agreement has been obtained. The calculations following the semi-empirical GEF model have also been carried out. High-resolution. -ray spectroscopy of N-18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O-18 beam on a Ta-181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N-18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0(1)(-) and 1(2)(-) excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N-16 and N-18, for the first time. Understanding the N-18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

To test the predictive power of ab initio nuclear structure theory, the lifetime of the second 2+ state in neutron-rich 20O,τ(2+2)=150+80−30fs, and an estimate for the lifetime of the second 2+ state in 16C have been obtained for the first time. The results were achieved via a novel Monte Carlo technique that allowed us to measure nuclear state lifetimes in the tens-to-hundreds of femtoseconds range by analyzing the Doppler-shifted γ-transition line shapes of products of low-energy transfer and deep-inelastic processes in the reaction 18O(7.0MeV/u)+181Ta. The requested sensitivity could only be reached owing to the excellent performances of the Advanced γ-Tracking Array AGATA, coupled to the PARIS scintillator array and to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. The experimental lifetimes agree with predictions of ab initio calculations using two- and three-nucleon interactions, obtained with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group for 20O and with the no-core shell model for 16C. The present measurement shows the power of electromagnetic observables, determined with high-precision γ spectroscopy, to assess the quality of first-principles nuclear structure calculations, complementing common benchmarks based on nuclear energies. The proposed experimental approach will be essential for short lifetime measurements in unexplored regions of the nuclear chart, including r-process nuclei, when intense beams, produced by Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) techniques, become available.

Prompt and delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 94Kr was performed, as part of the fission campaign at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay, using the fast-neutron-induced fission reaction 238U(n,f) in combination with the ν-Ball array, a novel hybrid γ spectrometer for energy and lifetime measurements. Several new yrast and nonyrast transitions were observed for the first time, extending the previously known level scheme. Additionally, we report on the observation of a new short-lived isomer at 3444 keV with a half-life of 32(3) ns. The analysis of the Nilsson orbitals obtained from Gogny cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations suggests a (9−) spin and an oblate deformation for this isomer corresponding to a two-quasineutron state, indicating an isomeric structure very similar to that of the neighboring isotones 96Sr and 92Se.

Ba136 is populated in a Xe136+U238 MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS γ-ray array. The level scheme above the Jπ=10+ isomer in Ba136 is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approximately 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex=3707- and Ex=4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both Te132 and Xe134 are characterized by high-energy 12+→10+ transitions, the Ba136E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negative-parity states only a few hundred keV above the Jπ=10+ isomer. Furthermore, spins are established for several hitherto unassigned high-spin states in Ba137. Background: The nuclear shape is a macroscopic feature of an atomic nucleus that is sensitive to the underlying nuclear structure in terms of collectivity and the interaction between nucleons. Therefore, the evolution of nuclear shapes has attracted many theoretical and experimental nuclear structure studies. The structure of the A≈ 70 , N≈ Z nuclei, lying far from the stability line, is interesting because a particularly strong proton-neutron correlation may occur here due to the occupation of the same orbits by nucleons of both types. In this region, different particle configurations drive a nucleus towards various deformed shapes: prolate, oblate, octupole, or nonaxial. These nuclear shapes change rapidly with nucleon number and also with angular momentum. This is reflected by a presence of different structures (bands) of excited states which exhibit a broad range of lifetimes. Purpose: The aim of this paper is to determine lifetimes of some high-spin excited states in 69 As and 66 Ge nuclei to examine the shape evolution in these neutron-deficient nuclei. Methods: Lifetimes of high-spin states in 69 As and 66 Ge have been measured by using the Doppler-shift attenuation technique with the GASP and recoil filter detector setup at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The nuclei of interest were produced in the 32 S ( 95 MeV ) + 0.8 mg / cm 2 40 Ca fusion-evaporation reaction. The strongest reaction channels 3p and α 2 p led to the 69 As and 66 Ge final nuclei, respectively. Using γ − γ -recoil coincidences we were able to determine very short lifetimes (in the femtosecond range) in the residual nuclei of interest. Results: In 69 As , the extracted lifetimes are τ = 72 ( − 32 , +45 ) fs for the 33 / 2 + state at 7897 keV and τ < 85 fs for the 37 / 2 + state at 9820 keV. For the 66 Ge case, the lifetime of the 11 − state at 7130 keV is τ = 122 ( ± 41 ) fs. Lifetimes in 69 As and 66 Ge reported in this paper have been measured for the first time in the present experiment. Conclusions: The results are discussed in the terms of deformation and shape evolution in 69 As and 66 Ge . The quadrupole moments deduced from the measured lifetimes were compared with the cranked Woods-Saxon-Strutinsky calculations by means of the total Routhian surface method. It turns out that Band 3 in 69 As shows an oblate-prolate shape transition, and above spin 33 / 2 + it corresponds to a prolate collective structure with β 2 ≈ 0.27 and γ ≈ 20 ∘ . In turn, in 66 Ge the negative-parity band built on the 7− state at 4205 keV corresponds to a triaxial shape with β 2 = 0.33 and γ = 31 ∘ . Analysis of the transitional quadrupole moments derived from the experimental and theoretical ones points to a significant change of deformation in the 69 As and 66 Ge nuclei with increasing rotational frequency.

The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 56 isotopes. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, SN100PN, SNV, PQM130, Realistic SM, and EPQQM interactions reproduce the experimental findings and elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. The transitional nucleus 131Xe is investigated after multinucleon transfer in the 136Xe + 208Pb and 136Xe + 238U reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced γ -Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction 124Sn(11B,p3n) 131Xe employing the High-efficiency Observatory for γ -Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) γ -ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of 131Xe is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at hω¯ ≈ 0.4 MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α = −1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 isotopes and the N = 77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in 129−132Xe provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N = 82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π 0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

13 pags., 12 figs., 4 tabs., Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se80,82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the γ-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (61+) and (81+) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 41+ state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 61+ state and the yrare 42+ state and lifetime limits of the yrast (101+) state and of the 51- state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. 20 pags., 12 figs., 14 tabs., A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42., K.H.-K. acknowledges support from the Research Council of Norway under Grant No. 213442. The in-beam tests of two Si pixel type TRACE detectors have been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the possibility of identifying heavy-ion reactions products with mass A~10 at low kinetic energy, i.e., around 10 MeV. Two separate read-out chains, digital and analog, were used. The Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the identification matrices for the digitally processed part of the data. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained, however, the $\alpha$ particles contaminated significantly the recorded data in the lower energy part. Due to this effect, the identification of the light products ($^{7,6}$Li isotopes) could be possible down only to ~20 MeV, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The transitional nuclei Xe132 and Xe133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Neutron-rich isotopes around lead, beyond N = 126, have been studied exploiting the fragmentation of an uranium primary beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. For the first time beta-decay half-lives of Bi-219 and Tl-211,Tl-212,Tl-213 isotopes have been derived. The half-lives have been extracted using a numerical simulation developed for experiments in high-background conditions. Comparison with state of the art models used in r-process calculations is given, showing a systematic underestimation of the experimental values, at variance from close-lying nuclei. One of the most exciting subjects in contemporary nuclear physics is the study of nuclei at the limits of stability with respect to particle emission. Recently, there has been an intensive experimental activity in measuring proton decay and a large variety of proton emitters were observed in the region of nuclei with 50 < Z < 82. Very recently, the proton radioactivity from 117La and 121Pr has been identified and the decay rate deviates significantly from calculations assuming spherical configurations, thus indicating the onset of large deformations in the drip line nuclei below Z = 69. Predictions by the microscopicmacroscopicmass model and by relativistic mean field calculations support these experimental results and suggest the position of the proton drip line. The lifetimes of the proton-decaying isomers are extremely sensitive to the orbital angular momentum ` of the emitted proton and can vary over several orders of magnitude when changing the angular momentum of the occupied orbital. The position of certain orbitals at the Fermi surface depends strongly on the beta2 deformation. It is therefore very important to determine the quadrupole deformation of the nuclei at and beyond the proton drip line, in order to locate the orbitals close to the Fermi surface and to estimate the lifetime of the isomers, which is essential when looking for new proton emitters. The deformation of the nuclei at the proton drip line in the A 130 mass region can be experimentally tested by comparing the lifetimes of proton emitters with theoretical predictions and by investigating the level structure of particle bound nuclei close to the drip line. For Z = 57 the proton drip line is predicted to correspond to the isotope 118La. The lightest La nucleus for which spectroscopic information has been published is 124La . This thesis bescribes an experiment realised to identify for the first time excited states of the doubly-odd nucleus 122 57 La65. Another aspect that make particularly interesting a study of these nuclei is a well-established phenomenon in two-quasiparticle rotational bands in odd-odd nuclei: the signature inversion. Despite the observation of signature inversion in many different nuclei, and numerous theoretical interpretations, a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon has yet to be found. We want verify if the experimental level scheme of 122La is in agreement with the systematics of the other nuclei in this mass region. The common feature relating the studies of these neutron deficient nuclei is that they are populated with extremely low cross section and require special techniques to be identified. The standard efficient way to achieve this is the use of arrays of high-purity germanium detectors coupled to specific ancillary devices for their selection. Our experiment has been performed at the Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL) where heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction 40Ca(@ 200 MeV)+92Mo was performed to establish the scheme of 122La by using the GASP -ray spectrometer in conjunction with the ancillary charged-particle ISIS detector and the Neutron Ring. This experimental set-up led to numerous achievements in the A 130 mass region. Chapter 1 introduces to the physics of the nuclei close and beyond to the proton drip-line. In Chapter 2 we will briey see the various theoretical models created to describe several types of nuclear excitations and discuss in more detail the cranking model. Chapter 3 describes the experimental techniques of -ray spectroscopy and the setup used for the present measurement. In Chapter 4 the steps followed in the sorting of the raw data to produce particle-gated matrices are described, together with the techniques used to select the different reaction channels and to clean the spectra. Chapter 5 shows the systematic features of the rotational bands of the A 130 proton rich odd-odd nuclei. Chapter 6 will be devoted to the construction of the decay scheme and to the spins assignments, performed through the analysis of gated matrices, transition intensities, DCO, and the comparison with the systematics of the La isotopes. Finally, in Chapter 7, the results are discussed in the light of the deduced experimental quantities like single-particle spin alignment, dynamic moments of inertia, signature splitting, and B(M1)=B(E2) branching ratios to assign the Nilsson orbitals to the found bands.

Nuclear level densities and $��$-ray strength functions of $^{56,57}$Fe have been extracted from proton-$��$ coincidences. A low-energy enhancement in the $��$-ray strength functions up to a factor of 30 over common theoretical E1 models is confirmed. Angular distributions of the low-energy enhancement in $^{57}$Fe indicate its dipole nature, in agreement with findings for $^{56}$Fe. The high statistics and the excellent energy resolution of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$(Ce) detectors allowed for a thorough analysis of $��$ strength as function of excitation energy. Taking into account the presence of strong Porter-Thomas fluctuations, there is no indication of any significant excitation-energy dependence in the $��$-ray strength function, in support of the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis., 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in J. The possible nuclear compartmentalization of glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoenzymes has been the subject of contradictory reports. The discovery that the dinitrosyl-diglutathionyl- iron complex binds tightly to Alpha class GSTs in rat hepatocytes and that a significant part of the bound complex is also associated with the nuclear fraction (Pedersen, J. Z., De Maria, F., Turella, P., Federici, G., Mattei, M., Fabrini, R., Dawood, K. F., Massimi, M., Caccuri, A. M., and Ricci, G. (2007) J. Biol. Chem. 282, 6364–6371) prompted us to reconsider the nuclear localization of GSTs in these cells. Surprisingly, we found that a considerable amount of GSTs corresponding to 10% of the cytosolic pool is electrostatically associated with the outer nuclear membrane, and a similar quantity is compartmentalized inside the nucleus. Mainly Alpha class GSTs, in particular GSTA1-1, GSTA2-2, and GSTA3-3, are involved in this double modality of interaction. Confocal microscopy, immunofluorescence experiments, and molecular modeling have been used to detail the electrostatic association in hepatocytes and liposomes. A quantitative analysis of the membrane-bound Alpha GSTs suggests the existence of a multilayer assembly of these enzymes at the outer nuclear envelope that could represent an amazing novelty in cell physiology. The interception of potentially noxious compounds to prevent DNA damage could be the possible physiological role of the perinuclear and intranuclear localization of Alpha GSTs.

The $��$-ray strength function of $^{56}$Fe has been measured from proton-$��$ coincidences for excitation energies up to $\approx 11$ MeV. The low-energy enhancement in the $��$-ray strength function, which was first discovered in the ($^3$He,$����$)$^{56}$Fe reaction, is confirmed with the ($p,p^\prime��$)$^{56}$Fe experiment reported here. Whether the newly discovered KxFe2-ySe2 systems are doped Mott or band insulators is key to how superconductivity emerges at lower temperature. With extant theoretical studies supporting conflicting scenarios, a more realistic approach is urgently called for. Here, we use LDA+DMFT to study this issue in KxFe2-ySe2. We find that the undoped KFe1.6Se2 system is a new kind of Mott-Kondo insulator (MKI). Electron doping this MKI drives a Mott transition to an orbital-selective non-Fermi liquid metal. Good agreement with spectral and transport responses supports our view, implying that superconductivity arises from a doped Mott insulator, as in the high-Tc cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We analyze electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of the spinel compound MgTi$_2$O$_4$ using the local density approximation+U method. We show how MgTi$_2$O$_4$ undergoes to a canted orbital-spin ordered state, where charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom are frozen in a geometrically frustrated network by electron interactions. In our picture orbital order stabilize the magnetic ground state and controls the degree of structural distortions. The latter is dynamically derived from the cubic structure in the correlated LDA+U potential. Our ground-state theory provides a consistent picture for the dimerized phase of MgTi$_2$O$_4$, and might be applicable to frustrated materials in general., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

$��$-FeSe, a prototype iron-chalcogenide superconductor, shows clear signatures of a strange incoherent normal state. Motivated thereby, we use LDA+DMFT to show how strong multi-band correlations generate a low-energy pseudogap in the normal state, giving an incoherent metal in very good semi-quantitative agreement with observations. We interpret our results in terms of $��$-FeSe being close to Mottness. A wide range of anomalous responses in the "normal" state are consistently explained, lending strong support for this view. The lifetimes of the first excited states of the N = 30 isotones 50Ca and 51Sc and the Z = 18 isotopes 44−46Ar isotopes have been determined using a novel technique that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers in multinucleon transfer reactions. The results allow determinination of the effective charges above 48Ca and test the strength of the N = 28 magic number when moving away from the stability line. The gamma decay from Coulomb excitation of 68Ni at 600 MeV/nucleon on a Au target was measured using the RISING setup at the fragment separator of GSI. The 68Ni beam was produced by a fragmentation reaction of 86Kr at 900 MeV/nucleon on a 9Be target and selected by the fragment separator. The gamma rays produced at the Au target were measured with HPGe detectors at forward angles and with BaF2 scintillators at backward angles. The measured spectra show a peak centered at approximately 11 MeV, whose intensity can be explained in terms of an enhanced strength of the dipole response function (pygmy resonance). Such pygmy structure has been predicted in this unstable neutron-rich nucleus by theory.

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) in doped Iron pnictides is the latest example of unanticipated behavior exhibited by $d$- and $f$-band materials. The symmetry of the SC gap, along with the mechanism of its emergence from the ``normal'' state is a central issue in this context. Here, motivated by a host of experimental signatures suggesting strong correlations in the Fe-pnictides, we undertake a detailed study of their normal state. Focussing on symmetry-unbroken phases, we use the correlated band structure method, LDA+DMFT, to study the one-particle responses of both ${\rm LaO_{1-x}FeAsF_{x}}$ and ${\rm SmO_{1-x}FeAsF_{x}}$ in detail. Basing ourselves on excellent quantitative agreement between LDA+DMFT and key experiments probing the one-particle responses, we extend our study, undertaking the first detailed study of their normal state electrodynamic response. In particular, we propose that near-total normal state incoherence, resulting from strong, {\it local} correlations in the Fe $d$-shell in Fe-pnictides, underpins the incoherent normal state transport found in these materials, and discuss the specific electronic mechanisms leading to such behavior. We also discuss the implications of our work for the multi-band nature of the SC by studying the pairing ``glue'' function, which we find to be an overdamped, electronic continuum. Similarities and differences between cuprates and Fe-pnictides are also touched upon. Our study supports the view that SC in Fe-pnictides arises from a bad metallic, incoherent ``normal'' state that is proximate to a Mott insulator., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

The gamma-ray spectra from the decay of the GDR in the compound nucleus reaction 18O+28Si at bombarding energy of 105 MeV have been measured in an experiment using the EUROBALL IV and HECTOR arrays. The obtained experimental GDR strength function is highly fragmented, with a low energy (10 MeV) component, indicating a presence of a large deformation and Coriolis effects. The doping induced insulator-metal transition in $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ is studied using the ab-initio LDA+DMFT method. Combining the LDA bandstructure for the actual, distorted structure found recently with multi-orbital DMFT to treat electronic correlations, we find: $(i)$ ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulating state without orbital degeneracy, $(ii)$ a continuous filling induced transition to the paramagnetic metal (PM) with $x$, and $(iii)$ excellent quantitative agreement with published photoemission data for the case of 6% doping.
