1. Predictors of Usability of a Mobile Intelligent Agent Information Provider for College Students

Abstract: This study determined the factors that influenced the usability of a mobile-based intelligent agent called “AskRed.” The design-related factors were evaluated in terms of performance, accuracy, responsiveness, aesthetics, and completeness. The usability of the software was determined in terms of satisfaction and intention to re-use the software. The software received favorable ratings from the students. Experts' software evaluation recommended strengthening the design of the intelligent agent in terms of security, performance, completeness, and ease-of-use. Multiple regression analyses showed that performance and completeness influenced satisfaction and intention to re-use. Aesthetics and responsiveness influenced satisfaction but not intention to re-use. Responsiveness had a negative impact on satisfaction. The predictive powers of the regression equations are 58% and 73%. This study provided empirical evidence on the predictors of usability of an intelligent agent used in a university setting.

Abstract: Las plantas hospederas de mosca de la fruta fueron evaluados de los fundos de la zona de Satipo, en campo y laboratorio. Los resultados muestran que los cítricos están infestadas por Anastrepha fraterculus; mientras que los frutales nativos con otras especies de Anastrepha, como son A. striata, A. leptozona, y A. distincta. Se ha encontrado un díptero amarillo en el caimito que no pertenece a los tephritidae. Se tiene 19 frutales distintos hospederas, siendo los cítricos C. reticulata x C. aurantifolia, Citrus limettioides, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus reticulata, Citrus reshni, Citrus sinensis, C. reticulata x C. sinensis, C. reticulata x C. paradisi; y los frutales nativos y exóticos, Chrysophillum caimito, Averrhoa carambola, Spondias sp., Psidium guajaba, Manguifera indica, Inga edulis Mart, Anacardiaceae y Matisia cordata. El uvo de monte, guayaba y caimito sufren un daño de entre 83 Y 100%. El zapote y pacae muestran daños de entre 66 a 53%. El mango y carambola muestran daños de 31 a 26%. En los cítricos, la naranja Washington muestra los niveles más altos de infestación con 45%,; las mandarinas entre 27 y 32%, las naranjas entre 14 y 22%, los híbridos entre 20 y 22%, los portainjertos entre 26 y 27%. 3. A strategy to determine off-axis dosimetric leaf gap using OSLD and EPID

Abstract: Background The aim of the study was to investigate the dosimetric feasibility of using optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLD) and an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) for central axis (CA X) and off-axis (OAX) dosimetric leaf gap (DLG) measurement. Materials and methods The Clinac 2100C/D linear accelerator equipped with Millennium-120 multileaf collimator (MLC) and EPID was utilized for this study. The DLG values at CA X and ± 1 cm OAX (1 cm superior and inferior to the CA X position, respectively along the plane perpendicular to MLC motion) were measured using OSLD (DLGOSLD) and validated using ionization chamber dosimetry (DLGICD). The two-dimensional DLG map (2D DLGEPID) was derived from the portal images of the DLG plan using a custom-developed software application that incorporated sliding aperture-specific correction factors. Results DLGOSLD and DLGICD, though measured with diverse setup in different media, showed similar variation both at CA X and ± 1 cm OAX positions. The corresponding DLGEPID values derived using aperture specific corrections were found to be in agreement with DLGOSLD and DLGICD. The 2D DLGEPID map provides insight into the varying patterns of the DLG with respect to each leaf pair at any position across the exposed field. Conclusions Commensurate results of DLGOSLD with DLGICD values have proven the efficacy of OSLD as an appropriate dosimeter for DLG measurement. The 2D DLGEP ID map opens a potential pathway to accurately model the rounded-leaf end transmission with discrete leaf-specific DLG values for commissioning of a modern treatment planning system.

Abstract: The rumen wharves conglomerate of symbiotic fibrolytic microflora with the potential to produce repertoire of carbohydrate-active enzymes to elicit the degradation of recalcitrant plant lignocellulosic complex into simpler forms that can be utilized by the host. A metatranscriptomics approach was adopted to explore the metabolically active microbiota and the transcripts involved in the deconstruction of lignocellulose in Indian crossbred cattle rumen. The experimental animals were fed with mixed diet for a period of twenty-one days and the total RNA was isolated from the rumen digesta using a modified total RNA extraction protocol. After mRNA enrichment, the cDNA libraries were subjected to sequencing under Illumina HiSeq platform and generated about 2.89 GB of raw sequences. The contig assembly was accomplished using two different tools and the redundant sequences were removed before further processing. A total of 133,930 orfs were predicted from the assembled contigs using MetaGeneMark tool and the taxonomic affiliation of orfs were achieved using MEGAN 6.0 Community Edition. A total of 17 bacterial, 5 eukaryotic and 1 archaeal phylum were identified from rumen metatranscriptomic dataset. Phylum Bacteroidetes were acknowledged as the most abundant and metabolically active rumen bacterial populations in cattle rumen with 36,414 orfs corresponding to it, followed by Firmicutes with 6,349 orfs. Further, MEGAN annotation of metatranscriptomic data at species level revealed that Prevotella brevis and Prevotella ruminicola as the most metabolically active bacterial populations representing 4,022 and 2,725 orfs each. The functional annotation of metatranscriptomic data using COG database revealed that a large number of transcripts (~16%) were corresponding to translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis and carbohydrate transport and metabolism (15%). dbCAN annotation of rumen metatranscriptomic data identified and classified 5,267 transcripts belonging to 168 CAZyme families (GH-52%, GT-26%, CBM-14%, CE-6%, PL-2% and AA-0%). The microbial community analysis of the CAZyme encoding transcripts using M5NR database revealed that a significant proportion of CAZymes were contributed by genera Prevotella (37%) and Bacteroides (21%). The cattle rumen microbiome metatranscriptome analysis presented in this study facilitated the detection of large number of transcripts encoding diverse CAZymes that actively take part in the hydrolysis of plant lignocellulose complex that may be useful for improving livestock and biofuel generation.

Abstract: The little opportunity in the care of patients awaiting surgery causes multiple and serious consequences for them, their family and relatives. Given the complexity of the hospital system, and specifically operating room systems, their current planning has ample space for productivity improvement. This work uses simulation modeling approach to build a valid model of the OR system in the public hospital of Puerto Montt- Chile. To describe the model, activity data from the ORs and waiting lists for the year 2017 is used (near 15,000 interventions, an initial waiting list of 6,500 patients, 15 ORs, 150 surgeons, four daily hourly periods and consideration of weekends] to model the operation of the system using statistical and probability techniques. The model is validated using more than a dozen of performance indicators making it adequate to represent the true dynamics of the system in a simulation study.

Abstract: En el artículo se realiza un estudio comparativo totalmente real de la calidad de aire que han tenido unos usuarios reales en el interior de una vivienda finalizada en el año 2009, dentro de un edificio diseñado con criterios bioclimáticos, y de la calidad de aire de la que disfrutan esos mismos usuarios, con idénticos patrones de comportamiento, en una vivienda certificada bajo el estándar Passivhaus, construida en el año 2019 y que también forma parte de un edificio residencial colectivo. Se analizan los patrones de temperatura, humedad, concentración de dióxido de carbono y de formaldehídos. Además, se realizan diversos ensayos en función de determinados regímenes de funcionamiento del sistema de ventilación con recuperador de calor y de la aerotermia. Como conclusión final, se obtienen unos resultados que sirven para evaluar de un modo real, objetivo y transparente, como pueden mejorar la calidad de aire interior de una vivienda, en condiciones estándar de uso, los nuevos edificios de consumo de energía casi nulo y como esta mejora en la calidad del aire incide de un modo muy positivo en la salud de las personas. Abstract The paper makes a totally real comparative study of the air quality that some real users have had inside a house completed in 2009, inside a building designed with bioclimatic criteria, and of the air quality of the enjoyed by those same users, with identical behavior patterns, in a house certified under the Passivhaus standard, built in 2019 and which is also part of a collective residential building. The patterns of temperature, humidity, concentration of carbon dioxide and formaldehyde are analyzed. In addition, various tests are carried out depending on certain operating regimes of the ventilation system with heat recovery and aerothermal energy. As a final conclusion, results are obtained that serve to evaluate in a real, objective and transparent way, how new buildings with almost zero energy consumption can improve the indoor air quality of a home, under standard conditions of use, and how This improvement in air quality has a very positive impact on people's health.

Abstract: Fricke xylenol gelatin with glycine (FXGGly) as gel dosimeter was investigated for in vivo dosimetry at extended source-to-surface distance (eSSD) and validated with optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLD). FXGGly dosimeter was calibrated with a low dose rate of 10 cGy/min at eSSD and evaluated using anthropomorphic phantom simulating the actual treatment scenario. The FXGGly dosimeter was demonstrated as a suitable in vivo dosimeter for total body irradiation at eSSD with desirable dosimetric accuracy (± 2%) in comparison with OSLD or ionization chamber.

Abstract: The speed of the boat is greatly affected by different parameters considered in the environment. A boat without speed control system can be hazardous for it can lead to undesirable events such as engine breakdown or an accident. To mitigate these undesired incidents, a control system is proposed to sustain the boat's speed by automatically controlling the output power of the engine depending on varying factors such as wind speed, water current, and the total weight of the boat and payload. First, the needed variables are to be gathered thru instrumentation and research of the boat's specifications. Second, to find the relation boat between the variables on how they affect the speed of the boat and formulating a working equation that can determine the output power needed to maintain the speed of the boat. Third, is to implement the proposed control system by using the formulated equation in Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) software and last, to evaluate the resulting control system.

Abstract: Biomass generation systems using gasification technology can provide clean energy and can be a dependable source of power to complement the main power supply. Electricity price fixation has an important role in the power market. A generalized pricing method should take care of the demand variations and the market conditions. This article proposes a model for determining the price of electrical energy from biomass-based power plants considering operating constraints and the economic components that influence the electricity price. It incorporates the Clean Development Mechanism benefit, income from by-products, and penalty factors in addition to the economic components. The model developed is applied to a typical biomass gasifier generating unit in India for determining the electricity price.

Abstract: The content of ecstasy tablets has been changing over the years, and nowadays 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is not always present in the tablets. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition in the seized tablets labeled as ecstasy. We analyzed samples from 150 different seizures made by Sao Paulo's State Police by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. MDMA was present in 44.7% of the analyzed samples, and another twenty different active substances were identified in these tablets, such as caffeine, 2C-B, piperazines, amphetamines, phencyclidine, and others. Methamphetamine was present in 22% of these samples. The results demonstrate a huge shift in the pattern of trafficking of synthetic drugs, where MDMA has been replaced in tablets mostly by illicit psychoactive substances, in a clear attempt to bypass the law. The great variability in the tablets composition may lead to an increased risk of drug poisoning.

Abstract: —We present a forecasting strategy based onstationary wavelet transform combined with radial basis function(RBF) neural network to improve the accuracy of 3-month-aheadhake catches forecasting of the ﬁsheries industry in the centralsouthern Chile. The general idea of the proposed forecastingmodel is to decompose the raw data set into an annualcycle component and an inter-annual component by using3-levels stationary wavelet decomposition. The components areindependently predicted using an autoregressive RBF neuralnetwork model. The RBF neural network model is composedof linear and nonlinear weights, which are estimates usingthe separable nonlinear least squares method. Consequently,the proposed forecaster is the co-addition of two predictedcomponents. We demonstrate the utility of the proposed modelon hake catches data set for monthly periods from 1963 to2008. Experimental results on hake catches data show thatthe autoregressive RBF neural network model is effective for3-month-ahead forecasting.Index Terms—Neural network, forecasting, nonlinear leastsquares.

Abstract: The effect of two rearing systems on productive performance and level of wellbeing in broilers reared up to day 46 was assessed. The birds were subjected to two treatments: (T1) traditional rearing (open drinkers, population density of 10.7 birds/m and infrared light bulbs as heating source), with 4 repetitions 2 of 6 birds each and (T2) modern rearing (closed drinkers, population density of 13.8 birds/m and infrared 2 gas brooders as heating source) with 10 repetitions of 6 birds each. The birds were lodged in a n experimental house with semi controlled environment and reared according to the breed manual. Production variables that were measured weekly were: feed consumption, body weight, feed conversion and mortality; and finally carcass yield and pigmentation. Wellbeing variables that were measured were lesions in their footpad, hock, breast and walking gait; likewise, serum corticosterone levels were measured and adrenal tissue subjected to microscopic inspection. Results showed a favorable significant difference for T2 in feed consumption, body weight, pigmentation, carcass yield and corticosterone levels; but footpad lesions were found and these were statistically different. Histological changes were observed in adrenal glands. The results suggest that the modern rearing systems enhance better productivity; nevertheless, high population densities may be unfavorable for animal wellbeing.

16. The charophyte flora in a Ramsar Mediterranean wetland (Albufera de València Natural Park, Spain) during the period 2007-2010

Abstract: The Albufera de València Natural Park (AVNP) is an internationally recognised coastal region. With an area of 21000 ha, it is composed of a large lagoon surrounded by marshlands devoted to rice crops, a web of irrigation channels connecting the rice fields to the lagoon, small freshwater-tobrackish ponds patchily scattered throughout an area of sand dunes separating the lagoon from the sea, a set of springs and newly created artificial wetlands. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, the area was seriously affected by urbanisation, development of agriculture, industry, etc., and many of the indicated water bodies were destroyed. At present, managers have restored some of these aquatic ecosystems. Between 2007 and 2010 we visited 32 sites (six rice fields, 10 ponds, eight springs, four channels and four sites in two artificial wetlands) and studied the richness of charophyte species. In addition to macroalgae, we sampled sediments as well (searching for charophyte oospores and gyrogonites). Fifteen charophyte taxa were identified (Chara aspera, Ch. braunii, Ch. canescens, Ch. globularis, Ch. hispida var. baltica, Ch. hispida var. hispida, Ch. imperfecta, Ch.vulgaris var. contraria, Ch. vulgaris var. inconnexa, Ch. vulgaris var. longibracteata, Ch. vulgaris var. vulgaris, Lamprothamnium papulosum, Nitella hyalina, Tolypella glomerata and T. prolifera), 14 of them as growing specimens. Chara vulgaris was the most abundant taxon. Rice fields were one of the systems with the highest charophyte richness. Approximately 30% of the Iberian charophyte flora (46 taxa) and 58% of that in the province of Valencia (26 taxa) are represented within the AVNP. Eleven taxa of the genus Chara are present on the Iberian Peninsula, and seven of them were found within the limits of the AVNP. A comparison with charophyte richness in other West Mediterranean wetlands is also provided.

The mean age at presentation was 48.5 (range 38-64) years. All patients underwent conservative surgery, and radiotherapy to the entire breast (mean dose 50 Gy; range 46-52 Gy). AC-based regimens consisted of four cycles of AC (doxorubicin plus cyclophosphamide) or four cycles of epirubicin (EPI) followed by four courses of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil (CMF).Concomitant treatment caused acute skin G3 toxicity in 8.9% of patients and one case of G4 toxicity (1.7%). Concerning cardiac assessment, six of the 56 evaluable patients (10.7%) developed an asymptomatic decline of left ventricular ejection fraction10% and20% of the baseline value. Radiotherapy was temporarily stopped in 21.3% and chemotherapy in 57.1% of patients.In our experience, concomitant chemotherapy did not emerge as a significant factor in radiotherapy interruption. Moreover, no severe cardiac events were recorded.

Abstract: Renewable hybrid energy systems have great potential to provide high quality and more reliable power. This offers the advantage that the strengths of each type of sources can be used to complement one another. Renewable hybrid energy systems are mainly recognized for remote area power applications and are nowadays cost-effective where extension of grid supply is expensive. Biomass gasifier-based power generation has a lot of potential for power generation in India. In this article, optimal sizing and operation of a wind-biomass gasifier-based hybrid energy system is proposed. A case study is done using real-time load demand data collected from a site. Economic analysis of wind-biomass gasifier hybrid energy system is also presented. The cost of energy is found to be Rs 3.499 (US$0.078). The cost of energy of the wind-biomass system is also compared with the wind-diesel system. It is found that economically, the wind-gasifier system is a very good alternative for wind-diesel system.

Abstract: The dendrometer has been proposed as a sensitive plant water indicator based on stem growth. However, studies including dendrometers have been mainly focused on fruit trees and less attention has been paid to ornamental shrubs (small plants). In the study described here, stem dendrometers were used to ascertain whether there is any relationship between water status and dendrometric indices in potted ornamental shrubs (1 to 2 cm diameter). For this purpose, three Mediterranean shrubs (Pittosporum tobira, Callistemon citrinus, and Rhamnus alaternus) were studied under water stress recovery conditions in winter, spring, and early summer. At the end of the experiment, an extreme water stress treatment, which resulted in plant death (August) was also studied. Stem diameter variations [maximum and minimum daily stem values (MXDS and MNDS, respectively), maximum daily shrinkage (MDS), and stem growth rate (SGR)], daily evapotranspiration (daily plant ET), and leaf water potential (Ψleaf) parameters were considered throughout the experiment. A regression analysis between dendrometric indices and daily plant ET showed that MXDS and MNDS were sensitive under water stress recovery conditions, especially in severe environmental conditions (spring and summer). The SGR in C. citrinus, the MDS in P. tobira, and both indices in R. alaternus were seen to be sensitive during the stress to death period. Although more studies are needed, the results confirm that the use of dendrometers in small plants may be useful to provide continuous and automated registers of the plant water status under different substrate water content and climatic conditions. However, the response of these indices may imply moderate water stress.

It is also proposed to maintain a fair level of energy storage to meet the peak load demand together with biomass, wind, and solar photovoltaic during low or no solar radiation periods or during low wind periodsA case study was completed using load data collected from three villages (300 km south of Chennai, India). Simulations carried out for a one-year period proved the effectiveness of the developed energy management system by satisfying the load demand, nonlinear seasonal variations, and equipment constraints. Abstract: Aims: This study aimed to determine the effect of packaging [air, modified atmosphere (MA)] on microbial growth, sensory and chemical parameters and also on shelf life of fresh pearl spot (Etroplus suratensis Bloch) and on the selection of microbial association. Methods and Results: Fresh pearl spot (whole, gutted) were packaged under both 100% air and MAs (40%CO2/60% O2, 50%CO2/50%O2, 60% CO2/40%O2, 70% CO2/30% O2 and 40% CO2/30% O2/30% N2) and stored at 0°C. Microbial growth (counts of total aerobic bacteria, H2S–producing bacteria, Lactic acid bacteria, Brochothrix thermosphacta, yeast and mould), chemical spoilage indicators (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen) and sensory characteristics were monitored. Microbial changes in Pearl spot packed under 100% air and 40% CO2/30%O2/30% N2 were similar. The total volatile basic nitrogen values increased, but the values never exceeded the acceptability limit of 25 mg 100 g−1. Conclusions: MA 60% CO2 : 40%O2 was found to be better with a shelf life of 21 days whereas air stored samples had a shelf-life of 12–14 days only. Significance and Impact of the Study: Storage of pearl spot under MAs 60% CO2 : 40%O2 is a promising method to extend shelf-life. Longer shelf life expands the market potential of pearl spot and reduces waste during distribution and retail display.

Abstract: The mechanisms involved in the digestive process of the rumen are complex, and are accomplished by a diverse and dynamic group of microbes. Microbial diversity in the rumen has been predicted to enhance the resistance of the network of metabolic pathways by increasing the number of genes encoding the pathway, enabling the ecosystem to stabilize more rapidly after change to a new equilibrium. The more resistant metabolic pathways, and the more diverse source of novel pathways, will make the microbial system more resilient. A variety of molecular methods based on direct isolation and analysis of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids from environmental samples have been discovered, and they reveal structural and functional information about microbial communities. Molecular approaches such as genetic fingerprinting, metagenomics, meta proteomics, metatranscriptomics and proteogenomics are vital for discovering and characterizing the vast diversity of microbes and understanding their interactions with biotic and abiotic environmental factors. In this chapter, efforts are made to discover the possible applications of metagenomic tools for exploring the complex microbial diversity of ruminal microbes.

Abstract: Efficient monitoring and automatic control systems for biological wastewater treatment processes, especially those dealing with bioinhibitory pollutants, such as phenol, are urgently required in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Practical on-line sensors of variables that describe water quality, such as BOD or individual toxic pollutants such as phenol, are not commercially available; e.g. phenol is generally monitored off-line by spectrofluorometry. Inference software sensors could be an attractive alternative for on-line monitoring of these variables. As a first step towards the development of inferential sensors for biological wastewater treatment processes, we consider in this study, a simplistic version of such a process which consists of a continuous culture of Pseudomonas putida Q5 degrading phenol. In this work, we propose a neural network based inferential sensor for phenol monitoring using on-line biomass concentration measurements by spectrophotometry. The network was built with wavelets as the basis functions and the adaptive algorithm for the weights was based on a Lyapunov stability analysis. Predicted phenol output of the network showed good agreement with experimental data, over fairly broad ranges of inlet phenol concentration and dilution rate step changes. Simulations were conducted to find convergence conditions and to investigate possible sources for errors in phenol estimates. Des capteurs de variables montes en ligne pratiques decrivant la qualite de l'eau, comme la DBO ou differents polluants toxiques comme le phenol, ne sont pas disponibles dans le commerce, le phenol etant generalement surveille par des systemes non montes en ligne par la spectrofluorometrie. Les capteurs logiciels a inference pourraient etre une solution attrayante pour la surveillance en ligne de ces variables. Comme premiere etape vers la mise au point de capteurs inferentiels pour des procedes de traitement des eaux usees biologiques, nous considerons dans cette etude une version simplifiee d'un tel procede qui consiste en une culture continue de Pseudomonas putida Q5 degradant le phenol. Dans ce travail, nous proposons un capteur inferentiel base sur un reseau neuronal pour la surveillance du phenol utilisant des mesures de concentration de biomasse en ligne par spectrophotometrie. Le reseau a ete bâti avec des ondelettes comme fonctions de base, et l'algorithme adaptatif pour les ponderations a ete base sur une analyse de stabilite de Lyapunov. La reponse en phenol predit par le reseau montre un bon accord avec les donnees experimentales, dans des gammes assez larges de concentration de phenol en entree et de modifications en echelon de la vitesse de dilution. Des simulations ont ete effectuees pour trouver des conditions de convergence et etudier les sources possibles d'erreurs dans les estimations de phenol.

Long-run equilibrium relationships between the cash conversion cycle, a measure of ongoing liquidity management, and alternative measures of profitability are tested using both nonparametric and multiple regression analysis. Industry and size differences are controlled. While there are exceptions to the general finding for specific firms and for specific industries, the paper offers strong evidence that aggressive working-capital policies enhance profitability.

Abstract: In this paper a decoupled reference generation algorithm for harmonic, reactive power and current unbalance compensation is presented. The proposed method has the advantage that it generates the reference for compensation which is immune to supply voltage distortions and ensures that the source has to deliver only the fundamental active component of the load current. It also ensures that the source current after compensation is balanced and at unity power factor. Matlab simulation of the proposed method and a comparison of reference generation by the existing methods have been done and presented in this paper for establishing the validity and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract: Solar energy is emerging as a major source of renewable power in India due to government support. One of the key issues with renewable energy generation is that there is no generalized pricing method and each utility uses a different method for pricing energy. The proposed model gives a generalized method for determining energy price for generating companies, independent power producers, regulatory commissions etc. It incorporates both the economic and performance based factors related to power quality and reliability issues. Also a penalty for deviation from scheduled energy and CDM benefit are included in the model. The study explores average daily solar radiation and the power output of a typical solar generator of 20kW capacity operating in the state of TamilNadu, India. The model developed is applied to this 20kW solar generator for determining the electricity price. The co-relation between energy price and technical and economic parameters is explored. A comparison between the electricity price from the proposed model and the levelized cost is done.

Abstract: The objective of global optimality versus the cost that this implies is an unresolved issue by researchers. Classical problems such as Travel Salesman Problem (TSP) or Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) and it’s derivatives, relate to combinatorial optimization problems that arise on an everyday basis for a group of people that would like to have the solution to such problems as soon as possible. Thus, the idea that such problems purely operational, would be solved by heuristics in devices makes sense, due to the interest of normal use for sellers or car's drivers. Within the framework of what we may call ubiquitous distributed computing, this paper proposes an BDI architecture that supports the resolution of problems in complex combinatorial mobile devices across heuristics or metaheuristics embedded in the devices themselves and working from a set of data from a central server using agents for coordination and collaboration.

Abstract: Background: Malaria represents one of the most important infectious disease threats to deployed military forces; most personnel from developed countries are nonimmune personnel and are at high risk of infection and clinical malaria. This is especially true for forces deployed to highly-endemic areas in Africa and Southeast Asia where drug-resistant malaria is common. Methods: We conducted an outbreak investigation of malaria cases in Angola where a total of 439 nonimmune Brazilian troops were deployed for a 6-month period in 1995–1996. A post-travel medical evaluation was also performed on 338 (77%) of the 439 soldiers upon return to Brazil. Questionnaire, medical record, thick/thin smear, and serum anti-Plasmodium falciparum antibody titer (by IFA) data were obtained. Peak serum mefloquine (M) and methylmefloquine (MM) metabolite levels were measured in a subsample of 66 soldiers (42 cases, 24 nonmalaria controls) who were taking weekly mefloquine prophylaxis (250 mg). Results: Seventy-eight cases of malaria occurred among the 439 personnel initially interviewed in Angola (attack rate = 18%). Four soldiers were hospitalized, and 3 subsequently died of cerebral malaria. Upon return to Brazil, 63 (19%) of 338 soldiers evaluated were documented to have had clinical symptoms and a diagnosis of malaria while in Angola. In addition, 37 (11%) asymptomatically infected individuals were detected upon return (< 1% parasitemia). Elevated, post-travel anti-P. falciparum IFA titers (≥ 1:64) were seen in 101 (35%) of 292 soldiers tested, and was associated with a prior history of malaria in-country (OR = 3.67, 95% CI 1.98–6.82, p < .001). Noncompliance with weekly mefloquine prophylaxis (250 mg) was associated with a malaria diagnosis in Angola (OR = 3.75, 95% CI 0.97–17.41, p = .03) but not with recent P. falciparum infection (by IFA titer). Mean peak levels (and ratios) of serum M and MM were also found to be lower in those who gave a history of malaria while in Angola. Conclusions: Malaria was a significant cause of morbidity among Brazilian Army military personnel deployed to Angola. Mefloquine prophylaxis appeared to protect soldiers from clinical, but not subclinical, P. falciparum infections. Mefloquine noncompliance and an erratic chemoprophylaxis prevention policy contributed to this large outbreak in nonimmune personnel. This report highlights the pressing need for development of newer, more efficacious and practical, prophylactic drug regimens that will reduce the malaria threat to military forces and travelers.

Abstract: The information explosion has created a need for large, flat hang-on-the-wall displays to display the ever increasing quantity of information. Rapid advances in computing power and communication technology are outpacing the advances in display technology. Typical monitors have progressed from VGA with 0.3 M pixels, to SXGA with 1.3 M pixels. Top of the line displays are pushing 4 M pixels. Costs of displays with increased number of pixels have risen exponentially with pixel count. Display technology is limiting the exploitation of advances in information and communications technologies. A revolutionary new display technology is needed to enable practical use of the information and communications revolutions. The Sarnoff Corporation and Cambridge Display Technology Ltd. are developing a modular display approach for thin hang-on-the- wall displays that has a cost structure that is linear with pixel count. This approach is based on three display technology advances: smart block matrix addressing, light emitting polymers (LEP), and integrated packaging. Smart block matrix addressing enables the use of low cost addressing while at the same time decoupling the display performance from display size. LEP materials enable low manufacturing cost for bright emissive thin display modules. Integrated packaging enables the mass production of low cost display modules that can be assembled into large area, seamless displays. Together, these three technologies produce for the first time a thin scaleable display. The displays made using this technology have been named 'Array Displays.' Array Display size and shape are determined at assembly, not by the manufacturing line, Pixel densities of about one million pixels per square meter are possible with this low cost manufacturing approach. Abstract: North Kerala is a high risk area for carcinoma stomach. Therefore, 'intestinal type' carcinoma of Lauren is more prevalent here and the disease occur even in people below the age of 40. An attempt is made to analyse various risk factors in 70 patients who had undergone gastrectomy for carcinoma stomach in Medical College Hospital, Calicut. The population study revealed no relationship between the disease and the various religious communities. Diet is found to be the most important potential environmental influence. Even though both males and females share the same type of diet, males are found to be more affected by the disease. The high frequency of female population in North Kerala with a low frequency of carcinoma stomach in them, suggests the possible role of smoking and alcohol abuse in males. The blood group profile of healthy population in North Kerala and that of the patients show that people with blood group A have a differential susceptability to gastric carcinoma. Age and chewing of tobacco were the other factors involved.

50. Gaucher's disease among Mappila Muslims of Malabar

Abstract: Seven cases of Gaucher's disease admitted in Medical College, Calicut, Kerala State, were studied. All cases were classified as Type I (adult) Gaucher's disease. Splenomegaly was the consistent feature. Routine hemogram and liver function tests were within normal range. Bone marrow smears and liver biopsies were studied. Bone marrow smears showed typical Gaucher cells. In liver biopsy storage cells were seen as scattered foci in sinusoids. One case showed diffuse distribution affecting all zones. All cases belonged to distinct community called Mappila Muslims of Malabar which account for only 35 percent of the population in Malabar region, situated in the northern part of Kerala. Type I Gaucher's disease has a well known racial predilection reported in Askenazi Jews. Mappila Muslims of Malabar may be another such group. This is the largest series of cases to be published in India seen in one particular community.
