Abstract

The InSight mission collected an astounding seismic dataset from Mars during more than four years of operation until it was retired in 12/2022. The Marsquake Service detected over 1300 seismic events. The largest marsquake reached magnitude 4.6. Two other significant events are distant impacts, with magnitudes M4.0 and 4.2 and crater diameters of 130 and 150 m respectively. We present the current understanding of the Martian seismicity and the different types of events observed on Mars.Low Frequency (LF) family are the largest events and include energy predominantly below 1 Hz. They are similar to teleseismic events on Earth, with clear P and S waves. The epicenter is known for about half of the LF events, fewer have constrained back-azimuth. Seismicity occurs at only a few spots around Mars - a large number of LF events are located at 26–30° at the volcanic Cerberus Fossae region. Two events lie beyond the core shadow and have PP and SS phases. High-frequency (HF) family exhibit energy predominantly at and above the 2.4 Hz local subsurface resonance. HF events generally have magnitudes below M2.5 and originate from central Cerberus Fossae. Likely these are shallow events associated with volcanic dykes. HF events have inter and intra seasonal trends not yet understood. A small number of HF events have higher frequency content, up to 20–30 Hz with amplification on the horizontal components, and are termed Very High Frequency (VF) events. Abstract

For more than four years the Marsquake Service (MQS) detected and catalogued marsquakes from near realtime data recorded by SEIS, InSight’s seismometer deployed on the surface of Mars. Now that the data collection phase of the mission is over, we review the procedures and methods developed by MQS and describe the contents of the catalogue. With only a single station, there are obvious challenges in providing a catalogue for the entire planet. Due to the low SNR of marsquakes and the extreme variability of background noise, impulsive seismic signals are rarely evident and standard automated algorithms cannot be used to identify marsquakes, and manual review was needed.The MQS tools are based on best practice and standards used in seismic networks on Earth, for example we use a single station interactive analysis GUI based on SeisComP. Consistent procedures were developed to distinguish marsquakes from atmospheric noise or other data anomalies, classify events, pick phases, determine distance using a suite of Martian velocity models which has been updated during the mission, determine back azimuth, and locate events. Mars magnitudes are assigned using calibrated magnitude relations.. The final catalogue includes over 1300 marsquakes. Six events are known meteoroid impacts confirmed from visual imaging, their proximity to MQS locations confirms our location methodology. The catalogue contains quakes from within 1 degree of the lander out to 146 degrees distance and magnitudes span from 1 to 4.6. 3. Stratification of heterogeneity in the lithosphere of Mars from envelope modeling of very high-frequency seismic events

Abstract

Following its deployment at the surface of Mars, the seismometer SEIS of the InSIght – NASA Mission has detected tens of very high-frequency (VF) seismic events (> 1 Hz). In this work, we constrain the regional attenuation properties of the Martian lithosphere using both impacts and VF datato characterize the heterogeneities and volatile content as a function of depth. To carry out this task, we model the high-frequency energy envelopes of the seismic events using a multiple-scattering approach, considering a stratification ofvelocity andattenuation in the medium. In a first approximation, we consider a simple attenuation structure composed of a heterogenous crust overlying a weakly inhomogeneous mantle. Our inversion results show that a strongly diffusive and globally dry layer of about 20 km thickness in the vicinity of the InSight landing site (northern plains) suffices to retrieve the shape of near impacts, but the thickness has to be increased to at least 60 km to recover the shape of distant VF events. The observed correlation between the depth extent of the diffusive layer and the thickness of the crust indicates that the main cause of scattering is the lithological heterogeneity.Furthermore, our modelsuggests that the sources of a number of distant VF seismic events are shallow and located in the southern highlands or in close vicinity of the Martian dichotomy.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

vEGU21: Gather Online | 19–30 April 2021, Seismic noise recorded at the surface of Mars has been monitored since February 2019, using the InSight seismometers.This noise can reach -200 dB and is 500 times lower than on Earth at night and it increases of 30 dB during the day. We analyze its polarization as a function of time and frequency in the band 0.03-1Hz. We use the degree of polarization to extract signals with stable polarization independent of their amplitude and type of polarization. We detect polarized signals at all frequencies and all times. Glitches correspond to linear polarized signals which are more abundant during the night. For signals with elliptical polarization, the ellipse is in the horizontal plane below 0.3 Hz (LF). Above 0.3 Hz (HF) and except in the evening, the ellipse is in the vertical plane and the major axis is tilted. While polarization azimuths are different in the two frequency bands, they both vary as a function of local hour and season. They are also correlated with wind direction, particularly during the daytime. We investigate possible aseismic and seismic origins of the polarized signals. Lander or tether noise can be discarded. Pressure fluctuations transported by wind may explain part of the HF polarization but not the tilt of the ellipse. This tilt can be obtained if the source is an acoustic emission coming from high altitude at critical angle. Finally, in the evening when the wind is low, the polarized signals may correspond to the seismic wavefield of the Mars background noise.

Abstract

A plethora of geophysical, geo- chemical, and geodynamical observations indicate that the terrestrial planets have differentiated into silicate crusts and mantles that surround a dense core. The latter consists primarily of Fe and some lighter alloying elements (e.g., S, Si, C, O, and H) [1]¿. The Martian meteorites show evidence of chalcophile element depletion, suggesting that the otherwise Fe-Ni- rich core likely contains a sulfide component, which influences physical state.

Abstract

InSight is the first planetary mission dedicated to exploring the whole interior of a planet using geophysical methods, specifically seismology and geodesy. To this end, we observed seismic waves of distant marsquakes and inverted for interior models using differential travel times of phases reflected at the surface (PP, SS...) or the core mantle-boundary (ScS), as well as those converted at crustal interfaces. Compared to previous orbital observations1-3, the seismic data added decisive new insights with consequences for the formation of Mars: The global average crustal thickness of 24-75 km is at the low end of pre-mission estimates5. Together with the the thick lithosphere of 450-600 km5, this requires an enrichment of heat-producing elements in the crust by a factor of 13-20, compared to the primitive mantle. The iron-rich liquid core is 1790-1870 km in radius6, which rules out the existence of an insulating bridgmanite-dominated lower mantle on Mars. The large, and therefore low-density core needs a high amount of light elements. Given the geochemical boundary conditions, Sulfur alone cannot explain the estimated density of ~6 g/cm3 and volatile elements, such as oxygen, carbon or hydrogen are needed in significant amounts. This observation is difficult to reconcile with classical models of late formation from the same material as Earth. Abstract

The instrument package SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) with the two co-located seismometers VBB and SP is installed on the surface of Mars as part of NASA's InSight mission. When compared to terrestrial installations, SEIS is deployed in a very harsh wind and temperature environment that leads to inevitable degradation of the quality of the recorded data. The daily atmospheric temperature variations of approx. 80K are attenuated by different insulation layers to approx. 15K peak-to-peak at the sensor level. Typical wind speeds vary between 0 and 5 m/s leading to a diurnal variation in the broad-band rms noise level by two orders of magnitude. One ubiquitous artifact in the raw broad-band data is an abundance of one-sided, transient pulses often accompanied by high-frequency spikes. We show that these pulses, which we term "glitches", can be modeled as the response of the instrument to a step in acceleration, while the spikes can be modeled as the response to a simultaneous step in displacement. We attribute the glitches primarily to intermittent stress relaxation events internal to SEIS caused by the large diurnal temperature variations to which the instrument is exposed during a Martian sol. Only a small fraction of glitches correspond to a motion of the SEIS package as a whole caused by minuscule tilts of the instrument. Whilst such kind of data disturbances are typically discarded when occurring in terrestrial data, this is no option for the data returned from the Red Planet. We therefore do not only demonstrate their effects on the seismic data and analyze their origins, but also propose algorithms that are able to detect and remove many of these (mostly) non-seismic signals. We further published our codes (both Python and MATLAB) so that interested researchers can make their own choices on how to treat the data and to which extent.

The gyromagnetic factor of the low-lying E=251.96(9) keV isomeric state of the nucleus ^{99}Zr was measured using the time-dependent perturbed angular distribution technique. This level is assigned a spin and parity of J^{π}=7/2^{+}, with a half-life of T_{1/2}=336(5) ns. The isomer was produced and spin aligned via the abrasion-fission of a ^{238}U primary beam at RIKEN RIBF. A magnetic moment |μ|=2.31(14)μ_{N} was deduced showing that this isomer is not single particle in nature. A comparison of the experimental values with interacting boson-fermion model IBFM-1 results shows that this state is strongly mixed with a main νd_{5/2} composition. Abstract

AGU Fall Meeting 2019 in San Francisco, 9-13 December 2019, Exploring the internal structure and the dynamics of our solar system is mandatory to understand the behavior of our universe and its origin. One of the tools chosen by NASA is seismology particularly in order to constrain the parameters of the deep interior structure of the red planet via the Insight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport) mission. InSight was successfully landed on November 26th, 2018 in Elysium Planitia with geophysical instruments a short-period seismometer and a broadband seismometer (SEIS, Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure). Both seismometers are now installed directly on Mars surface and enable to analyze the continuous seismic signal.But, before making the structure inversion, we need to extract the features from SEIS data. However, those features may nevertheless be hidden into noise, or may escape from analysis due to the limitations imposed by the current methodologies.Therefore, the aim of this study is to overcome this problem by well extracting, recognizing and classifying the instrument signals using Machine Learning and Deep Learning new strategies inspired from the Deep scattering network.This is very promising for the SIES data as, we¿re going to be able not only to detect the familiar signals, but the exciting part is the unseen or the unknown ones. This technique is used to clean the data from the glitches. In fact, this tool has recently proved to be powerful in signal processing, data automatic feature extraction and may even be helpful to detect new types of signals. Those new signals can reveal unknown processes and lead to new discoveries about Mars physical processes.The method used in this study is divided into three fundamental steps. The first one, to make an automatic feature extraction using the Deep scattering transform which is a convolution neural network that computes a cascade of wavelets calculations and filtering operations to get a stable waveform representation stable to local deformations and overlapping at multiple times and frequencies.. The second step is to use those features for signal classification using Machine Learning classifier Gaussian Mixture Network. Finally, we update the wavelet mother bank depending on the results of the classification error minimization using Adam stochastic gradient descent.

Abstract

AGU Fall Meeting 2019 in San Francisco , 9-13 December 2019, EIS/InSIght team, InSight is the first planetary mission with a seismometer package, SEIS, since the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package. SEIS is complimented by APSS, which has as a goal to document the atmospheric source of seismic noise and signals. Since June 2019, SEIS has been delivering 6 axis 20 sps continuous seismic data, a rate one order of magnitude larger originally planned. More than 50 events have been detected by the end of July 2019 but only three have amplitudes significantly above the SEIS instrument requirement. Two have clear and coherent arrivals of P and S waves, enabling location, diffusion/attenuation characterization and receiver function analysis. The event¿s magnitudes are likely ¿ 3 and no clear surface waves nor deep interior phases have been identified. This suggests deep events with scattering along their final propagation paths and with large propagation differences as compared to Earth and Moon quakes. Most of the event¿s detections are made possible due to the very low noise achieved by the instrument installation strategy and the very low VBB self-noise. Most of the SEIS signals have amplitudes of spectral densities in the 0.03-5Hz frequency bandwidth ranging from 10-10 m/s2/Hz1/2 to 5 10-9 m/s2/Hz1/2. The smallest noise levels occurs during the early night, with angstrom displacements or nano-radian tilts. This monitors the elastic and seismic interaction of a planetary surface with its atmosphere, illustrated not only by a wide range of SEIS signals correlated with pressure vortexes, dust devils or wind activity but also by modulation of resonances above 1 Hz, amplified by ultra-low velocity surface layers. After about one half of a Martian year, clear seasonal changes appear also in the noise, which will be discussed. One year after landing, the seismic noise is therefore better and better understood, and noise correction techniques begun to be implemented, either thanks to the APSS wind and pressure sensors, or by SEIS only data processing techniques. These data processing techniques open not only the possibility of better signal to noise ratio of the events, but are also used for various noise auto-correlation techniques as well as searches of long period signals. Noise and seismic signals on Mars are therefore completely different from what seismology encountered previously on Earth and Moon.

EGU General Assembly in Viena, Austria,7–12 April 2019, Mars atmospheric pressure variations induce ground deformations that are the main source of environmental noise on the InSight SEIS instrument. Phenomena generating pressure variations, such as meteorological wavefronts, gravity waves, convective vortices and small-scale turbulence are covering the whole frequency range of SEIS broadband seismometers. These signals impact the capability of SEIS sensors to detect seismic waves propagating in Mars interior. However, the relation between pressure variations measured by the InSight pressure sensor and ground movements measured by SEIS being essentially linear, it is possible to invert both signals to find the transfer function between pressure and ground motion. Then, pressure generated ground movements can be substracted from SEIS records in order to improve their sensitivity to seismic waves. The transfer function, usually called compliance, depends on the ground properties. Thus, the decorrelation of SEIS records from pressure effects will also allow us to constrain the subsurface properties at the InSight landing site. Our study compares two different pressure decorrelation methods applied to Mars synthetic data, and records by both short period and very broadband SEIS sensors. The pressure-decorrelation methods are presented and their differences in terms of underlying assumptions and implementations are explained. Their performances and drawbacks, analyzed on realistic synthetic datasets, are discussed. We plan to apply these methods to real Mars data and use them to retrieve the ground compliance at the InSight landing site over a broad frequency range. Accordingly, we expect to extract elastic properties of the subsurface through the compliance measurements.Wind measurements by the TWINS wind sensor will be integrated in order to separate the effects of various atmospheric phenomena. This sensor is almost identical to the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station sent to Mars as part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), which operated even after the damage suffered during the MSL landing for more than two Martian years. Thus, wind measured by TWINS will provide valuable inputs to the decorrelation on the InSight SEIS instrument. Finally, the variations of decorrelation performances and compliance measurements with the diurnal Mars cycle will be analyzed.

Abstract

The 50th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, March 18–22, 2019., Introduction: The InSight mission landed on Mars on November, 26, 2018. This is the first planetary mission designed to deploy a complete geophysical observatory on Mars, following in the footsteps of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) deployed on the Moon in the 1970s [1]. It will thus provide the first ground truth constraints on interior structure of the planet. The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) [2] is one of three primary scientific investigations, the others being the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3) [3] and the Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment (RISE) [4]. SEIS is supported by the APSS package, (Auxiliary Payload Sensor Suite, [5]), whose goal is to document environmental sources of seismic noise and signals, as well as an imaging system [6]. After a brief description of the SEIS experiment, we will describe the deployment process, including the evolution of the SEIS noise from the deck (with only SPs) to the ground (with both VBBs and SPs), first without and finally with wind shield. We will then discuss early scientific observations, providing first constrains on the Mars micro-seismic noise, atmospherically-generated seismic signals, and surface and subsurface elastic structure., The SEIS team acknowledge the supports of NASA, CNES, UKSA, SSO and DLR for the experiment funding and of the SEIS operation team [38] for delivering SEIS data.

H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of full-length cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB_4.6. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 (98.1%) protein-coding and 642 (1.9%) non-protein-coding loci; 858 (2.5%) transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes. For all these transcripts and genes, we provide comprehensive annotation including gene structures, gene functions, alternative splicing variants, functional non-protein-coding RNAs, functional domains, predicted sub cellular localizations, metabolic pathways, predictions of protein 3D structure, mapping of SNPs and microsatellite repeat motifs, co-localization with orphan diseases, gene expression profiles, orthologous genes, protein-protein interactions (PPI) and annotation for gene families. The current H-InvDB annotation resources consist of two main views: Transcript view and Locus view and eight sub-databases: the DiseaseInfo Viewer, H-ANGEL, the Clustering Viewer, G-integra, the TOPO Viewer, Evola, the PPI view and the Gene family/group.

Abstract

During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). Abstract

Histone 3 lysine 9 (H3K9) demethylase JMJD1A regulates β-adrenergic-induced systemic metabolism and body weight control. Here we show that JMJD1A is phosphorylated at S265 by protein kinase A (PKA), and this is pivotal to activate the β1-adrenergic receptor gene (Adrb1) and downstream targets including Ucp1 in brown adipocytes (BATs). Phosphorylation of JMJD1A by PKA increases its interaction with the SWI/SNF nucleosome remodelling complex and DNA-bound PPARγ. This complex confers β-adrenergic-induced rapid JMJD1A recruitment to target sites and facilitates long-range chromatin interactions and target gene activation. This rapid gene induction is dependent on S265 phosphorylation but not on demethylation activity. Our results show that JMJD1A has two important roles in regulating hormone-stimulated chromatin dynamics that modulate thermogenesis in BATs. In one role, JMJD1A is recruited to target sites and functions as a cAMP-responsive scaffold that facilitates long-range chromatin interactions, and in the second role, JMJD1A demethylates H3K9 di-methylation., Demethylase JMJD1A activates thermogenesis-related target genes in response to β-adrenergic hormones. Here, the authors show that phosphorylation of JMJD1A at S265 increases its interaction with the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeler, leading to long-range chromatin interactions and target gene activation.

Abstract

English direct discourse is easily recognized by, for example, the lack of a complementizer, the quotation marks (or the intonational contour those induce), and verbatim (`shifted') pronouns. Japanese employs the same complementizer for all reports, does not have a consistent intonational quotation marking, and tends to drop pronouns where possible. Some have argued that this shows no more than that many Japanese reports are ambiguous. These authors claim that, despite the lack of explicit marking, the underlying distinction is just as hard in Japanese as it is in English. On the basis of a number of `mixed' examples, I claim that the line between direct and indirect is blurred and I propose a unified analysis of speech reporting in which a general mechanism of mixed quotation replaces the classical two-fold distinction.

Abstract

Background Nintedanib (formerly known as BIBF 1120) is an intracellular inhibitor that targets multiple tyrosine kinases. A phase 2 trial suggested that treatment with 150 mg of nintedanib twice daily reduced lung-function decline and acute exacerbations in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Methods We conducted two replicate 52-week, randomized, double-blind, phase 3 trials (INPULSIS-1 and INPULSIS-2) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 150 mg of nintedanib twice daily as compared with placebo in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The primary end point was the annual rate of decline in forced vital capacity (FVC). Key secondary end points were the time to the first acute exacerbation and the change from baseline in the total score on the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire, both assessed over a 52-week period. Results A total of 1066 patients were randomly assigned in a 3:2 ratio to receive nintedanib or placebo. Abstract

A relative measurement of total cross-sections is reported for polyethylene, marble, iron, and lead targets for the inclusive charged-current reaction nu(mu) + N --> mu- + X. The targets, passive blocks of similar to100 kg each, were exposed simultaneously to the CERN SPS wide-band muon-neutrino beam over a period of 18 weeks. Systematic effects due to differences in the neutrino flux and detector efficiency for the different target locations were minimised by changing the position of the four targets on their support about every two weeks. The relative neutrino fluxes on the targets were monitored within the same experiment using charged-current interactions in the calorimeter positioned directly downstream of the four targets. From a fit to the Z/A dependence of the total cross-sections a value is deduced for the effective neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio.

Abstract

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs), corresponding with electrical median nerve stimulation, were measured using an MRI-linked, whole-head MEG system. In total 184 hemispheres, SEFs were measured, involving 22 normal volunteers and 70 patients with intracranial lesions. The first SEF peak appeared 20.2 +/- 1.5 msec (mean +/- S.D.) after stimulation. The first peak was followed by a second and third peak, 7.7 +/- 3.2 msec and 14.6 +/- 5.4 msec respectively after the first. Corresponding isofield maps suggested a single current dipole oriented in the anterior direction for the first peak, posterior for the second and either anterior or posterior for the third. Using a spherical model and a single current dipole source, the localization of each peak was estimated and superimposed on individually determined MRI images. On a grand average basis, the first-peak dipole was localized on the posterior surface of the central sulcus, "area 3b." The second-peak dipole was localized 3.7 mm medial (P0.001) and 2.0 mm superior (P0.001) to the first-peak dipole, on the anterior wall of the central sulcus, "area 4." This study with a large number of subjects was able to statistically distinguish two adjacent cortical sources, located on opposite walls of the central sulcus, and within a few millimeters of each other.

Abstract

The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total, about 100 000 charged-current (CC) neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. In all, 2013 CC interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the CC cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu N-mu -> mu-CX)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +/- 0.32(stat) +/- 0.30(syst))%. The charm production cross-section as a function of neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f(D)(0) = 43.7 +/- 4.5, f(Lambda c)(+) = 19.2 +/- 4.2, f(D)(+) = 25.3 +/- 4.2 and f(Ds)(+) = 11.8 +/- 4.7.

Abstract

症例は41歳男性.慢性骨髄性白血病でインターフェロンーα2b (IFN一α2b) 500万単位/日の投与を受け, 39カ月後に蛋白尿が, 55カ月後には腎機能障害が出現し,漸次増悪した. 66カ月後, Ccrは44m1/minと低下し,一日lg前後の蛋白尿,血小板減少およびハプトグロビンの低値を認めた.腎生検所見から本例の腎障害に溶血性尿毒症症候群類似の細小血管レベルでの内皮細胞障害の関与が示唆され,原因としてIFN-αの関与が強く疑われた.

Abstract

The $��$-meson photoproduction cross sections have been measured on the C and Cu targets for the photon energies between 600 and 1100 MeV to investigate the behavior of the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance in a nucleus. The excitation functions of the cross section as well as the angular and momentum distributions of $��$-mesons are in quantitative agreement with the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) model calculations in which the $��$-meson emission processes other than the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance are also incorporated as proposed in the $��$-MAID model. It is shown that the excitation of the $D_{15}$(1675) resonance might play an important role for $E_��>900$ MeV., 16 pages 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B
