Previous research on how stereotypes affect perceptions of intimate partner violence and domestic homicide has found that violence committed by men is perceived as more severe and judged more harshly than violence committed by women. The present mock jury study investigated how perpetrator sex (male or female), crime type (familicide or filicide), and relatedness between perpetrator and child victims (biological or step) affect laypeople’s perceptions of the appropriate consequence of the crime, the reason for the offence, responsibility of the perpetrator, the likelihood of certain background factors being present, and the risk of future violence. One hundred sixty-seven university students read eight fictive descriptions of cases of multiple-victim domestic homicides, in which the sex of the perpetrator, the crime type, and the relatedness between the perpetrator and the child victims were manipulated. We found that participants recommended equally severe punishments to and placed the same amount of responsibility on male and female offenders. Female offenders were, however, regarded as mentally ill to a larger extent and perceived more likely to have been victims of domestic violence compared to male offenders. Male offenders, on the other hand, were seen as more likely to have committed domestic violence in the past, having been unemployed, have substance abuse, hold aggressive attitudes, and commit violent acts in the future. Participants also perceived offenders killing biological children as more mentally ill than offenders killing stepchildren. The present study extends the literature on the possible effect of stereotypes on decision making in psychiatric and judicial contexts.

food and beverages - Abstract
Increasing the use of locally produced protein feeds in ruminant production systems in northern Europe would be a valuable development. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) can be cultivated at high latitudes and cold-pressing the seeds to extract the oil produces a residue, hempseed cake (HC), with a high protein content. The overall aim of the studies presented in this thesis was to investigate the possibilities of using HC as a protein feed for ruminants. The in vitro gas production technique was developed further in order to estimate rumen protein degradation; the effective protein degradation (EPD) of HC determined by this method was low (0.33). When calculated from in situ crude protein (CP) disappearance, HC had a high EPD value (0.71-0.84) and a low in vitro intestinal digestibility (0.18-0.31) for the rumen undegradable protein (RUP). Moist heat treatment could be used to shift the site of CP digestion from the rumen to the small intestine. The highest temperature considered, 130°C, was associated with the largest amount of RUP and rumen undegraded amino acids with the highest intestinal digestibility. A high proportion of the neutral detergent fibre in HC was indigestible (0.85), which contributed to a low calculated metabolisable energy value (9.5 MJ/kg dry matter). Increasing the proportion of HC (0, 143, 233 or 318 g/kg dry matter) in the diet of dairy cows produced effects on the yields of milk, energy corrected milk and milk protein, fat and lactose that could be described by quadratic functions; the highest production was achieved by cows fed the diet containing 143 g HC/kg dry matter. There were linear decreases in the concentration of milk fat and protein and CP efficiency (milk protein/CP intake), and a linear increase in milk urea, with increasing proportions of HC. Supplementing barley-based diets with peas or rapeseed cake improved the growth performance of lambs, but inclusion of HC resulted in an average daily gain similar to that achieved with the control diet containing no protein supplement. The results from the studies underlying this thesis indicate that the nutritional value of HC will limit its use as a protein feed for ruminants.

Agronomy - Abstract

The formation of organs during embryonic development is calledorganogenesis. This process is regulated by the genes residing in the genome.Thousands of genes are likely to be involved, but there are increasing evidence thatmost organs develop through similar processes performed by conserved networks ofgene products from the same multi-gene families.Platelet-derived growth factor-A (PDGF-A) is a classical growth factor thatexerts its function via a receptor tyrosine kinase, PDGF receptor-á (PDGFR-á). Micedeficient for PDGF-A and PDGFR-á have been analysed in order to elucidate thefunction of PDGF-A in vivo. Deletion of either gene leads to perturbed developmentof several organ systems. In the central nervous system, PDGF-A is critical for the proliferation andspreading of oligodendrocyte progenitors. Loss of PDGF-A leads to defectiveoligodendrogenesis and hypomyelination. In the lung, PDGF-A is critical for multiplication and spreading ofmesenchymal alveolar smooth muscle cell progenitors along the branching bronchialtree. Loss of PDGF-A leads to loss of alveolar smooth muscle cells resulting in a lungdefect reminiscent of lung emphysema. In the skin, PDGF-A is proposed to promote proliferation of a subset ofPDGFR-á positive mesenchymal cells. These cells are subsequently recruited tobecome dermal fibroblasts and the mesenchymal components of the hair follicle: thedermal papilla and the dermal sheath. Lack of PDGF-A leads to fewer cells at theselocations, causing malformed hair follicles, thinner hair and failure to enter the secondhair cycle.A similar role is suggested for PDGF-A in the intestine. PDGF-A promotesproliferation of a subset of PDGFR-á positive mesenchymal progenitor cells that areinvolved in villus formation. At the onset of villus formation, these cells form clusters(called villus clusters) that remain localised at the tip of the growing villus. Our dataimplicate that the villus cluster is instrumental in villus morphogenesis. In the absenceof either PDGF-A or PDGFR-á , fewer villi are formed and those generated areabnormal in size and shape. In summary, we suggest that PDGF-A is a component in one of the conservedgene product networks, where the general principle for PDGF-A is to promoteproliferation (and possibly spreading at some locations) of progenitor cells thatsubsequently differentiate into cell types with important functions in organogenesis. In the lung, skin and hair follicles, and the gastrointestinal villus, the PDGF-A dependent cells are important in epithelial folding.
