Technology application in the 21st Century teaching and learning setting substantially promotes quality education. The study determined the acceptability and efficiency of the developed lecture demo video as a learning material in teaching Grade-12 EIM in selecting electrical materials and supplies and their specifications. The analysis sought to investigate the outcomes of the assessment rating of the prepared lecture-demo video and the impact of implementation. Teacher experts, student experts, and regular students from secondary schools in Surigao Del Sur Division were the study subjects. The study's tool was the DepEd standard evaluation rating tool for non-print materials obtained from the Surigao del Sur Division Learners Resource Management and Development Office, the developed lecture demo video, and the pretest and posttest questionnaires adopted from Project PPE (Portfolio Predicate on Exemplar) on EIM. The study employed a developmental-quasi experimental design. The developed lecture-demo video was rated Very Satisfactory in content, instructional and technical quality. Analyses found that students who utilized the created lecture-demo video with learning activity sheets outperformed those who used the learning activity sheets on the posttest. The study concluded that the developed lecture-demo video has a positive learning outcome in learners' competency mastery. Likewise, it is widely accepted and recommended for learning purposes as experts evaluate content, instructional, and technical quality.

Introduction It has been hypothesised that the regular consumption of safe, live microbes confers health-promoting attributes, including the prevention of disease. To address this hypothesis, we propose a scoping review approach that will systematically assess the large corpus of relevant literature that is now available on this research topic. This article outlines a protocol for a scoping review of published studies on interventions with live microbes in non-patient populations across eight health categories. The scoping review aims to catalogue types of interventions, measured outcomes, dosages, effectiveness, as well as current research gaps. Methods and analysis The scoping review will follow the six-staged protocol as proposed by Arksey and O’Malley and will include the following stages: defining the research questions (stage 1); defining the eligibility criteria and finalising search strategy (stage 2); selection of studies based on the eligibility criteria (stage 3); development of a data extraction framework and charting of data (stage 4); aggregation of results and summarisation of findings (stage 5); and the optional consultation with stakeholders (stage 6), which will not be performed. Ethics and dissemination Since the scoping review synthesises information from existing literature, no separate ethical approval is required. The findings of the scoping review will be communicated for publication to an open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal, presented at relevant conferences, and disseminated at future workshops with all relevant data and documents being available online through the Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/kvhe7).

In recent years, there has been a global resurgence of public interest in fermented foods. In parallel, there have been several new studies that associate the consumption of fermented foods with a variety of beneficial impacts. These combined developments have led to a renewed focus in research and innovation vis-à-vis fermented foods, particularly traditional fermented foods, with an aim to harness this information to develop novel fermented foodstuffs and ingredients and make them available in the market. Consequently, an ever greater and more diverse array of fermented foods, including functional fermented foods with health benefits, are becoming available for public consumption in global markets, with the number expected to grow substantially in the coming decade. This rapidly expanding portfolio of commercially available fermented foods has in turn required an evolution in the corresponding global regulatory frameworks. Due to the innovative and emerging nature of these foods, combined with historical differences in regulator approaches, significant disharmony exists across these frameworks, with individual nations and organizations often adopting unique approaches relating to the establishment of standards and specifications. In this review, we provide an overview of the current regulatory frameworks for a diversity of fermented foods across multiple jurisdictions, with special emphasis on differences in legislative structures and approaches, regulatory harmonization, and current legislative limitations. Overall, the review provides important perspective and context in relation to current global fermented food regulatory practices with possible directions and recommendations for future legislative efforts.

John McGahern (1934-2006) believed that books could act as mirrors. They can also act as windows on the world. Such windows, however, necessarily frame our fields of vision, alter and shape our perspectives. Far from being static, the artist’s perspective must continually evolve. This thesis, then, is a literary analysis of the development of John McGahern’s artistic and poetic vision – his ‘ways of looking’ – across his novels. It examines the shifting focus of this vision: how and why it develops, what effects such developments have on the novels’ forms, and how these forms evolve, at what times and in response to what stimuli. The thesis demonstrates that such developments mirror an analogous social expansion, during the latter half of the twentieth century. It suggests that the novels’ literary spaces relate to McGahern’s efforts to realise a more accommodating form to envelop the structureless society. The number of critical studies on McGahern has increased markedly in recent years. Yet, research still tends to fall into the well-established camps of social realism or literary aestheticism. This study explores the common ground between the material context and social worlds of each novel and the hermeneutics of a ‘traditional’ literary investigation. It traverses such divides through close readings of McGahern’s novels, with attention to the topopoetical production of images of the house, the home, and the family unit. The thesis ultimately suggests that attention to McGahern’s literary spaces provides a greater understanding of the aesthetic, vision and form of each novel, and allows us to understand those aspects relative to the social, cultural and political undercurrents of the novels individually and collectively. 2024-11-16

This practice-in-research dissertation combines creative writing and literary criticism to explore the farm narratives that arose in Ireland due to expansionist agricultural ideologies, and by extension considers what is at stake both economically and culturally when farmers are forced to participate in productivist agriculture. In particular, the academic research investigates the extent to which the Irish writer John McGahern’s That They May Face the Rising Sun (2002) and Icelander Halldór Laxness’ Independent People (1934) can be read as responses to specific agricultural policies practiced at the time of their publications. Iceland provides an intuitive counterpoint in considering Irish agriculture as both nations once shared similar farming systems, but have seen the lived experiences of farmers—and subsequent narratives regarding them—diverge dramatically at key points in their policymaking histories. When presented as an act of political intent, McGahern’s Rising Sun becomes the first of a new kind of Irish farm narrative, one that is often marked by the economic conditions of agriculture. To add to current Irish farm narratives and further examine the circumstances of small agriculture, I completed the novel draft The Beasts They Turned Away. The lyrical gothic novel presents an aging Irish farmer who stubbornly refuses to give up farming until death takes him, despite losing a grip on his senility and physical health. In addition, he cares for a small boy who is mute and burdened with a curse that turns the natural world against him, including the landscape and the wildlife on it. He must protect the boy from the ire of the local town, all the while struggling to keep his small dairy farm. Ultimately, The Beasts They Turned Away and my academic research are unified by their fundamental objective: to suggest that the transition from small to large agriculture was not inevitable as a symptom of advancing technology or growing populations, but rather the result of specific policy decisions that had momentous consequences. 2023-12-11

The following submission represents the work of four years as a PhD Practice and Research student at NUIG in the department of English. The General Introduction describes the process from conception to application and execution of both larger sections. It engages with the advantages and obstacles which can emerge while practicing creative and critical work in tandem. The Critical Section applies a textual study to John McGahern’s second novel The Dark by utilising tools of narratology and stylistics. The technique of the work’s text is explored through the thematic frames of absence/presence. By treating the material in a narratological and stylistic frame of reference, the thesis argues for a move away from the privileged context approach to John McGahern’s body of work. The findings develop previous scholarship on The Dark by concluding that the ‘traumatised self’, and not the impediments of mother, father and the world, is the chief obstacle which ultimately ends the boy’s dream university career. This journey is particularly progressed by the transcension of boy beyond father, as I will discuss in the Critical Section. The Creative Section is a novel draft titled ‘Copybook’. It narrates the life of Tommy O’Toole from age 13 to 17 in the contemporary world as he tries to navigate adolescence in difficult domestic circumstances, in a broadly similar context to the protagonist of The Dark. The gifted artist descends into sophisticated juvenile crime as his mother fades in a nursing home and his wayward father becomes embroiled in a local robbery. The project draws the experience of adolescence through the filters of the theoretical and practical text and collectively illuminates the physical, mental and spiritual regulating factor of parental presence. 2022-09-27

Literary criticism, of the type that follows in this project, is a series of experiments with and about the matter of authority: about how much authority a critic should want to have or be willing to give up, and how much authority a critic is able to live without. This is not a project that deals in explanations, nor is it a project that feels the need to come to some point. If, at its worst, criticism involves the realization that some walls resist all efforts at removal, that despite the benefit of sunlight and a country to stretch our legs in, we may nevertheless come to declare, along with Dickens’ Miss Wade, ‘I have the misfortune of not being a fool’, then at its best, criticism is the fact of not being trammeled by what we demand of others, and by what we cannot quite bring ourselves to say. It is an acceptance, even, that a fool may be what we really are, that if we cannot absolutely be cured, we might, at least, not be quite so badly off as we might have believed. If stories are what we seem to require, they are also (partly) what we suffer from. What I wanted to find in the course of this project was a way of preventing potentially interesting ideas from settling into a single, definite shape. What I wanted was not so much a new school of criticism (or a new theory about criticism) as a fresh commitment to the value of conversation, even when (perhaps especially when) the conversation we’re having doesn’t seem to make very much sense. This commitment to conversation, even in the face of meaninglessness (or nonsense) puts this project squarely in the spiritual territory of Lewis Carroll. Like the world underground, this project resists dogmatic simplification. In Wonderland, word games coexist with the King of Hearts’ relief that time needn’t be wasted searching for meaning in incomprehensible verses. Sometimes, as Alice discovers in the course of her adventures, judgement is the most nonsensical thing of all. 2023-07-23

This study explores the centrality of the boundary condition for creative endeavour through close readings of late works by John Banville, Philip Roth and J. M. Coetzee. The thematic concern with death in these authors’ late periods relates to their respective interrogations of the fundamental role that confronting mortality plays in the practices of writing as well as reading. In each case, the limit that death presents for thought is allied with the necessity, at the core of creative work, including the work of the critic, to exceed the self and to bring the new into being. In his late period, Banville moves towards an emptying of content, gradually erasing the subject from the centre of his aesthetic and foregrounding the impersonal forces at play in aesthetic experience. In drawing attention to the dissolution of bound identities in the literary event, he presents death as a process intrinsic to life and a crucial constituent of the art experience. Likewise, Roth’s late aesthetic centres on the apprehension of death in the living present, an experience that violently disrupts the progress narrative of being-towards-death. Mortal awareness is at the crux of his critique of utopian ideologies that depart from creative and critical engagement with the contingencies of the present. In Coetzee’s late work, death emerges as the very source of the writer’s authority; in placing himself at the precipice of death, he casts off inherited modes of thinking and writing so that a singular voice might emerge. The sheer newness and strangeness of Coetzee’s late voices compel the reader, in turn, to abandon known templates for understanding and to respond creatively and contingently. For all these authors, art emerges not out of unlimited freedom but from confronting limitation and finitude. Their works impose a demand on the reader to eschew interpretive templates and to attend to what is present on the page. In addition to drawing out the significance of death in the authors’ respective oeuvres, this study contributes to an emergent critical conversation that seeks to counter a decentring relativism that prevailed in literary criticism of the late twentieth century. It presents a case for re-centring the work of literature and rehabilitating the critical practice of close reading. 2021-08-28

Interest in Cormac McCarthy¿s writing has grown rapidly over the past decade, with an attendant increase in the scholarly attention paid to his works. The author's long affiliation with the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) has often been remarked upon, but little scholarship has attempted to explore the potential interplay between some of SFI-period McCarthy's thematic and stylistic traits and a way of viewing the world encouraged by SFI's complexity science milieu. This thesis addresses that scholarly gap by way of a series of close readings of the five McCarthy novels from All the Pretty Horses (1992) to The Road (2006). The analysis identifies and teases out the overarching emphasis on contingency that distinguishes the SFI-period novels and gradually develops an original way of reading McCarthy's later metaphysics with respect to complexity and emergence. McCarthy's use of paratactic syntax is examined in detail and its various functions are enumerated; an allegorical relationship between his style and his novels' fictive metaphysics is argued for. The Border Trilogy's exploration of contingency is detailed alongside its celebration of the imaginative capacity to generate narrative. The prevalence of references to contingent fortune in No Country for Old Men (2005) is examined, as is the way that the novel continues McCarthy's drift away from supernaturalism to a more metaphysically naturalist worldview. The affective power of The Road is analysed and related to its depiction of a world in which the contingency of the global biosphere is made frighteningly apparent. Finally, the focus on contingency and the tension between the being of the world and its witnessing are brought together and read through the lens of emergence. In doing so, this thesis uses its thorough close readings as the solid foundation of an attempt to present a new way of reading later McCarthy's fictive metaphysics. 2018-05-29
