Abstract

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A_T′ in ^3He(e,e′) quasielastic scattering in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory with high precision for Q^2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)^2. The neutron magnetic form factor GMn was extracted based on Faddeev calculations for Q^2 = 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)^2 with an experimental uncertainty of less than 2%.

Abstract

The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q2) has been extracted in the range 0.7≤Q2≤6.0(GeV/c)2 from cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in coincidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are compared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimensional scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract

The first measurements of the differential cross section for the d(gamma,p)n reaction up to 4.0 GeV were performed at Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. We report the cross sections at the proton center-of-mass angles of 36, 52, 69 and 89 degrees. These results are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements at lower energy. The 89 and 69 degree data show constituent-counting-rule behavior up to 4.0 GeV photon energy. The 36 and 52 degree data disagree with the counting rule behavior. The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model of nuclear reactions involving reduced amplitudes disagrees with the present data., Comment: 5 pages (REVTeX), 1 figure (postscript)

Abstract

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P{sub LL}-P{sub TT}/epsilon and P{sub LT}, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha{sub E}(Q{sup 2}) and beta{sub M}(Q{sup 2}) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q{sup 2} = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV{sup 2}. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q{sup 2}-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Abstract

Experimental studies of fundamental structure of nucleons require an electron-ion collider of a center-of- mass energy up to 90 GeV at luminosity up to 1035 cm-2 s-1 with both beams polarized. A CEBAF-based collider of 9 GeV electrons/positrons and 225 GeV ions is envisioned to meet this science need and as a next step for CEBAF after the planned 12 GeV energy upgrade of the fixed target program. A ring-ring scheme of this collider developed recently takes advantage of the existing polarized electron CW beam from the CEBAF and a green-field design of an ion complex with electron cooling. We present a conceptual design and report design studies of this high-luminosity collider.

Abstract

We have measured the transverse asymmetry A{sub T{sup '}} in the quasielastic {sup 3}He-vector(e-vector,e{sup '}) process with high precision at Q{sup 2} values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The neutron magnetic form factor G{sub M}{sup n} was extracted at Q{sup 2} values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c){sup 2} using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of {sup 3}He-vector(e-vector,e{sup '}). We also extracted the neutron magnetic form factor G{sub M}{sup n} at Q{sup 2} values of 0.3 to 0.6 (GeV/c){sup 2} based on plane wave impulse approximation calculations.

Abstract

The ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, GEp/GMp, was obtained by measuring Pt and P, the transverse and longitudinal recoil proton polarization components, respectively, for the elastic epepreaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5 GeV2. In the single-photon exchange approximation, GEp/GMp is directly proportional to Pt/P. The simultaneous measurement of Pt and P in a polarimeter reduces systematic uncertainties. The results for GEp/GMp show a systematic decrease with increasing Q2, indicating for the first time a definite difference in the distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton. The data have been reanalyzed and their systematic uncertainties have become significantly smaller than those reported previously. (Less)

Abstract

We have built a high-DC-voltage photoemission gun and a diagnostic beamline permitting us to measure rms transverse emittance (/spl epsi//spl tilde//sub x/) and rms momentum spread (/spl delta/) of short-duration electron pulses produced by illuminating the cathode with light from a mode-locked, frequency-doubled Nd:YLF laser. The electron gun is a GaAs photocathode source designed to operate at 500 kV. We have measured /spl epsi//spl tilde//sub x/ and /spl delta/ for conditions ranging from emittance-dominated to space-charge-dominated. We report these measurements as functions of microbunch charge for different beam radii, pulse lengths, and voltages/field gradients at the cathode, and compare them with PARMELA calculations.

Abstract

CEBAF has developed a comprehensive conceptual design of an industrial user facility based on a kilowatt UV (150-1000 nm) and IR (2-25 micron) FEL driven by a recirculating, energy-recovering 200 MeV superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerator. FEL users-CEBAF's partners in the Laser Processing Consortium, including AT&T, DuPont, IBM, Northrop-Grumman, 3M, and Xerox-plan to develop applications such as polymer surface processing, metals and ceramics micromachining, and metal surface processing, with the overall effort leading to later scale-up to industrial systems at 50-100 kW. Representative applications are described. The proposed high-average-power FEL overcomes limitations of conventional laser sources in available power, cost-effectiveness, tunability and pulse structure.

Abstract

A 10 MeV high-charge CW electron injector test stand has been designed for the CEBAF UV FEL driver accelerator. It consists of a 500 kV DC photocathode gun, a 1500 MHz room-temperature buncher, a modified CEBAF cryounit (quarter cryomodule) with an SRF accelerating gradient of /spl sim/10 MV/m, two solenoids in the 500 kV region and an achromatic, non-isochronous injection transport line delivering 10 MeV beam to the driver accelerator. Experimental work is in progress toward establishing design system performance.

Abstract

The first $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ polarization transfer measurements on a nucleus heavier than deuterium have been carried out at Jefferson Laboratory. Transverse and longitudinal components of the polarization of protons ejected in the reaction ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ were measured in quasielastic perpendicular kinematics at a ${Q}^{2}$ of 0.8 $(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The data are in good agreement with state of the art calculations.

Abstract

We measured the cross section and response functions for the quasielastic 16O(e,e'p) reaction for missing energies 25or =E(m)or =120 MeV at missing momenta P(m)or =340 MeV/c. For 25E(m)50 MeV and P(m) approximately 60 MeV/c, the reaction is dominated by a single 1s(1/2) proton knockout. At larger P(m), the single-particle aspects are increasingly masked by more complicated processes. Calculations which include pion exchange currents, isobar currents, and short-range correlations account for the shape and the transversity, but for only half of the magnitude of the measured cross section.

Abstract

The differential cross section for ^2H(γ,d)π^0 has been measured at deuteron center-of-mass angles of 90° and 136°. This work reports the first data for this reaction above a photon energy of 1 GeV, and permits a test of the apparent constituent counting rule and reduced nuclear amplitude behavior as observed in elastic ed scattering. Measurements were performed up to a photon energy of 4.0 GeV, and are in good agreement with previous lower energy measurements. Overall, the data are inconsistent with both constituent-counting rule and reduced nuclear amplitude predictions.

Abstract

A test stand for the 10 MeV, 5 mA average current injector for the CEBAF FEL is currently under construction. The injector tests will progress through two phases. The first phase will be devoted to characterizing the gun transverse and longitudinal emittance performance as a function of bunch charge, beam size, and energy. The goal of the second phase is to achieve the nominal requirements of the 10 MeV injector, including bunch length, emittance, charge per bunch, and energy stability. This paper summarizes the diagnostics planned to be used in these experiments.

Abstract

Previously we presented a design for a kiloWatt demonstration industrial UV FEL. Progress has been made in resolving several design issues identified in that work. More exact simulations of the injector have resulted in a better estimate of the injector performance. A more compact lattice has been designed meeting the design requirements for the UV FEL, and a new design point has been studied which greatly increases the threshold for longitudinal instabilities. A stability analysis of the RF control system has found that only minor modifications from existing CEBAF controls will be necessary to allow them to be used with a high-current, energy-recovery accelerator. Designs for the optical cavity length and figure systems have been conceptualized and a model of the corner-cube resonator is being built and tested. Finally, three-dimensional simulations of the FEL have been carried out which show that the laser should exceed its minimum design goals for average power. Abstract

Monitoring of 25 first cadaver transplant recipients was carried out weekly after transplantation. A total of 441 sera were tested from these patients against B and T lymphocytes at 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C for development of cytotoxic antibodies. Thirteen of the 25 patients (52%) developed B-cold antibodies as their first antibodies and all had functioning kidneys. Five of the patients developed B-warm antibodies initially, and all 5 rejected their transplants within 24 days. Of the seven patients who did not develop antibodies, 3 rejected their kidneys within 72 days. We conclude that it is important to distinguish between two types of antibodies to B lymphocytes--those reactive in the cold and those reactive in the warm--since they have opposite effects. Of the 17 successful grafts, 13 first developed B-cold cytotoxins.

Abstract

The first measurements of differential cross sections for deuteron photo-disintegration at photon energies up to 4 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility early in 1996. Cross section results for D(γ,p)n at proton center of mass angle of 35°, 53° and 90° will be presented. These results are in good agreement with previous measurements at low energy and extend to higher energies where data were previously unavailable. The 90° degree data show behavior consistent with the constituent counting rules up to 4 GeV and are also in fair agreement with the asymptotic meson exchange model. The 37° and 53° data do not show clear signs of counting rule behavior, although a threshold in transverse momentum for the onset of scaling cannot be excluded.
