Motivated by the practices of production sourcing in the apparel manufacturing industry, this article investigates an apparel manufacturing supply chain wherein an original brand manufacturer (OBM) may either outsource production to a competitive manufacturer (CM) or a non-CM (NCM) or set up factories to produce in-house, namely, Strategy C, Strategy NC, and Strategy N, respectively. If the OBM outsources production to the CM, technology spillover happens, and the CM is able to manufacture products with the same consumers’ preference level as the OBM does. We find that the OBM prefers Strategy N regardless of the manufacturing level and consumers’ product preference level when the investment cost is low. However, the OBM prefers Strategy C or NC when the investment cost is high. Specifically, when the manufacturing level is high, or the manufacturing level is medium, and the consumers’ product preference level is high, the OBM prefers Strategy NC; otherwise, the OBM prefers Strategy C. Furthermore, we demonstrate that employing the dual-sourcing strategy wherein the OBM outsources production to both CM and NCM simultaneously does not necessarily help OBM effectively mitigate the negative impact of technology spillover and delivery uncertainty, which depends on specific conditions.

Voltage Source Converters (VSC) are expected to be one of the major actors in future AC transmission grids. Their role includes the interconnection of renewable energy, from distributed sources such as residential PV to large Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) using HVDC. With the ongoing decommissioning of traditional power plants with their synchronous generators, VSCs must now bring support functions to the grid. The aim of this paper is to review the different grid services that can be achieved through VSCs and discuss their compatibility with the state-of-the-art VSC controls especially the so-called grid-following and grid-forming controls. After presenting the upcoming issues of future grids and classifying the main VSC controls, this paper deals with the different additional control laws which make it possible to support the AC grid. Some recommendations regarding future grid services classifications and power and energy requirements are given. A comparative table is also proposed to assess the role of the different control modes.

Species of the tribe Delphinieae (Ranunculaceae) have long been the focus of morphological, ecological, and evolutionary studies due to their highly specialized, nearly zygomorphic (bilaterally symmetrical) spiral flowers with nested petal and sepal spurs and reduced petals. The mechanisms underlying the development and evolution of Delphinieae flowers, however, remain unclear. Here, by conducting extensive phylogenetic, comparative transcriptomic, expression, and functional studies, we clarified the evolutionary histories, expression patterns, and functions of floral organ identity and symmetry genes in Delphinieae. We found that duplication and/or diversification of APETALA3-3 (AP3-3), AGAMOUS-LIKE6 (AGL6), CYCLOIDEA (CYC), and DIVARICATA (DIV) lineage genes was tightly associated with the origination of Delphinieae flowers. Specifically, an AGL6-lineage member (such as the Delphinium ajacis AGL6-1a) represses sepal spur formation and petal development in the lateral and ventral parts of the flower while determining petal identity redundantly with AGL6-1b. By contrast, two CYC2-like genes, CYC2b and CYC2a, define the dorsal and lateral-ventral identities of the flower, respectively, and form complex regulatory links with AP3-3, AGL6-1a, and DIV1. Therefore, duplication and diversification of floral symmetry genes, as well as co-option of the duplicated copies into the preexisting floral regulatory network, have been key for the origin of Delphinieae flowers.

PurposeAdopting the theory of planned behavior, this study attempts to investigate how subjective norms in the supply chain influence a firm's green innovation and how such influences are contingent upon the firm's internal and external factors (i.e. flexibility orientation and environmental dynamism). Two types of subjective norms are examined, i.e. injunctive norms (what supply chain partners say) and descriptive norms (what supply chain partners do).Design/methodology/approachUsing survey data of 178 Chinese small and medium-sized manufacturers, we employ hierarchical linear regression to test the proposed hypotheses.FindingsOur results indicate that both injunctive and descriptive norms are instrumental in stimulating firms to take actions on green innovation. Moreover, the flexibility orientation of a firm can strengthen the effect of descriptive norms. It is also observed that environmental dynamism weakens the efficacy of injunctive norms but strengthens that of descriptive norms on green innovation.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to apply the theory of planned behavior to explain the microfoundations of focal firm's green innovation and distinguish two types of subjective norms in the supply chain. In addition, it extends the theory of planned behavior by revealing internal and external contingent factors (i.e. flexibility orientation and environmental dynamism) of the relationship between subjective norms and firm behaviors.

Respiratory infectious diseases (H1N1, H5N1, COVID-19, etc.) are pandemics that can continually spread in the air through micro-droplets or aerosols. However, the detection of samples in gaseous media is hampered by the requirement for trace amounts and low concentrations. Here, we develop a wearable bioelectronic mask device integrated with ion-gated transistors. Based on the sensitive gating effect of ion gels, our aptamer-functionalized transistors can measure trace-level liquid samples (0.3 μL) and even gaseous media samples at an ultra-low concentration (0.1 fg/mL). The ion-gated transistor with multi-channel analysis can respond to multiple targets simultaneously within as fast as 10 min, especially without sample pretreatment. Integrating a wireless internet of things system enables the wearable mask to achieve real-time and on-site detection of the surrounding air, providing an alert before infection. The wearable bioelectronic masks hold promise to serve as an early warning system to prevent outbreaks of respiratory infectious diseases.

Conductive hydrogels that are highly elastic, fatigue resistant and environmentally adaptive are promising materials in the fields of wearable electronics, bioelectronics and soft robotics. However, these materials are challenging to develop, especially for use in harsh environments including organic solvents and extreme temperatures. Here we report a simple method for the fabrication of highly compressible and fatigue-resistant conductive hydrogels with reinforced-concrete-type constituents and high-tortuosity interconnected cellular architecture through a self-assembly and two-stage in situ polymerization process. The obtained composites exhibit excellent mechanical compressibility with negligible residual strain at 50% strain for >104 cyclic loadings both in air and water. Due to the structure-favoured anisotropic response to tensile deformations coupled with elastic recovery, the hydrogel is endowed with sensing dimensions which allow the direction and velocity of movement on the sensor surface to be distinguished. In addition, by interpenetrating with an oleophilic polymer network, highly elastic and adaptive organohydrogels are developed with outstanding sensing performance in a wide variety of organic solvents and cryogenic temperatures. These materials may therefore be suitable for use in flexible and wearable devices in harsh environments.

PurposeThis paper aims to adopt the strategy-structure-performance (SSP) framework to explore how proactive social strategy could motivate firms to collaborate with suppliers on social sustainability initiatives, and how such collaborative efforts could unlock a win-win opportunity for both noneconomic (social performance) and economic (operational performance) performance. Additionally, drawing on the tenets of the social exchange theory, the different moderating effects of distributive justice and procedural justice on the social collaboration-performance relationship are also examined.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses survey data collected from 215 manufacturing companies in China. The proposed hypotheses are tested using multiple linear regression models as well as the PROCESS macro within SPSS.FindingsThe results suggest that (1) a proactive social strategy could motivate firms to collaborate with suppliers on joint social activities and (2) social collaboration with suppliers can have a significant positive effect on both social and operational performance. The moderation results suggest that distributive justice has a differential effect on the collaboration-performance link. Particularly, distributive justice strengthens the relationship between social collaboration and operational performance, while it weakens the relationship between social collaboration and social performance. Surprisingly, procedural justice did not have a significant moderating effect on the social collaboration-performance link.Originality/valueThis paper extends the SSP framework to the social sustainability context by not only stressing the importance of proactivity in managing sustainability, but also revealing collaboration as a structural aspect that could achieve superior performance benefits. This study also contributes to sustainable supply chain literature by exploring the moderating roles of justice elements.

PurposeDrawing on the signaling theory and the relational exchange theory, this study investigates how buyer–supplier trust is influenced through the congruence and incongruence between blockchain and norm of solidarity. The moderating role of technology uncertainty is further examined.Design/methodology/approachUsing a survey data of 110 Chinese firms, this study empirically tests not only the combined effect of blockchain and norm of solidarity on trust, but also how this combined effect is moderated by technology uncertainty. The proposed hypotheses are tested using the polynomial regression analysis and the response surface methodology.FindingsThe results suggest that trust increases along with an increasing congruence between blockchain and norm or solidarity, but in a diminishing rate (i.e. an inverted U-shaped relationship). Simultaneously, incongruence between blockchain and norm of solidarity can also guarantee sufficient trust (i.e. a U-shaped relationship). Moreover, technology uncertainty overturns the inverted U-shaped relationship between blockchain and norm of solidarity congruence on trust into a U-shaped relationship and nullifies the U-shaped relationship between blockchain and norm of solidarity incongruence on trust.Originality/valueThis study enriches supply chain governance literature by introducing the emerging blockchain governance and examining the blockchain governance's interplay with a conventional relational norm. The study emphasizes that the combined effects of these two are quite complex. Blockchain and norm of solidarity can offset each other’s limitations when both are at low to moderate levels. But simultaneous pursuit of both high blockchain and norm has only limited marginal benefits. Furthermore, the study also highlights the importance of technology uncertainty under which the combined effects between the two governance mechanisms vary. Collectively, the results provide nuanced insights into the design of supply chain governance portfolios in the digital era.

Personalized recommendation plays an important role on content selection during the adaptive learning process. It is always a challenge on how to recommend effective items to improve learning performance. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of applying adaptive testing technology for personalized recommendation. We proposed the adaptation of applicable adaptive testing technology as a solution based on the widely accepted teaching philosophy that providing learners with challenging content can stimulate their potential and improve their performance. Specifically, we adapted item selection algorithms to make the difficulty of recommended items above the learner’s current knowledge level on the basis of the uniform scale of learner’s ability and item difficulty in the adaptive testing area. Participants were recruited from two classes in a junior middle school, one served as the experimental group by applying the adaptive testing recommendation, and the other served as the control group by applying the random recommendation. The results showed that the experimental group students achieved significantly higher scores and demonstrated higher learning abilities than the control group students. Therefore, the adapted testing technology that is being used for personalized recommendation is effective in improving learning performance.

Microbial interactions within a natural or engineered consortium of microbes play an important role in the functions of the consortium. Better understanding these interactions is also important for engineering microbial consortia for specific applications. As such, tools that can enable investigating microbial interactions are highly valuable. One aspect of microbial interactions that impacts community formation is how the spatial organization of individual microbes impacts interactions leading to community formation. Here, we report the development of a tool that can manipulate the spatial organization of microorganisms to investigate the role of these interactions in community formation. Our developed microfluidic platform utilizes dielectrophoretic (DEP) force to perform on-demand spatial arrangement of microorganism-encapsulated agarose gel microparticles. STUDY QUESTION Is there an efficient and cost-effective detection platform for different genetic conditions about embryos? SUMMARY ANSWER A multifunctional haplotyping-based preimplantation genetic testing platform was provided for detecting different genetic conditions. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Genetic disease and chromosomal rearrangement have been known to significantly impact fertility and development. Therefore, preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), monogenic disorders (PGT-M) and structural rearrangements (PGT-SR), a part of ART, has been presented together to minimize the fetal genetic risk and increase pregnancy rate. For patients or their families who are suffering from chromosome abnormality, monogenic disease, unexplained repeated spontaneous abortion or implantation failure, after accepting genetic counseling, they may be suggested to accept detection from more than one PGT platforms about the embryos to avoid some genetic diseases. However, PGT platforms work through different workflows. The high costliness, lack of material and long-time operation of combined PGT platforms limit their application. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION All 188 embryonic samples from 43 families were tested with HaploPGT platform, and most of their genetic abnormalities had been determined by different conventional PGT methods beforehand. Among them, there were 12 families only carrying structural rearrangements (115 embryos) in which 9 families accepted implantation and 5 families had normal labor ART outcomes, 7 families only carrying monogenic diseases (26 embryos) and 3 families carrying both structural rearrangements and monogenic diseases (26 embryos). Twelve monopronucleated zygotes (1PN) samples and 9 suspected triploid samples were collected from 21 families. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTINGS, METHODS Here, we raised a comprehensive PGT method called HaploPGT, combining reduced representation genome sequencing, read-count analysis, B allele frequency and haplotyping analysis, to simultaneously detect different genetic disorders in one single test. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE With 80 million reads (80M) genomic data, the proportion of windows (1 million base pairs (Mb)) containing two or more informative single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites was 97.81%, meanwhile the genotyping error rate stabilized at a low level (2.19%). Furthermore, the informative SNPs were equally distributed across the genome, and whole-genomic haplotyping was established. Therefore, 80M was chosen to balance the cost and accuracy in HaploPGT. HaploPGT was able to identify abnormal embryos with triploid, global and partial loss of heterozygosity, and even to distinguish parental origin of copy number variation in mosaic and non-mosaic embryos. Besides, by retrospectively analyzing 188 embryonic samples from 43 families, HaploPGT revealed 100% concordance with the available results obtained from reference methods, including PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR and PGT-HLA. LIMITATIONS, REASON FOR CAUTION Despite the numerous benefits HaploPGT could bring, it still required additional family members to deduce the parental haplotype for identifying balanced translocation and monogenic mutation in tested embryos. In terms of PGT-SR, the additional family member could be a reference embryo with unbalanced translocation. For PGT-M, a proband was normally required. In both cases, genomic information from grandparents or parental siblings might help for haplotyping theoretically. Another restriction was that haploid, and diploid resulting from the duplication of a haploid, could not be told apart by HaploPGT, but it was able to recognize partial loss of heterozygosity in the embryonic genome. In addition, it should be noted that the location of rearrangement breakpoints and the situation of mutation sites were complicated, which meant that partial genetic disorders might not be completely detected. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS HaploPGT is an efficient and cost-effective detection platform with high clinical value for detecting genetic status. This platform could promote the application of PGT in ART, to increase pregnancy rate and decrease the birth of children with genetic diseases. Background: High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)-Ultraviolet (UV) and Liquid Chromatography (LC)-Mass Spectrometry (MS)/MS methods have been used to analyse abiraterone (ART); however, a single-quadrupole mass spectrometer with LC-MS systems has never been used to analyse ART. Objective: The study aimed to establish a novel, simple assay of quantitating ART in rat plasma through LC-MS. Method: The analytical procedure involved the extraction of ART and D4-ART (internal standard, IS) from rat plasma through simple protein precipitation. Chromatographic separation was achieved using an isocratic mobile phase (acetonitrile: 5 mM ammonium formate with 0.1% formic acid, 50:50 v/v) at a flow rate of 0.30 mL/min on a Waters XBridge® C18 column with a total run time of 5 min. LC-MS ion transitions monitored were 350.1 and 354.1 for ART and IS, respectively. The method was validated, and the results met acceptance criteria. Results: The lower limit of quantitation achieved was 1 ng/mL, and linearity was 1-8000 ng/mL. The intra- and inter-day precisions were 1.26%-14.20% and 5.49%-13.08%, respectively, in rat plasma. Conclusion: LC-MS offers a novel, specific, sensitive, and accurate method for quantifying ART and it was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic studies of ART in rats.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are both characterized by cognitive and social impairments. Determining disorder-specific neurobiological alterations in GAD and MDD by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may promote determination of precise diagnostic markers.This study aimed to examine disorder-specific behavioral and neural alterations at the intersection of social and cognitive processing in treatment-naïve first-episode GAD (n = 35) and MDD (n = 37) patients compared to healthy controls (n = 35) by employing a social-emotional n-back fMRI paradigm.No behavioral differences between patients and healthy controls were observed. However, GAD patients exhibited decreased bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) engagement during the 0-back condition yet increased dmPFC engagement during the 1-back condition compared to MDD and healthy participants. In contrast, MDD patients exhibited increased dmPFC-insula coupling during 0-back, yet decreased coupling during 1-back, compared to GAD and healthy participants. Dimensional symptom-load analysis confirmed that increased dmPFC-insula connectivity during 0-back was positively associated with depressive symptom load.The moderate sample size in the present study did not allow us to further explore gender differences. In addition, some patients exhibited GAD and MDD comorbidity according to the M.I.N.I. interview. Finally, the paradigm we used did not allow to further disentangle emotion-specific effects on working memory.These findings suggest that the dmPFC engaged in integrating affective and cognitive components and self-other processing exhibits GAD-specific neurofunctional dysregulations whereas functional dmPFC communication with the insula, a region involved in salience processing, may represent an MDD-specific neurofunctional deficit.

In construction industry, the research and development (R&D) and application of green building technologies (GBTs) are crucial to promote the development of green buildings. From the perspective of supply-demand subject populations, this paper discusses the dynamic evolution process of strategy between individuals within construction enterprise populations and between construction enterprise populations and consumer populations. Firstly, based on Moran process, the stochastic evolutionary game model of construction enterprises adopting independent innovation strategy was constructed to obtain the conditions for the dominance of independent innovation strategy. Next, the bimatrix game model of construction enterprise populations and consumer populations was constructed to obtain the equilibrium frequency of the joint strategy. Then, the influence laws of the change of parameters on game were discussed through numerical simulations. The results show that (1) reducing the cost of independent R&D cost, reducing the spillover effect coefficient, increasing the loss of technology introduction, and increasing R&D subsidies for independent innovation construction enterprises are all conducive to IIS becoming an evolutionary stable strategy. (2) The marginal effect of IIS increases with the decrease in the spillover effect coefficient, the increase in the loss of technology introduction of construction enterprises, and the increase R&D subsidies. (3) The smaller the mutation rate is, the greater the cross-price sensitivity coefficient is, the greater the green sensitivity coefficient is, the greater the probability of government active encouragement is, and the more dominant (production of green buildings, purchase of green buildings) is. Finally, relevant measures and suggestions are proposed.

Faced with goal to improve ecological environment, water pollution treatment in river basins has been one of research focuses in recent years. Based on the basic characteristics of the river basins including main stream and multiple or multilevel tributaries, considering competitive relationship and cost-sharing mechanism of water pollution control, a differential game model of pollution elimination including main stream government and two tributary governments was constructed, and the equilibrium strategies under two situations of noncooperation mechanism and cost-sharing mechanism were discussed. The results show that Stackelberg game model based on cost-sharing mechanism can improve the pollution elimination effect and achieve Pareto improvement of the environment and economy. Then, through numerical analysis, influence of factors such as competition coefficient on pollutant elimination effect, tripartite effort, and optimal cost-sharing ratio were discussed. The results show that, in order to effectively reduce pollutant and improve environmental benefits, the greater pressure on tributary governments to develop the economy and the smaller degree of pollution treatment efforts, the more cost-sharing mechanism needed, and the higher main stream government’s cost-sharing proportion to the tributary government. When the pollution eliminating-quantity on unit effort of one tributary government increases, the revenue of main stream and tributary governments will increase; simultaneously, when the effort degree of the tributary government increases, the other decreases. The optimal cost-sharing proportions of main stream government to two tributaries are different which is influenced by many factors, and the influence rule presents stable monotonic increase or decrease. The research conclusions can provide reference for the governments to negotiate and determine cost-sharing mechanism.

During 2018-2019, a severe human adenovirus (HAdV) infection outbreak occurred in southern China. Here, we screened 18 respiratory pathogens in 1704 children (≤ 14 years old) hospitalized with acute respiratory illness in Guangzhou, China, in 2019. In total, 151 patients had positive HAdV test results; 34.4% (52/151) of them exhibited severe illness. HAdV infection occurred throughout the year, with a peak in summer. The median patient age was 3.0 (interquartile range: 1.1-5.0) years. Patients with severe HAdV infection exhibited increases in 12 clinical indexes (P ​≤ ​0.019) and decreases in four indexes (P ​≤ ​0.007), compared with patients exhibiting non-severe infection. No significant differences were found in age or sex distribution according to HAdV infection severity (P ​ ​0.05); however, the distributions of comorbid disease and HAdV co-infection differed according to HAdV infection severity (P ​ ​0.05). The main epidemic types were HAdV-3 (47.0%, 71/151) and HAdV-7 (46.4%, 70/151). However, the severe illness rate was significantly higher in patients with HAdV-7 (51.4%) than in patients with HAdV-3 (19.7%) and other types of HAdV (20%) (P ​ ​0.001). Sequencing analysis of genomes/capsid genes of 13 HAdV-7 isolates revealed high similarity to previous Chinese isolates. A representative HAdV-7 isolate exhibited a similar proliferation curve to the curve described for the epidemic HAdV-3 strain Guangzhou01 (accession no. DQ099432) (P ​ ​0.05); the HAdV-7 isolate exhibited stronger virulence and infectivity, compared with HAdV-3 (P ​ ​0.001). Overall, comorbid disease, HAdV co-infection, and high virulence and infectivity of HAdV-7 were critical risk factors for severe HAdV infection; these data can facilitate treatment, control, and prevention of HAdV infection.

Background Schizophrenia is considered to be a disorder of dysconnectivity characterized by abnormal functional integration between distinct brain regions. Different brain connection abnormalities were found to be correlated with various clinical manifestations, but whether a common deficit in functional connectivity (FC) in relation to both clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments could present in first-episode patients who have never received any medication remains elusive. Objective To find a core deficit in the brain connectome that is related to both psychopathological and cognitive manifestations. Methods A total of 75 patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 51 healthy control participants underwent scanning of the brain and clinical ratings of behaviors. A principal component analysis was performed on the clinical ratings of symptom and cognition. Partial correlation analyses were conducted between the main psychopathological components and resting-state FC that were found abnormal in schizophrenia patients. Results Using the principal component analysis, the first principal component (PC1) explained 37% of the total variance of seven clinical features. The ratings of GAF and BACS contributed negatively to PC1, while those of PANSS, HAMD, and HAMA contributed positively. The FCs positively correlated with PC1 mainly included connections related to the insula, precuneus gyrus, and some frontal brain regions. FCs negatively correlated with PC1 mainly included connections between the left middle cingulate cortex and superior and middle occipital regions. Conclusion In conclusion, we found a linked pattern of FC associated with both psychopathological and cognitive manifestations in drug-naïve first-episode schizophrenia characterized as the dysconnection related to the frontal and visual cortex, which may represent a core deficit of brain FC in patients with schizophrenia.

Approximately 70-90% of mushroom poisoning deaths are caused by α-amanitin-induced liver injury resulting from RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) inhibition. Liver regeneration ability may contribute greatly to individual survival after α-amanitin poisoning. However, it is unclear what cellular pathways are activated to stimulate regeneration. We conducted dose-effect and time-effect studies in mice that were intraperitoneally injected with 0.33-0.66 mg/kg α-amanitin to establish a poisoning model. The liver/body weight ratio, serological indices, and pathology were evaluated to characterize the liver injury. In the time-effect study, the liver transcriptome was analyzed to explore the mRNA changes resulting from RNAP II inhibition and the underlying pathways associated with recovery. Based on the two animal studies, we established a poisoning model with three sequential liver states: early injury, regulation, and recovery. The mRNA changes reflected by the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the transcriptome could be used to illustrate the inhibition of RNAP II by α-amanitin. DEGs at four key time points were well matched with the three liver states, including 8-h downregulated genes in the early injury state, 16-h and 72-h upregulated genes in the regulation state, and 96-h upregulated/downregulated genes in the recovery state. By clustering analysis, the mTOR signaling pathway was screened out as the most promising potential pathway promoting recovery. The results of our investigations of the pathways and events downstream of the mTOR pathway indicated that the activation of mTOR probably contributes crucially to liver regeneration, which could be a promising basis for drug development.

Investigation of the temporal variability of resting-state brain networks informs our understanding of how neural connectivity aggregates and disassociates over time, further shedding light on the aberrant neural interactions that underlie symptomatology and psychosis development. In the current work, an electroencephalogram-based sliding window analysis was utilized for the first time to measure the nonlinear complexity of dynamic resting-state brain networks of schizophrenia (SZ) patients by applying fuzzy entropy. The results of this study demonstrated the attenuated temporal variability among multiple electrodes that were distributed in the frontal and right parietal lobes for SZ patients when compared with healthy controls (HCs). Meanwhile, a concomitant strengthening of the posterior and peripheral flexible connections that may be attributed to the excessive alertness or sensitivity of SZ patients to the external environment was also revealed. These temporal fluctuation distortions combined reflect an abnormality in the coordination of functional network switching in SZ, which is further the source of worse task performance (i.e., P300 amplitude) and the negative relationship between individual complexity metrics and P300 amplitude. Notably, when using the network metrics as features, multiple linear regressions of P300 amplitudes were also exactly achieved for both the SZ and HC groups. These findings shed light on the pathophysiological mechanisms of SZ from a temporal variability perspective and provide potential biomarkers for quantifying SZ's progressive neurophysiological deterioration.

Hollow microspheres are widely used in syntactic foam as a lightweight filling material. Hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and hollow phenolic microspheres (HPM) were added to the phenolic resin to prepare phenolic syntactic foams. Then the mechanical properties, thermal insulation properties, and thermal property stability of them were studied. The mechanical test result shows that the flexural strength of phenolic syntactic foam gradually decreases with the increasing volume fraction of microspheres at room temperature. When the volume fraction of HGM is 20%, the specific strength of phenolic syntactic foam can rise to 0.0334 Nm/kg. HGM reduces the density of the phenolic syntactic foam and remains at high strength. In addition, the thermal conductivity of phenolic syntactic foam decreases with the increasing volume fraction of the hollow microspheres, indicating that the microspheres can effectively improve the thermal insulation performance of the phenolic syntactic foam. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity of phenolic syntactic foam also increases as the heat treatment temperature rises. In addition, the thermal insulation performance of phenolic syntactic foam containing HGM is better than that containing HPM. Thermal analysis experiments show that the thermal weight loss rate becomes slower as the content of HGM increases. Therefore, HGM improves the thermal stability of the containing phenolic syntactic foam. However, the HPM reduces the thermal decomposition temperature and the thermal stability of the phenolic syntactic foam. This work provides the technical basis for applying phenolic syntactic foam as a heat insulation material.

Background The interaction between tumor cells and immune or non-immune stromal cells creates a unique tumor microenvironment, which plays an important role in the growth, invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer (GC). Methods The candidate genes were selected to construct risk-score by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Nomograms were constructed by combining clinical pathological factors, and the model performance was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve, decision curve analysis, net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement. The functional enrichment between high-risk group (HRisk) and low-risk group (LRisk) was explored through GO, KEGG, GSVA and ssGSEA. CIBERSORT, quanTIseq and xCell were used to explore the immune cell infiltration between HRisk and LRisk. The relevant EMT scores, macrophage infiltration scores and various metabolic scores were calculated through the “IOBR” package and analyzed visually. Results Through univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis, we obtained the risk-score of fittings six lipid metabolism related genes (LMAGs). Through survival analysis, we found that risk-score has significant prognostic significance and can accurately reflect the metabolic level of patients. The AUCs of the nomogram model incorporating risk-score 1, 3 and 5 years were 0.725, 0.729 and 0.749 respectively. In addition, it was found that the inclusion of risk-score could significantly improve the prediction performance of the model. It was found that the arachidonic acid metabolism and prostaglandin synthesis were up-regulated in HRisk, and more tumor metastasis related markers and immune related pathways were also enriched. Further study found that HRisk had higher immune score and M2 macrophage infiltration. More importantly, the immune checkpoints of tumor associated macrophages involved in tumor antigen recognition disorders increased significantly. We also found that ST6GALNAC3 can promote arachidonic acid metabolism and up-regulate prostaglandin synthesis, increase M2 macrophage infiltration, induce epithelial mesenchymal transformation, and affect the prognosis of patients. Conclusions Our research found a novel and powerful LMAGs signature. Six-LMAGs features can effectively evaluate the prognosis of GC patients and reflect the metabolic and immune status. ST6GALNAC3 may be a potential prognostic marker to improve the survival rate and prognostic accuracy of GC patients, and may even be a potential biomarker of GC patients, indicating the response to immunotherapy.

An increasing body of evidence has suggested that reprogrammed metabolism plays a critical role in the progression of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) by affecting the tumor and stromal cellular components in the tumor microenvironment (TME). By analyzing the KRAS pathway and metabolic pathways, we found that calcium and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1) corresponded with upregulation of glucose metabolism pathways and was associated with poor prognosis in patients with PDAC from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Elevated CIB1 expression combined with upregulated glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation (Oxphos), hypoxia pathway activation, and cell cycle promoted PDAC tumor growth and increased tumor cellular com-ponents. Furthermore, we confirmed the mRNA overexpression of CIB1 and co-expression of CIB1 and KRAS mutation in cell lines from the Expression Atlas. Subsequently, immunohistochemistry staining from the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) showed that high expression of CIB1 in tumor cells was associated with an increased tumor compartment and reduced stromal cellular abundance. Furthermore, using multiplexed immunohistochemistry (mIHC), we verified that low stromal abundance was correlated with low infiltration of CD8+ PD-1− T cells which led to suppressed anti-tumor immunity. Overall, our findings identify CIB1 as a metabolic pathway-mediated factor for the restriction of immune cell infiltration in the stromal compartment of PDAC and highlight the potential value of CIB1 as a prognostic biomarker involved in metabolic reprogramming and immune modulation.

STUDY QUESTION What is the effect of defects in the manchette protein IQ motif-containing N (IQCN) on sperm flagellar assembly? SUMMARY ANSWER Deficiency in IQCN causes sperm flagellar assembly defects and male infertility. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The manchette is a transient structure that is involved in the shaping of the human spermatid nucleus and protein transport within flagella. Our group recently reported that the manchette protein IQCN is essential for fertilization. Variants in IQCN lead to total fertilization failure and defective acrosome structure phenotypes. However, the function of IQCN in sperm flagellar assembly is still unknown. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Fifty men with infertility were recruited from a university-affiliated center from January 2014 to October 2022. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood samples of all 50 individuals for whole-exome sequencing. The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa was assessed by transmission electron microscopy. Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used to test the parameters of curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight-line velocity (VSL), and average path velocity (VAP). An Iqcn knockout (Iqcn−/−) mouse model was generated by CRISPR–Cas9 technology to evaluate sperm motility and the ultrastructure of the flagellum. Hyperactivation and sperm fertilizing ability were assessed in a mouse model. Immunoprecipitation followed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to detect IQCN-binding proteins. Immunofluorescence was used to validate the localization of IQCN-binding proteins. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Biallelic variants in IQCN (c.3913A>T and c.3040A>G; c.2453_2454del) were identified in our cohort of infertile men. The sperm from the affected individuals showed an irregular ‘9 + 2’ structure of the flagellum, which resulted in abnormal CASA parameters. Similar phenotypes were observed in Iqcn−/− male mice. VSL, VCL, and VAP in the sperm of Iqcn−/− male mice were significantly lower than those in Iqcn+/+ male mice. Partial peripheral doublet microtubules (DMTs) and outer dense fibers (ODFs) were absent, or a chaotic arrangement of DMTs was observed in the principal piece and end piece of the sperm flagellum. Hyperactivation and IVF ability were impaired in Iqcn−/− male mice. In addition, we investigated the causes of motility defects and identified IQCN-binding proteins including CDC42 and the intraflagellar transport protein families that regulate flagellar assembly during spermiogenesis. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION More cases are needed to demonstrate the relation between IQCN variants and phenotypes. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Our findings expand the genetic and phenotypic spectrum of IQCN variants in causing male infertility, providing a genetic marker for sperm motility deficiency and male infertility. Objective China is facing a serious aging problem, because there will be 190.64 million senior people in China, or 13.50 percent of the country's total population by the end of 2020. People who experience the one-child policy have entered the stage of old age Families with fewer children have more strain from their parents' advanced age. Therefore, this research aims to find one child's needs for caring for aging parents. Methods In this study, a total of 279 posts and more than 13,000 related comments were gathered using a Python crawler to harvest data from the Only Child parents' elderly care Exchange Organization group on Douban. The BTM algorithm, a topic model approach for short texts, and the sentiment analysis dictionary from the Harbin Institute of Technology were employed in this study to analyze sentiment. Results in Seven themes were detected by the BTM model. The sentiment analysis results demonstrated that users' positive and negative feelings were mixed. Conclusion Children in Chinese families with one child face a more significant burden of aging out, especially in terms of money, work, and marriage. The time-consuming and laborious care of the elderly puts them under more pressure to work. Therefore to relieve the pressure of old age for only children we have to start from three aspects.

Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma (BLCA) remains the most common urinary system tumor, and its prognosis is poor. Cuproptosis is a recently discovered novel cell death involved in the development of tumor cells. However, the use of cuproptosis to predict the prognosis and immunity of Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma remains largely unclear, and this study was designed to verify cuproptosis-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) to estimate the prognosis and immunity of Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma. In our study, we first defined the expression of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) in BLCA, and 10 CRGs were up- or downregulated. We then constructed a co-expression network of cuproptosis-related mRNA and long non-coding RNAs using RNA sequence data from The Cancer Genome Atlas Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma (TCGA-BLCA), clinical features and mutation data from BLCA patients to obtain long non-coding RNAs by Pearson analysis. Afterward, univariate and multivariate COX analysis identified 21 long non-coding RNAs as independent prognostic factors and used these long non-coding RNAs to construct a prognostic model. Then, survival analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), immunoassay, and comparison of tumor mutation frequencies were performed to verify the accuracy of the constructed model, and GO and KEGG functional enrichment analysis was used to verify further whether cuproptosis-related long non-coding RNAs were associated with biological pathways. The results showed that the model constructed with cuproptosis-related long non-coding RNAs could effectively evaluate the prognosis of BLCA, and these long non-coding RNAs were involved in numerous biological pathways. Finally, we performed immune infiltration, immune checkpoint and drug sensitivity analyses on four genes (TTN, ARID1A, KDM6A, RB1) that were highly mutated in the high-risk group to evaluate the immune association of risk genes with BLCA. In conclusion, the cuproptosis-related lncRNA markers constructed in this study have evaluation value for prognosis and immunity in BLCA, which can provide a certain reference for the treatment and immunity of BLCA.

Background This study explored the specialty preferences of China-educated international medical students (IMSs), who are mainly from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and constitute a potential medical workforce both for their home countries and foreign countries, and the influence of migration intentions on their specialty preferences. Methods A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was conducted at 5 universities in China. The questionnaire link was distributed electronically among the IMSs at the 5 universities via emails. The questionnaire enquired IMSs’ demographic information, migration intentions and their specialty preferences. The Chi-square test was applied to determine the influence of the respondent’s gender, intention to practise in the home country and intention to practise in a high-income country on their specialty choices. The Chi-square test was also applied to determine the influence of the respondent’s gender, year of study and country of origin on their preferences for generalist-orientated or non-generalist orientated specialties. Results Altogether, 452 IMSs returned their responses, yielding a response rate of 64.1%. Approximately half of the IMSs planned to not return to their home country. The most selected specialty was general surgery and the least selected specialty was physical medicine and rehabilitation. No significant differences were evident in most specialty preferences between those who intended to return home and those who intended to stay abroad. Among the IMSs having intentions of returning to their home country, male students tended to choose a generalist-orientated specialty, while female students tended to choose a non-generalist-orientated specialty. Conclusion China-educated IMSs could play important roles in the primary care services as well as other shortage specialties both for their home countries or foreign countries. Therefore, it is recommended that governments in these countries plan migration and recruitment policies that cater for these studying-abroad medical students from LMICs, especially in this challenging time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We report a calibration method to simultaneously characterize all the frequency-dependent impairments of coherent optical transceivers. With calibration operation, dual-polarization 96GBaud Nyquist-16QAM signal transmission is achieved by using a silicon photonics-based 64GBaud-class coherent optical transceiver.
