This study examines the spatiotemporal characteristics of the summer monsoon rainy season over East Asia using six regional climate models (RCMs) participating in the Coordinated Regional Domain Experiment (CORDEX) East Asia Phase II project. The framework combining multiple global climate models (GCMs) with multiple RCMs produces a larger spread in summer monsoon characteristics than driving GCMs only, enabling a better quantification of uncertainty factors. On average, the RCM simulations reproduce the observed summer monsoon duration and area better than the corresponding boundary GCMs, implying the added values of downscaling. Both the area and duration of the East Asian summer monsoon are projected to increase by the late 21st century, more strongly in high emission scenarios than in low emission scenarios, particularly in China. Different responses between scenarios, which indicate warming mitigation benefits, only become significant in the late 21st century due to large intersimulation uncertainties. Analysis of variance results show that uncertainty in future monsoon area and duration is larger between boundary GCMs than between RCMs over East Asia and its coastal subregions. A strong intersimulation relationship between RCMs and GCMs supports that boundary GCMs substantially diversify downscaled RCM projections through different climate sensitivities. Furthermore, the distinct subregional responses in future monsoon area and duration emphasize the importance of fine-resolution projections with appropriate uncertainty measures for better preparing region-specific adaptation plans.

This study is to evaluate future agricultural water supply capacity in Geum river basin (9,865 km2) using SWAT and MODSIM-DSS. The MODSIM-DSS was established by dividing the basin into 14 subbasins, and the irrigation facilities of agricultural reservoirs, pumping stations, diversions, culverts and groundwater wells were grouped within each subbasin, and networked between subbasins including municipal and industrial water supplies. The SWAT was calibrated and validated using 11 years (2005-2015) daily streamflow data of two dams (DCD and YDD) and 4 years (August 2012 to December 2015) data of three weirs (SJW, GJW, and BJW) considering water withdrawals and return flows from agricultural, municipal, and industrial water uses. The Nash−Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of two dam and three weirs inflows were 0.55∼0.70 and 0.57∼0.77 respectively. Through MODSIM-DSS run for 34 years from 1982 to 2015, the agricultural water shortage had occurred during the drought years of 1982, 1988, 1994, 2001 and 2015. The agricultural water shortage could be calculated as 197.8 × 106 m3, 181.9 × 106 m3, 211.5 × 106 m3, 189.2 × 106 m3 and 182.0 × 106 m3 respectively. The big shortages of agricultural water were shown in water resources unit map number of 3004 (Yeongdongcheon) and 3012 (Geumgang Gongju) areas exceeding 25.1 × 106 m3 and 47.4 × 106 m3. From the estimation of future agricultural water requirement using RCP 8.5 INM-CM4 scenario, the 3004 and 3012 areas showed significant water shortages of 26.1 × 106 m3 (104.1%) and 50.9 × 106 m3 (107.4%) in 2080s (2070∼2099) compared to the present shortages. The water shortages decreased to 23.6 × 106 m3 (94.0%) and 43.3 × 106 m3 (91.4%) below of the present shortages by developing irrigation facilities.

In this study, the regional climate of East Asia was dynamically downscaled using Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model version 3-Regional Atmosphere (HadGEM3-RA) forced by the historical simulation data (1979–2005) of HadGEM2-AO produced by the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS). To understand the impact of corrected SST on regional climate simulation, we integrated the experiments using uncorrected (UC_SST) and Bias- and Variance-corrected (BCVC_SST) HadGEM2-AO SST and used the simulated data driven by the ERA-Interim reanalysis data and HadGEM2-AO data. Examination of the spatial distribution, statistics, and interannual variation on wintertime precipitation over East Asia indicates that BCVC_SST reduced the overestimation of the climatological mean precipitation. In order to understand the impact of corrected SST on variability, we investigated the relationship between winter snowfall in South Korea and SST over East Asia. The negative correlation coefficient between the winter precipitation and the SST of the seas surrounding Korea appears in the result of observation data. The experiment result using BCVC_SST simulated the negative correlation between the winter snowfall and the SST around Korea more realistically than that of the simulations using UC_SST and HadGEM2-AO data. These results indicate that corrected SST helps to improve the variability of snowfall and SST simulated by HadGEM3-RA. However, time lag about the years when had peak point of SST appeared in the results compared between BCVC_SST experiment and observation data. The peak years shown in the result of the BCVC_SST experiment were similar to that of HadGEM2-AO data. At these results, even though the corrected SST improves climatological mean and variability of simulated data, it has the limitation not to overcome the error such as time lag showed in GCM SST. Additionally, the analysis of the snowfall in South Korea describes that SST is passively used for the source of snowfall and atmospheric variables mainly lead the intensity and the amount of snowfall.

Background: Ankle instability usually occurs after stroke, and contributes to unsafe walking and associated risk of falling in the affected patients. Objective: To investigate the effects of kinesiology taping (KT) on gait and balance ability (center of pressure, CoP) in patients with ankle instability after stroke. Design: One group, pre-post design. Methods: A total of 11 patients with ankle instability after stroke were enrolled. In all subjects, the gait and balance ability were assessed under 2 conditions: KT and barefoot. Gait and balance ability was assessed using GAITRite system and FDM-S platform. An extreme heatwave, in terms of intensity and duration, is projected to occur at the end of the 21st century (2071–2100) over the whole of East Asia. The projection is calculated using daily maximum temperature data of 25 km horizontal resolution produced by 12 general circulation model-regional climate model chains participating in the CORDEX-East Asia Phase 2 project. An ‘extreme’ heatwave is defined as one in which the heatwave magnitude (HWM), which is the accumulated daily intensity of a heatwave during the heatwave period, is higher than the 95th percentile of the HWM for the reference period (1981–2005). In historical simulations, heatwaves have occurred mainly from April to June in India, in April and May in Indochina, from June to August in China and Mongolia, and in July and August in the Korean Peninsula and Japan; most heatwaves last three to four days. In India and Indochina, long-lasting and intense heatwaves occur more often than in other regions. In future, heatwave intensity will increase, the average duration of heatwaves will be approximately two to three weeks, and the heatwave season will be lengthened. Therefore, extreme heatwaves will occur more frequently and strongly. Under two representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) and two shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5), the proportion of extreme heatwaves to all heatwave events will increase from 5.0% (historical) to 8.0%, 20.8%, 19.3%, and 36.3%, and the HWM of the extreme heatwave will be 1.4, 3.5, 3.0, and 9.0 times stronger, respectively. The main reason for the increase in the HWM of extreme heatwaves is the increased duration rather than the daily intensity of the heatwaves. In East Asia, the temporal and regional disparities of heatwave damage will be much more prominent as extreme heatwaves become stronger and more frequent in these regions and during the periods that are more affected by heatwaves in the present day.

Ectopic fat and abdominal adiposity phenotypes have never been studied holistically in individuals after acute pancreatitis (AP). The aim of the study was to investigate phenotypical differences in ectopic fat and abdominal fat between individuals after AP (with and without diabetes) and to determine the role of pancreatitis-related factors. Eighty-four individuals were studied cross-sectionally after a median of 21.5 mo since last episode of AP and were categorized into “diabetes” and “no diabetes” groups. Twenty-eight healthy volunteers were also recruited. With the use of magnetic resonance imaging, intrapancreatic fat percentage, liver fat percentage, visceral fat volume (VFV), subcutaneous fat volume, and visceral-to-subcutaneous (V/S) fat volume ratio were quantified. Analysis of variance was used to investigate the differences in these phenotypes between the groups. All analyses were adjusted for age and sex. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association between pancreatitis-related factors and the studied phenotypes. Intrapancreatic fat percentage was significantly higher in the diabetes group (10.2 ± 1.2%) compared with the no diabetes (9.2 ± 1.7%) and healthy volunteers (7.9 ± 1.9%) groups ( P < 0.001). VFV was significantly higher in the diabetes (2,715.3 ±1,077.6 cm3) compared with no diabetes (1,983.2 ± 1,092.4 cm3) and healthy volunteer (1,126.2 ± 740.4 cm3) groups ( P < 0.001). V/S fat volume ratio was significantly higher in the diabetes (0.97 ± 0.27) compared with no diabetes (0.68 ± 0.42) and healthy volunteer (0.52 ± 0.34) groups ( P = 0.001). Biliary AP was associated with significantly higher intrapancreatic fat percentage (β = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.01, 1.33; P = 0.047). C-reactive protein levels during hospitalization for AP were associated with significantly higher VFV (β = 3.32; 95% CI, 1.68, 4.96; P < 0.001). In conclusion, individuals with diabetes after AP have higher intrapancreatic fat percentage, VFV, and V/S fat volume ratio. Levels of C-reactive protein during AP are significantly associated with VFV, whereas biliary AP is significantly associated with intrapancreatic fat percentage. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Individuals with diabetes after acute pancreatitis have significantly higher intrapancreatic fat percentage and visceral fat volume compared with individuals without diabetes after acute pancreatitis and healthy controls. C-reactive protein levels during hospitalization for acute pancreatitis and biliary etiology of acute pancreatitis are associated with significantly larger visceral fat and pancreatic fat depots, respectively.

In this paper we design and implement a partial denoising boundary matching system using indexing techniques. Converting boundary images to time-series makes it feasible to perform fast search using indexes even on a very large image database. Thus, using this converting method we develop a client-server system based on the previous partial denoising research in the GUI environment. The client first converts a query image given by a user to a time-series and sends denoising parameters and the tolerance with this time-series to the server. The server identifies similar images from the index by evaluating a range query, which is constructed using inputs given from the client, and sends the resulting images to the client. Experimental results show that our system provides much intuitive and accurate matching result.

The objective of this study is to present a rare case of an invaginated inferior vena cava (IVC) aneurysm in the lumbar intradiscal space. A 73-year-old woman with lower back pain and bilateral lower extremity swelling presented to the clinic. She had undergone spinal surgery performed thrice at the same site (L4–L5) in another hospital and a separate posterolateral fusion surgery procedure 3 years previously. On plain radiography, pseudarthrosis was observed at L4–L5 segment. Contrast computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a dilatation of the IVC in the intradiscal space of L4–L5. On the anterior side, anterior discectomy was performed. Following insertion of the allograft bone chip and cage, the invaginated IVC aneurysm was repositioned. Implant removal and screw fixation were performed posteriorly. Post-surgery, the patient’s lower back pain improved, and the start of anticoagulation treatment after vascular evaluation was planned. Although there have been numerous case reports of patients with intradiscal cysts or gas requiring surgical treatment, there have not yet been any reports of those with invaginated IVC in an intradiscal space. It is important to provide the appropriate treatment based on a thorough prior understanding of the patient’s anatomy.

In this study, we present the Parameter-elevation Relationships on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM)-based Dynamic downscaling Error correction (PRIDE) model, which is suitable for complex topographies, such as the Korean peninsula. The PRIDE model is constructed by combining the PRISM module, the Regional Climate Model (RCM) anomaly, and quantile mapping (QM) to produce high-resolution (1 km) grid data at a daily time scale. The results show that the systematic bias of the RCM was significantly reduced by simply substituting the climatological observational seasonal cycle at a daily timescale for each grid point obtained from the PRISM. QM was then applied to correct additional systematic bias by constructing the transfer functions under the cumulative density function framework between the model and observation using six types of transfer functions. K-fold cross-validation of the PRIDE model shows that the number of modeled precipitation days is approximately 90~121% of the number of observed precipitation days for the five daily precipitation classes, indicating that the PRIDE model reasonably estimates the observational frequency of daily precipitation under a quantile framework. The relative Mean Absolute Error (MAE) is also discussed in the framework of the intensity of daily precipitation.

The foundational international business (IB) scholarship grappled with whether multinational enterprises (MNEs) are largely efficiency-enhancing or market-power inducing institutions. Contemporary scholarship, however, often associates foreign direct investment (FDI) with efficiency-enhancing properties and thus neglects the market-power interpretation of the MNE. Such an imbalance is problematic given that the theoretical and empirical justifications behind the field's embrace of the efficiency interpretation are not fully evident. Instead, both efficiency and market-power effects are seemingly present in cross-border investment activity. Based on a comprehensive sample of up to 4,361 cross-border investments materializing between 1986 and 2010, we present theoretically-grounded hypotheses with regard to when market-power effects will tend to dominate efficiency effects. We find that cross-border investments undertaken by emerging-market MNEs in both developed and emerging markets tend to involve substantial efficiency effects and minimal market-power effects when compared with the cross-border investments undertaken by developed-country MNEs in both developed and emerging markets.

This paper presents the direction for the big-data service technology development using the 20 years' accumulated data from the construction CALS system. For the analysis of big data, this paper presents the method of gathering, processing, and utilizing not only the data stored in the construction CALS system, such as those on vehicle inspection, vehicle overload, slopes, road occupation, and land compensation, but also external data, such as those on traffic volume, cargo vehicle DTG, industrial complexes, road shape, buildings, land, land price, weather, and space. Based on the results of the data analysis, this paper presents the direction for the development of four service technologies: the optimal location and time prediction service technology for vehicle overload crackdown, the prediction service technology for slope collapse risks, the prediction service technology for road occupation (linkage) approval sections, and the compensation cost prediction service technology. In addition, in 2020, such developed services will be test-applied to the staffers of Regional Construction and Management Administrations (RCMAs) and Regional Construction and Management Offices (RCMOs) under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT), and to the general public, to prove the effects of big-data services. Afterwards, the services will be gradually applied to the road management work of MOLIT.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically assess the theoretical underpinnings and extant progress of the research on regional multi-national enterprises (MNEs) and offer a blueprint for future research by re-conceptualizing how (regional) boundaries relate to the international diversification of MNEs. Design/methodology/approach – The paper integrates key insights from the theory of the regional MNE and economic geography to re-orient the treatment of regional borders within international business (IB) literature. Findings – The paper suggests that the (L) component within the ownership location and internalization (OLI) paradigm should be disaggregated into continuous “distance effects” and discrete “border effects”. Within this rubric, regional borders represent discrete border effects that generate discontinuities that are permeable, fluid and firm specific. Such reconceptualization opens up avenues for future research and more tightly integrates the research on regional MNEs with other research streams. Research limitations/implications – IB scholars need to make concerted effort to think of regions as one among several parameters in studying the strategy and structure of MNEs. A stronger focus on internal processes and mechanisms elucidating the main drivers of MNEs strategies is needed. Originality/value – The paper offers innovative ways in which future research can advance the study of how regions matter in the internationalization strategy of MNEs.

Recently, construction industry has won an increasing number of orders for overseas construction projects, thereby achieving an external growth, but its competiveness is concentrated on the construction execution field. In particular, the plant field occupies most of the entire orders, which are concentrated regionally in the Middle East and Asia. In addition, 1ow-cost orders are frequently caused by excessive competition. But its high value-added construction engineering(Below, CE) field's overseas market share and technological capacity are very low. Also, technological competiveness, in terms of order amount and other factors, is deepening in polarization between large CE companies and small and medium-sized CE firms. It is noted that the existing CE information systems mostly simply accumulate data such as design and specification standards and provide the information thereon to users, and thus have yet to provide the information essential for the CE and support such efforts. This study sought to prepare a system designed for sharing outstanding design documents information necessary for the CE industry, by category of construction so as to support the technological enhancement of the CE field. Toward that end, this study presented measures for constructing the system and services designed to exchange and share the outstanding design documents information and know-how by construction category necessary between ordering agencies and CE companies.

Firms operate in a semi-globalized world wherein opportunities and constraints arise at both the country and regional levels; however, extant theories of firm internationalization focus mostly on country-level determinants. We aim to overcome this deficiency by developing a theoretical model that explicates the mechanisms driving firm internationalization in a semi-globalized world. Integrating the organizational learning literature with research on semi-globalization, we argue that firms internationalize through the interplay among three mechanisms: (1) intraregional exploitation; (2) intraregional reconfiguration; and (3) inter-regional exploration. We define and integrate these three mechanisms to derive two ideal typical internationalization trajectories that firms follow in a semi-globalized world: home regionalization and multiregionalization. We then elaborate on how macro-level contingencies moderate these two ideal types and conclude with implications for future research.

International Business (IB) research on foreign-location choice has experienced a revival in recent years, yet a comprehensive review has been sorely lacking. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the findings of recently published articles on the topic of foreign-location choice and offer fruitful directions for future research. This review consists of three sections: first, the authors provide a historical overview of this research stream by tracing its origins and analyzing the general trend that has shaped research on foreign-location choice. Next, the authors conduct a review of 137 recent articles published in leading IB and business/management journals. These articles are categorized according to common topics, and the main findings of each category are synthesized in order to bring some cohesion to this fragmented field. Lastly, the authors identify issues that remain under-researched or require re-thinking some taken-for-granted assumptions. Through this effort, they are able to connect the past, present and future of research on foreign-location choice and to shed some new light on the IB literature.

The aim of the study is to investigate the awareness and practice of Standard Precautions towards Hospital Infection Control in Emergency medical technology students. Data were collected from 289 questionnaires from March 20, 2012 to April 25, 2012. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 for window(SPSS Inc, USA) with the level of significance as 0.05. According to the results, significant differences were shown in gender, infection control education and infection control educational institutions. The factors influencing the practice of standard precautions were found to be the times of the contact to blood, body fluid, mucus, or the skin with lesions and the cognition of standard precautions. Cognition level of the EMT students was high but the practice level was low. Based on the results of this study, it is proposed to develop an effective educational program to improve the cognition and practice, and to improve the cognition and practice of the standard precaution through the systematic and repetitive education and training.

The axis of rotation in biomechanics is a major tool to investigate joint function; therefore, many methods to estimate the axis of rotation have been developed. However, there exist several problems to describe, estimate, and test the axis statistically. The axis is directional data(axial data) and it should not be analyzed with traditional statistics. A proper comparative method should be considered to compare axis estimating methods for the same given data ANOVA (analysis of variance) is a frequently used statistical method to compare treatment means in experimental designs. In case of the axial data response assumed to come from Watson distribution, there are a few ANOVA method options. This study constructed ANOVA models for within-subjects designs of axial data. Two models (one within-subjects factor and two within-subjects factors crossed design) were considered. The empirical data used in this study were instantaneous axes of rotation of flexion/extension at the knee joint and the flexion/extension and pronation/supination at the elbow joint. The results of this study can be further applied to the various analysis of experimental designs.

In spite of advantage by using BIM as quantity take-off, schedule control and clash check, absence of guidelines is a barrier to applying BIM to road domain. In this research, domestic and overseas cases of BIM guideline are analyzed in order to develop the road BIM deliverable submission system. The analysis is classified 5 topics which are BIM submit product list, submit files format, availability of existing 2D based products, BIM authoring tools and submit process. As a result, It needs a lot of effort to standardize BIM delivery system for road domain because BIM submit product list and BIM authoring tools are changable depending on BIM use cases. However, submit files format and submit process are common part to suggest guidelines of road BIM delivery system. It requires to combine BIM and 2D products for road BIM delivery system because delivery products are not exactly alternative 2D based delivery products for the present. The authors expect this research to use as basic data for development of the BIM deliverable submission system in road domain.
