Therefore, the precise and accurate determination of trace mercury in samples is of immense importance. In this regard, a spectrophotometric method has been developed for the quantification of Hg (II) in water, hair, and fish using deep eutectic (choline chloride, ChCl + decanol) solvent-based liquid-liquid microextraction (DES-LLME). All of the relevant parameters, including pH (9), volume of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) (300 µL), ratio of choline chloride and decanol (1:1), volume of DES (400 µL), volume of tetrahydrofuran (THF) (400 µL), and sample volume (40 mL) were optimized. The low limits of detection (LOD) (0.09 µg L−1) and quantification (LOQ) (0.325 µg L−1) demonstrate that the developed approach is highly sensitive. High preconcentration (PF) and enhancement factors (EF) of 50 show that the developed protocol is highly efficient. The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 6.32%, indicating that the method is reproducible. The method was validated by the analysis of TMDA-53.3 water and NCSZC81002B hair certified reference materials with high recoveries of 97% and 93%, respectively. The method was also employed for the analysis of tap water, dam water, river water, hair, and tuna fish with satisfactory recoveries from 95% to 102%. The developed approach was compared with literature methods on the basis of the limit of detection.

Human Resource Development (HRD) is the most essential framework for the employees and organizational development. HRD provides the enough opportunities for the employees to develop their personal skills, knowledge and abilities. This study is based on six dimensions of the HRD practices in public sector universities of Balochistan and observed the employees’ perceptions. The objective of the study is to examine the perception of the employees regarding the HRD practices on the quality of higher education in the public sector Universities of Balochistan. This study is a quantitative research and questionnaire was used for data collection. Questionnaires were distributed among faculty members and administrative staff of four focused universities. The five points Likert and Nominal scales have been used in the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics are used for frequency, percentage, and graphical estimation. Inferential statistic, Chi Square is used for hypothesis testing. The Coefficient of Cronbach’s alpha is used for reliability test. The results show that the employees have an optimistic view about quality of work life & welfare, organizational development, professional training & development, performance appraisal & rewards, and participative management except for human resource system & technology. It has been observed that HRD practices are given due consideration for the improvement of quality of higher education in these universities. Therefore, universities should improve their human resource system & technology by launching an information management system or learning management system and also give concentration on other dimensions such as participative management. The HRD practices are very important for the quality of higher education in public sector universities and top management of the universities should give close attention to these HRD practices.

Background In 2020, ACIE Appy study showed that COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the management of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) worldwide, with an increased rate of non-operative management (NOM) strategies and a trend toward open surgery due to concern of virus transmission by laparoscopy and controversial recommendations on this issue. The aim of this study was to survey again the same group of surgeons to assess if any difference in management attitudes of AA had occurred in the later stages of the outbreak. Methods From August 15 to September 30, 2021, an online questionnaire was sent to all 709 participants of the ACIE Appy study. The questionnaire included questions on personal protective equipment (PPE), local policies and screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection, NOM, surgical approach and disease presentations in 2021. The results were compared with the results from the previous study. Results A total of 476 answers were collected (response rate 67.1%). Screening policies were significatively improved with most patients screened regardless of symptoms (89.5% vs. 37.4%) with PCR and antigenic test as the preferred test (74.1% vs. 26.3%). More patients tested positive before surgery and commercial systems were the preferred ones to filter smoke plumes during laparoscopy. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was the first option in the treatment of AA, with a declined use of NOM. Conclusion Management of AA has improved in the last waves of pandemic. Increased evidence regarding SARS-COV-2 infection along with a timely healthcare systems response has been translated into tailored attitudes and a better care for patients with AA worldwide.

© 2022 Elsevier B.V.Palladium is an important metal as it has a wide range of applications in different fields but can cause cancer in human beings. Therefore, precise quantification of palladium is important. For this purpose, new material Ti3AlC2 max phase having unique properties like high stability, thermal conductivity and environmental friendly has been synthesized. To increase its surface area of Ti3AlC2 max phase, graphene oxide (GO) has been incorporated to form Ti3AlC2 max phase GO nanocomposite. Ti3AlC2 max phase GO nanocomposite was used as solid phase extracting material for microextraction and preconcentration of Pd(II) in environmental samples and medical appliances. Characterization of the adsorbent was achieved by using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and surface area analyzer (SAA). All the parameters that influence the extraction efficiency of the adsorbent like solution pH, amount of adsorbent, volume of sample, vortex time, desorption condition and interferences effect were determined and optimized. The limit of detection (0.327 µg/L) and limit of quantification (1.09 µg/L) show that the method is highly sensitive. The relative standard deviation was calculated as 5.48 % for five repeated measurements, which shows that the developed method is reproducible. The method is highly efficient with large values of preconcentration factor (20) and enhancement factors (20). The method was validated by applying the method to real water samples, soil samples and medical appliances with satisfied recovery results (94–106 %).

Background Retro-hepatic inferior vena cava (RHIVC) injuries resulting from blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma are rare but devastating events that remain a considerable challenge to even the most experienced doctors, which continue to carry a considerable mortality. Aim To establish a better understanding of the management of RHIVC injuries and to identify any adjuncts or operative methods that were associated with an increased survival. Methods A systematic review of the MEDLINE database was conducted using Medical Search Headings and exploded keywords and phrases. Studies were screened and subjected to inclusion/exclusion criteria. Data were extracted in a methodical manner collecting population demographics, morbidity, mortality and operative intervention, where provided. Operative strategies were compared and discussed. Results An initial search identified 483 articles. Following duplicate removal and abstract screening, 85 full-text articles were assessed with 25 meeting the desired criteria and were, therefore, included in the systematic review. Key operative strategies and complications were identified and discussed. Conclusion The wide variety of operative interventions in the management of RHIVC liver injuries described attest to the increased efforts to improve outcomes. The overall improvement in mortality can be noted since the earlier descriptions reported mortality approaching 100% compared to the 52% reported in this review. An algorithm has been proposed based on these findings and our experiences for the management of RHIVC injuries.

In solid-state lightning, GaN-based vertical LED technology has attracted tremendous attention because its luminous efficacy has surpassed the traditional lightning technologies, even the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the invention of efficient blue LEDs, which enabled eco-friendly and energy-saving white lighting sources. Despite today’s GaN-based blue VLEDs can produce IQE of 90% and EQE of 70-80%, still there exist a major challenge of efficiency droop. Nonetheless, state-of-the-art material characterization and failure analysis tools are inevitable to address that issue. In this context, although LEDs have been characterized by different microscopy techniques, they are still limited to either its semiconductor or active layer, which mainly contributes towards the IQE. This is also one of the reason that today’s LEDs IQE exceeded above 80% but EQE of 70-80% remains. Therefore, to scrutinize the efficiency droop issue, this work focused on developing a novel strategy to investigate key layers of the LED structure, which play the critical role in enhancing the EQE = IQE x LEE factors. Based on that strategy, wafer bonding, reflection, GaN-Ag interface, MQWs and top-textured layers have been systematically investigated under the powerful advanced microscopy techniques of SEM-based TKD/EDX/EBSD, AC-STEM, AFM, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and PL. Further, based on these correlative microscopy results, optimization suggestions are given for performance enhancement in the LEDs. The objective of this doctoral research is to perform atomic-scale characterization on the VLED layers/interfaces to scrutinize their surface topography, grain morphology, chemical composition, interfacial diffusion, atomic structure and carrier localization mechanism in quest of efficiency droop and reliability issues. The outcome of this research advances in understanding LED device physics, which will facilitate standardization in its design for better smart optoelectronics products.

Nervous system lesions are characterized by the loss of neuronal numbers and types. The neurotrophic factor levels in an injured tissue reflect their potential for regeneration. This hypothesis was investigated in olfactory bulb (OB), where olfactory tract was surgically transected disrupting neuronal migration and turnover. The effects were followed with quantification of mitral cells and three neurotrophic factors mRNA levels for 6 weeks. The neuronal numbers decreased by 3rd- and 4th-week in transected OBs followed by their restoration, comparable with that of controls at 5th- and 6th-week. The endogenous levels of three neurotrophic factors - (brain derived neurotrophic factor, insulin growth factor-1 and fibroblast growth factor-2) using qPCR showed increase at 2nd-week by 136-, 8- and 2-fold respectively. Also, there was a significant increase in specific neurotrophic factors at 5th-week and 6th-weeks. The results propose a temporal link between deployment of neurotrophic factors and the plausible restorative events for mitral cell numbers in OB.

Lightweight, energy-absorbing structures are needed in many areas where the protection and threat mitigation of fragile personnel and objects are essential. Hence, the investigation of development and characterisation of energy-absorbing materials are crucial. The recent advances in the additive manufacturing (AM) have enhanced the development of such structures in many aspects with precisely designed configurations of the internal structures. Given the range of potential materials, many possible variations exist compared to the traditional polymer-based foams. The advantages of rapid prototyping, enabled through AM, allows a streamlined design process in obtaining a structure of mechanical behaviour suitable for intended applications. In this work, the development and fabrication of a flexible polymer-based lattice structure with core strut variations are demonstrated. A re-entrant honeycomb unit cell based lattice structure is chosen in a sandwich configuration with the implementation and modification of core struts for further investigation. The designed lattices are fabricated using stereolithography (SLA), a type of vat photopolymerisation, utilising the Formlabs Flexible 80A® resin. The core struts are modified in terms of shape, density and number of inclusions within the internal structure of the lattice. The mechanical characterisation of the samples under uniaxial compression is carried out at the strain rates of 0.005, 0.9 and 108 s-1 and the appropriate experimental apparatus and the diagnostics are developed and used for this purpose. The stress-strain responses reveal that the variations in the core struts affect the overall deformation behaviour of the structure, as well as the strain rate dependence of the relevant mechanical parameters. Anisotropic nature of the lattices are also investigated by uni-axial compression of the lattices positioned at 45◦ and 90◦ angles. The theoretically obtained parameters, from the formulations only dependent on the relative density, and the parameters calculated from the measured values are evaluated and compared, providing the insight that the the structural geometries influence the characteristic behaviour of the lattices over relative density or the material, highlighting the significance of the chosen structural design of the lattices. Finally, the discussion of the research findings in terms of the recommended applications of the each sample type, the functional flexibility and adaptability are presented. Open Access

It constitutes a general review that bears special features, facts and figures over the recent developments of Islamic banking and finance across the globe. It takes stock of the growing institutional and infrastructure support for the Islamic banking and finance system in Muslim countries and Western financial markets.FindingsThe findings of the paper hold that Islamic banking and finance industry has been making breakthrough improvements to become a truly viable and competitive alternative to conventional systems at the global level. Islamic banking and finance institutions have acquired booming grounds in the Middle East, South East and South East Asia. These growing Islamic hubs have been acting as a launching pad to promote Islamic banking in Western business and financial markets. There are some core factors contributing to the recent success of Islamic banking and finance, such as spiraling oil prices worldwide, prolonged boom in the Middle Eastern economies, product innovation and sophistication, increasingly receptive attitude of conventional regulators and information technology advancements that have been acting as a catalyst for the Islamic banking and finance industry to go global. Given all growth patterns, Islamic banking may be able to win over the majority of customers from the Muslim world that constitutes almost 24 per cent of the world's population (over 1.3 billion), and other ethical groups across the globe in times ahead.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper takes stock of on‐going developments in Islamic banking and finance industry worldwide. It deals with latest information, facts and figures, which however do not amount to a substantive volume to allow statistical testing and analysis to figure out the main factors and their actual contributions in making Islamic banking and finance emerge as the fastest growing industry of the global finance. This paper mostly bears a subjective outlook.Originality/valueThe paper aims to attract the global attention towards the fastest growing industry of the contemporary world of finance. It presents the case of the Islamic banking and finance industry in the most powerful, comprehensive and logical fashions to remove all misgivings about it in some circles, and let it be seen as an industry adding more ethical, competitive, flexible and diversified tools and systems to global financial markets. The paper highlights the increasing moral and material support that Islamic banking has been enjoying from Muslim governments and the public, and Western market players and regulators. PurposeThe main objective of this paper is to highlight the main features of interest‐free banking theory and practice in Pakistan over the last three decades. It explores the country‐wide interest‐free banking movement since its inception in 1980 to its demise in 2002, and the reasons for such outcome. Moreover, it addresses the question why interest‐free banking has been recently reinstated by the government of Pakistan under the dual banking system and more importantly, would it be any real and big success?Design/methodology/approachThe paper explores concepts, model, strategies and practical issues related with the Islamic banking and finance system. It holds a conceptual approach. It is designed as a case study that provides comprehensive analysis over the contributions made by political, government, financial, legislative and religious institutions of Pakistan in setting‐up the interest‐free banking and finance system in the country.FindingsThe findings of the paper hold that all intellectual, practical, institutional, political, constitutional and regulatory measures undertaken by the government and top policy makers of Pakistan to transform the banking system of the country Shariah compliant were devoid of real urge and effectiveness, only piecemeal solutions. The interest institution got very firm roots in the financial sector of Pakistan and strongly supported by other exploitative agents and systems that prevail in the socio‐economic life of the country. There is a dire need to take revolutionary steps with strong political and public support and commitment to uproot interest along with its allies from Pakistan economy and society. After all, Pakistan is an ideologically‐based Muslim country that holds the constitutional responsibility to eliminate interest from its economy and establish a fair and just socio‐economic order.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper envisages the main concepts, models and strategies adopted in implementing the Islamic economic and finance system in Pakistan. However, it does not deal in quantitative data and statistical tools to support its findings by empirical evidence. Rather it entails subjective analysis and critique work.Originality/valueThe paper provides the deeper insight of highly technical, complex and mammoth job of eradicating interest from Pakistan economy that was deeply rooted and also strongly supported by other exploitative forces prevailing in the socio‐economic life of the country, causing gross distribution of wealth and concentration of resources and powers in the hands of few. It explains that the need for a major change in one institution or system entails the demand for bringing radical changes in the whole set‐up of country. This paper undertakes longitudinal view to analyze the institutional, financial, judicial and political developments that took place in Pakistan to restructure its economy on Islamic lines. It lays down all relevant facts and issues systematically to provide a clear‐cut assessment over the past, present and future of interest‐free banking movement in Pakistan.
