1. Work function and energy level alignment tuning at Ti3C2Tx MXene surfaces and interfaces using metal organic donor acceptor molecules

Abstract: Two dimensional MXenes, with Ti3C2Tx being the most prominent member, show properties that make them promising for a manifold of applications, including electrodes in light emitting diodes, solar cells, and field effect transistors based on organic semiconductors. In these cases, the work function of MXenes plays an important role in the energy level alignment to the subsequently deposited organic layer, as it determines the electron and hole injection barriers. Therefore, methods for controlling the Ti3C2Tx work function should be developed. We demonstrate that, by using thin layers of metal organic donor acceptor molecules, the work function of Ti3C2Tx can be tuned over a range of gt;3 eV. This enables tuning the energy level alignment to a subsequently deposited organic semiconductor, all the way from intrinsic Fermi level pinning at the highest occupied molecular energy level minimal hole injection barrier to pinning at the lowest unoccupied level minimal electron injection barrier . Furthermore, it is shown that a predominantly oxygen terminated surface does not lead to an extraordinary high work function, in contrast to theoretical predictions. The proposed strategy may greatly expand the use of MXenes in conjunction with organic hole and electron transport layers in optoelectronic devices

3. Type I Energy Level Alignment at the PTCDA Monolayer MoS2 Interface Promotes Resonance Energy Transfer and Luminescence Enhancement

Abstract: Van der Waals heterostructures consisting of 2D semiconductors and conjugated molecules are of increasing interest because of the prospect of a synergistic enhancement of opto electronic properties. In particular, perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride PTCDA on monolayer ML MoS2 has been identified as promising candidate and a staggered type II energy level alignment and excited state interfacial charge transfer have been proposed. In contrast, it is here found with inverse and direct angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy that PTCDA ML MoS2 supported by insulating sapphire exhibits a straddling type I level alignment, with PTCDA having the wider energy gap. Photoluminescence PL and sub picosecond transient absorption measurements reveal that resonance energy transfer, i.e., electron hole pair exciton transfer, from PTCDA to ML MoS2 occurs on a sub picosecond time scale. This gives rise to an enhanced PL yield from ML MoS2 in the heterostructure and an according overall modulation of the photoresponse. These results underpin the importance of a precise knowledge of the interfacial electronic structure in order to understand excited state dynamics and to devise reliable design strategies for optimized optoelectronic functionality in van der Waals heterostructures

4. Orientation Dependent Work Function Modification Using Substituted Pyrene Based Acceptors

Abstract: The adsorption of molecular acceptors is a viable method for tuning the work function of metal electrodes. This, in turn, enables adjusting charge injection barriers between the electrode and organic semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the potential of pyrene-tetraone (PyT) and its derivatives dibromopyrene-tetraone (Br-PyT) and dinitropyrene-tetraone (NO2-PyT) for modifying the electronic properties of Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces. The systems are investigated by complementary theoretical and experimental approaches, including photoelectron spectroscopy, the X-ray standing wave technique, and density functional theory simulations. For some of the investigated interfaces the trends expected for Fermi-level pinning are observed, i.e., an increase of the metal work function along with increasing molecular electron affinity and the same work function for Au and Ag with monolayer acceptor coverage. Substantial deviations are, however, found for Br-PyT/Ag(111) and NO2-PyT/Ag(111), where in the latter case an adsorption-induced work function increase of as much as 1.6 eV is observed. This behavior is explained as arising from a face-on to edge-on reorientation of molecules in the monolayer. Our calculations show that for an edge-on orientation much larger work-function changes can be expected despite the prevalence of Fermi-level pinning. This is primarily ascribed to a change of the electron affinity of the adsorbate layer that results from a change of the molecular orientation. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of how changing the molecular electron affinity as well as the adsorbate structure impacts the electronic properties of electrodes.

Abstract: The detection of dimers of dimers in MHC class II crystals has excited speculation about their possible functions in T cell Ag recognition. Biochemical evidence for the existence of DR superdimers falls short of proof and is controversial. To monitor B lymphoma cells for high m.w. complexes of HLA-DR molecules, membrane preparations and cell lysates were screened by one- and two-dimensional Western blotting. Under these conditions, in which DRαβ heterodimers were readily detected, no DR complexes with an (αβ)2-chain composition could be identified. Two mAbs (L243 and D1-12) immunoprecipitated high m.w. DR complexes suspected to be superdimers. However, biochemical analysis revealed that, rather than superdimers, these were SDS-stable complexes of DR in combination with the Abs. Thus, previous observations of HLA-DR superdimer bands may also reflect complexes of DR molecules with bound Ab.

Abstract: We study the adsorption geometry of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(111) and Cu(111) using X-ray standing waves. The element-specific analysis shows that the carbon core of the molecule adsorbs in a planar configuration, whereas the oxygen atoms experience a non-trivial and substrate dependent distortion. On copper (silver) the carbon rings resides 2.66 A (2.86 A) above the substrate. In contrast to the conformation on Ag(111), where the carboxylic oxygen atoms are bent towards the surface, we find that on Cu(111) all oxygen atoms are above the carbon plane at 2.73 A and 2.89 A, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure pages, 2 tables

Abstract: Methodologies for the engineering of Web applications typically provide models that drive the generation of the hypermedia navigation structure in the application. Most of these methodologies and their models consider link following as the only materialization of the navigation structure. In this paper we see how extended user input can dynamically influence the navigation structure. By means of Hera it is shown how one can define this extended user input and capture the functional aspects related to the hypermedia dynamics in the RDF(S)-based design models. For this purpose we discuss the definition of input controls, the representation of state information, and the embedding of both in the application model. We also present the XML/RDF-based architecture implementing this.

Abstract: The expression of the H2 Ia-associated invariant chain (Ii) has been determined by pulse labeling cells with [35S]methionine and resolving the proteins. Expression is maximal in noncycling peripheral B lymphocytes and is reduced upon maturation of B lymphocytes to plasma cells. B cell-derived cell lines behave correspondingly: IgM+ non-secretor cell lines synthesize Ii while plasmocytoma cells do not. Pre-B cell lines are also negative. In all Ii-negative cell lines, the synthesis of Ii is selectively induced by treating the cells with inhibitors of replication.

Abstract: This article addresses the control of a Multistage Stacked Boost Architecture (MSBA) feeding a five-level NPC inverter in a grid-tied application. A suitable control strategy was previously presented, in which estimated/reconstructed intermediary currents are used as feed-forward signals for the voltage controllers that balance the intermediate busses. While the reconstruction of the intermediary currents from the measured output current is easy to implement when the instantaneous switching signals of the NPC inverters are known, the real-time implementation on a digital controller must cope with the fact that these switching signals are generally not available at the base interrupt rate, but are usually generated in a peripheral unit, typically an FPGA-based modulator. The present paper describes an estimation/reconstruction method that overcomes this limitation and allows an appropriate estimation of the intermediary currents at the base sampling rate. The quality of the estimated signals is presented and analysed through comparisons of the measured and the estimated signals.

Abstract: Association of invariant chain with class II molecules has been suggested to inhibit binding of peptides that are available while the class II complex is present in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and subsequently transported to endosomes. We tested HLA-DR-transfected rat2 fibroblast cells lacking expression of invariant chain for their ability to form SDS stable class II dimers indicative of peptide binding in the class II cavity. No SDS-resistant class II dimers originating from short pulse-labeled immunoprecipitates can be identified. Prolonged ER retention of DR polypeptides by Brefeldin A treatment does not induce any stable class II dimers. In pulse-chase experiments, heat labile class II dimers are readily detectable after a 60-min chase, increasing in amounts by 4 h of chase. In vitro incubation of rat2DR cell lysate with DR3-binding peptides converts pulse-labeled class II molecules to SDS-resistant dimers. This indicates the ability of ER-resident DR dimers to bind peptides. Inhibition studies were conducted to define the intracellular site where stable class II complexes are formed in rat2DR cells. The lysosomotropic reagent chloroquine abrogates the appearance of SDS-resistant DR complexes in invariant chain-free rat2DR cells, which is consistent with the impact of chloroquine on peptide loading in other APCs. Leupeptin treatment strongly reduces the amount of heat-labile class II molecules but does not impair peptide loading when DR3-specific peptides were added to viable cells or to cell lysates. This result suggests that leupeptin inhibits intracellular degradation of polypeptides and thereby depletes the endocytic pathway of peptides available for class II binding.

25. Emerging Citizenship Regimes and Rescaling (European) Nation-States: Algorithmic, Liquid, Metropolitan and Stateless Citizenship Ideal Types

Abstract: This chapter examines how state spaces throughout Europe are facing structural tensions as traditional ethnic nationalism increasingly comes into conflict with urban transformations. It argues that European citizenship is experiencing a unique set of city-regional and techno-political dynamics consisting of: (1) geotechnologics (driven by blockchain), (2) geopolitics (driven by dataism; the ideology of the Big Data’s determinism), (3) geoeconomics (driven by populism) and (4) geodemocratics (driven by devolution). Given these tensions and their associated claimed rights, how will nation-states evolve? Will the urban age reconfigure the politics of nation-states through new and emerging citizenship regimes? Specifically, will the EU evolve towards a post-national polity from a platform of established nation-states? Or will the EU head for a city-regionalised federal network of nations determined voluntarily and democratically? The chapter develops the concept of emerging citizenship regimes as a new theoretical framework for thinking about state rescaling by proposing four ideal types of citizenship: algorithmic, liquid, metropolitan and stateless. It challenges the existing interpretation of how current citizenship regimes are transforming the city-regional and techno-political configuration of European nation-states.

Abstract: The plasma cell membrane antigen PC-1 and the receptor for the iron transport protein transferrin are high m.w., developmentally regulated proteins consisting of two similar or identical disulfide-bonded subunits. In this paper, we report the results of a serologic and biochemical analysis of these proteins in various strains of inbred mice, and in rats and hamsters. A monoclonal antibody against the PC-1a allelic product is shown to detect an antigenic determinant on the PC-1 molecule that has the same strain distribution as the antigen previously detected with polyclonal alloantisera. The mouse PC-1 protein was purified from plasma cells of the PC-1a genotype and was used to generate polyclonal rabbit anti-PC-1 antibodies. These antibodies precipitated a homologous protein from plasmacytoma cells derived from PC-1- congenic mice, demonstrating that PC-1b is not a "null" allele. The PC-1b allelic product had a slightly lower apparent m.w. than the PC-1a product, and had a slightly more basic isoelectric point. Rabbit anti-mouse PC-1 antibodies also precipitated a homologous protein from immunoglobulin-secreting cells of rat and hamster origin, but did not show detectable cross-reaction with the transferrin receptor. Disulfide bonding between chains was conserved in both PC-1 and the transferrin receptor in all species examined, but transferrin receptors from mouse cells had a significantly higher apparent m.w. than those of rat, hamster, or human cells.

Abstract: Current model-driven Web Engineering approaches (such as OO-H, UWE or WebML) provide a set of methods and supporting tools for a systematic design and development of Web applications. Each method addresses different concerns using separate models (content, navigation, presentation, business logic, etc.), and provide model compilers that produce most of the logic and Web pages of the application from these models. However, these proposals also have some limitations, especially for exchanging models or representing further modeling concerns, such as architectural styles, technology independence, or distribution. A possible solution to these issues is provided by making model-driven Web Engineering proposals interoperate, being able to complement each other, and to exchange models between the different tools. MDWEnet is a recent initiative started by a small group of researchers working on model-driven Web Engineering (MDWE). Its goal is to improve current practices and tools for the model-driven development of Web applications for better interoperability. The proposal is based on the strengths of current model-driven Web Engineering methods, and the existing experience and knowledge in the field. This paper presents the background, motivation, scope, and objectives of MDWEnet. Furthermore, it reports on the MDWEnet results and achievements so far, and its future plan of actions.

Abstract: This chapter examines how state spaces throughout Europe are facing structural tensions as traditional ethnic nationalism increasingly comes into conflict with urban transformations. It argues that European citizenship is experiencing a unique set of city-regional and techno-political dynamics consisting of: (1) geotechnologics (driven by blockchain), (2) geopolitics (driven by dataism, the ideology of big data’s determinism), (3) geoeconomics (driven by populism), and (4) geodemocratics (driven by devolution). Given these tensions and their associated claimed rights, how will nation-states evolve? Will the urban age reconfigure the politics of nation-states through new and emerging citizenship regimes? Specifically, will the European Union evolve towards a post-national polity from a platform of established nation-states? Or will it head for a city-regionalized federal network of nations determined voluntarily and democratically? The chapter develops the concept of emerging citizenship regimes as a new theoretical framework for thinking about state rescaling by proposing four ideal types of citizenship: algorithmic, liquid, metropolitan and stateless. It challenges the existing interpretation of how current citizenship regimes are transforming the city-regional and techno-political configuration of European nation-states.

Abstract: Perovskite solar cells are among the most exciting photovoltaic systems as they combine low recombination losses, ease of fabrication, and high spectral tunability. The Achilles heel of this technology is the device stability due to the ionic nature of the perovskite crystal, rendering it highly hygroscopic, and the extensive diffusion of ions especially at increased temperatures. Herein, we demonstrate the application of a simple solution-processed perfluorinated self-assembled monolayer (p-SAM) that not only enhances the solar cell efficiency, but also improves the stability of the perovskite absorber and, in turn, the solar cell under increased temperature or humid conditions. The p-i-n-type perovskite devices employing these SAMs exhibited power conversion efficiencies surpassing 21%. Notably, the best performing devices are stable under standardized maximum power point operation at 85 °C in inert atmosphere (ISOS-L-2) for more than 250 h and exhibit superior humidity resilience, maintaining ∼95% device performance even if stored in humid air in ambient conditions over months (∼3000 h, ISOS-D-1). Our work, therefore, demonstrates a strategy towards efficient and stable perovskite solar cells with easily deposited functional interlayers.

Abstract: This paper discusses a methodological approach to define quality models (QM) for Web sites of any kind, including Web 2.0 sites. The approach stresses the practical use of a QM, in requirement definition and quality assessment, during design & development processes or during site operation. An important requirement for such QMs is organization mapping, which allows who is in charge of quality management to easily identify the actors in the organization responsible for implementing or improving each specific quality characteristic. A family of QMs is proposed and compared with ISO/IEC 25010 QMs for software products and software-intensive computer systems.

Abstract: In recent years numerous Web application modeling languages have been developed and others improved. There has, however, been little research on how these languages may be simulated. Simulation of models constructed using design languages allows early evaluation and prevents unnecessary Web code development and implementation. It can therefore significantly reduce the design cycle time and cost. This paper introduces a Web application simulation model framework that was designed to be compatible with existing modeling languages. This was accomplished by specifically identifying the objectives of a simulation language and contrasting this with those of design models. The simulation model supports analysis of simulations from four key Web application perspectives (and hence the model is constructed around these perspectives) namely: presentation, navigation, functionality and content. We argue that with this approach substantial inferences about the quality of the design can be drawn from simulation of the Web application model.
