This paper presents an instance of a web-based stand-alone simulation game aimed at teaching electricity market subjects. The main objectives of this version of the electricity makets game (EmGA) platform are to introduce players/students to the short-term electricity market structure and to highlight the importance of forecasting tools in decision-making. A hypothetical situation has been carefully designed using historical data, where each player takes the role of a wind farm owner willing to participate in the day-ahead electricity market to maximize its economic profit. Players are asked to submit hourly energy bids which are then compared to the wind farm's actual energy production and mapped to revenue by basic market rules for price-taker participants. Preliminary student feedback reinforces the potential of the EmGA platform for improving the teaching of electricity market subjects, showing a general acceptance and a perception of improved knowledge reception of more than 77%.

The floating potential of a probe, emitting a sufficiently high electron current, yields a fairly accurate approximation of the plasma potential. This is an advantage in comparison to the conventional Langmuir probe where, after determination of the electron temperature Te, the plasma potential can only be derived indirectly from the formula Vpl = Vfl + aTe, where a is a function of the ratio of the electron to the ion saturation currents (a is around 2.4 in a magnetised hydrogen plasma). In addition, an emissive probe also works if there are electron drifts or beams in the plasma. Emissive probes are usually realised by small directly heated loops of W-wire. Drawbacks of this design are the limited lifetime, the low electron emissivity of W and the voltage drop across the wire. We have developed a new type of emissive probe, which is heated by an infrared high-power diode laser with a maximum output power of 50 W. The probe consists of a small cylinder of LaB6. The probe was inserted into the edge region of the VINETA helicon discharge plasma. Globally, the future of work is changing with organisations increasingly reliant on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills and related expertise. In developing countries such as Nigeria, professionals with these skills and expertise are also in high demand. With changes in healthcare, education, economic growth and sustainable development, there is an urgent need to increase the number of young people choosing to study and work in STEM, and particularly digital technologies and engineering. Previous research has identified that the traditional instructivist and theoretical approach to teaching often used in Nigeria and other developing countries can be a major barrier to young people, who can often regard STEM subjects and careers as not for `people like them' and/or have very narrow perspectives of opportunities in the STEM sector. It also means that young people are not equipped to take their place as digital citizens in today's global society. The DIGISTEM programme was commissioned by the Ekiti State Government in Nigeria and sponsored by the World Bank to provide a novel approach to address these challenges. This paper presents its overall vision. Using an action research approach, a set of carefully designed interactions were conducted with young people and their schools and teachers. The initial results from this are presented and demonstrate that there is an urgent need to transform educational practice in this and other similar regions to provide a more authentic and active learning experience that prepares young people to be career-ready global digital citizens.
